Back here at home we had an amazing run of events to mark the 25th Anniversary of the establishment of the HKSAR. All of our watersports were celebrated and showcased; we rolled out the red carpet for the Charity Foundation’s NGO partners, held a beach cleanup and hosted a family fun day. Every aspect of the Club was highlighted, from our core sports to our non-core sports, to our community outreach and our commitment to the environment and sustainability. My great thanks to the 25A Working Group for germinating all of the great ideas and to all member volunteers and staff for running with the ideas and bringing them to such abundant fruition.

Also held over the summer was the St. James’s Place Sunset Series and the Rowing and Paddle Sports Sunset Series. At the time of writing, final results aren’t in so you’ll need to wait for next month’s issue of Ahoy! to find out who walked away with the awards.

Pixie Thomas Pixie had absolutely no plans to come to Hong Kong but luckily for all of us she did... and the rest is history! Pixie joined the Club as a Lady Subscriber in 1981 and very quickly got involved with the San Fernando Race with Vic Locke and has only recently stepped down after 19 years on the Membership Committee. There’s also a great sprinkling of fabulous photographs from Pixie's personal archives.
Welcome back from your summer break and are looking forward to a fantastic 2022-2023 season of sailing, rowing and paddling.
More details to follow in the next Ahoy!

On the rowing side, for the first time ever, the Club colours were represented at the Royal Canadian Henley Masters Regatta in St. Catherine’s, Ontario. In its 138 th year, this is one of the premier rowing regattas in North America. Represented by a mix of current and absent members, the Club raced in several sculling events – including singles and doubles – with the highlight of being a line honours first in the Masters Quad.

We had sailors of all ages making the most of easier travel this summer. We know that some of our younger Sharks sailors competed in events such as Foiling Week in Italy, Opti Worlds in Turkey, the Opti Euros in Denmark, the 29er World Championship in Spain and the SailGP Waszp event in the UK. Then our slightly older (!) sailors were seen at Cork Week and Cowes Week.
See you on the water soon!
We don’t always hear about everyone’s adventures so if we’ve missed any event, tell us about it!

A fascinating interview with Past Commodore David Kong (1996-1998) who was at the helm before and after an important milestone for Hong Kong in 1997. He shares what it was like to steer the Club through those times and of course his experiences in sailing.

Also online is a new boatyard booking form. Please can I encourage members to make use of this form when looking to book in for work in the yard. It quickly captures all your needs and will help speed up and increase the efficiency of arranging work on your vessel.
I hope you all had a most enjoyable summer, despite the fact for those who didn’t travel out of Hong Kong, it being one of the hottest on record! The summer months for the Club were traditionally quieter save for the sailing and rowing versions of the Sunset Series, but this year we had many events on to mark the 25th Anniversary of the Establishment of the HKSAR. My thanks to the members and staff who pulled out all the stop to put on the many events for everyone to enjoy and celebrate this important milestone. In particular it was great to see so many of children from the Club’s Charity Foundation partner organisations being able to share in these experiences too. The day/night dragon boating event at Kellett Island was a first for the Club, but given its popularity, should go on to become a very popular annual event!
The new website is of course where you will find all of the latest information covering sailing, rowing and paddling as well as information on upcoming F&B promotions and events. Do make sure you visit the site often for the latest information as well as keeping an eye on the regular emails, so you don't miss out on anything. Which brings to me touch upon what we have coming up in the next month.

Just before the summer, our new mobile-friendly Club website was launched, and we are very grateful for all the positive feedback we have received. Amongst the new online forms we have, one is for the registration of guest parking and this new addition is making things much smoother for members and much easier for our colleagues on Reception. Please may I take this opportunity to remind members that they must not use guest parking for their own car – even if another member books them in. Club Bye Law 14.1 states “Members who wish to park their vehicle(s) at the Club must apply for a yearly parking label at a fee as determined by General Committee from time to time.” No exception to this Bye Law is permitted. By the time you receive this issue of Ahoy we will have also launched a new online parking label application form.
Last but certainly not least, please join me in welcoming our new Rowing and Paddle Sports Manager, Justin Murray. Besides being a rower in his youth, coxing at Henley for his school, he is also a keen and active paddler. We are sure that Justin will be a great leader for our Rowing and Paddle Sports team and someone who will be able to continue to grow our sports and events and contribute towards achieving the Club’s goals in rowing and paddling. I would also like to take this opportunity to wish the best of luck to Nick Crabb who, after six years in the role, leaves us in the middle of the month to head over to Oregon, to pursue a Sports MBA.
I have been asked to highlight that this month (wine dinners aside!) it is all about health and wellness. Pinnacle relaunches their services on offer with an incumbent fitness team commencing with great value packages for daily group sessions and personal training, throughout the week at Kellett Island. The team will be here to support you in achieving your goals and fitness needs for members of all ages and abilities. See page 32.
We’ve also arranged a Sunrise Yoga session on 10 September, a Cadet HIT for 6 years and over on 10 and 24 September, and a learn to make your own Kombucha Workshop on 3 September.
To round off the month we have an España Wine dinner is on Thursday 22 September, an Oktoberfest Party at Middle Island, a DIY Lantern Making Class for the mid-autumn festival, and a Sipfree Tasting. For all the information you need please see pages 29 to 34.
I look forward to seeing you all at the Club in what promises to be a very busy month indeed.

Almost all the OC clubs in HK (RHKYC, VRC, Lamma, LBC and SLC) participated, making it a great community event and a very fun day. In the OC6 class, RHKYC saw a win in the OC6 Mixed and Women categories, while Lamma got the gold medal in the OC6 Open category. In the small boats, Michelle Lau and Kenniz NG dominated the races in the OC2 craft, Dave Smith brought home a gold in the OC1 Men Masters and Erin Juhl and Martina Redaelli were the winners for OC1 Women Masters and Open respectively. The OC1 Men Open category saw Jason Daborn from Lamma as a winner. People’s smiles are the biggest takeaway of the day, together with some epic hulis and some even more epic huli savings. A big thank you to Nick (Race Director) for all the effort in organising this event and all the volunteers who helped make the event happen and run smoothly throughout the day. Rowing

Sitting in Southampton waiting for wrapping and loading on to the flat rack
fter various delays caused by Covid and “supply chain problems” the two new mark laying boats and the HDPE sampan are complete and are either on board container ships or have arrived in Hong Kong. However, being loaded on board a ship these days does not mean that there are no more delays.
Marine
However due to “Scheduling Issues” the was changed for the CMA CGM Bourgainville with an ETA of the 25th. On the 21st the shipping company decided that the CMA CGM Bourgainville would no longer call at Southampton, as she was late on her schedule and so the NCII was then to be shipped on the CMA CGM Tosca to Rotterdam where she would be transhipped on board the Cosco Belgium. As appears to happen to all ships these days the Tosca was delayed and so would miss the connection to the Cosco Belgium. Ah well never mind, NCII could go on the CSCL Star instead, which at this time was in Pireaus in Greece !
The track of Linah from and to Antwerp as reported on the ships AIS tracker
Happy Shipping.
SEPTEMBER 2022 AHOY! | 23
After being handed over on 30 May the sampan was loaded into a container on 8 June and taken to the port of Rotterdam. The container was booked on board HMM Mir but someone forgot to put the container on the loading plan so the HMM Mir sailed off into the distance leaving the sampan behind. As there is a weekly service the box was due to be loaded on the next ship, the Linah, which was due to arrive in Hong Kong on 7 August. The box was duly picked up on 22 July and off the Linah sailed to her next port of call, Hamburg. It was at this time that the dock workers in Hamburg decided to go on strike and so the Linah anchored off Hamburg waiting to dock. After docking two weeks later the Linah set off for Antwerp where she berthed on 10 July. On 14 July the Linah left Antwerp, sailed down the river Sheldt, went out to sea, turned around and sailed back up the river to Antwerp.
The first mark layer, the Noel Croucher II, left the boatyard on the Isle of White on 6 June and was lifted ashore in Southampton the same day. She was due to be shrink wrapped and loaded on to a flat rack container so that a ship named CMA CGM Benjamin Franklin could pick her up on 22 June. so the Tosca did a little side trip to Antwerp on the way to Rotterdam, possibly she needed more petrol as well, and arrived in Rotterdam on the 14th. A short stay in Rotterdam for the NCII and then on to the CSCL Star to be taken out to Hong Kong. But as said above nothing is easy in shipping and the CSCL Star headed off
The official excuse for this was that the ship did not have enough petrol on board to get to her next stop, Southampton, so had to go back and fill up. Two days later the Linah eventually left and sailed to Southampton. Surprisingly there were no delays or strikes in the UK and the Linah set sail for Suez where she transited on 27 July. We are unreliably advised that the Linah will arrive in HK on 15 August but are not holding our breath.
Members who have had new boats arriving from overseas will be aware that there have been many delays in worldwide shipping causing their boats to arrive well after the scheduled dates in Hong Kong. The Club has fared no better with our new boats.
Finally on 10 July the NCII was loaded on board the CMA CGM Tosca and departed Southampton for Rotterdam to be transhipped. But in shipping nothing is ever straightforward to Hamburg where she sat at anchor, moored beside the sampan on board the Linah for a few days, for 10 days due to, yes you are correct, the dock workers being on strike. At the date of writing this, 28 July, the CSCL Star has just left Hamburg for Zeebrugge, Valencia, Singapore, Xiamen, Nansha and finally Hong Kong, where the ETA is 29 August.
Shipping woes of the Club’s new boats
The second Seaward boat is presently sitting in Southampton waiting for the Brussels Express to pick her up but, surprise, surprise the BE has been sitting at anchor, yes you guessed it, off Humbug, sorry Hamburg, since 22 July and is not due to dock till at least 7 August. And then, to round off the trip the BE will call at Antwerp before heading to Southampton. So, if you see any of the new boats on the course for the Autumn Regatta, on 17 September, it will not be thanks to the shipping companies.

Then, in collaboration with the RHKYC 25A Family Fun Day on 17 July to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the HKSAR, KGS set up a golf pitching game on the water area in front of the Bistro where players were asked to target floating green 50 yards offshore using eco-friendly golf balls. So popular and addictive, many players came back and kept trying to hit the green.

“This must be the only natural sloping coastline left in the central harbour!” – It was a surprised, interested and enthusiastic remark after a compass room lunch that triggered the first dive of “Kellett North”.
Kellett Diving Society will be organizing many more dive outings – both from shore and by boat. Focus will always be on topics like unusual dive sites and marine conservation. We will conduct underwater clean-up dives (with the possibility of obtaining the related PADI specialty rating) as well as dives focussing on the observation and recording of valuable data. Another key area will be exploration –both in Hong Kong, as well as (hopefully soon) abroad. If you are interested and keen to meet a great group of people, get in touch! Keep blowing bubbles, Don, Scuba-Convenor
Of course we had brought all safety and emergency equipment required for any activity that involved breathing compressed air.
Diving Kellett North WORDS AND IMAGES: DON DAY
ellett Diving Society’s first dive strengthened our relationship with Dr. Andy Cornish, programme leader of WWF’s global shark and ray conservation programme (and speaker at the RHKYC as far back as 2013).
Pandemic restrictions delayed the dive, and we wanted to wait for improved visibility (and warmer water temperatures!) in spring. Having picked up tanks early in the morning Andy and I met in the car park and carried tanks, weights, our equipment and underwater camera gear to the little beach on the left hand side of the typhoon shelter wall, just underneath the starter box. We discussed our dive plan, geared up, finished our buddy(safety-) checks and walked into the water. As we descended we followed the boulder shoreline first to the North-West, gradually turning West. Our depth was between 1.8 to 2.6m, and visibility varied between 1 to 3m. We quickly established our procedures as I went ahead with powerful dive torch in one hand, and line connected to surface dive flag in the other, and Andy followed with his professional underwater photography rig. As we got closer to the rocks we moved very slowly, hovering above and carefully inspecting them from all sides and underneath. Andy focussed on taking photos. We came across a pair of fighting crabs, which temporarily suspended hostilities in light of a 1200W light beam, as well as a few species of goby, wrasse and a venomous Wispy waspfish. Damselfishes are typically the most common reef fish here but surprisingly we saw none. Over the sand we encountered more critters, such as dragonets and shrimp gobies. We decided to swim out from the rocks, trying to find anything of interest in the mainly sandy sloping seabed, and to see whether we could approach the bottom of the harbour, much of which is only around 10m depth. Dropping visibility quickly put an end to this mid-dive excursion, and with the help of our compass we headed back to the rock formations. Around the bistro the rock formations change, becoming more irregular and more interesting. We continued all the way to the wall separating the Western Basin, at which point we turned around and slowly headed back. About 50 minutes into our dive we found the highlight – an octopus which had made its home inside a glass bottle. We stayed with it for a few minutes and observed it, while it observed us back with a curious look.
28 | SEPTEMBER 2022 AHOY!
Andy and I (RHKYC Scuba Convenor and Hong Kong Ambassador of leading shark conversation NGO Shark Guardian), had met in January for a lunch and catch-up. While walking back on the balcony, observing the great visibility and sloping rock formation, we decided then and there to dive this site.
While diving the newly-named dive site Kellett North isn’t a world-class destination dive, and certainly does not offer the same in marine life as the many dive sites in Sai Kung do, it still offered a very interesting window into the marine life present in the harbour.
In Andy’s words – “15 or 20 years ago there would have been nothing here. To see the evidence we saw today, is encouraging, and shows how nature is able to heal itself, and come back.” Another very encouraging sign was the lack of vessel debris or trash, especially plastic, on the bottom. We only came across a fairly old can of San Miguel light, a few tyres, and the small bottle aka the octopus habitat. Kellett North is not an easy dive. Visibility can be very low, so you must stay very close to your buddy. Depth on our dive was very shallow, requiring excellent buoyancy control – even more important as any accidental fin contact with the ground results in stirring up sediment, further reducing visibility. Boat traffic in the harbour resulted in constant swell, especially in the shallows. Lastly, the boat traffic itself is a challenge, thus every buddy team should also drag a surface dive flag with them, clearly marking their position.

To my friends and family, those who knew Mum or just knew of Mum, it is my sad duty to tell you that unfortunately she passed away in the morning of 26 July. She was peaceful and we were there to hold her hand as she went. She was a beautiful and adventurous lady and many of you will have lovely memories of her, and her spirit will live on in those memories.

Barbara was asked in the early 90s by Steve Ellis and Vic Locke to become a full time yacht club staff member and run the first China Coast Cup in 1993 and the first Corum Cup in 1994. She then went on to organize the inaugural Vietnam Race in 1996 with Mike Sinfield. These races are still run by the Club today.
Barbara wasn’t often the one at centre of the party – that was usually Kim. But the ones she organized were well known for being pretty spectacular. In fact it is not an exaggeration to say that Barbara’s Mt Gay parties, were the stuff of global legend. Barbara is survived by her beloved husband Kim (known to many members) with whom she has travelled the world for 55 years; her daughters Katherine, Jo and Molly of whom she was very proud; her son-in-law Steve and grandchildren Arielle, Erin, Tara and Jack.
Barbara was always forthcoming with a laugh, a wise word, and a witty comeback. Barbara was not a push-over however she usually managed to bring order with diplomacy or failing that a steely glare that no one wanted to be on the receiving end of. Barbara would be perhaps a bit bemused at the outpouring of love and respect. She certainly wouldn’t want anyone to be sad. She would want us all to pour a large Dark Rum and Diet Coke (her actual favourite drink of choice) and simply remember that life is there to be enjoyed, with a wicked glint in your eye.

Barbara Gudgin, ex Race Manager and Member passed away peacefully in Brisbane Australia on 4 August at the age of 76. Barbara was much loved at the Club and known for her witty, dry sense of humour, her calm demeanour, her wise counsel and for being a mother figure to many of the club’s younger Aftermembers.living in New Zealand, Australia, and Papua New Guinea, Barbara came to Hong Kong with her husband Kim in 1974. Barbara was a successful swim teacher and coach at the United Services Recreation Club teaching hundreds of adults and children to swim and set up the first baby swimming lessons in Hong Kong. In the mid-1980s, despite not being a sailor (and in fact suffering from sea-sickness) Barbara became involved with running the San Fernando races under race chairman Vic Locke. Barbara and the other indomitable ladies would organize the race by phone and Diane May Dagge – 1956-2022

When the Hong Kong shutdown of sport facilities happened, our group of friends from Silver Squads bought private optimists (we could not use the club optimists as they are part of the club facilities) and we started to sail a lot (3-4 times a week) after online schooling as it was the only activity we could do outside of Zoom and school finished early anyway! We became super good friends (Margaux, Tara, Valentina, Cleo, Alix, Jessica, Alix, and the only three boys in the group Lucien aka Lulu,Rohan and Justin – and many others we lent our boats to). We loved our time on the water together (including the lunch breaks with parents on Shoe Island!). When things reopened, we registered to the HHYC Open Dinghy Regatta and to our surprise, our group won the top 5 places in the greenfleet despite the big sleepover we did in Shelter Cove on parents big boats (=lack of sleep / don’t tell them!)! It was a great event for our first regatta ever and we all very much supported each other. We are now very keen to sail and compete more together! Some of us even went to Lake Garda and Saint Tropez together to train this summer. Maybe the one positive of this environment: it gave us the “virus” of competitive and fun opti racing! Down: 1. 40 | SEPTEMBER 2022 AHOY! OnlyKids Reverse Fishing!
This boat was fishing illegally in Malaysia using dynamite! The coastguard caught the fishing boat and our members Sam Cooke and Bram van Olphen were heavily involved in sinking it! Usually vessels like this are just left at an anchorage to rust, rot and pollute, but they cleaned the boat and then sank it off Lankayan Island. Instead of fishing, it will now become the home of one of our ocean’s most showstopping fish, the fabulous Bumphead Parrotfish. Their namesake comes from their bird-like beak that helps them eat their favourite food, dead corals and rocks. These animals eat so much coral on a daily basis that they also produce a very large amount of faeces. Parrotfish faeces play an important role in the maintenance of healthy coral reef habitats, replenishing nutrients while simultaneously keeping algae growth in check.
