The City of Boca Raton presents Downtown Boca’s Brazilian Beat, designated as one of South Florida’s official annual Brazilian Independence Day Celebrations by the Consulate General of Brazil in Miami. This free evening features a headline concert by Bossacucanova, as well as performances by the Rose Max Samba Band; capoeira; zumba; Brazilian food, art, fashion and fun. Electro-bossa pioneers BOSSACUCANOVA are celebrating 15 years together, making music that completely conjures Brazilian bliss. The Riobased trio take the classic heart of cool 1960s bossa nova, and make it new again with fresh, groove-filled electronic wizardry, always treating the original spirit with the utmost respect. DJ Marcelinho DaLua, bassist Márcio Menescal and keyboardist Alex Moreira burst onto the international dance music scene in 1999 with Revisited Classics, a collection of both new and old bossa nova songs given new life and vigor through the application of funky breakbeats, skillful turntablism, electronic manipulation and adventurous mixology. The idea of fusing the smooth sounds of classic bossa nova recordings with upto-the-minute electronic elements wasn't new. But Bossacucanova's approach to Euro-Brazilian fusion is unique, in part because the trio treats bossa nova as the main dish and the breakbeats, electronica and other embellishments as garnishes, rather than the other way around. Live, the group includes percussionist Dado Brother and the beautiful vocals of Brazilian singer Cris Delanno, Flávio Mendes on guitars and vocals and Rodrigo Sha on vocals, sax and flute. Their new release, Our Kind of Bossa (Six Degrees Records) is notable for the caliber of special guests - here is a musical house party that brings together many of their heroes, inspirations, friends and family. Bossa nova legend Roberto Menescal (Márcio's father); the iconic vocal group Os Cariocas; MPB scion Maria Rita; guitarist Oscar Castro Neves; Emilio Santiago; and so many others. It also sees the band focusing equally on Brazil's other homegrown conconction: samba.

CAETANO VELOSO Abraรงaรงo Saturday September 13 Fillmore Miami Beach

CAETANO VELOSO's album Abraçaço, which means “big hug” in Portuguese, was released in North America on Nonesuch Records earlier this year, following major accolades and success in South America. It won a Latin Grammy for Best Singer-Songwriter Album, and earned the #1 spot on Rolling Stone Brazil's Best Albums list. Produced by guitarist Pedro Sá and Caetano's son Moreno Veloso, Abraçaço is the final installment of a trilogy with the youthful trio he employed on 2007's Cê and 2009's zii e zie known as the Banda Cê: Pedro Sá on electric guitar, Ricardo Dias Gomes on bass and Rhodes piano, and Marcelo Callado on drums. “We are people of different generations sharing similar musical and human interests,” Veloso says. The sound of the album, which forms the core of the tour, is a fusion of the traditional Tropicália style and the indie pop of contemporary Rio. Caetano has also revived and rearranged many of his classics from the 1970's and 1980's to the delight of his band, and especially his audience. Veloso has been at the forefront of Brazilian culture since the late 1960s, as a co-founder of the uniquely Brazilian psychedelic cultural explosion Tropicalia. The echoes of the work he and his partners - Gilberto Gil, Maria Bethânia, Gal Costa, Os Mutantes and others - made continues to rumble through music and art across the Americas and Europe today. Yet Veloso has never become a nostalgia act. He has continued to create modern, vital music and art on an international level. With this tour, he closes out a phenomenal trilogy of modern music, and prepares his audience for the next leap. “The Brazilian singer and songwriter is consistently one of the most literate and beguiling forces in music.”- NPR

MEMBERS’ SEASON LAUNCH PARTY Thursday September 18

Our Season Launch Party this year is a virtual trip to Brazil, coinciding with the Grand Opening of Perez Art Museum Miami's (PAMM) new exhibition, Beatriz Milhazes: Jardim Botântico. Rhythm Foundation Members will enjoy exclusive free access to the museum exhibition and our private event on the PAMM terrace at the opening. The party will feature a private viewing of the new exhibition (also open to PAMM members), a complimentary bar with Heineken and Leblon caipirinhas, light bites from PAMM's wonderful Stephen Starr Caterers, and an amazing silent auction. This special night features the Miami debut of ALMA TROPICALIA, a DCbased band that reimagines the psych-samba sounds of 60's Tropicália music from Brazil. Their mind-bending mix of tropical rhythms, soulful funk grooves and day-glo psychedelia have quickly earned the group ecstatic reviews and packed performances across the region. The lineup combines jazz vocalist Elin (featured on Thievery Corporation's Brazil-inspired album “Saudade”) with the unhinged experimentation of some of the top backing musicians in today's rock and world music scene (featuring members of Cyro Baptista's Beat the Donkey, Bio Ritmo, and more). Between sets enjoy Brazilian grooves from DJ Marcello Bentine. Beatriz Milhazes: Jardim Botânico This new exhibition at PAMM (September 19, 2014 - January 11, 2015) is the first major US retrospective on Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes (b. 1960), and will feature the artist’s large-scale abstract paintings inspired by Brazilian and European Modernism, Baroque forms, popular culture, and the decorations of Carnival. The exhibition will include works produced over the last 25 years of the artist’s career and examine their evolution from softer, more decorative forms to harder-edged abstraction. DIEGO EL CIGALA Saturday November 22 Fillmore Miami Beach

photo: Jordi Socias

DIEGO EL CIGALA is, quite simply, the most exciting and innovative flamenco singer in the world today. Passionate, profound, and immensely proud of his Spanish gypsy heritage, El Cigala has been called “the Sinatra of flamenco.” His voice is earthy, exultant and richly emotive. He is one of those rare crossover artists who has stayed true to his musical heritage while achieving name recognition with mainstream audiences around the world. Born into a family of flamenco musicians, El Cigala began his solo career in 1997. A mere four years later he was at the Latin Grammys, his nominated for Best Flamenco album. That was just the beginning of much bigger things to come. A small initial collaboration between El Cigala and legendary Cuban pianist Bebo Valdés led to the 2003 release of a collaborative duo album. Lágrimas Negras (Black Tears) became one of the most astonishing breakthrough successess in the realm of world music. Aside from winning El Cigala his first Latin Grammy (he now has three), Lágrimas became a huge global hit thanks to a combination of mind-blowing live shows, rave reviews, and ecstatic word of mouth. This groundbreaking disc, with its fusion of gypsy fire and complex Cuban rhythms, sold more than a million copies worldwide. Aside from winning numerous awards, Lagrimas Negras was fawned over by Britain’s BBC Radio and hailed as “record of the year” by the New York Times. El Cigala’s latest recording, 2013’s Romance de la luna Tucuman, offers a fresh take on the Argentinean tango tradition. Tucuman triumphed at the 2013 Latin Grammys, winning El Cigala a third Grammy, his second for Best Tango. This landmark album will be the focus of this latest tour.

Diego has one of the most beautiful flamenco voices of our time, a voice of sweetness that flows over everything. – Paco de Lucía

“South Florida is as much an idea as it is a place, and few events express that idea as consistently as Big Night in Little Haiti. As a live music performance unfolds on the third Friday night of each month, the plaza at the Little Haiti Cultural Center is a blur of colors and skin shadings, hipsters and families, hip-hoppers and old-guard survivors. Make your way through the packed yard and bits of conversation come at you in a jumble of languages and accents. The event is a collaboration between the Cultural Center and the Rhythm Foundation. And while the foundation has presented bigger shows and better-known names, few events embody its mission, and its success, better than Big Night” - Miami Herald Haitian Music • Visual Art Exhibitions • Hosted Kids Activities • Kreyol Cuisine and specialty Caribbean cocktails • Open Studios • Special Events • Arts and Crafts vendors • Rara • Enjoy Little Haiti
