Commodore’s Message
The Bridge “En Mai fais ce qu’il te plaît” Loosely translated as “In May do as you please” – well that is very much the spirit, that come what May we are going to let loose and have some fun. Starting appropriately with the Nations’ Cup, which last year was such a blast (as evidenced by the photograph above) and in difficult circumstances if you recall! So, in 2022 we expect an event of epic proportion to celebrate our communal return to the waters of Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour. And as you read these lines it is my genuine belief that participants in that perennial favourite will have had a truly memorable time, with pictures to be shared aplenty and tall tales galore; chiefly from the rowdiest corner populated by sailors in green attire and sporting peaked caps! Some time ago I wrote: “The presentation of the then 116-year-old Georgian silver vase with dolphin handles, which was purchased out of the HKRNVR pre-war mess funds, was handed to Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club Commodore, N.V.A. Croucher by Lieutenant Commander J.C.M Grenham RNVR (Ret.) for a competition to perpetuate the memory of HKRNVR members who gave their lives during World War II. Initially the intention was that the race course would replicate the routes that the HKRNVR would patrol. Over time sadly, elements out of our control have forced us to fall back on our tried and tested courses. Still a very fun and competitive race. But we shall renew with tradition and history. The grandson of Lieutenant Commander Grenham, Nick, is a member and we hope he will be able to handover the trophy once prize giving resumes!” Well I do hope that this historical regatta will finally take place now on 7 May, which is integral in awarding the Top Dog Trophy and its associated bragging rights! And the fun just does not end just yet! The Spring Regatta is scheduled over the 14 and 15 May weekend, where close to 100 boats of all shapes and sizes are expected to take part. Time to get your vessels in racing condition after our imposed idleness and a quick brushing up of Racing Rules of Sailing might not go amiss either! As you can see everyone has been working double time to ensure the Club can reschedule as many sailing, rowing and paddling events as is physically possible to ensure that you can hit the water running so to speak. So spare a thought for all individuals, volunteers and staff, assist them whenever possible and be tolerant! And the activity does not end with our sports. You may have noticed that work has been undergoing in the Chart and Club Rooms, adjacent to the Main Bar. These two areas experience some heavy usage, which has actually increased as members seek refuge therein to do some quiet work. And as neither has been renovated in over 20 years, we decided to take the opportunity to carry out a soft refurbishment, which shall see new furniture and a redesign of the Club Room to incorporate the now obsolete Telephone Room. This additional space will provide a more comfortable and practical environment for short meetings or temporary working environment, where the usage of phones will be allowed! So no more excuses!

One floor up, the Ward Room will be modified into an elegant and cosy pre and post dinner drinks venue in an atmosphere reflecting the tradition and history of our Club. Once again we have relied on the flair and talent of our quasi in-house designer Inge! Well-known to all, our Past Commodore has been involved with most major refurbishments and will be able to provide that deft touch. And for those who do not know her, I encourage you to log on to our YouTube channel, RHKYC, subscribe and watch the recent chat we had with her.
Still on the topic of Club history, we are also in the process of carrying out interviews of individuals associated with the Club and the sea. Done in conjunction with HKShifts, this series tries to document in print the work and impact these people have had. Still in development, we hope to be able to share some of these portraits in a not too distant future. Finally and still dealing with history, our archives, or more precisely relevant and selected items, will be shared and exhibited in strategic locations around Kellett Island. On a quarterly basis, worthy items will be displayed with explanations as to their nature and relevance to our Club. The objective is simply to impart more about our history and how events and people have shaped the Club we are today. With this in mind, my story ends here for now. May we finally have a great month!
如果你認識任 何會員,於會內曾有經 歷或趣事,請透過電郵 koko.mueller@rhkyc.org.hk 通知我們。 The Bridge
Apart from being fun, these videos serve to preserve some memories of our Club through the eyes of some of the players of the age. This is the second one and we are planning to shoot a further three. If you know of anyone with tall stories and fun facts about his or her time at the Club, please reach out to koko.mueller@rhkyc.org.hk.
General Manager’s Message Finally, we are seeing the easing of social distancing restrictions and the reduction of quarantine requirements that are needed to bring the chance of a return to ‘normal’ life that little bit closer. All being well restrictions will ease further later this month and then again even more in June. Fingers crossed, well, let’s keep everything crossed in fact!
The Bridge
But, after so long without sport, May is going to seem like a sporting bonanza of activities as we play catchup and squeeze in the Nations’ Cup, the HKRNVR Memorial Vase, the Spring Regatta and the 6th Harbour Regatta whilst regular class racing is sprinkled in between any gaps. Socially, we celebrate Mother’s Day this month. On Saturday 7 May we have a Mother’s Day Cupcake Workshop at Kellett Island so perhaps while mum is out racing in the HKRNVR Memorial Vase, dads can bring the little ones to this fantastic activity. The next day, Sunday, is of course Mother’s Day itself and we have a special celebration buffet in the Bistro and a set menu in the Compass Room.

The Sierra Cantabria Wine Dinner is being hosted in the Compass Room on Thursday 12 May and as it’s been such a long time since we’ve managed to actually have a wine dinner at dinnertime, it seems like quite a novel idea! Spain’s Bodegas Sierra Cantabria was founded in 1870 and has been passed through the caring, grape growing, hands of five generations of the family. They have been able to pass down from father to son both knowledge and tradition yet, at the same time, adapting them to the new advances in technology and always maintaining their respect for the soil and the vines in their care. The family and their wineries enjoy prestige both in Spain and internationally and have won numerous awards and prizes. Matched with an exquisite menu by our head chef and sommeliers, this will be a wine dinner not to miss. On Saturday 21 May join us at Middle Island for a Greek Party with a DJ! Actually, the Greek Islands Party will be running for much of the day (full details to be announced online) and then we’ll cap off the evening with a DJ performing from 1800hrs to 2200hrs. Come along and enjoy typical Greek favourites such as Chicken Souvlakis, Shrimp Kataifi and some special Greek cocktails. And we round off the May social calendar with a wine dinner that is back by popular demand. The Frei Brothers and Louis Martini Wine Dinner was so popular in the past that we simply had to have them back again, this time it will be on Thursday 26 May. A joint wine dinner featuring wines from one of the new world’s premier wine growing regions, these Californian wines from the Napa Valley and Sonoma Country are definitely not to be missed. And after this whirlwind of a month, we have much to look forward to as we hopefully open up further in Phase II of the roadmap, and hopefully soon after, in Phase III. As I said at the start, let’s keep everything crossed! I look forward to seeing you all at the Club.

Lowell Chang, Vice Patron The Bridge
An utterly fantastic interview with RHKYC Vice Patron Lowell Chang covering everything from how he started sailing in San Francisco, meeting Phyllis and moving to Hong Kong... reminisces about all manner of exciting events and incredible people, how he helped get the Around the Island Race to actually go around the island... keeping the Club at Kellett Island... and of course the ‘Royal’ debate.

Lowell Chang joined the Club in 1972 and became a Life Member in 2013. As a keen Dragon class sailor, he was the Dragon Class Sailing Captain and Crew Co-ordinator from 2001 to 2002, the Dragon Class Results Officer from 2002 to 2016, and most importantly he was a co-founder of Prince Henrik Silver Trophy in 1988. He has also spent tremendous amount of time and energy in serving numerous committees since 1986. The committees he has served include House, Middle Island, Strategic Planning, Sailing and the General Committee; and he was also a member of the
Kellett Island Reprovisioning Working Group and the Private Recreational Lease Response Working Group. Being Rear Commodore Club from 1989 to 1991; Vice Commodore from
1996 to 1998 and then Commodore from 1998 to 2000, his commitment to the sport, and to the Club, is unquestionable. Lowell was appointed Vice Patron in 2021.

Volunteers – A Review of the As this article is being written we are all eagerly looking forward to 22 April when we hope we will all be allowed to start to sail (and race) again, and the Sailing Office and the Club’s Race Officers are starting to plan the resources needed to run racing. In anticipation of a return to activity both as a sailor and a volunteer on a committee boat, I’ve done a bit of a ‘wander down memory lane’ to reflect on how the role of race management volunteers at the Club has evolved over the last decade or so. number of factors influenced the growth of the volunteer base: in 2010 the Club was awarded the bid for hosting the 2013 Flying Fifteen World Championships, in 2012 the Race Management SubCommittee was formed under the Sailing Committee and in the same year the Club arranged for Rob Lamb, an International Race Officer to come to Hong Kong to run a series of seminars training those members interested in learning how to become a Race Officer. The combination of these factors lit a spark of interest in many who wanted to have the

opportunity to help the Club in the running of these events. I was one of those individuals. By the time the Fifteen Worlds took place in October 2013, the list of individuals who were involved as volunteers had grown from a handful of names to over 100 people – doing jobs both on the water (committee boats, mark laying boats, safety boats, jury boats) and onshore (measurement, registration, launch and retrieve). At that event it worked
The next few years were busy ones with the arrival in 2014 of the annual Hong Kong Race Week in its current format, the Etchells Worlds in 2015, the Optimist Asians in 2016, the 29er Worlds in 2017 and the Hong Kong stop over for the Volvo Ocean Race in 2018. By the end of the 2018-19 season the volunteers list had grown to nearly 1,000 names and at the end of the last season it was over 1,200 names long. These individuals give up over 1,000 days a year to come and help at our events and in a year with international events that number can go up to 1,800 volunteer days.

out that you need roughly the same number of volunteers as there are competitors; and that ratio was also true for the subsequent Worlds.
Feature | Volunteers – A Review of the Last Decade With the growth in the number of people who were keen to help, the Sailing Office drafted in the skills of both members and members of staff to help train people in all aspects of the race management role; from how to log wind readings, how to lay a mark (in the right place) and regular safety boat training. As the size of the base grew, so did standards within the base and Hong Kong now has two International Race Officers (Charlie Manzoni and Brenda Davies), two International Jurors (Tom Sheppard and Ben Harding), one International Umpire

All of these individuals are more than generous with their time and knowledge and frequently can be found helping as race officials or jurors at our larger events. Alongside this investment in people there has also been an investment in equipment. From that same point in 2010, the Club acquired a second
While this article has concentrated on the sailing race management volunteers, the same degree of growth has been seen on the rowing and paddling side of the Club; and particularly in recent years it’s been great to see sailors helping out at rowing and paddling events and vice versa.
Becoming involved as a race management volunteer has been particularly rewarding for many of us and some abiding friendships have been made; normally cemented over a glass back on shore where we celebrate a job well done or commiserate each other over wind shifts, failure to remember a race management procedure or just plain old equipment failure. If you want to get involved in any aspect of volunteering, that would be fantastic and all you have to do is talk to the Sailing or Rowing Offices and let them know you want to get involved and help out. Hopefully our next season will be one without Covid related shutdowns and we will all be able to get out on the water to enjoy either competing or volunteering at the Club’s many events.

committee boat (Hector Ross) and the Protector (Teddy Chien) which is used as our main safety boat and replaced the Club’s main committee boat (Kellett VIII). The Club is also in the process of replacing the elderly fleet of Cheoy Lees. There has also been significant investment in expanding the fleet of RIBs which are used for safety boats and, for larger events like Hong Kong Race Week, for mark laying and as jury boats. In addition, there is a regular replacement programme for marks, anchors, warps, flags, wind reading instruments and all of the other equipment needed by the race management team.

pproximately 12nm from Kellett Island, Cheung Chau is an easy day trip. There is generally sufficient anchorage at the southern end of the typhoon shelter and sampans running between the Sai Wan and main piers, which saves the hassle of launching your own RIB. The only issue with flagging a sampan down is that they often want to wait until they have enough passengers boarding at the Sai Wan pier before picking yachties up and could run out of room. If you prefer the independence of your own RIB, there are several spots to tie up before the main pier. We enjoy having sundowners at The Pink Pig Music Bar & Restaurant – they have parked several rickshaws along the waterfront and modified them to include tables – giving you a bit of privacy despite being right next to the main thoroughfare. On the other side of the island, the folks running the Chau Windsurfing Center are very welcoming and it is quite the experience to witness a medical evacuation. The helipad is only a few feet away and you could not get better front row seats.

Around Sam A there are plenty of walking trails and restaurants to take a break from swimming and relaxing. Sam A has no road access, the nearest road is 5.5km away at Wu Kau Fang and the nearest ferry is at Li Chi Wo pier, but only on public holidays and weekends. At night all the walkers exit the area, leaving a tranquil mooring. As Sam A is in the marine park, so there are no fisherman, unlike other areas of Double Haven. Sam A has the convenience of three open air restaurants with 5 minutes walking distance of the pier. So the cook can have a break! Green Villa serves a short Hakka menu with daily specials overlooking an old green meadow off the main hiking trail. You can pre-order fish and it has a big old outdoor brick wok to braise the pork. The menus of Fook Lee and Hap Yick serve both Hakka food and a range of Cantonese favourites. On last checking none have ice cream! Sam A is one of the seven Hakka villages of the Hing Chun Yeuk (or Hing Chun Alliance) the others being Kop Tong, Miu Tsz Lam, Lai Chi Wo, Siu Tan and So Lo Pun to the north, and Ngan Shi Wu on the extension of the Double Haven Country Trail. All are in walking distance, 3-10km return. Most of the villages are in various stages of abandonment! Lai Chi Wo, a walled village, now has a number of museums of Hakka heritage, mangrove viewing area and more importantly places to find sustenance. The walk to Ngan Shi Wu and then to Sai Lau Kong on the Double Haven Country Trail provides stunning views of the area and into Double Haven.

Saturday 7 May will see the last pursuit race of the Top Dog Series, the One Global HKRNVR Memorial Vase. The trophy was presented to the Club in 1950 by officers of the HKRNVR and HKNVF in memory of their comrades who fell in the battle for Hong Kong from 1941 to 1950 with the proviso that “the course should take participating yachts into waters patrolled by the HKRNVR”. The HKRNVR is now defunct but the trophy continues to serve as a reminder of when amateur sailors played their part in the security of Hong Kong. Nowadays the course takes the fleet out through the harbour to the Eastern approaches and back and the HKRNVR Memorial Vase will be presented to the first boat that finishes. Notice of Race and online entry are available from the club’s website.

St. James’s Place Sunset Series Following last year’s record turnout in recent years, the ever-popular summer St. James’s Place Sunset Series will kick off on Friday 10 June. This year 10 races are scheduled throughout the summer months. The series is open to all and is a good excuse to start the weekend early, sailing with friends in a fun and relaxed event followed by prizegiving on the Main Lawn (hopefully). The series is a tactical challenge on when to bag a race to improve your boat’s handicap. The racetrack is in front of the Club which makes it a great experience for spectators if you don’t wish to sail – warning signal is at 1740hrs – see you on 10 June for the first race. Meet RHKYC Outrigger Paddlers Rowing Elena Kuckerenko
he RHKYC outrigger community is made up of pretty great people. Check out these interviews guided by Martina Redaelli for some insight into their world. It’s going to be another awesome season together! Name and years of paddling experience. Elena Kucherenko Started dragon boat paddling in 2016. Started outrigger canoe paddling in 2017. Joined RHKYC DB and OC sections in 2018. Keith Lau 1st year paddling Pietro Scognamiglio Just 1 year of paddling. I am a rookie! Adam Cowperthwaite 1 year of paddling and 20 years as a RHKYC member. I am still trying to work out how it took me so long to pick up a paddle! Amy De Vera 9/10 months (started the development programme since June 2021)
What are the three reasons you like being part of the RHKYC OC section? Elena. For me, the initial reason to join RHKYC OC section was very practical: I wanted to have my dragon boat and outrigger canoe training sessions at the same place. It was only after I joined that I realised what an amazing group of people our OC section is. It is a truly committed group of individuals who make up a strong team together, and who are open to help out and share their knowledge and experience with newer paddlers. I can’t help but be grateful for the support I received from my fellow paddlers, the captains, and the coaches of the OC section. Keith. It’s so well organised! From the training schedule, workout plans, to the race logistics – the captains are putting in an enormous effort into

on my full body mobility and breathing, this helps me relax and get my head in the game. And while waiting for the race to start, all I have to do is close my eyes, think of my Mom and focus again with my breathing. Trust the team and the training, it’s going to be an amazing race no matter what!
I love the teamwork and the camaraderie – there’s no better feeling than being on an OC6 catching the bump, with the whole team’s timing spot on. Hut! It’s an incredible experience! The spirit of competition also runs strongly in all of us. Watching the top paddlers compete at such a high standard inspires all of us to push ourselves a little harder off and on the water. Pietro. It’s a great community of like-minded individuals that they share the amazing value of these sports, everyone is friendly and welcoming to new guys and building some nice friendships was spontaneous. RHKYC has great facilities and unmatched location in Middle Island Great Captains and Coaches, always available and helpful. Adam. The section makes new members feel very welcome; the coaches and experienced paddlers put a lot of effort into helping new paddlers to learn the sport. Tuesday and Thursday morning practice sessions are a great way to start the day with a workout, some time with friends and the sunrise over the water. We train to race, so races allow you to test yourself and the training that you have done together with your team; and the race camaraderie is fantastic. Amy. Diversity, Community and Respect – I admire how the team’s culture supports each other in many ways other than doing together the sport that we all love. There are a lot of great and strong paddlers in RHKYC OC yet they are all so down-to-earth and it is absolutely commendable. What do you do to calm your butterflies while you compete? Elena. I focus on the crew, on our boat, and on the person in front of me. If I’m in seat one and there’s no one in front of me, I still keep my focus on the energy of the boat, but I also try and keep the rhythm in my head to set the pace for the boat.
What’s your main goal for the 2022 upcoming (hopefully) season? Elena. My goal for the 2022 season is learning to read the water on my OC1 to catch, surf, and connect more waves. Keith. As many races as I can get my hands on – including the ATIR! Pietro. Well, considering the situation, my first wish is that we will be able to have a season. Then, my main goal is to attend as many races as possible and improve myself to give the best contribution to the Club. Adam. I want to gain more experience as a steersman. Relatively few OC6 paddlers choose to steer but I enjoy the challenge of controlling the boat while also paddling hard. In small boats I am concentrating on surf-ski this season – it’s not a core sport for the Club, but most of the race events have both OC and surf-ski categories. Amy. My main goal for 2022 is to continuously learn and improve in an OC1 and OC6, beat all my personal records from last year, race and volunteer more. Hopefully later on, gain some confidence to explore how to steer an OC6. What one word describes you and what’s your superpower? Elena. Perseverance. Keith. Determined. My family is my superpower – they are always there for me at the finish line. Pietro. Never, never, never give up! Adam. Repairs. I love building and fixing things – it’s not a superpower, but it’s certainly super-useful in a sport where the boats and equipment need constant maintenance. Amy. “Enthusiastic”, and then use that enthusiasm as my superpower to captivate energy and share it.
Keith. Focus on your boat and block out the noise – everything is down to you, your blade, and the ocean. Pietro. Butterflies? What butterflies? Seriously speaking, as always before a competition I need to find some solo time to get in the zone, look inside myself and try to isolate from all the external world. Trust the training that I put into during the season and just focus on giving my 1000% following the advice of the coaches and the captain. Adam. I picture the finish line and remind myself that the end of the race will always arrive sooner than I think, so once the hooter goes, there’s no time to relax. Amy. I have a pre-race ritual which is a 15-30min stretching to focus Amy De Vera MAY 2022 AHOY! |

hilst Hong Kong has faced a tough fifth wave of Covid-19, some of our members have made the most of their time whilst traveling to paddle at various places around the world. John McLennan shares his experiences of paddling in Hawaii and Dubai whilst Rob Serjeant talks about his time paddling in Singapore and Sydney. John McLennan Hawaii is a week on the borrowed boat from Kamanu. Dealer perk. Unfortunately, it was a week without much wind. A first for me in Hawaii. I still had a chance to paddle at sunrise, saw a few whales with calves and did a bit of surfing with Jack Seymour at the Mokes off of Lanikai beach. It is always magical paddling at this spot. Whilst, Dubai has a vibe all into itself, a core of epic hard-core paddlers forms the Dubai Outrigger Canoe Club, and they are always welcoming whenever I am there. Doug Woodring had a chance to paddle with them during his trip before Christmas. Onshore winds make for launching and coming back in an adventure. The Dubai offshore Sailing club (has reciprocal membership with the Club and super welcoming) have a huge surf ski contingent. I was lucky enough to go out with Doan Weber and her husband Mark (formerly VRC members). Flat water but, just my style in a ski.
No matter where you go in the world that is close to wave, there are usually paddle clubs around and the fraternity of paddlers as some of the most welcoming people you will ever meet. It is a bond through the love of paddling. Rob Serjeant Taking some time away to catch up with family and friends outside of Hong Kong is always a welcome diversion. The short break from training often has a good, energising effect. Sometimes though the time away must be a lot longer – like now. Catching up from years apart, needing a mental health holiday from the Covid malaise. It's good, but it can take a toll on all the hard work and development over the years. Fortunately, the global paddle community has been there to help. First stop Singapore with the Singapore Paddle Club (SPC). RHKYC OC pillars Jeremy and Deane Young who moved there last year helped me get on to a Sunday training session. Social distancing at five in a canoe made it more of a workout in the OC6. Fitness, fun, and a chance to compare notes on technique made for a great bit of experience. Not to mention catching up with the Youngs and see some familiar faces who moved over from HK over the years. Second stop Sydney with the Pacific Dragons club outrigger canoe section. The paddle spirit extends across and beyond our own club.
John with Dubai Outrigger Canoe Club
Not sure yet where our next stop will be after Sydney. Still have a few more things to do and catch up on before returning to HK. Hoping that there will be the chance to connect with other OC clubs along the way. Looking forward to returning to the RHKYC OC section in good form and also enriched from the experience of new programmes, waters, and paddle mates. For your next break from HK consider looking up other clubs along the way, our community is wide and welcoming – and it’s a great chance to learn while possibly seeing familiar faces along the way!

Paddling Around the World
Dubai offshore sailing club
A couple of Victoria Recreation Club (VRC) alumni living in Australia made the connection for me to join in some of the regular sessions. While there are no social distancing provisions I still ended up in crew of 5 in an OC6... this may be a theme for me this trip... and away we go through the Harbour. Fantastic endurance set to get right into the grind. Paddling past the city scape, Sydney Harbour Bridge, and into the inner bays during sunset made for a life memory. Paddling back in the night against the city scape and bridge lights took it up another notch. Will be back out with the crew again this evening when I finish writing this and look forward to a few more sessions down under.

The Importance of Regular Rudder and Steering System Maintenance W O RD S: D E A N BURREL L
t is important that rudders are cycled back and forth on a regular basis and the rudder is dropped once a year for inspection and cleaning. This is especially important on vessels that have roller bearings fitted to the rudder stock. You will see in the images the extent of damage caused when a bearing is left un-serviced. In this case the rollers and sheave had welded themselves together through electrolysis and marine growth. When the boat was used again the rudder tube twisted so much that the fiber glass cracked. Had the bearing sheave not come away from the stock, the rudder tube could have broken out of the hull which may have resulted in the vessel sinking.
Call the Boatyard team on
Covid-19 restrictions, people spending more time abroad and the lack of racing has meant that boats have been left unattended and maintenance schedules have not been followed. With the talk of easing restrictions and the prospect of racing beginning again in April it would be prudent to have your vessel servicing completed early to avoid unnecessary gear failure. Remember that I am available at Shelter Cove on the first Saturday of each month for vessel inspection and/or advice, and at Middle Island by appointment. Call the Boatyard team on 2832 2817 to make an appointment for all your service requirements. The Boatyard team and I look forward to assisting you, and wish you all the best of luck for the up-coming race season.

Hong Kong waters are notorious for marine growth on vessels – this growth loves living in and around your rudder bearing and can create havoc when left unattended.

Sierra Cantabria Wine Dinner Compass Room | Thursday 12 May Bodegas Sierra Cantabria was founded by Guillermo Eguren since the 1870s. It is the family's original winery and comprises a collection of their most classic style Rioja wines. They try to provide somewhat more modernity, leaving the wood in the background and making the fruit and the intensity stand out. Today, the fifth generation of the Eguren family directs all aspects of the winemaking process. The family still prides themselves as viticulturists first and all the grapes are estate grown. In 2011, the Eguren family’s wines are placed at the top of Spanish Wine Guide Gourmets.

RHKYC Diary Planner! We are all looking forward to the day when things will go back to normal. There are so many ways we have had to work together over the past two years to minimise the impact of Covid-19. However, that doesn’t mean we can’t begin to plan for the FUTURE! Below you will find the new RHKYC Diary Planner, just cut around the big square and follow the instructions to be inspired! Just remember that not everything is yet permitted, but it doesn’t hurt to plan ahead!
How to Play Ask a friend to choose an Activity Picture and spell it out loud while opening the Diary Planner back and forth for each letter. When you get to the last letter leave the Diary Planner open. Ask your friend to choose a number that they can see, and open the Diary Planner back and forth that number of times, counting out loud. Finally, ask your friend to choose another number, lift the flap and ask them to tell you their answer.
