INTRODUCTION Over the years, tourism has become one of Cambodia’s main source of welfare, being second only
to the agriculture sector when it comes to the amelioration of the country’s socio-economic standing. It is a way of boosting cultural and historical values by spotlighting national identity to international tourists and
opening up the nation to international influences and diversification of knowledge. Most importantly, tourism is a sustainable industry that is hugely involved in the betterment of the local community through the generation of income and creation of jobs.
PROBLEMS & RESPONSES There is an abundant of tourist destinations in Cambodia however, the lack of information and
advertisement plunges many of the available destinations into obscurity. Furthermore, the lack of accommodations and tourism services also discourage tourists from visiting and exploring each attraction for all
its worth. Kratie is one such overlooked destination. It is a province that is brimming with natural resources from the Mekong river and its surrounding mountainous area, a home of many endangered species and breathtaking sceneries. It is also a land that is teeming with rich culture through deep-rooted history that
presents an endless potential for tourism development. Despite possessing the latent qualities to become one of Cambodia’s top tourist destination, the government is still hesitant about tourism development in Kratie. There is no interest in the planning or progression of the province’s existing attractions.
In order to bring awareness to the tourism potential in Kratie, this thesis propose a project that
is aimed toward the management, research and development of tourist destinations of Kratie through the
creation of the Center for Tourism Management and Research of Kratie. This primary goal of this center is to facilitates the journey of tourists by providing accommodation on the site, creating a central but small scale tourist port along the river of the site to ease transportation across the Mekong as well as providing catering
services through restaurant and canteen. A central office will be created to house the management and research and development of tourist destinations and encourage cooperations between the government and
existing NGOs that are interested in the preservation of culture and wild life in the province. Furthermore, an exhibition hall and library will be created to inform the public of the attractions in Kratie as well as spread
news of them. The center will also encourage interactions between the local community and national and international tourists through the community-tourism market. It will also serve as a public space for the local
community, where the population can gather to celebrate, while taking an active role in the development of the area's socio-economic situations.
METHODOLOGY In order to achieve maximum efficiency for the project, the first step is to accumulate necessary
data on tourism, economics, population and tourist destinations through meetings with ministries and interviews with the locals. The second step is to choose an appropriate site after thorough analysis of accrued
data. The third step is the development of the masterplan of the project through the consultations with the
advisors. The fourth and final step is the concept development of the individual projects and its subsequent design and planning.
