When It Comes To Divorce, We Love To Stomp The Other Side’s Divots. When you think about it, a polo match can be a lot like the challenges of divorce. The ball bounces back and forth across the field. Sometimes one side scores. Sometimes the other. And usually there’s a victor. So be the winner. You keep going to polo matches. They get the coffee table and tickets to the State Fair. Look good. Do good. Give us a call. There are few sports more beautiful than polo. Or coming out the way you want it in a divorce.

Parisian
Perfection A one-on-one interview with renowned French stylist Jo, owner of Jo Paris Salon
J
o Paris Salon features the lavish, luxurious surroundings you would expect in any upscale locale, but there’s a crucial difference within the welcoming atmosphere, suffused with a familial warmth that puts you instantly at ease. And the differences don’t end there; in every facet of the experience is the evidence of a deeply connected team, each member striving to provide premium-quality services and unforgettably gracious treatment. The salon is the kind of place its owner and namesake, Jo, had always dreamed of opening. With an innate sense of beauty and talent, he began his career in Paris mentored by France’s most celebrated stylists. After moving to Cannes, Jo quickly gained an illustrious reputation as the premier stylist of the Cannes Film Festival, where he spent a decade styling celebrity clientele. But it was another move, this time to Arizona, that led him to open Jo Paris Salon – and the Valley has never looked better. We sat down with Jo to find out a few things about his salon, his stylists, and which products he can’t live without. Q: Your salon has quite a sizeable staff. How do you choose your stylists? A: I make sure that we don’t have a revolving door of stylists. We try to make sure we hire stylists with years of experience who add something to the team. Everyone has a specialty, and we try to showcase that strength – we are one of the few salons that can accommodate just about any client with any kind of hair. Q: So you have specialists for every need? Amazing! What services do you offer? A: We offer almost anything. Color, cuts, extension, ombre, balayage, perms, relaxer, keratin treatments, updos and Olaplex. We offer services to men, women, and children. We also have an amazing aesthetician and offer Microblading. Q: With such a variety of services, you must use a lot of products. Are there certain lines you swear by? A: We use four different styling lines. The most prestigious line we offer, and we are incredibly proud to have, is Oribe – they’re the best products I have ever used. They are specially formulated for every hair type and super-concentrated. I’m not sure I have ever used an Oribe product on my client and they aren’t absolutely in love with their hair. The smell alone keeps people coming back, but it really does what it says it will do. For curly hair, we are also a Ouidad salon. Our color
line, Goldwell, is the only one that actually has hair preserving protein in the color itself. It’s easy to work with, true to tone color that lasts much longer than most. It’s also one of the few color lines that we found to be friendly for people with sensitive skin or color allergies. We also happen to have our own in-salon Goldwell educator as part of our staff, so the education we get for color trends makes us experts in the line. Q: Do Jo Paris Salon stylists participate in any other continuing education? A: Yes. You never stop learning, and we try to expand our knowledge. The staff is constantly choosing to learn new things and stay ahead of the trends. They love what they do, and it shows! Q: Your friendly, hospitable service makes everyone feel comfortable. Why is that important to you? A: Everyone deserves to be pampered. We do have some very prominent clients, but we also have everyday regular people. I wanted to make a place where someone could come in as they are, have a cup of coffee and maybe make a friend while doing it. Our guests can expect that every experience they have with us will be a great one, from their very first visit.

This month, the Valley seemingly comes back to life, and though it may not bring leaves falling or crisp temperatures (yet), the telltale signs of fall still surround us. Pumpkin is popping up all around town, from spa treatments to an enchanting festival to plates of pasta (page 74). A handful of restaurants have reopened after summertime hiatuses with new looks and menus (page 60). Events are in full swing, including charitable festivities (pages 62 and 64), a local Oktoberfest (page 64), and new exhibits. Be sure to check out Desert Botanical Garden’s latest installation that promises to be a sensory experience (page 76). And if your sweet tooth is calling you – after all, Halloween is right around the corner – check out our list of the cutest candy shops around (page 72). Or, dive into the ultimate sweet treat: ZuZu’s Show Stopper Shake (page 107). This frozen delight rotates each month, with October’s taking influence from the state fair. Just bring your appetite and, perhaps, a friend to help devour the goodness. Fall also signals a wardrobe change, and, in case you need some inspiration, we’ve highlighted two seasonal trends (pages 84 and 86) as well as a series of looks curated by local shops (page 88). We also got to know the owners of these shops, who give us a glimpse into their fashionable worlds starting on page 48. The man on our cover, Ignacio “Nacho” Figueras, is no stranger to fashion either. He’s known as the face of Ralph Lauren, having represented its entire line of fragrances as a model. He’s also a father, husband, business owner, and world-famous polo player headlining next month’s Eighth Annual Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships. Read about Figueras’ journey and get the details on The Polo Party, including this year’s newest events, on page 44. However you spend your month, we hope that within these pages you find ways to make it one that’s both memorable and meaningful. THE POWER OF INTENTION
How Scott and Marla Berger’s Tree of Life Movement is changing lives and connecting people
Scott and Marla Berger are no strangers to designing jewelry. It was, however, a welcome surprise when they discovered much more in one of their necklaces – the Tree of Life Intention Stick that has now become the token of an international phenomenon known as the Tree of Life Movement.
The Scottsdale-based husband and wife duo behind Addison Taylor Fine Jewelry hasn’t always been in the business of crafting luxury jewelry or creating global movements. After owning a successful cheesecake company, the Bergers found a passion for filling people with joy, and, from there, Scott transitioned into

Pulse UP CLOSE the jewelry industry, where, together, they have been designing jewelry for decades. The Tree of Life Intention Stick is a result of a design Scott created for Marla as an anniversary present, and it has evolved into a way to bring together their love of creating gorgeous jewelry while uniting mankind through the power of intentions. Taking inspiration from their four children, the Bergers began sharing a message of empowering others to create a better world, which has now had a global ripple effect. By allowing people to come together regardless of religion, race or societal barriers, the Tree of Life Movement is much more than its namesake necklace. The Bergers believe there is a healing power by wearing your intentions close to your heart. Each pendant is carefully designed to be used as a way to open one’s heart and allow the intentional words placed inside to inspire change within oneself, others and the world. The intention sticks are available in metals including rose gold, copper and stainless steel and can be filled with any combination of 22 powerful words that come with the necklace – words like success, health, love, faith, gratitude and light. Once the words are picked out and placed in the stick, the belief is that the wearer is open to letting those intentions in and to receiving their effects. “We do what we do because it allows us to inspire people to live a life of intention, meaning and purpose,” Marla says. “When you can inspire someone, they can inspire another.” In today’s world, most people can agree it’s refreshing to find something designed to unify us all, no matter our differences. Scott shares, “Everyone is going through something, and by keeping your intentions close to your heart, it radiates positivity and love, allowing oneself to be filled back up with what they have been so desperately in need of.” In line with radiating positivity, for every Intention Stick sold, a tree is planted in disaster areas around the world to signify new life. Even the production process is green – each Intention Stick is designed with sustainable materials so as to not harm the environment during its manufacturing process. In addition to taking care of Mother Earth, a percentage of proceeds from Tree of Life Intention Sticks go back to charities in the community – locally, nationally and globally. In Arizona, the Bergers partner with Gompers, an organization of adults with cerebral palsy, autism and Down syndrome to provide those people with the opportunity of employment by fulfilling each order with love.
Sharing the Movement Over a year ago, Scott and Marla were among a select group of visionaries from around the world invited to England’s Windsor Castle, by the Royal Family themselves no less, to advise the family on how to heal the world. After returning from a four-day stay at the castle, the Bergers we were made International Leadership Fellows of St. George’s House and Windsor Castle. It was during this experience that they got to see the effect their Tree of Life Movement was having firsthand from the other side of the globe. “The amount of times people tell us that they are connecting with others because they notice someone else has an Intention

Stick is beyond words,” Scott says. “This has evolved into something beyond what we could have ever dreamed.” The Tree of Life Movement aims to create a worldwide spiritual awakening to connect people, and Marla says that the journey of launching the movement is a testimony to the power of the law of attraction. “There’s nothing better than sharing in the stories of healing from people that have experienced the power of the Intention Stick,” Marla says. “Whether it’s physical health issues or emotional hardships, there is nothing that cannot be addressed and improved by unleashing the power of positive thinking.” From people who have found improvements to chronic diseases to friends finding great success in their professional lives, the stories that have been shared with the Bergers as a result of wearing an Intention Stick are what they find to be the most gratifying. “Marla and I are excited to wake up each day to see what beautiful new souls are brought into our lives and see how we can help, heal or touch one more person,” Scott says. Both Scott and Marla have faith that the Tree of Life Movement will not only help people heal themselves, but that it will also help those who have been healed connect with those around them. Besides working to unify the world one person at a time, the Bergers and their company have an equally as great goal: To get an Intention Stick to every person on earth and to have it in every language, including brail, thereby giving everyone the power to live with intention. Learn more about the Bergers and join the movement at www.intentionstick.org.
"Who Did Your Hair?" Scottsdale’s Hair Color Guru, Rod Gentry, is the go-to expert for coloring your tresses
Hair color is tricky. Ensuring the perfect shade, finishing the process with hair that is still healthy, creating the perfect look—there are not many who can do it all or who are known as the go-to expert in color. But now Scottsdale has a color guru. Rod Gentry, one of the industry’s color experts, has relocated from Chicago— where he spent 24 years working in the field—to Scottsdale.
HIS WEALTH OF KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERTISE WILL ALLOW THEM TO ACHIEVE THE LOOK THEY WANT; AND THAT THE COLOR WILL BE PERFECT, EVERY TIME. His clients know four main things about Rod: They’ll receive undivided, personalized attention at their appointment (no double booking!); he’ll use only the top and best products to ensure their hair stays healthy; his wealth of knowledge and expertise will allow them to achieve the look they want; and that the color will be perfect, every time. Rod approaches hair color differently than others, first working with a client to determine the look they want, and then taking into account the client’s complexion and lifestyle to make sure that the end result will be something that is both flattering and workable. One of his main focuses is always on the health of the hair, and so he uses only high-end, enzyme-based
developers (rather than peroxide-based ones) so that hair is left in a better condition, and extremely shiny. He also always finishes a color process with a conditioning treatment as part of the color service. “You can have long hair and great color, but if it’s damaged, it won’t look as good,” he explains. He relentlessly pursues education to stay at the top of his field, traveling worldwide to learn about the newest innovative techniques, products and knowledge, training in such places as London and New York. “I really think that education is the key to success,” he explains. Rod’s services include single process color, highlights, color gloss, color paneling, ombre, extended conditioning, color correction, color removal and more, as well as cuttingedge haircuts. “I guarantee my work. Period,” he says.
Full-service designer and hair color specialist Rodney Gentry can be reached at StainD in Sachi Studios, 10201 N Scottsdale Rd., Scottsdale, AZ 85253. Call 480.639.2000 to make an appointment or visit www.rodneygentry.com for further information.

Kristen Shroyer helps make the world a better place one bottle of wine at a time
BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE
From convincing friends to buy wine out of the back of her car to being one of the founding members of ONEHOPE Wine (www.onehopewine.com), a worldclass winery located in the heart of Napa Valley, Kristen Shroyer is a fourth-generation Arizonan on a mission. Born and raised in Scottsdale, Shroyer grew up working in the restaurant industry. She eventually left the demanding hospitality hours behind after college, accepting a job selling wine in high-traffic grocery stores. It was there she met her ONEHOPE co-founders and the idea of distributing wine with a philanthropic twist was born. The company’s mission is to bring together a community that makes the world better place through memorable wine and experiences. With that, each ONEHOPE product supports a charitable cause. “Our award-winning wines portfolio is primarily produced in collaboration with Rob Mondavi Jr., and, to date, we’ve donated more $3 million to our partner nonprofits,” shares Shroyer, who, beyond co-founding ONEHOPE, also serves as its vice president of national accounts. Beyond that, to date, ONEHOPE has provided 56,915 homes for shelter animals, more than 2 million meals for children, over 200,000 lifesaving vaccines, 105,044 trees for reforestation projects and more. It’s taken a lot of hard work to get ONEHOPE to where it is today, and Shroyer promises the wine industry isn’t one big glamorous party. “It’s been an extremely challenging road building a business in such a competitive industry with a very difficult distribution system,” Shroyer says. “However, I’ve been fortunate enough to meet some amazing people and having a delicious sample in your wine bag at the end of the day is pretty great, too.” Known for their signature, glittery bottles of wine, ONEHOPE is gearing up for the holidays with limited-edition gift sets and private in-home parties that make an impact in the community by raising funds for a cause the party host cares about. On top of the donations built into every product, an additional 10 percent of event order sales go toward a nonprofit of a person’s choice. “Our community is what makes us unique,” Shroyer says. “There are many great wine companies out there, but we have a bigger mission of making the world a better place as we drink great wine.”

Web designer Leeah Murray builds heart-centered brands and websites
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE
True stars shine bright, especially on dark nights. And growing up, rising star Leeah Murray had a lot of dark nights (and days). “I came from an abusive household and grew up without my mother. If not for my grandma, who knows where I would be,” says Murray, whose grandmother stepped in to help raise her with a keen sense of curiosity. Curiosity, coupled with creativity, led Murray to computers. “As a pre-teen, I found myself obsessed with graphics, quickly learning that if I taught myself HTML I could translate those skills into a purposeful website,” Murray says. By age 14, Murray had web design skills far beyond her years. Murray enrolled at Pima Community College to study computers after graduation, but found she was required to take beginner classes. Uninspired at school, she started designing websites part time. “Before I knew it, I had a book of business,” Murray says. She soon left the college environment behind to concentrate on work full time. She would spend the next several years building her business, as well as working for others now and then, but by 2012, at 27 years old, she reached a crossroads. “My past still haunted me,” says Murray, referring to her childhood trauma. “It bled into my business, leading me to set poor boundaries and get taken advantage of more than I would like to admit.” Done running from it, Murray began working through her issues, embracing spiritual healing modalities such as the study of mindfulness and even reiki. “It did not happen overnight, but by 2016 my soul felt at peace,” says Murray, who started her company, Meraki & Co. (www.merakiand.co), that same year. Through Meraki – Greek for the soul, creativity, love and essence of yourself put into your work – Murray does far more than graphics, web design and web development. She helps entrepreneurs find the soul of their businesses and translates that into an online platform including websites and social media. “We offer life coaching, mindful marketing and design, and workshops to help people develop their brands in a holistic, purposeful way,” says Murray, now happily married to a fellow techie. “We want to help others find their light, and then use our skills to assist them in shining it brightly for the world to see.”

A WILL-POWERED WARDROBE
Entrepreneur Will Armijo’s sense of style is an extension of his business BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY BEVERLY SHUMWAY LOCATION: THE SCOTTSDALE RESORT AT MCCORMICK RANCH
At first glance, Will Armijo – the founder of Will-Powered (www.willpoweredathletes. com), a global online nutrition consulting company – may seem like he lives in gym clothes, but the witty, dog-loving entrepreneur will bark at any chance to put on a custom suit or tailored sport coat. Describing his style as bold and intuitive, Armijo keeps his look athletic, comfortable and classy – dressing with purpose and erring on the side of overdressing. And as a business owner in the wellness space, he’s a walking billboard for his brand. “In this industry you have to talk the talk and walk the walk,” Armijo says. “I have to be versatile enough to stay trendy within the fitness industry but also suit up for business meetings and networking.” Armijo takes his fashion sense beyond the gym with well-fitted T-shirts, trendy sneakers, and a few designer favorites including a Louis Vuitton travel duffle. Humble at heart, Armijo credits his stylist and tailor, among others, for helping hone his overall look. “I have a good fashion sense, but I’m not a fashion expert. I am a nutrition and business expert,” Armijo says. “Having good people around you will help elevate your style and magnify your energy.”
What will we see you in on weekends versus workdays? Nothing changes. My “uniform” will always match my vibe. What are your favorite patterns and trends? I’m a huge fan of custom-fitted comfort with a little bit of class. Nothing feels better than being versatile and having the confidence to know you can switch environments with ease. Who inspires your style? The Rock. He wears the clothes; the clothes don’t wear him. The guy can pull off a three-piece suit or a white T-shirt and jeans with the same level of confidence.

MAKING A STATEMENT For Holli Chris, starting over never looked so good
BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY BEVERLY SHUMWAY LOCATION: HYATT REGENCY SCOTTSDALE RESORT & SPA AT GAINEY RANCH
As the stylish owner of Kensington Makeup Artists & Academy (www.kensingtonmakeupacademy.com), Holli Chris has the passion, creativity and perseverance to create a classic style from the ground up. After recently losing the entire contents of her home to a tragic mold incident, the self-described “modern-prepster” has taken a refreshingly optimistic approach to curating new outfits that define her personal style. Armed with a fresh attitude that complements her new wardrobe, Chris is focused on building up the basics in a color palette that maximizes the versatility of her closet. “As a professional [makeup] artist I primarily stick to black, but I love to incorporate a splash of neutral colors such as navy, burgundy, gold and white,” she says. Throughout her transition, Rent the Runway has been Chris’ saving grace, allowing her to wear designer pieces without having to commit to purchasing them. When it comes to nailing down her favorite shops, Chris favors Nordstrom, which is conveniently located just steps away from her makeup academy at Scottsdale Fashion Square. Splendid and Free People are Chris’ go-to brands for high-quality, easy-to-wear basics, while Helmet Lang makes modern layering pieces that she uses to spruce up her signature all-black ensembles by adding variation and texture.
What is your must-have fashion accessory? A good scarf. It adds a playful touch of color, even if you just tie it to your handbag. What is your No. 1 style tip? Add a little spice to your outfit with statement shoes. I have a pair of mustard slip-ons that match nothing, yet look great with everything. What is your most prized possession in your closet? A navy blue Chanel two-piece suit with white piping.

gnacio “Nacho” Figueras was born in Argentina in 1977. “While soccer is far and away the most popular sport in my country, children like me who lived on small farms surrounded by horses often got into playing polo from very young ages,” says Figueras, who began playing himself at age nine just outside of Buenos Aires. By age 17, Europe – and the chance to play professionally – beckoned. “I had a friend already playing professionally in France, and he told me the team was looking for someone with my skill set,” says Figueras, who would go on to play across Europe from 1994 to 1999, dividing his time between continents. Then, in 1999, Figueras made his way to the U.S. to begin playing for the Greenwich Polo Club. “Within the club, I began my American polo career with White Birch, one of their most successful teams historically,” Figueras says. Figueras would also have a chance encounter with fashion photographer Bruce Weber that same year, which would quickly change the course of his entire life. “Bruce shot all of Ralph Lauren’s campaigns,” Figueras says. “Within the year, I was a polo player modeling for the Polo brand, which was pretty kismet.” And he did more than simply model. Over the past two decades, Figueras’ face has become synonymous with the brand, so much so that since 2005, he has been the face of Ralph Lauren’s Black Label line, and since 2009, has represented its

entire line of fragrances. (Take a look at the outline of the man on horseback on the fragrances’ polo logo – that’s Figueras.) His looks would gain more than just Ralph Lauren’s attention. In 2009, Figueras was voted among the most handsome men in the world (ranking second only to Robert Pattinson but beating out Brad Pitt) by the readers of Vanity Fair. That same year, he appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show for an episode titled “Meet the Most Famous People in the World.” More recently, Figueras lent his name – and face on the covers – to a series of romance novels set in the polo world. While he didn’t write them, he did serve as inspiration for the writers as well as provide suggestions on characters and real-world examples of what happens before, during and after matches. To date, there are three Nacho Figueras Presents novels – High Season, Ride Free and Wild One – in print by Hachette Book Group. Today, Figueras plays for the Greenwich Polo Club’s BlackWatch team, which he also co-owns. “The team is named in homage to the Scottish Black Watch regiment that served the British Crown for more than 260 years,” Figueras says. “Like when I first got my start, I still divide my time between continents, living and playing half of the year in the U.S. and then the rest in Argentina, where I also still play as well as serve as an ambassador for the country and run my own businesses.” And that doesn’t even scratch the surface of his projects and works. “My mission is to bring polo to the world, be it through novels,
Figueras is also in the process of launching a polo club in Napa Valley. And, back in his home country, he and his wife have a successful horse-breeding business while raising four children ranging in age from 5 to 18. And then, of course, there is his visit to Scottsdale next month. “I’ve been wanting to be a part of the Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships since its inception, but the timing just never worked out until this year,” says Figueras, who will be playing thanks to the Aspen Valley Polo Club. “Aspen Valley is the event’s three-time defending champion, and I want to help them fight toward number four.” PHOTO BY KYMBERLY BARLOW
modeling or actual hard-fought play,” says Figueras, who went so far as to bring polo to Manhattan – in front the Statue of Liberty, no less – with the founding of the now-annual Veuve Clicquot Manhattan Polo Classic in 2009. Beyond the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic, now in Los Angeles as well as New York and attended by celebrities and sports figures from across the globe, he supports Sentebale, a charity co-founded by the Duke of Sussex (better known in America as Prince Harry) to help children in Botswana and Lesotho, Africa, who live in extreme poverty, especially those living with HIV/AIDS. “I started with Sentebale by playing in charity polo matches with Prince Harry all over the globe with the mission of raising funds for the organization but quickly found myself motivated to action,” Figueras says. “For the past several years, I’ve been proud to serve as an appointed ambassador for the organization, allowing me to bring hope – and even a little polo fun – to the children firsthand.”
THE POLO PARTY
The Eighth Annual Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships: Horses & Horsepower, also known as The Polo Party, will take place Nov. 10 and 11 at WestWorld of Scottsdale. The weekend spectacle will also see model and polo player Ashley Busch, who is married to NASCAR driver Kurt Busch, return to Scottsdale for her second year. Busch will play with the Wales Polo Team, taking on Figueras and the Aspen Valley Polo Club in the signature match on Saturday. There will also be teams from Italy, Santa Ynez Wine Country and Miami joining the Arizona Polo Club, Polo Azteca and Work to Ride, the first all African-American high school polo champions in U.S. history. The inspirational story of Work to Ride has been featured on 60 Minutes, HBO and ESPN. “Saturday will have four matches with two on Sunday including the final match, The International, which will feature the best players from the weekend playing each other for the highest goal match of the event,” Figueras says. The International will be preceded by a “Battle of the Sexes” match in honor of the late Sunny Hale, who is considered one of the greatest female polo players of all time and who played in the Scottsdale event on two occasions. Last year, more than 13,000 people enjoyed The Polo Party, with even more expected this year, thanks in great part to Figueras’ involvement. In addition to Figueras, new additions to the 2018 event will include DJ-infused party tents courtesy of the Scottsdale-based Riot Hospitality Group; a Champagne-tasting experience in the Barrett-Jackson Champagne and Jazz Lounge; and a fashion, art and beauty tent – the F.A.B. – featuring a pop-up art gallery by Scottsdale-based Larsen Art Gallery and Auction, sideline manicures by Talking Stick Resort Spa, and fashion displays by Evan’s Furs, LoveOverH8 and more. There will also be a new pop-up sports bar, Hall Pass, allowing sports fans to catch football games while also watching polo. Fan-favorite returning events include The Canine Couture Dog Fashion Show, The World’s “Longest” Catwalk Fashion Show by Phoenix Fashion Week, a preview of the 2018 Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction, PRIME: A Luxury Tent Experience by Neiman Marcus, and the Molina Fine Jewelers VIP Tent. Anchoring the weekend festivities will be The Sunday Brunch: Presented by Scottsdale Maserati. Find more information and purchase tickets to The Polo Party at www.thepoloparty.com. So Scottsdale! Carine Wang Owner of Carine Describe your style. Casual, classy and contemporary. What’s your go-to look? I look for chic and unique styles with good design, made to accentuate the positives and minimize the negatives! Simple and elegant is the important rule to follow, and comfortable fabrics are a must. I like to put two unusual pieces together – a top with a skirt or pants that can be worn in different combinations every time. Favorite brands or designers: My own, of course! But I also like to mix and match other top brands that I carry in my stores like Joseph Ribkoff, Cartise and Eva Varro. Occasionally, I will also wear high-end pieces from designers like Helmut Lang. Best fashion advice: Buy clothes with a correct cut. This simple principle is often overlooked by fashion buyers and retailers alike, but if the cut is wrong, a garment will simply never look good on your body. It is also better to buy a smaller number of good pieces than to have a closet full of junk. What trends are you seeing for fall? Bell pants are back in style – we are seeing a resurgence of ’60s and ’80s looks. Pants in general are offering a lot of embellishments and interesting designs. In jewelry, big earrings are hot this year. What makes your store unique? Attention to detail – finding the right cut and fit for each individual customer is the key to our success. We now carry many of my own designs under the Carine and Newport by Carine labels, along with the top designer brands our customers have come to expect in our stores. Why is fashion your passion? I feel very happy helping women transform their images. I have been involved in the fashion business since age 15, and it continues to grow more fun and interesting every year.

Hilda Bourdamis Owner of Classy-Jazzy Cutique Describe your style. Trendy, fun and daring. What’s your go-to look? All black and lots of accessories. Black is always a good color choice. It can take you from day to evening, and you can dress it up or down. Favorite brands or designers: Saint Laurent. Some of my favorite brands sold at Classy-Jazzy are Frank Lyman and Mumu. Best fashion advice: Wear something properly fitted that suits your personality with colors that complement your skin tone. What trends are you seeing for fall? Yellow is a hot color, leather and metallic looks are in, and scarves are very popular. What makes your store unique? Our store name suits the style of our fashion offerings: classy and jazzy. We like a mix of European and American fashion to provide a distinctive look. Why is fashion your passion? Since my youth, I’ve always enjoyed fashion and dressing up myself and others. I have enjoyed a long career in the industry, from owning my own shop in Dubai to opening Classy-Jazzy in 2007.

Ann Siner & Tess Loo CEO and founder (Ann); chief fashion officer (Tess) of My Sister’s Closet Describe your style. AS: Casual, natural and comfortable. TL: Unpredictable. What’s your go-to look? AS: Jeans and boots with a denim jacket. TL: A black silk blouse with a pencil skirt, heels, and pretty underpinnings always. Favorite brands or designers: AS: Loro Piana, Celine, Tom Ford and The Row. TL: Dior, Chanel, Frame, Jil Sander and Gianvito Rossi. Best fashion advice: AS: Get a full-length mirror and a handheld mirror so you can see yourself front and back before you leave the house. TL: The best accessory a woman can own is her self-confidence. Always wear a smile and a positive attitude, and stand strong with your personal style. What trends are you seeing for fall? Both: Plaid, Western, sequins all the time, peacock hues, animal print, leather, lace-up boots, and sneakers. What makes your store unique? Both: You can shop our racks with thousands of items and not see the same thing twice. My Sister’s Closet is truly a candy store for grown-ups with lots of sweet deals. Why is fashion your passion? TL: That’s like asking someone what creates chemistry between two people. My passion is a natural as that. I was born with a handbag in my tiny little baby hand and always loved clothes, bags, shoes and just being a girlie girl. Fashion is a way of self-expression. It’s another form of creativity … of putting together looks and making a statement.

Taucha Silk Owner/buyer of Mae & Marie Describe your style. Fun, edgy, chic and sexy. What’s your go-to look? A great pair of jeans, a T-shirt, a blazer or leather jacket, and amazing heels plus some great jewels. Done and done! Favorite brands or designers: Gucci has been killing it with their street style and eveningwear the past year. Chanel because it’s classic. Alexander McQueen for special events. Oh, and Balmain for fab blazers. Best fashion advice: Always wear what you feel confident in; if you feel uncomfortable, you won’t be able to enjoy an event or your day. Also, all trends are not for all people so do what works for your body type. What trends are you seeing for fall? This season is all about animal print! Dress it up or down; wear a little or a lot. Also, pair Western booties with a dress or some leather pants and you’re good to go. What makes your store unique? We try to make Mae & Marie feel warm and inviting. We have clients who come by regularly just to say hi. I’m beyond fortunate to have some amazing ladies working beside me that help the store achieve this “feel” day after day. Why is fashion your passion? It’s a way to express yourself on a daily basis to whomever you come into contact with. Like I tell my kids, you never know who you’ll run into so always be dressed to impress.

Chrissy Sayare Co-owner of To Be Continued… Describe your style. A mix of classic and unpredictable, old and new. What’s your go-to look? For travel, you can find me in skinny leather pants, a fitted blazer, and funky but comfy shoes. For work, my style is all over the place. One day you’ll find me in a classic silhouette and the next I’ll be in something frilly and short and the next a maxi dress. Favorite brands or designers: Dior, Chanel, Alexander McQueen, Adriana Iglesias, and Daniela Corte. Best fashion advice: First, dress for the life you want to live. The world responds accordingly to how you present yourself. Buy unique accessories that tell your story. For me, it’s my rings. They tell a lot about my life and remind me of my loves, travels and life experiences. What trends are you seeing for fall? I’m seeing a lot of neon shoes and boots and very funky footwear in general. It’s all very fun! What makes your store unique? We scour the globe in search of the most coveted designer pieces in the marketplace. This includes previously loved items from our fashion-loving consignors, last season’s pieces from some of the chicest boutiques in the world, and we feature some very cool emerging designers’ collections through trunk shows. Why is fashion your passion? I have always loved fashion. I believe in the power of great clothes. I believe that what you are wearing can dictate how the world around you is going to treat you. I believe it is an awesome form of self-expression.

Carla Pelosi Owner of Boutique Bully Describe your style. Chic and fun with a touch of class. What’s your go-to look? Lately, I love being in dresses with fabulous accessories and I love the rompers that are in this season. Favorite brands or designers: Michael Kors, Gucci and Valentino. For clothing, I love finding different items; the brand doesn’t matter. I find what works for me and go with that. Best fashion advice: I have always said you have to feel good about whatever you put on. Whatever you’re wearing makes all the difference in your attitude. My fashion advice is to put clothing on that flatters your body and makes you feel good. What trends are you seeing for fall? Jumpsuits, rompers, floral tops and orange is the new black this fall. What makes your store unique? I get new items in every week so my store is always changing with new things, and it never looks the same from week to week. My inventory is streamlined to always give my clients something new to look at every time they return. Why is fashion your passion? My passion is to make women feel good about themselves when they leave my store. I have had my store for eight years now and I want to keep it alive, while continuing to help women, year after year.

Kettey Tagoe-Ofori Owner of Kettey’s International Fashion Describe your style. Chic, cute, simple and classy. What’s your go-to look? Casual – tops, bottoms, skirts and scarves but with class. Favorite brands or designers: Caractère, Kangra Cashmere, Diana Gallesi and Elena Miro. Best fashion advice: Be yourself because beauty starts from the inside. What trends are you seeing for fall? Bold patterns and plaids. Other trends include mixing textures like plush furs, leathers and wools but in bold colors as well as contrasts like a soft white cashmere top and an eye-catching red skirt. What makes your store unique? We take time to understand our clients, and we believe in fine fabrics and textures to create visual interest and inspiration. Beyond that, services such as alterations for our clients is something most boutiques don’t offer. We also carry lines that are not commonly found in stores. Why is fashion your passion? I believe every woman is unique and a woman’s fashion speaks volumes. Therefore, making another woman feel her best is my ultimate goal.

FOOTBALL FANDOM
It’s football season and Cold Beers & Cheeseburgers hears you loud and clear. The beer and burger joint has added new specials for fans, including $5 Kiltlifter mugs during all Arizona Cardinals games, Thursday night football and trivia deals, and a variety of weekend steals like $5 micheladas and $10 mimosas with a $1 refill – plus brunch from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday and Sunday during football season. As if that isn’t enough, the Old Town Cold Beers recently expanded into the home of its former sister concept, Famous 48, with CBCB Too, which adds 146 seats, 27 TVs, a second bar and another patio. There is even a bus for hometown team fans; you can take it from the Old Town, Paradise Valley or Chandler locations to a Cardinals game for $25 round trip. The bus departs two hours before kickoff and includes beer on the way there. www.coldbeers.com.

Cardinals fans, treat yourself to the ultimate game day experience at the newly renamed State Farm Stadium (formerly University of Phoenix Stadium), where the second phase of a $28 million upgrade debuted this season. The new, upscale concepts build on last year’s luxury upgrades to the club concourse’s 50-yard line lounges and the addition of
two 50-yard line all-inclusive VIP suites, The Flight Lounge (a wine bar), and The Bubble Lounge (the first Champagne bar in an NFL stadium). The latest venues include a private, reservation-only Bird’s Nest lounge with a bar and buffet that looks out onto the stadium’s main entrance, creating a sensation of floating above the activity,

plus The Tail Feather, a speakeasy-style lounge with a full-service bar, rich red walls, plush velvet seating, and ornate finishes. Further enhancements include more bars and dining options as well as updated cabanas. The stadium will continue to evolve with upgrades in preparation for hosting Super Bowl LVII in 2023. www.statefarmstadium.com.
Trading Spaces, the show that helped launch the home makeover craze back in 2000, made its return this year to rave reviews. And its creative carpenter, Ty Pennington, who is also the host of ABC’s Extreme Home Makeover, is now making his debut at another show – the Maricopa County Home & Garden Show, that is. The largest home show in the Southwest will take place at WestWorld of Scottsdale Oct. 19-21. Attendees can catch a meet and greet with Pennington on Saturday and Sunday (Oct. 20 and 21) at 1 p.m., which is free with admission. Beyond that, take part in crafting classes, learn about DIY projects, talk to a master gardener, get your holiday shopping done early at an artisan marketplace, and enjoy free wine tastings. HAPPENINGS AT LA HACIENDA GIVE ME LIBERTY
Last month, La Hacienda by Richard Sandoval at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess reopened to unveil an expansion and update. An expanded lounge and bar includes high-top communal tables along with indoor and outdoor seating areas, and, given that La Hacienda boasts more than 150 tequilas, there’s also an all-new tequila display. Popular menu items are back, including lobster tacos, tableside guacamole and flaming coffees along with new additions like a selection of Barbacoa favorites. Finally, a new cocktail menu features 21 libations, each using less than four ingredients. Be sure to try the new “smoked cocktail” selections. www.scottsdaleprincess.com.
Barbecue hot spot Liberty Station Tavern will open its second location Oct. 1 at DC Ranch Marketplace, taking over the space of its sister concept, Market Street Kitchen. Many elements of Market Street Kitchen will remain, including the restaurant’s beverage program and interior look. As its crown jewel, the eatery will have a 500-gallon, custom-made smoker for churning out meats like Texas-style brisket and St. Louis spare ribs, served daily with traditional sides like honey butter cornbread, coleslaw, and green chile mac and cheese. Be sure to stop in for opening specials Oct. 1-7, including buy one, get one free lunch entrees and penny draft beers or house wine with the purchase of any barbecue item. On Oct. 11, there will be a Hawaiian barbecue and tiki night at 5 p.m., and Oct. 15 will usher in a ribbon-cutting with the Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce at 11:30 a.m. www.libertystationtavern.com.
STEAKHOUSE STYLINGS
As of September, The Phoenician’s J&G Steakhouse is back in business after taking a summertime hiatus for a revitalization. Notable new interior embellishments include a fresh color palette reflecting the desert and a striking glass teardrop chandelier suspended over a red onyx stone bar top. Outdoors, the patio now has ceiling fans, transforming the space into a year-round alfresco dining option. There are also new food and cocktail menus to match. Right now, fall flavors mingle with some savory standouts like the 30-ounce wagyu tomahawk rib-eye steak. www.jgsteakhousescottsdale.com.

More than 30 local restaurants are signed on to take part, each sampling from their fall and winter menus for guests both nights of the event. They include Bryan’s Black Mountain Barbecue, Buffalo Chip Saloon & Steakhouse, Cartwright’s Modern Cuisine, Indigo Crow, El Encanto Mexican Restaurant, Harold’s Cave Creek Corral, Le Sans Souci, The Horny Toad, The City Creamery and many more. There will also be several wine-tasting options. Food and drink sample tickets range from $3 to $5. “This year’s event will also feature a new attraction – a competition called the Head to Tail Cook-Off,” Stein says. “Through it, each participating chef will choose an animal to feature, and then they will be cooking and serving up plates in front of guests’ eyes inspired by the animal.” Competitions will take place each evening with judging by local food experts. “The goal of this year’s added feature is to highlight and honor our local ranches and fishermen, and to utilize the whole

SUGAR RUSH
Indulge your sweet tooth at the cutest of candy shops Halloween isn’t the only time to give into your sugar-loving side, but this month we certainly have candy on the brain. Luckily, there are plenty of shops that dish out candied treats year-round, so get ready to feel like you’ve just won a Willy Wonka golden ticket to the sweetest spots in town.
BY MANDY HOLMES
Old Town Candy & Toys With more than 144 bins of retro candy and old-fashioned treats, it’s all fun and games at Old Town Candy & Toys (www.oldtowncandyandtoys.com). From classic Abba-Zabba taffy to fizzy Zotz, you’re sure to find something to satisfy your sweet (and sour) side at this nostalgic gem. The family-owned store is home to more than just candy, including toys and puzzles sure to bring a smile while satisfying sugar cravings. Rocket Fizz Soda Pop & Candy Shop Blast off at Rocket Fizz (www.rocketfizz.com), which has a whopping 400-plus flavors of sodas and an ever-changing selection of candy from around the world, including Pop Rocks, Necco wafers and Clark Bars. With gag gifts, nostalgic tin signs, and candy from decades past lining the store, a visit here will take your taste buds on a trip down memory lane. IT’SUGAR Nestled next to the fountains at Scottdale Quarter, IT’SUGAR (www.itsugar.com) is a colorful, trendy sweet shop with the likes of gourmet gummies and colossal lollipops. In fact, the store has lots of oversized treats like a 5-pound gummy bear. Sugar-loving visitors can also find tongue-in-cheek gifts and candy-inspired merchandise at this emporium created by the co-founder of the famous Dylan’s Candy Bar. Zak’s Chocolate Internationally award-winning and locally owned Zak’s Chocolate (www.zakschocolate.com) is the only chocolatier in the area – and one of the few in the country – that makes 100 percent of their own chocolate, starting with ethically sourced cocoa beans. At the joint factory and retail shop, everything is done by hand, from sorting cocoa beans to wrapping the chocolate bars to creating truffles, bonbons and brownies. Zak’s even offers a Chocolate 101 class and other events that dive deeper into the craft of making chocolate. Sugar Drop Candy Shop Tucked into OdySea in the Desert, Sugar Drop Candy Shop (www.odyseainthedesert.com) is a vibrant wonderland of candied goods, from life-size lollipops to colorful walls of jelly beans. There are two hopscotch games, a photo booth, and an enormous Adirondack chair for a fun photo op. Buckets overflow with candy like taffy, gummies and chocolate intermingled with snacks like trail mix, chocolate-covered pretzels, and even popcorn pizza topped with candy. XO Confections Almost too pretty to eat, the boxed chocolates at Old Town Scottsdale’s XO Confections (www.xoconfections.com) are truly work of art. Using exotic spices, herbs, teas, fresh fruits, nuts and liquors as well as fine single-origin and blended chocolates, the craftsmen pair these carefully sourced elements to create flavors such as Oceania (cream caramel with sea salt) and St. Marron (chestnut- and honey-infused milk chocolate ganache). The moment you open a box, you can’t help but be impressed by the beauty of the bite-sized artworks.

PUMPKIN EVERYWHERE Spice things up with fall’s favorite flavor
There’s a familiar chill in the air and the days are getting shorter – and with those comes the promise of pumpkin spice everything. From craft beer and pasta to spa treatments, the season’s token staple shows up in many more places beyond the pumpkin patch.
BY MANDY HOLMES
Pasta, Please The versatility of pumpkin provides an earthy flavor for the handcrafted Pumpkin Spice Ravioli ($16) at Tomaso’s When in Rome (www.tomasoswheninrome.com). Stuffed with creamy mascarpone and pumpkin, the sweetand-savory ravioli – which also has pumpkin blended into the pasta itself – brims with rich flavors and is finished in a brown butter sage sauce. It’s the quintessential autumn comfort food and pairs well with a crisp, dry white wine. At the Patch The Halloween spirit has taken over the Town of Carefree from Oct. 19 to 28 with pumpkin carvings by world-renowned sculptor Ray Villafane. The Enchanted Pumpkin Garden (www.carefreepumpkingarden.com) will offer 10 days of free admission to experience mischievous pumpkin characters frolicking in the whimsical Carefree Desert Gardens, handcrafted scarecrows, live pumpkin carving, and a colossal carved pumpkin clocking in at more than 400 pounds. Activities will include a pumpkin patch, a corn maze, a pumpkin pie eating contest, arts and crafts, and a beer garden. Treat Yourself Rich in beta carotene and vitamin A, the Fall Facial ($90) at Luxury Skin Scottsdale (www. luxuryskinscottsdale.com) helps stimulate circulation, promote healing, and boost collagen production to help skin look as plump as a pumpkin. After the treatment, release toxins while continuing your seasonal spa journey at Onyx Body Shaping & Slim Spa (www.onyxbody. com) with the Pumpkin Ionic Foot Detox ($35), which includes a pumpkin foot scrub and a fall spice essential oil reflexology foot massage. Prost! The Great Pumpkin Beer Day at all four Valley OHSO Brewery + Distillery (www.ohsobrewery. com) locations will take place on Oct. 18 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., where brewers will experiment with more than 20 different styles of pumpkin beer with flavors like pumpkin-spiced latte and peanut butter-pumpkin. Tastings will be available for $1.50 to $2, and the event is free to attend. Slushy Time Trade in your pumpkin spice latte for a Pumpkin Slushy ($10). With a mix of cold brew, vanilla vodka, pumpkin spice purée, and spiced rum cream liqueur – all topped with cinnamon bun cotton candy – this boozy adult slushy is the newest beverage at Hash Kitchen (www.hashkitchen.com). Plus, the concoction is served in a disco ball for an extra festive effect. Glamorous Glow Give your skin the gift of an autumn-infused refresh with the Pumpkin Apple Corrective Facial ($85) at Skinapeel Beauty (www. skinapeelbeauty.com). Packed with rejuvenating nutrients thanks to pumpkin and wine extracts, the treatment imparts a picture-perfect glow to your skin. Enhance this (or any) treatment with a 30-minute Pumpkin Peptide Polish ($70), which evens skin skin tone and texture, perfect for combating end-of-summer beauty woes.

Desert Botanical Garden debuts a new nighttime exhibit uniting the landscape, light and sound
BY HEATHER LYNN HORVAT / PHOTOS BY KLIP COLLECTIVE
Nighttime exhibits at Desert Botanical Garden have become wildly popular in recent years, and this season’s Electric Desert: A Light and Sound Experience by Klip Collective is poised to create a similar buzz through sensory storytelling. Electric Desert, which opens Oct. 12, marks the garden’s third consecutive season of an evening-only exhibit (opens at 6 p.m. nightly) and it’s expected to sell out. The exhibit will take visitors on an immersive nighttime journey through seven site-specific locations throughout the garden, using light and original music to enhance the sensory experience. The locations are at Ottosen Entry Garden, Sybil B. Harrington Cactus and Succulent galleries, Stardust Plaza, Fine Family Contemplation Garden, Sonoran Desert Loop Trail, and the garden’s butte. “I saw Klip Collective’s work at Longwood Gardens [in Pennsylvania] and fell in love with it. I knew instantly that it would look incredible with our plant palette,” says Ken Schutz, executive director of Desert Botanical Garden. “We cannot wait to see how [Klip Collective] will transform our desert plants to lead our guests on an experiential visit through the desert.” Under the creative direction of video artist Ricardo Rivera, Klip Collective is an experiential video shop that incorporates virtual reality, storytelling, projection mapping, and soundscapes to create captivating, immersive sensory experiences. Philadelphia-born but globally based, Klip Collective has created diverse projection experiences across the world. Its installation in the Valley marks its second garden installation; the first being the one at Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania. “Our work is site-specific so we spend a good deal of time on site determining the overall experience,” Rivera says. “Back in our studio in Philly, we create 3-D models of the plants to generate the video content. I work closely with a music composer to create the sounds and audio experience, which drives the pace of the visual content.” Through Electric Desert, cactus and desert will become a living canvas for light and sound in what Rivera refers to as “a treat for the senses.” “We want people to feel what they are feeling and be moved by the sights and sounds around them,” Rivera continues. Electric Desert will run nightly from Oct. 12 through May 12. Since it’s expected to sell out, guests are urged to buy tickets in advance. Ticket options and prices vary. Expert Tax Evaluation for Today’s Complex Economy Joseph Rose, CPA
T
oday’s tax code is a mine field of information and rules. If you are a business owner, the tax code can be even that much trickier to navigate. With the help of a proactive CPA like the president of Rose Tax Consulting, Joseph Rose, affluent individuals and business owners can make highlyinformed important decisions that will place them in the best possible tax position. Rose received a BSBA in accounting from the University of Arizona and serves both the Valley and Tucson. Rose is also a certified tax strategist. Fewer than 300 specialists in 52 states have been awarded this specialized designation from the American Institute of Certified Tax Planners.
Rose has been working in the world of taxes for 25 years and had his CPA designation for most of this time. He has encountered just about every type of tax situation imaginable and relishes the chance to work with his clients in developing a proactive and informed approach with strategies for challenging tax situations. “I just love puzzles and tax code is a big puzzle,” Rose says. Rose offers advanced strategic tax planning to select clientele that are forwardthinking in their business formation and tax approach. “We only work with high-income affluent tax payers, usually business owners, to mitigate their taxes by substantial amounts depending upon their unique situation,” Rose
explains. “The more complex their tax situation is, the more goodies the tax code might have for them!” Conducting a thorough discovery is key as the law restricts Rose from recommending certain tax strategies without first doing intensive due diligence with a potential client. A client intake process starts with a discovery session that will include getting copies of taxes and a preliminary Q&A session with Rose Tax Consulting to see where additional credits and other tax opportunities may exist. “I go through their tax situation and match it up with tax strategies that might be available to them then discuss things in their tax situation that might be of concern under the new tax laws,” Rose says referring to the substantial changes in the new tax laws as of January 2018. Rose shared a recent case where he was able to achieve a massive 80 percent reduction in taxes for the client. This was accomplished through a process of reorganization, income splitting, retirement solutions and proper structuring which allowed the client to maximize their profit. This “found” money allowed the client to meet the expansion needs of their business without the need for financing. Rose’s newest best-selling book “The Great Tax Escape Book: Strategies for Early Planning and a Lower Tax Bill” is available through Amazon.com. “I don’t believe anyone should pay a dime more in taxes than the law requires,” Rose finishes. Rose Tax Consulting is located at 6424 E. Greenway Pkwy., Suite 100, Scottsdale. Call 480.210.2623 or visit www.RoseVFO.com for additional information.

Luxe WHEELS
2018 MASERATI LEVANTE An SUV that screams la dolce vita BY JIM PRUETER
VITAL STATS Base price: $75,980 Engine: 3.0-L V-6
Maserati, an Italian automaker with a rich and noble racing heritage delivered by its luxurious high-performance sedans, sports cars and coupes, has, for the first time, added the brand’s trident badge to a much-needed sport utility vehicle. Named Levante (pronounced la-von-tay) for the Mediterranean winds that go from calm to gale force in an instant, it is uniquely Italian and positioned to compete directly against vehicles like Porsche Cayenne and Range Rover Sport. I recently spent time with two of the four Levante trim levels: The 424-horsepower, 3.0liter V-6 S model starting at $86,908 and the 550-horsepower, 3.8-liter V-8 GTS model, starting at $119,980. The base, 345-horsepower Levante starts at $75,980, while the top trim level, Trofeo, with 590-horsepower, starts at $169,980. You would expect a Maserati to be expensive, and while it isn’t cheap, the price isn’t outrageous for a vehicle in this class. Levante is midsized, seating five adults. As expected, the interior is completely trimmed in rich Italian leather. Front seats are especially
98
So Scottsdale! October ‘18
roomy, but that can’t be said for the rear. Levante does not offer a third-row seat, and its cargo area is one of the smallest in its class, with just 19.4 cubic feet of space with the rear seat down. The Italians have a way with style and design, and Levante is no exception, with its highly sculpted, coupe-like body. I knew Levante would sound spectacular and, with Ferrari-built engines, it does. All-wheel drive, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and adjustable air suspension that brings the ride height up to 10 inches of ground clearance are all standard. The driving experience is pure Italian, with handling so precise and capable you’ll forget you’re driving an SUV. The ride is comfortable without feeling either too firm or soft. Performance is thrilling, with strong acceleration off the line reaching 60 mph in just five seconds. Overall, if you’re willing to succumb to the price tag, Levante is an excellent new auto that offers buyers a unique Italian vehicle in the way it looks, feels and performs.
Fuel economy: 14/19 mpg city/ highway Seating: 5 Fab features: Excellently performing engines Incredible agility with luxurious ride Gorgeous Italian styling inside and out

While on an excursion, adventurers can rest-assured that they’re in good hands. Thanks to a high-tech tracking device called Delorme InReach, trekkers can be located on even the most remote trails at any time by the company’s office staff. No matter which adventure you choose, it will be rooted in getting back to nature. For sustenance, though, you won’t be left to forage for your food. Meals are prepared pre-trip in a commercial kitchen or are shelf-stable to ensure they’re safe to eat in the wilderness. Special diets, such as vegetarian and gluten-free, can also be accommodated. Exploration travel certainly fosters personal, and interpersonal, growth. THE HEART OF EUROPE
At the base of the Swiss Alps and surrounded by breathtaking vistas, Zurich is a fairytale destination
BY SUSAN LANIER-GRAHAM
As Switzerland’s largest city, Zurich is an idyllic year-round destination against the backdrop of the spectacular Swiss Alps. In summer months, you can boat on Lake Zurich, bike and walk in the city, swim the lakes and rivers, and relax in expansive outdoor spaces. Winter brings a unique charm, too, with some of Europe’s best ski resorts less than 90 minutes away, warm mineral springs for soaking, and a vast array of cultural experiences. Although it’s an ideal base while exploring the rest of Switzerland, it’s well worth it to spend a few days discovering Zurich’s own charm.
Exploring the Town
PHOTOS COURTESY OF ZURICH TOURISM
Zurich is a quintessential storybook lakefront town, with Lake Zurich on one end and the Limmat River winding its way through Old Town past the massive Grossmünster (meaning “great minister”) church founded in the 8th century by Charlemagne. Climb to the top of the Karlsturm (the southern tower of Grossmünster) to see the city and look across the river for the inspiring tower of Fraumünster Zurich, which dates back to 853. Be sure to cross the river for a visit to gaze quietly at the stained-glass windows by Marc Chagall. As you explore, notice the fountains everywhere – there are about 1,225 public fountains in the city, each offering clean drinking water. Also be sure to walk up the winding cobbled drives on the Right Shore to Lindenhof park, an ideal spot to see down the river to Lake Zurich and the snow-capped Alps. In summer months, visit bathing areas along the river and lake by day, and be sure to return in the evenings when the baths transform into “Badi bars” (open-air bars) offering cocktails and entertainment. The city boasts 50 museums and more than 100 galleries. The National Museum Zurich, located behind the Main Station (Hauptbahnhof, or HB Zurich for short), houses Switzerland’s largest cultural history collection. It’s a great place to get a first glimpse of Zurich’s rich history. Guided walking tours (www.zuerich.com) offer a chance to learn the city’s history while discovering local favorites. If you purchase a Zurich Card, available from the tourist information booth at HB Zurich or at the Zurich Airport, you get up to 50 percent off on tours as well as unlimited travel on Zurich’s public transportation including buses, boats, trains, trams and cableways.
Winter Wonderland You can best experience Zurich’s winter magic at one of the many Christmas markets from mid-November through Christmas Eve. The Hauptbahnhof Christkindlimarkt is the largest indoor

Christmas market in Europe with more than 160 stalls and a larger-than-life tree decorated with 7,000 Swarovski crystals. Zurich’s oldest Christmas market is outdoors in the center of Niederdorf in Old Town. For something different, check out Wienachtsdorf at Sechseläutenplatz, the largest Christmas market overall (indoor and outdoor), with 100 chalets selling upcycled products and ice skating for all ages. Winter is also the ideal time to enjoy a Swiss classic: fondue. While it’s available year-round, there’s something warm and soothing about a traditional Swiss fondue of rich wine and cheese sauce served with a selection of housemade pickles and breads. Another Swiss classic is Zürcher Geschnetzeltes – sliced veal in a white wine cream sauce – served with a side of rösti potatoes. In addition to traditional dishes, Zurich is home to more than 2,000 restaurants with international cuisine.

Luxury Shopping For retail lovers, Zurich is a shopper’s paradise. Stroll down Bahnhofstrasse – the main downtown street and also one of the world’s most exclusive shopping avenues – to discover luxury brands. If you want to take home a Swiss timepiece, step into watch retailer Bucherer and take your pick of top Swiss brands, or go to nearby flagship Piaget or Mont Blanc. For fashion finds, stop into Maison Gassmann, an iconic department store housed in a historic Bahnhofstrasse building. Nearby Grieder, situated inside a Gothic building, is also popular for everything from clothing to housewares. If you prefer more traditional shops, wind along the cobbled streets of Old Town where you can find boutiques filled with clothing, jewelry, arts and crafts.
Stay & Soak B2 Boutique Hotel + Spa (www.b2boutiquehotels.com), located on Zurich’s Left Shore, is quiet and hip, only about five minutes by train from Hauptbahnhof and three tram stops to shopping at Paradeplatz, an area at the center of Bahnhofstrasse. B2 is located in what was once Switzerland’s largest brewery, the Hürlimann Brewery. Order local bites, sample wine and beer, and enjoy complimentary brunch each morning in the wine library, surrounded by 33,000 collectible books and chandeliers made from original Hürlimann beer bottles. All 60 rooms and suites are unique, filled with paintings reflecting the building’s industrial heritage along with classic design elements. Make your way downstairs to Thermal Bath & Spa Zurich, where you can bathe under hundred-year-old stone arches. Soak in the wooden mineral pools or follow the Irish-Roman circuit, where you soak your way through 10 water stations toward ultimate relaxation. The rooftop boasts an open-air infinity pool with breathtaking panoramic views overlooking Zurich. Hotel guests can access the spa through a private elevator and receive a 50 percent discount on admission to the spa plus access to the pool. A STAR IS BORN Gin Bar’s Gin Tonic No. 4 is No. 1
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY ELIZABETH MARIE
Talavera, the signature restaurant of the Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North relaunched as a Spanish steakhouse this past summer. “As part of the relaunch, our beverage team had an opportunity to dream up a new Spanish bar adjacent to Talavera,” says Kelsey Jordan, the resort’s food and beverage assistant manager. Enter Gin Bar. “Spain is the No. 1 consumer of gin per capita,” Jordan says. “A chief reason is their love of the gin tonic, not to be confused with gin and tonic.” Gin tonics are far more aromatic and botanically forward than traditional gin and tonics, and Gin Bar’s menu boasts half a dozen varieties as well as custom, made-on-the-fly options based on a guest’s palate. The Gin Tonic No. 4 ($14) was one of Jordan’s first creations to really take off. “This is a stirred cocktail, built directly in a specialty Riedel gin tonic glass,” says Jordan, who uses No. 209 Gin as the base spirit. He then adds a dehydrated orange wheel, cloves, and both orange and lemon peels to add dimension and create a heavenly perfume wafting from the glass. The addition of Contratto – a bitter, red-hued liqueur with grapefruit notes – pulls out the gin’s botanicals while star anise adds a distinct hint of licorice. “We stir them gently in the glass to open up the flavors and then add FeverTree Tonic Water, which creates a beautiful bitterness and rounds out everything,” Jordan says. The resulting cocktail is equal parts citrusy, bitter, sweet and 100 percent refreshing. Gin Bar at Four Seasons Scottsdale, 10600 E. CHEF CONVERSATIONS In the kitchen with Chrysa Robertson of Rancho Pinot
Executive chef Chrysa Robertson leads Rancho Pinot, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this fall, in crafting seasonally inspired cuisine with thoughtfully chosen homegrown ingredients.
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY ELIZABETH MARIE
How did you first get into cooking? I am the oldest of five children. When our mom went back to work, it was really on me to help out at home, especially in the kitchen. I guess when I walked in, I just never walked back out! Tell us about your culinary journey. I got my start working under Carol Steele, widely known as the godmother of the local culinary scene, for nine years. In 1990, I moved to Los Angeles to work under James Beard Award winner Nancy Silverton at the acclaimed Campanile, and then made my way to Napa to work with Hiro Sone, also a James Beard winner, at Terra. By 1993, I was ready to open my own concept, so I moved back here and made it happen. How would you describe your food to someone who has never been to Rancho Pinot? We are Arizona. Like Arizona itself, we are a melting pot of diverse flavors. We love using local ingredients to pay homage to the smells and tastes of everywhere from here in the Southwest to Mexico and the Mediterranean. Tell us about some of the work you’ve done as an advocate for the Arizona food scene. In 1998, I started the Phoenix chapter of Slow Food, an organization dedicated to the pleasures of the table and to the preservation and sustainability of regional culinary and food-producing traditions. I am also a member of Women Chefs & Restaurateurs, which supports women in food and beverage by creating experiences that bring women together to propel their careers forward. How are you celebrating Rancho Pinot’s 25th anniversary? Every Thursday in November (except Thanksgiving), I’ve dreamt up dinner events to shine a light on various aspects of my career. The first event will feature female chefs who have worked here in the past and are coming back to cook together for one night only. Rancho Pinot, 6208 N. LITTLE DEVILS The most delish deviled eggs in the Valley
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ
Liberty Station Tavern at DC Ranch
Deviled Eggs, $9 This take on the classic dish will please even the most ardent egg traditionalist. The smoked paprika and Tabasco add a little heat, which is then perfectly balanced by the creaminess of the blended yolks and the crunch of bacon. These crowd pleasers are on the menu at Liberty Station’s newest location, now open at DC Ranch. 20285 N. Pima Road, Scottsdale; 480.278.7044; www.libertystationtavern.com.
Salty Sow
Truffled Deviled Eggs, $7 The truffled deviled eggs are always an egg-cellent, nontraditional choice and easily shareable. The appetizer uses some unexpected ingredients like sour cream, creole mustard and white truffle oil, with garnishes of housemade bacon crumbles and chopped chives, all centered around arugula. 4801 E. Cactus Road, Scottsdale; 602.795.9463; www.saltysow.com.
PNPK Craft Slider + Wine Bar
The history of deviled eggs began in ancient Rome, where they were an appetizer for the wealthy. They popped up again in 13th-century Andalusia (now Spain) before making their way across Europe. But it wasn’t until the late 1700s when Brits began using the term “devil” to describe boiled and fried dishes with spicy or highly seasoned elements that the term “deviled egg” caught on. And believe it or not, the dish didn’t gain popularity in the U.S. until the 1940s. Until recently, the flavorful finger food was often relegated to summer barbecues or as an Easter appetizer, but it is now inspiring the creativity of chefs across the nation. Deviled eggs are all the rage in the Valley right now, with chefs taking great pride in getting clever with their eggy creations. Here are some of the places to bite into unique takes on this time-tested dish.

Devilish Eggs, $6 or $11 PNPK focuses on offering nearly all menu items – food and drink – in flights. Among the most popular of all the flights is the Devilish Egg option, which gives guests a choice of seven twists on the picnic classic, including eggs featuring wasabi and citrus slaw, smoked salmon with capers, bacon jam with caramelized onions, and candied bacon with jalapeno. Try three for $6 or all seven for $11. 23335 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; 480.305.0907; www.pnpkaz.com.
Ingo’s Tasty Food
Toni’s Deviled Eggs, $3.50 Inspired by classic German beer garden fare, Toni’s Deviled Eggs at Ingo’s are made with stone-ground German mustard, cornichons and pickled beets – flavors that are instantly recognizable in the region’s dishes. The addition of goat cheese lends a luxurious texture and toasted hazelnuts provide a crunch. 4502 N. 40th St., Phoenix; 602.795.2884; www.ingostastyfood.com.
Village Tavern
Pimiento Cheese Deviled Eggs, $11.25 In the Southeast, pimento cheese reigns as among the most beloved of spreads. But in the Southwest, the combo of shredded cheese, mayonnaise and diced red pimentos is a rarity. In an homage to the Southern staple, Village Tavern combines it with egg yolks and applewood-smoked bacon to make a rich, flavorful appetizer. 8787 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; 480.951.6445; www.villagetavern.com.
Bandera
Deviled Eggs, $7 Bandera is part of the Hillstone Restaurant Group, which was founded by George Biel, and, in each of their concepts, they use his grandmother’s cinnamon-bud pickle relish recipe in everything from coleslaw to burgers to – you guessed it – deviled eggs. The recipe is top secret but known for its spice, and it, combined with scallions, makes for a blazing hot deviled egg. 3821 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; 480.994-3524; www.banderarestaurants.com.
Spoke and Wheel
Chelsea’s Kitchen
Deviled Eggs, $5 or $8 As one of the most popular appetizers at Chelsea’s Kitchen, these deviled eggs take their lead from traditional varieties and certainly don’t disappoint. Spicy yellow mustard, homemade mayonnaise, and sweet pickle relish make the foundation. Then, they’re topped off with Turkish paprika and fresh herbs from the garden. Pro tip: Add bacon! Get three for $5 or six for $8. 5040 N. 40th St., Phoenix; 602.957.2555; www.chelseaskitchenaz.com.
Tavern Deviled Eggs, $6.75 With Southwest flair, this American-style restaurant and bar starts with a classic deviled egg recipe as its base. Then, things get interesting – the eggs are topped with bacon, capers, sweet chili and even sun-dried tomatoes. Piled sky-high, the eggs look like a work of art and taste even better with the marriage of heat from the chili, tanginess from the tomatoes, and a pop of saltiness from the capers. 8525 N. Central Ave., Phoenix; 602.870.8860; www.spokeandwheeltavern.com.

MEET MEATBALLZ Comfort food and craft beer rule the menu at this new eatery
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ
A first-generation American, Bob Zdravkovski grew up working in his parents’ bakery in Michigan. “It not only kept me out of trouble, but it also gave me a passion for both food and entrepreneurship,” Zdravkovski says. “But, given it was Michigan, I got my start in business like so many do – in automobiles.” Zdravkovski worked for Ford Motor Company in the 1990s and early 2000s, but when he got the chance for a buyout from the company in 2008, he jumped at the opportunity to turn his attention to the restaurant industry, launching a string of successful eateries in Pittsburgh with a business partner who lived in the area. “We were a hit! So much so, in fact, that a competitor made us an offer we couldn’t refuse,” says Zdravkovski, who sold the business in 2015 and moved to Scottsdale in 2016. “For all intents and purposes, I was retired, but I quickly grew restless.” He was also eager to learn about his new home, so he took on a unique hobby: driving for Uber. “Once I got my bearings, I had that entrepreneurial itch yet again,” says. By late 2017, he was approached

about getting back into the restaurant business. This time in Scottsdale. “There are already so many great burger spots, traditional sports bars, pizza joints and steakhouses in town, so I wanted to do something different,” Zdravkovski says. “So, we came up with the idea of pairing meatballs with our favorite craft beers, and Meatballz was born.” Meatballz (spelled with a “Z” in homage to Zdravkovski’s name) opened in late July, offering beef, chicken, spicy pork, vegan and even gluten-free meatball options made from scratch daily with dozens of sauces ranging from mushroom gravy to pesto cream. They are available in a slider, as a grinder (baked with sauce and cheese), on their own, or over any side dish. The menu also has poutine, salads and sides like tater tots, loaded fries and crispy Parmesan Brussels sprouts. On the drink front, there are two dozen craft beers on tap as well as additional varietals in bottles, plus wines by the bottle and glass. In mid-September, Meatballz launched a menu of craft cocktails using Arizona-distilled spirits in libations like margaritas and spiked Arnold Palmers. The space is equipped with Wi-Fi, and the patio is dog-friendly. With concrete floors and tables, the interior has an industrial feel and is tailor-made for football lovers with 11 flat-screen TVs on the walls. “We open at 9 a.m. for NFL fans every Sunday, and we will offer special pricing on buckets of beer as well as other food and drinks each week,” says Zdravkovski, noting happy hour is offered daily from 3:30 to 7 p.m. with $1 off all craft cocktails and wines as well as deals on individual meatballs and sliders. Regular hours are Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Meatballz, 7342 E. Shea Blvd., Scottsdale; 480.306.8600; www.meatballzinc.com.
