Whether they’re on when commuting to work, doing chores around the house, or working out, podcasts are all the rave right now. The topic options are truly endless and it’s the best feeling to find something (and someone) you really connect with and want to listen to every week. The best part about a podcast is that really anyone can try their hand at them if passionate about a topic – and there’s quite a few talented individuals running their own show from right here in the Valley. We got to know five local podcast hosts (shoutout to Felicia Romero of Hi Felicia podcast, who is on our cover this month!) and talked to them about why they started their podcasts and what inspires their topics (page 40).
If looking for a chic way to listen to podcasts, page 85 highlights a stylish Bang & Olufsen portable speaker. Or, if music is more your thing, flip to page 68 for a roundup of local restaurants and bars that have live performances on their weekly schedules.
While we have a little while left until the weather truly cools down, the calendar is finally hotter than the temperatures outside. Pages 55, 60 and 66 are showcasing all of the fun shows, philanthropic events, tournaments, and more to check out this month.
Other highlights in the September issue include a girls getaway to Wickenburg (page 88), a fall trip guide around Connecticut (page 92), local shrimp dishes (page 98), and a look at the new coffee shop-meets-wine bar-meets-market Zingara (page 106).
Enjoy the start of Scottsdale’s busy season, and gear up for all the fun that is on deck for the next few months!
All my best, Gabby Leighton

Jennifer Bookspan has always been a people person. She champions the successes of others and offers unwavering support when it matters most. For these reasons and countless others, Bookspan has made a name for herself in corporate recruiting and human resources for over two decades. Now, as
the visionary CEO behind Forbes.jobs, she’s revolutionizing the job search experience for top talent, recruiters, and companies.
Born and raised in Stockbridge, Michigan, a one-stoplight kind of town, Bookspan attended Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan, where she earned a degree in public
administration. In college, Bookspan’s interest in recruiting was piqued, as she found herself genuinely curious about her peers’ passions and helped them discover their authentic paths. In 1995, she relocated to Arizona (and has called the Valley home ever since) to attend Arizona State University, where she earned her MBA.
With her passion and freshly printed diploma in tow, Bookspan began her career as a corporate recruiter in the late ’90s. Her journey took her across the Valley, climbing the ladder at companies like Govig & Associates, JMB Consulting and Zillow. Throughout her career, she supported hundreds of people in discovering their true callings and ideal roles. Admittedly, she’s received too many calls to count from happy clients thriving in their new positions. Those calls make her job worth it.
“Supporting individuals in finding happiness and fulfillment in their work, which significantly impacts all areas of our lives, while also ensuring financial security for themselves and their families is one of the most rewarding aspects of recruiting and my career,” Bookspan says.
After two decades in corporate America, Bookspan was ready to set out and create something of her own. That something would
be a career ecosystem, as she always envisioned, where individuals could navigate their professional paths more easily and successfully through reliable tools, resources and connections. In January 2023, that special something became what is now Forbes.jobs (www.forbes.jobs).
“Forbes.jobs was born out of a vision to create a space where job seekers are not just names on a screen, but individuals with aspirations and potential,” Bookspan says.
Unlike other platforms, Forbes.jobs supports aspiring leaders on their entire professional journey, from manager to director to C-suite and board-level opportunities. It offers curated career resources, thoroughly vetted recruiters, and top career and leadership coaches. Talent profiles on Forbes.jobs are more comprehensive as well, allowing job seekers to highlight themselves and their skills in ways traditional resumes do not permit. Personalized job opportunities and recommendations are then generated based on each person’s talent profile, giving each job seeker a truly individualized experience.
“We’re not just matching resumes to vacancies; we’re crafting futures,” Bookspan says.
Very few career resources cater to senior leadership roles and above, prompting Forbes.jobs to focus on this particular segment of the job market.
“[It is critical] that our platform is a confidential place that attracts, hires, and retains excellent and diverse leaders so that those leaders can help develop tomorrow’s leaders,” the founder says.
Beyond this, Bookspan’s desire to provide a comprehensive hub of top career resources in an easily accessible way inspired her career advancement website. The platform is a meticulously curated marketplace, complete with the top 5% of recruiters nationwide, career coaches, and career articles and lifestyle content, all of which goes through a stringent vetting process. Through Forbes.jobs, talent can connect with recruiters, coaches, and industry leaders, leveling the playing field for all individuals seeking the best tools and opportunities.
Since its inception, Forbes.jobs has continually evolved under the guidance of a team with substantial recruitment backgrounds, including Bookspan herself. The goal is to enhance services for job seekers, recruiters, and companies alike to make the job searching experience as seamless as possible.
“We’re committed to introducing new features, such as a community platform fostering networking and support across diverse industries and fields. Continuous education and learning opportunities for job seekers are also part of our plan,” Bookspan says.
When Bookspan isn’t making waves in the recruitment world, she is spending time with her husband, Neil, their four children, and their family dog. Whether Bookspan and her family are enjoying a meal, catching a movie, or embarking on a weekend hike together, these cherished family moments provide muchneeded R&R for the busy CEO.

The weight of the world isn’t on your shoulders. It’s in your legs.
EJ Hughes grew up a “club kid.”
“No, I was not going to tween raves,” Hughes says. “I was a member at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale as a kid. They even gave me my first job at 15.”
Despite his passion for helping kids at his local branch, heightened when he took part in the club’s Keystone community service program throughout high school, after graduation, Hughes enrolled in the engineering program at Arizona State University.
“I admired my grandfather, a Motorola engineer, so I planned to follow in his footsteps, all the while still working at the club while at ASU,” Hughes says. “Calculus class helped change my perspective.”
Realizing engineering was not his path, Hughes changed his major to political science, graduating with his degree in 2001. Over the next 15 years, Hughes served the Boys & Girls Clubs in roles ranging from branch director to campaign director, twice earning top club in the nation honors from the Boys & Girls Clubs of America along the way.
“In 2013, I was accepted into the ASU Lodestar Center for Philanthropy & Nonprofit Innovation, where I worked on a project for A New Leaf helping families break the cycle of homelessness and domestic violence,” Hughes says. “As a father of three, their work to impact multiple generations inspired me greatly, as did its deputy director, Torrie Taj.”
Similarly inspired by his passion, when Taj joined Child Crisis Arizona in 2015, she wasted no time sharing its mission of safe kids and strong families and its critical work as one of the largest foster care and adoption programs to license, train and certify those interested in providing a home to a child in need.
By 2016, Hughes joined Child Crisis as its director of strategic initiatives, and in 2023 he was named its chief operating officer just as the organization announced its most ambitious project to date.
Earlier this year, Child Crisis broke ground on a 38,000-square-foot, net-zero campus that will centralize its operations and services under one roof and allow for collaborations with Ballet Arizona, United Food Bank, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and more.
“The campus and these partnerships will allow us to collectively assure that children, youth, and families receive high-quality wraparound services in one location,” Hughes says.
EJ Hughes has dedicated his life to serving kids and building strong families
Arizona native Jevin Hodge grew up with everything and nothing all at once. “My mother raised my brother and me on her own, so in the financial sense we struggled, living in affordable housing and using food stamps when necessary,” he says.
Hodge’s mother was resilient and taught her boys the importance of hard work, education, and community.
“She empowered me to push my limits while living in gratitude and always learning,” says Hodge, who played the drums in the marching band, participated in football, basketball, and track, served as student body president, and even founded his own nonprofit to connect fellow students with community and volunteer opportunities while still in high school.
Hodge also took his mother’s advice and applied to universities east of the Mississippi in order to gain new perspective. He was accepted to George Washington University in Washington, D.C., and was the first in his family to attend college. Hodge worked multiple jobs, often on the same days, to afford his education, but still made time to volunteer each week. Upon graduating in 2016, he quickly earned a job at LINK Strategic Partners working as its national engagement director.
“That same year my mother fell ill, so I moved back home to help care for her while opening a Phoenix LINK office and traveling for national projects as needed. I also picked up where I left off in the community,” Hodge says. He joined the board of the Booker T. Washington Child Development Center, the longest-running Head Start school in Arizona, and was soon named its president, a role he still holds today. Under his leadership, the organization has grown from serving 150 families annually to more than 750.
Hodge also joined Suns Charities 88, and, in 2023, he joined the board of Jewish Family & Children’s Service (JFCS). “The depth of the behavioral health and social services programs provided by JFCS, especially to youth, coupled with their full-service health clinics and workforce development programs made saying ‘yes’ one of the easiest decisions of my life,” Hodge says.
According to Hodge, his family wants to be the people who make things better for others – especially kids – through action and empowerment. “And yes, this includes my hero – my mother – who is now doing well and active with her local city council and school board.”
As a model and content creator, Phillip Robert Holmes’ job is to showcase clothing and accessories on a daily basis, and he does this while making sure that he still stays true to his fashion sense by putting his own personal flair on each project.
Holmes describes his style as “effortless, fashionable and timeless,” and his go-to outfit – a nice pair of pleated trousers with a T-shirt, a Celine belt and a pair of classic spectator loafers – exemplifies just that.
“One of the styling rules I always follow is that of Coco Chanel; ‘Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off,’” says Holmes, who gravitates toward neutral colors and believes every man should have a classic white button-down in his closet. Some of Holmes’ most coveted brands are Aime Leon Dore, Prada, and Reiss, with his guilty pleasure store being Zara.
Family also plays a part in Holmes’ style – he never leaves the house without his signet initial ring (his twin brother has the same one) and he credits his mother as his first fashion inspiration. In his adult years, however, he turns to streetwear and people-watching on his travels to New York and Europe for ideas.
Tell us about your accessories collection. The right accessories can make any outfit feel elevated. My go-to accessories are my rings (which I have purchased from my travels or my mother over the years), layer necklaces, stacked bracelets (my Cartier Juste un Clou bracelet is my fave), and a bag (Currently collecting a few Goyard bags).
What the best style advice you could give to other guys? I always say that style doesn’t have to be built from scratch. You can get inspired from where ever or whoever. It’s all about making it your own and having confidence.
What fall trends are you looking forward to? I’m obsessed with statement oversized coats and deconstructed suits. I love the modern take on men’s tailoring that was shown at Louis Vuitton and Kenzo.
In the vibrant world of interior design, Jamie Van Noord stands out not only for her exceptional talent, but also for her unique and captivating personal style. As the senior lead designer at Treasure in the Detail, a local interior design studio, Van Noord’s approach to design is intentional, just like her approach to fashion.
Her signature look is effortless, timeless and modern, and includes an artful blend of elements that exude a laid-back yet edgy vibe. Picture her sporting a pair of cool sneakers, a large brim ranch hat, a stack of curated gold bracelets and rings, ripped jeans, and an oversized jacket or blazer layered with a designer blouse or graphic T-shirt.
Van Noord’s style has evolved over the years. “As a woman in my 40s, I strive to feel confident,” she says. “Personal style takes time to develop and often can be marked by different phases of your life.”
A lover of basic color palettes with whites, blacks, and neutrals, Van Noord enjoys adding patterns to her outfits. To complete her look, a good hat (by Olive and Pique) is a must-have for her.
What is your favorite store? Rent the Runway. I love mixing up my look and being able to pick out new pieces two times a month. I mix up what I choose with accessories and clothing and find it to be a genius service! I can change up my look depending on the season and take risks with without a hefty price tag.
How does your style differ on the weekend? On weekdays, you will find me with a pair of leather pants or ripped jeans with edgy sneakers and a fun blouse and blazer or oversized jacket. On the weekend, I add heels and my top-secret tip to looking pulled together is a good blowout at DryBar.
Who influences your style? Interior design directly influences my style – we design with intentionality for our clients in the same way I approach my own style. What I am trying to convey? I find myself drawn to clothing in a neutral color palette with an edginess that is layered and cohesive.
Meet five hosts of local pitch-perfect podcasts
BY KAYLOR JONES / PHOTOS BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONEIn recent years, podcasts have taken the world by storm. Whether after business advice, health and wellness tips, or some good old-fashioned motivation, there’s a local podcast that’s guaranteed to be a perfect fit. It’s time to put faces to the names – and voices – of the hosts of some of Arizona’s best podcasts.
Arizona native Felicia Romero was studying to be a lawyer when she felt the fitness bug biting. Before opening her first gym in 2004, she competed in figure competitions, placing fourth in the world, and became an eight-time fitness cover model.
Romero, who has a master’s degree in exercise and wellness from Arizona State University, sold her third and final gym in 2017 and set her sights on helping even more people reach their goals. As a fitness and business mentor, Romero helps thousands of fitness coaches as they strive to build online businesses of their own.
In 2019, she started the Hi Felicia Podcast (@thehifeliciapodcast) to connect even more directly with her audience. “Honestly, I love talking,” Romero says. “I find it easier to build community and connect through speaking, and I wanted to share stories of my own journey of yo-yo dieting and the dangers of extreme dieting.”
Today, Romero couldn’t be more proud of what she’s built, posting episodes every week for four years and amassing over 500,000 downloads. Whether the topic is business tips, hormone regulation or spring cleaning, Romero still feels herself growing with each episode.
“I’ve learned to really listen when having a conversation versus thinking about what I’m going to say next. I cringe at my first 20 episodes because I interrupted the guest or constantly interjected.”
Romero hopes that her podcast’s friendly, conversational tone makes listeners feel like they’re really in the room with her and her guest, taking inspiration from their thoughts and ideas in the same way that Romero has been inspired by those around her, especially her family.
“I love finding inspiration in the little things, but if I were to name one person, it would be my mom. I was raised by a single mom and have witnessed how hard she worked and still works. She is truly selfless, leads by example, and absolutely motivates me to be better.”
In a world full of obstacles, it’s Brittny King’s mission to stand out as a source of positivity. The business and life coach looks at every day as an adventure, whether she’s hiking the French Alps or just wandering through Costco.
“The essence of creating a fulfilling life is often quite simple,” King says. “It’s about aligning with your values, making intentional choices, and finding joy in the present moment – and the journey itself, rather than the fleeting sense of accomplishment you get upon reaching a destination.”
King encourages others to step outside societal norms and pursue nontraditional paths to success, just as she did when she left her teaching career to work as an educator for Lululemon, manage a spin studio, and become a certified holistic health coach before launching her life coaching business and podcast.
On King’s podcast, the Positively Real Podcast (@positivelyreal_podcast), she aims to close the gap between inspiration and action. She provides tangible steps for listeners to employ in their everyday lives as they start on the path toward success and happiness, whatever that means for them. “I believe that everyone has untapped potential waiting to be unleashed, and it’s my mission to help others realize and harness that potential. I firmly believe that I don’t have anything inherently special or unique. I want those who listen to me to think, ‘If she can do it, so can I.”
Through it all, King’s listeners serve as the driving force behind her content, but she cites her daughter, Ellie, as her greatest inspiration.
“Observing her navigate through life with such pure authenticity reminds me of our innate essence as human beings. She is my driving force and the reason I dedicate myself to serving others daily. I aspire to set an example for her, showing her that she can forge her own path in a world that often tries to dictate who we should be.”
For Adam Loiacono, a physical therapist (PT) band performance coach for the Phoenix Suns, the idea for a podcast of his own first struck during a conversation with a WNBA player.
“This player was having a tough go at rehab after a surgery and I had to provide a ‘pregame’ pep talk before our session started. I reminded her that sports rehab is about finding small wins each day while enduring the long journey,” says Loiacono, who over the course of his career had noticed a gap in the content geared toward PTs and performance coaches.
“There’s so much out there about how to improve your technical skills, but not so much about everything else that influences successful sports rehab or training.”
With Finding Small Wins (@finding.small. wins), Loiacono has made it his mission to fill that gap, pulling back the curtain on the sports world with entertaining behind-the-scenes stories from expert guests, all of whom have working knowledge of the industry. As a doctor of physical therapy and certified strength and conditioning specialist, Loiacono has plenty of advice for listeners to improve their own health and performance, and he’s proud to distinguish himself from those in the mainstream media who are motivated by selling or promoting something.
Creating and recording a podcast has provided Loiacono with an opportunity to tap into his curiosity and creativity, and he hopes that this, along with the importance of going back to the basics, comes across to listeners.
“In terms of rehab, a common misconception is that we need the latest and greatest thing to be the best,” he says. “It’s similar to the fashion industry – trends like baggy jeans and tie-dye shirts come and go just like Shake Weights or the Bowflex came and went. But no matter what decade we’re in, everyone still buys new socks and underwear. Doing the basics exceptionally well and being consistent with your habits are what provide long-term results.”
Entering her 30s marked a turning point in Lex Goodwin’s life. After more than 10 years in the corporate world – first in sales, then in culture consulting and leadership development –Goodwin began a transformative health journey.
“I opened my eyes to what I needed to do to live more authentically, to stop going through the motions and living in a way that fit society’s – and corporate America’s – expectations,” Goodwin says.
Looking for a creative outlet and a way to share her newfound passion for integrative health, Goodwin resolved to start a podcast, and after a year and a half of hard work, she pressed upload on the first episode of The Goodwin Social (@thegoodwinsocial).
“It was very liberating. It took a lot of preparation, delays from second-guessing myself, and building a backlog of episodes so I could stay consistent once I launched, but it really felt like I did it.”
Alongside nutrition and work-life balance, her favorite episodes feature interviews with small-business owners, all of whom constantly inspire her as she works to build something of her own.
“I think it’s really admirable and exciting to see people grow with authenticity in something they have a passion for,” says Goodwin, who is pursuing a health coaching certification from the Integrative Institute of Nutrition. “I’ve always yearned to have a business of my own. It was a leap of faith, but at one point you were always uncomfortable with what you’re comfortable with now.”
Goodwin, who has always considered her love of connection at the heart of who she is, hopes her relatability helps each episode feel like a conversation with a good friend. At the end of the day, making people feel comfortable and understood is what gives her a sense of purpose. And in both her interviews and in life, she never tires of hearing people say, “I’ve never told anyone this before, but. . .”
Golf influencer Tori Totlis is dedicated to building a strong community of women golfers of all skill levels. Since she first picked up a club over 15 years ago, her love for the game’s physical and mental challenges has propelled her into a career of sharing advice and encouragement for other golfers online.
Though Totlis enjoys connecting with her followers through short clips on her Instagram (@tori_totlis), she found herself craving a way to create more long-form content for her audience. As an avid podcast listener herself, gravitating toward everything from education to motivation to pure entertainment, it was a no-brainer to start a podcast of her own.
With new episodes twice a week, T-Time with Tori Totlis features interviews with golf experts on a wide variety of topics, from beginner advice to travel and wellness tips to inside looks at what it’s like to work in the golf industry.
“There are not a ton of women’s golf platforms out there talking specifically to the female recreational golfer. I know how much joy this game can bring and wanted to celebrate that on my podcast,” Totlis says. “My daily goal is to help women, whether they’re just starting out or are seasoned players, and to encourage them on their next steps, whether that’s joining a ladies’ league, registering for their first tournament, establishing a handicap index, or getting fitted for clubs.”
Throughout her 15-year golf journey – and as the host of annual women’s tournaments and luxury golf retreats – Totlis has noticed countless misconceptions about women in golf. From being told they play too slow to keep up with the men to prejudice against so-called “golf models,” who in reality often spend countless hours on the green and regularly play in leagues, she’s heard it all.
But no matter what, Totlis hasn’t let the stereotypes stop her from playing the game that changed her life – and she refuses to let them stop anyone else.
WHEN IT COMES to interior design, few names carry the weight of creative ingenuity and visionary brilliance quite like Jaque Bethke. As the General Partner and Architectural Interior Designer of Jaque Bethke Design, LLC, Jaque has built a reputation by consistently delivering exceptional spaces that transcend the boundaries of traditional design. With an approach that merges architectural finesse and artistic flair, Jaque Bethke Design has become synonymous with creating immersive environments that tell stories and evoke emotions.
Jaque’s journey into the realm of design and architecture was fueled by an insatiable curiosity and an innate love for exploration. As a child who frequently moved, she was exposed to a rich tapestry of cultures, people, and places, which ignited her passion for documenting her experiences. These early encounters laid the foundation for her pursuit of architectural history and design, a passion that has never wavered. “I truly can’t remember ever wanting to do anything different,” Jaque recalls.
One of the hallmarks of Jaque’s philosophy is her unique approach to collaboration with clients. Instead of simply executing a design, the firm initiates a dynamic process of understanding and co-creation. Through a custom “deep dive” questionnaire, they delve into the client’s vision and preferences, creating a comprehensive vision board that captures not just the visual elements, but the essence of the project. This process becomes the heartbeat of the project, a conceptual journey that transforms ideas into tangible spaces.
In a field often driven by trends, Jaque Bethke Design stands apart by setting trends. “If you are designing with the trends, you are already behind the times,” Jaque asserts. Instead, the focus is on creating spaces that are deeply rooted in originality and innovation, resulting in environments that endure and evolve with the passage of time.
Recognizing the shifting landscape of sustainability, Jaque integrates sustainable practices into her projects from the outset. Her team embraces the challenge of working with unique landscapes and topographies, allowing nature to take center stage while preserving the environment. For them, sustainability is not a checkbox; it’s a holistic principle that underpins their approach to every project.
The team’s perfectionism is harnessed to maintain a delicate balance between uniqueness, budget, and efficiency. Addressing challenges swiftly, vetting solutions, and moving forward with unwavering focus ensures that each project stays on course.
Jaque is set to launch a groundbreaking website in early 2024, offering curated items from her projects for public purchase. Product licensing initiatives and expansion into new markets are also on the horizon, along with an amplified presence in the hospitality and golf sectors.
With an unwavering commitment to creating experiences that transcend time, Jaque Bethke Design is poised to continue shaping spaces and leaving indelible marks on the world of design.

THE BARN DOOR Store celebrates more than ten years in the industry, originally founded by Jeff King in 2012 as an offshoot of his residential remodeling business. Today, King works alongside his sons, Chad and Adam, to manufacture and install a wide selection of custom interior barn doors, modern metal and glass sliding doors, room dividers, decorative ceiling beams, and fireplace mantles.
“When the company first started, I was building the doors, staining the doors, installing the doors, and involved in selling the doors,” says Chad. “We’ve come a long way since the small workshop we started in.”
Today, Chad is a managing partner alongside his father, and the business employs more than twenty employees in a 12,000 square foot manufacturing facility in the Scottdale Airpark. Chad’s brother Adam would become a part of the business shortly thereafter as well, making the King’s operation a full-on family affair.
“I approached my Dad about wanting to join the family business, and he actually had me interview for the position!” says Adam. “I’ve now been a managing partner with the company for seven years, and I have tremendous passion to continue to grow our family business.”
The stylish barn doors produced locally can be space saving, create rustic appeal, or dramatize a room artistically. They can adapt to different styles and can be used in just about any space. Now into 2023, The Barn Door Store is launching a brand-new line of modern metal and glass sliding doors that aim to bring a modern aesthetic to the company’s offerings, although the classic sliding barn door, each made from high-quality hardwood, also remains a timeless design element available from the Kings.
The Barn Door Store also recently installed an impressive ceiling beam display in their Scottsdale showroom, boasting it to be ostensibly the biggest in the valley. “We take innovation very seriously
and know, with a name like The Barn Door Store, we have to be the leaders in our category,” says Adam. “We also strive to be leaders in all aspects of customer service.”
It’s their combination of customer service, top-quality products, and strong family bonds that make the Kings and their business so accomplished in the field. It’s what has kept the business’ doors open, pun totally intended, for more than a decade, and it’s what’s earned them recognition by the esteemed HGTV.
“After eleven years in business, we’re only getting started,” says Chad. “Keep an eye on us for the latest innovations in our industry. We are ‘The Sliding Door Kings.’”
Given their proven track record and beautiful products, we couldn’t agree more. We’ll be very eager to see what else 2023 brings for the King family and The Barn Door Store.

THE WORLD OF interior design is a realm where creativity and practicality merge to create spaces that reflect the essence of those who inhabit them. Jeni Robison, the founder of Dettaglio Interior Design, has mastered this art by blending her deep passion for design with a profound understanding of her clients’ individual stories. With a philosophy centered around creating unique, timeless, and functional homes, Dettaglio Interior Design stands out as a boutique, full-service, residential interior design firm that sets new standards in personalized design experiences.
Jeni’s early fascination with home plans and weekly room redecorations alongside her mother planted the seeds of her passion for interior design.
At Dettaglio Interior Design, collaboration is at the core of every project. Clients often approach the firm with partially drawn house plans and a distinct style in mind. However, Dettaglio’s unique approach challenges the notion of
predefined styles, opting instead to begin the design journey by analyzing concept images and focusing on the special features of the home.
Jeni emphasizes working closely with her clients at every stage to ensure that their homes are a true reflection of their vision. This not only fosters a sense of pride but also creates spaces that seamlessly integrate aesthetics with functionality. Each project showcases a distinct style and Jeni and her team pride themselves on transforming their clients’ wishes into quality, timeless, and cohesive designs.
One of Dettaglio Interior Design’s standout features is their comprehensive library, a 3,500 square foot studio filled with an array of design samples. Whether it’s matching decorative tiles with cabinetry finishes or selecting lighting fixtures, the library’s resources enable a seamless integration of elements, reducing the need to run around town for materials.
The balance between incorporating current design trends and maintaining
timeless appeal is an art form that Jeni has mastered. While trends catch the eye, she believes in weaving them into a classic design foundation. From cherished artworks to treasured heirlooms, Jeni and her team celebrate the incorporation of meaningful elements that turn houses into homes.
The harmony between functionality and aesthetics is a vital aspect of Dettaglio’s design philosophy. Kitchens, often the heart of a home, serve as starting points for these discussions, establishing an overall design direction that resonates throughout the space.
Jeni’s emphasis on involving an interior designer early on ensures that the design process seamlessly integrates with architectural plans. In a world where cookie-cutter designs abound, Jeni Robison’s Dettaglio Interior Design stands out as a beacon of personalization, creativity, and functionality.

In an era where healthcare is becoming increasingly personalized and proactive, the Triple Threat Health Check at The BioMed Center in Scottsdale is taking the medical world by storm. The Triple Threat Heath Check is designed for patients aged 40-70, aims to revolutionize healthcare by offering an all-encompassing assessment of cancer risk, cardiovascular health, and cognitive decline. This diagnostic tool utilizes cutting-edge technology, merging conventional and integrative medicine to provide a holistic health picture.
With a team of skilled physicians led by Dr. Drobot and Dr. Abdelmalak, the Triple Threat is set to redefine how we approach preventive care and pave the way for optimized patient health. By combining conventional medical techniques with integrative approaches, this service aims to paint a complete health picture, enabling patients to take charge of their health.
The Triple Threat Health Check offers a comprehensive array of diagnostic tools that go beyond routine check-ups. Some of the assessments included in the Triple Threat Health Check include:
BLOODWORK AND LABS: This detailed bloodwork helps identify potential risk factors, such as elevated cholesterol levels, inflammation markers, and blood sugar irregularities, enabling early detection and intervention. This test also includes food sensitivity, vitamin/mineral micronutrient, and hormonal assessment.
SCAN: The EKG assesses the heart’s electrical activity, aiding in the detection of cardiac abnormalities that may indicate cardiovascular disease. Early identification of these issues can prompt lifestyle changes
or targeted treatments to prevent more severe conditions.
FULL BODY MRI: Utilizing state-of-theart imaging technology, the full-body MRI provides a non-invasive look inside the patient’s body. It can identify potential tumors, cancer, aneurysms, abnormalities, or other health concerns that may not be detectable through standard physical examinations.
HEART SCAN/CV SCREENING: A heart scan that uses a proprietary and FDAcleared machine learning algorithms to non-invasively analyze atherosclerosis (plaque) and stenosis using standard CCTA studies. AI algorithms generate a 3D model of the patient’s coronary arteries, identify their lumen and vessel walls, locate and quantify stenoses, as well as identify, quantify and categorize plaque.
BRAIN EEG: The brain electroencephalogram (EEG) assesses brain wave patterns and electrical activity. It can reveal early signs of cognitive decline or neurological disorders, enabling timely intervention and the development of cognitive preservation strategies.
CANCER SCREENING TEST: A Multi Cancer Screening test which detects more than 50 types of cancer. With a simple blood draw the test can provide early detection insights that can help patients be proactive about their health.
One of the most unique and invaluable aspects of the Triple Threat Health Check is the two-hour consultation with both Dr. Drobot and Dr. Abdelmalak. This personalized interaction allows patients to discuss their test results in detail, ask questions, and receive expert guidance regarding their health.
Dr. Drobot and Dr. Abdelmalak are leading experts in their respective fields, combining years of experience in conventional and integrative medicine. This fusion of expertise empowers patients with a comprehensive understanding of their health status and options for optimizing their well-being.

For entertainment, DJ Special T will be spinning tunes, and a state-of-the-art 360-degree photobooth will be on-site to capture the moment.
There will also be a lively raffle and live auction, where attendees have a chance to win exclusive prizes and experiences, including a seven-day stay in Durango, Colorago, a chef’s dinner for 10, and a chance to have their dog on the cover of WAG Magazine. There will be more than 20 raffle prizes and about six live auction items to bid on.
All proceeds from the evening will go
to help recruit and retain pet therapy teams as well as provide support, supplies and training for the nonprofit’s current therapy teams and children they serve. The organization currently has a waiting list of facilities and schools who want their therapy dogs there for the children, but they don’t have enough volunteers.
“We are in great need of registered pet therapy dogs for our programs and are always looking for qualified and caring individuals to help with this,” Lopez says. “As a lifelong animal advocate and having worked in the nonprofit sector since 2005 helping animals, children, women and aging seniors, I have always been most passionate about dogs. This mission was a perfect fit for me as I truly believe that animals have the power to magically heal people from whatever they are going through and what better way to assist children during this difficult time in human history, but to work for an organization who is making a huge impact on the children we are serving.”

Nationally recognized artist Jill Friedberg is one of 11 artists showcasing their works in Coming to Terms, a compelling and interactive exhibit currently at Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts Center Space gallery (www.scottsdaleperformingarts.org).
The show encourages viewers to contemplate how artwork makes them think and feel. Based on the suggestions of five aesthetic experts in philosophy, psychology, theology, art history, and neuroscience, the show embodies specific themes of feelings. To add the element of subjectivity, viewers pair 11 aesthetic terms next to the 11 artworks that best describe their feelings about it.
“Visitors should think deeply of how they feel about the art, but also how others may perceive this artwork differently,” says Sydney Ritter, Scottsdale Arts public relations specialist.
Friedberg’s imaginative diptych Return to Sunlight I and Return to Sunlight II are vivid photomontages created with acrylic paint, ink, pencil, oil, pastels, seeds, pencil and wood shavings, and glitter on a canvas and wood panel. Through her work, Friedberg aspires to spark an inner dialogue – how can people bring themselves back from darkness, and can they imagine an environment where they feel safe, peaceful and productive?
“Simultaneously, I am pondering how we may preserve our planet whose very soul energizes and enriches our lives,” she says. “I believe these questions can motivate viewers into action by engaging their inner and overt consciousness. The pursuit of this goal inspires much of my work.”
By juxtaposing incongruous subjects into her pieces, Friedberg becomes a storyteller, using her artful vignettes to emphasize differences or similarities between objects or people. Her first step is inserting between 20 and 40 layers of photographs into a computer program. “I then transform them into one layer before transferring the flattened image to a canvas,” she says. “I then paint into them and include repurposed items such as fabric, yarn, milkweed, clothing, and other possibilities.”
Friedberg frequently uses pictures taken in exotic settings. “My parents were passionate about exploring diverse cultures and traveling, and I share that passion,” she says.
Friedberg received her Bachelor of Science degree from Northwestern University, and she also took classes at the School of Art Institute of Chicago. She was selected to be a member of ARC, an internationally recognized exhibition space and women’s artist cooperative in Chicago. Since that time, her art has been in many museums, galleries, and universities. Her art was chosen for the Biennial at Tucson Museum of Art in 2018 and 2020, as well as the Art Expo in Chicago. She also has the distinction of having a recent piece accepted into the Archives of American Art of the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C.

Every second of every day, a battle of good and evil rages inside your body. The good is the immune system, armies of cells that defend the body from illness and infection. The evil comes in the form of the pathogens, viruses, bacteria and mutated cells that are programmed to do harm.
When the body fights cancer, the good guys don’t always win. Healthy cells require a complex combination of internal and external signals between enzymes and proteins to work properly and regulate their growth and division. When those signals go awry, the cells may run amok and grow out of control, forming a tumor.
But new immunotherapy treatments, emerging technologies and ongoing research are giving doctors more tools to help the immune system do the job it was meant to: fight back against threats like cancer. And researchers are learning more about how the immune system works, how cancer hides from immune cells and how some immune cells may actually be coopted to help cancer grow.
“Our immune system is designed to recognize native and non-native cells that can harm us,” says Stephen Lynch, MD, Intake Physician and Vice Chief of Staff at City of Hope Phoenix. “The problem is it doesn’t always work. Other times, it works against us.”
The immune system is an efficient and powerful biological machine. Think of it as an invisible bio army that protects you from millions of germs and fights off viruses and infections. So powerful are its responses that they may cause fevers, aches and pains, inflammation and swelling.
“It’s because your immune system is ramping up—it’s doing what it’s supposed to do,” Dr. Lynch says. And it does more than fight off disease.”
If the human immune system is so strong and sophisticated, why do nearly two million Americans develop cancer every year?
It may not be because of immune system failures. In fact, it’s likely that your immune system may regularly fight off cancer or pre-cancer on a regular basis without you even knowing it.
“The immune system is absolutely critical in fighting cancer,” Dr. Lynch says.
Also, the immune system is better designed to fight foreign cells that invade the body from the outside, such as bacterial and viral pathogens. Cancer cells are the body’s own cells that have gone rogue, and the immune system may not always see them as a threat.
When cancer cells thrive, it’s often because they:
• Evade or hide from immune cells using signals that healthy cells may use
• Shut down immune cells and sometime use them to proliferate
• verwhelm or exhaust the immune system with sheer numbers and rapid growth
A fine balance exists between the burden of cell mutation and how well the immune system may fight it off. The tipping point at which cancer begins to overwhelm the immune system is not always known.
“There are lots of different reasons why that might happen,” Dr. Lynch says. “Some of it has to do with the DNA of the tumor. Some of it has to do with the aggressiveness of the cancer.”
Research has shown that cancer cells exert tremendous sway over some innate and adaptive immune cells and use them or recruit them to grow and travel to other parts of the body. Because cancer cells are the body’s own cells that have gone rogue, they have inside information on which signals to send to trick immune cells.
For instance, regulatory T-cells (T-regs) are like the immune system’s off switch. They’re designed to monitor an immune response and shut it down after the bad cells are vanquished.
But Japanese researchers have concluded that cancer cells can trick Tregs to shut down the immune response, allowing the cancer to proliferate.
Researchers also have found that cancer cells reach out to T-cells with long, hollow strands called nanotubes and extract matter from the immune cells’ mitochondria, literally sucking the life out of them.
For scientists, the challenge is to help strengthen immune cells against cancer without triggering an autoimmune disease or creating a “cytokine storm” that allows the immune system to start attacking healthy cells.
You may help support your immune system by eating a healthy diet, getting plenty of restful sleep and exercising. But to help the body fight cancer, those steps and others may not be enough.
With some cancers, the immune system may need to be stimulated or amped up to better respond to cancer cells and recognize them as bad cells that need to be destroyed.
Enter immunotherapy.
Immunotherapy drugs are designed to help the immune system distinguish cancer cells from normal cells. Immunotherapy drugs cover a broad range of categories, including those listed below.
Unlike chemotherapy and radiation therapy, which kill cancer cells directly, immunotherapy drugs don’t attack cancer cells. Instead, they kick-start the body’s powerful immune system.
“Immunotherapy is not going in there and killing the cancer cells,” Dr. Lynch says. “It’s simply pulling the disguise off the cancer cell that’s trying to hide and allowing the immune system to recognize it and do the job it’s designed to do.”

2024 Lotus Emira I4
Base Price: $99,900
Lotus is a storied British brand of essentially Formula 1 race cars built by founder Colin Chapman to satisfy a racetrack need to unseat the likes of Enzo Ferrari that dates back some 70 years or more. Always a small car company, whether measured by volume or size, Lotus had an on again, off again history as one of racing’s top echelon winners that maintained an uninterrupted line of production cars for street use mainly to fund their racing addiction.
Over the years, alluring and coveted marquee offerings like the legacy Elise and Exile have gained a cult-like following. Still, Lotus, at best, is a niche player in the sports car world and currently has just one model that’s sold in the U.S. — the Evora GT, which is actually more practical for daily use than any Lotus before it.
Last year Lotus launched its critically acclaimed and award-winning Emira V6, earning a rightful place as the most accomplished Lotus sports car ever made. With striking design, astonishing performance and benchmark ride and handling, its supercharged 3.5-liter powerplant matched to a choice of six-speed manual or automatic transmissions delivers a driving experience
that could only come from Lotus.
Now, for 2024, the appeal of this midengined two-seater adds a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with state-of-the-art technology to deliver incredible performance and efficiency. The powertrain is supplied by its technical partner Mercedes-AMG, and develops a remarkable 360 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque with responsiveness of zero to 62 mph in just 4.4 seconds and a top speed of 180 mph delivered via the comfort of a smooth and rapid shifting dual-clutch transmission.
The interior is roomy, and there is a small shelf behind the leather upholstered seats for a soft bag or two and a few packages. Build quality is impeccable, well-furnished and well equipped. When tested, the Emira delivered superb body control without the car ever feeling harsh, no matter which driving mode. Overall driving dynamics were hugely engaging and delivered a magnetic fascination with endless appeal.
This is the brand’s last model to use an internal combustion engine and all future models will be fully electric. Emira – such a marvelous way to say goodbye.
Price as Tested: $101,990

Connecticut is proof that big things come in small packages. Despite being the third-smallest state by area, Connecticut –whose foliage season typically runs longer compared to northern New England states – is a big-time, bucket list travel destination in the fall and even into the early winter months.
The must-see regions are nearly endless this time of year, so a good rule of thumb is to choose two or three to focus on during any given visit, with Morris, Cornwall, Mystic, Greenwich, and New Haven being especially lovely to experience right now.
Morris is perfect for those looking to connect with the outdoors in an authentic, rustic and romantic way thanks to the nationally lauded Winvian Farm, which is set on 113 acres and borders extensive woods and lakes. The farm, featuring a five-star restaurant, spa and nature center, is limited to just 18 resort cottages on property, including one cottage made from a fully restored 1968 Sikorsky HH-3F Pelican helicopter and another in an adult treehouse suspended 35 feet above the forest floor. It is a quick drive to the White Memorial Foundation, 4,000 acres of forest, fields and wetlands complete with an environmental education center and nature museum. The White Memorial is a great spot for hiking, kayaking, canoeing, wildlife viewing, and fishing, as long as weather permits. Both Winvian and White Memorial are ideal for watching the leaves change as well.
Similarly quiet and relaxing is Cornwall, which is home to the red Cornwall Covered Bridge, one of three surviving covered bridges in the state. Measuring 172 feet long and 15 feet wide, the Cornwall Covered Bridge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has been a symbol of the area’s rural heritage for almost 160 years. Guided electric bike tours over the bridge and across the town are especially popular this time of year as they allow visitors to enjoy the foliage at their own pace and with the help of pedal-assist technology as needed. For those who prefer views that require breaking a sweat, the Appalachian Trail and Mohawk State Forest are conveniently located in Cornwall as well. For an area so proudly rural, there are some impressive culinary options in the area including Frank Food Co., offering elevated home cooking, and celebrated French restaurant RSVP.
With Mystic, a town nestled along both sides of the Mystic River and divided by the famous Mystic River Bascule Bridge, there are still fall vibes and views in every direction, but given it is a seaport,
expect more of a maritime vibe. For example, it is home to Mystic Aquarium, which features New England’s only beluga whales as well as the endangered African penguin; and the Mystic Seaport Museum, which is the nation’s leading maritime museum. Founded in 1929, the museum is home to four National Historic Landmark vessels. It features a working preservation shipyard, a recreated 19th-century seafaring village, historic gardens, and much more. Whaler’s Inn is the quintessential New England waterfront hotel if staying the night as its perfect for families and couples alike. It will be especially impressive to history buffs as each of the five buildings has a storied past, some that date back more than 100 years. The hotel is located in the heart of the downtown and near both the aquarium and museum as well as excellent bars and eateries, including the cocktail-driven Port of Call, farm-to-table favorite Engine Room, and South American-meets-New-England seafood spot S&P.
Those seeking something a touch more metropolitan but still with dreamy views should consider posh Greenwich, which has four public beaches for romantic strolls and a slew of high-end resorts and eateries. Of note is Delamar Greenwich Harbor, which boasts 82 waterfront rooms, a full-service spa and the award-winning L’Escale Restaurant. The hotel offers a slew of packages for the discerning guest, including intimate outdoor tours by yacht, couples massages, and tasting menus. Delamar guests are also in the middle of everything, and are just minutes away from the famed Bruce Museum and downtown Greenwich, which is filled with upscale boutiques, art galleries and bistros.
Finally, there is New Haven. Recently named among the top places to go in 2023 by New York Times, New Haven is home to Lighthouse Point Park, which features 82 acres of nature trails, a bird sanctuary, an antique carousel, and Yale University. The acclaimed institute of higher learning is prettier than a postcard this time of year, and there are myriad things to do and see on the campus. If seeking to soak in some culture, plan to visit both the Yale University Art Gallery, the oldest university art gallery in America, as well as the Yale Center for British Art. The University is also home to Shops at Yale, a one-of-a-kind collection of over 65 local boutiques, retailers, cafes, restaurants, and world-renowned theaters, galleries, and museums. Certainly, there is no shortage of fabulous dining in New Haven, with some best bets in Fair Haven Oyster Co.; Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana; Bar; The Anchor Spa; Ordinary (do not miss the cocktail museum inside); and Louis’ Lunch, which was the official birthplace of the hamburger in 1900. The accommodations in New Haven are as varied and impressive as the culinary scene, with some of the best bets this time of year being Hotel Marcel; The Blake Hotel; and The Graduate, a university-themed hotel that features “pizza payphones” in the lobby that connect to two of the city’s famous pizzerias.

The Mission at Kierland offers a twist on happy hour – guac-tail hour – from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Among the most popular items on the special menu is the Jidori Chicken Wing ($6 each). To make, each wing is brined for 24 hours in a garlic fish sauce and air-dried to seal in the flavor before being tossed in a sticky reduction of stock, piloncillo sugar, garlic, lemongrass, ginger, and makrut lime leaves. Before being cooked to order, the wings are dusted with a zesty powder made from merken, guajillo, and Chimayo chili peppers, chile de arbol, garlic, onions, makrut limes, smoked paprika, Szechuan peppercorns, and various spices. Each wing is plated with pickled cauliflower florets, carrots, garlic, Chimayo chili powder, and parsley as well as dollops of housemade garlicky pepper sauce infused with dulse seaweed. The Vig sets few limits for its bar team.
“Our signature cocktails from the creative minds who are working behind the bar and know firsthand what our guests want,” says Cesar Cramton, president of Genuine Concepts, the local restaurant group that owns The Vig which has multiple locations across the Valley. “Our only real ask is that they choose spirits that have a connection to the community, meaning either local or in partnership with a distribution team who will come in and host events with us to connect our patrons to the brands in a meaningful way.”
According to Cramton, as the heat lingered on this year, the bar team was especially adamant about keeping things light when it came to libations on the menu, leading to offerings like Feeling Frisky ($14).
“The base is Effen Yuzu Citrus Vodka, which has slight sweetness with melange of fruity notes, notably a zippy grapefruit zest,” Cramton says. “We temper it ever so slightly with Haku Japanese Craft Vodka as it has more botanical characteristics.”
Melon liqueur and house simple syrup are combined with the vodkas in a shaker with ice to enhance the sweet notes without overpowering, and then both grapefruit and lime juice are squeezed in to take the tart notes to another level.
“We shake the contents hard enough to get the tiniest bit of froth before straining into a coupe glass,” Cramton says. “Almost immediately, the heavier melon liqueur sinks to the bottom of the glass, giving the cocktail its two-toned, almost glowing appearance.”
Garnished simply with either an edible flower or dehydrated lime, depending on the location, Feeling Frisky tastes a little naughty, but oh-so-very nice and refreshing during the final hot days of the year.

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOSDavid Brito is the executive chef of Wrigley Mansion, crafting an ever-changing globally inspired menu as well as twists on new American classics at Geordie’s. He also oversees all banquet and special event dining operations.
Tell us about your mission at Geordie’s. People have raved about Wrigley Mansion for decades. The history! The view! The architecture! My mission is simple: to make people rave just as much over the menu as they do the property itself. I invite everyone to come in and see how we are meeting the challenge.
What are some must-order menu items?
Indulge in our bread and French butter service. From there, the menu changes regularly, but when available, do not miss our dry-aged duck, foie gras with variations of onions, white asparagus with bone marrow sabayon, Mishima Wagyu New York Strip, or black cod.
What inspired you to cook?
Television. I would love to say it was generations of family passing on recipes, but truly I was just a huge fan of Food Network, Iron Chef in particular. After graduating from Cesar Chavez High School in 2014, I enrolled at Arizona Culinary Institute to try my hand at all of the wild things I saw cooked on television.
Tell us about your journey after culinary school.
Not to be punny, but I came out hungry and devoured every morsel of hands-on training in my first professional kitchen, Omni Scottsdale Resort & Spa at Montelucia. I met James Beard winner Alex Stratta there, and he became my mentor in fine dining. I then cut my teeth at Andaz, Match at the Found:re, Sonata’s, Kai Restaurant, The Reserve, and Café Monarch before cooking for a private dinner brought me to Wrigley earlier this year.
What dinner?
Christopher Gross, founder and executive chef of Christopher’s at Wrigley Mansion, hosted a party for his staff at The Reserve, and I wanted to blow the doors off for them. The now-CEO of Wrigley, Jason Caballero, was at that dinner and we became friends, eventually leading me to my new culinary home.

Though Hera Ambrosio was born in Brazil, she was raised in a family of adventurous restaurateurs in Italy, inspiring her lifetime love food and travel, especially across southern Europe. Enamored by both the approach to hospitality and quality ingredients in the region, Ambrosio, now a veteran restaurateur herself who has called the Valley home since 1993, opened Zingara in North Scottsdale earlier this summer.
The Italian word for “gypsy woman” and inspired by her love of travel and exploration, Zingara is a combination coffee shop, bespoke market, and wine bar that serves small bites and takeaway meals showcasing the cuisine of Spain, southern France and Italy as well as coffee, European wine and luxury goods.
The expansive 3,330-square-foot indoor space is accented by two large patios that add an additional 400 square feet. The feminine design is clean and modern with floor-to-ceiling windows in nearly every direction. The natural light enhances the whitewashed oak and brass accents that dot the interior and provides the perfect setting for remote workers who visit to
In the morning, Zingara partners with Infusion Coffee & Tea Crafters in Tempe, offering both standard cups of joe as well as espresso-based beverages, including one with pistachio cream. There is also an impressive list of nonespresso-based drinks, notably golden milk, which features turmeric powder, cinnamon, ginger, and black pepper and is good for detoxifying the body and reducing inflammation; latte rosso, with dehydrated beet powder and whipped cream; and a matcha latte, boasting ceremonial grade matcha green tea powder packed with antioxidants. The drinks are paired with a menu of fresh pastries and morning sandwiches as well as healthy bites including chia pudding, overnight oats, and avocado toast. There is an expanded menu for Sunday brunch with a bevy of sweet and savory items as well.
The wine bar shines a light on varietals from France and Italy, with charcuterie and cheese boards as well as signature small dishes including bone marrow, croquettes, chorizo-stuffed dates, hamachi crudo, steak tartar, and roasted beets. There is also a selection of primarily global beers and highend spirits.
Finally, the market is a curated shopping experience offering luxury home goods and daily staples like milk and eggs as well as organic produce, Vermont maple syrup, olive oil, pasta, and specialty food items like Terra Market wagyu beef. It also features a grab-and-go area with fresh sandwiches and salads.
Zingara’s coffee shop is open daily from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., transforming into a wine bar from 4 to 9 p.m. The market is open daily from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
