WELCOME

It goes without saying: the Greater Bridgton Lakes Region is one of the most beautiful areas in the Northeast. This region is a year-round vacation destination for those who enjoy fishing, hunting, camping, golfing, bicycling, boating, skiing, shopping and dinning. If You like touring museums, attending theatrical shows, exploring art galleries and visiting historical sites, we have it all. Come stay for a day or vacation by the week or season - you’ll find a variety of accommodations including bed and breakfasts, inns, cabins, campgrounds, cottages, motels and resorts to meet your needs and budget. The opportunities are endless. Even though the Greater Bridgton Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce serves thirteen towns- Bridgton, Brownfield, Casco, Denmark, Fryeburg, Harrison, Lovell, Naples, Raymond, Sebago, Stow, Sweden and Waterford, we have welcomed members from many other towns such as Oxford, Auburn and Portland, Maine plus Berlin, NH and North Conway, NH. The hustle and bustle of this growing region brings repeat visitors, their families and friends to experience our pristine waterways, warm sunny days and soft summertime breezes, beautiful fall foliage and a winter wonderland ideal for snowshoeing, snowmobiling, skiing and ice fishing. We guarantee that your first visit here will not be your last. Many visitors return to become full-time residents who will extend a warm handshake, welcome you to their new HOME and ask, “How may I help you?” Locals will be happy to tell you all you want to know about the area. We sincerely hope you will visit us soon. If we can be of any assistance, please let us know. Sincerely, Angie Cook Executive Director 8

TOW N S

BRIDGTON

is a place where you can experience all four seasons. From the beautiful fall foliage seen from any of Bridgton’s hilltop hiking trails to a perfect winter filled with world class skiing, snowmobiling and ice fishing. From lakes and streams that come alive in the spring to the downtown district that erupts with visitors making summer memories. Today Bridgton’s Main Street (Rt. 302) is a thriving, colorful thoroughfare of locally owned shops, galleries and historic homes. Located approximately 35 miles west of Portland and 20 miles east of North Conway, N.H., the town is home to a drive-in movie theater, 18 Hole Golf Course, Shawnee Peak Ski Area, Bridgton Academy, hiking and nature trails and free public beaches and boat launches on Highland Lake, Long Lake and Moose Pond.

NAPLES

is one of the most picturesque small towns in Western Maine surrounded by Maine nature at its finest, it is located in the center of southern Maine’s Lake Region. Naples has a wealth of opportunities for recreation year-round. Visitors are drawn to the Naples Causeway on Long Lake and Brandy Pond where they find our special attraction, the Songo River Queen II, a privately built replica of the famed Mississippi River Paddle Wheelers, multiple marinas and lots of fun activities by day, then spectacular sunsets and bustling nightlife at restaurants and pubs. Special events include a, Memorial Day Parade, the yearly Maine Blues Festival, Classic Antique Wooden Boat Show, July 4th Parade and Fireworks, Naples Main Street at Christmas and several holiday craft fairs. There is much to do in this unique Maine community. Once you visit you will likely find that Naples is a town that you will never forget!

BROWNFIELD

Located only a few miles south of Fryeburg on Route 160, Brownfield feels like its a million miles away. Mountains, forest and the Saco River are the dominant features in this town. Special events include the Brownfield Fire Department’s Turkey Shoot in November and Brownfield Days held each August. Public boat launches are located on Bald Bog, Burnt Meadow Pond and the Saco River.

HARRISON

is located on Route 117 at the northern end of Long Lake. Art and culture are very much alive in Harrison due to Deertrees Theater and Cultural Center. Special events in Harrison are Old Home Days activities including a children’s parade and Christmas in Harrison including the Candlelight Parade and several holiday craft fairs. Restaurants, tourism, summer camps, marinas, home businesses, retail shops and a variety of service industries form the business sector of the community. Public boat launches are located on Crystal lake and Long Lake. 12

TOW N S

CASCO

The village of Casco is less than an hour from the Maine coast or the White Mountains. Quiet sanctuaries, a heron rookery, Point Sebago Resort, Sebago Lake State Park swimming area, an active recreation program for all ages and two playgrounds are all part of Casco. Special events include Maine Maple Sunday, Casco Days, and the Maine Lakes BrewFest. Sawmills, construction firms, summer camps, tourism and many small businesses including crafts, gifts, antiques, machine shops, resorts, a winery, art gallery and a variety of other retail and service businesses fuel the economy. Casco is now proud to boast a new Town Office as well as a recently renovated Community Center with an electric car charging station.

SEBAGO

The village of Sebago is located on the western shore of Sebago Lake. Named by Native Americans as the “great lake” or “big lake,” Sebago is eight miles wide and twelve miles long. Four other ponds, a mountain trail, and plenty of space for other hikes, senior meals every Tuesday at noon, two campgrounds, a library, the Sebago Historical Society Museum, town gym available for rent and a building on the National Register of Historic Places all make Sebago a great place to live. Special events include Maine Maple Sunday including the annual pancake breakfast and Sebago Days events. Local employment includes auto and engine repair shops, construction and excavation, farms, marinas, summer camps, logging and sawmills, education, tourism and antique and specialty shops.

SWEDEN

Tucked into the rolling hills between Lovell, Bridgton, and Waterford, Sweden is only a short distance from anywhere, but feels like another world. A quiet town, Sweden is known for its country roads, stone walls and scenic vistas. Public boat launches are available at Keyes Pond and Stearns Pond and there is a public beach at Keyes (rhymes with “eyes”). Residents participate in recreational events offered by surrounding towns.

RAYMOND

This town is located on Route 302, and is the home of two public beaches, public boat launches on Crescent Lake and Sebago Lake and five ponds for water adventures. The Sheri Gagnon Memorial Park, Panther Run Picnic Area, several hiking trails, as well as mountain bike trails at Morgan Meadows enhance the outdoor activities in Raymond. Businesses are abundant and provide services and jobs in the community ranging from advertising to woodworking along with many other retail and specialty shops. 13

TOW N S

WATERFORD

Located along Routes 35, 37 and 118, the three villages of Waterford are nestled in the rolling hills of Western Maine. With two public beaches, three boat accesses, six ponds, Crooked River, Mud Pond and Keoka Lake, there is plenty to do on the water in Waterford. Special events include the July 4th parade, North Waterford World’s Fair, Waterford Chili Cook-off and Fall Foliage 5K road race plus a one mile fun run for kids. The local economy receives a boost from the building industry, farming, tourism, camps, light manufacturing, and antique and specialty shops.

FRYEBURG

Located on the Saco River and New Hampshire border, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors in Fryeburg. The town is home to Hemlock Covered Bridge, several easy hiking trails, miles of snowmobile trails, Fryeburg Academy, bowling and simulated golf at Saco Valley Sports Center and an outdoor ice rink. Special events include Memorial Day and July Fourth parades, the Beautification Plant Sale, summertime concerts at the Bradley Park Gazebo, Maine Street Festival Arts and Crafts Fair, the Fryeburg Fair, and Maine’s Blue Ribbon Classic. Public boat launches are locate at Clay Pond, Lovewell Pond and on the Saco River.

STOW

Located on Route 113, fifteen minutes from Fryeburg and thirty minutes from Bridgton, Stow is the gateway to the White Mountain National Forest through Evans Notch. Scenic drives, breathtaking mountain views, clear lakes and streams, wildlife and outdoor recreation opportunities including camping, fishing, hunting, hiking, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, mountain biking, canoeing and bird watching all make Stow a special place. Stow’s most notable event was the July 1993 discovery of a 9-pound amethyst crystal at privately-owned Eastman Mine on Deer Hill.

LOVELL

is located on Route 5. With almost every road bearing the word “Hill” in the name, you have an idea of the terrain of this area. There are several hikes for all abilities, two libraries, six ponds, and two public boat launches (Kezar Lake) and miles of trails on the snowmobile route. Special events include Old Home Days activities, the annual Arts and Artisans Craft Show at the New Suncook School, Tour de Lovell, Gasping Gobbler 5k run/walk, and an annual antique show and sale at the Kimball Stanford House.

DENMARK

Located on Route 117, Denmark sits at the southern end of Moose Pond, beneath the shadow of Shawnee Peak. There are at least four trails up the mountain from Denmark locations. Though there is one town operated public boat launch at Moose Pond, the state of Maine maintains three other boat launches in town. Special town events include the Sheep Fest, July 4th parade, the Lions Club Annual Bean Hole Supper and their fall Turkey Shoot. 14

LAKES AND PONDS

You’ll find 82 lakes and ponds to sail, canoe, water ski, swim and fish; a place for year-round recreation. Discover why we’re called the Lakes Region. SEBAGO LAKE Known far and wide for its size, depth and cleanliness, Sebago Lake is the reason many visitors come here and is often the reason they keep coming back year after year. Sebago Lake, the second largest lake in Maine, is roughly fifteen miles long and ten miles wide with a surface area covering over 30,500 acres. The lake is 316 feet deep at its deepest and has an average depth of 107 feet. Spend time on this lake and experience all of its wonderful features: wide expanses of open water, bird and animal life, towering trees along its shoreline, and inspiring views of Mount Washington and the White Mountains of New Hampshire There is a public boat launch on Route 302 in Raymond.

LONG LAKE Long Lake is the northern link in the chain of lakes that includes Brandy Pond and Sebago Lake and is bordered by three area towns: Naples, Bridgton and Harrison. It is considered one of the premier recreational lakes in all of Maine. Long Lake is 11 miles long, a mile wide, and covers 5,295 acres. It is 59 feet deep at its deepest and has a mean depth of 23 feet. With the town of Harrison at its northern most point and Naples at its southern most, the lake features access to restaurants and shops via boat. CRYSTAL LAKE Crystal Lake in Harrison is one of the most popular spots in the area because of its sandy public beach, convenient boat launch and welcoming picnic area; adjacent to the picnic area is a ball field and a playground. Two miles long and a mile wide, Crystal Lake has a surface area of 446 acres and a maximum depth of 65 feet. The public boat launch is located on Route 117.

BRANDY POND Brandy Pond in Naples is the middle link of a chain of three bodies of water that offer boaters over 35 miles for their cruising pleasure. The pond has long been the connection between Long Lake and Sebago Lake. It was originally called the Bay of Naples. Encompassing 740 acres, Brandy Pond has a maximum depth of 44 feet and an average depth of 16 feet.

HIGHLAND LAKE Originally called Crotched Pond, Highland Lake in Bridgton stretches from downtown to the edge of Sweden. The lake is about four miles long and a mile wide and has 1,334 acres of surface area. It has a maximum depth of 50 feet and a mean depth of 20 feet. Magnificent views of Mount Washington and the White Mountains are visible from many points. 28

WOODS POND Named for Bridgton’s first surveyor, Solomon Woods, who came to the area in 1776, Woods Pond is long and narrow. It is a 462-acre body of water. The pond is two miles long and just under a half mile wide. It has a maximum depth of 29 feet and the water quality is average. The town beach and boat launch on Route 117 provide easy access.

MOOSE POND Moose Pond in West Bridgton stretches eleven miles from its wilder reaches in Sweden to its more placid southern end in Denmark. In between find its widest and deepest section, the main basin in Bridgton. The pond encompasses 1,694 acres in total. In the main basin, the pond is nearly a mile wide and its maximum depth reaches 70 feet. From the Moose Pond causeway on Route 302 is one of the most striking views of the area, that of Pleasant Mountain and Shawnee Peak ski area. There’s a public boat launch at the causeway in Bridgton and another in Denmark.

TRICKEY POND Surrounded by tall pines and deciduous forests, the crystal clear water of Trickey Pond in Naples is a great place to feel you are in the heart of the wilderness, with dark starry nights and the cries of the loon. Trickey Pond is about a mile and a half long, a half-mile wide and covers 315 acres. It has a maximum depth of 57 feet and a water quality rating of excellent. A public boat launch is located on Route 114.

29

LAKES AND PONDS

The outlet to Highland Lake features an old milldam and Stevens Brook spillway. The north end of the lake is wilder and offers opportunities for spotting many forms of birdlife and wildlife. It is also the center for many activities during Bridgton’s Winter Carnival. A town beach and public boat launch are located on Highland Road.

LAKES AND PONDS

HANCOCK POND Hancock Pond is located in Denmark and Sebago. It has a surface area of 761 acres, a maximum depth of 59 feet and a mean depth of 17 feet. The pond provides a diversity of sports fishing for every kind of angler throughout the year. Hancock Pond has two public boat launches—one at its northeast end and the other at its southwest corner.

KEOKA LAKE Keoka Lake in Waterford sits at the edge of Waterford Flat, one of the prettiest little New England villages around. The lake is 462 acres in size, has a maximum depth of 42 feet, and a water quality rating of slightly above average. Keoka Lake’s gravel and boulder shoreline provides excellent habitat for both smallmouth and largemouth bass. The public beach and boat launch are located at the northwest corner.

PEABODY POND Named for Captain John Peabody, one of the first settlers of South Bridgton, Peabody Pond is tucked away along the boundaries of Sebago, Naples and Bridgton. It measures 740 acres in size, has a maximum depth of 64 feet and a mean depth of 32 feet. Its water quality is rated as excellent. The rocky shoreline and protected coves provide good fish habitat. A deep chasm that runs through the center of the pond stays cool in the summer giving landlocked salmon, brook trout and lake trout refuge from the warmer waters above. There is a public boat launch on Peabody Pond Road in Sebago.

LOVEWELL POND Lovewell Pond is located in Fryeburg. The pond is subject to flooding when the Saco River floods. During these floods the outlet actually reverses direction and flows back into the pond. It covers 1,129 acres in surface area, has a maximum depth of 45 feet and a mean depth of 17 feet. There is a public boat launch off Rte. 113 at the southwest corner of the pond. KEZAR LAKE Located in the foothills of the White Mountains in the town of Lovell, Kezar Lake is divided into three sections, Upper Bay, Middle Bay and Lower Bay. The Narrows separates the latter two. The lake is nine miles long, encompasses 2,665 acres and has maximum depth of 155 feet, with a mean depth of 34 feet. Two boat ramps are located on the lake, one at Upper Bay and the second at The Narrows.

BEAR POND The pond is the Waterford’s deepest water body at 72 feet. Its surface area encompasses 250 acres. A small area at the south end of the pond is for public access and there is a public boat launch on Rtes 35/37.

Help us protect our lakes by becoming a L.E.A. member! Welcome to the Lakes Region of Western Maine. Perhaps you went to summer camp here, or your grandparents had a camp on one of our many lakes. If it is your first time here, you are probably struck by the beauty of scenery: clean clear lakes surrounded by cool, sheltering forests. What makes our lakes so special is that they have been watched over with great care for 50 years by the Lakes Environmental Association. Since 1970, LEA has been working steadily to make sure our lakes remain as pristine as possible in the face of ever-increasing development. We know that these lakes are an important habitat for fish and wildlife, and a vital source of tourism and recreation. We want it to remain that way for our grandchildren and yours. Our three-pronged approach includes education, advocacy, and remediation. LEA’s Maine Lakes Science Center is a hub of lake science research which brings together R & D groups throughout the state to learn and collaborate. Our staff educators reach 1000 school children annually through a curriculum designed to teach them the importance of lake stewardship. Our team works with local municipalities as well as at the state level to craft lake protection ordinances, and to correct situations where runoff from roads and construction degrades our water quality. Lastly, LEA is at the forefront of invasive species removal with a wide-reaching courtesy boat inspection program and an intensive program of species monitoring and eradication where invasives are found. LEA is a membership driven organization, which enjoys strong community support. The lakes are the heart of this region, and the heart of LEA. Think of us as you boat, fish, swim, paddle and enjoy this wonderful natural resource. We have programs and preserves that are open to the public year-round and welcome you to join us. Please take a moment to visit our website, MaineLakes.org, or pick up a copy of the LEA Lake News which is available at various locations throughout the area. If you are grateful for our beautiful lakes, and the uplifting, restorative way they add to your life, please look for our ad in the Guide and make a donation today.

Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall; do you have a favorite? Most people who reside in this area of Western Maine, do have a favorite, however, there is always something about each season that confirms our commitment to living here year-round. best temps are for summer! Watch for many unexpected sunsets on the waterways, they are truly amazing, so have your camera ready! Boating, hiking, mountain climbing, canoeing, kayaking, fishing; your outdoor activities are endless. Each town has its own small-town celebrations for the July 4th holiday, along with special celebrations that each town offers on a regular basis. Outdoor music, parades, fireworks, boat shows, carnivals, it’s all here as we celebrate living in this beautiful area.

In the winter, we live among many mountains and lakes, and a new snowfall accentuates the beauty in this area. Along with the many activities that result with the appearance of snow, many locals and visitors alike love to take advantage of the opportunity to enjoy skiing, snowmobiling, cross country skiing, ice fishing and winter hikes. And most years we are guaranteed the magic of a white Christmas! Soon, and before you know it, spring appears! So when the temp is approaching 50, we all start preparing for many fun times outdoors! We’ll set up the deck with tables and chairs and get the grill ready to go! Raking the yard for a clean up after all of the snow has melted, lets us have a real “clean” feeling about everything and we feel we can start “a-new”! Outdoor hiking, walking and for those more “fit” squeezing in a run downtown or at Sebago Lake State Park give us the optimal “high” while breathing in the fresh crisp air! Flowers start to bloom and it’s time to get the boats ready for summer fun!

Fall is a time for getting ready for winter. Putting all our summer toys away, and then enjoying a warm campfire as the weather changes to much cooler nights. Lots of residents and visitors use this season to enjoy hunting, four wheeling, hiking and the local county fairs. Of course there are plusses and minuses to each season, but as a full time resident of this beautiful area the good always outweighs the few minuses that we endure. When I leave my home, I always see the beautiful landscape that is now my “home”. Our favorite comment is “We live here!”

Summer comes in like a blast, although not quite as hot as those states south of us, it’s beautiful, balmy and indicative of what the

PICNIC AREA

BREWFEST

With live bands providing music all day (the event usually runs from 11-4) you get your fill of a multitude of food offerings from pulled pork sandwiches, lobster rolls, pizza, and of course, the traditional hamburgers and hot dogs! Our brewers come from Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont. A brochure at the entrance will guide you to your favorite brews!

Put on by the Greater Bridgton Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce Since its inception in 2004, the Maine Lakes Brewfest, Sampling the Best, has been one of the most popular and well-attended events that the Chamber holds in the area each year. Organized and set up by Mr. and Mrs. Tux Burke, of Bridgton, and with the assistance of many chamber members and volunteers, the first Brewfest was held in Casco with 300 attendees. This event has grown so dramatically over the years, we are now known as the largest Brewfest in the state!

At our Brewfests, we traditionally hold a 50/50 raffle to support the Fireworks display at our Maine Lakes Winter Carnival, on the beach at Highland Lake in Bridgton usually held in February, or we donate half to a non-profit.

Due to the pandemic and the State’s regulation on crowd attendances, The Maine Lakes Brewfest had to be cancelled for the first time in its 16 years! Traditionally, the Brewfest is held “on the beach” at Point Sebago in Casco, and previously has had close to 3000 attendees coming from multiple states all across the U.S. - Texas, New York, Georgia, Illinois, Missouri and Florida! As the Brewfest has grown over the years, changes were made to accommodate the increased attendance so that all of our guests had a comfortable and fun day. We have always touted the saying “Rain or shine, we’ve got you covered!” All brewers, food vendors, bands and volunteers working the front end check–in areas have been covered by tents! We now have 7 tents, providing coverage from rain or SUN for up to 32 Brewers and up to 15 Food Vendors.

We’re not sure what will happen this year, as we are still under COVID regulations. However, we’ll be sure to come up with some type of event so you can all enjoy samples of our local Breweries! Watch for news as we move closer to September! Many thanks to our expansive Brewfest committee, over 75 Volunteers, specifically, Mr. & Mrs. Tux Burke, and our Sponsors: Point Sebago and Ruth York, High Wire Hydroponics, Mt. Washington Radio, Bridgton News, and Trashman! We could not pull off this amazing event without their continued support year after year! Angie Cook www.gblrcc.org/brewfest/

When the time comes for you to retire and settle down in place for the rest of your life, it’s beneficial that you do your research. Lately, the state of Maine and the Lakes Region have become one of the more popular states and areas to retire in for many reasons.

with similar interests, whether it’s skiing in the winter or golfing, sailing, or hiking in the warmer months. Essentially there are two types of people those who love warm and those who love Maine. For people who want an active, outdoor lifestyle, the Lakes Region has all the outdoor activity you might want. Plus, the physical beauty is simply outstanding!

Retiring in the Lakes Region means being surrounded by gorgeous scenery and having plenty to do in your free time. The healthy fresh air lifestyle has persuaded a significant number of retirees to ignore the conventional wisdom of spending one’s elder years someplace warm and sedentary. For anyone who enjoys the outdoors and nature, Maine is the place to be! The move to Maine in retirement can happen in many ways. One of the most popular is the renting or purchasing of a small camp to be used as a vacation retreat prior to retirement. Then when the time is right “trading up” to a year-round residency is a logical progression. This trend has resulted in enclaves of the outdoor-oriented groups forming around the state. The Lakes Region offers spectacular skiing and other winter sports, of course, but also many choices in quiet living. In the spring, summer and fall, golfing, the mountains, lakes, and trails await. In many planned developments, whether independent or assisted-living, there is often an active community of individuals 40
