The Birthday Story It was the year I celebrated my tenth birthday in flushing, New York City. At the age, I was like a little elf, a pixie. I liked to think that I was something of an angel in the lacy, embroidered white dress enmeshed with crystals and lovely white buttons. I was sure that the only thing missing were the angel's wings! My parents and siblings stood around the dining table at my birthday party. I cut a grand black forest birthday cake with ten 10 candles on it, lit bright, and partially buried in the thick creamy cake. As my parents and brothers and sisters rendered the "Happy Birthday!" song, I felt really happy! After the signature song and the clapping was over, I blew out the candles and made a wish- a desire that my family always be kept safe and sound. I handed out pieces of the rich chocolate cake, along with potato chips and a crunchy jaggery and nut sweet, all washed down with claret-red Roohafza, that sweet, cool drink. Next, came the unwrapping of the gifts. My siblings gifted me a whole set of indoor games, ranging from Scrabble to Monopoly! But I was agog with excitement to see my parents' gift for me. It was a box wrapped in silver paper. I eagerly unwrapped it. I opened the square box and there on a tiny dark blue velvet piece of padded cloth nestled a lovely diamond pendant that glittered, like a mini sun! It had a delicate gold chain attached to it. My mother undid the clasp and placed it around my neck by adjusting the length. Then she uttered these words that became my guiding light. "Heera, your name means 'Diamond'. Throughout your life, you must prove to be a true 'Heera, with your inner strength and outer sparkle. "Also, always remember that your happiness multiplies when you share it with others. You are extra joyful today because you distributed happiness among us and wished for the welfare of all."

Stay Happy In Rainy Season

onsoon has arrived, And rains are a great delight especially after the scorching heat of summer. The cloudy sky, the downpour and lush greenery all around make the season a beautiful time to enjoy.
But monsoon also brings several diseases due to change of weather, food and water contamination, and breeding of mosquitoes in stagnated waters. Many people get sick during the monsoon as the damp and filthy conditions give insects and pathogenic micro-organisms a good scope to multiply and spread diseases like dengue, malaria, typhoid, viral fever, common cold, gastrointestinal disturbances etc. The few precautions to be taken to prevent them are: 1. Drink plenty of water. Prefer boiled water as drinking clean water is important in order to prevent water-borne diseases. 2. Don't forget to carry your umbrella and raincoat with you always. 3. Avoid getting wet in the rains. 4. Wear full sleeved shirts, pants and socks while going to sleep. 5. Use mosquito repellent on the body. 6. Avoid eating raw foods during monsoon. 7. Wash the vegetables and fruits properly with clean water before consuming. 8. Remember to take bath every time you get wet in the rain or after coming back to home as taking a bath helps in normalising our body temperature. 9. Have warm water or herbal tea. Keep your body dry and moderately warm to avoid cold and cough. 10. Don’t enter air-conditioned rooms with wet hair and damp clothes. 11. Dry your feet whenever they get wet. 12. Don't allow your children to play near stagnant water or water filled puddles. 13. Avoid eating street food. Eat fresh, home-cooked meals. 14. Don't smoke and avoid drinking alcohol as it will decrease your immunity. 15. Wash your hands thoroughly before eating and after you have visited the restroom. 16.
