Letter from the Editor

Behind the cover of an Icelandic Icon

O

Ingibjörg Björnsdóttir EDITOR IN CHIEF

ur cover star is none other than Svala Björgvinsdóttir. Svala is an Icelandic singer, an icon. She has been singing since she was a little girl, following in her father's footsteps. She is one of the judges on The Voice and is representing Iceland at Eurovision. With her living in Los Angeles and always being on the go I felt incredibly lucky when she agreed to sit down for an interview and do a photo shoot for us. It struck me how friendly and down to earth she was when I met her, she oozes warmth and confidence and it amazes me how she has been able to keep her feet on the ground after all her successes. It did not come as any surprise to see how the camera absolutely loves her. Find out why on page 32. The spring is near and I can feel the sun kiss my face a lot more often now - this is my favourite time of year and with new seasons we get new outfits and fashion styles. I am crazy about logos as well as graphic clothing and hoodies are definitely having a moment. Check out our suggestions on page 42. I absolutely fell in love with Jeremy Scott back when he started working with Adidas in 2002 - I remember being in awe when a friend of mine walked in our shared flat wearing his winged Adidas high tops, so check our small feature on page 20. I hope this issue will give you some inspiration for spring wear as well as get you in a Eurovision mood.

My Reykjavík

WHAT DO YOU

LOVE ABOUT

REYKJAVÍK?

ANNA LISA BJÖRNSDÓTTIR Founder of The Iceland Museum Guide My perfect weekend would start with a cup of coffee at Kaffifélagið in Skólavörðustígur and an easily stroll to the National Gallery of Iceland and check out their Vasulka Chamber a center for electronic and digital art in Iceland - a must see for any modern traveller. For lunch I would go to the Reykjavik Art Museum Hafnarhús to the Madam Lauga restaurant and sample delicious italian wine with my healthy scrumptious food from local farmers. For my evening pre dinner fun, I would visit the Maritime museum and check out the Cod War ship Óðinn and get inspired by a small nation not giving up. For further information on the museums in Iceland - visit www.museumguide.com. Have a happy cultural weekend in Reykavík!

CLAUDIA TAVERNESE Grad. Student The thing about Reykjavik I love the most is the beautiful people who inhabit it. Whether it's watching friends play a gig at Húrra, visiting others while they bartend at Kex, or catching them spin a late-night DJ set at Kaffibarinn, a good time is always guaranteed with the locals I am lucky to call my friends. Pair that with a coffee from a nook at Reykjavik Roasters, a late lunch at Garðurinn, some shopping at Dead Gallery, and a much-needed soak at Vesturbaejarlaug, and you have me at my happiest.

RFD recommends

EUROVISION SONG CONTEST 2017 The annual Eurovision Song Contest will take place in Kiev, Ukraine for the 62nd time. The competition consists of two semi- finals held on the 9th and 11th of May. The contestants that go through will compete during the final on the 13th of May. The focus of this issue is mostly on Eurovision and our representative Svala with the song Paper composed by herself along with Einar Egilsson, Lester Mendez and Lily Elise. She is already a strong contestant according to predictions and we love the song with its R&B sass that is mixed with minimalistic electro. Svala's personality really shines through as well as her calmness and self assured persona.

ALEXANDER KIRCHNER Kirchner has been working in the fashion industry for a while now, as a freelance designer, stylist and producer. He recently launched his first new fashion line for both men and women. The line is inspired by R&B and the hip hop culture we highly recommend you having a look at his incredible range of clothing. Our favourite is the shocker - we cant wait to get our hands on one. To see more check out his website: alexander-kirchner.com

FAVOURITE CATWALK DESIGNER JEREMY SCOTT “I wanted to make something intergalactic, fun and fabulous.” Jeremy Scott is a well renowned American fashion designer who has worked in the industry for over twenty years, starting his career in Paris and now works as the creative director for Moschino. He is known for his street art and wild pop art designs. Scott has collaborated with Adidas numerous times since 2002 with perhaps his most memorable design being in 2008 when he designed the winged high top shoes. This season is all about logos and Scott's Spring/Summer line was a love letter to the Old New York city, being all about sleazy 80's fashion, logos and bold colors, which is why we chose the SS17 line to be our fave in this issue. f you made a list of all Icelandic musical touchstones, without a doubt, two things would definitely be found in the top 10: One is Eurovision. The other is Svala Björgvinsdóttir. This year, the two combine, with

Svala representing Iceland with her hit song “Paper” in the competition. Svala has been making music for her whole life, from Scope, to Steed Lord, to her solo work. Along with that, she is also a style icon. Svala shows up to our interview at Harpa decked out in a streetwear-style Adidas outfit and chunky black platforms. It isn't a typical “Eurovision”-look, but that's Svala's thing. Her creativity is outside the box. We sat down to talk about music, style, and the big competition.

Y

ou're so well-known for your music here. You've been doing it for so long. How'd you get your start?

My Dad [Björgvin Halldórsson] is a famous pop singer in Iceland, so it feels like I was born into music. I've been doing it for so long now! So many different projects and collaborations, but Eurovision is the next, and I'm really excited about that. My Dad actually represented Iceland in Eurovision too, in 1995. Anyway, I started recording when I was 7. It was just kids music, like Christmas songs and other cutesy stuff. But then when I was a teenager, I discovered house and

24 | DESIGN | REYKJAVÍK FASHION & DESIGN | www.rfd.is

techno and that whole dance scene and it was like my life. I loved it. I started writing music when I was about 15 or 16 with my first band, Scope, and once I started, I've never stopped. With Scope, it was all house music, but when I started doing solo stuff and was signed to EMI in 1999, I moved into pop and R&B. I never really found myself in that kind of genre though—I tried it and I wrote a lot of songs but it was never who I was musically. I always wanted to go back to electronic. I later wrote a second album—Birds of Freedom—which had a grassroot-y, country-ish vibe. It was cool to explore that that, but deep down I am just an electronic girl.

You've had so many hits: “The Real Me”, “Bed Of Needles”, now “Paper”. How do you go about writing a song? What are you inspired by? It really depends. I am always writing—lyrics, short stories, poems—so I always have stuff lying around. I have written songs alone but I prefer to work with other songwriters or producers because then we get to bounce ideas off each other. It inspires us to work and do more, you know? Sometimes I'll just be doing a session with someone and someone comes up a baseline or a melody on piano or guitar and the song just comes from there. Other times, I'll get an idea for SPRING | 2017

What's been your favorite performance? Anything crazy ever happen? In 2015, we headlined at Gay Pride at San Francisco and that was unforgettable. It was 60,000 people in front of the stage, just an incredible feeling. I have a lot of gay friends and the love and community I felt in front of that crowd—I could have died happy then, you know? It was such a moment for me. In terms of crazy things, mostly clothes ripping. A lot of clothes ripping. I don't fall very often on stage, so I don't have any falling stories, but definitely a lot of clothes ripping. Too many stories. So much clothes ripping! Ok, well we are a fashion magazine, so let's talk style. How would you describe your personal style? I love fashion so much. I am buying stuff constantly! I am always looking for new clothes. Well, I have my own clothing line so I wear that stuff obviously. I also make a lot of my own clothes. I'm definitely not a designer snob. I mean if it's Gucci it's great but it's just a random www.rfd.is | REYKJAVÍK FASHION & DESIGN | DESIGN |

vintage piece, that's good too. I like to mix things. High end stuff with street-wear. Non-label with name brands. Right now I'm decked out in Adidas but tomorrow I might be only wearing vintage. I guess it depends on my mood. In terms of brands, I love Balmain. I mean I can't afford it unless it's the H&M collection or something but I absolutely love them. I'm also a big fan of Alexander Wang and Givenchy. DKNY has a 90s sportswear look that I'm really into right now as well. But in terms of stuff I buy normally: ASOS, Dolls kill, Nastygal, Wildfox, UNIF. Oh, and I love the Yeezy stuff! Right now there's this Balmain H&M collection tuxedo vest that I want so bad. I've been on Ebay all the time searching for that. I love menswear. I wear a lot of tuxedos and pantsuits onstage. Overall, I think I look for unique pieces. Also, I have a lot of tattoos so I dress around them [laughs]. I guess I just like what I like! What are your favorite three pieces right now? I have these leggings that are make out of nude mesh with a tribal tattoo print on them, so it makes it look like your legs are covered in tribal tattoos. I love that, it's so 90s! I also have these PVC pants that look 26 | DESIGN | REYKJAVÍK FASHION & DESIGN | www.rfd.is

like denim. Those are great. I wear them a lot. Recently, I bought a fake fur purple coat—very muppet show—and I'm wearing that all the time. Outside of making music, what are your hobbies? Well I read a lot. I'm a big Sci-Fi/zombie/ post-apocalyptic fan. One of my favorites is, “The Girl With All The Gifts” and right now I'm reading “One Second After”, which is about an EMP attack in Central America. It's survivor book. I love that. Oh—animals! I love animals. Cats especially. My husband and I have a cat named Lucy in LA. I also love nature, hiking, traveling, going to festivals and concerts, being with friends and family, just enjoying life. I'm also a big movie-buff. Blade Runner is my favorite. I've seen it more times than I can count. I have a tattoo for it. Yeah, you have a lot of amazing tattoos. Can you tell me about your favorite? Well I just got one last week that I love from my husband. It's a geometric chest-piece. It represents our life together—our past, present, and future. One of my favorite tattoo artists from Barcelona—Fran Fernandez— was guest tattooing at Memoria Collective

and did it. It hurt like hell, just thin skin over bone and it burned! But I still love tattoos. They are so beautiful. I will definitely be getting more. That's so sweet! You and your husband work together too, right? How do you balance being married and working together? Yes, we were in Steed Lord together for 10 years. We are in Blissful together. We do all our videos together and even if he's directing for someone else, I work as the stylist and art director, so yes, we work on everything together. But, we've been together for so long—we got together in high school and we are soul mates. So when we are working we are not married, we are just working together. It's a good balance though because we are best friends. I wouldn't want it any other way! We're having the time of our lives, traveling the world, making music, making videos. It's the best! And now in Eurovision, we are competing with a song we wrote together. “Paper” is just a dream. Ok. Let's start talking about Eurovision! What inspired you to enter the contest? While when I was little, I loved the Celine SPRING | 2017

Dion song from 1988. That was my song. But I never thought I'd enter the contest as a performer until I saw Loreen do “Euphoria”, that was incredible. I competed in 2008 as a songwriter but when my husband and I wrote “Paper”, he thought “Why don't we send it to Eurovision?” and I thought maybe we should because maybe people will relate to it, and they have! It's getting so much support in Europe. What is “Paper” about? What's the inspiration behind it? I wrote “Paper” with Einar, Lester Mendez and Lily Elise in LA about a year ago. It's about my personal experiences with anxiety and difficult times. I've been very open in the Icelandic media about how I've dealt with anxiety since I was teenager. Music has always been my salvation and safe place from that. Therefore, I wanted to write about what I go through then because we all deal with something in life. No one has a perfect life and this is what connects us as human beings. The word “Paper” in my song is a metaphor for emotions. When I wrote the lyrics with Lily Elise, I wanted to describe the

relationship I have with myself. My anxiety makes me fragile and vulnerable, just like paper. You can take paper and do so many things to it—cut it, burn it, rip it, glue it together, punch holes into it, crumple it, etc. But you can also make beautiful things out of paper, like drawings, paintings, poetry and stories, beautiful letters to loved ones, and so on. The purpose of me writing “Paper” is to be open and honest about my life and not be ashamed about dealing with difficulties because when we are open and talk to each other, we set ourselves free. By not being ashamed about facing our fears, we are not giving up. That's what “Paper” is all about.

never been connected to performing live. Can we talk about the white pantsuit? It was amazing. Who was it by? How'd you choose it?

That's so beautiful, Svala. It's also so relatable. Your performance onstage really relaid that feeling—it was so emotional and powerful. Can you tell me about that?

Hmm, I don't want to give too much away because we are changing the performance for Kiev. We want to elevate the show to work with the huge stage and LED floor and LED wall behind me. I can tell you that my costume will be made by these two amazing designers in LA. It's going to white and very sci-fi inspired, obviously. [Laughs] I just had to go there. I plan on going all out for the big competition to seize the moment. I mean, it's Eurovision!

I love performing live. It's the best high and the best rush you could ever experience. I do get major butterflies though before I hit the stage but when I'm on it and start to sing, well, something comes over me. I feel so alive and happy. Thankfully, my anxiety has

Thank you! It's a Calvin Klein pantsuit I bought in LA. I really wanted to wear a pantsuit in my performance because they always make me feel so powerful. I also wore my white YRU platform sneakers which are both super comfortable and super cool. It ended up being a great look. Can you give us any information on what you're planning for the main stage performance?

Interview

Q & A with Begga & Ásgeir WORDS by: Ingibjörg Björnsdóttir PHOTOS: Courtesy of Bergþóra and Ásgeir

Begga (Bergþóra) and Ásgeir are one hot power couple. They are both professional hairstylists and Begga is also a professional makeup, Airbrush and HD artist. They run a makeup school where they both teach classes and they certainly know the industry like the back of their hand. Begga and Ásgeir are used to working with stars such as Svala Björgvins, and I thought I would ask them a few questions about their work and on how they developed Svala's look for the semi finals for Eurovision. Q: How did you both get started? Á: I started when I was 18 years old. I got interested in the business when I was asked to be a hair model for a hairdresser in my hometown Akureyri. It was for a competition being held there and I won probably because of my beautiful shaped head and outstanding hair type (laughs). After that I decided to go to Reykjavik and learn the trade because there were no schools that offered that education in my hometown. The technical side of it did not dazzle me, that is - to cut, colour and do perm but rather the excitement and the stress of working backstage. I loved the showcase side of hairdressing, that is, doing shows, creating different hairstyles and mixing that in with unorthodox materials as well as fitting the right music to it and trying to create something that people had never seen before. B: I was always getting jobs back in the day doing hair and I kept having to hire makeup artist to do the make up for me but was always disappointed by the outcome and it never turned out to be what I had envisioned. That is why I started learning to do makeup. I went to school to learn the trade and ended up taking classes in every department, that is -theatre,movies and more. Q; Which element of your job do you most enjoy? Á: When you get to create something that is totally your idea and people love it. B: When my artistic abilities get to shine. 34 | FASHION | REYKJAVÍK FASHION & DESIGN | www.rfd.is

SPRING | 2017

Interview Q: You both like to push yourselves and be creative, where do you draw your inspiration from? Á: All over, from music videos, Italian Vogue, movies. I love movies and try to see as many as I can but I am especially a fan of sci-fi. Usually there are some elements in that type of genre that inspires me, whether it is the music, cinematography ,set design, hair, makeup or just the mood - I love it. B: I get my inspiration from music, movies, art, theatre, nature and sometimes I get inspiration from my daughter's drawings.

adding more aqua seal and hairspray. The same went for the eyes, the base was liquid gold put in aqua seal and over that was starlit powder and diamond dust glitter, then framed with a dark eye shadow, an extra thick liquid liner, black mascara and finally two pairs of eyelashes for a more dramatic look. Gold was also added to the waterline of the eye, starlit powder in the inner corner of the eye and a dark eye shadow underneath to strengthen the look. I kept the lips nude by applying a clear gloss and voilà!!

Q: How did you come up with Svala's look at the semi finals? Á: We had been throwing around ideas regarding the look for some time and the final conclusion was to make it simple but graceful. The look came naturally and we work with what suits her face and head shape and what looks good on stage. B: I sometimes work on the spot, that is, we have a certain base of the look and then I just keep adding on to it until we are happy. I always take our surroundings into consideration, what theme we are going for, the costume, lighting and stage settings.

Q: What do you think makes Svala such a great model? Á: She has been in front of the camera since she was a little girl and has endless interest in fashion and everything that is connected to that and so it just comes naturally to her as well as her patience to get it right. B: She has really good bone structure, high cheekbones which is always a good thing and of course it doesn't hurt that Svala is a beautiful woman !!!

Q: How did you develop and build up the look? Á: We are the agents for Make Up For Ever here in Iceland and we are constantly getting new stuff from them. We recently got sent some beautiful glimmer that we were super excited to use. We decided on that to add it on Svala in the semi finals and go all the way because we were there already and thought - what the hell let's just rock it!! Our main mission was for people to be able to see it from the front row as well as from way in the back seats and I think we succeeded. B: When everything was finished, that is the base of the makeup, primer ,Ultra HD foundation,UD powder, I started to use a certain type of gold highlighter palette from Makeup For Ever, starting by contouring the cheekbones. After that I used metal powder and on top of that, starlit powder. It is very important to have the base under the glitter because we don't want to see any skin under the glimmer palettes. I used aqua seal on the skin to have an extra shine and glue for the glitter. Diamond dust was then added to the gold, which is a really small particle of glitter and then I added a small size of glimmer then medium size, large size and finally extra large gold glimmer all the way from the cheekbones into the hairline SPRING | 2017

We love this look and Svala does as well. We don't want to,change something that works so well but of course we have to take it into consideration that the stage in Kiev is a lot bigger Q: Are we in for a surprise with Svala's look during the Eurovision contest? Á: We kinda want to keep a red thread throughout this whole process, but there will be some minor changes, nothing spectacular we think though. We love this look and Svala does as well. We don't want to,change something that works so well but of course we have to take it into consideration that the stage in Kiev is a lot bigger. B: What Ásgeir said!!

Q: What has been the most challenging aspect and most rewarding of your job? Á: Probably when I was hired to design for the opera through my dear friend Filippia, a costume designer. It was not so much the work itself but I had to work with people that didn't want to have me there and seem to be trying everything to make me go away. My motto is that when the time comes where you can't learn from others and you are stuck in your own world, not willing to go out of the box and adding new elements to grow as an artist ,it is time to quit your job and do something else. The most rewarding thing is probably when my daughter Isabella looked deep into my eyes and said "You're the best" B: To sum up my 30 years in this business the most challenging aspect of my job is probably teaching in our school Mask Makeup & Airbrush Academy. I have to be able to transfer my knowledge to my students which can be really difficult sometimes but on the other hand it is really rewarding when I see a student shine after graduation and it is then I feel I did something important. I feel like I have been so fortunate to be able to have the opportunity to work in all areas of makeup in this trade. Q: Do you have any advice for a young hair and makeup artist who is just starting out and wants to be where you are, at the top in this industry? Á: Yes, be humble and fair, always do your best and learn from mistakes, don't be afraid to go out of the box and create something on your own. Never put yourself on a high horse and remember you never finish learning, as soon as you think that, you have to take two steps back and rethink your life, and YES you are never that cool or famous that you stop sweeping the floor or do the dishes :-)) B: Yes, work hard at gathering contacts, from photographers to stylists to other people in the industry. Build up your book and take jobs without pay in the beginning. You don't start at the top of the mountain. Be consistent and nice to people who you are working with, a smile goes a long way.

In his designs, John uses a lot of white and black as well as natural colors. „Then the colors come through art, pillows and things like that. This place kind of captures the feeling of Iceland and Scandinavian design

but at the same time John is very true to his work as a designer.“ Whale jaw bones Áslaug says it became a big task for John to

I decided to buy an apartment in Reykjavík in early 2014. I found a beautiful modern looking apartment and decided I would start spending a little more time in Iceland.“ Áslaug bought the apartment a month before she was introduced to John Brevard. „He showed me some of his work and I immediately loved what he was doing. I told him I was going to Iceland where I had bought an apartment and that I didn't have a single piece of furniture. I asked if he could help me.“ White They went to Iceland where the empty apartment waited for them. The apartment was already quite modern but according to Áslaug there were certain aspects of it that they felt didn't work well together. „We decided to make some renovations to the apartment; change the floors, paint and make some adjustments.“

first buy the most basic pieces of furniture. „We wanted to fill the space and make it interesting; we wanted to look for unique objects. It was nice to do it that way because all of my belongings at this point were in New York so this apartment was empty and we could start completely from scratch. We were lucky to stumble into the store Fríða frænka the weekend it was closing. Hidden back in the corner John found old whale jaw bones he turned into a chandelier above the dining table.“ Back in New York, John made a larger selection of pieces that Áslaug ended up shipping over to Iceland. Apart from that, John designed tables for the apartment because they could not find exactly pieces that would fit in. Colorful works of art All the works of art in the apartment are either by John or by Icelandic artists. „The space is kind of serious being white and black and it could have come off as cold if I didn't warm it up with items and art. So we wanted the art to bring some humour to the space. The art is both humorous and very colorful. There are few pieces – little 50 | DESIGN | REYKJAVÍK FASHION & DESIGN | www.rfd.is

guys - by the Icelandic artist Lína Rut and they are both colorful and make you smile. And then there is a big piece by the Icelander Hrafnhildur/Shoplifter – a big red smiley face in my living room. John then made pieces specifically for the space, such as a large colorful piece in the entrance way when you walk it. There are other artworks by him in the dining room as well as in the living room.“ Áslaug also has a modern apartment in

Miami that John Brevard designed. „That's where I like to go for some sunshine every two or three months.“ White gold Áslaug is wearing jewellery by John Brevard. The pieces are like works of art. „I've met so many talented young designers throughout my career. I think with John it's a mixture of things. The first thing is that I think what he does is truly unique. It is inspired by nature and the world but it also comes from an internal place within him. That's what I love about it. You can look at a piece and immediately know this is designed by John Brevard. I also like that he is a true artist.“ Áslaug says John's jewellery is inspired by sacred geometry. „It's at the core of all of his designs. He has designed few different collections which have different inspirations but there is a theme of kind of marrying the ancient and the futuristic.“ Áslaug's apartment in Reykjavík is like a work of art – or even like a piece of jewellery made of white gold and black diamonds.

DAY TO

NIGHT

STEP BY STEP We are all busy people, most of us constantly running from A to B and keeping up with our social calendars. Many of us carry high heels in our bag and an extra top to be able to convert from daywear to nightwear... like superman. This also rings true for our makeup routine, we want to easily convert from a daytime makeup to a night time look and here are some steps to follow.

STEP 3 Add a starlit powder no. 13 to the inner corners of your eyes and aqua brow no. 10 to your eyebrows. STEP 4 Using a brown eyeliner, draw a line by your eyelashes and then

Recipe

Avocado Fries By: Birna Íris Hlynsdóttir

Prep time: 5 mins Cook time: 20 mins Total time: 25 mins Serves: 2

Ingredients 2 large avocados, sliced Juice of ½ lime (optional) Salt & Pepper ¼ cup of flour (any kind of flour) 1 egg, lightly beaten 4 dl breadcrumbs (or panco) 1 tablespoon nutritional yeast 2 tablespoons oil

Instructions Preheat oven to 200° C. Pour 1 tablespoon oil in sheet tray or baking dish; set aside. Peel the avocado and slice it. Make sure it's bite sized. Toast 4 pieces of bread to make it crunchy and cut them up. Put the bread on pulse in a blender until it's all crumbled. Add nutritional yeast to it. Blend and put aside. Squeeze fresh lime juice onto the avocado slices to preserve their color while baking (this step is optional). Season with salt and pepper. Dredge the avocado slices in flour and then dip in eggs and finally coat in breadcrumbs (or panco). Make sure the avocado slices are coated very well by crumbs. Place in a single layer on the greased sheet pan. Drizzle with the remaining oil or spray with cooking spray. This will help the avocado slices crisp in the oven. Bake for 15 minutes or until the avocados are golden and crispy. If desired, more oil can be drizzled while they are baking for additional crispness.
