Tips for Taking Up

A VEGETARIAN DIET Taking up a vegetarian diet, which encourages the consumption of plant-based foods over animal foods, can have an impact on an individual’s overall health. However, people interested in becoming vegetarians can sometimes hesitate on the best approach to adopt the diet. Phased-in Approach People used to eating meat and dairy can find it difficult to switch to a vegetarian diet immediately. A better approach is to phase in the new diet gradually. This can take various forms, from including a new diet change once a week or going without meat once every two weeks. While progress might feel slow at first, maintaining consistency will help in reaching the eventual end goal. One of the key areas to pay special attention to is in the intake of iron. A deficiency in this nutrient can lead to anaemia, which is a serious condition. From a general perspective, dark leafy greens are a good source of this nutrient. Nuts are an excellent fat and protein source for vegetarians and have been shown to provide healthy nutrients that benefit the heart. Almonds, walnuts and hazelnuts are particularly beneficial in this regard, as are cashews and peanuts. These last two, however, should be eaten in moderation as they have a slightly higher level of saturated fat.
