GEORGE CLINTON & PARLIAMENT FUNKADELIC
George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic will kick off Blue Note’s Miami 2022 pop-up series. Clinton and the Parliament/Funkadelic machine revolutionized R&B during the ’70s, twisting soul music into funk by adding influences from late-’60s heroes Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, and Sly Stone. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (by Prince himself!) in 1997, and received a GRAMMY® Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019. The living legend who gave the world P-Funk, Atomic Dog, One Nation Under a Groove and Mothership Connection. With a career spanning five decades, three dozen albums, 40 r&b hits, 3 platinum albums and a sweeping musical influence, George Clinton is a fearless creative mastermind who keeps on rocking. Let’s celebrate this newly un-retired living legend’s 80th birthday together!

ROBERT GLASPER & SPECIAL GUESTS
Robert Glasper, who continues this Blue Note series, is the leader of a new paradigm in jazz, with a career that spans musical and artistic genres. He has won 4 Grammys and 8 nominations across 7 categories, as well as an Emmy. Most recently he released the third installment of his acclaimed Black Radio series (a breathtaking fusion of jazz, rap, hip-hop and R&B). The pianist and keyboard wizard and composer is known for setting a groove, as much as for his star-studded guest lists. Glasper’s musical universe encompasses a who’s who in r&b, hip-hop, jazz and beyond. His last visit to the Bandshell included a freestyle drop-in by Common, and a surprise cameo by Cuban funk sensation Cimafunk. Fans await the delightful surprises that this special residency will bring.

LOS AMIGOS INVISIBLES Gozadera” (Spanish for a good time!) is synonymous with the music of Los Amigos Invisibles. The Venezuelan group debuted in 1995 with an irresistible fusion of Latin rhythms with fiery funk and lounge music that demands a good time. The band got their first break in the US when David Byrne discovered one of their albums in a NYC record shop, and released their music on his Luaka Bop label. Byrne opened doors for the band across the globe and Los Amigos Invisibles soon became an international touring machine. They moved to New York City from Caracas and entrenched themselves in the local scene. Over the years, the band has established themselves in the international dance music scene and expanded their sound, while raking in Grammy nominations and wins year after year and performing across the globe. In recent years, they have established their own record label - Gozadera Records – and have tightened their hooks and focused their songs, recording their most accessible work yet. Welcome to the Bandshell!

CÉU + FRANCISCO EL HOMBRE BRAZILIAN TROPICALIA NOW
Tropicalia - Brazil’s psychedelic explosion of music, art and culture is alive today. CÉU is one of the most influential Brazilian artists of her generation. Her eight albums have been awarded multiple Latin Grammys and other milestones. Initially moving effortlessly through a palette of influences (samba, reggae, rock, MPB, soul, and pop), her subsequent releases explored the reggae and dub family tree, nocturnal synth sounds, sleepy psychedelia. Rhythm Foundation presented Céu’s US debut concert in 2007, and is proud to welcome this dynamic chanteuse back to the Bandshell. FRANCISCO, EL HOMBRE is a quintet from Sao Paulo formed by two Mexican brothers and three Brazilians. They are spark and explosion, glitter, indie rock infused with cumbia and maracatú. Rolling Stone Brazil called them a mix between Manu Chao and Naçao Zumbi, a modern incarnation of tropicalia. Through their music, videos and live shows, the group addresses panLatin culture, LGBTQ rights, feminism, and social and political movements in Brazil.

PERINÉ

Monsieur Periné: “We are music in motion. Travelers from port to port singing to the people, the road and the landscape from the inside. We are Catalina García and Santiago Prieto. Born and raised in Colombia, lovers of our land and our roots.” Formed a decade ago in Bogotá, Monsieur Perine has cultivated a fervent following by blending the spirit of 1930s Django Reinhardt French gypsy jazz music with the joyous and sophisticated sounds of contemporary Latin American pop — a worldly, boundary-blurring approach places them in the same echelon as contemporaries Natalia Lafourcade, Carla Morrison, and Bomba Estéreo. The duo are joined by a great band (Darwin Páez on drums, Miguel Guerra on percussion, Abstin Caviedes and Jairo A. Barrera on horns and Eva Peroni on bass), arriving at the Bandshell after playing major festivals and venues worldwide. The group has been preparing for the 2022 release of Volverte a Ver in part with a Tiktok contest to reunite with their fans during the pandemic.

SILVANA ESTRADA “Pure Beauty: This Mexican artist’s debut is gorgeously understated, guided by her gauzy voice andrich, acoustic arrangements. Tapping into the vastness of Mexican music, she thrills in simplicity.”
—Rolling Stone
At 24, Silvana has already been hailed as “one of Mexico’s greatest young talents and vocalists” by KCRW’s José Galvan. She has performed and recorded with artists including Natalia Lafourcade, who like Silvana, belongs to a vibrant community of indie artists in Mexico City; Uruguayan singer/songwriter Jorge Drexler, Chile’s Mon Laferte and Spanish group Love of Lesbian. Now she visits Miami on her US debut tour, armed with her lovely voice and a cuatro.

LA DAME BLANCHE
The Cuban singer, flautist and percussionist Yaite Ramos Rodriguez grew up amid family gatherings of extraordinary musicians, and the cream of Cuban music. Her father, the trombonist Jesus “Aguaje” Ramos, was the artistic director of the legendary Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club. Following her heart, she decamped to Paris, and immersed herself in the City of Light’s melting-pot. She joined the all-girl salsa band Rumbana, and the Grand Orchestre du Splendid, became a backup singer with Sergent Garcia and live singer for El Hijo de la Cumbia. These experiences helped give birth to her musical alter-ego “La Dame Blanche,” finding her unique voice in a sonic jungle that fuses AfroCuban rumba, hip hop, reggae, and jazz. This concert will be her Miami debut.

North Beach Social, the 3rd Thursday free monthly concert and community get-together, resumes in October. With this series, we empower our favorite locally-based artists to dream big, celebrate milestones, and reach out to a global audience (because the show is also live-streamed) Earlier this year we were blown away by alt-folk duo Jay Thomas’s Knight New Works-commissioned concept album, presented live with a string quartet, dancers and immersive visuals. Electronic hip hop production team Paperwater launched their new Bem 3.0 project with their circle of talented vocalists, DJs, musicians and spoken word artists. Cafe Brasil radio show celebrated its 20th anniversary with the massive Gafieira Rio Miami samba big band. Young sensation Gaiya showcased new works, and proved that sometimes the hype is real. And Le Coco Ramos celebrated her new work with as a newly signed Warner Latino artist. Find our video archives and enjoy these and other stellar sets again! And mark your calendar for Third Thursdays at the Bandshell when the series resumes in October 2022. CLOCKWISE, ORDINARY BOYS, JAY THOMAS, PAPERWATER, GAIYA. PHOTO CREDIT OS PHOTO STUDIO

ABOUT US We create shared cultural experiences that build and strengthen the diverse communities of South Florida through the presentation of live music. We believe:
• international cultural exchange injects empathy and positivity into the global conversation; • Cultural activity develops community and builds neighborhoods; • Sustainable practices are possible in event productions; • Miami is a global city, and our artists and audiences are world‐class.
THE RHYTHM FOUNDATION has been presenting international music since 1988, and we look back at a body of work that now spans decades. When we began, Miami was a different place than the international crossroads we know now. It makes us proud to think our programming has contributed to the growth of our hometown. In 2015 The Rhythm Foundation was awarded management of the historic North Beach Bandshell by the City of Miami Beach. Our contract was renewed in 2019, extending for up to nine years. At the Bandshell, we present more than 80 events annually, welcoming almost 100,000 people each year. Programs are a mix of Rhythm Foundation productions, community and civic events, partner events by local cultural and professional presenters.
