Exercise for pain-free independent lifestyle. Fitness means different things for different age groups. But as one grows old it means an ac ve, independent, pain free living. Exercise becomes more important than ever as one becomes old. Exercise results in be er energy levels, protects heart, increases blood circula on, prevents bone loss and helps in managing pain and weight. Overall it improves one’s quality of life and helps in maintaining an independent lifestyle and achieve a greater sense of wellbeing. But even though everyone agrees to the benefit of an ac ve lifestyle not many are willing to make a change, par cularly the elderly. Exercise should be a combina on of cardio, balance and coordina on, flexibility and strength. Here let us see some common inhibi ons that stops the elderly to start an ac ve exercise rou ne. 1.I Am 70 years old and walk for half an hour every day. Isn’t that good enough? No doubt walking is an excellent cardio exercise. It improves your heart health, promotes blood circula on, regulates blood pressure and sugar levels. It also improves lung capacity and helps in ge ng over shortness of breath. Walking promotes independence by improving endurance for doing everyday ac vi es without feeling red very soon. But walking is more beneficial if it is combined with other exercises to improve flexibility, strengthening of muscles and balance. 2.I already have joint pain and s ffness. I cannot exercise. This is a very wrong no on. Many of the problems associated to old age like, weakness, s ffness, losing balance and aches and pains are due to inac vity and not due to aging. Simple stretch exercises or yoga can make your joints move freely through a full range of mo on. Increasing your range of movement also helps in reducing pain caused due to wear and tear. 3.I have not exercised before and am too old to start anything now. It is never too late to start an ac ve life. star ng an ac ve lifestyle is the healthiest decision that we can take at any age. But it is important to stay safe. Exercise can start with just walking. Star ng to walk with a friend or spouse can keep you mo vated and relaxed Doing a li le more than what we are doing can be the first step. Then slowly move on to flexibility and a bit of strength training. Strength training improves your muscle and bone strength and prevents bone loss. 4.Exercise may cause a fall. Coordina on training by a trained professional can improve your posture and walking stability. It builds confidence improves balance and reduces risk or fear of falling. 5.I am already ailing. I should not exercise. If you have an underlying health condi on like heart problem, diabetes, high blood pressure, arthri s consult with your doctor first and with the help of your physical therapist schedule a workout plan that is suitable. -Dr. R.Nalla Thambi, Founder & Chief physiotherapist, Physiofit

How to keep your Car’s Paint New Bought a new car or have an old one and want him/her to appear as new? The biggest issue with the appearance of a car is the Paint. How do we protect or regain the shine and smoothness of the paint? This question has been asked from a long time and has had various answers with not much of an effect. The wait is over; here are a few simple steps about how to keep your car looking new and this can also be performed at your drive-way or garage. 1.Inspection of your Vehicle The first and foremost step is to inspect your vehicle’s paint and outer condition thoroughly. Have a keen visual check about how dirty the car is, whether there are thick layers of mud or the car is covered with just fine dust. Older cars may need a deep cleaning process which insists the use of clay bars, wax and polishes. New cars usually are covered with a clear coat which will make the work easier. 2.Choosing the Right Products Before you buy or use any product for your car, read the description and check if the product is an all-purpose product or has specific application for specific parts. Otherwise there are chances to damage the paint or the clear coat of your Car. This will also help you to use the right amount of the product.
Let it dry for some time. Once the layer is dried, wipe the surface with a clean microfiber cloth and have a look at that Mirror-like Shine. 7.Gloss Protection To protect the gloss of your shining car, grab some carnauba or polymer wax which will work as a sealant for the gloss. This will not only add some extra shine but will also protect the paint from fading and avoid external substances like bird droppings or dirt from sticking to the paint. 8.Maintaining the Gloss Remember to carry a clean microfiber cloth along with some soapy water in to spray bottle in the trunk which will be handy to quickly remove any stains dirt from the surface. Most importantly, remember to use a circular motion and not to apply high pressure to clean the surface during such times.
3.The “No Touch” Wash Before you start to wash your car with Bucket and the Sponge, grab a hose and start spraying water on your car. This will remove all the dust, dirt and mud from the paint and will give a nice, cleaner surface. Start the process from the top of the car and follow it downwards so as the dirt and the other contaminants are carried away from top to the bottom and there is no residue left on the paint. Once the car is cleaned with the water, add some soapy water to the high pressure hose canister and spray it over the surface of the car. Before you do that make sure the liquid soap is meant and designed for car wash only. Detergents and dish washers will damage the paint and make it fade away. Washing with soapy water will help to remove the stubborn mud layers stuck on the surface of the paint. Rinse the car again with water to take away all the soap following the same top to bottom procedure. 4.The “Touch” Wash This is where you clean your car by touching the surface, maintaining the top to bottom procedure. But before you start with the wash you need to take certain precautions like do not wear clothes with sharp objects, or any body ornaments or gloves which will leave a scratch on the paint of your car. Here you must have two buckets, one with soapy water and the other one with water to rinse the dirty sponge into. Start with cleaning the car using the soapy water in circular motion without applying very high pressure, keep it gentle. This will remove all the left over, hard stuck mud and dirt particles from the paint. Make sure you use a separate bucket for your wheels as they are the dirtiest. Rinse the car with water once it is done. 5.Drying the Car Do not let the car dry under the heat of the sun as it may leave water marks on the paint surface. Use a microfiber cloth to clean dry your car and make sure the strokes are not in circular motion but to and fro. 6.Adding the Gloss Once the car is dried, use a polishing machine or hand and a fine grain wax polish to give the paint a new shiny look. Apply the polish wax on the surface of the paint and start rubbing in circular motion until there is a paste-like thin layer.
