DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 1

Welcome to the management, players, supporters, and everyone associated with Aylesbury Vale Dynamos ahead of this evening’s fixture. I would also like to welcome back Charlie Jones to Creasey Park. We all really enjoyed having Charlie with us for the 1st part of the season and I continue to wish him well unless he is playing against us of course! Aylesbury Vale come into the game with only 1 league defeat in the last 7 games so are on a good run of form and another tough game awaits us.

I write these programme notes on a Sunday morning and to be brutally honest still raging. As most of you will know me by now, I say it as I see it and am a very easy character to read. There is no play acting, no playing up to crowds, what you see with my expressions hear from my words is raw and real. I have listened back to my post-match podcast and on reflection I feel it is important to apologise to absolutely nobody other than the supporters who had to endure that utter load of…..I will let you fill in

the blank. Last Tuesday I absolved the players of any criticism in our 2-0 defeat versus Leighton Town. It was a competition I had about as much interest in as I do in gardening. On Saturday however the league is a competition I am very emotionally invested in as we all are and to say I was irate doesn’t even come close.

We lost a game 1-0 we should never have lost. That has nothing to do with Shefford Town and Campton or dismissing them, it is to do solely with us. I was annoyed because during the game I felt we were comfortable and in no real danger and that was probably the problem, we were far too comfortable. We looked like we were coasting 1st half.

We had 3 or 4 excellent chances and should have gone in at least 1-0 up at half time. I appreciate the pitch was poor, but the standard of the 1st half was as bad as anything you will see at this level this season. 2nd half we came out, penned them in and put together some decent passages which led to chances.

2 DUNSTABLE TOWN vs AYLESBURY VALE DYNAMOS THE m ANA g ER jo E DEENEY
“the referee’s decision at a crucial moment of the game in the 2nd half was one of the most outrageous decisions i have ever seen on a football pitch.”

Danny Webb was clean in and just as he was about to score the ball bobbled up like I have never seen before and unfortunately, we couldn’t convert.

What proceeded in the next 20 minutes was like a scene out of a horror movie. 1st we lose possession cheaply where there was absolutely no danger at all that leads to back-to-back corners. As many of you have heard me use the term a chain of events well that was a fine example. We then allow their one and only aerial threat a free header 5 yards from our goal for them to score.

Connor Coulson had to play the full game with a pulled thigh muscle. Then it was like a war movie. We lost Robbie Goodman to a knee, Benji Crilley to a lower leg impact and then Alfie Osborne to a groin. In the end we huffed and puffed but it wasn’t to be, and we lost.

We had so many balls into their box and didn’t show enough desire and bravery to score and put our head where it hurts, and it cost us. My group paid the price for not training properly on the Thursday and it was a harsh lesson in terms of continuing standards week in and week out. If you take your foot off the accelerator for a moment you get stung.

The referee’s decision at a crucial moment of the game in the 2nd half was one of the most outrageous decisions I have ever seen on a football pitch. I asked both the referee and assistant referee for explanations however they were far too arrogant to acknowledge they had done anything wrong. Danny Webb is in behind their back line 1 on 1 with their GK and is cynically pulled down. The referee immediately points to the spot, I wasn’t sure if it was inside or outside the area. This is where I and everyone in the ground including their bench clearly don’t understand the rules anymore! It is clear that the

referees have their own interpretations of the laws. My understanding is if you concede a penalty but there is clear intent to deny a goal scoring opportunity then their centre back has got to be given a straight red. Their bench awaits the imminent red card as do we. Then to my utter amazement and every single person in the stadium a yellow card is shown, and the penalty is reversed to outside the area. Their number 5 (only on a yellow) then wins some unbelievable headers late in the game to stop us equalising.

In the grand scheme of things last week hasn’t been a disaster, it’s been disappointing. We are still well and truly in the race for promotion, but we have a lot of work to do. We are only going to remain in the race if we keep winning games. One thing I know with my group is when we have had bumps, we always bounce back, and I have every faith we will have a right go between now and end of the season. The players are aware of how I feel about Saturday, and it is important we get back to winning ways. We cannot control referees, pitches, weather and all the other external factors that affect the outcome of football matches. All we can do is focus, perform to our maximum week in and week out and if we do that we are in with a good shout.

Once again apologies to those that travelled and supported us on Saturday. I would like to think we have created enough smiles and highs this season to have some credit in the bank with you all. I hope we have a great atmosphere under the lights on a Tuesday night to help us bring home the 3 points.

Enjoy the game.

DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 3

A NDREW mADARA s

“thanks to all of you who travelled in numbers to both leighton last tuesday & to Shefford on saturday. we’ve come a long way since our first season as a fan/ members run club in 2017”

A very warm welcome to all of you braving the cold weather to support local football whether you’re here as a fan of the Blues or the Dynamos or simply as an interested neutral or groundhopper. We hope you have an enjoyable evening in our company and get to see a good game of football. In that respect, the omens are good. Matches between our two clubs usually have goals in them and tend to be good footballing spectacles.

Our opponents are always excellent hosts so it’s always nice to be able to repay the hospitality to Mike & Iain and their committee colleagues. As always we wish everyone associated with Aylesbury Vale Dynamos a warm welcome, an enjoyable evening & a safe journey home come the final whistle.

Thanks to all of you who travelled in numbers to both Leighton last Tuesday & to Shefford on Saturday. We’ve come

a long way since our first season as a fan/members run club in 2017. We had no playing budget and borrowed Weatherfield Academy’s minibuses for away travel. On Boxing Day 2017, we won away at Banbury Utd. But we won 2–1 and the Dunstable away support was ecstatic. All two of us. Neil Barker & I were the two DTFC supporters there.

Several weeks earlier we’d played away at Edgar Street, Hereford. There were 1700 Hereford supporters there that Tuesday night who gave our lads a standing ovation at the end of the game. We’d lost 0 – 2 but had battled all the way. In the away section that night stood Scottie & Dean and two contract workers from Dunstable who happened to be working in Hereford.

It’s inconceivable that if we were to play the likes of Banbury or Hereford away nowadays we’d be able to count our

4 DUNSTABLE TOWN vs AYLESBURY VALE DYNAMOS v IEW f R om THE B o ARDR oom

supporters on the fingers of one hand. In another sign of how things have progressed there was no DTFC TV, Talk of the Town Podcast or Instagram stories in those days. None of this has happened overnight. It’s been the result of a lot of hard work from an awful lot of people. My predecessors, Alex and Neil did so much to save the Club and lay the foundation stones for what has happened subsequently.

On the pitch, Joe has taken us from the bottom of the League to a top four spot in just over a season. There’s still points to play for and we have three intriguing away matches to play at Crawley Green, Stotfold and Leighton Town, all with promotion aspirations of their own.

But just as it has taken several seasons to build a proper backroom team we have to be prepared to wait patiently for the success we strive for.

As a Community Benefit Society football club, it is imperative that supporters remember that our community work supporting the large numbers of people that we do every week, has the same importance and value as results at 4.55pm every Saturday. We won’t be breaking the bank to fund an unrealistic budget to achieve short term goals, otherwise we find ourselves back where we started from in May 2017.

Our goal, our purpose is to provide the highest standard of football that we can afford in order to provide a sustainable, long-term, future for our Club.

I have to say thank you to Scottie & Peter for walking from Creasey Park to Bell Close on Tuesday night to raise money for the Club’s charities. They’re both outstanding men, never mind outstanding volunteers who go

above and beyond, like so many of our volunteers, to make this Club represent values of compassion, decency, tolerance, honesty and generosity.

I also wanted to thank John McLoughlin, the Chairman at Leighton Town, for his Club’s tribute to Aaron Bateman on Tuesday night. As a former DTFC Chairman, John knew Aaron well and his Club’s homage to Aaron on Tuesday was greatly appreciated and respected. In case you missed it, last week we announced a partnership with Lifestyle Cards who offer over 5,000 discounts with a wide variety of services, stores, and businesses. Our owners will be receiving information soon on how they can receive their cards. It’s our way of thanking our most loyal supporters for the incredible support they have bestowed on us and an indication of the forward direction the Club is taking.

A week on Saturday we entertain Colney Heath FC. It will be a “pay what you want” admission. We have secured the services of Mark from Farmhouse Catering who will be providing more of his superb pies and mash. As always Mark will offer a generous discount for Owners/Blue Card Holders, so please bring yours to obtain your discount.

Before then we face away trips to London Colney and then to Biggleswade Utd. Those of you unable to get to Biggleswade, may want to come and watch our U18s take on AFC’s U18s in what is bound to be an exciting derby.

Please be loud and proud but respectful towards the match officials and our opponents.

Aylesbury FC enjoyed a long history in senior and junior football dating back to the 1930’s under the previous names of Aylesbury Vale, Haywood United, Belgrave, Stocklake and Negretti and Zambra FC, which was founded in the 1930’s by workers at the Negretti and Zambra company then based in London’s King Cross district. The company moved to the Stocklake Industrial Estate, Aylesbury.

in 1949 and by the mid 50’s the premises had a bar, football, cricket and tennis facilities. The football club joined the Aylesbury District League in 1954. The social club changed its name to Stocklake when Negretti and Zambra sold the premises to the local council, who then leased the facilities; hence the different sections adopted the name Stocklake. Under the guidance of Chairman Mr Ernie Crotty, the club gained many honours including runners up in ADL’s top divisions, before gaining intermediate status in the Wycombe and District League first and senior divisions. Sadly, Ernie was killed in a road accident just before the club moved premises to Haywood Way in 1987.

After gaining senior status and promotion to the Chiltern League in 1988, Stocklake enjoyed many further successes including Division One runners up in 1991, Premier Division and League Cup runners up the following season and Wycombe Senior Cup success in 1995. Cup success was also followed on in the following season, this time the Berks and Bucks Intermediate Cup being added to the trophy cabinet. Belgrave FC was formed in 1983 by Jim

Sullivan who lived in nearby Belgrave Road. Jim had two sons who were passionate about football but were limited to where they could play, so formed a team himself with the help of neighbours Lynne and David Hatcher. By 1990, under the guidance of Danny Martone, Belgrave had grown to five youth teams providing football for over ninety boys from the Quarrendon and Haydon Hill areas of Aylesbury.

1996 saw the forming of two senior teams under the Belgrave FC name and by the turn of the millennium teams were represented at all levels from Under 8’s through to seniors, some 200 players being registered, this also including Stocklake Ladies. In 2000 four youth teams won league and cup honours, whilst the senior team went on to win the Aylesbury District Cup, the Field Shield and ADL Premier Division runners up.

At the start of the 2000/2001 season, the senior Belgrave FC team was renamed Haywood United following an amalgamation with Stocklake FC with Danny Martone voted in as chairman of the new club. Haywood United joined the Spartan South Midlands League and won promotion into Division One after two seasons.

Season 2002/2003 saw a difficult start in Division One, but with the arrival of manager Jon Franklin and his assistant Keith Walker, the club eventually consolidated finishing in 9th place. Promotion was gained to the South Midlands Premier Division the following year after a campaign that saw 23 wins, 7 draws and only 4 losses. Haywood United proved themselves capable of

staying in the Premier Division after finishing 3rd in the 2004/2005 season in a campaign that only include one loss in the twenty matches after Christmas. The club also entered the FA Cup and Vase for the first time and won the Buckingham Charity Cup in 2006.

Season 2006/2007 began with Haywood United becoming Aylesbury Vale FC and saw Keith Walker and Steve Gleinster take over as joint managers and steadily build a squad. This was recognised in the 2008/2009 season, under the management of Mark Eaton, with a good cup run in the FA Cup and FA Vase, winning three rounds in the FA Cup losing to Level 4 side Gosport after a replay, and losing out in the 4th round of the FA Vase to Leiston Town. After Christmas the side suffered due to long term injuries and finished mid table. May 2009 saw a major new development in a new semi-professional side vote for a name change. Aylesbury Football Club was formed under the leadership of Chairman Roger Dance and assisted by Vice Chairman Danny Martone. Former Chairman Bill Harrison was made President of the club. Great success on the field of play was to follow, with the team having a fantastic run in the F.A. Cup. We were the last ‘level five’ team in the country to remain in the

competition and were rewarded with a visit to Haywood Way for the F.A. Cup trophy, allowing the team, supporters, and local people to get their hands on this famous trophy and make the most of this memorable occasion. We were finally knocked out of the competition by Wealdstone in a close game. A brave and superb display was witnessed by a bumper crowd of 800 plus.

Meanwhile, away from the midst of F.A. Cup drama, our success continued, becoming ‘Double Winners’ Winning both the Spartan South Midland League and League Cup capping an extraordinary season and gaining promotion to the Southern League Division 1 Central.

Steve Bateman took over in 2013/14, steered the club to safety in his first 6 months in charge. Then in 2014/15 with Bateman at the helm FC has their most successful season to date most successful to date. Playing at the highest level in the club’s history, the team finished third in the League, having been pushing for promotion all season and narrowly lost out in the semi-final to Bedworth United having already beaten them twice in the league.

the 2015/16 finished with a flourish as the club finished just outside the play off positions but had the consolation

of our first major Cup Final, beating Chesham United in the Berks & Bucks Cup at Windsor. Steve Bateman and his management team resigned at the end of the season and Danny Gordon & Gareth Risbridger took the helm, supported by Paul Bonham, Ryan Wiffin & Aaron Norman. Davis Haule took over from Gordon & Risbridger in December 2016, appointed brother Brian as his assistant and recruited former coaches Fraser McLachlan, Aaron Wiffin and added Ryan Collings to his back-room staff for the 2017/18 season

In 2018/19 after ten seasons in the Southern League the club was relegated back to the South Midlands League after a difficult period for the club.

Alf Buckland, a resident of Finmere Crescent, formed Bedgrove Dynamos in 1968. It was created to fill a void in activities for boys within the Bedgrove area on the south side of Aylesbury. In 1980, Dave Bayliss became involved when he brought his Cub side to the Bedgrove Park. The teams amalgamated and Dave went on to be the chairman for 21 years, stepping down in the year 2000. Within two years and barely a full strip between them, they managed not only to win the Under 12’s Aylesbury & District League (ADL) but went on to win the 13’s & 14’s league in consecutive years and, by which time, they now had four teams at various age groups.

In 2019 two became one when the sides amalgamated with the intention of allowing the youth of the town to progress through junior football to youth and then adult football at the highest possible level.

34 DUNSTABLE TOWN vs AYLESBURY VALE DYNAMOS

The two teams last met in October at Pancake Lane where a late goal from Sean Immanuel had been enough to give the Blues a share of the points in a 2-2 draw. Games between these two sides are traditionally closely fought with the Green under the experienced management of Fergus Moore & veteran, Scott McGleish, always a difficult & competitive side to play against. This season they’ve boasted the 4th best defensive record in the League, having conceded, before kick off, a miserly 24 goals in just 24 matches.

In a blitzkrieg nine minute first half spell the Blues scored three times. Sandwiched in between the second and third goals, was a goal for former AFC man, John Shamalo, who reduced the arrears before Tolu Ikuyminu scored his second, just a minute later.

Tolu’s brace showed composure and a clinical finish for the chances created for him. He could even claim the assist for Joe Sellers-West who scored while lying on the ground for Dunstable’s second goal, the original cross from Danny Webb on the right had just failed to find Joe’s diving head.

A lovely goal which started with Connor Coulson playing the ball out to Ruari Mills who found the adventurous Webb who got to the bye-line for Tolu to return the cross and Sellers-West to score probably the most unorthodox goal of his career.

Webb had been unfortunate not to be on the score sheet early on when his bullet header produced a good save from Austin Byfield in the Leverstock goal.

Shamalo had outjumped the Blues defence to pull a goal back but Benji Crilley’s long throw out on the right just 60 seconds later caused panic in the Green defence, who couldn’t clear their lines. The ball bounced free to Tolu who from a tight angle found the back of the net with power and precision.

The goals coming in the 29th, 31st and 38th minutes, the periods of the game when the Blues have scored the fewest number of goals all season.

A towering header from Joe SellersWest on the verge of half time couldn’t do justice to Luke Dunstan’s perfectly flighted corner kick. Joe’s header unfortunately clearing the cross bar. But this had been a super display from the Blues and the perfect antidote for a goalless 90 minutes at Harpenden, five days earlier.

If there were any half-time doubts among supporters that the home side might take their foot off the gas in the second half, anxieties were quickly put aside. On the hour mark, Webb got his deserved goal. Webb boasts an impressive record of a goal every other game and has justified Deeney’s decision to seek his signature in the autumn.

Twice before then, he’d been denied by the impressive Byfield with excellent positioning and safe hands.

His goal when it came was largely due to Ruari Mills’ quick thinking and alertness who intercepted a forward pass and unselfishly passed to Webb, who found himself in acres of space and able to pick his spot to give the Blues an unassailable lead.

It was cold, bright day, with a bobbly pitch, but on 13 minutes, Town took the lead in a scratchy fashion. No one cared: Goals win derby games. Ads was fouled after an excellent driving run. Ricky’s free kick was won at the back post and Scott pressed the defensive clearance to get his chest on the ball and force the opener. That’s Scott’s 10th for Town.

On 18 minutes, the pacy striker cut inside and Cookie tipped a strong drive on to the bar. Minutes later and Ricky cleared off the line after the winger rounded Cookie.

These crucial interventions kept Town narrowly in front. The game went a bit flat with Town controlling territory and maintaining a strong defensive shape. Town scored within the first minute of the half to alleviate any nerves. From the center, Brandon sent the ball up. Scott chased and won a corner. Ricky

sent it deep to the back post, there was no challenge and the ball looped in.

The next minute and it was three. Scott’s persistence won him a free-kick. Brandon put the ball in the box and the ball went in off a defender. That’s Town’s 100th goal of the season----an anticlimax for such a milestone goal.

Town’s fourth was the pick of the bunch. Ben won a flying, sliding tackle and pushed the ball wide to Joe.

Joe and Ricky worked the ball up the line. Ricky squared the ball to Joe on the edge of the D and he sidestepped the defender to crash the ball in off the bar.

There were a few half chances, but the main talking points of the final 15 minutes were a flurry of yellow cards costing several players their pocket money. And that was that! Professional, calm, controlled, lovely-jubbly!

After successful walks to Leverstock Green, Harpenden, Tring, and Leighton Buzzard, we are planning our final walk this season, to our match against Crawley Green, which will bring our total to 100km.

Our route is 8 miles and fortunately it passes at least 8 pubs. The Globe, Old Sugar Loaf, Victoria and The Glider in Dunstable, with refreshment points at The Black Horse, The Castle, Brewery Tap and Chequers in Luton.

You can join us leaving Creasey at noon on Tuesday 11th April and help us raise some funds for the club, to continue our work within the local community, and for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and the OLLIE Foundation. Please donate to the crowdfunder below.

In the village on the banks of the River Colne is The Green Dragon which has 2 ales on cask including Pride and Doom Bar. The Bull, also near the river has a cosy lounge and fireplace and serves St Austell’s Tribute and Timothy Taylor’s Landlord. If travelling by public transport, a pit stop at The Horn close to St Albans station would be recommended or a short walk to the Robin Hood.
