It’s show time and I look forward to meeting you!

It’s late April – and that means it’s LLHA Showtime! I can’t tell you how excited I am to finally put a face to many of you and to learn more about what’s happening in your businesses. I also can’t wait to see all of your fantastic new offerings, that until now have only been attractive images in TGF&A! In our cover story, we have asked “when is it time to revamp and refresh your store?”, as we focus on retail store makeovers. Interior designers who specialize in retail design have offered their ideas, insights and how to accomplish the most with the budget you have.

For business content, we have another informative piece about inventory management and keeping that fine balance in your business. Written by retail consultant Rena Granofsky, I am sure you will find some terrific insights on how to manage retail’s largest controllable expense.

Kevin Graff, another popular retail expert and strategist, offers his thoughts on staying competitive and standing out from the retail crowd. Through his no-nonsense approach, he has valuable, common sense advice to help increase your sales and profitability.

When it comes to the latest in fashion and travel accessories, we have spotlighted some terrific exhibitor products that are sure to be in demand this year. When I first took over LLHA, it was just months after the show’s 20th milestone. How time flies. I am delighted to see the results of our latest edition – with a new layout and décor, new show features and events, 20% more booths including 32 exhibitors not with us in 2009, and a great new vehicle like TGF&A to help us spread the word, I’d say it was worth the wait!

Speaking of TGF&A, this marks our 4th issue and our largest to date. Thank you very much to our Editorial Advisory Board and all the industry suppliers and retailers who contibuted their time, content, images and ads, as well as praise or constructive criticism as we launched and grew this publication. Stay tuned, as we continue to build TGF&A with new features and departments, a larger circulation, a dedicated TGF&A website, e-newsletters, and other opportunities to keep you informed and help you grow your business.

Travel Meets Fashion this Spring

Consumers are spending more wisely these days when it comes to luggage and travel accessories. High on the list of demands are eco-friendly, attractive and lightweight pieces at a good price — all of which suppliers are jumping to provide.

Versatile and convertible packs are popular in Techstyle International’s offerings.

“We are seeing demand for many products that are now being made from 100 percent recycled polyester,” says Al Diem, vice president, Techstyle International. “In the new products from Kiva and Rick Steves, there is an emphasis on small convertible packs, totes and slings that can replace paper and plastic counterparts, so they can be re-used over and over again.

In addition to bright colours and prints, there is also a growing trend in marketing luggage towards women, like Accessory Network’s Susan G. Komen for the Cure Breast Cancer Awareness line.

Customers are also placing more emphasis on quality and design and want to purchase the best luggage they can at the very best price. For suppliers, this means greater pressure on the Canadian market to be price competitive with the U.S. “With the loonie nearly at par with the U.S. dollar, and increasing consumer opportunities to purchase online from U.S. retailers, it’s essential for Canadian su p p li e r s to h ave w e ll - p r i c e d a n d innovative products to offer,” says Diem.

Bold Statements When striving to achieve the right look, the motto this year is “everything goes” with colours and prints leading the way.

“Pop culture and high fashion have definitely affected this trend as what is worn on the runway translates to celebrities and then to mass-market product,” explains Colette Krahenbuhl, director of marketing and public relations for Accessory Network Group.

This Werks Hardside piece from Throat Threads reveals a return to classic colours but stays current with a twist of modern design.

And with the seemingly zillions of choices, the industry must continually stay on top of what’s hot to develop fashionable products that meet the demands of not just the youthful market, but all age ranges.

Consumers are increasingly savvy and knowledgeable thanks to the Internet and social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and MySpace, which has allowed people worldwide to share travel knowledge and information about where to go, what to pack, what to wear and what to use.

Though whimsical colours are the rage, there is also a return to classic colours, such as red, says Anita Gatto, new business development and communications manager for Throat Threads and its Victorinox line.

“We love our fun colours, but there is still that consumer who is attracted to the classic red or black. With Victorinox, we have new innovative styles that have the classic colour, but with a twist of modern design, like our Werks Hardside in red. It’s brilliant looking and will transcend into many season trends to come.”

Briggs & Riley is re-launching their popular Transcend Collection, with restyled bags set to hit the market July 10th.

Goodbye Heavy Luggage A big trend today is luggage that is weight-reduced as travelers strive to master the art of packing and traveling light. Accessory Network is one of many companies helping to supply this demand with its LeSportsac luggage collection.

“The 21-inch upright wheeled backpack and travel tote are still the best sellers for our brands,” says Krahenbuhl. “These items offer versatility for the customer as they can be used for recreational travel, business travel or everyday use.

Briggs & Riley recently re-launched its Transcend collection, which caters to the active leisure traveler. The company offers 12 redesigned styles, including cabin bags, carry on and largewheeled uprights and duffles, which boast a 10 to 15% reduction in weight.

“Traveling should be about the experience of process,” says Jim Lahren, vice president of marketing for Briggs & Riley. “We give sophisticated travelers the solutions they need to transition stressfree from one destination to the next.”

“With airlines charging up to $125 for a bag weighing just one pound over the limit, travelers cannot afford to not own a luggage scale.”

Scales and Clips If you’re unsure just how heavy your fully packed luggage is, check out one of the hottest-selling accessories in the travel goods market place today—the portable luggage scale.

With the most popular accessories being purses, fashion bags, statement bags, necklaces and bracelets, Christian Badaan of Lemon Lime, Inc. says women today understand how important it is to complete their outfit. For those customers looking to make a statement, Badaan stresses the importance of suppliers looking outside the box and avoiding a focus on quantities and low pricing.

“Instead, bring quality, design, variety and especially exclusivity,” he suggests.

Of course, popular culture will continue to dictate what is in and what is not, but most customers will remain steadfastly value conscious. After all, unlike their favourite celebrity, it’s important to be able to use an accessory on more than one occasion.

“I believe the economic climate has

impacted all businesses, even more so with the accessory business,” says Stella Chan, sales associate with Lapuika, Inc. “We have had to find creative ways to make our products fashionable, but also functional. In these times, it’s about finding the right accessory that will match both your day and night outfit.”

Gaya’s creative director Wei Wei Chang says that in the current economy, consumers are remaining more cautious with their purchasing decisions.

“We have always strived to provide affordable designer handbags,” she explains. “Even more so now than before, we make sure our designs are fashionable, but still meet the budgets of today’s consumer. This season, we are incorporating more minimalist designs, which tend to give people the feeling that things are lighter, simpler and more relaxed. Perhaps this style is suited to stressful times like these.”

“In these times, it’s about finding the right accessory that will match both your day and night outfit.”

This season Gaya has gone minimalist, giving consumers a more relaxed, lighter, and less stressed ambiance .

Anastasia Tsotroudis of CBM Inc./ Meade Ray says the economic effect on offshore business has had a definite impact on their business. “Less expensive materials need to be constantly sourced so that requested price points can be met.

Consumers are becoming more material and price-savvy and are asking for higher quality for the value of the product.”

Huge this season are cross body bags, as demand increases for bags that allow for more hands-free movement.

Julien Morichon, brand manager for L a n d au S a c a m oto, re m a r ks, “ T h e Hedgren Inner City collection of cross body bags and slings responds very well to this consumer demand. It provides stylish, well-organized, practical and important lightweight bags. The clean, simple styling works as well in the city, as it does at night or on vacation.”

Umbrellas Make a Splash W h il e m a ny m ay t h in k t h at t rave l accessories primarily include luggage and handbags, they would be sorely missing out if they didn’t investigate what’s new in the world of umbrellas.

When it comes to the latest looks, Richard Igra, president of Fulton Umbrellas (Canada) Ltd., says we are seeing a retro trend with a lot of black and white classical designs. “One of our more successful umbrellas is the Birdcage™, see-through domed umbrella that earned us a Royal Warrant from the Queen,” says Igra. “It was created by Fulton in the 1960s Twiggy era and continues to be very popular for all ages.”

Landau Sacamoto’s Hedgren brand includes a hands-free line for both women and men that are essentially messenger bags loaded with pockets and organized compartments.

The Olympics provided a golden moment for Auclair to showcase its gloves.

Hand in hand with umbrellas are, of course, gloves.

Few Canadian companies know more about gloves than Paris Glove of Canada.

Joan Monk designs and handles merchandise for Paris Glove and Auclair (another glove company with a stellar reputation). She says the latest looks include plenty of glitz, metallic colors and longer lengths.

“But consumers are looking for value and price. They remember brands that make sense and look for iconic brands that have a reputation for being famous at what they do.”

The Olympics provided a wonderful opportunity for Auclair and Paris Glove, both of which have been making gloves for more than 60 years.

“People watched to see what the athletes were wearing and this has created a large goodwill for the brand. White is the now the most demanded colour because the Olympic athletes mostly wore white gloves.”

Lately, consumers are purchasing a lot more accessories than apparel – accessories like this LE SAC bag from Ro-el.

The Future As for what the next few years will look like, Josie Fragapane of the Ro-el Group sums it up succinctly. “The accessory business has and will always be a huge trend. Many consumers lately are purchasing a lot more accessories than they do apparel. They would rather keep their main wardrobe, perhaps add a few items every month or so, and buy a different style and colored purse to accessorize their already existing look. Consumers are never affected beyond their shopping capabilities. Is it Time for a Retail Makeover?

Retail environments are not exempt; change needs to be embraced. Design and an approach to merchandising require periodic fine-tuning with an eye to ensuring that the right message about your product reaches your customers.

To every season…

Joe Pettipas, a senior vice-president and director of retail with HOK, a global-based multi-sector design firm, says that a retail store’s freshness and shelf-life has become considerably shorter. What used to be five to seven years has slowly started to change during the last decade, according to Pettipas.

“It’s now three to five years. Part of the reason for that is because not only are we as consumers becoming more aware and more

A good design firm will also bring what he calls “the comparables”. Information can be pulled from all over the world—retailers in China or Europe—to support retailers in North America .

“My own credo is that you should expect that the design firm can bring you value for the money you are spending.

That is, the outcome will be commensurate to what you’ve spent.”

For David Milne, president and creative director of DMD Retail Design, there’s no magic—especially if retailers know who they are.

“First off, design firms would like to know if clients can clearly identify what their needs are, and do a cold and calculated assessment of their internal capabilities. A reputable design firm will be able to get to the point—and the result—that much more quickly and efficiently.”

globally savvy, but in many ways we are more technologically savvy too. And also, our sensory inputs crave more.”

It’s a timeframe that David Milne, president and creative director of DMD Retail Design, can generally agree with.

“From a life-cycle perspective, short of being clairvoyant, sometimes you just don’t know and have to build in flexibility for the future.

Typically, you have an arbitrary five-year window. What we’ve done with some of our clients, is to give them an underlying skeleton that can be refaced. That extends the life of the store to about 10 years.”

Recognize who your customers are

Pick up the technology-savvy thread for a moment: Pettipas points out that street-line retail is competing heavily with online media retail— retail that can be captured under the general term “E-commerce.”

Electronic commerce and marketing refers to selling and buying ser vices, products and information by means of electronic systems and computer networks.

It is no surprise, Pettipas again points out, that vir tual retail trade has grown exponentially in a very short duration of time. That fact demands a retail store owner’s attention.

Given that a consumer is more techsavvy and more likely to invest themselves in E-commerce methods of buying goods and ser vices, the best retailers have adjusted quickly and responded in some fashion, Pettipas notes.

Yet, the response to reaching out to Internet-savvy customers is paradoxically old-school. It is a tried and true method: stop, shut off the computer, take a step back, and simply think about who your customers are.

The best money in any makeover design is spent when retailers recognize who their customers are and target their environment and space toward them.

Keep it Simple In any makeover, Pettipas says that virtually the whole environment of your store should be thought of as a “display” and be given suitable attention to detail. Yet, in a seemingly contradictory way, both he and Milne counsel going to some length to not over do it: keep it simple.

“Features, benefits, values: it needs to be focused. You can’t have a million different things going on and expect the consumer to be focused. Be targeted and be direct. Even with simple counter-top, point-of-purchase displays,” Milne adds.

“My overriding advice would be to strive to keep it simple. Keep it clear and don’t clutter. A display should imply more than just stuff on shelves. It’s how you punctuate those items with a feature or something that breaks the norm of stuffon-shelves. With windows, be sensitive to who sees them and how they see them: is it pedestrian or vehicular traffic?

“Ask what your brand values are. What do you stand for? The materials and how you articulate your display should be consistent with your brand character.”

“If you are selling a particular product to a particular demographic,” says Pettipas, “you used to be able to respond to a socio-economic demographic. Now it is further layered with a life-style and mindset demographic.”

When it comes to defining the term branding, Milne doesn’t believe there is an easy response when you think about the differences between branding a hardware store and a jewelry store.

“There’s no recipe. It really depends on the kind of retailer, and on designing a store that is appropriate for and consistent with the brand.

Successful retailers pick a key component and use that strategically,” Milne says.

It comes down to branding being an

understanding of who you are, what your product is and toward whom it is being targeted—“the optimum end-user, if you will,” says Pettipas.

Just as important is what expectations those users have of the product or service.

That understanding has to come first because w hat c o m e s late r m i g ht b e e ntire l y serendipitous.

Particular athletic shoe brands have a good understanding of what they are and who they attract—those wanting and engaging in an active lifestyle. They have a purely functional perspective in their branding. Then, some societal phenomenon happens, perhaps quite unintended, and the brand evolves because of its flexibility.

“The shoes are for active people, or those who want to be perceived as active, and all of a sudden it becomes a fashion brand. You start out in one direction and might end up in another,” Pettipas says.

The upshot is that whatever re-working of your environment you undertake, it is essential to understand how that environment will support your brand and further its penetration within your targeted marketplace.

T he key for Pet tipas and Milne is recognition—understanding the massive amounts of stimuli with which consumers are confronted is vital in seeing through any sort of retail makeover.

“Given how much people are bombarded with stuff, from when you wake up until you g o to b e d, w i t h a ll t h e i m a g e s a n d messages that struggle for your attention, I think retailers have to simplify and bring a bit of calm,” Milne says.

Find the Cutting Edge

Sustainability is becoming mainstream, but it has been slow given the financial “programming” of how retailing works with rents and leases, notes Pettipas.

Yet, more than ever, consumers expect responsibility and good citizenry in their retailers, and it goes beyond recycling and packaging.

“It doesn’t hurt to be able to describe what your processes are toward being re s p o n s i b l e. N o o n e’s l o st b u s i n e s s because they are green,” Pettipas says.

He stresses responsibility—and responding to a marketplace which is expecting you to evolve in a quick cycle.

That doesn’t mean needing to create a new retail environment every three years, but Pettipas advises that flexibility can be responsible.

“You have to develop space with some reasonable flexibility, so you can meet changes and undertake a new approach without having to shut the shop down for a few weeks. It’s not responsible to rip everything up and throw it out.”

Furthermore, where it wasn’t a concern just two years ago, new energy codes will make lighting changes necessary, rather than just socially responsible. Businesses are trying to be more LEED (Leadership in E n e r g y a n d E n v i r o n m e n t a l D e s i g n) responsive, indicates Milne.

“The technology that is coming on board now didn’t exist a couple of years ago. In principle, everyone is trying to do the right thing. Up until recently, anything perceived as ecological came at a premium price. I think things are converging and more people are

The biggest detriment to your growth is a lack of compliance on basic store standards. You Start Running Your know, things like merchandising standards, Store Right! housekeeping standards, dress code standards, service standards and selling standards. There is just one right way to run your store on a day to day basis. Figure out what that is, communicate it to everyone on your team, and insist that it runs that way today, tomorrow and every day. Most every retail business that failed had no idea how to maintain standards in their stores. As a result, their brand was tarnished. Customers learned that they couldn’t count on the store and stopped shopping there. Don’t make that mistake. When you finally begin to run your store the right way, your customers will shop with you more often.

Inventor y represents your single biggest investment and area for improvement. Do you have a POS system? Do you have a 6-month merchandise plan? Do you maintain an Open-to-Buy budget? Do you have a markdown strategy ? Do you have planned inventory levels for each month? If you answered “No” to any of these questions, you’re leaving both sales and margin on the table every day.

Understand that the majority of the gains made in retail have been in the area of inventory control. You can realistically add 2 to 4% to your gross margin and improve your cash flow dramatically by taking control of your inventory. Take the time to talk to your accountant, or do some research on the internet, to find inventory tools that will allow you to grow both sales and profits.

Sounds crazy, right? Certainly you can’t raise every price in your store. But, be smart about it. Begin by looking for prices you can round up. For example, moving an item from $9.69 to $9.99 takes your Gross Margin from 40% to 42%. Moving from $52.99 to $54.99 gets you the same increase of 2% in Gross Margin. And, you probably won’t sell any fewer items. The reality is that most items sold are not exceptionally price sensitive. Look around your store and you’ll discover that you can probably raise a lot of prices without losing sales, and in the process make a lot more money.

In-store events and sales Stay on top of the game and stand above the competition by marketing your products through special in-store events and unique sales opportunities.

Collect contacts Collecting address and email contacts makes smart business sense. Promise them that you won’t release their personal information, then send them monthly or seasonal reminders about your new products and store news. Have you opened up another location? Tell them. Have you brought in a new product line? Tell them. Have any pre-season sales planned? Tell them.

Bonus Tips:

Use social media Create a Facebook page and collect fans and friends who all love what you have to offer. Have someone on your staff devoted to developing contacts and sending out regular updates. A few minutes each day is all the time you need to market to a very large client base. Send a fun message and stay on peoples’ radars.

Develop an e-News Along with collecting emails, write a monthly e-newsletter about what’s new in your store. It needn’t be an epic like War and Peace – but a short, fun update about what’s happening. Have you renovated? Moved products around? Hired new staff? Share your news and remind people who and where you are.

Have an in-store draw We’ve all dropped our business card into a bowl or a box, hoping to have a call saying we’ve won.

Hold your own draw and offer what you can: $100 off, a 25% discount on your next purchase, a complimentary wallet with a new handbag, or something else. People love to win.

Nurture loyalty For those regulars who are frequent shoppers, nurture their loyalty and throw in something to the deal the next time they are at your cash register. Offer them a waterproof spray, a luggage tag, a passport holder – any small token to say that you appreciate their business. People remember small acts of kindness.

Download special promotions from your website Draw traffic to your website and have a coupon or a promotion that anyone can easily download.

Again, you don’t need to offer the moon but 10% off or saving the tax can do wonders to get people in your store and buying. People love to think they are getting a special deal and will remember your store.

Have a pre-launch party You don’t need to wait until the holidays to have a reason to party. An invitation to a special “after hours bash” to check out a new collection, can make buyers think they are exclusive and privileged.

A wine and cheese cocktail reception and perusing the latest wares is very glam – and your patrons will think they are hobnobbing like celebrities.

Think green Offer the opportunity to recycle or upcycle their old products. Bring in your old suitcase and get $20 off a new one, or donate your old, worn handbag and save on your next purchase. People want to embrace a greener lifestyle but they just might need a little incentive along the way.

Growing is one thing, staying competitive is yet another!

The day of the generalist has faded. Retailers today must continually dominate the market in at least one (and normally two) of these areas: Product: Best selection, highest quality or most unique. Think Home Depot or Prada stores.

Price: Usually the lowest. Think Costco, Walmart or No Frills.

Convenience: Hours, location or one-stop shopping. Think of corner stores, pharmacies or big box stores that offer one-stop shopping.

Customer Experience: Store design, special events, staff performance, ‘surprise’ factor. Look at Bass Pro Shops and Lululemon.

So, when you look at your store concept through your customer’s eyes, what are you known for? What do you ‘own’ in their minds?

We always say that the last thing the world needs is another gift store, luggage shop or accessory store. What we need is one that amazes us; that brings to customers a concept that has never been done quite like it before. If you want to stay competitive, start to become more of a specialist. Carve out a place of strength in your

marketplace that no other retailer can match. When you do, you’ll have created a store concept that is here for a long, long time.

Remember that sustained, long-term growth requires innovation.

Customers are always looking for something new, improved, different, exciting, unique, special and targeted at them. What they don’t want is something old, tired, boring, stuffy or ‘one size fits all’.

And they certainly don’t want to see the same merchandise or approach that everyone else is pushing out there. The bottom line is …if you’re not evolving, you’re probably dying!

What can you do about this? Start by re-evaluating your position on a regular basis. Then add, delete or ‘tweak’ something … every time! Stay focused on remaining fresh, current and vibrant.

There’s No Business Like Post-Show Business

TGF & A recently asked three industry professionals with trade show experience under their belts to share some of their tips for following-up and standing out from the crowd. Mark Golfman, president of Cabrelli, Sandra Cassivi, sales & marketing at OutSourceAim Imports and Fred Fitzhugh, vp of sales with Holiday, have some great hints to share.

How many trade shows would you average a year?

Mark Golfman: Between all the regional shows and LLHA, Cabrelli attends about 35 shows per year.

Sandra Cassivi: 3 major trade shows in Toronto and two local shows in the province of Quebec.

Fred Fitzhugh: Around 15 per year.

Why are trade shows so integral to your success?

MG: The opportunity for launching new brands, presenting new products and meeting customers from across the country are all key components. Just as importantly, trade shows give us, and the customers, the opportunity to work together without outside distractions. Customers can focus on the job of buying and merchandising their product mix for their stores without being pulled by their normal day to day routines.

SC: It is a great opportunity to meet both old and new clients face to face. You can show off all your products at one time to a large variety of clients from across the country. This is difficult to achieve from your head office if you do not have sales agents nation-wide. It also aids in promoting your business and getting your name known.

FF: It’s a great chance to connect live with buyers and suppliers, and to present our latest products and innovations.

There is nothing like talking to a person face-to-face!

What is your strategy for effective follow ups after a trade show? Do you prefer email or phone follow up techniques?

Which has proved more successful?

MG: All strategies are necessary to be successful. In most 24 Travel Goods, Fashion & Accessories Magazine

cases, the customer will let you know if they prefer to communicate by e-mail, phone or even face-to-face.

SC: I cannot stress how crucial it is to work your booth – this is no time for breaks; you pay good money to be at the show so work it to your fullest capacity! We recommend that you try to speak with everyone who visits your booth and ask them for their business card; if they have none left, then write it down on a note pad. Anyone who enters your booth space is a potential client; if you get their contact information you have the opportunity for an important follow-up later.

FF: A phone follow-up is always the best combined with an email recapping the conversation and outlining future steps.

How can you make an experience or a connection memorable?

MG: Every customer is different. At trade shows, some people like a lot of attention, while others like to be left alone to browse. At Cabrelli, we want to ensure that any experience with our company is a positive one. We don't believe our customer likes an aggressive, hard-sell approach. It's important to be able to live up to your sales pitch, so we are always upfront and honest about what we can and cannot do.

SC: It is extremely important to be passionate about your business; if you are excited about your product your client will be to! You must be able to find a connection with your client – small chat is always great to break the ice! Ask them where they are from, how long they have been in business, and for their opinions. Clients greatly appreciate if you are interested

to hear their feedback on your product – it is important to listen to them as they are the ones selling to the end user.

FF: It is essential to take the time to ask questions in order to understand what customers are looking for. We first need to understand their needs, their market, their customers, their business environment. Once we know this, we can direct them to the appropriate product line and talk about how our product best fits their needs.

How long do you typically wait to follow up? How long is too long? Is there an ideal time frame?

MG: Again, each customer is unique, but at the same time, each brand or product line may have its own plan to follow, especially with overseas production. It's in everyone's interest to communicate openly about time frames and deadlines.

SC: We recommend making contact 1 week after the show if possible – email is becoming the most popular avenue. However, there are clients who do not have email – then a call about 2 weeks after is acceptable. It is important to always ask the person’s permission to call or email them. Always be polite; if they do not want to give you their card or coordinates, then do not push them – chances are they are not the right client for your product line.

FF: 2 to 3 business days is a good time frame.This leaves sufficient time for customers to come back to their office and catch-up on emails and voice mails or other emergencies while they were away.

EVOLUTION OF LUGGAGE Introducing a new type of carry-on

Do you offer any promotional materials (brochures, postcards, samples etc.) at your booth? What has worked for you? Are they helpful for post-show business?

MG: Cabrelli is more than a production house. We are a marketing and distribution company for national brand fashion handbags and accessories. We always try to leave a customer with a positive reminder of one of our brands, from a basic tote bag to a bottle of water. But in the end, it is the product, value and service you offer that makes the sale, not the token give-away.

SC: Yes, we have used postcards and business cards. You need to be sure to include all your company’s coordinates such as email address, website, telephone and fax, to make it easy for customers to reach you later. It is important to not judge the trade show by the amount of orders you have written at the show itself. Why? We have often had many clients contact us and place orders after a trade show – some even six months later. Also, you cannot judge the success of a tradeshow after only attending once. We recommend exhibiting a minimum of three times to make a proper assessment – this gives the clients an opportunity to see you again and again and it increases their confidence that you are serious and not a fly-by-night operation.

FF: Yes. We offer brochures and sales sheets of our various product lines, which outline product benefits. It is essential to give these out as customers cannot absorb all the product information that is verbally given at a show.

How do you make your product line memorable so it stands out from others long after the trade show is over?

MG: Be different, don't be afraid to try new things, and believe in your brand.

SC: Your product line will fulfill some need in the market – find out what yours is and sell it! Don’t be afraid to brag about what makes your product line great! Never put down your competitors who may be selling a similar product line – this can be viewed as unprofessional and can turn off many clients, and you may lose their respect. If you concentrate on the positive aspects of what your product line offers, then this will leave a memorable impression rather than a bad one.

FF: It all begins at the show. When presenting our products we need to be passionate and we need to truly believe our products can satisfy our clients’ needs. It’s all about win-win. If you do this then you stand out long after! e

President's Message The wait is over and the 2010 LLHA Show is upon us! I anticipate one of our best shows ever! We have many new features this year highlighted by the Pearl Lounge and New Product Showcase. Another positive change is moving the President’s Reception to Sunday evening to allow those attendees who don’t arrive until Sunday the opportunity to join us. I would like to thank the show committee, with special thanks to Gail Grant and Catherine Genge and to Richard Swayze of MediaEDGE for their tireless efforts in preparing for this year’s show.

We have experienced a marked improvement in our industry starting with the final quarter of 2009. Thankfully this has continued into 2010, although with the good comes some bad. Supply and Demand! As business continues to improve, it will take some time for suppliers to catch up to the greater demand. Product and freight costs from the source will also increase as factories take advantage of the increase in demand to command higher prices. Freight is a large component of the cost of our goods in Canada and the re-introduction of the “surcharge” has begun in earnest. Thankfully the climb of the Canadian dollar has helped suppliers in the short term to deal with this challenge.

As for the LLHA Show, your board is very excited to have many of those who were not at last year’s show back exhibiting with us this year. The LLHA Show offers retailers the only opportunity to shop for all aspects of our industry under one roof. It is also the venue for suppliers to reach out to the key decision makers at retail. This year’s show has many enhancements to make the experience a positive one for all. We have a new and larger layout, new “Pearl” Lounge, New Product Showcase, a new guest speaker Marshal Cohen and a new date for our social event. I am sure that this, the 30th edition of the LLHA Show, will be the best ever!

I want to also invite all members of the association to our AGM which will be held on Saturday April 24th at the Toronto Congress Centre at 4:30 pm following set up. We invite members to come at 4 pm for refreshments at a welcome reception prior to the start of the meeting.

So What are People Buying?

Did you know that the top 5 fashion accessories Canadians purchased in October, November and December were earrings, handbags, chains/necklaces, wallets and watches? Canadians are buying fashion accessories - and lots of them!

Not surprisingly, the new Accessories Tracker from The NPD Group, shows knit gloves, mittens and cold weather hats at the top of the list of accessory purchases as Canadians geared up for a cold, blustery winter season. However, it wasn’t all about utility items as almost half of Canadians who purchased an accessory in the last quarter of 2009 purchased at least one piece of jewellery.

NPD’s Accessories Tracker mails to approximately 10,000 Canadians each month and the results are representative of accessory purchases both nationally and regionally. The service

Developments in safety are emerging as a new technology, as consumers look for more safety features in the products they buy.

From Colombian Leather House’s Queros Collection, the products are all hand-made and not mass-produced so there is less waste.

One of the benefits that technology has provided to travelers is security. If the new global reality was graphically launched by the events of 911, then no two words now go together with more impact then “airport” and “security”.

Even at a much less serious level, having secure luggage is a growing requirement for many people. Ivan Lam of Samboro Luggage illustrates how most travellers are unaware of how easily a thief can break into luggage without even touching the lock.

“Most zippers on a suitcase can be broken open just by using a sharp object such as a ball-point pen,” says Lam. “After breaking in, thieves close the suitcase again simply by pulling the zipper slider over the opening. It would appear as if nothing has happened.”

But the engineering technology of Samboro’s “Zip Secure Tech,” according to Lam, means that zippers can now be much tougher to breach. The product will be available in Canada this summer.

However, security has a much broader definition—and one that is far removed from airport x-rays and body scans. Many producers of travel and fashion goods are currently tackling the growing issues and concerns of ensuring that we secure our natural environment for the future.

Ours is a world which has calculated that the amount of electricity required to manufacture a simple tin can will run a television for three hours; it is also a world which then points out that we make a staggering 250 billion cans each year.

We’ve come a long way from the days of the basic “3-Rs” which asked us to reduce, re-use and recycle. It’s a now a much more complex world in which producers and consumers, vendors and buyers are all trying to negotiate terms of engagement.

Those terms include wily concepts such as Kyoto Protocols and carbon footprints on a planet where more than just energy has to be renewable. Increasingly, the goods we buy not only have to be value-laden and durable, but they must

pass life-cycle analyses which indicate whether or not they are inflicting environmental and social damage by their manufacture and use.

Javier Rincon, president of Colombian Leather House, acknowledges that the global community has this heightened awareness, and he is investing in producing materials that are impact-neutral and safely re-useable.

“The trend is to move towards products that have a small, or better yet, no ecological footprint. This includes products that don’t add to the world’s litter problem, aren’t made with nonrenewable resources, and have no impact on human and community health.”

That’s a tall order—but one which virtually every industry must grapple with whether they like it or not.

Similarly, the leather goods industry is taking initiatives and manufacturing in a more sustainable way with new practices, technologies, and a sense of responsibility.

Our products are made primarily of leather, which is a sustainable material because it is a byproduct of the food industry.”

Manufacturers are also getting aggressive with reducing their use of lime and sulfide, as well as their general water consumption—water is costly, so why not reduce? Using less is definitely more in manufacturing; it’s an important way of protecting the environment too. For example, a line

But new compounds and technologies, Chalhoub points out, can’t do everything. They are precisely part of that negotiated space between producers and consumers where there must be some agreement and acceptance.

As for trends in new materials, companies like Louies Berry look for durable, quality materials and fabrics that are plant-based or synthetic.

“The reason is that they last longer, are less wasteful, and are not harmful to n a t u r a l r e s o u r c e s a n d a n i m a l s ,” according to Liang.

Chris Kontogianis of Christopher Kon notes that leather outweighs PVC in its e n v i r o n m e n t a l r e s p o n s i b i l i t y to a considerable degree. (Polyvinyl chloride is a thermoplastic polymer, and the current debate over it focuses on dangerous chemicals that might leach out.)

“Leather is biodegradable and as a rule is much more environmentally friendly than PVC. One way of making leather even more friendly is to use vegetable dye in order to colour the skins.”

The caveat? Consumers have to accept that leathers tanned with vegetable-based dyes are environmentally friendly, but they are also more sensitive to scratches and stains.

So one popular question of the day is: Why not simply use man-made products instead of leather? That way, we can be vegan in our consumer purchase choices. The answer is that man-made leather attempts to replicate the look of real leather but uses PVC and polyurethane (PU) in doing so.

“Man-made products are good because not everyone can purchase higher priced leather goods. The downside is PVC and PU are not biodegradable and the amount of energy consumed to make these materials is quite high,” Kontogianis says.

“M a n - mad e leath e r p ro du cts like vinyl,” agrees Chalhoub, “are popular with many manufacturers because they are low cost, easier to produce, and have limited wastage in cut ting (as opposed to leather). But they don’t have the feel, durability, or beauty of leather.”

At the end of the day, it is all well and good to be organic, sustainable, and vegan if that is what you want to be. “The problem is mass consumption and tonnes of products being thrown away ever y day. There are recycled products out there as well as organic and that is good. However, if we keep buying these goods and throwing them away, then the cause is ultimately lost.

Managing Inventory:

The Balancing Act

Inventory represents the retailer’s largest controllable expense. Too much and you are stuck with markdowns and limited funds to purchase what the customer really wants. Too little and you will find yourself out of stock, with customers hightailing it out of your store, searching elsewhere for what they want.

Getting it right is the age old challenge of retail: not only the quantity, but also which products, at what price, and where. It used to be an art form. Recently, however, a spate of tools has emerged to bring science into the mix.

Cross Channel: Buy Anywhere, Fulfill Anywhere Offering customers multiple channels from which to buy goods is not only a trend; it is today’s retail necessity.

Customers want it all, whenever and wherever they want it.

And inventory must be available in each channel, and in each brick and mortar store, to satisfy these customers.

Yet to stay profitable, especially in today’s challenging economy, frugal inventory investment is the new normal.

So how can retailers respond, limit investments in inventory, and still be in stock to meet demand?

One approach is the emerging Cross Channel Order Fulfillment solution. When a customer is in a brick and mortar store and an item is out-of-stock, the system automatically finds it somewhere else in the chain, determines the best fulfillment location based on criteria the retailer selects, and then the item can either be transferred to another store for pickup or delivered to the customer’s home.

The same approach may be used for online sales through the web-store, call centres, kiosks, mobile devices or even Facebook, with inventory pulled from stores, warehouses, vendors or third party logistics providers.

The payback is both astounding and extremely easy to calculate. How many sales do you estimate you lose each day because you are out-of-stock? How many of these items could be found in another store?

Assuming 100 stores, with 2.5 lost sales per day, at an average unit price of $20, open 310 days per year, the calculation would be as follows: 100 X 2.5 X $20 X 310 = $1.55M Additional Yearly Revenue.

How times have changed! A new set of tools has emerged, based on hef t y algorithms developed by PhDs, that consider a plethora of variables and predict the best markdown price for each item to achieve your objectives for sellthrough and profit.

But the real trick is to first get the inventory allocation right, resulting in limited need for markdowns in the first place. Luckily, similar tools have been developed to optimize inventory, and companies such as Ann Taylor have benefited. Once the inventory allocation is right, then price optimization can be applied.

The Right Products Who knows best which products will sell? The buyers, with all their experience?

Store personnel on the frontline, who hear first-hand from customers what they want? Suppliers, based on their ow n research and analysis? T he customers themselves, who want what they want, but may not know it until they see it?

We think that all of these stakeholders should ideally have input into product design and selection: buyers, store personnel, suppliers and customers.

Again, times have changed, and different tools have emerged to enable collaborative input.

Business intelligence, first and

foremost, can provide the analysis that buyers need to determine what sells and what doesn’t, along with where, when, and why. Did the weather impact sales?

Are there regional differences? As we add products and locations, complexity increases, and these tools can help weed through the data to provide the answers.

Complexity comes not only from the amount of data, but also from different systems. It used to be normal for each functional department to have its own set of applications and analysis, updated at day’s end from POS transactions.

Information was often different in each application, and a silo’d organization developed, with each functional area making its own decisions. Now, with the advent of the internet, information can be available in real time. More importantly, the information can be centralized so that everyone sees the same information.

This approach enables personnel in different departments and locations to trust the information and truly collaborate, with much better results. So buyers and store personnel can communicate and work together to develop and order the right products.

Information can also now be shared outside the organization, with vendors. Tools such as Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) enable visibility to all stakeholders throughout the product development cycle, with faster lead times and more accuracy in manufacturing and product delivery.

Tools have also emerged to canvass customers for their input. One approach is through social media. By setting up a corporate page on Facebook and a Twitter account, retailers can monitor what customers like and, just as importantly, what they don’t like.

It’s All about the Shopping Trip Although asked for their input, often the customer does not know what they want until they see it. It’s not simply about what they can af ford based on demographics. Customers select and favour a retailer if it meets their needs for a given shopping trip.

J.C. Williams Group, a leading international consultancy firm based in Toronto and Chicago, has defined four primary customer drivers for a given shopping trip in its 4Es Strategy Compass Model: Easy (save time), Ego (well-being), Economical (save money), and Experience (a treat). Retailers need to focus on, and excel in, one or two of these customer behaviour drivers, or risk falling into the black hole of mediocrity, as shown in Figure 1 above.

The right Inventory Management tools can enable the behaviour driver that the customer seeks. Cross Channel Order Fulfillment, for example, can make it Easy for customers to find what they need. Other tools, such as PLM, help provide the right product to support the customer’s Ego, or the right amount of automation, to reduce prices for an Economical experience. And in some cases, product development tools can really add to the Experience that the customer seeks.
