A CUT ABOVE

Isaac Jewelers makes its mark in its 15th year BY BRITTANY MARONEY

When you desire decadence, refinement and luxury, think no further then Isaac Jewelers. Whether you are seeking a custom-designed piece or a rare Smart Cut diamond, they not only hold the standard for incredible selection, they are the authority when it comes to an exclusively designed dream piece. Yet, it’s their personalized service, unique showroom and incredible staff that keeps Phoenicians coming back for more, year after year. It’s the sense of pride that they put into each piece that makes them unique and sought-after like no other jeweler in the Valley. “We are so fortunate because we get to experience all of the best moments of our customers’ lives and get to be part of some of their most personal experiences,” says Frank Isaac, owner of Isaac Jewelers. “It’s my sole desire that every customer will walk in with high expectations and walk out inspired by the personalized experience, amazing selection, and our unique approach to their individual piece. We understand they are investing in more than a ring or a watch. They are investing in a moment and in an experience. We are so proud that we can be a part of that.” Isaac’s unique approach also extends to the way the business operates and its foundation in the Scottsdale community. The company is familyowned, and Frank is a frequent guest on the showroom floor, greeting lifelong customers and, even more often, second and third generations that have bought his custom pieces. The company is also an active proponent for fundraising and philanthropy in the local community. Along with fundraisers for charities such as Child Crisis of Arizona, March of Dimes and the American Cancer Society, Isaac Jewelers also donates proceeds from summer sales to local veteran foundations.

Now, going on its 15th year as a pillar in the jewelry industry and the local community, Isaac Jewelers has a lot to celebrate. On March 24th, they will host an anniversary celebration, thanking their loyal fans and welcoming new customers into the Isaac family. The festivities will include a red carpet experience, craft cocktails, a DJ and models showcasing custom pieces from

Isaac Designs, ALOR and KC Designs. Frank Isaac and the rest of his experienced and knowledgeable staff will be on hand to share some of their most stunning pieces, along with their large variety of highly sought-after Smart Cut diamonds. Isaac Jewelers is located at Kierland Commons, 15044 N. Scottsdale Road; 480.941.9090; www.isaacjewelers.com.

Teenage Hair Loss – Helping Kids & Parents Find Their Answers

Our team has seen an ALARMING TREND of more and more teenagers experiencing substantial hair loss. Many families have used injections with good results – however, other families have struggled with finding a solution to aggressive alopecia & genetic hair loss. Before we were treating people in their 60s-70s, now we are seeing kids and teens with various forms of hair loss. For many families, we are their last resort in finding a successful treatment.

“My 13-Year-Old Daughter Has Extreme Patchy Baldness”

“I first noticed my daughter’s hair loss as a small bald spot that quickly grew back. About a year after the first bald spot, she started to loose hair aggressively. As a mother it made me feel helpless, I didn’t know what was causing such significant hair loss in my child. It broke my heart. During that time I was hoping it would grow back on its own and I purchased her a stylish fedora to help conceal the hair loss. At school children didn’t understand what alopecia was. I noticed a change in her self-esteem. She went from being open and outgoing, to avoiding social situations and at times depressed. I took her to a dermatologist, who didn’t provide much help or support. I looked into many options including a medicated topical, ultraviolet laser (but the cost and time were too much), many wig stores, and a beautiful custom wig. Then we found National Hair Loss through social media on Instagram (@nhla_hairLoss). National Hair Loss offered a custom Hair Recovery Program based on my daughter’s alopecia. Many of their treatments I had already been researching, which made me feel comfortable in my decision to move forward. Shortly after beginning her program we really started seeing hair regrowth results! Her hair continues to grow in. She is much happier and is loving being able to enjoy all the girl things we do as teens. She is able to express herself through her hair, coloring it, straightening it, and styling it. All things she has missed out on for the last 4 years.” (Mother of National Hair Loss Patient)

“Our Son Finally Has His Hair Back”

Another success story is working with a 14-year-old teenager, his parents describe him as outgoing and a talented athlete. He has been experiencing episodes of Alopecia Areata, causing more than half of his hair to fall out. The excessive hair loss and trouble finding the answer to his alopecia was causing distress to him and his family. As parents, they noticed the hair loss was distracting him. Under the care of National Hair Loss, they obtained a Hair Analysis Scan of a list of foods and drinks their son was intolerant too. This was their guide to the items he needed to stay clear of in order to reduce his internal inflammation and boost his immune system. We provided the family with game plan and an outline to follow, including additional National Hair Loss treatments to stimulate hair growth. Once their son started eliminating the intolerances, he was able to grow back hair in the balding patches. It was incredible seeing his hair growth; the rewarding part was hearing about the positive changes their son was making.

Parisian

Perfection A one-on-one interview with renowned French stylist Jo, owner of Jo Paris Salon

J

o Paris Salon features the lavish, luxurious surroundings you would expect in any upscale locale, but there’s a crucial difference within the welcoming atmosphere, suffused with a familial warmth that puts you instantly at ease. And the differences don’t end there; in every facet of the experience is the evidence of a deeply connected team, each member striving to provide premium-quality services and unforgettably gracious treatment. The salon is the kind of place its owner and namesake, Jo, had always dreamed of opening. With an innate sense of beauty and talent, he began his career in Paris mentored by France’s most celebrated stylists. After moving to Cannes, Jo quickly gained an illustrious reputation as the premier stylist of the Cannes Film Festival, where he spent a decade styling celebrity clientele. But it was another move, this time to Arizona, that led him to open Jo Paris Salon – and the Valley has never looked better. We sat down with Jo to find out a few things about his salon, his stylists, and which products he can’t live without. Q: Your salon has quite a sizeable staff. How do you choose your stylists? A: I make sure that we don’t have a revolving door of stylists. We try to make sure we hire stylists with years of experience who add something to the team. Everyone has a specialty, and we try to showcase that strength – we are one of the few salons that can accommodate just about any client with any kind of hair. Q: So you have specialists for every need? Amazing! What services do you offer? A: We offer almost anything. Color, cuts, extension, ombre, balayage, perms, relaxer, keratin treatments, updos and Olaplex. We offer services to men, women, and children. We also have an amazing aesthetician and offer Microblading. Q: With such a variety of services, you must use a lot of products. Are there certain lines you swear by? A: We use four different styling lines. The most prestigious line we offer, and we are incredibly proud to have, is Oribe – they’re the best products I have ever used. They are specially formulated for every hair type and super-concentrated. I’m not sure I have ever used an Oribe product on my client and they aren’t absolutely in love with their hair. The smell alone keeps people coming back, but it really does what it says it will do. For curly hair, we are also a Ouidad salon. Our color

line, Goldwell, is the only one that actually has hair preserving protein in the color itself. It’s easy to work with, true to tone color that lasts much longer than most. It’s also one of the few color lines that we found to be friendly for people with sensitive skin or color allergies. We also happen to have our own in-salon Goldwell educator as part of our staff, so the education we get for color trends makes us experts in the line. Q: Do Jo Paris Salon stylists participate in any other continuing education? A: Yes. You never stop learning, and we try to expand our knowledge. The staff is constantly choosing to learn new things and stay ahead of the trends. They love what they do, and it shows! Q: Your friendly, hospitable service makes everyone feel comfortable. Why is that important to you? A: Everyone deserves to be pampered. We do have some very prominent clients, but we also have everyday regular people. I wanted to make a place where someone could come in as they are, have a cup of coffee and maybe make a friend while doing it. Our guests can expect that every experience they have with us will be a great one, from their very first visit.

Jo Paris Salon & Spa is located at 14202 N. Scottsdale Rd. and at (480) 663-8994 or visit their website at www.joparissalon.com

This month marks my five-year anniversary in the Valley. I’ll always remember when I moved here from foggy San Francisco – as much as I loved it – I felt as though I’d landed in paradise. After all, March is one of the most idyllic times to be a Phoenician. And as a newbie Phoenician, there’s plenty of “first time for everything” experiences, like your first spring training game and your first festival when most of the country is still bundled up indoors. I even recall diving into a board and bottle deal at Postino WineCafe as one of my first must-try meals, according to locals I’d met. Those tried-andtrue traditions continue – check out five fun springtime festivals (page 70) and some yummy board and bottle deals (page 110). And for those who have, perhaps, “been there, done that” when it comes to outings, read up on some ideas for doing something new on page 72. Looking for more? Pamper yourself with floral spa treatments (page 56), catch Cirque du Soleil’s first on-ice performance (page 66), try your hand at art (pages 56 and 58), celebrate St. Patrick’s Day (page 74), indulge in a foodie fete (page 107), or simply laze in a cocoon-like chair within the comfort of your backyard (page 99). Or, plan your next trip to the Lone Star State – specifically, to my hometown of Dallas – on page 104. March also brings a 24-year tradition to the Valley: Celebrity Fight Night. And this year, Emmy and Tony Award-winning actress and singer Kristin Chenoweth will make her debut at the soiree, performing alongside some of the biggest names in music on March 10. Get to know the woman behind the superstar and how she’s impacting young, hopeful performers on page 50. Happy spring and happy reading! Scottsdale native Mandy Holmes can be seen at high-profile events and fundraisers around the Valley and dishing out fashion and lifestyle inspiration on her blog-turned-brand, The Real Housewife of Scottsdale. The Horizon High School graduate went

on to earn her degree in nutrition communications at Arizona State University and worked her way up to becoming a mompreneur, not only with her blog but also with a new business venture. Holmes’ blog began in 2015 after she found herself giving

Pulse UP CLOSE out tips for the latest happenings in town. “People were constantly asking me for recommendations, like where to go on date night or where to go for dinner. Because I was born and raised here and have such a huge network and knowledge of the city, I thought, ‘I’m going to use my degree in communications for a good cause and start writing everything down.’ That’s how the blog took off.” Since then, Holmes has been rocking her brand with finesse everywhere she goes while showcasing great people, worthwhile causes, fun events and local businesses. Almost immediately after founding the blog, local businesses began reaching out to her wanting to be featured. “It really took off and has become so much more than a creative outlet,” she says. The fashionable mom and wife has a knack for what’s new, what’s hot and what’s happening – with a heart that’s rooted in her hometown. “I enjoy seeing how Scottsdale has changed. I remember when Kierland was just a dirt lot. It’s really evolved, and there’s never a shortage of things to do.” Though, she is careful to curate her content to fit her audience of like-minded women. “I only feature brands that I personally use or events that I personally attend. My blog readers are women like me – busy working moms, girl bosses and entrepreneurs.”

Helping Through Hydration Last year, after Holmes’ grandparents passed away from kidney failure within a month of each other, she saw an opportunity to help others. Her newest business endeavor, Drink Down 64 (www.drinkdown64.com), was born out of the realization that others could benefit from her own painful experience. “My grandparents’ caregivers in hospice told them to drink water,” Holmes says. “But since they suffered from dementia, they didn’t know if they were drinking their water. I remembered that I had seen something on Pinterest – people would take a gallon of water from the grocery store and write on it with a Sharpie,” says Holmes, noting she thought there had to be a cuter way to keep track. After talking with family and friends, the feedback was clear: Even those who weren’t sick could benefit from a water bottle with a tracking feature. “I saw the opportunity as it literally could appeal to every single person on earth. When my grandparents passed away, I knew it was the right time to start Drink Down 64. I launched in January 2018. It’s been great, and the response has been overwhelming.” The bottle, which fits into car cup holders, includes a time notification and shows how much water should be consumed by a certain time each day. When it is refilled at lunch, the time and amount to drink starts over, and by the end of the day, 64 ounces of water will have been consumed –the daily hydration recommendation for the average person. The easy and healthy concept of Drink Down 64 has hit home, even with Hollywood. “One of The Real Housewives of Orange County, Meghan King Edmonds, ordered a water bottle,” Holmes says. “She put it on her social media, tagged me in it, and I got 1,000 orders the first day.” With Drink Down 64’s early success, Holmes is ready to

move forward with more marketing, realizing that there are large communities of people that can benefit from the BPA-free plastic bottles. Future incarnations of Drink Down 64 will include a glass bottle, different color choices, bottles with sports tops and straws. Drink Down 64 is also connected to a cause dear to Holmes’ heart. With each bottle sale, $2 will go to an animal charity located in the state in which a bottle is ordered. “My passion is animals. I have 50 animal rescue partners – one in every state – and that will be the designated rescue. I write checks to all the state rescues based on the sales for that month.” In Arizona, the rescue foundation that receives a portion of each purchase is Rockstar Canine Rescue & Sanctuary in Phoenix. Visitors to The Real Housewife of Scottsdale blog will become immersed in Holmes’ world – and that is exactly what she wants. “I will never make a million dollars with my blog, and I’m OK with that,” she says. “The goal of the blog is to share cool people, places, events and charities for those in the community.”

How to handle fine hair -Ask the expert! Rodney Gentry, Full-service Designer and Hair Color Specialist, Sachi Studios

Q: We’ve focused on the problems and solutions of fine hair here, but are there also advantages to it? RG: Of course! Fine hair can look stunning, just like all other types of hair. Fine hair tends to be soft and silky. This makes it harder to style, but the flip side is that it can almost glow with a wonderful, natural shine. Those with curly fine hair will also find they spend much less time straightening it than their thicker-haired friends. Fine hair is also brilliant for the summer months, when it helps to keep the head cooler. Just like all other hair types, fine hair comes with plentiful advantages, as well as its own particular issues!

From static issues to limp, dull styles, fine hair can sometimes feel impossible to get right. Thankfully, expert color specialist Rodney Gentry, based at Sachi Studios in Scottsdale, is here to help! Q: First, why is it that some of us have finer hair than others? Rodney Gentry: Fine hair results when each individual strand of hair has a small circumference, so that individual strands are not as large as those belonging to other people whose hair has a wider circumference. Q: Do people with fine hair have particular problems as a result of the hair’s fineness? RG: Clients with fine hair tend to come to me with a similar range of complaints. While fine hair can look sleek and beautiful, it can be difficult to style. Many clients also wish for more volume to their hair. Q: How do you help them to overcome these issues? RG: There are plenty of options for those with fine hair. Highlights are one way to add volume and texture, and lowlights can work really well, too. It is really incredible what you can do with color. Clients always get a boost when they see how different their fine hair looks after it has undergone a color treatment. There are also some great products on the market to help with fine hair. I’m loving Goldwell Kerasilk Repower range right now. The four products—shampoo, conditioner, volume plumping cream, volume blow-dry spray— harness the power of natural ingredients like carob in order to create long-lasting volume that leaves the hair bouncy and lightweight. Products like these work wonders, and it is great to be able to introduce clients to them and know how much they will enjoy the effect that they have. Simple things like drying technique can also make a big difference. People with fine hair should lift the hair outward and upward as they dry if they want maximum volume. They should also avoid brushing it when wet, as fine hair can break very easily.

Q: What other problems do people with fine hair face? RG: Fine hair can be more prone to damage than thick hair, so those with fine hair need to be careful about over-styling and the use of chemical treatments. Here at Rodney Gentry, we specialize in using products that are kind to the hair, and that nurture it at the same time as coloring it. I don’t believe that there is any place for harsh chemical treatments in a modern salon—they just aren’t necessary anymore. Enzyme-based products can color hair beautifully, and are so much kinder to it than the old peroxide-based treatments. Q: Can you recommend any quick fixes for those with fine hair? RG: Well, a quick trip to Sachi Studios, for one! For those after a quick fix at home, I would recommend always having a deep conditioning masque on hand, ready to be used as a weekly treatment or whenever particularly luscious locks are required. On a daily basis, it really doesn’t get much better than the Goldwell Kerasilk volume line for those looking for added body.

COLORFUL CREATIONS Local artist Justin Pierce seeks to inspire and uplift through his vibrant works

Justin Pierce brings art to life with his colorful, energetic and positive creations. Growing up, Pierce was constantly drawn to bright colors, which is a constant theme throughout his artwork today. “Let’s just say I was always drawn to color to help make my life seem happier than what it was, but I take my negative childhood experiences and channel them into positive art,” he says. Inspired by artist Keith Haring’s street art, Pierce combines his love of bold colors with his urban California “sunshine state” influence to create the unique artistic style of his brand, J. Pierce. Every creation is painted by freehand and no two paintings are the same, giving Pierce an edge in the creative world. Not only has he created one-of-a-kind pieces for professional athletes, celebrities and art collectors worldwide, Pierce is also currently working on designs for the W Hotel and PayPal offices in Scottsdale. In 2017, Pierce had the privilege of creating the sweet graffiti-like murals at The Art of Ice Cream Experience in Old Town Scottsdale and has showcased his art throughout North America. Although Pierce can’t narrow down his favorite creation to date, he recently had the opportunity to put his art in motion. “I had my BMW wrapped with my artwork. It’s such a blessing to have my art on my car for people to see and smile at because it’s so colorful and animated.” In addition to the countless murals he has devoted to underprivileged schools in Arizona, Pierce recently designed a line of luggage and backpacks for Planet Traveler, shoes for Joy & Mario, and clothes for Liberty Clothing. “I love to inspire youth and impact their lives in a positive manner,” Pierce says. “I want everyone to know that dedication and passion go a long way.” In regards to the future, Pierce notes, “I want to let Arizona know who I am and have my colorful artwork out there for people to enjoy.” Follow Pierce at on Instagram at @iamjpierce and learn more about his work at www.iamjpierce.com.

How Juliaette Chamberlain turned her children’s diagnoses into an opportunity for kids to shine

Just three words – “Mommy, I’m thirsty” – transformed Juliaette Chamberlain’s world. Two hours later, she learned that her son William was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, a disease that would require a carefully controlled diet and routine insulin injections for the rest of his life. “One of my most haunting memories will always be of chasing my little boy around our living room trying to give him his insulin shot,” Chamberlain says. “He was screaming for me not to hurt him.” Type 1 diabetics can only receive insulin via shots, unlike Type 2 diabetics who can sometimes control their blood sugar with oral medication and diet. A year later, the Chamberlain family experienced another heart-wrenching moment when their youngest child, Cy, also tested positive for Type 1 diabetes – an unfortunate rarity as multiple diagnoses within a family is uncommon. Rather than taking this laying down, Chamberlain reached out to her local community and found a support system in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), a Phoenix-based organization focusing on Type 1 diabetes research and advocacy. “Getting involved with JDRF has given me the hope and community I need so my boys have the best chance to thrive,” Chamberlain says. “As an organization, they are lobbying for a cure and educating the communities around them. It is an outstanding charity to support because we are on the cusp of such big medical breakthroughs.” While Chamberlain awaits that next breakthrough in diabetic intervention, she has been inspired by her own children’s strength and curiosity. In 2015, she launched a business, Worldly Kids (www.worldlykids.com), which provides a way for children to learn foreign languages, particularly those that are uncommon. Using children’s songs and basic vocabulary, she found a way to make learning languages fun and inviting. “Worldly Kids exposed my boys to Mandarin and Arabic, and they now want to attend Global Minds, a Mandarin immersion preschool here in Scottsdale,” Chamberlain says. “Their ear for intricate pronunciations is incredible, on top of knowing vocabulary. Best of all, it keeps their minds off of what makes them medically different and highlights what makes them special. I think every child can benefit from that.”

DAPPER DANCER Jeremy Gatlin’s artful take on style

BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE

Professional ballroom dancing champion Jeremy Gatlin takes his sleek, debonair style from the dance studio to the streets of Scottsdale. Growing up, Gatlin idolized Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire not only for their charismatic dance moves, but also their impeccable sense of style. Today, he takes a sophisticated approach and applies inspiration from both men when it comes to his dance-inspired wardrobe. “The ballroom world has a certain sense of elegance and refinement and calls for a higher-end clientele, so you must always look the part,” Gatlin says. “I love to find fitted clothes that allow me to move freely while still being comfortable, stylish and edgy.” Recently, on a trip to Rome, Gatlin revealed he was thrilled to see that men weren’t afraid to be fashion-forward. “I’m not afraid of colors or having a more European sense of clothing. “I like dressy button-down shirts with ornate embroidery from brands like English Laundry, and I like to layer my clothing for a more three-dimensional look.” Whether you’re talking about his dancing career or his wardrobe, Gatlin acknowledges that Walt Disney said it best, “If you can dream it, you can do it!”

What is your must-have fashion item? I love to dress up my basic daily outfits with a vest. I have one in my closet that I wear a lot, and it’s double-layered with two different kinds of material and colors to give it more dimension. What is your most prized possession in your closet and why? I have several dress jackets that I love! When used the right way they can really dress up an outfit. How do you transition from the dance studio to a night out? I always carry a nice dress jacket in my car to wear in the evening, or my Guess leather jacket is trendy for a night out on the town.

Vita Galore’s whimsical, feminine fashions are all about self-empowerment

BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY BEVERLY SHUMWAY

It’s not every day you meet a woman who has tiaras sprinkled throughout her house should the moment arise to pop one on. Vita Galore – the pseudonym of Allison Contris meaning “life abundance” – is a woman with humble roots, and no matter where she goes, she has an impeccable sense of style. With a whimsical elegance and inspirational fashion sense, Galore embraces her eccentric side by combining classic couture with vivid color palettes and vintage inspirations. Not only is Galore the face behind www.vitagaloreallure.com, she is in the process of expanding her lifestyle brand, where she shares everything from fashion to advice on leading your best life, to create a luxury clothing line that engages women’s empowerment on a global level. When it comes to her style, Galore admits to being obsessed with the Louis VI era. She is a big fan of Alessandro Michele, Gucci’s creative director, saying, “He inspires me to mix modern style with vintage flair.” Though Galore is inspired by trends, she also embraces whatever her fashionable heart desires. “When Fendi introduced their Marie Antoinette collection, I was mesmerized. It’s as if they went loco for rococo when creating functionality from an era of opulence and formality,” Galore says. “I also adore wearing glitter cosmetics and sequin jumpsuits. I’ll wear glitter even after it trends.”

What’s your favorite piece of clothing? A custom-made silk kimono blouse created by my friend. I feel invincible every time I wear it. How does your blog influence your style? It gives me permission to embrace my variegated style. I create looks based on my mood and sometimes there’s no rhyme or reason. What is your must-have fashion item? Gucci’s faux fur Princeton leather slippers. They can be dressed up or down, are travel-friendly, and make a statement.

Whether you’ve caught her on numerous TV shows, including Glee, The West Wing, and her Emmy Award-winning role on Pushing Daisies, or on the big screen in Running with Scissors or The Peanuts Movie, one can’t help but be captivated by the pure Midwestern charm of Kristin Chenoweth. The singer, actress and Broadway powerhouse – who starred as Glinda in Wicked and won a Tony Award for her role in You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown – will appear in the Valley to perform at Celebrity Fight Night on Saturday, March 10. In addition to the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center, the star-studded event will support the Alzheimer’s and Cognitive Disorders Program at Barrow Neurological Institute, as well as other charities. “I had been invited to Celebrity Fight Night one other time and wasn’t able go,” Chenoweth says. “I was so upset. Not only was this for a good cause, but it sounded fun. I thought I could hang with Reba and Andrea Bocelli, plus David Foster, who I love, and just meet some cool people. Then I got the invitation again, and I started clearing my schedule for it.” Celebrity Fight Night also has a corresponding European event each year, and it played a part in getting Chenoweth to the Valley. “I didn’t realize the history of Celebrity Fight Night and that Muhammad Ali and Andrea Bocelli had partnered and begun this incredible work together. I knew it was charity and it was doing

52

So Scottsdale! March ‘18

good things, but I really didn’t know what it was.” In 2017, she was able to attend Celebrity Fight Night in Italy and her experience was profound. After that, she says, “I knew I wanted to be part of it.” Regarding Chenoweth’s involvement, Jimmy Walker, the founder of Celebrity Fight Night, says, “Kristin Chenoweth was a favorite among many Europeans at our Celebrity Fight NightAndrea Bocelli Foundation charity event last September when we were in the historic Colosseum in Rome. Kristin is not only a superstar on stage, where she is extremely talented. More importantly, she is a superstar in real life, where everyone loves her.” Chenoweth has been personally touched by her experience with Celebrity Fight Night as it relates to her own philanthropic endeavors, too. “I have my own theater in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, where I grew up. This past summer was our third summer arts camp for kids to come and audition and learn singing, acting and dancing. It’s really changed my focus in this area.” In 2012, the Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center Foundation joined forces with the actress to name The Kristin Chenoweth Theatre and form The Kristin Chenoweth Arts & Entertainment Fund. Initiatives include bringing internationally acclaimed artists and Broadway productions to Broken Arrow, scholarship programs, educational outreach classes with touring artists, summer and after-school workshops, and creating opportunities for students to perform at the national level. “I wanted to watch David Foster, Andrea Bocelli and Jimmy Walker and see how they did this event,” Chenoweth says. “My foundation is young, and I want to learn. I want to learn.” During her time in Italy, Chenoweth recalls having one of the best weeks of her life. “I met some incredible people. I’m sitting there and Steven Tyler gets up and performs and I’m just like, ‘Now wait a minute!’ And then Andrea Bocelli sings, and he has a son, Matteo Bocelli, who is following in his footsteps. He is someone that I personally want to mentor, but he doesn’t know it yet! I see the big picture. I see what they’re doing, and it’s really changed my life. “Musically, it was one of the happiest times I’ve had,” Chenoweth adds. “I got to go up and sing a couple of songs and that was cool. But all of a sudden, David Foster asked [if I wanted] sing The Prayer with Andrea Bocelli. I was like, ‘What?!’ That was a bananas moment.” During her time at Celebrity Fight Night in Italy, Bocelli asked Chenoweth to perform with him at Madison Square Garden. She particularly identified with Bocelli in that they have a mutual love of getting young performers on stage with them, along with other wellknown performers and artists. Chenoweth adds, “Andrea gets it, too.”

CELEBRITY FIGHT NIGHT IN SCOTTSDALE “Jimmy [Walker] and I have an unlikely friendship, and I didn’t know it,” says Chenoweth, noting that although he comes from the world of investments and she comes from the world of performance, they have a bond through helping others. “He and I share a similar fate,” Chenoweth says. “Being with him, the few times that I have, it is a reminder to me that he is a representative to the stars and

he remembers what this is about and that is a big draw.” She feels that, for her, Celebrity Fight Night is absolutely the right event in which to be involved. In addition to supporting Celebrity Fight Night and her initiatives with the Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center Foundation and The Kristin Chenoweth Arts & Entertainment Fund, she raises awareness and support for various causes. “Kind of like how Andrea Bocelli is involved with kids in the arts, that’s a big one for me. But I’m also involved with cancer awareness and anything to do with breast cancer. I’ve lost an aunt to cancer, my mom has had cancer three times, and another one of my aunts has had cancer,” she says. “In New York, I like to give back to the homeless.” With great sincerity, Chenoweth says she loves to give back to those who are less fortunate and she supports numerous organizations that help the poor. Though she lives in Los Angeles, Chenoweth has a heart for Scottsdale and Phoenix. “In Oklahoma, we don’t have a

professional football team. I’ve adopted the Arizona Cardinals because I grew up in Phoenix until I was in second grade. My dad and I have always rooted for the Cardinals.” In fact, Michael Bidwell approached Chenoweth during the Cardinals’ Veteran’s Day game in November about doing a free concert for the families at Luke Air Force Base. This was a no-brainer for Chenoweth. “I have several military members in my family, so I know their sacrifices. There are just certain places I feel drawn, and Phoenix is one of those places.” She will be back in the Valley again shortly after Celebrity Fight Night to perform at Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts on March 17. The 24th Annual Celebrity Fight Night will be hosted by the Grammy Award-winning leading lady of country music, Reba McEntire, for her 13th year. It will take place at the JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort & Spa at 5 p.m. on March 10. For tickets or additional information, visit www.celebrityfightnight.org.

Magical. Whimsical. Defying the laws of gravity. These are just a few descriptors of the renowned Cirque du Soleil family of shows. As the world’s largest theatrical producer, Cirque du Soleil creates out-ofthis-world experiences, and for the first time ever, the wondrous show is taking its repertoire to the ice in the production Crystal. This month, Talking Stick Resort Arena will transform into a frozen playground for four days where world-class ice skaters and acrobats will perform amazing human feats in a “breakthrough ice experience.” From double axels to amazing acrobatics,

the show combines circus arts over ice, sweeping spectators away in a flurry of excitement. “It is fantastic to share the stage not only with ice skaters – extreme, freestyle, solo and pairs – but also acrobats. We learn a lot from each other and I get to show some of my unique tricks,” says Zabato Bebe, an Austrian solo figure skater in Crystal. Among the troupe of eloquent and agile skaters is Crystal, the show’s leading lady who is on a journey of self-discovery. Bystanders will accompany her as she

skates her way to her destiny, proving to herself that she has always been a confident, liberated and empowered young lady. The ice rink at Talking Stick Resort Arena will take on many forms, including an extreme skating playground and a ballroom where Crystal and her male counterpart will blur the boundaries between ice and sky in a mesmerizing pas de deux. In another scene, the ice rink becomes a playful pinball machine. “It will be my first time in Phoenix, and I can’t wait to see the city and hear the audiences cheering for us,” Bebe says.

Compassion with Fashion celebrates its 20th anniversary

BY MANDY HOLMES

Amid wagging tails and generous hearts, the Arizona Humane Society’s (AHS) annual fundraiser, Compassion with Fashion, will take place on Sunday, March 25 at the newly renovated Arizona Ballroom at the JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn Resort & Spa. More than 1,000 animal-loving guests will gather for the 20th anniversary celebration that will aim to raise over $1 million to support the innovative programs and services necessary for the furry friends who make their way through AHS’ doors. “After seeing the homeless and injured lives saved by AHS, there is nothing I would rather do than work to raise money for this amazing organization,” says Ann Siner, event co-chair and AHS board member. “Dogs and cats that arrive sick or injured at AHS’ Second Chance Animal Trauma Hospital are literally given a new lease on life and the chance at a better life.” New this year, the afternoon’s festivities will feature a live auction spotlighting a custom, one-of-a-kind Ron Burns painting valued at more than $19,000 and a designer fashion show featuring Chanel, Versace and Diane von Furstenberg, courtesy of My Sister’s Closet. Event co-chairs and owners of My Sisters Closet, Ann Siner and Tess Loo, have taken every detail into consideration to make the 20th anniversary of Compassion with Fashion the most successful yet. “My goal is to have people leave the luncheon exclaiming with excitement that this was ‘paws down’ the best Compassion with Fashion event ever! I want to hear big wows and sighs of joy,” Loo says. Of course, the stars of the show will be the adoptable dogs as they strut their stuff down the runway in true furry fashionista style while guests dine on a gourmet

The fundraiser takes place at the Tempe location on March 17 from 1 to 3 p.m., but all three locations will have a special menu in honor of St. Patrick’s Day with items like bacon cheddar potato cakes, Scotch eggs, and an Irish beer flight. The menu is available March 1-18. Multiple locations; www.thirstyliongastropub.com.

Rosie McCaffrey’s Irish Pub

Owner Seamus McCaffrey and his family bring the flavors and hospitality of their Irish home to Valley residents with three authentic Dublin pubs. In 2002, Rosie McCaffrey’s, the youngest of the bunch, opened its doors. The pub brings a piece of the Emerald Isle to Camelback Road by serving traditional pub fare like its award-winning fish and chips, streaming live Glasgow Celtics football matches, and, of course, serving pints of Guinness poured correctly (a two-step process). Rosie’s Backside, an enclosed back patio, accommodates 50 guests and also offers catering and bar services for private events and business functions. On March 17, St. Patrick’s Day festivities

Seamus McCaffrey’s and Rosie McCaffrey’s were once under the same ownership. Today, Seamus McCaffrey’s Irish Pub & Restaurant runs separately. Despite the switch in leadership, the pub remains true to its original Irish roots. TV sets adorn every corner of the pub to ensure optimal views of sports games. Come in Monday through Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. and enjoy happy hour discounts like a 20-ounce Guinness draft for $5 and $4.50 well drinks and house wines. Seamus McCaffrey’s will close down and take over 1st through Central avenues for its St. Patrick’s Day Party on March 17. There will be food trucks, three live bands, and several other fun promotions and drink specials. Entry to Seamus McCaffrey’s St. Patrick’s Day Party is $10 per person and is cash only. 18 W. Clancy’s Irish Pub

Clancy’s Irish Pub gives Phoenicians a taste of Midwestern mentality. Originally established in 1977 in Omaha, Nebraska, the venue’s relaxing atmosphere and welcoming staff is meant to make every patron feel at home. Clancy’s is happy to turn on Arizona Cardinals games for natives, but its loyalty lies with the Midwest as it is the official venue for the Nebraska Cornhuskers and Green Bay Packers. Come in early on St. Patrick’s Day and get free green eggs and ham with the purchase of a beverage. There will be live music throughout the day, including performers Trevor Scott, Harley Harkins and Stompbox. Those who stop by March 16-17 wearing Irishinspired garb (translation: lots of green) have a chance to win Clancy’s best-dressed contest. The pub opens at 6 a.m. on St. Patrick’s Day. 4432 N. Miller Road, Scottsdale; 480.990.8797; www.clancyspubscottsdale.com.

Skeptical Chymist

This apothecary-themed pub is the namesake of the 1661 book The Skeptical Chymist written by Irishman Robert Boyle, who was deemed the founder of modern chemistry. With wooden accents, antique spice cabinets, and medicine bottles and jugs scattered throughout the space, the bar pays homage to old pharmacies that doubled as pubs back in the day. The majority of the venue’s decor hails from Ireland, giving guests a true taste of an old-school Irish pub. This St. Patrick’s Day, an Irish breakfast will start at 8 a.m., and there will be live Irish music throughout the day from 11 a.m. to midnight. Plus, drink vendors will be on site to dole out special promos and giveaways. After 11 a.m. there is a $10 cover charge. 15689 N. Hayden Road, Scottsdale; 480.609.8677; www.skepticalchymist.com.

The Rose & Crown Pub

There is only one locally owned joint that’s been awarded Best English Pub six times in the Valley, and it’s The Rose & Crown. Located in a historic Victorian-style bungalow, the pub sits in one of Phoenix’s oldest standing neighborhoods, Heritage Square. Adding to the venue’s charm is British-inspired artwork hanging from the walls

and a friendly team pouring more than 50 local and imported beers. The quaint pub also doubles as an American bar with Yankee favorites like foosball, pool, cornhole and several high-definition TVs for watching sports. In keeping with the pub’s endearing ways, there will be a small (free) block party surrounding the area on St. Patrick’s Day, with festivities going from 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. Attendees can anticipate live music, DJs and classic Irish dishes like Guinness stew and corned beef and cabbage. 628 E. Adams St., Phoenix; 602.256.0223; www.theroseandcrownaz.com. Tilted Kilt Pub & Eatery
A kilt is a traditional garment found in Celtic nations, namely Scotland. While Arizona is not exactly a Celtic nation, it does indeed celebrate the pleated skirt at Tilted Kilt Pub & Eatery. Home to more than 30 beers on tap and a menu of bar favorites like mozzarella sticks, chicken wings and a good ol’ burger, Tilted Kilt also offers daily specials and plenty of fanfare for Arizona sports teams. Though, perhaps it is St. Patrick’s Day that’s Tilted Kilt’s favorite day of the year – through March 31, they will offer an Irish hooley (party) menu, paying homage to the pub’s Irish origins. Plus, they usually have a celebration with live music and green beer. Two locations; www.tiltedkilt.com.

Four Peaks Grill & Tap

Thanks to Four Peaks Brewery, craft beer in the Southwest has become a force to be reckoned with. Four Peaks’ Scottsdale pub boasts a laid-back atmosphere with a mezzanine balcony that accommodates 40 guests, a menu of pub favorites, and, of course, beer tastings. All of the brews are on tap, ensuring a fresh pour each and every time. Don’t miss out on this year’s St. Patrick’s Day happenings, which kick off bright and early at 7 a.m. The first 50 guests will receive a free commemorative shirt as a keepsake. Don’t fret if you’re guest No. 51, though, because shirts and tank tops will be available for purchase throughout the day for $20. Irish breakfast staples will be served until 10 a.m., with other traditional fare, including corned beef and cabbage, shepherd’s pie and Irish stew, dished out all day. To drink, enjoy $4 pints, $6 Irish car bombs, and Irish coffee. 15745 N. Hayden Road, Scottsdale; 480.991.1795; www.fourpeaks.com.

Harold’s Cave Creek Corral

Itching to get a taste of the wild, Wild West? Since 1935, Harold’s has provided an authentic Western saloon experience; even celebrities and cowboys were known to frequent this Cave Creek hangout. In fact, the venue set the scene for big screen films like Rafferty and the Gold Dust Twins and Electra Glide in Blue. Harold’s keeps the charm of the Western spirit alive with free country dance lessons every Friday from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. But, on March 17, lasso the troops and head over to Harold’s for one spectacular St. Patrick’s Day celebration. The day’s music agenda includes the Shelia McGuire Band, Karen O, and Crown Kings. Get your Irish fix with traditional items like corned beef and cabbage, fish and chips, and shepherd’s pie – plus pints of green beer, a shot of Jameson chased with Smithwick’s Irish Ale, Irish car bombs and Guinness. This may be an Irish celebration, but that doesn’t mean you have to leave your cowboy or cowgirl hat at home! 6895 E. Cave Creek Road, Cave Creek; 480.488.1906; www.haroldscorral.com.

PAINTING FOR THE PEOPLE Paradise Valley artist Chad Little uses his talent to help others

So Scottsdale! March ‘18

With a contemporary facade and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the desert stands Chad Little’s new art studio in Paradise Valley, designed by local architects Chen + Suchart. The self-taught painter envisioned creating a remarkable workspace that functions as a working studio rather than a gallery. Though, he also wanted a place that can turn into a space for special events and art exhibitions. Successfully, Little opened his modern, light-filled studio around August of last year, and even though he still considers himself pretty new to the game – he started painting in 2015 – he has been an artist his whole life. He even published a book titled Becoming a Computer Artist in 1994. With a graphic design and tech entrepreneurship background, and inspired by abstract impressionism, he moved from his computer screen to the blank canvas. Often, vintage photographs of strangers inspire his oil paintings. “I have a pretty dry sense of humor and find some of these personal photos to have a story that paints itself,” he says. “I’m typically looking for something that makes me smile in a silly and dry way. The vintage part has to do with the era; a time when design ruled so much of everyday life. Avocado-colored appliances. Fins on an old Chevy car. The clothes!” When asked about his artistic process, Little says there is a special instant at the beginning of the creative moment that’s hard to describe. “It’s a bit of butterflies in your stomach when something looks or feels right. It hits you and you know you’re on the right path. It’s instinctual and hard to find.” His next solo show, titled Crooked, will compile a series of oil and mixed media paintings inspired by 1920s mug shots. The painter came across an archive of these in Sydney, Australia, and since then he has been impressed with the stories behind those photos. “Everyone is dressed up in amazing hats,” he says. “And most have detailed stories of their ‘crimes.’” The exhibit opens on April 5. In the past, his solo shows’ profits have been centered on supporting charities, including Altered Tails, a nonprofit organization specialized in veterinarian services, and one•n•ten, a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving LGBTQ youth. “Our mission is to find and support the charities that struggle with keeping a balance between raising money and getting the job done,” he says. Little and his wife, Sophia, recently opened their own foundation called SkinnyPig with the objective to support other organizations. All of the proceeds from his artwork go to their charity and the causes it supports. You can find Little’s studio on 60th Street off of Lincoln Drive in Paradise Valley and schedule a time to visit by emailing chadlittleart@gmail.com. Learn more at www.chadlittleart.com.

2018 MERCEDES-BENZ AMG C63 S CABRIOLET An exceptional vehicle inside and out BY JIM PRUETER

VITAL STATS: Base price: $81,500

On a weekly basis, a press vehicle is dropped off at my house, and the previous vehicle is picked up. They range from pickup trucks to economy cars, electric vehicles, SUVs and so forth. But a few times each year, something really special arrives that I don’t want to give back. Such was the case with the Mercedes-Benz AMG C63 S Cabriolet. With 503 horsepower, 516 pound-feet of torque, and a seven-speed automatic transmission, the hand-built 4.0-liter, V-8 bi-turbo engine is the same used in the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT, E-Class sedan, and other C-Class models. Add in AMG forged cross-spoke wheels – 19 inches up front and 20 in the back – and one can reach zero to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds. It’s brought to a smooth but certain stop by large 15.8-inch ceramic brakes with red-painted brake calipers. An optional performance exhaust system with flap control varies the exhaust notes depending on the selected transmission mode. This produces awesome, throaty growls, popping and cracks. It isn’t loud enough to wake the neighbors, but the effect is delicious. A Dynamic Select driving control

102

So Scottsdale! March ‘18

menu on the center console enables the driver to customize the C63’s performance from the plush “Comfort” mode to the aggressive “Sport” or the distinct “Sport+” and “RACE” modes. All this goodness is wrapped in a sleek, sophisticated selection of colors with a drop-top. This car is the bomb. Inside, the C63 S has some of the best bucket seats I’ve ever occupied. Leather seats and trim, brushed aluminum precision switchgear, and gorgeous turbine-styled air vents – all materials are top-rate with exceptional build quality. Although, I’m not in love with the placement of the center LCD screen, which looks like it was added after the car had been completely built. Without question, this car is a beast. But, for such a high-performance vehicle, it’s actually quite friendly, easy to drive, and even thoughtful. That’s because, while cars keep getting faster, the people who buy them are not necessarily becoming better drivers. DALLAS BOUND

The Lone Star State’s third-largest city is a mecca of art, entertainment, eats and outdoor experiences

BY SUSAN LANIER-GRAHAM

The Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area (the DFW Metroplex as locals call it) is a diverse place with more than 7 million residents. It offers everything from downhome hospitality to chic galleries and funky neighborhoods. With more than a dozen nonstop flights each day from Phoenix, there’s no reason not to head south.

Exploring Downtown Dallas

PHOTOS COURTESY OF DALLAS CVB

The DFW Metroplex is massive, covering an area bigger than the states of Rhode Island and Connecticut combined. You’ll want to be strategic about what you plan to visit, and Downtown Dallas must be on the list. Downtown, stop by the Perot Museum of Nature and Science. The modern cube-shaped building is famed for its glass-encased escalator on the outside of the structure. Inside, the museum is filled with interactive exhibits, including an earthquake simulator and a Texas Instruments Engineering and Innovation Hall with an assortment of digital electronics. For sky-high views, head 470 feet above ground to the GeODeck at the top of Reunion Tower. There are telescopes that let you view the streetscape, and if you return at night, dine at Wolfgang Puck’s Five Sixty, which is even higher, at 560 feet. This elegant restaurant has floor-to-ceiling windows all around, offering 360-degree city views as the room revolves. Another downtown must-see is The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza. It was from here, in the former Texas School Book Depository, where significant evidence of a sniper was found following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. For a respite from the bustling city, the 66-acre Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden in East Dallas, on the shores of White Rock Lake, is especially lovely in spring. Each day, enjoy tastings of recipes made with vegetables harvested from the local gardens. Find out more at www.visitdallas.com.

Neighborhood Know-how Dallas is filled with a variety of neighborhoods, many of which offer an eclectic, artsy look at the city. Deep Ellum is an entertainment district filled with street murals, quirky art galleries, and indie concert venues. In the 1920s, this was the place to go for jazz and blues, and you can still find great music here, including April’s annual Deep Ellum Arts Festival. The Bishop Arts District is a hip area with more than 60 boutiques, restaurants, bars, coffee shops, theaters and art galleries. Pegged as “Dallas’ most independent neighborhood,” you won’t find chain restaurants or big-box stores in this indie district. Though more of a micro-neighborhood near downtown, Trinity Groves is a popular entertainment destination filled with start-up

restaurants, shops and galleries. In fact, it’s a “restaurant concept incubator program” that encourages chefs and restaurateurs to open unique ventures in an area once filled with industrial warehouses. In addition to being a foodie haven, there are galleries, a brewery and ongoing events. Head north of downtown to Highland Park to explore the upscale shopping at Highland Park Village. HP Village opened in 1931 as the country’s first shopping center and became a National Historic Landmark in 2000. The center has a variety of high-end retailers including Hermès, Valentino and Dior as well as restaurants and Texas’ first luxury theater, Village Theatre.

Exploring Nearby Cities When you fly into Dallas, you will either fly into Dallas Love Field on Southwest Airlines or DFW Airport on American Airlines. DFW Airport is located near the town of Grapevine, which has a historic downtown area filled with art galleries and boutiques. Grapevine’s Urban Wine Trail also makes it a fun destination for wine tasting. There are several options throughout town, but don’t miss Messina Hof Grapevine Winery with its cozy Victorian setting or the Sloan & Williams Winery where you can pair drinking wine with wine ice cream. If you head to Wine Fusion Winery, you can blend your own wine. For music lovers, nearby Irving is home to the Dallas area’s newest music and entertainment scene. The Toyota Music Factory recently opened with three venues in one – two theaters and a large amphitheater. In addition to live entertainment, there are 25 restaurants either open now or opening throughout 2018.

Where to Stay Dallas has a variety of accommodations, and one of the most convenient luxury hotels is the Grand Hyatt DFW. Located inside DFW Airport’s International Terminal D, it offers sumptuous accommodations, and, as a guest, you can access the shopping inside security. Simply ask the concierge and they will escort you through the TSA checkpoint, even without a boarding pass. The guestrooms offer fun runway views without any airport noise, and the rooftop pool is a welcome oasis. Dining at Grand Met is a treat, which is unexpected for an airport location. If you prefer to soak up neighborhood flavor, head to the trendy Uptown area’s Hotel ZaZa Dallas. This upscale boutique hotel captures the quirky side of the city with themed rooms and suites, easy walking to restaurants, and pampering at ZaSpa. With so many great things to experience in Dallas – and a short 2.5-hour flight from Phoenix – you’ll be pulling on your boots for the Lone Star State.

Taste DRINK

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

A TASTE OF SPRING Expand your palate with unique Arizona-made white wines

Spring has sprung – and so have Arizona’s vines. We sipped and sampled our way around the state to unearth some of its most interesting white wine varietals.

If you like classic chardonnay, try … Page Springs Cellars 2015 Colibri Roussanne, $26 Many people direct “oaked” (aka more traditional) chardonnay sippers to sample Arizona viogniers, but these roussanne grapes, which grow in the shadow of the mighty Chiricahua Mountains of Southern Arizona, are silky and rich with hints of clean springtime flavors like apricot, lemon and peach. Like a chardonnay, there is a creamy feel to the wine, but the dry finish makes it a little lighter and airier.

If you like unoaked chardonnay, try … Coronado Vineyards 2016 Dry Riesling, $16 In recent years, unoaked chardonnay – which is aged in stainless steel versus oak barrels for a less buttery result – has become all the rage. This riesling is similarly aged in stainless steel, resulting in a lemony yellow color with hints of apricot, apple and honeydew. Its subtle sweetness doesn’t overpower, making it more akin to an unoaked chardonnay than a traditional, sweet German riesling.

If you like pinot grigio, try … Kief-Joshua 2015 Chenin Blanc, $25 Light, bright and a bit fruity, this delightful alternative to pinot grigio always turns heads. It has a medium acidity, ideal for white wine lovers who aren’t quite ready for the full crispness of a sauvignon blanc, yet want a little more zest than a basic pinot.

If you like sauvignon blanc, try … Pillsbury Wine Company 2016 Chardonnay, $24 This wine, which earned a Gold Medal from the San Francisco Chronicle, is aged for six months in neutral oak, so, like the dry riesling, it isn’t buttery. Instead, there are clear notes of florals, shortbread and all sorts of citrus, a favorite for sauvignon blanc lovers. Also like sauvignon blanc – and spring itself – it’s crisp, clean and loves to be chilled.

If you like a white blend, try … Bodega Pierce 2016 Pandora, $18 This blend features the award-winning winemaker’s estate pinot gris, sauvignon blanc and Malvasia Bianca in every delightful sip. Together, these grapes combine to give the drinker the sweet crispness of a pear and floral notes of both lilies and dreamy hibiscus.

If you like sparkling white wine, try ... Aridus 2016 Sparkling Malvasia, $47.25 This particular effervescent sparkling wine features intense aromas of peach, tangerine and honeysuckle. The palate is predominantly citrusy – especially with orange blossom – and has a lingering floral finish. There are also some surprising notes on the second and third sips of ginger and spice.

GRAZIE!

Sip on The Sicilian Butcher’s springtime sensation

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS

All of the cocktails at The Sicilian Butcher, a butchery-inspired eatery that opened late last year, have two things in common: Each is based on a classic, and each has an Italian or Sicilian twist. The Grazie ($10), for example, is inspired by the gin sour, which is known for its froth and herbaceous, yet refreshing, flavor. The Sicilian Butcher’s recipe starts by making a puree from fresh strawberries and sugar then adding Italian red wine and reducing the mixture for 25 minutes. “We use nero d’avola wine, a grape directly from southern Italy and Sicily that tastes much like a New World shiraz with sweet tannins and plum, peppery flavors,” says mixologist Sheldon Wiley. The reduction is then combined with gin in a shaker. “When we can, we use a Sicilian gin, but most respected brands have the herbal notes needed to balance the sweetness in the reduction,” says Wiley, who also includes fresh lemon juice for acidity before adding in a secret ingredient – aquafaba. “Aquafaba is chickpea brine and used as a vegan substitute for egg whites,” Wiley says. “Like with egg whites, we add it to the shaker and dry shake vigorously, then add ice and shake again, which gives us the froth.” The contents are strained and poured into a snifter glass and then garnished with shaved cinnamon and a sprig of mint. “Seventy percent of what we taste comes from what we smell, so these agents work to bring out the sweetness, bitterness and freshness of the cocktail on the nose,” Wiley says. CHEF CONVERSATIONS In the kitchen with Sara Garrant of Bourbon Steak

Sara Garrant serves as the new executive chef of Michael Mina’s Bourbon Steak at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess, delivering fine cuts of beef, poultry and fish, all slow-poached in butter and grilled over wood-fueled flames.

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS

You’re originally from Alaska? I am! I grew up in tight-knit community of commercial salmon fishermen in south central Alaska. From a young age, my mom and I would spend summers cooking for our “adopted family” of fishermen – when I wasn’t fishing myself, mind you. How did you make your way to Arizona? After high school, I attended Le Cordon Bleu in Ottawa, Ontario. Believe it or not, my first foray into the culinary world in the “lower 48” was right here in the Valley after culinary school. So Alaskan and homegrown, in a way? Yep. In 2008, I landed a position working under chef Chris Curtiss at Noca. He really helped me develop my culinary style. While working with him, I learned a true appreciation of local produce, sustainable seafood, and a general respect of the products used on a daily basis. How did you come to join Bourbon Steak? This is actually my second stint with Bourbon Steak. After Noca, I relocated to San Diego briefly before coming back to Scottsdale to open Isabella’s Kitchen in 2012. In 2013, I joined Bourbon Steak when my mentor, chef Curtiss, moved to the venue. In 2015, I transferred cross-country to take on a position at Michael Mina 74 at Fontainebleau Miami Beach. Culinary chops honed, I came back to Bourbon Steak, this time as executive chef. What is your approach in the kitchen? Give everything and everyone a little love. If you take the time to treat the products you are lucky enough to use – and the people you are lucky enough to work beside – with respect, guests can taste the difference. Do you have a favorite thing to cook? Given my roots, my heart belongs to seafood! Bourbon Steak, 7575 E. Princess Drive, Scottsdale; 480.585.2694; www.scottsdaleprincess.com.

Hotel Adeline opens its doors in Scottsdale

local favorite Original ChopShop, the three new concepts boast fresh ingredients, made-to-order dishes, and plenty of vegan and gluten-free options.

Selfmade Open for dinner daily, Selfmade is Hotel Adeline’s full-service restaurant serving seasonal American dishes with Mediterranean influences. Signature dishes include the roasted chicken “porchetta” with smoked garlic quinoa stuffing and braised short ribs with chamomile caramel squash, Brussels sprouts and mustard jus. Guests will also enjoy an inventive beverage menu featuring wine, craft beers and creative cocktails.

Good & Proper Scottsdale’s hospitality scene continues to grow. This month, after a soft opening with limited offerings in January, Hotel Adeline makes its formal debut. The 4.5-acre property, which initially opened in 1970 and has been a Clarion, Fairfield and Days Hotel, underwent a $12 million renovation as part of its transformation. Now a contemporary urban retreat, the boutique hotel offers 213 guestrooms including five spacious 700-square-foot king suites. Each room features modern wood furniture with retro flair, built-in live edge work desks, mixed textures and geometric patterns, walk-in rainfall showers, and 50-inch smart TVs. Hotel Adeline’s 3,000-square-foot negative-edge pool serves as the centerpiece of the property and is surrounded by 16 chic cabanas, spacious courtyards with cozy fire pits, and a multi-purpose elevated deck. There are several buzzing communal spaces and 1,800 square feet of private event space. But perhaps the most intriguing element of the hotel is its culinary offerings, open to locals and guests alike. Created in partnership with restaurateur Ryan Jocque, the creative force behind

As the hotel’s casual cafe concept, Good & Proper features a range of fast-casual and grab-and-go items. The breakfast and lunch menu offers a selection of egg dishes, breakfast bowls, sandwiches, salads, and made-to-order plates. Plus, late-night graband-go snacks are available until midnight daily, while fresh-squeezed juices, wine and beer complete the offerings.

Freestyle At the heart of the hotel’s pool sits Freestyle, a trendy pool bar with a “see and be seen” vibe offering a selection of starters, housemade pizzas and drinks.

Insider Tips Guests “in the know” will stumble upon Hotel Adeline’s own hidden gem, a speakeasy-type hideaway that will pair 100 whiskeys from around the world with specialty ice and boutique glassware. And it’s definitely worth noting that locals who present their Arizona ID at check-in will receive 12 percent off of their stay. Hotel Adeline, 5101 N.
