Hello, October! I couldn’t be happier to welcome the month of seasonal soirees, pumpkin everything, and (finally) cooler weather.
The city is officially out of its summer hibernation and it shows – people are finally out and about again and there’s tons of events (new and returning) on the docket.
For starters, looking toward early next month, the 12th Annual Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships (aka The Polo Party) will take over WestWorld of Scottsdale. This month, we caught up with Carolyn Likas (page 40), one of the players in the tournament, on her passion for polo, what to expect at this year’s event, and much more.
Until then, there’s plenty to do this month. For foodies, restaurants have recently launched new menus (page 86) featuring fall flavors, seasonal produce and festive ingredients. For more F&B fun that fits with the season, consider trying the new pumpkin martini from 32 Shea (page 122) or ciders from regional brewers (page 120). And, to get to know some of the stars behind the Valley’s best bars, turn to page 44, where we are featuring five kings and queens of the local cocktail scene.
Looking to find new events to attend this year? We got the lowdown on both Dreamy Draw Music Festival at the recently renovated Scottsdale Civic Center (page 88) and Ballet Arizona’s Fashion & Fizz (page 90). Some local fan favorites returning include: Maricopa Home & Garden Show (page 75), the UMOM Buckle & Bangles Gala (meet its bow tie-clad CEO Jackson Fonder on page 25), and there’s a whole lot more on pages 80 and 82.
Additional highlights include a profile on a local woman who founded a company based on healing through the power of affirmations (page 28), a look at The Eleanor (page 138), a new midcentury modern south Scottsdale coffee and breakfast spot. We’re also celebrating the return – after its summer hiatus – of our Noticed section (page 36), where we spotlight local fashionable women who attended events. Enjoy the beautiful climate and all the festive events that are coming up!

Vino con Stelle, an intimate black-tie affair, was Gateway for Cancer Research’s first foray into the Valley’s fundraising scene. In just a few short years, it has garnered a reputation for being one of the most exclusive wine tasting events, blending an unforgettable guest experience with an unmatched opportunity to make a difference.
From a spectacular wine list and incredible entertainment to ambience that only a storied venue like The Arizona Biltmore can deliver, this year’s Vino con Stelle is shaping up to be an extraordinary evening of wine under the stars.
Hosted by Gateway Founder and Chairman Richard J Stephenson and Vice Chair Dr. Stacie J. Stephenson, Vino con Stelle takes attendees on a virtual tour of the world by way of wine – all while highlighting the impact of early phase cancer research.
Upon arrival, guests will experience a cocktail reception featuring a perfectly paired food and wine tasting before embarking on a threecourse dinner guided by celebrity Sommelier Anthony Giglio. The program portion of the evening will be led by comedian and actress Caroline Rhea, whose personal cancer testimony underscores why funding cancer research is critical.
Join us at Vino con Stelle on Saturday, October 14 at The Arizona Biltmore, where 100% of all contributions directly fund early phase cancer clinical trials.

UMOM New Day Centers CEO Jackson Fonder is dedicated to helping the homeless population
Today, Jackson Fonder is most often seen around town in a suit, and almost always with one of his colorful bow ties, which he collects.
“My look and life today is about as far away from it was in my childhood,” says Fonder, who grew up in a blue-collar
community in Wisconsin just blocks from Lambeau Field.
One of five children, Fonder lived with housing insecurity on a near-daily basis.
“My father, a lifelong Teamster, was a truck driver, mechanic, and food vendor during Packers games. He worked very hard but
had to persevere through several layoffs and economic shifts. As a result, we were always one missed paycheck from catastrophe,” Fonder says.
In his teens, Fonder did not know what he wanted to be when he grew up, and college was not an option given his family’s financial situation and his penchant for making trouble instead of good grades. Upon high school graduation, he began working two jobs, six days a week, including rigorous hours in a factory.
“I knew I wanted to find a way out, so I looked to the military,” Fonder says. “I often get asked why I chose the Air Force. Funny enough, when I walked into the recruiting office in 1982, all of the other divisional recruiters were out getting lunch, so Air Force it was!”
His first station was at Williams Air Force Base in the southeast Valley, marking Fonder’s first Arizona residency.
From there, the sky was the limit – quite literally – for the high-flying Fonder, who spent the next 11 years in full-time service. He went on to attain the rank of first sergeant, travel the world several times over, and serve under President George H. W. Bush as director of protocol, traveling with the first family often.
“My time in D.C. was especially important to me as I met my wife, Kathleen, while living there in 1990,” Fonder says. “She was a server at a local restaurant where I took a date that did not work out. After it fizzled, I went back to the restaurant a week later to get Kathleen’s number, and the rest is history.”
In addition to leading him on the path to meeting Kathleen, the Air Force also afforded Fonder the opportunity to obtain multiple advanced degrees, and by 1994 he was ready for a change (though he would continue to serve in the Air National Guard until 2004), accepting a leadership position with USAA, based out of San Antonio, Texas.
While in Texas, Fonder became a father of four while spearheading several projects, notably the launch of USAA in Phoenix, which eventually brought him to the Valley for a second time.
“We opened in 2001 with 20 people, and grew it to 3,000 people within 10 years, all while supporting the community in a big way via volunteerism, board participation and charitable gifts,” he says.
Fonder became very active within the Arizona community, supporting myriad causes. By 2015, Kathleen could not help but notice how Fonder’s face lit up whenever he was asked to share his passion for philanthropy and how others could get involved.
“In her infinite wisdom, she suggested a career change so I could work directly for a nonprofit,” he says.
Taking her advice, the Fonders moved back to his native Wisconsin in 2010 to accept the role of executive director of a local nonprofit that provided basic needs to families much like his own growing up, and then in 2012 he joined Catholic Charities of Madison as the president and chief executive officer. Under his leadership, the organization opened a recovery center for those
battling addiction as well as the area’s first full-scale homeless resource center.
“We promised our children that the Midwest would be home until they were grown, all the while dreaming of getting back to Arizona,” Fonder says. “When my youngest graduated college, Kathleen and I came back to the Valley for the third time; this time for good.”
The couple relocated to the Valley again in 2020 when Fonder accepted the CEO position at UMOM New Day Centers (www.umom.org.), an innovative provider of shelter, housing, and services for people experiencing homelessness in the Valley.
“UMOM provides safe shelter and supportive services for nearly 700 individuals experiencing homelessness every single night. We also have more than 900 units of affordable housing across the Valley,” says Fonder, noting the organization also has its own on-site Boys & Girls Club and is in the midst of a renovation that will add additional shelter beds to keep up with the need. UMOM also offers job training, healthcare, healthy food, basic financial training, and more to help people tackle the issues that led to homelessness in the first place.
On Oct. 13, Fonder will lead one of the organization’s biggest fundraising events of the year to support this critical work via the 14th annual UMOM Buckle & Bangles Gala, an under-the-stars Western-themed event located at Fairmont Scottsdale Princess.
“For this event, we eschew tuxedos and gowns for cowboy couture, offering a rousing night with live music, dancing, and the chance to bid on sports experiences, vacation packages, spa days and much more,” says Fonder, noting that individual tickets start at $400 and tables at $4,000. Anyone can sign up to bid on auction items remotely. “With the community’s help, we hope to raise $500,000 toward fighting family homelessness. No child should have to worry about having a safe place to sleep.”

The weight of the world isn’t on your shoulders. It’s in your legs.
If there is one thing Scottsdale resident Cat Kozuch can wholeheartedly vouch for, it’s the subconscious power of affirmations.
As a 19-year-old sophomore at Arizona State University in 2008, Kozuch endured a terrifying dune buggy accident in Puerto Penasco, Mexico, that left her with two broken vertebrae and paralysis from the waist down. “We went down a hill too fast, and even though I had a seatbelt on, it malfunctioned,” she says. “I was thrown against the seat and broke my back in two places.”
After being airlifted to St. Joseph’s Hospital, Kozuch endured a six-hour surgery culminating with the dreaded words, “You will never walk again.” It would soon be clear that the doctors underestimated Kozuch’s ferocious sense of resilience.
During her stints at St. Joseph’s and Barrows Neurological Institute, Kozuch began tapping into the power of affirmations. She even went so far as to yell at her toes, ordering them to move. Soon, her toes waved at her, followed by her legs waking up.
An endearing touch during her rehabilitation process occurred when Kozuch’s father brought her teddy bears from his work-related travels. Kozuch pinned the bears to her whiteboard to provide more encouragement to heal. Miraculously, she exited the hospital using a boot and a walker after three months. Eager to get her life back on track, she returned to school, balancing physical therapy with the last two years of her communications degree – all while on crutches.
Looking back on her experience, 15 years later, Kozuch began wondering if the power of affirmations could be as beneficial to children as they were for her. “In a world influenced so much by social media, kids are bullied now more than ever. I started envisioning a bear that could combat this phenomenon and address self-confidence, nurturance and self-esteem.”
Her full-time medical salesperson position presented a challenge, so she devoted all her free time to creating and refining her vision. The payoff was Winston, the star of her Believe A Buddy company (www.believeabuddy.com) that debuted in August 2023. Winston is a cuddly bear with hug-ready paws and 52 interchangeable affirmation cards.
“My dream is to have these motivational bears placed in hospitals, shelters, mental health clinics, schools, and even holding rooms in police stations.”
Mikaela Rice's mission is clear: empower parents, save lives, and ensure that every child has a safe and enjoyable experience in the water.
She does this through her company, Kids in the Water, a platform to teach parents how to instruct their children how to swim. Her journey into water safety education first began years ago when she was a swim instructor. Fast-forward to today, when Rice, a mother of three, was tasked with figuring out swim lessons for her children, who all learn differently.
After trying multiple instructors and classes, she realized that her role as a parent made her the best instructor for her children.
“I quickly realized there was no one better than me [to teach my children how to swim]. Not because I was a former swim instructor, but because I am their mom. I know their needs. I know how they learn best.” she says. “So in our own backyard pool, I taught my son how to swim. We did it in our own time and in a way I knew he would enjoy.”
She soon decided to share her methods with other caregivers through Kids in the Water, a platform that equips parents with the tools and knowledge they need to teach their children to swim. Rice and her team have developed an online swim course, aptly named Teach your Toddler to Swim, comprising six easy-to-follow lessons designed to give parents the confidence and expertise to be their child's personal water safety instructor.
“Swim lessons are not always a one size fits all. Kids learn differently and parents know exactly how to assist them,” says Rice, noting that her program puts a heavy emphasis on water safety. “We give our parents the opportunity to teach their kids one of life’s most important lessons. We want our community to be empowered and therefore safer in and around water.”
One of the most rewarding aspects of Rice's journey has been witnessing the positive impact her company has had on families through her clients’ stories.
“It has been incredible to see the impact social media has had,” she says. “Each week we share a water safety tip. It’s always our hope that it can reach as many families as possible. The more families that are educated, the safer our kids can be.”
BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONEAustin Kurtz has carved a unique path for himself in both law and fashion. For the attorney, comfort meets style, and his fashion choices are a testament to that ethos. He believes that one’s style is an integral part of their personal brand, and his reflects his personality perfectly – relaxed yet refined.
Kurtz’s style has evolved over the years. Initially, he felt compelled to conform to the traditional lawyer dress code. However, he gradually embraced his own take, giving it a fresh and distinctive twist.
His fashion journey is influenced by the years he spent living in Los Angeles, which left a significant mark on his style choices.
“Recently, lawyers have started wearing sneakers with suits, a trend I wholeheartedly support,” he says.
Among the treasures in his closet, Kurtz holds a black Rag & Bone heavy cardigan and his ostrich Lucchese boots in high regard. These items, acquired during his travels, hold sentimental value and are cherished pieces in his collection.
“On weekends, I embrace my role as a dad so I wear 5-inch shorts, a plain T-shirt, and a backward hat,” he says.
What are your favorite brands? Buck Mason has the premier neutral shirt; high quality and perfect fit. Bonobos if it needs a collar or is more formal.
What are your favorite colors and trends to wear? Colors are neutrals for sure. Black and gray regularly. I am a fan of the world accepting men’s shorts should be above the knee again. The early 2000s were a trying time for men’s short length. It’s hot in Arizona – I don’t need half pants.
How does your career influence your style? My career forces me to find ways to class up my love for casual fashion, but also gives me the benefit of subtle fashion risks to be seen as statements.
Hypnotherapist Kira Evenson’s personal style is a delightful blend of sophistication and relaxation, and can be summed up in two words: Boho chic.
“I embrace timeless elegance without sacrificing comfort,” she says.
One of the driving forces behind Evenson’s style evolution is her sister-inlaw, Kristen Greven, a celebrity stylist.
Evenson’s wardrobe boasts pieces from iconic fashion brands, including Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent, Free People, and ASOS. Her love for these brands stems from their commitment to unique designs and high-quality pieces.
“In the age of social media, fashion inspiration is just a click away,” says Evenson, who is an avid follower of fashion trends and stylish individuals on platforms like Instagram.
Her wardrobe seamlessly transitions from workdays to weekends. For the office, she opts for items like a white dress paired with a blazer. On evenings out, she can typically be found in a bold dress and high heels. For brunch or shopping with friends, a floral maxi dress adorned with fine jewelry takes center stage.
What are your favorite colors and prints to wear? White, turquoise, and red, reflecting my love for solid colors with occasional pops of vibrant shades. I tend to gravitate toward florals and Native American patterns, adding a touch of the bohemian spirit.
What is your must-have fashion item? Fine jewelry and a matching handbag are essential. My background in the jewelry industry has instilled a deep appreciation for exquisite accessories. These items not only elevate outfits but also hold sentimental value.
What sets your style apart? My love for unique, one-of-a-kind pieces that reflect my personality. My fashion choices are a form of self-expression, and I believe that when you feel beautiful and confident, you can accomplish anything!
W Scottsdale and The Modern Day Wife hosted this annual speaker series in honor of Women’s Equality Day
BY BEVERLY SHUMWAYFresh Start Auxiliary Board’s sixth annual fashion show and luncheon fundraiser took place at Chateau Luxe
BY BEVERLY SHUMWAYCarolyn Likas grew up in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, a small town nestled along Lake Michigan just south of Green Bay.
“Though certainly not the norm for the area, my cousin and I were enamored with the idea of horseback riding, eventually begging our parents for riding lessons until they caved,” Likas says. “Through trial and error, we eventually built up enough skill to show at some local events, and thanks to my parents, we found an experienced trainer who really refined my skills.”
While still a teen, Likas started competing as a rider, eventually making a name for herself around the globe by winning multiple Appaloosa World Championships.
“When it was time for college, I was accepted to University of Colorado Boulder, where I divided my time between studying toward a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in advertising, a second major in history, and competing on the school’s equestrian team,” says Likas, adding her specific focus on the team was reining, a type of equestrian competition where the rider and horse execute a precise pattern of maneuvers meant to mimic the behaviors and skills a horse would need on a cattle ranch in the American West.
While college graduation usually means the end of athletic competition for most, for Likas – who graduated in 2013 – it was only the beginning.
“Degree in hand, I moved to Denver. In addition to getting my start in business, friends got me interested in foxhunting, and by 2015 I was a member of the Arapahoe Hunt Club,” she says.
Within her first year, she earned her buttons, a recognition of being a good member. Two years later, after establishing herself through consistency and volunteer positions, Likas earned her colors, an honor within the hunting team.
“One important clarification between our club and others is that we do not hunt foxes, instead following tradition and watching the hounds work to follow a scent as we ride along on horseback seeking out coyotes,” Likas says. “In addition to allowing me to continue my passion for riding,
I love the comradery of the club and all of the traditions that we follow as well as the diversity of our group all coming together for a common goal.”
She also loves the club because it led her to a deep friendship with the Schmeits family, who, in addition to hunting, are all avid polo players. The family introduced her to the sport.
“Their son Vinny, who is one of my dearest friends today, even played in U.S. Open Polo Championship, so the introduction to the sport was on the grandest of scales,” Likas says. “With their mentorship, by 2017 I was playing with the Denver Polo Club, which is incredible for beginners as they make it fun and accessible for all levels of riders by offering coaching leagues and horse rentals for individuals like me who did not at the time have horses or a family involved in the sport.”
Likas’ passion for polo soon led to her leasing and then buying her own horse. She also transitioned to playing on grass, which is faster and on a larger field. Opportunities to play at the gorgeous Aspen Valley Polo Club with some of the best pros in the world as well as in tournaments in Argentina and Jamaica, among others, soon followed as well.
“For me, it was a thrill to participate in a sport while riding that was not subjectively judged like most of what I had done prior. Being on a team after competing in individual events for so long was also a joy,” she says.
According to Likas, most people who are not involved in the sport do not realize that in polo it is common to play with different people every tournament or practice, or that much of polo is “mixed,” meaning men and women are playing on the same teams with each other, two other reasons she fell in love with it.
During most games, Likas plays at the 1 or 2 position. “As a 1 or 2 on offense, I go up front and try to get open for passes to try to move the ball down the field. Even on offense, however, I often have more of a defensive mind, where I will try to make a block for my teammates to take the ball and follow them up for support,” she says.
Speaking of support, Likas herself needed it in more recent years.
“In 2021 I had a fall that caused a herniated disc. While having it surgically removed, the doctors discovered I also had a degenerative spine disorder, which means I do not have enough the cushion between lower discs in my back,” she says. “Given the rigors of practice, playing, and traveling, my doctors urged me to step back from my usual polo schedule – a full season – for my long-term health, and as much as I hated it, it was the right decision.”
The aggressive nature of the sport and the quick stops simply put too much pressure on her back, so to fulfill her passion for horses, Likas switched primarily to jumping, which is easier on her body. She also took up shorter polo competitions versus full seasons, most often playing in women’s tournaments.
“Surgery alone isn't the only reason I stopped playing full time,” Likas says. “Polo is a complete lifestyle and to do it properly it requires a lot of dedication of both time and resources, at this point in my life and career I just couldn't maintain a full schedule but am so grateful that I am still able to participate when opportunities arise.”
Today, Likas also works in sales and distribution of Centron fuel additive, which reduces emissions on a global scale.
Likas is especially excited to take part in one polo event in particular – The 12th Annual Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships: Presented by Talking Stick Resort. Set to take place at WestWorld of Scottsdale on Saturday, Nov. 4, the 2023 Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships marks Likas’ second time taking part in the event, with her first time being in 2020.
“The 2023 lineup includes the polo teams from Texas, Wales, New Orleans, Pride USA, Aspen Valley, two teams from Arizona, and the USA’s Women’s All-Star team, for which I will be playing,” Likas says.
Gates open at 9:45 a.m. with a matchup between the Texas Polo ClubGarland and Pride USA, and then Likas’
all-star team will take the field at 12:15 p.m. for a battle of the sexes match with the Arizona Polo Club. Following Likas’ match, the undefeated Bentley Scottsdale’s Aspen Valley Polo Team will go head-to-head against the Wales Polo Team from Great Britain. Aspen Valley returns having won an unprecedented seven Scottsdale titles. Then in the final matchup, the North Scottsdale Polo Club will deliver another outstanding match against New Orleans Polo Club.
The day of polo will be complemented
by nonstop events, including a sunset concert akin to the Waste Management Phoenix Open Birds Nest, a Polo Day Club furnished by Riot House, a pizza disco hosted by Grimaldi’s, a wine tasting experience, the Canine Couture Fashion Show by Lugari Pet Salon, The World’s Longest Catwalk Fashion Show produced by Phoenix Fashion Week, the Million Dollar Mingle organized by former NFL star AC Caswell, and much more.

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ PHOTOS BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONEVictoria Litchford loves a good story.
“My mom is a writer, which inspired me to put pen to paper at a young age as well,” says Litchford, who is an Arizona native and grew up writing short horror stories (her favorite genre) in her hometown of Glendale.
Litchford’s cocktail story began upon her graduation from Cactus High School in 2014 when she got a job as a hostess at the Peoria location of P.F. Chang’s.
“The host stand was near the bar, and I would spend countless hours watching the team make drinks, asking them about the bitters, garnishes, and syrups they were using for each drink and why,” Litchford says. “For the next three years, I worked my way up and at 21 got behind the bar.”
The role taught her the basics of flavor profiles and spirits. While there, Litchford earned a reputation for creative flair.
“Given we were part of a large corporation, I could not technically create cocktails for the menu, so it became customary for regulars to ask me to surprise them with a recipe off the menu of my own creation,” Litchford says. “A thrill, I began to feel that making drinks was an extension of my writing, both art in different forms.”
Ready to spread her wings, Litchford left P.F. Chang’s in 2021, taking on some management and serving roles for events and hospitality groups before coming across an opening for a lead bartender at Lon’s at The Hermosa Inn (www.hermosainn.com) last year, earning the role and a new mentor in Jon Dils, the restaurant’s food and beverage director.
“Lon’s has been a college-level course on pairing drinks with fine dining,” says Litchford, who got her first signature cocktail, Cowboy’s Dream, on a seasonal menu earlier this year.
Looking to the fall, Litchford is playing with apple, vanilla and homemade spiced syrups. She also has eyes to compete in her first cocktail competition and is currently journaling about her recipe development, with the dream of publishing a book on the stories behind her recipes.
Before becoming one of the Valley’s most talented bartenders, Kenny Hansen was one of its most talented young pitchers, despite being born with a heart requiring open-heart surgery at just two days old.
“I played competitive baseball throughout my youth and in high school, with eyes to continue in college,” Hansen says. “However, during the sports physical before my senior year, the doctor discovered a heart murmur that had me back at the cardiologist, eventually leading to a second open-heart surgery.”
The surgery was a success, but the recovery time effectively ended Hansen’s baseball career.
“Thankfully, I found a new passion thanks to a high school hospitality elective,” he says. “My family was always entertaining, and the class helped put the puzzle pieces together for me that I could entertain like them at the professional level.”
Upon graduating Barry Goldwater High School in 2004, Hansen enrolled in the hospitality program at Scottsdale Community College, which required him to have a role in the industry for college credit.
“I earned an entry-level job at Desert Mountain Country Club and was behind the bar by 19, earning the full-time bartending gig by 21,” says Hansen, adding he met his future wife when the two worked together at the club.
Hansen then moved on to Sapporo, where he added flair to his repertoire and helped open Blanco Cocina + Cantina at Biltmore Fashion Park before earning a spot on the mixology team at Bourbon Steak at Fairmont Scottsdale Princess (www.scottsdaleprincess.com) in 2014. “The past 10 years have been a whirlwind. Between all of the resort’s special events, serving as hosts during the WM Phoenix Open, and our nightly service, we fire on all cylinders at all times,” says Hansen, who was named bar manager in 2018.
For the fall, Hansen has big plans to release cocktails with hand-selected barrels of proprietary spirits. He will also unveil a new season of their two cocktails menus, one with classics and the other with more rebellious options, as well as seasonal offerings in time for Christmas at the Princess.
Richie Moe’s drinks are explosive, which is fitting given his initial career plans.
“Though my family is in the restaurant business, I grew up an aspiring chemist and dreamt of working in movie pyrotechnics,” he says.
Moe moved to Arizona after high school with his family, getting a job at the Black-eyed Pea as a stopgap.
“I thought I would work in hospitality for a year or two, and that was almost 30 years ago,” Moe says.
Moe soon moved on to Roy’s in central Scottsdale, and then became one of the first bartenders at Cowboy Ciao when it opened in 1997.
“The local cocktail culture was in its infancy,” he says. “I was able to build something from a blank canvas, experimenting like a chemist, but with flavor profiles in a shaker rather than combustibles in a beaker.”
Over the next 20 years, Moe would innovate his way across Arizona, leading bars at Citizen Public House, The Gladly, Blue Note Cellars, Binkley’s, and Bourbon & Bones, among others. He also launched Mixing Moe, a national cocktail consulting business.
Then, in 2019, Moe almost lost it all. “I was leading the cocktail program Bourbon & Bones, and the consulting business was booming. And then I got hit by a car,” he says.
The accident broke Moe’s back, leaving him in a turtle shell-shaped cast for nine months. During his recovery, COVID-19 hit. Initially undeterred, Moe opened a restaurant and speakeasy – Character and Alias, respectively – in 2021, but the pandemic proved too mighty an adversary.
“After that, I focused on consulting, but the travel was rough. There was a buzz about Arboleda, so earlier this year I met with their leadership, initially thinking I would work there part time so I could be home more,” Moe says. “We had chemistry instantaneously, and I surprised myself by accepting a lead bartender role.”
His mission at Arboleda (www.arboledaaz. com) is to eschew saccharine-sweet and premade mixers, and instead let cutting-edge spirits, foams, and organic garnishes shine across the board.
Leading the bar at one of the nation’s most prestigious resort restaurants keeps Abby Kate Larson busy, and she would not have it any other way.
In her hometown of Minneapolis, Larson busied herself with choir, swim team and school plays while in high school, yet still tried to persuade her parents that she could also carve out time for a job.
“The idea of earning my own money sounded so grown-up,” Larson says. “It took some convincing, but eventually my parents relented and said I could get a part-time job.”
Before they could change their minds, Larson snapped up a job on a large charter boat that gave cruise tours of Lake Minnetonka. When she turned 18, they put her behind the bar.
“The first classic cocktail I made was a Manhattan. The guest coached me through it, and it turned out delicious – or so he said,” Larson says. “I was hooked on cocktails from that moment on.”
Larson continued working in hospitality after high school while studying American Sign Language (ASL) at St. Catherine University. Upon graduation, she excelled as an interpreter, but continued to also work behind the bar.
“In 2017, I finished an especially late shift during winter in Minneapolis and had to handdig my car out from under 6 feet of snow. Right then, I made the decision to move to Arizona to work in its cocktail industry, which had national buzz, and pulled the trigger before year’s end,” Larson says.
She quickly got scooped up by J&G Steakhouse (www.jgsteakhousescottsdale. com), where local bartending pioneer Robert Porter became her mentor. A quick study, soon Larson was suggesting her own recipes, impressing Porter and patrons alike. In 2021, Larson was named J&G’s head bartender.
“My fall 2023 menu will be my biggest and most ambitious yet, really pushing the envelope where I can. Expect roots, spices, tea infusions, chocolate, and more,” says Larson, noting she is still fluent in ASL and uses it with guests on a regular basis.
Maxwell Berlin is a student of the world.
“While I am a Mesa native, my parents are from New York and avid travelers and gourmands, two traits they passed to me,” says Berlin, whose first word was “tako,” which is Japanese for “octopus.” The word was said often as his family frequented authentic Asian restaurants when he was a baby, and chefs would cut the tentacles off the octopus before serving to him to prevent choking.
Berlin became a barista in high school, which led to the study of coffee beans and tea. From there, he studied geography, mapping, and at least five languages at Arizona State University, as well as beer and wine in his downtime, and eventually spirits. Since then, over the past 20 years, he has become a coffee master, sommelier, and cicerone while working behind the bars across the Valley at My Wine Cellar, Binkley’s family of venues, Crudo, Virtu Honest Craft, and Glai Baan, which earned him a James Beard nomination for his cocktail program.
“My inspiration since even back in my barista days was telling the story of a particular region through a cocktail, using flavor profiles, aromatics, native ingredients, and technique to shine a light on cultures from around the world,” Berlin says.
This year has been one of the biggest in Berlin’s career. Not only did he serve as one of the national Chilled 100 Spirits Awards judges, but he also opened two cocktail concepts in downtown Phoenix, Quartz and The Cave.
Quartz (www.quartzphx.com) celebrates all things gemstones on its menu. “There are 12 core cocktails, one for each birthstone but each inspired by far more than just the gems’ colors or months,” Berlin says. “For example, our Dripping Diamonds is made with ingredients noted in The Beatles classic Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, and Ruby is a drinkable love letter to the peoples of Myanmar, where the most coveted rubies in the world are sourced.”
The Cave is located within Quartz and takes its inspiration from deserts around the world.

Ballet Arizona’s debut event gives guests a close-up look at intricate costumes
BY ELIZABETH LIBERATOREWhat: Fashion & Fizz
When: Oct. 14, 4-7 p.m.
Where: Ballet Arizona, 2835 E. Washington Street, Phoenix
Tickets: GA, $50; VIP, $80; premium VIP, $125
Information: www. balletaz.org.
People flock to Ballet Arizona year-round to watch magnificently trained athletes convey emotion-evoking stories through movement. Adding to the experience are the meticulously crafted and elaborate costumes (with all that sparkle!), which Ballet Arizona dancers so effortlessly pirouette and leap in on stage. With scenes and performers moving fast, sometimes it’s hard for the audience to get a good look at each piece of wearable art. That is, until now.
The inaugural Fashion & Fizz event will give ballet fans an opportunity to see a range of costumes – from classical tutus to contemporary ensembles – up close and personal on the runway.
“Ballet is an all-encompassing art form that consists not only of dance and music,
but also of costume and set design,” says Anya Borshch, chair of Ballet Arizona’s Contemporary Council. “When people have the chance to see the costumes close up, they witness their beauty and intricacy and can gain an understanding of how much effort, hard work and attention to detail goes into creating everything you see on stage.”
The best part of the showcase: Ballet Arizona company dancers will model the looks. One star to look out for is Eastlyn Jensen, whose favorite costume is from The Firebird
“Monsters from The Firebird are my absolute favorite costumes because they are fashionable and highly comfortable,” Jensen says. “Fabio Toblini, the costume designer of this piece, made this costume
look as if it is from a science-fiction movie by using fake leather to give the appeal of metallic dresses.”
In addition to mingling with other ballet fans, attendees will have the unique opportunity to meet and talk to the company’s dancers before the fashion show at the cocktail hour. There will also be a chance to win incredible raffle prizes, including staycations at local resorts, restaurant vouchers, and more. And for ballet superfans, the VIP experience includes hors d’oeuvres from Clever Koi, a behind-the-scenes tour of the costume shop, a special lounge, and more.
Proceeds from Fashion & Fizz will benefit Ballet Arizona, allowing more costumes, sets, musical scores, and performances to take centerstage in the Valley.

On Nov. 3 and 4, Dreamy Draw Music Festival will make its debut at Scottsdale Civic Center.
The festival will have three stages in which over 25 artists will perform, including headlining artists Midland and Lord Huron. The rest of the lineup is made up of indie bands and artists of the country, bluegrass, folk, roots, and Americana variety. There will also be immersive art experiences, and local and national food and retail vendors highlighting iconic Americana, renegade, and outlaw country themes. “Dreamy Draw Music Festival is inspired by the idyllic culture and music of the American Southwest,” says John Rieble, cofounder of Dreamy Draw Music Festival. “The festival strives to provide a homecoming for the dynamic Americana cultural movement which has deep roots in the American Southwest.”
Rieble and RJ Largay, cofounders of the event, both share a deep love for festivals and music as a whole, dreaming up the event to embrace the authentic spirit of Southwestern culture and in honor of outlaw country and Americana music. The name of the festival was a no-brainer for the founders as Dreamy Draw is an arduous desert landscape consisting of sprawling hills, steep mountains, and secluded valleys within the Phoenix Mountain Preserves.
“The beautiful and serene landscape that is Dreamy Draw naturally lends itself to the music and the arts. On crisp, vibrant, Arizona mornings, hiking within the Dreamy Draw mountains you can hear the desert playing its own unique melody,” Largay says. “Our mission is to have Dreamy Draw Music Festival reflect its namesake and encapsulate the vastness and uniqueness of the Dreamy Draw region through music, art, friendship, and experience.”
The setting will fully encapsulate this idea, as it will be hosted fully outdoors at the newly renovated Scottsdale Civic Center. In addition to music, there will also be art on display, an artisan marketplace,
and food and beverage for purchase.
“Be ready to immerse yourself in a vibrant world of creativity as you explore captivating art activations throughout the festival grounds,” Rieble says. “From largerthan-life sculptures to interactive installations, each piece tells a story and invites you to be a part of the artistic narrative.”
Attendees will also be able to browse the Dreamy Trading post, where local artisans and vendors will display and sell items ranging from intricately handcrafted jewelry to captivating paintings and one-of-a-kind fashion pieces.
Local food influencer Diana Brandt (@azfoodie) will be curating the VIP menu and food court. Guests can expect to savor the flavors of Southwestern Arizona with a fusion of regional and international cuisines, from mouthwatering barbecue and savory tacos to gourmet burgers and vegan delights.

Artistic inspiration comes in many forms. For William Daggett, it’s his connection to nature, a childhood love of woodworking, and an open and creative spirit.
As a boy growing up in the Old Town Scottsdale area, Daggett would pass by the woodcarving studio of Dee Flagg. Every day, on the way to and from school, he would stop into the studio to watch Flagg create his intricate, life-sized carvings of Old West characters. Daggett worked with wood for school projects and pursued creative endeavors as he grew into adulthood. He worked as a developer, designing and building custom homes. He’s built furniture, created custom stained-glass windows and even used a chainsaw to carve a 6-foot-tall bear. He also did some cottonwood bark carvings.
But it wasn’t until about 12 years ago when Daggett was drawn to a twisted piece of juniper that he became serious about his craft. Where some saw a broken, dying branch, he saw a work of art waiting to be revealed. “With that first piece, I could see a bird inside of the wood,” he says. “So I carved until I created what I saw.”
Daggett’s ability to see what’s within a snag of juniper comes from an instinct, a feeling, and an ability to draw out what’s inside. He uses hand tools to chisel, grind, sand, polish, and oil the piece until its true form and essence are revealed. “When I’m out looking for a limb, I can identify immediately when I find the right one. I see what’s hiding inside, sometimes right away and sometimes after sitting with it for a while,” he says. “When I start a new sculpture, I spend time with the piece of wood. I try to open up to its essence until I get a sense of what it’s saying, or how it wants to express itself.”
For the past seven years, Daggett has had a residency with the Arizona Fine Art Expo. His favorite part of the artistic process is seeing the emotional response that people have to his work.
While woodcarving has been highly rewarding for Daggett, a recent diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease has necessitated a pivot in his artistic endeavors. Some special pieces have been cast in bronze, and his newest collection will be set in 18-karat gold. This new work is literally setting a gold standard, taking his wood sculptures to the highest level and imbuing them with new energy.
Using his imagination and instinct, Daggett is able to draw new life from weathered, twisted wood. Likewise, his creative spirit has been a salve of sorts, keeping his symptoms at bay, and turning the hardship and devastation of a diagnosis into an evolution of his artistic process.
From raw wood to hand-tooled works of art to gold-cast sculptures, the one-of-a-kind pieces create an emotional connection to nature, manifested from the spirit of the artist himself. Learn more at www.woodwhisperings.com.

There she was—breast cancer patient Onjalai Brown running the bases before a Major League Baseball spring training game. Wearing a pink tutu and her trademark radiant smile, Brown gave players lining the baselines enthusiastic high fives as she passed them during her home run trot. When she reached home plate, Brown celebrated with arms raised, the symbolic end to a cancer journey she almost didn’t complete.
After Brown finished her Home Run for Life trot and was done waving at the cheering fans at Goodyear Ballpark in Arizona, she was reunited with Sagun Shrestha, M.D., Medical Director of Medical Oncology, City of Hope Phoenix. While Dr. Shrestha did not run the bases with Brown that day, she was at her patient’s side during much of her cancer treatment after Brown had sought a second opinion at City of Hope.
“For her to see me … in a tutu running around the bases—that let her know how well I was doing,” Brown said. “And the way she greeted me— she just said, ‘I’m so proud of you, and you look wonderful.’”
Diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma in 2021 after finding a lump in her breast during a selfexam, Brown was initially treated at a medical center in Texas, where her
sister also underwent breast cancer treatment. While she said her sister received good care, she eventually succumbed to her disease. Brown felt she needed to look elsewhere. She eventually made the courageous decision to go beyond the familiar and past the borders of her city and state and seek a second opinion more than 1,000 miles away at City of Hope Phoenix.
“I went for a consultation and fell in love with it,” Brown said. “It’s a night-and-day difference from other medical institutions. From pickup at the airport by the transportation team to the initial consultation with the physician, it was an incredible experience, and I decided to treat there, even if it meant traveling back and forth from the Dallas area.”
You might think that after getting a diagnosis as serious as cancer, seeking a second opinion would be a no-brainer. But research shows otherwise.
A Gallup poll showed that 70 percent of Americans feel confident enough in their doctor not to seek another opinion. And while your doctors work hard to foster trusting relationships with their patients, it may also be in your best interest to
seek out a second opinion that may result in new diagnoses and treatment options.
“I always encourage our patients when they come here for the first time or, even if they’re undergoing treatment, to seek a second opinion,” Dr. Shrestha said. “In terms of someone getting diagnosed, it’s always a good idea to have a second opinion.”
Another study showed that, after their cases were reviewed by a multidisciplinary tumor board, 43 percent of breast cancer patients who sought a second opinion received a different diagnosis. In many cases, the staging of the cancer also changed, which often affects treatment options.
“Sometimes, when patients come in for a second opinion, we tell them they’re on the right track, and it encourages them to continue treatment,” Dr. Shrestha said. “And sometimes, we find something different, and we say, ‘OK, that’s not the correct diagnosis, and we need to do something different.’”
If you’ve been diagnosed with cancer or and want to get a second opinion of your diagnosis or treatment options, call us or chat online with a member of our team.

2014 Audi RS e-tron GT
Developed in collaboration with its Porsche sibling, the fully electric RS e-Tron GT shares its platform with the first Porsche EV, the 600-horsepower Taycan.
The four-door, four passenger Grand Tourismo wields a torrid 590 horsepower (637 in Boost launch mode), Audi’s Quattro all-wheel drive, and 21-inch Goodyear Eagle F1s summer/ sport tires. Audi’s first electric sedan takes honors as the most powerful Audi ever built, grabbing that award from the heralded V-10-powered R8. Zero to 60 mph is absolutely hypersonic – acceleration that must be experienced to be believed.
Like the Taycan, the RS has the same twospeed gear box transmission to maximize acceleration from a standing start, but also increases efficiency at higher speeds. Both have a standard 93-kilowatt-hour battery, but acceleration is just a small part of this vehicle’s crushing attraction. The RS has more of a rapid grand tourer swagger than a four-door sports car – definitely fast, but not Taycan or Tesla Plaid fast. It can cruise the Beeline countryside or Scottsdale cityscapes with equal equanimity in cosseting luxury with an excessive tour de force and state-of-the-art technology.
Inside, there’s little left to want or desire, including driver and passenger comfort with a range of electrical seat and steering wheel adjustments to accommodate nearly every human body size. Seats are slim and surprisingly close to the floor, minimizing any sense of vehicle body roll in aggressive cornering. The RS e-Tron’s suspension is nothing short of amazing. It’s an every day vehicle that one would never get tired of driving.
But with all this goodness, there are a few compromises. To start, there is a “frunk” under the hood with a very small amount of cargo space, and the cargo area in the rear of the vehicle is a similar size to a small hatchback. Rear seat room for two isn’t generous, but the panoramic glass roof helps eliminate a sense of claustrophobia. Finally, the fully charged driving range is a disappointing 249 miles. The good news is the RS comes with a built-in fast-charging capability up to 270-kW public charging, meaning drivers can plug in to get approximately 120 additional miles in 10 minutes, or 180 miles in 22 minutes at Electrify America stations with two years of unlimited free charging.

Forget the Hamptons. Each fall, millions of those in the know flock to the Finger Lakes region of New York to enjoy wineries, breweries, waterfalls, and other outdoor recreation as the leaves begin to change and crispness creeps into the air.
If unfamiliar with the area, there are 11 lakes in upstate New York between Syracuse, Rochester, and Elmira-Corning that, due to the way in which glaciers helped carve them out more than two million years ago during the last ice age, together resemble fingers or a handprint.
Canandaigua Lake is the fourth largest of the Finger Lakes, running from the city of Canandaigua to Naples. Its name is said to be derived from the Native American word “kanandarque,” meaning “chosen spot.” While a marvel throughout the year, autumn is especially magical in this region, thanks in great part to The Lake House on Canandaigua.
Named among the 10 Best Resorts in New York State by Travel + Leisure, the premier lakefront luxury property features 124 well-appointed rooms and suites, each offering pristine views of the water, rain showers,
Additional highlights inlcude thrice weekly whiskey tastings; burning wood art exhibitions; and the Willowbrook Spa at The Lake House, which has a host of body treatments, skin rituals, and massages inspired by the healing power of nature. Of note are the spa’s restorative barrel saunas, which are located near an idyllic sunroom. Shaped like actual barrels but large enough for multiple guests, the sauna experience offers a view of a babbling brook and the native plant garden and includes a soothing face mask and bathing mist.
Guests who reserve a visit now through Dec. 15 are eligible for 30% off the best available rate using the code “SECRET” during booking. The code also unlocks several extras, including a bottle of wine upon arrival and a s’mores kit to roast marshmallows at one of the toasty firepits.

There are views, and then there are views, and this property truly offers some of the best there are of sunsets and terrific mountain vistas in the Valley.
The 4,082-square-foot home is located in Apache Peak Village at Desert Mountain, and features four bedrooms and four bathrooms.
From the outside, the home is impressive while still allowing its desert surroundings to shine. One step through the carved wood front door leads guests into a fully updated space showcasing a soft, contemporary design. Though light and bright, clean and airy, the aesthetic is also warm thanks to wood elements like wood ceiling beams, wood floors and wood accents on fireplaces.
The unparalleled views can be seen from almost every room in the home, and are especially on display in the main living areas. Just past the entry is the formal living room, featuring a built-in wet bar, a gas fireplace and a wall of windows. The open-concept kitchen – which overlooks the family room, informal dining area and backyard – features an island, a pantry with a wine cooler, a gas range, and double ovens. The family room showcases a second gas fireplace and more views. The main living area is rounded out by a formal dining room off the main entry.
The primary suite features built-in shelves, patio access, and a spa-like bathroom with both a walk-in shower and a soaking tub.
The backyard gives dwellers the opportunity to fully soak in all the unique views, with a covered patio, a built-in barbecue, and a fireplace. There is a contemporary pool and spa, with room for patio chairs around. The pool and spa are surrounded by desert foliage.
Additional highlights include a two-car, air-conditioned garage, and a workshop or storage area. A Desert Mountain golf membership is available from the seller.

Wander through the Washington wine country that is quickly becoming an epicurean empire
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ PHOTOS BY WOODINVILLE WINE COUNTRYCertainly, Washington is known for its rain. But over the past 10 years, its fast-growing region of Woodinville has earned the nickname “The Place Where Washington Pours,” and it has nothing to do with the wet stuff falling from the sky.
Located less than an hour northeast of Seattle, Woodinville is currently home to more top-rated wineries (90 points and above) than any other region in the world. Deliciously diverse, it is also among the preeminent places for distillers and brewers to set up shop and hidden gem spots for culinary exploration.
Currently, there are more than 120 wineries in the area, ranging from urban tasting rooms to full-scale vineyards. In fact, 19 of the state’s 20 American Viticulture Areas (AVAs) are represented in Woodinville, including the state’s oldest and most acclaimed winery: Chateau Ste. Michelle.
With roots dating back more than 100 years, Chateau Ste. Michelle is as much a historic landmark as it is a premium winery. All of the brand’s white wines are made on the Woodinville property, a glorious site to see during one of the many tours offered there, and all of the reds are made at its Canoe Ridge Estate winery in eastern Washington, but of course all varietals are available to visitors. There are more than a dozen tasting experiences offered, notably a “winemaker for a day” blending class and twilight tasting opportunities on Friday and Saturday when the chateau stays open late.
Other must-visit wineries while in the area include Bayernmoor Cellars, Patterson Cellars, DeLille Cellars, Novelty Hill-Januik Winery, and JM Cellars. Bayernmoor features estategrown pinot noir and wines sourced from top vineyards throughout Washington and can pair flights or glasses with seasonal small bites, while Patterson has mastered New World winemaking and a tasting experience that pairs four of its wines with a signature pie from the nearby Vivi Pizzeria.
Choose from two DeLille locations in Woodinville. Regarded as a top Bordeaux-inspired producer in the region, thanks to on-site culinary operations, there are food and wine pairings as well as beer and cocktails guests may enjoy while visiting. Novelty Hill and Januik are two independent wineries that share a destination tasting room in the heart of Woodinville. The partners will soon relaunch their seasonal art of food and wine experience, which explores farm-to-table delicacies, along with their limited-release varietals. And at family-owned JM Cellars, the Woodinville property is known as Bramble Bump and has a 7-acre arboretum on-site to enjoy right along with the wines.
The vast acres of vino in every direction, of course, are complemented by a vibrant community of award-winning restaurants, farms, microbrewers, and distilleries.
For a once-in-a-bite-time experience, make reservations early in the planning process for at The Herbfarm, a five-diamond restaurant tucked inside a quaint cottage with nine-course seasonal tasting menus using ingredients from the surrounding farm and partners across the Pacific Northwest. Similarly impressive are Barking Frog at the Willows Lodge, which blends farm-to-table ingredients and foraged items with wines from around the world; Heritage Restaurant and Bar, a buzzy spot that although casual is serious about making mind-blowing dishes and cocktails using cutting-edge techniques; and Seastar Restaurant & Raw Bar, a high-end seafood hotspot that has been lauded for more than 20 years by the likes of Wine Spectator, Food & Wine, and Sunset Magazine.
Woodinville is also home to a handful of working farms –notably 21 Acres and Off the Branch – that have cooking classes, tours, and artisanal markets available to guests most days of the year. Additionally, there are more than a dozen microbreweries and distilleries, including Sumerian Brewing Company, Locust Cider & Brewing, and Woodinville Whiskey Company. Each of the brewers and distillers is open for tasting, and some offer tours, including Woodinville Whiskey, which boasts a 1,320-gallon handmade pot more than 25 feet tall that produces up to seven barrels of whiskey per day.
If looking to explore the outdoors in Woodinville, access the Sammamish River Trail through several access points including Marymoor Park, Bothell Landing, and Blyth Park. Visit one of three botanical gardens in Kruckeberg Botanic Garden, Rhodoedron Park, or Bellevue Botanical Garden, or book a Kenmore Air seaplane, which on a clear day offers views of Mount Rainier.
While Seattle is nearby, consider staying directly in the Woodinville area as the options are opulent and ample, with the Willows Lodge and the Woodmark Hotel & Still Spa especially plush. Willows Lodge, a 2023 Travel + Leisure World’s Best Award winner, is set across five acres along the on the Sammamish River. A visual stunner with local artists on display at every turn, the resort’s front doors are made from old wine casks and the lodge is fashioned from Douglas fir timbers, while nearly all of its rooms and suites have views of its epic gardens. The Spa at Willows Lodge is a destination all its own with treatments using locally harvested ingredients as well as a relaxation room, hydrotherapy pool, and sauna. Woodmark, independently owned and operated, also boasts a beautiful recently renovated, full-service spa, two signature restaurants, and nearly two dozen luxury suites in addition to its traditional rooms, all set directly on the shores of Lake Washington. Both hotels offer a host of outdoor excursions and custom packages in addition to assistance with culinary adventures that will please even the pickiest of palates.

Have a taste for something that screams fall? Regional craft cideries are ready and waiting with apple-packed offerings for every palate. Here are some favorites.
The veteran-owned and family-operated taproom, founded by two brothers in Mesa, is a pioneer in both craft and canned ciders. Since its founding in 2017, the Cider Corps. brothers have put out more than 200 ciders, but this one stands out. Inspired by the refreshing notes of the classic Moscow mule cocktail, this dry cider pairs autumnal apple with crisp ginger spice and tart lime. 12-ounce draft, $7. www.cidercorpsaz.com.
Prickly Pom
Six Byrd Cider Company
This Arcadia taproom is dedicated to making complex craft ciders from simple, natural ingredients. It has three core ciders that never leave the menu, including this clean, tart beauty that includes slight notes of sweetness as well. It is made with apple, pomegranate and locally sourced Arizona prickly pear juice. 12-ounce draft, $8. www.sixbyrd.com.
Founded on a family farm just outside of Prescott, this cider maker is dedicated to seeking and preserving some of the world’s rarest apples. Serenade is made from golden delicious apples as well as also dolgo crab apples, which originated in Siberia in the 1800s and can withstand temperatures of -40 degrees. It is quite dry with flavors of tart apple and toasted oak. 10-ounce draft, $7.50. www. stoiccider.com.
Tomato Basil Cider
Bawker Bawker Cider House
In 2021, Bawker Bawker became Tucson’s first and only cidery, though its founder, Don Rubio, has been perfecting his brewing process for more than a decade. Each cider is gluten-free, sulfate-free,
and quite low on sugar. Of note is the Tomato Basil offering, which is made with unfiltered apple and tomato juices as well as whole basil leaves. It is surprisingly semisweet but then finishes with lovely savory notes. 16-ounce can, $7.25. www.bawkerbawker.com.
Blueberry Spaceship Box
Superstition Meadery
This institution has introduced over 300 unique meads and hard ciders since its inception in 2012, and was named the United States Small Business Administration National Small Business of the Year in 2019. Its signature cider, Blueberry Spaceship Box, has earned worldwide acclaim for its sweet and tart flavors through the zippy combination of apple and blueberry. 750-milliliter bottle, $19. www.superstitionmeadery.com.
John Palmer
Tin City Cider Co.
There is the Arnold Palmer, which is iced tea and lemonade. There is the John Daly, which is iced tea, lemonade and vodka. And then there is the John Palmer, which is apple cider fermented with black tea and lemons made at this Paso Robles craft cidery. Herbal and slightly sweet, the combination is a winner. 750-milliliter bottle, $25. www.tincitycider.com.
Jalapearno
Snow Capped Cider
The family behind this Coloradobased cidery began as apple orchard farmers more than a century ago. Today, overseeing 500 acres of orchards and vineyards, there are several canned options from the brand available in the Valley. That includes this golden goddess, which has a fruit nose but is perfeclty balanced by a jalapeno bite and then softened by the addition of pear. Six-pack, $12.99. www.snowcappedcider.com.
Roak Akor interprets classic Asian dishes in a sophisticated, decadent way, often using a robata grill. The grill is made from Japanese white oak, allowing it to burn with almost no smoke or flame while infusing an added depth of flavor into the foods being grilled. Among the restaurant’s robata staples is the delicate yet rich Yuzu Miso Marinated Black Cod ($40). The freshly sourced cod is first marinated in sake, Japanese cooking wine, ginger root, seeded serrano peppers, miso, sugar, and yuzu juice. The fish is then cooked on the robata and then quickly broiled until golden brown. It is wrapped in a Japanese magnolia and plated on a custom plank with pickled onions, additional marinade and black sesame seeds. Roka Akor, 7299 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; 480.306.8800; www.rokaakor.com.
Phoenix’s 32 Shea is known by many as a cozy coffee and sandwich shop. After the morning and lunch rush, however, the Valley staple transitions into an electric urban bar serving dinner with one of the cutest dog-friendly patios in town, complete with a secret garden, giant Buddha, and waterfall.
“Given our small design, we can be nimble with our cocktail program, using kitchen-made syrups, fresh garnishes, and rotating in seasonal specials with ease,” says Barry Merrill, mixologist at 32 Shea. “One of our favorite seasons to switch things up is autumn.”
Throughout the season, Merrill and his team are offering a Pumpkin Spice Espresso Martini ($16), among other specialties.
“The inspiration for the recipe came from two of our favorite ingredients from behind the coffee bar in the coffee beans we source from Matador Coffee in Flagstaff, and Barista 22 Pumpkin Pie Sauce, which we use in our pumpkin spice lattes,” Merrill says.
To create, the team first uses the beans to make two shots of espresso and then combines them in a shaker with the pumpkin sauce.
“We then add our house simple syrup and Stoli Vanil Vodka, which has beautiful notes of vanilla – of course – but also slight hints of creme anglaise, chocolate, and even a touch of buttery smoothness,” Merrill says.
The shaker is finished with Nola Coffee Liqueur, a few dashes of aromatic bitters and ice before getting a good shake.
“We strain into a martini glass and garnish with cinnamon and nutmeg as well as star anise, which come together to add an extra dimension of autumnal aromatics that perfectly complement the notes of espresso, chocolate, vanilla, and baking spices on the palate,” Merrill says.

Sam Frankel is the executive pastry chef of sophisticated steak and seafood restaurant Modern Oysterbar Chophouse, where she dreams up sweet treats to perfectly complete guests’ savory adventures.
Modern Oysterbar is a family affair. Tell us about that.
It is. My mother-in-law and father-in-law Cat and Randy Frankel are our owners and run day-to-day operations; my husband Dylan is our beverage director and a manager; and I head up our pastry kitchen.
What are some must-order desserts?
My Key lime pie has been on the menu since day one. It is an homage to Cat and Randy, who are from Florida, where Key lime pie is life. My personal favorites are the creme brulee and peanut butter fudge pie, which is a twist on a Frankel family recipe. I am also prepping my annual specialty pumpkin pie for the holidays.
What got you interested in pastry?
In my native Michigan, my sister got me a job in the kitchen at an assisted living center where she worked when I was in high school. Though a server and traditional cook, I fell in love with the art and science of baking almost immediately. After seven years there, in 2010 I moved to Arizona to study patisserie formally at Le Cordon Bleu.
How did Modern Oysterbar come to be?
I met Dylan at Zinc Bistro, where he was a manager and where I started my professional career and stayed nearly a decade. Cat and Randy also worked in leadership at Zinc and are decadeslong restaurant veterans who long dreamed of opening their own concept. One night, Cat and Randy laid out a road map to make it happen together while sitting at our kitchen table. By 2019, Modern Oysterbar was born in central Scottsdale. Barro’s Pizza also serves wings, salads, sandwiches, pasta, gluten-free pizza options, dessert, beer, and wine. The restaurants offer dine-in, take-out, delivery, online ordering, in-app ordering, and catering. Barro’s has several locations in Scottsdale and one in Cave Creek. www.barrospizza.com; $$

Have a taste for something new in the morning this fall? Look no further than one of south Scottsdale’s newest spots, The Eleanor.
The 4,000-square-foot indoor space, which is complemented by a 1,232-squarefoot patio, was developed by Clayton Companies and Aline Architecture Concepts. Visually, The Eleanor is meant to evoke a midcentury modern feel, making impressive use of the structural elements of the building, which dates back to 1966. The designers kept the historic low-profile roof, but vastly improved the building’s curb appeal by adding lava rocks and greenery to the front as well as chic garage doors to the patio. They also created a high wall with clerestory windows to the interior, which allows for ample natural. Light woods and retro colors are present in the tables, chairs, bar top, accents, and walls to keep to the midcentury aesthetic.
Executive chef and partner Kent Macauley leads the kitchen. A Valley native, Macaulay grew up in the neighborhood and got his culinary start at Randy’s Restaurant and then Nello’s, both just miles from The Eleanor, before attending Scottsdale
Current highlights from Macauley’s brunch menu include the breakfast hash ($15), which features braised short rib, fingerling potatoes, oven-roasted tomatoes, Brussels sprouts, arugula, an over easy egg, and parmesan cheese; the chorizo y papas burrito ($13), which pairs a warm flour tortilla with homemade chorizo sausage, house-cut fries, scrambled eggs, and Oaxacan cheese; and the churro French toast ($15), which is made using locally sourced Noble challah bread that has been stuffed with Nutella, dusted with cinnamon sugar, and finished with both maple butter and fresh whipped cream.
In addition to the eatery’s traditional brunch fare, there is also a grab-and-go space. For those who prefer something more lunch-inspired, a handful of dine-in and to-go items are available, including a chicken salad sandwich ($14) with chopped chicken breast, apples, celery, onions, white cheddar cheese, whole grain mustard yogurt dressing, and a spring mix; a beef po’boy ($17) with braised beef, gruyere cheese, pickled Fresno chili peppers, caramelized onions, roasted garlic mayo; and a pastrami sandwich ($16) with Napa-inspired coleslaw, house-cut fries, tomatoes, and mayo on a hoagie roll.
When it comes to drinks, the focus is on java with options running the gamut from drip and cold brew coffee to lattes and macchiatos. There are also several canned and bottled options including iced tea, pressed juices, Jones soda, and sparkling water in the grab-and-go area.
The Eleanor is open daily from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Eleanor, 3207 N. Hayden Road, Scottsdale; www.theeleanoraz.com; 480.687.9472.
