Tracy Levine ‘Painting in a field of poppies or on a stormy, heather-covered moor is an emotional and exhilarating experience for me’ Award-winning Cumbrian artist Tracy Levine brings together a new collection of her paintings for Here & There, the first solo show at The Gallery at Rheged. The works in this exhibition were produced during a period working in and around Swaledale in Yorkshire and, by contrast, in the hilltop villages of the Languedoc region of South West France.

Although inspired by quite different rural landscapes, Levine’s works have mainly been created through working ‘en plein air’ - whether in open moorlands, in vineyards, in wildflower meadows or on village streets. Levine’s paintings are a direct emotional response to these environments: her expressive use of vibrant colour vividly conjures up a distinctive sense of place and feeling.

Levine describes her practice as one of ‘being totally immersed in the landscape’. Revisiting the same locations again and again, painting from dawn until dusk, allows her to ‘tune in to the essence of a place’.

Here & There expresses the particular pleasure she takes in losing herself in a landscape, and evoking its specific atmosphere, its colour and light.
