THE LOCATION Situated on a plot of land at the hip of mount Bokor, right beside Bokor Nature Reserved road, with a panoramic view of Kep beach and the surrounding nature. THE RESIDENCE Catered toward a family of generous income with ameninties such as: swimming pool and mini-bars with a view of the beach and an open living room that overlook the hillside. Bedrooms are kept separated from each other to increase a sense of privacy.

THE HOLIDAY HOME Located on St. 369 off the shore of Bassac river, this holiday home has an area of less than 150m2. The practical shape of the floorplan is to maximize air intake from the north-east and north-west while also opening up the bedroom and dinning area to the panoramic view of the river.

THE LOCATION Chbar Ompov is one of the most crowded place in Phnom Penh due to the market, the bridge and the bus station. With the increase of vehicle usage, traffic becomes increasingly worse and the air is filled with smoke.

THESIS PROJECT

CENTER FOR TOURISM MANAGEMENT & RESEARCH OF KRATIE

Kratie locates in the north of Cambodia, bordering Kompong Cham, Tbong Khmum, Steung Treng, Mondulkiri and Vietnam. There are 6 districts in Kratie: Chhloung, Kracheh, Praek Prasab, Sambor, Snoul and Chet Bori. The Mekong River in this province is one of the habitats to fresh water dolphin in South East Asia.

THE PEOPLE

THE DIFFICULTIES Lack of information despite the numerous tourist destinations. Insufficient tourist facilities and services. THE GOAL Increase tourism awareness and develop the local economy. THE INTENTION Facilitate tourism through the creations of appropriate services. Encourage interactions between tourism and locality.

THE HOUSING

The people of selected site are predominantly farmers and fisherman. The minimum daily income is $1.

COMMUNITY-TOURISM MARKET THE PURPOSE: The purpose of this community market is to encourage interactions between the local community with growing tourists population to induce cultural and socio-economics exchange as well as encourage local economic growth and provide jobs for the people.

THE CONCEPTUAL IDEA

Cantor’s Giant Soft Shell Turtle, scientific name: Pelochelys cantorii,

is native to South East Asia. It was thought to be extinct, however a study of the Mekong River in Steung Treng reveals that this specie still live in the great river. This lost and rediscovery is a reminder to persevere despite the oncoming torrent of tourist and preserve the local culture and identity.


THE SERVICES: 1. Canteen: to facilitates tourists who journey between Kratie and Steung Treng. 2. Community-tourism market: a space where the locals and tourists can interact and immerse in a cultural exchange through the economics process of buying and selling. 3. Covered market: a flexible indoor space where money can exchange hands in the local community AND also function as a public space where community’s celebration can take place.
