A Fresh Look and Fresh Books in the LRC Recent research has shown that the academic library is a welcoming learning space, and plays an important role in student retention. The library staff continues to improve the spaces, resources, and services offered in the Learning Resource Center (LRC). For the past year, we have been assisted mightily by the Operations staff who have patiently helped us in our renewal efforts. A big SHOUT-OUT to them from the LRC staff for all their pushing, pulling and heavy lifting. Thank you! The LRC now has a new book display that is filled with books geared toward unique educational and recreational activities. The display will regularly feature new titles and those of special interest. We invite you to take a look – the round stand is located near the reference desk and open seating/periodicals area in the center of the library. Accompanying this display, you may have already noticed our “Selected New Titles” e-mail blasts, which will be sent out regularly to inform you of our latest additions to the collection. Several faculty members have spotted titles chosen specifically to support their professional interests and course assignments, and we hope to see a growing awareness of our special efforts to obtain relevant materials for staff and students. Can’t find what you’re looking for? Please contact Louise Greene, lgreene@richland.edu if you are aware of a title the LRC does not offer that would support your courses!

International students tour schrodt On July 24, 15 Taiwanese students and one faculty member from the China Medical University Department of Nursing visited Richland’s campus to tour the Schrodt Health Education Center. Dr. Saunders and Dr. Treat welcomed the group and spoke about the Illinois community college system and the ways in which Richland serves its community. Dean Colbeck, along with several Health Profession faculty members, led the students on a tour of the laboratories and classrooms. The students were very impressed by the technologies available to Richland students and the hands-on and simulated practice our students obtain prior to beginning their clinical experiences. The students were in Decatur as part of an internship program coordinated by Millikin University and St. Mary’s Hospital. The students participated in classroom work and social activities, as well as a variety of hands-on learning experiences in various hospital departments and sites throughout the community.

StudentEmployment
Student Employment has been updated and is fully electronic! All four areas of students and employment have been combined into Student Employment: College Workstudy, Federal Work-study, Cooperative Work-study, and Intern Work-study. The student application is available online for any of these areas. This common application will help us keep better track of our on-campus College and federal work-study students for eligibility and reporting purposes and for our off-campus students who are employed through the Cooperative Work-study grant, an internship, and even through our Work Experience Practicum & Seminar courses, generally numbered 290. This will make it easier for you, as student employee supervisors to check and hire student employees.
The Student Employment Manual is also being updated and should be completed sometime this fall. With all the student employment information linked through Career Services, students can receive direct informational assistance for writing resumés, preparing for interviews (an important aspect of preparing for the job market) and other employment information. One aspect that we hope to take advantage of in the future with this merger of all student employment is a new feature on our College Central Network site, Survey Module. This is a new sophisticated survey instrument that we are currently learning and plan on using it improve our services. If you have questions about student employment please contact Michael Diggs; ext. 205; mdiggs@richland.edu or Jill Jenkins, ext. 307; jjenkins@richland.edu.

StudentEmployment: Internships Internships are in demand despite the downturn in the economy. If you have students who need an internship or are just looking for a part-time job in their area of study, please encourage them to contact Career Services regarding the Illinois Cooperative Work Study Program. It just may be the edge they need to obtain a job.
The Cooperative Work Study Program is an employer wage reimbursement program designed to encourage employers to provide part-time and full-time employment or internship opportunities for qualified students in their program of study. It also allows Richland to collaborate with local business. Contact Michael Diggs for further information.
CAREER SERVICES in YOUR CLASSROOM Please remember that Career Services can come to your classroom and help with your instruction at any time during the semester! We can supplement your instruction with a myriad of career related topics; such as soft skills, filling out job applications, dress for interviewing, and many more. Don’t forget to obtain your copy of “Career Services for your Classroom” during first week back. The pamphlet lists a number of topics that will help give your students additional life-enhancing information. The most common requested topic is resume writing. Many of you know resume and interviewing has changed drastically over the past several years and we all need to best advantage in order to obtain those few and far between jobs that barely exist today and are extremely hard to get. Please contact Michael Diggs, Ext. 205 or mdiggs@ richland.edu or Jill Jenkins, Ext. 307 or jjenkins@ richland.edu.

Dr. Lily Siu, lsiu @richland.edu
Dav e Wi lso n to be Fe atu red at Er l a nso n Late in August, the works of Dave Wilson, Associate Professor of Art at Black Hills State University, will be featured. Mr. Wilson earned a M.F.A. graduate in Painting from Illinois State University, Normal, Illinois. Dave has previously taught at Joliet Junior College, Eureka College, Illinois State University, the International Music Camp, and the University of St. Francis, in addition to offering various art workshops within the community for children, students, and adults. His artwork also displays in juried and invitational exhibitions in addition to two-person, and solo exhibitions. His current body of work combines performers, design elements from nostalgic movie posters, and the medium of television to create ostensibly superficial portraits in distressing comedic situations. He noted in his artist statement for the exhibit: “I primarily utilize television and film performers as the figurative motif in the artwork and find their constructed comic personas intriguing because they unintentionally introduce an element of tragedy. Consequently, these characters develop a wide range of emotion under the guise of comedy. In some instances, their characters become so engaging and believable that they surpass the perceived identity of the performer as an individual. This point of disagreement, between the individual performer and the construct of his character, is where I find a room to create.”

Relay for Life Lisa Eskew, ldeskew@richland.edu Relay for Life was held at Richland Community College on July 20-21. This was our 17th year sponsoring this event. Fifty-five teams participated in this year’s walk, which raised more than $168,000. A greater number of food vendors participated this year, and all were very pleased with their results. Our own “water wagon” was there cheering on the walkers. A special thank you is extended to the following: • Maintenance for putting up the banners and setting up the tables for the cancer survivor dinner. More than 625 meals were served! • Cleaning crew for keeping the restrooms clean and full (all night long). • Chef Tucker for lending us the pastry kitchen where the meal was served. • Beau Hanger, Barb Mosier, and David Holtfretter for their organizational skills.
