Parisian

Perfection A one-on-one interview with renowned French stylist Jo, owner of Jo Paris Salon

J

o Paris Salon features the lavish, luxurious surroundings you would expect in any upscale locale, but there’s a crucial difference within the welcoming atmosphere, suffused with a familial warmth that puts you instantly at ease. And the differences don’t end there; in every facet of the experience is the evidence of a deeply connected team, each member striving to provide premium-quality services and unforgettably gracious treatment. The salon is the kind of place its owner and namesake, Jo, had always dreamed of opening. With an innate sense of beauty and talent, he began his career in Paris mentored by France’s most celebrated stylists. After moving to Cannes, Jo quickly gained an illustrious reputation as the premier stylist of the Cannes Film Festival, where he spent a decade styling celebrity clientele. But it was another move, this time to Arizona, that led him to open Jo Paris Salon – and the Valley has never looked better. We sat down with Jo to find out a few things about his salon, his stylists, and which products he can’t live without. Q: Your salon has quite a sizeable staff. How do you choose your stylists? A: I make sure that we don’t have a revolving door of stylists. We try to make sure we hire stylists with years of experience who add something to the team. Everyone has a specialty, and we try to showcase that strength – we are one of the few salons that can accommodate just about any client with any kind of hair. Q: So you have specialists for every need? Amazing! What services do you offer? A: We offer almost anything. Color, cuts, extension, ombre, balayage, perms, relaxer, keratin treatments, updos and Olaplex. We offer services to men, women, and children. We also have an amazing aesthetician and offer Microblading. Q: With such a variety of services, you must use a lot of products. Are there certain lines you swear by? A: We use four different styling lines. The most prestigious line we offer, and we are incredibly proud to have, is Oribe – they’re the best products I have ever used. They are specially formulated for every hair type and super-concentrated. I’m not sure I have ever used an Oribe product on my client and they aren’t absolutely in love with their hair. The smell alone keeps people coming back, but it really does what it says it will do. For curly hair, we are also a Ouidad salon. Our color

line, Goldwell, is the only one that actually has hair preserving protein in the color itself. It’s easy to work with, true to tone color that lasts much longer than most. It’s also one of the few color lines that we found to be friendly for people with sensitive skin or color allergies. We also happen to have our own in-salon Goldwell educator as part of our staff, so the education we get for color trends makes us experts in the line. Q: Do Jo Paris Salon stylists participate in any other continuing education? A: Yes. You never stop learning, and we try to expand our knowledge. The staff is constantly choosing to learn new things and stay ahead of the trends. They love what they do, and it shows! Q: Your friendly, hospitable service makes everyone feel comfortable. Why is that important to you? A: Everyone deserves to be pampered. We do have some very prominent clients, but we also have everyday regular people. I wanted to make a place where someone could come in as they are, have a cup of coffee and maybe make a friend while doing it. Our guests can expect that every experience they have with us will be a great one, from their very first visit.

Jo Paris Salon & Spa is located at 14202 N. Scottsdale Rd. and at (480) 663-8994 or visit their website at www.joparissalon.com

TELL

An unintentional theme woven throughout this issue is community. It was only when writing this note and taking in the contents as a whole that I had this realization. Community is one of the pillars in Joe Pizzimenti’s redefined five Cs of Arizona (page 23). Community is at the heart of the work done by Kim Marie, who, in her cover story, shares the winding path she took into film production and why this art form is so impactful (page 38). Community is exactly what coworking spaces (page 82) are intended for, to give solopreneurs and workfrom-home folks a place in which to connect. Likewise, community is fostered at fitness studios and festivals (pages 80 and 76), happenings like The Powerhouse Women Event (page 70), and through shared travel experiences (page 95). As for our feature on general managers (page 42), there is no doubt that their careers are rooted in community – creating a communal atmosphere for family and friends at the front of the house and doing the same for their backof-the-house teams. Every year, September ushers in a season of charitable giving through galas, luncheons and soirees, many of which are included within these pages. Community is the foundation of them all. Beyond these, our magazine itself is all about community – this community and the people who call it home. It’s a theme that’s truly at the core of every issue, and we promise to keep that tradition going. ALL ABOUT ARIZONA

Joe Pizzimenti breathes new life into the state’s famed five Cs with a passion project called AZ5C

Joe Pizzimenti loves Arizona. But, like so many of us, he is no native. Pizzimenti grew up in a blue-collar Italian family with five older brothers and a younger sister in Detroit, where the family business was in auto supplies.

“For the rest of my family, it was a no-brainer to work for the family after high school, but I just knew it wasn’t my path,” says Pizzimenti, who moved here sight unseen in 1984 to attend Arizona State University. During this time, Arizona lived up to its famous five Cs:

So Scottsdale! September ‘18

Pulse UP CLOSE cotton, cattle, citrus, copper and climate. “There were cotton fields, cattle farms and citrus groves as far as the eye could see,” Pizzimenti says. “And the year before I moved down here, there was a massive copper mine strike, so certainly that C was front and center as well.” Of course, there was also the climate. “I lived for the heat of the summers – and all that time in the pool. And I woke up every winter morning thanking my lucky stars that there was no snow to shovel,” Pizzimenti says. When he graduated, however, the family still expected him to come back to Detroit long term. “Somehow, at just 22, I gathered the courage to tell my massive family no and set out to make my own way in New York City,” says Pizzimenti, who moved to the Big Apple in 1987, eventually earning a marketing position with WNEW-FM, the then-top rock station in the country. His radio career would explode over the next five years, eventually taking him back to lead a team in Michigan, but he never forgot his happy place: Arizona. “I had to find my way back. It was now or never at that time, so, in 1992, I picked up and moved my entire life to the Valley for good,” Pizzimenti says. He eventually joined KTAR-AM’s team before opening up his own graphic design firm, Square 1 Design. In the late 1990s, websites were still a relatively new “fad,” but Pizzimenti – now a father to three young Arizona natives – rightly felt they were the future and slowly transitioned the business. In fact, in 1999, his team built Scottsdale Healthcare’s first real web presence. “My team would soon partner with a massive national outfit, which gave us the chance to work with everyone from Dial Corp. and Best Western to Adidas and Intel when it came to branding and design,” Pizzimenti says. In 2001, he broke off and partnered to open Spin Six, which he grew to be one of the most respected digital agencies in the Southwest. But by the mid-2000s, he was ready to do it all – hiring, training, business development and content creation – on his own. Inspired by a painting of a pudgy fish in his office (artwork from the Pee Wee’s Big Adventure movie set, no less), he formed a creative agency, Bigfish Creative Group, in 2006. Pizzimenti’s mission: to be a big fish in what Arizona was starting to become, a much bigger pond. He also wanted to start thinking outside the pond (or, rather, box) when it came to creative concepts and brand storytelling. And though the recession hit him – not to mention the state – hard, Pizzimenti, like Arizona itself, persevered and came out stronger. Today, Bigfish boasts more than 30 employees and a multistory office along 1st Avenue in Old Town Scottsdale. From that perch – in addition to excellent views of Camelback Mountain – Pizzimenti has been able to watch how Arizonans responded to the financial and real estate crisis. “I don’t think I am alone in feeling the electricity pumping through the city, really the entire state. And it surely isn’t being fueled by cattle and cotton anymore,” Pizzimenti says. “It’s time the world knew it, too.”

24

So Scottsdale! September ‘18

Enter Pizzimenti’s passion project: AZ5C, an interactive website, campaign and platform Pizzimenti is using to showcase how far Arizona has come in the areas of culture, community, connectivity, commerce and catalyst. “You can taste it in our chef-driven restaurant and bars, and see it firsthand as new buildings and businesses flood in by the day,” Pizzimenti says. “Arizona is at the forefront of connecting data, ideas, processes and people in new and effective ways. Arizonans are competing, and winning, while at work and at play like never before.” Phase one of AZ5C includes videos detailing each of the new five Cs and then features some of Arizona’s highest-profile business and community leaders including business owners, lawmakers, nonprofit champions and tastemakers sharing their stories of success along with which of the new Cs represent them best. There will also be merchandise available for purchase in mid-September and an extensive traditional and digital campaign to support the effort nationwide. Phase two, which is currently in planning, will launch in 2019. Discover more at www.az5c.com.

"Who Did Your Hair?" Scottsdale’s Hair Color Guru, Rod Gentry, is the go-to expert for coloring your tresses

Hair color is tricky. Ensuring the perfect shade, finishing the process with hair that is still healthy, creating the perfect look—there are not many who can do it all or who are known as the go-to expert in color. But now Scottsdale has a color guru. Rod Gentry, one of the industry’s color experts, has relocated from Chicago— where he spent 24 years working in the field—to Scottsdale.

HIS WEALTH OF KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERTISE WILL ALLOW THEM TO ACHIEVE THE LOOK THEY WANT; AND THAT THE COLOR WILL BE PERFECT, EVERY TIME. His clients know four main things about Rod: They’ll receive undivided, personalized attention at their appointment (no double booking!); he’ll use only the top and best products to ensure their hair stays healthy; his wealth of knowledge and expertise will allow them to achieve the look they want; and that the color will be perfect, every time. Rod approaches hair color differently than others, first working with a client to determine the look they want, and then taking into account the client’s complexion and lifestyle to make sure that the end result will be something that is both flattering and workable. One of his main focuses is always on the health of the hair, and so he uses only high-end, enzyme-based

developers (rather than peroxide-based ones) so that hair is left in a better condition, and extremely shiny. He also always finishes a color process with a conditioning treatment as part of the color service. “You can have long hair and great color, but if it’s damaged, it won’t look as good,” he explains. He relentlessly pursues education to stay at the top of his field, traveling worldwide to learn about the newest innovative techniques, products and knowledge, training in such places as London and New York. “I really think that education is the key to success,” he explains. Rod’s services include single process color, highlights, color gloss, color paneling, ombre, extended conditioning, color correction, color removal and more, as well as cuttingedge haircuts. “I guarantee my work. Period,” he says.

Full-service designer and hair color specialist Rodney Gentry can be reached at StainD in Sachi Studios, 10201 N Scottsdale Rd., Scottsdale, AZ 85253. Call 480.639.2000 to make an appointment or visit www.rodneygentry.com for further information.

ORGANIZATIONAL IQ

Abby Kahn specializes in creating efficient environments that enhance happiness

BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE

Besides helping her clients declutter and get organized, business owner and mom of two Abby Kahn helps people who are too busy, too confused or too stressed create relaxed, beautiful environments with her personal organization company, Abbsolutely Organized (www.abbsolutelyorganized.com). As a former teacher, Kahn loved to create inviting spaces for her students, which led to her passion for constructing functional surroundings – starting in her own home. “Setting up my classroom was always one of my favorite things to do,” she says. “My friends loved what I did for my daughter’s playroom and asked me to assist them in organizing their households. I enjoyed it so much that I turned it into my career.” The term “professional organizer” may trigger visions of reality shows about pack rats and hoarders, but Kahn often steps in before any disorganization or dysfunction occurs to create systems that work in everyday locations. Think expectant parents who want to create a nursery that’s safe and where everything is easily accessible, companies organizing new offices, or stores seeking maximum flow and efficiency. Since taking the steps to turn her hobby into her profession, Kahn’s services have evolved. “At first, I started organizing children’s rooms then moved on to organizing professional offices, pantries, kitchens, storage closets and entire homes.” With her background in education, family-focused projects are her favorite. “When organizing playrooms and study areas for children, I am able to cultivate spaces that are developmentally appropriate to the level of the child.” Equipped with her creative and detail-oriented sense of thinking, Kahn continues to help her clients create positive emotional connections with their space. “I love when clients tell me that they are happier at home because they are living in an organized environment. They have more time to be doing the things they love versus always looking for things they can’t find or opening up messy closets.” Kahn’s current focus includes helping people develop techniques to manage their newly organized spaces and finding charitable organizations that can benefit from items her clients no longer need.

WELLNESS FACTOR

Laurel Roach takes her healthy fitness message to businesses across Arizona

Laurel Roach started modeling in high school. Back then, she grappled with anorexia and bulimia. Her posthigh school years weren’t much healthier as she partied too much and didn’t know about proper nutrition or adopting a fitness routine. “I believe that young adults today feel much like I did – insecure with a terrible body image,” says Roach, who is married to former NHL and European hockey player, Andy Roach. “Now, they compare themselves to celebrities on social media, which just makes them feel even more inadequate.” She has since become devoted to the causes of fitness and fighting obesity. After ditching bad habits, Roach made her way into corporate America, though, after several years, she grew tired of 70-hour work weeks. With a focused mission of healthy living, she became the owner of TriFIT Wellness in 2017 and joined a program through Entrepreneurs’ Organization to help get her business earning over $1 million per year while investing in herself and business coaching. Eventually, Roach partnered with Stephan Poschik of Corporate Health Consulting, a company based in Austria. In licensing Poschik’s process, she now offers a valuable health service to Arizona companies by bringing a viable program to small and midsize businesses that includes a level of accountability. “Most corporate health programs come in, do a ‘rah-rah’ event, and talk about nutrition and fitness, but then nobody knows what to do after that,” Roach says. “In order to make lifestyle changes, people need oneon-one support and hand-holding.” Targeting companies with 50 to 500 employees, Roach offers four quarterly events at a workplace. “Fifty percent participation is typical for this kind of event,” she explains of the first “intake” event. “We track body fat, visceral fat, water weight, bone density, and metabolic age for each employee.” The three additional events that occur within a year cover select topics such as nutrition, which includes one-on-one employee sessions to discuss health goals. “I will give specific, manageable action items to work on during the upcoming 90 days and then we will retest those employees.” Most of all, accountability is key. “If people are healthy and happy and understand that work/life balance, it’s a win-win for everybody.”

That said, Showalter does follow some simple, consistent tactics when it comes to styling, all of which can easily translate from day to night. “I typically stick to a monochromatic color scheme of black, white and grays,” he says. “If I am feeling playful, I will incorporate pops of color into an outfit and usually color-coordinate an accessory with that hue.” As a brand ambassador and stylist at luxury consignment store My Sister’s Closet, Showalter is surrounded by high-end brands priced at a fraction of retail costs. “I love working in the fashion industry,” he says. “I see new things every day that inspire me, and I usually notice trends as they start, while sorting through them to find the ones I think will stay classic for a while.” So, what’s this fashion connoisseur loving right now? Trends like cuffed ankle and fitted pants, bold stripes and lightwashed denim.

What is your favorite store? I’m a Neimans guy for luxe pieces. I grew up in Dallas most of my life, which is where Neimans originated and has their flagship location. It was the start of a love affair. Who is your style icon? Alexander Wang is newer on the fashion scene, and he makes amazing contemporary pieces and designs that I’m inspired by. What do you splurge on? I love a good piece of tailored luxury clothing. I splurge on brands such as Gucci, Burberry and Louis Vuitton for their high quality and versatility.

Pulse HER STYLE

AN EYE FOR DETAIL Marcelle Tammen curates a unique, elegant style from lash to toe

BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY BEVERLY SHUMWAY LOCATION: BOULDERS RESORT & SPA

A thick fringe of long, black eyelashes is no longer dependent on genetics and Marcelle Tammen, the fashionable owner of Lashful AZ, is in the business of giving women the lashes they dream of – in style, of course. Besides being a passionate entrepreneur with an eye for detail, Tammen has an elegant, innovative style all her own. “In my daily life, I combine a plethora of brands in order to establish my own unique look,” Tammen says. Sporting a conservative top and the perfect pair of jeans on most days, Tammen is able to swap out a pair of heels and an elegant skirt after she leaves work. Naturally, her lashes are always picture-perfect, so after a quick hair and makeup touch-up, she can hit the town. When it comes to shopping, Tammen is a Nordstrom girl at heart and loves classic designers such as Louis Vuitton, noting that for generations, the fashion house has implemented an astounding level of quality with avant-garde design that she appreciates. Tammen also gravitates toward combining colors and patterns. “Whether combining two prints that repeat the same colors, mixing large- and small-scale patterns, or pairing loose- and tight-fitting pieces, I find a way to take control of my own style!”

What is your most prized possession? A vintage Chanel crystal necklace that my grandmother gave to me before she passed away. Not only is this necklace sentimental, but it is also incredibly beautiful and so unique! What is your must-have item? I believe that a simple nude lipstick and the right set of lashes instills every woman with the confidence to pull off any look. The woman makes the outfit; the outfit does not make the woman! What would someone say if they looked at your closet? “Did I just walk into Nordstrom?!”

It’s not every day a filmmaker can say they’ve made the jump into filmmaking from law enforcement. As writer, producer and director Kim Marie has done just that, bringing inspirational messages along the way as the founder and president of film production company, Mirror Dog Productions (www.mirrordogproductions.com). Marie hails from Michigan but after living in California for about 15 years, discovered Arizona and found her home in the Valley. “Last spring, I came out for the Phoenix Film Festival,” says the self-proclaimed serial entrepreneur. “I ended up coming here and haven’t left. It’s such a short hike to Los Angeles, and I don’t mind driving or hopping on a flight.” With her production company, Marie shoots films in locations around the U.S., including in Arizona, but being close to the film production hub in Los Angeles is convenient for her. The filmmaker is embracing life in Scottsdale and especially Arizona’s outdoor pursuits, including hiking Tom’s Thumb, kayaking down the Salt River, paddleboarding Lake Pleasant, and finding solace in Sedona. “Arizona is filled with such richness of history, scenery, spirituality and adventures,” Marie says. “It has brought such richness and added value to my journey.” As far as her journey into filmmaking, that could be the intriguing subject of its own movie. Marie started her career as a sheriff deputy and volunteer firefighter in Michigan. “I always wanted to serve my community and being from Michigan, I grew up with the Midwestern sensibility of ‘have a safe job.’ I had to kind of put away my dreams of going to Hollywood and being a filmmaker.” As a child, Marie was always behind the camera and dreamt of pursuing that as a career, but she didn’t think it was possible. Duty called and she started working as a junior explorer sheriff deputy at the age of 13 and taking criminal justice classes in high school, eventually attending community college in Michigan before moving on to UCLA where she studied scriptwriting. Marie’s “a-ha” moment came courtesy of her animals. In addition to her filmmaking aspirations, she was also an animal behaviorist, training and showing golden retrievers and training German shepherds and horses while she was working in law enforcement. “I was doing commercials for the automotive industry with the dogs, and one day a model didn’t show up,” she says. “They asked me to step in, and I happened to be the right size and what they were looking for. I thought, ‘this is fun,’ and I had always thought about acting. I got bit by the bug with that, and then I was on a journey to find my truth, passion and purpose.” She embarked on a spiritual journey and discovered that the entertainment industry served her life purpose. “I could be in hundreds of thousands of peoples’ homes at one time – making a difference, reaching them, touching hearts, and bringing education, hope and awareness into their lives,” says Marie, whose passion led her to found Mirror Dog Productions in 2010.

Connection and Collaboration As a full-service production company, Mirror Dog Productions’ mission is to captivate audiences with quality, compelling film artistry to engage conversation and inspire change. This is rooted in Marie’s vision to shape the world and assist people in finding their purpose, all through the art of film. Marie’s latest feature film, Urban Myths – which she wrote,

40

So Scottsdale! September ‘18

directed and produced – continues this message. As a psychological/paranormal thriller taking place on ancient Native American burial grounds, the film is a journey of self-discovery that weaves different spiritualties, stories and myths to offer a deeper message. “Everything I wrote about … all those myths do exist,” Marie says. “There really is an Indian burial ground near where we filmed called Witchy Wolves, and they say that wolf spirits protect it.” During the course of filming, Marie worked with Native Americans who live in Michigan. “They did a beautiful blessing and ceremony over me, and the elders came down. It was amazing.” Debuting last year, Urban Myths is currently on the film festival circuit, and, to date, the movie has been chosen for the Accolade Global Film Competition, Valley Film Festival, La Femme International

“We strive to help others make our world a better place. We believe that through the art we create, our collaborations, and our outreach we can accomplish our mission and touch lives.”

Film Festival, and Los Angeles Independent Film Festival, winning multiple awards along the way. One of the more prestigious awards bestowed upon Urban Myths was in the category of Feature Film Award as given by The American Film Award, an international film and screenwriting competition by filmmakers and for filmmakers. Urban Myths marked Marie’s directorial debut, and, by all accounts, the experience has proven that she has serious film chops. “I did everything on this film from start to finish – writing, producing, directing and editing. I had my hands on all of it,” Marie explains. “I don’t think you can learn in college what you can actually doing your own feature film. It is the best education anybody could get!” Mirror Dog Productions is involved in more than film, too. “We do cause-related marketing, advertising and collaborations with our films, TV series, web series, and different projects we have,” Marie says. Following suit, causes and a purpose come with all of Marie’s Mirror Dog projects. “We give a voice to the voiceless, help lift the fallen, restore the broken, and help the hurting,” she says. “We strive to help others make our world a better place. We believe that through the art we create, our collaborations, and our outreach we can accomplish our mission and touch lives.” In conjunction with that belief, Marie collaborates with different nonprofit organizations to help support them and share their respective messages. Marie has worked with organizations connected to causes for veterans, foster children, first responders and service animals. In fact, animals are a big part of her journey. Ever since she was in public service, Marie has had service dogs with her every step of the way, including being on set. Two of them even got the chance to grab some of the Hollywood shine. “They were in Urban Myths,” Marie says of her golden retriever, Miranda, and Tibetan terrier, Jahzara. She has had the dogs since they were pups and calls them her guardian angels. “I’ve worked with Leader Dogs for the Blind, and I’ve gone into nursing homes and children’s hospitals for over 20 years. I bring the dogs to lighten up their day and give service any way we can.” At the heart of her work is connection and collaboration, two things that propel Marie forward and also led her to where she is today. Marie counts Nancy Meyers and Jody Foster among her favorite women directors, and her personal mentors include industry veteran, writer, producer and UCLA professor, Chris Knopf, who worked on projects including Zane Grey Theater and Pope John Paul II. She particularly loved that she could draw on Knopf’s experiences from the golden era of Hollywood, which she now pours into Mirror Dog Productions. “I aspire to be a part of the movement to bring back the elegance, integrity, art and magic of Hollywood and the media from the classic era of the ’50s,” she says. As for what’s next, Mirror Dog Productions is moving fullsteam ahead with a few projects in post-production and a couple of series in the works, along with another feature film currently in pre-production. “I live my life purpose-driven, and that is the foundation I build everything on,” Marie says. “Success is measured by the lives you impact on a daily basis in a positive way. The positive change we bring and the level of outreach we have can bring hope, inspiration, education, and awareness to lives all around the world.”

Get to know the people who cook up everything but the food at local venues

Why do you love your favorite restaurant or bar? Is it the food? The drinks? The ambiance? Sure, while each of those elements certainly play a part, more often than not, you love a venue because of the way it makes you feel. And that’s why you go back and where general managers come into play. From the front of the house to the back of the house and everything in between, general managers are tasked with the day-to-day operations of every aspect of their team, venue decor, menus, and the overall guest experience. Truly, they are the behind-the-scenes talent that makes a place the place to be. Meet seven of them here.

Andrew McLaughlin GENERAL MANAGER, BOURBON STEAK AT FAIRMONT SCOTTSDALE PRINCESS

Andrew McLaughlin was born into a family business, but it was a far cry from the hospitality industry. As Arabian horse trainers, McLaughlin’s family moved to Arizona in the mid-1980s from Iowa given the Valley’s booming equine industry. For many of his early years, McLaughlin thought his future was with the animals. But at age 16, McLaughlin took a job at the Hyatt Regency Scottsdale’s former Golden Swan restaurant. Entranced by the intricacies of the job, McLaughlin jumped at every chance he had to take on more responsibility despite his young age. By 20, though he could not yet enjoy wine, McLaughlin became focused on earning his sommelier certification. Working under mentor and then-executive chef William Bradley, McLaughlin earned his level 1 certification as well as a dual role as general manager and sommelier when the Hyatt reimagined Golden Swan into VU. In 2008, McLaughlin joined the Michael Mina Group to open Bourbon Steak at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess, first as a server. Before taking on the general manager role, McLaughlin worked at Mina’s various concepts, notably RN74 in Seattle and Pabu at Four Seasons Hotel in Baltimore. By 2013, armed with a level 2 sommelier certification and the experience of someone twice his age, McLaughlin made his way back to Arizona as the general manager of Bourbon Steak. Over the past five years, McLaughlin has worked to evolve the concept of Scottsdale dining, becoming the first restaurant in the country with a single-barrel Bulleit bourbon program while adding tableside Japanese whiskey and absinthe ceremonies, respectively, and interactive tasting menus. Today, McLaughlin is working on his advanced sommelier certification while mentoring the next generation of talent on the team and supporting local causes like MASK and Arizona Liver Alliance. “I want to reinvest in my people and my community the way so many invested in me,” McLaughlin says.

Jason Goetz

GENERAL MANAGER, SOL MEXICAN COCINA Jason Goetz grew up in Iowa with aspirations of being a pilot, athlete, comedian and even a chef. But, given his family business was in construction supply, he assumed his life would follow a “bluer collar” trajectory. Once he graduated from The University of Iowa, however, he had a long conversation with his grandfather, who encouraged him to chase his dreams. Inspired, Goetz set out for the Arizona Golf Academy in 2007 at age 26. He worked part time for P.F. Chang’s before the move, so it was an easy transition to the Valley, where he took on serving, bartending and eventual managerial duties at the Scottsdale-based chain. Before he knew it, 10 years had passed since he started with the brand, and while professional golf wasn’t in the cards, restaurant management was. In 2012, Goetz was offered an opportunity to serve as the general manager for another up-and-coming restaurant concept, Sol Mexican Cocina. Since taking the reins, he has not only led the team in Scottsdale, but at Sol locations in both California and Colorado. Because of this, Goetz also operates in a regional role, serving all locations in Arizona, California and Colorado. He has assisted in hiring the entire culinary teams as well as helped develop Sol’s signature muddled cocktails, each focused on giving guests a full sensory experience. In recent years, Goetz even traveled to Mexico to aid in curating tequilas and mezcals for Sol’s four locations, and recently spent several months helping re-energize the Colorado restaurant, going so far as to move there temporarily to ensure success. “Life has been good to me. I do not credit my success to luck, as success is really preparation meeting opportunity,” Goetz says. “I’m a firm believer in setting goals for yourself and working hard toward them while helping others along the way.” In his spare time, Goetz raises funds for and volunteers at Phoenix Children’s Hospital and Blank Check Children’s Hospital in Iowa. He also oversees Sol’s charitable giving arm, which has benefited the Boys & Girls Clubs and The Challenge Foundation.

Mary Anna Ford

GENERAL MANAGER, SAPPORO On first blush, MaryAnna Ford looks the epitome of femininity. But that’s quite contrary. In fact, Ford – who was raised in Texas with three older brothers – wanted to be a stunt woman and race cars when she grew up. Known for jumping off roofs and never without her skateboard, she spent her early life breaking more bones than all her older brothers combined. But after one too many concussions, she turned her attention to another passion: music. Ford’s voice earned her a scholarship to study music at a small college in Texas, where she married her high school sweetheart. But, in the early 1990s when her marriage fell apart and Ford was left with one young daughter and another on the way, the now-single mother moved to Arizona to be close to family. Initially, she managed apartment communities, but given that she had worked off and on in restaurants during high school and college, by the early 2000s, she started working at then-hot spot Jilly’s as well as in real estate. In 2004, she was working as a realtor, but was also recruited by Sapporo for what she assumed would be a side gig. Then the real estate market crashed. Ford persevered, pouring herself into Sapporo and joining its management team by 2007. In 2009, when Sapporo was purchased by worldwide restaurant juggernaut Tavistock, they not only kept Ford on but also invested in her culinary education, inviting her to dozens of their concepts nationwide, where she learned the art of the hospitality sector. “Pablo Picasso said ‘learn the rules like a pro so you can break them like an artist,’” Ford says. “I voraciously observed, listened and learned so that I could master my craft and then paint my own picture, forge my own way in the industry.” Overseeing all business and culinary operations at Sapporo, Ford still visits sister concepts but, now, she helps others through her experience and knowledge. She also oversees local charitable giving, including a partnership with the Arizona Cardinals to host events for women touched by abuse and cancer.

Patrick Norton

GENERAL MANAGER, J&G STEAKHOUSE AT THE PHOENICIAN When John Lennon was in school, a teacher asked him what he wanted to be when he grew up. When he wrote “happy” as his answer, the teacher told him he didn’t understand the assignment to which Lennon famously responded that she didn’t understand life. Much like Lennon, Patrick Norton simply seeks happiness out of life. A New England native, Norton guided his every decision by what would make him happy. This ideal led him to study French and history in college, where he bussed tables on the side. Eventually, Norton’s foray into the culinary world took him to France, where he gained experience in global cuisine. During a chance meeting on a subway while there, Norton met his nowwife, a Frenchwoman who he brought back to America in the 1990s. Back in the states, his global hospitality experience brought him extraordinary opportunities over the next 15-plus years, including working with famed chef David Burke, a teaching position at the French Culinary Institute in New York City, and general manager positions with The Palm Restaurant and world-renowned Smith & Wollensky steakhouses nationwide. But the desert is what made him happy. So much so, in 2011 the Nortons relocated to Scottsdale, where Norton joined the then-new J&G Steakhouse at The Phoenician as part of Michelin-starred chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s leadership team. Norton and J&G quickly earned acclaim from Wine Spectator and USA Today. In 2015, when The Phoenician purchased J&G from Jean-Georges Restaurants, Norton stayed on, leading the restaurant while the resort underwent a multi-million-dollar, multi-year renovation. Today, Norton is still at the helm while J&G undergoes some minor upgrades into the fall. “I live for five o’clock, when the metaphoric curtain goes up and our team is live, performing nightly to guests’ cheers and applause,” Norton says. “In fact, nothing makes me happier.”

Nick Accardo

GENERAL MANAGER OF BAR AND NIGHTLIFE OPERATIONS, TRIYAR ENTERTAINMENT GROUP Nick Accardo grew up in Ahwatukee, quickly earning his EMT certification once he graduated high school with eyes on becoming a firefighter or getting into strength and conditioning training for elite athletes. Eager to earn income while in school for both, Accardo accepted a fine dining server position at the now-closed restaurant, Barcelona, in the early 2000s. A natural talent, Accardo was eventually scooped up by Myst Nightclub, where he could work at night, while studying and interning at a local mixed martial arts gym by day. At one point, his popularity even led to a guest bartending gig at Myst’s popular neighbor, Martini Ranch, on Sundays. In 2006, Accardo was recruited to Jackrabbit Lounge, known for its celebrity clientele, where he became a VIP bottle runner, all while still in school. By 2008, Accardo was asked to join Triyar Entertainment Group to open W Scottsdale and its three in-house bars/lounges. The W quickly felt like home, especially when he met a fellow bartender-turned-girlfriend, Dawn. Eventually, Accardo put school on hold to focus on hospitality full time. In 2015, Dawn and Accardo – both in management positions at the hotel by then – received exciting news that they were pregnant. They married in 2016, and Dawn, who had taken over the role of general manager, decided to take some time off to be with the baby, so, in a twist of fate, Accardo stepped into her role. “Be it science, mixology, parenting or management, the more you know, the more there is to know each day,” says Accardo, who, today, heads all of the resort’s major events including their famous Halloween and New Year’s Eve extravaganzas as well as day-to-day operations of W Scottsdale’s Shade Lounge, WET Dayclub and Living Room Lounge as well as bar operations at Aloft Scottsdale nearby. Accardo also helps spearhead the nonprofit efforts at the hotel, which, along with Triyar overall, supports dozens of charities.

Nick Campisano

GENERAL MANAGER, BORN & RAISED HOSPITALITY Tucson native Nick Campisano’s father raised him to believe in sweat equity. Though the elder Campisano is credited with helping co-found and design Canyon Ranch resort and spa, for example, it didn’t mean the younger Campisano got special treatment when he applied to work there in high school, starting as a busboy and dish washer. The hard work he put in at his “dad’s office” inspired Campisano to venture to Southern California in his early 20s to seek out more work and new industry experiences. At the time, traditional dive bars along the Pacific coast were ripe for an upgrade so Campisano started (and eventually became a partner in) a business that restored and refreshed them along the coast from Los Angeles to San Jose. Campisano would work as manager of each one as needed, but eventually took a break to study business and law. While there in 2006, Morgan Hotel Group scooped him up to help breathe new life into the Mondrian Scottsdale, which brought Campisano back to Arizona. From there, he would join Fox Restaurant Concepts (FRC), helping open Modern Steak and the first Culinary Dropout. In 2012, when his niece was born with special needs, Campisano stepped back from management to focus on family, leaving FRC and taking a job at The Parlor. There, he met then-beverage director Joshua James. By 2014, the two, who shared a passion for Asian cuisine and culture, dreamt up Clever Koi in Central Phoenix. Its success led to a second location in Gilbert in 2016 and the beginning of Born & Raised Hospitality, the group that manages these restaurants. “Food, beverage and hospitality is a vessel to create a memorable experience for the guest, but, more importantly, it serves to inspire the team at the restaurant,” says Campisano, who still serves as general manager of Clever Koi. Today, Campisano and James have two more venues in the works: Fellow Osteria at ASU SkySong and Across the Pond, literally across from Clever Koi Phoenix.

Matthew Wohleb

GENERAL MANAGER, NOOK KITCHEN ARCADIA AND DILLY DALLY LOUNGE A Scottsdale native, Matthew Wohleb was fascinated with drawing and – by middle school – graphic design. After high school, Wohleb studied marketing, intent on working in advertising, where he could dabble in graphics and help tell visual stories for brands “just like Matthew McConaughey in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.” Though he would graduate in his early 20s with that marketing degree, by the time graduation rolled around, Wohleb had found a new vocational passion: wine. During college and immediately after in the mid-2000s, Wohleb worked for the company that formerly owned Cowboy Ciao, Kazimierz World Wine Bar, See Saw and Digestif. There, he became entranced by wine. Ironically, Wohleb’s mother lived in Sonoma, and though he visited her every summer while growing up, the wine bug didn’t bite until all those years later. A level 1 sommelier by age 21 and advanced sommelier soon after, Wohleb stayed with the restaurant group and became the “the wine guy,” known for carrying a walkie-talkie so any of the four venues could radio in for wine suggestions and for his nightly jogs on Stetson Drive between venues to offer personalized guest guidance. In 2010, former colleague Frank Vairo recruited Wohleb as beverage manager of his new Cave Creek restaurant, Amaro, where he worked for three years before partnering with Vairo to open Nook Kitchen Arcadia in 2013. Nine months later, they would buy Dilly Dally Lounge. “There is a voice in my head always whispering, ‘Do better. Strive,’ Wohleb says. “Launching my own concepts, and then caring for their operations, makes me push harder every day.” In addition to serving as a partner and general manager of Nook Kitchen Arcadia and Dilly Dally Lounge, Wohleb is also a partner at Nook Kitchen’s Downtown Phoenix location and The Bar in Arcadia. Additionally, he is an avid supporter of Southwest Autism Research & Resource Center as well as the Epilepsy Foundation.

The Beauty Within

Dr. Sumer Daiza, MD FADS, of Plastic Surgery of Scottsdale

PLASTIC SURGERY IS a highly personal decision for every individual and Dr. Sumer Daiza makes that medical journey right along with her patients. By offering the safest and highest level of focused care, she welcomes each patient into a warm and compassionate environment where they are treated like family. Dr. Daiza has lived in Scottsdale since she was a baby. From the age of three, she knew she wanted to be a physician because of the respect she had for her own childhood doctor. She attended Xavier College Preparatory and Arizona State University before earning her medical degree from the University of Arizona College of Medicine. She was also elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society, a distinction awarded to only the top 10 percent of the medical school graduating class. She completed a 5-year general surgery residency program at the Phoenix Integrated Surgical Residency and her plastic surgery training at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. “It wasn’t until my general surgery training that I was exposed to the plastic surgery specialty and I knew immediately that this was what I wanted to do,” Dr. Daiza says. After her plastic surgery training, Dr. Daiza went on to complete a one-year cosmetic surgery fellowship with Charlotte Plastic Surgery where she trained alongside some of the leading plastic surgeons in the country. Her training focused on cosmetic surgery of the breast, body and face, which are now her specialty. Now in her own practice, Dr. Daiza offers highly personalized cosmetic procedures including facelifts, breast augmentations, lifts and reductions, liposuction, tummy tucks, body contouring, mommy makeovers, Botox and fillers. “I do all the injectables myself and I do not use ancillary staff to do them,” she says. Mommy makeovers are a very popular procedure, including the Genevieve by Viveve vaginal rejuvenation. “It fits in well with my patient population and benefits moms who have had babies and those that have urinary incontinence,” Dr. Daiza says. She adds, “My office is like a concierge practice. I see every

patient from the very beginning until the very end.” An initial consultation takes about an hour where she will discuss a patient’s desired outcome, helps them select the procedure that is right for them, an exam is completed, and patients look at before and after photos of what they can expect. “We are very much a no-pressure office,” she explains. Dr. Daiza personally sees each patient for every appointment, including all pre-op and post-up visits. Even beyond the surgical procedure, she stays in contact with her patients. “What I do is very personal as it is, and patients are coming in to feel better about themselves, so it becomes a personal relationship.” Her patients stay with her throughout the years and often refer family members and friends. Remarkably, every patient gets Dr. Daiza’s personal cell number so that they have the peace of mind knowing their doctor is only a phone call away. Whether getting medical, surgical or cosmetic dermatological care, Dr. Anne Walter utilizes state-of-the-art techniques to develop customized treatments plan for each patient. Hailing from California, Dr. Walter attended Harvard, completing her bachelor’s degree and graduating cum laude before earning her Doctor of Medicine at University of Southern California. “I had originally thought I wanted to be a plastic surgeon until I entered medical school. However, most procedures in plastic surgery require patients to be placed under general anesthesia, which limits physician-patient interaction,” Dr. Walter explains. “In medical school, I gained more exposure to dermatology and fell in love with it. I really enjoy interacting and developing relationships with my patients. Furthermore, I liked that there was a medical component, working with both cancer and chronic medical conditions, as well as a cosmetic side. It was the perfect combination.” She completed an internal medicine internship at UCLA’s Cedars-Sinai Medical Center before completing her dermatology residency at Chicago’s Northwestern University, serving as chief resident during her final year. She then completed a yearlong Mohs Surgery and Cutaneous Oncology fellowship. “My training brought me to the East Coast, West Coast and Midwest! It’s nice because I feel like I have something in common with almost every patient,” Dr. Walter explains. Dr. Walter and her husband opened Dermatology & Skin Surgery Specialists in Scottsdale in 2015. In contrast to the corporatization of dermatology, Dr. Walter prides herself on providing patient centered care in an intimate practice environment. Dr. Walter’s expertise in the field is exceptional. She is a fellow of the American College of Mohs Surgery and American Academy of Dermatology. Dr. Walter recognizes that practicing dermatology in Arizona comes with unique challenges. “We have intense sun exposure which can lead to skin cancer and premature aging. We can’t assume that sunscreen alone is enough. When possible, I recommend physically protecting the skin with hats, swim shirts and sun protective clothing, in addition to sunscreen. People should also be proactive and optimize their skin care regimens. The skin benefits from hydration, antioxidants, retinoids, and growth factors.”

The doctor suggests that people in their early 20s have their skin checked to get a baseline evaluation of moles and overall skin health to determine skin cancer risk. Those in their 30s and 40s and beyond should be evaluated more frequently. Obviously, any concerning lesions should be brought to the attention of a dermatologist no matter the patient’s age. Dr. Walter also recommends being proactive about antiaging. Small treatments in your early years can help maintain a natural youthful look during your golden years. “Scottsdale’s cosmetic market is booming,” Dr. Walter explains. “Unfortunately, amid the many qualified providers, there are many unsupervised injectors that do not understand the risks of the procedures. I prefer restricting these services to physicians.” Dermatology & Skin Surgery Specialists excels at providing exceptional dermatology expertise in a properly supervised practice. Changing Looks, Changing Lives

Sean Lille, MD, PC, of Sean Lille Board Certified Plastic Surgeon

THE CHANGES MAY be most visible on the outside, but to Dr. Sean Lille, plastic surgery is anything but superficial. In fact, the fusion between the physical and the spiritual is something that Dr. Lille takes quite seriously. In the doctor’s eyes, his task isn’t simply a matter of fixing an issue on the surface; it’s restoring fulfillment on the inside. It’s helping to mend broken connections within, creating a ripple effect that touches every aspect of the patient’s life – from their self-perception to their personal relationships to their confidence at work. “If I can improve the vessel which carries the soul,” says Dr. Lille, “my patients gain a greater degree of wholeness.” It’s an obligation and a duty that Dr. Lille holds in high regard. Behind every procedure is a person with his or her own story. There are no cookie-cutter methods; everything is highly individualized, based on the patient’s medical issues, needs, and desires, and even the same procedures vary widely depending on these factors. Dr. Lille prides himself on taking the time to hear and understand each patient and what he or she requires, both inside and out. He makes certain to gain a level of absolute clarity before anything is ever done – and to be honest and candid throughout every step of the process. “My first responsibility is as a physician to these patients,” he says. “If they have medical issues precluding an elective procedure or don’t have realistic expectations, I’ll tell them.” This refreshing honesty and high degree of personal integrity are only a small part of the reason patients come from all over to seek his expertise. Dr. Lille holds himself to the highest imaginable standards; although perfection is a lofty goal, he thrives on the challenge and intensity that each patient brings,

excelling at procedures which require a high degree of detail and precision. A former Attending Plastic Surgeon at the Mayo Clinic Scottsdale, with over seventy published articles in prestigious medical and scientific journals, and more than two dozen appearances on national and local TV news segments highlighting his cutting-edge techniques and success with the most complex cases, he has established a well-earned reputation for knowledge and proficiency in his field. Nationally recognized, his practice has earned “Top Doc” and multiple consumer awards, and it’s no wonder – Dr. Lille is widely regarded as an expert craftsman, combining artistry and science in a way that exquisitely compliments each unique “canvas” he touches. Stem Cell Treatment for Diabetic Neuropathy Dr. Richard Jacoby, DPM of Extremity Health Center

THE DOCTORS AND staff at Extremity Health Centers offer a combined 40+ years of experience in podiatric medicine to residents who live in and around the Phoenix and Scottsdale area. Under the medical direction of podiatrist Richard P. Jacoby, DPM, the practice provides diagnosis and treatment for stubborn, chronic foot and ankle pain and comprehensive and successful treatment of diabetic neuropathy. After graduating from college, Dr. Jacoby attended Villanova University before receiving his doctorate of podiatric medicine at the Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine. He has participated in and taught thousands of hours of Continuing Medical Education over the past few decades. Additionally, he is a past president of the Arizona Podiatry Association and the Association of Extremity Nerve Surgeons and co-authored the book “Sugar Crush: How to Reduce Inflammation, Reverse Nerve Damage, and Reclaim Good Health,” correlating a relationship between sugar and inflammation. Extremity Health Center offers a variety of on-site extremity diagnosis and medical services, including surgery that are available for a wide range of issues, including foot and heel pain, bunions, ankle fractures and sprains, varicose veins, foot and ankle arthritis, diabetic foot, plantar fasciitis, toenail fungus and peripheral neuropathy and neuroma. Dr. Jacoby’s specialty is working with diabetic patients and he has a proven formula to resolve diabetic neuropathy. “What I’ve found is that the progression of most neuropathies is aggressive, insidious and invasive throughout the body.” “Stem cells from umbilical cord blood are the best product out there today, especially for neuropathy,” says Dr. Jacoby of the most effect treatment he uses. “ Stem cells are miraculous in that they actively seek out inflammatory tissues and repair and restore tissue, tendon, tissue, bone, nerve or muscle. Stem cells also work in the repair of foot and ankle fractures and Achilles tendonitis. “Stem cells are the biggest paradigm shift in medicine since the germ theory and it’s absolutely true,” Dr. Jacoby explains of stem cell use in diabetic neuropathy. “Patients will get off their medicine, and in most cases will avoid surgery.” Dr. Jacoby uses the Dellon procedure for decompressing

peripheral neuropathy. He has utilized the surgical procedure successfully on thousands of patients and none of them have needed a subsequent amputation. He says, “Dr. Dellon perfected the Dellon technique and did the research back in the 80s. I adopted his technique and trained with him 20 years ago.” There have been 100,000 amputations annually due to diabetic neuropathy since the implementation of the Dellon procedure and Dr. Jacoby says that adds up to two million avoidable amputations. “It’s a national disgrace,” he says. It is his belief that the FDA pushes medications that don’t work, which in turn, create situations where amputations are done. The Dellon procedure utilizing stem cells could save thousands of people from avoidable amputations. “Stem cells are the fountain of youth and I’ve used them myself for a severe herniated disc,” finishes Dr. Jacoby. “I was back playing tennis in three days and haven’t needed another injection since.” TO LEARN MORE ABOUT EXTREMITY HEALTH CENTER, CALL 480.994.5977 IN SCOTTSDALE OR PEORIA, OR VISIT WWW.EXTREMITYHEALTHCENTERS.COM.

Perfecting Smiles, Enriching Lives Dr. James Oh, DDS, MICOI, of Advanced Dentistry and Implant Center of Scottsdale

ADVANCED DENTISTRY AND Implant Center of Scottsdale is committed to providing a lifetime of optimum oral health care to its patients, and strives to foster patient relationships based on mutual trust. In his practice, Dr. James Oh recognizes the individual needs of people and strives to serve them in a caring environment. As a second-generation dentist, Dr. Oh had an interest in dentistry early on when he worked for his father during the summers as a teenager. “When I was 16 years-old and working in my dad’s office as an assistant, I saw that there are people who are very apprehensive about visiting the dentist. I remember the noisy drill, the dreadful elevator music, and the smells unique to dental offices, and I had compassion for them. It was important to me that I put them at ease,” says Dr. Oh. Dr. Oh graduated from Loma Linda University, School of Dentistry in 1997 and began his career in Monterey/Carmel California, where he lived with his wife and 2 daughters for 20 years. Although he continues to practice family dentistry, he became interested in oral implantology and did a fellowship at the California Implant Institute in San Diego, then completed a mastership with the International Congress of Oral Implantologists. In 2017, he and his family moved to North Scottsdale where they traded the ocean and fog for year-round sunshine. The practice reflects a relaxing environment. The oceanforest theme is calming and the sound of the drill is muted during treatment when patients watch their movie of choice with noise-canceling headsets. Dr. Oh says that not only is new technology creative and more precise, but it almost eliminates the old reasons that gave people anxiety about visiting the dentist. He talks excitedly about the CEREC CAD/CAM (3-D design and machinery) and CBCT (3-D X-ray imaging). “We have the ability to plan

surgeries on the scan and prevent harming certain vital structures,” he explains. “We are able to achieve greater accuracy that is predictable, which lowers the risk for complex procedures.” Crowns are made in house, implants are done on site, and the in-office lab provides the patients with the convenience of same-day results. “I like to know where I’m going before we start,” says Dr. Oh. “Restoring teeth is like remodeling a house. Ideally, we have an architect, an engineer, a designer. The planning should be done before the building process begins.” “My job is to listen and come up with the best plan to fulfill the needs and wants of each person using the least invasive procedures,” finishes Dr. Oh. “I want every patient to love their beautiful smile.” TO LEARN MORE ABOUT ADVANCED DENTISTRY AND IMPLANT CENTER OF SCOTTSDALE, CALL 480.725.9188 OR VISIT WWW.ADVANCEDDENTISTRYSCOTTSDALE.COM

Feel Better. Function Better. Look Better. Dr. Russell Bartels, Women’s Health & Vitality Hormones for Men Expert

DR. RUSSELL BARTELS is a board-certified gynecologist, but that does not define him. Over 16 years in practice he has responded to his patients needs and requests. For example, his revitalized female hormone patients asked him to treat the men in their lives, so he started a men’s health clinic to get men optimized too. Ten years ago, women began inquiring about vaginal rejuvenation, so Dr. Bartels went to Beverly Hills, received additional expertise on performing labiaplasty and vaginal tightening becoming the first to offer these services in Scottsdale. Subsequently, he added a wellness and weight loss program. He recognizes that no two patients are alike and the most effective solution is achieved through a personalized expert approach utilizing multiple modalities. After phasing out of delivering babies a few years ago, he still offers routine office gynecological services with a focus on non-surgical treatments for bladder leaking and vaginal looseness, health and wellness through hormone/thyroid optimization, sexual health and weight loss. Dr. Bartels offers many options for bioidentical hormones including creams, pills, injections, patches, and the sought-after pellets. He has been providing pellet therapy for over 10 years and suggests patients interested in this form of hormone optimization see an experienced provider as there are many pellet clinics popping up with little experience. For the men, he offers similar hormone/thyroid optimization and weight loss options, but also has several treatments for erectile dysfunction including the P Shot (PRP), Tri Mix injections, and the newest regenerative treatment called Gainswave. As the foremost authority on vaginal and bladder rejuvenation in Scottsdale, Dr. Bartels prides himself on the fact that his office is the only one in Arizona that has all the technological options for women seeking non-surgical vaginal and bladder rejuvenation- Viveve (Radiofrequency), Femilift (CO2 laser), and the O Shot (PRP). He points out that many other offices and Medspas only have one of these treatment options, and therefore that’s the treatment the patient will receive even if it’s not the best option, as each device targets slightly different issues. “If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. We have the full tool box to address our patients’ problems.” “It’s great that I can see couples and get them on the same page hormonally and functionally,” Dr. Bartels says. “We do weight

loss programs, too. It’s really about health optimization.” He is a leading expert in bioidentical hormone replacement therapy and has provided countless patients a renewed sense of self and better quality of life through his individualized approach. He is also a much sought-after speaker on the subject of bioidentical hormones and non-surgical vaginal/bladder rejuvenation. Additionally, the practice offers routine gynecological services, making it a comprehensive one-stop practice for all gynecological needs. On the aesthetics side, the practice offers Cool Sculpting, laser treatments, Botox, dermal fillers, PRP hair restoration and non-surgical facial rejuvenation. “I’m passionate about listening to a patient’s concerns and evaluating what they’ve been suffering with that no one else seems to be able to fix,” says Dr. Bartels. “Diagnosing problems when others can’t and offering solutions where others haven’t in order to help patients live better lives is why I became a doctor in the first place.” TO LEARN MORE ABOUT DR. Comprehensive Addiction Recovery Options Dr. Sarah Wicklund, MD FAPA of Fountain Hills Recovery BOARD-CERTIFIED PSYCHIATRIST and medical director of Fountain Hills Recovery, Dr. Sarah Wicklund provides comprehensive inpatient treatment. She also has a specialty of treating PTSD in veterans and first responders, treatment-resistant depression and patients with a dual diagnosis. Fountain Hills Recovery specializes in providing caring service for niche patient populations including executives, veterans, first responders, LGBT, youth, celebrities, artists, musicians and those with high stress careers. Dr. Wicklund received her B.S. in microbiology and her M.S. in Food Chemistry from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. She went on to the University of Illinois College of Medicine for medical school where she graduated in 2008. In 2012, she completed residency training in psychiatry at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, WI. During her time at MCW, she served as Chief Resident for the Milwaukee VA and gained an affinity for treating veterans. “I have several family members who are veterans and so is my husband,” Dr. Wicklund explains. “My rotation at the VA was not my only psychiatry rotation, but an elective rotation I chose to do during my fourth year that solidified my interest in psychiatry. I love to give back and it’s a way I felt I could give back to my country, too.” She relocated to Scottsdale after her residency in 2012 and joined the medical staff at St. Joseph’s Hospital in the inpatient setting at Valley Hospital. In 2013, she joined the Phoenix VA where she is still on staff, working with patients in inpatient and outpatient settings. Dr. Wicklund was excited to take on the position of medical director for Fountain Hills Recovery in June 2018 because of the focus on treating veterans and first responders. Because she is still working four days a week at the VA, her position at Fountain Hills Recovery allows for better continuity of care for patients suffering from substance abuse. There are two separate residential homes – one for men and one for women. She can follow her patients’ treatment from the

more intense residential substance abuse setting to the outpatient setting of her own private outpatient practice, Mindfully Integrated Health, and vice versa. She is proud to work with patients in a peaceful and respectful environment that offers a comprehensive approach to recovery. “I really like that Fountain Hills Recovery is doing recovery for the right reasons,” Dr. Wicklund says. “They are looking to help people. Substance abuse is so rampant in this country, particularly with opiate addiction. The owners, Natalie and John Salem really seem like they’re doing this to help others, especially first responders and veterans and that’s my soft spot.” There are a wide variety of patients at Fountain Hills recovery. “There are some veterans and first responders,” says Dr. Wicklund. “But, that’s not everyone, and it’s nice to see an array of people that come from across the country.” She is excited about the new component of working with patients from other areas of the country, as since her relocation to Arizona, she had exclusively been treating people from Arizona. Dr. Wicklund explains, “This is not the typical recovery program. There is staff here that are also in recovery. They understand from personal experience. They are very good at picking up when someone is leaving something out or just listening to get to the underlying issues of alcoholism or drug use.” “I’m really comfortable with dual diagnosis,” she says. “Having worked at the VA, there is a significant amount of dual diagnosis, whether that’s alcohol abuse, opiates or meth and mental illness. I’ve seen a lot of it and treated a lot of it.” Dr. Wicklund’s passion continues to be witnessing her patients’ success. “I love to see folks get better. I love to hear them say they’re feeling better and that they’re able to work with the program and be optimistic that it will work for them,” she finishes. Most major health insurance plans accepted and discounted selfpay rates available for those without insurance. On a Mission to Eliminate Heel Pain

Dr. Kamran D. Farahani, DPM, MPH of Foot & Ankle Institute of Arizona, LLC

DR. FARAHANI IS a leading physician in treating patients with various foot and ankle ailments. He has experience healing a broad range of patient demographics. He believes in working closely with each patient in order for them to understand their health and treatment during every phase of care. He attended medical school at The New York College of Podiatric Medicine. After graduation, he completed his surgical residency in podiatric medicine and surgery with reconstructive rear-foot and ankle at Hofstra School of Medicine-LIJ-Forest Hills Hospital and moved to Arizona shortly thereafter. Founded in 2013, Foot & Ankle Institute of Arizona offers a complete range of treatment for foot and ankle conditions, ranging from diabetic limb salvage to bunion surgery, wound care, treatment of diabetic foot ulcers, in addition to sports medicine. Dr. Farahani’s facility is fully equipped with state-of-the-art technology including laser therapy, digital x-rays, and extracorporeal shockwave therapy. One of the most common patient complaints is heel pain and it is Dr. Farahani’s mission to deliver expert treatment in this particular area. “Heel pain is the number one reason that a patient will seek treatment from a foot and ankle specialist,” he explains. “Conservative care alternatives and its successes are well utilized and also well-validated in literature.” Heel pain treatments are either approached in a conservative manner or treated through other means such as surgery or Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT). “ESWT was introduced on the medical landscape for conditions like plantar fasciitis. It has been used in Europe with much success a decade before it was used in the U.S.,” Dr. Farahani explains. Remarkably, the success rate for ESWT in treating heel pain is between 85-88 percent compared to those who had undergone surgical intervention, providing the ability to treat patients without resorting to ongoing injections, orthotics, shoe gear modification, prescription anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy, immobilization with a walking boot and/or cast, night

splint or as a last resort, surgical intervention. Dr. Farahani recently opened the Heel Pain Centers of Arizona within his north Phoenix practice, offering a place for patients to receive focused ESWT therapy. The therapy has almost zero down time, saving a patient 5-7 weeks in recovery time, in addition to saving the expense of a surgical center or hospital fees. “There is a strong cost benefit in dollars and no loss in work time,” Dr. Farahani says. “ESWT gives patients an extra modality for dealing with plantar fasciitis.” “I am very passionate about providing quality care to each of my patients. I’m a strong believer that knowledge is power, therefore, I spend a lot of time with my patients at each visit. The more they know, the more they are in control of their own health. There is nothing more important to me than earning the trust of a patient.” TO LEARN MORE ABOUT FOOT & ANKLE INSTITUTE OF ARIZONA, CALL 480.788.2524 OR VISIT WWW.FOOTANKLEINSTITUTEAZ.COM.

The Art of Plastic Surgery Dr. Andrew Wolin, MD, of Wolin Plastic Surgery Center

DR. ANDREW WOLIN is a double board-certified plastic surgeon that has treated patients from across Arizona, North America and the world. His expertise and extensive experience routinely garner him honors as a top plastic surgeon in Arizona. Dr. Wolin was drawn to plastic surgery because it combined two of his loves – biology and art. He graduated medical school from State University of New York and was a member of the prestigious AOA Medical Honor Society. He completed comprehensive residencies at Jewish Hospital and Washington University in St. Louis, MO and Arizona Children’s Hospital in Tempe, AZ. He has been practicing plastic and reconstructive surgery in Scottsdale since 1985 and is the medical director of the Wolin Plastic Surgery Center of Scottsdale. “Plastic surgery allows me to practice medicine and use my artistic abilities to create,” Dr. Wolin explains. What differentiates his practice from others is Dr. Wolin’s more than three decades of experience. “What I have evolved is a very personal approach to taking care of people. My practice is more of a boutique family style practice,” he says. Utilizing state-of-the-art techniques and equipment, Dr. Wolin performs a comprehensive variety of cosmetic procedures for the face, breast and body including facelifts, peels, laser skin resurfacing, liposuction, rhinoplasty, endoscopic facial surgery, breast surgeries, body lifts with torso and abdominal contouring and the latest techniques in facial and body liposuction. “Doing this as long as I have, all of these procedures are the ‘paints’ in my artist palette,” he says. Dr. Wolin is also an expert at autologous fat transfer and soft tissue fillers. Since 1994, he has been doing procedures utilizing patient’s own fat with outstanding success. “It’s been a fantastic tool for me, whether it’s facial, breast or body sculpting,” he explains. Instead of getting rid of a patient’s fat from liposuction, it is then used to add to areas of the body that need additional

curves and contouring, whether it’s the face, breast or body. “It is a form of art and I’ve been doing it longer than anybody,” adds Dr. Wolin. “You have to have artistic ability to do this and that is a lot of what plastic surgery is.” Dr. Wolin has presented his results multiple times at the prestigious International Federation of Adipose Therapeutics and Science as well as in other European and US professional meetings. He is also seen on Channel 15’s “Sonoran Living” as well as Channel 3’s “Your Life from A-Z” educating the Valley on the benefits of plastic surgery. Dr. Wolin’s passion isn’t necessarily performing a certain procedure, it is in making his patients thrilled with the results and the way they look and feel. “It’s about delivering an artistic service that makes my patients happy and feel better about themselves,” he says. Leading Edge Cosmetic Dentistry

Dr. Jeffrey D. Clark, DDS FAGD of Scottsdale Dental Excellence AT SCOTTSDALE DENTAL EXCELLENCE, Dr. Jeffrey D. Clark and his staff provide comfortable, individualized and comprehensive quality dental care in a relaxing spa-like environment. Offering restorative and focused cosmetic dentistry, implants, Invisalign and same day CEREC restorations, patients have the widest variety of dental services available in a state-of-the-art practice. Originally from California, Dr. Clark is a second-generation dentist who grew up assisting in his father’s dental practice. He dual majored in business finance and pre-med in college and graduated from Loma Linda University School of Dentistry. He initially thought he would be interested in performing root canals like his father, but he came to love cosmetic dentistry. He moved to Arizona in 1997 and opened his practice in Scottsdale. Some of Dr. Clark’s general cosmetic dental practice incorporates services including complete smile makeovers, teeth whitening using GLO, same day crowns, Invisalign, dental implants and comprehensive strategies to treat sleep apnea. “Nearly everything we do has a cosmetic aesthetic component,” Dr. Clark explains. “It is my goal to enhance and improve a smile.” Dr. Clark’s approach is comprehensive. Patients are initially screened for soft tissue issues like periodontal disease, oral cancer and a break down on tooth decay. Bite and occlusion are also evaluated. “Instead of looking at one or two teeth, we evaluate a patient’s overall health and medical history,” he says. Sleep apnea is one vitally important area that Dr. Clark treats. “Utilizing Cone Beam 3-D X-ray technology that gives a 3-D rendering of all the hard tissues and neck region, we look at the airway and visually see if there are any obstructions that could be occurring in the back of the throat that might be causing obstructive sleep apnea,” he says. Sleep apnea can have severe effects on someone’s health, including cardiovascular disease. Traditionally, a CPAP mask has been one tool in effectively treating sleep apnea. “We can now design oral appliances that have the same benefit,” Dr. Clark explains. “The appliance helps keep the lower jaw in a more forward position preventing the back of the tongue and soft tissue in the back of the throat from collapsing.” The appliance allows the airway to stay open and provide oxygen while someone sleeps. Dr. Clark arranges a sleep test to be done conveniently in

a patient’s home. The information collected from the sleep study is then submitted to a certified sleep physician who can make an Obstructive Sleep Apnea diagnosis. Once a diagnosis is received, the patient is fitted with the appliance. He works with the patients medical insurance to help cover of the cost. After 6 months of wearing the device, the doctor will arrange for another in home sleep study to ensure effectiveness. Dr. Clark was diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea, thoroughly educated himself and now educates his patients. “I wanted to take that information and apply it to my patients,” he says. “If I can save a life by possibly helping a patient discover this problem, it’s worth it.” “Looking back over my almost 25-year career, I don’t think I could have picked a better career,” Dr. Clark says. “I really love what I do.” TO LEARN MORE ABOUT SCOTTSDALE DENTAL EXCELLENCE, CALL 480.585.1853 OR VISIT WWW.SCOTTSDALEDENTALEXCELLENCE.COM.

World Class Neurosurgery and Spinal Surgery

Dr. Mohamed Abdulhamid, MD of Sono Spine Arizona and Royal Spine Surgery THE DECISION TO undergo neurosurgery or spinal surgery is not one to be made lightly. Dr. Mohamed Abdulhamid is the president of Sono Spine Arizona, currently one of only two campuses in the country that provide ultrasonic fusion-avoidance surgeries, and is also the founding director and CEO of Royal Spine Surgery. His focus is on minimally invasive, non-fusion same-day outpatient spine procedures that allow faster healing and recovery and return to work and activities. From the time he was in third grade, Dr. Abdulhamid realized he had an interest in neurosurgery. “It became of dream of mine,” he says. “I enjoyed the science behind it and the surgical aspect.” By his first year of medical school, his focus on getting into neurosurgery was set. Dr. Abdulhamid, is a graduate of the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine and he completed his residency training in neurosurgery at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY. He then completed his fellowship training in minimally invasive and complex spine surgery at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in Miami, FL. Some of the various issues that Dr. Abdulhamid treats include but are not limited to sciatica, disc bulge or herniation, spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, radiculopathy, pinched nerve and spinal cord compression. New technologies utilized to be able to treat patients include cervical disc replacement, motion-preservation devices, microscopic and ultrasonic spine procedures. Patients who visit Dr. Abdulhamid are not necessarily going to need surgery as there are most often non-surgical treatments available. He’s been practicing in the Valley since 2013 and opened Royal Spine Surgery in 2016. “Most patients are comfortable coming to see us when they know that only one in five patients actually has to have surgery. That one person who does have surgery, ninety five percent of the time has a same day surgery that is not spinal fusion,” says Dr. Abdulhamid. For those who need advanced minimally invasive spinal procedures, fusion-avoidance surgeries are done by Dr. Abdulhamid at

Royal Spine Surgery, or with the ultrasonic SonoSculpt® at Sono Spine Arizona. “My approach to spinal care is comprehensive,” he explains. “I evaluate the patient and the problems they have as a whole, and recommend treatment based on what I see.” Dr. Abdulhamid believes in a true comprehensive multidisciplinary approach to spine care involving input from colleagues in physical therapy, chiropractic therapy and pain management interventions to ensure that surgery is the patient’s last resort to take care of their neck or lower back pain. “Patients need not to fear about consulting with a spine surgeon, since in most cases, a patient’s condition might just need conservative non-surgical management, finishes Dr. Abdulhamid. “If surgery is needed, they most likely would be a candidate for one of the minimally invasive, non-fusion, same-day-outpatient spine procedures.” TO LEARN MORE ABOUT ROYAL SPINE SURGERY, CALL 480.372.3555 OR VISIT WWW.DRABDULHAMID.COM OR WWW.SONOSPINESURGERY.COM.

PREPLESS VENEERS

Transforming Patient’s Smiles Truly prepless veneers, with zero anesthetic used.

The conventional process of applying dental veneers generally involves shaving away a significant portion of the tooth. In many cases, temporary dental veneers must be worn while the permanent dental veneers are manufactured in a lab. Because a prepless porcelain veneer is as thin as a contact lens, the porcelain veneer application process requires little to no tooth reduction. The veneers are bonded to your teeth and you are left with the shape and color you’ve always wanted. The material is incredibly durable, and we stand behind them with a 5 year guarantee against breakage. The process is less invasive than the traditional porcelain veneer process. Most patients find that they immediately enjoy their new smiles without any post-procedure discomfort or sensitivity. You will be amazed at how beautiful, natural and authentic dental veneers look.

Expert Tax Evaluation for Today’s Complex Economy Joseph Rose, CPA

T

oday’s tax code is a mine field of information and rules. If you are a business owner, the tax code can be even that much trickier to navigate. With the help of a proactive CPA like the president of Rose Tax Consulting, Joseph Rose, affluent individuals and business owners can make highlyinformed important decisions that will place them in the best possible tax position. Rose received a BSBA in accounting from the University of Arizona and serves both the Valley and Tucson. Rose is also a certified tax strategist. Fewer than 300 specialists in 52 states have been awarded this specialized designation from the American Institute of Certified Tax Planners.

Rose has been working in the world of taxes for 25 years and had his CPA designation for most of this time. He has encountered just about every type of tax situation imaginable and relishes the chance to work with his clients in developing a proactive and informed approach with strategies for challenging tax situations. “I just love puzzles and tax code is a big puzzle,” Rose says. Rose offers advanced strategic tax planning to select clientele that are forwardthinking in their business formation and tax approach. “We only work with high-income affluent tax payers, usually business owners, to mitigate their taxes by substantial amounts depending upon their unique situation,” Rose

explains. “The more complex their tax situation is, the more goodies the tax code might have for them!” Conducting a thorough discovery is key as the law restricts Rose from recommending certain tax strategies without first doing intensive due diligence with a potential client. A client intake process starts with a discovery session that will include getting copies of taxes and a preliminary Q&A session with Rose Tax Consulting to see where additional credits and other tax opportunities may exist. “I go through their tax situation and match it up with tax strategies that might be available to them then discuss things in their tax situation that might be of concern under the new tax laws,” Rose says referring to the substantial changes in the new tax laws as of January 2018. Rose shared a recent case where he was able to achieve a massive 80 percent reduction in taxes for the client. This was accomplished through a process of reorganization, income splitting, retirement solutions and proper structuring which allowed the client to maximize their profit. This “found” money allowed the client to meet the expansion needs of their business without the need for financing. Rose’s newest best-selling book “The Great Tax Escape Book: Strategies for Early Planning and a Lower Tax Bill” is available through Amazon.com. “I don’t believe anyone should pay a dime more in taxes than the law requires,” Rose finishes. Rose Tax Consulting is located at 6424 E. Greenway Pkwy., Suite 100, Scottsdale. Call 480.210.2623 or visit www.RoseVFO.com for additional information.

BACKING THE BADGE The 100 Club of Arizona celebrates 50 years at its Schechterle Gala

BY MANDY HOLMES

IF YOU GO… What: Schechterle Gala When: Sept. 29, 6 p.m. Where: The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa, 6902 E. Greenway Pkwy., Scottsdale Tickets: General, $300 (individual) and $3,000 (table of 10); public safety, $175 (individual) and $1,1750 (table of 10) Information: www.100club.org

Since 1968, the 100 Club of Arizona has provided financial assistance and resources to families of first responders – including public safety agencies, officers, firefighters and EMT/paramedics – who are seriously injured or killed in the line of duty. The annual Schechterle Gala, A Black & White Affair will raise funds for the 100 Club of Arizona’s programs on Sept. 29 at The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa. Around 500 attendees are expected to gather for this black-tie optional evening, which will include a three-course meal followed by a program honoring a firefighter and law enforcement officer of the year as well as

highlighting some of the scholarship recipients and programs that the 100 Club of Arizona supports. Arizona Department of Public Safety Director Colonel Frank Milstead will serve as master of ceremonies, and guests will have the opportunity to support the fundraising efforts through silent and live auctions and robust raffles. The annual event is in honor of retired Phoenix Police Department Detective Jason Schechterle, whose story is a testament of true love and dedication. Growing up, Schechterle was determined to serve as a Phoenix police officer and after serving

four years in the Air Force, he achieved his goal to work on the streets of Phoenix as a police officer. Just 14 months into what was supposed to be a lifelong career, a taxi traveling at more than 100 mph struck Schechterle’s patrol car, resulting in the car bursting into flames and trapping him inside. Through a series of miraculous circumstances, Schechterle survived the crash but suffered severe burns to over 40 percent of his body, which drastically altered his appearance – but not his spirit. At this gala, guests will come together to honor Schechterle’s strength and courage as well as that of all first responders.

Luxe WHEELS

2018 MERCEDES-BENZ AMG GT R COUPE The beastly sports car takes performance driving to a new level BY JIM PRUETER

VITAL STATS: Base price: $157,000

AMG, Mercedes-Benz’s high-performance speed shop, has been hammering out a steady stream of unrestrained, tire-shredding, asphalt-ripping street machines for more than 30 years. The GT R is its latest. If you’re familiar with Germany’s famous motorsports complex, Nürburgring (nicknamed “Green Hell”), it’s worth knowing that the GT R got around the track in 7 minutes and 10 seconds, which Mercedes claims is a record for rear-wheel-drive cars. Low, wide and inspired by the 300 SL Gullwing racer, GT R sports a snarling, aggressive front end. Its wide, carbon fiber body panels, wheels and tires extend away from the height-adjustable, double wishbone aluminum suspension. Track-ready power comes in the form of a twin-turbocharged 577 horsepower, 4.0-liter, V-8 front engine with a massive 516 pound-feet of torque. It takes just 3.2 seconds to get from zero to 60 mph and has a top speed of 198 mph. All this power is quickly brought to a halt by

compound carbon-ceramic disc brakes. A dizzying amount of technology, engineering and design make the GT R a rewarding car to drive. Here are a few specs to impress: fourwheel steering and five selectable drive modes, damper-setting buttons, and a nine-position knob on the center of the dash to adjust the traction control system. Let’s not forget the rumbling of the deployable AMG performance exhaust system. But perhaps the best thing is that, thanks to smarter-than-you safety and technology, this twoseater is perfectly suitable for those who are not race car drivers. With exemplary performance, and though shockingly fast, it’s surprisingly easy to drive. At $157,000, GT R competes for the affections of the richly blessed, with the likes of the Acura NSX, Audi R8, Porsche 911 and Jaguar F-Type SVR. In a sea of those makes, you’ll definitely stand out at Saturday’s Scottsdale Cars and Coffee … provided you want the attention.

TAKE TO THE LAKE

Discover waterfront luxury and wine galore in New Buffalo, located along the shores of Lake Michigan

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

Lake Michigan, the only Great Lake located entirely in the U.S. and touching Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin, offers more than 200 miles of sandy white beaches with water sports, wineries, breweries and resorts throughout. So, where does one even start when it comes to planning a visit? For those seeking to avoid the massive, tourist-laden areas while enjoying the absolute best Lake Michigan has to offer, consider New Buffalo, the largest of the eight Southwest Michigan communities that make up Harbor Country. Just over an hour from downtown Chicago and less than 30 minutes from the iconic University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, New Buffalo is located in Berrien County along 15 miles of pristine shoreline.

Stay and Play When staying in a town such as this, a lakefront room is a must. Marina Grand Resort (www.marinagrandresort.com) – located directly on New Buffalo Harbor and within walking distance of specialty shops and restaurants ranging from decades-old ice cream parlors (try Oink’s) to high-end dinner fare (don’t miss Bentwood Tavern) – is among the top when it comes to luxury area accommodations. Each room has a patio or deck overlooking New Buffalo Harbor, and there are suite options well worth the upgrade, including Mariner Suites, which sleep four, and The Loft Suite, which boasts a massive lakefront patio, a full European kitchen, a fireplace, a master suite, and a loft with two additional beds. Other hotel amenities include a rooftop deck, bicycle rentals, free beach chairs and towels, and a kid-friendly game room. Plus, you can indulge your sweet tooth with nightly s’mores offered at on-site fire pits and a Ben & Jerry’s hotline in each room, which delivers any flavor of the popular ice cream to your room at the touch of a dial. Marina Grand also boasts several partners along the harbor offering pontoon, speed boat and jet ski rentals as well as fishing charters, yacht cruises and a bevy of surfing, paddleboarding, and kayaking rentals and classes.

Sip and Savor Within 15 miles of the beach are nine breweries, 23 wineries and two distilleries. Given the sheer number of options, there is no substitute for local expertise. And there are no better insiders than the folks at Grape and Grain Tours (www.grapeandgraintours. com), a group of Lake Michigan experts whose families have

98

So Scottsdale! September ‘18

lived in the area for generations and grew up watching the region evolve before their eyes. Grape and Grain offers standard tours with all tasting fees and lunch included, visiting three to six of their favorite spots for spirits, beer and wine. With access to a private guide, the tour shares the history of the area, which includes Kate Upton’s grandmother (yes, that Kate Upton) being among the pioneers of wine in the region. There is also a private VIP shuttle package for up to 14 guests, where you design a six-hour tour with their team and have the ability to add on all sorts of extras – additional tastes, behindthe-scenes tours, sweet treats and more – at nearly every stop. Whether touring with Grape and Grain or on your own, there are a few must-visit spots. Tabor Hill Winery & Restaurant The granddaddy of all the wineries in the region, Tabor Hill (www. taborhill.com) has produced wine for more than 50 years. Earlier this year, the 25-acre vineyard, working winery and full-service restaurant underwent a complete rebrand that included an extensive upgrade to the space, menu and the creation of two new original wine products: Sparkling Demi-Sec and Sparkling Demi-Red. Don’t miss lunch at the restaurant, but only after you’ve taken the vineyard tour, which includes a wine tasting while visiting the vines, barrel room and the bottling facility. Round Barn Winery Estate For something lively, Round Barn (www.roundbarnwinery.com) is known as “the spot” by everyone in town. The 48-acre space is hard to miss with a massive white barn in the center of the property, which offers tastings of wine and spirits (try the Black Walnut Crème liqueur), as well as additional indoor and outdoor spaces with frozen drinks on tap, beers by the glass, and live music every weekend through the end of October. They also have a sister property – Round Barn Public House – open for tasting and dining about 15 minutes away. Free Run Cellars More peaceful than party central, Free Run (www.freeruncellars. com) sits next to a serene pond with greenery as far as the eye can see. Their specialty is pairing handmade, locally sourced small bites with Midwest flair – think heirloom tomato gazpacho, creamy pimiento cheese dip, and grilled bruschetta – with small-batch wines by the glass. Like the wine, the food makes this one of the best hidden hot spots in the area.

Extra Excursions Other can’t-miss attractions include Journeyman Distillery, Beer Church Brewing Co. (an actual Civil War-era church restored as a brew house), several cider mills, U-Pick farms offering seasonal opportunities to pick a variety of fruits, and Warren Dunes State Park, famous for its 4-mile trek from forest to sand dunes with 360-degree views. For more information on New Buffalo and the surrounding area, visit www.harborcountry.org.

MAD ABOUT MEZCAL The smoky liquor that’s making its mark and where to find it

Less than 10 years ago, a million liters of mezcal, a spirit derived from agave much like tequila, were produced. By contrast, last year, farmers and distillers produced 6 million liters of the spirit, which is now sold in 27 countries. But how is it so different than tequila? “First, tequila can only be made from blue agave, whereas mezcal comes from nearly any agave variety,” says Supreet Singh of Breakthru Beverage Arizona. “Second, tequila can only legally be produced in Jalisco, Mexico, whereas mezcal comes from several Mexican states. Third, the production process is different, hence the distinctly smoky flavor of mezcal.” Intrigued? Here’s a guide on how to get your mezcal on.

Salt River Society Canal Club For this herbaceous drink, Rayu Mezcal is mixed with lemon, pineapple, Amaro herbal liqueur and aji amarillo, which is a bright orange, medium-hot chile that amps up the spice. $12. At The Scott Resort & Spa, 4925 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; 480.424.6095; www.thecanalclubaz.com.

Monaco Fat Ox Using premium Yuu Baal Espadin Reposado Mezcal, this spicysmooth sipper blends lemon and lime juices with agave nectar. It’s topped with an olive oil float, cracked pepper, and a dehydrated lime wheel garnish. $15. 6316 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; 480.307.6900; www.ilovefatox.com.

Pineapple Mezcal Riot House This handcrafted masterpiece is made with Agave de Cortés Mezcal, Peychaud’s Apertivo, fresh lime juice, and pineapple puree – all topped with kombucha. $12. 4425 N. Saddlebag Trail, Scottsdale; 480.935.5910; www.riothousescottsdale.com.

Sgt. Pepper Hearth ’61 Zesty Ancho Reyes Liqueur and refreshing grapefruit are infused with El Silencio Mezcal, served in a salt-rimmed rocks glass and garnished with a jalapeno. $15. At Mountain Shadows, 5445 E. Lincoln Drive, Scottsdale; www.mountainshadows.com.

The Stetson LON’s Last Drop Bar A balance of smoke, sweet and spice, this cocktail features El Silencio Mezcal, Luxardo Triplum, fresh lime, prickly pear puree, and agave nectar. $14. At The Hermosa Inn, 5532 N. Palo Cristi Road, Paradise Valley; 602.955.7878; www.hermosainn.com.

Molokai Mex Hula’s Modern Tiki Unlike rum-based Tiki drinks, this tropical tipple blends Don Amado Mezcal with key lime and pineapple juices. Housemade cayenne simple syrup complements the smokiness of the liquor and cuts the sweetness of the fruit. $11. 7213 E. 1st Ave., Scottsdale; 480.970.4852; www.hulasmoderntiki.com.

House Rules Blanco Tacos + Tequila Shake up traditional imbibing with an ounce of Montelobos Mezcal, served up in a wine glass with a chili-dusted orange and a Mexican beer. The idea is to shoot it, suck the orange, and then recover with the beer. $10. 6166 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; 480.305.6692; www.blancotacostequila.com.

Arcadia Farms first opened in 1990 as a small bakery. Nearly 30 years later, the now-Arcadia Farms Café has grown into a quaint place to gather for breakfast and lunch. With dishes like the lump crab cakes ($18), it’s easy to see why. They are made with lumpgrade crab meat, diced red bell peppers, organic chives, housemade mayonnaise, eggs, breadcrumbs and Old Bay seasoning. The mixture is formed into cakes and sauteed to order. Two are plated on a bed of field greens, julienned carrots, jicama and mango salsa, similarly made with peppers and chives. Puffy rice noodles are added for texture, and the dish is finished with a paprika-infused lime vinaigrette. Free from fillers, the crab shines, with the citrus adding balanced acidity. FORBIDDEN FRUIT

Farm & Craft’s refreshing Cucumber Melon cocktail is true to its name

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY ELIZABETH MARIE

Farm & Craft believes in sourcing ingredients locally for its cocktail program as well as weeding out artificial flavors and sweeteners. The brand is also a huge advocate for decreasing wastefulness. “For this reason, we offer our guests our Forbidden Fruit menu, where we use every element of the fresh fruit, quite literally,” says Matt Thompson, beverage director for Farm & Craft’s parent company, Riot Hospitality Group. The Forbidden Fruit cocktails not only use the juices of each fruit, but also the remains (such as the rind or skin) as the drinks’ vessel and garnish. “There are four options, including two – our Paloma and Greyhound – made with and served in a massive grapefruit, and then two – our Spicy Melon and Cucmber Melon – served in a whole watermelon,” Thompson says. The guest favorite Cucumber Melon ($14) is made by coring a watermelon and juicing its pieces, double-straining the juice into a shaker. Thompson then adds fresh lime juice, a little agave syrup, and Prairie Cucumber Vodka (which is distilled from organic corn) to the juice. The lime provides some zest to the flavor profile, while the agave syrup brings out the sweetness of the fruit. After a few good shakes, Thompson strains the shaker over the cored watermelon, which has been filled with crushed ice, and then tops it off with ginger beer for some bubbly action. He garnishes it with cucumber wheels, watermelon slices and fresh mint. “The flavor transports you poolside without being overly tropical or sweet,” Thompson says. “It’s very refreshing, and if you’re looking for a little more heat, then you’ll also enjoy the Spicy Melon.” Farm & Craft, 4302 N. CHEF CONVERSATIONS In the kitchen with Justin Macy of CIVANA Carefree

Justin Macy is the corporate executive chef for CIVANA Carefree, a newly launched resort focused on wellness, mindfulness and all things fresh when it comes to cuisine.

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS

You come from a long line of chefs! My grandmother was the chef back in the day at Biosphere II, the world’s largest environmental science laboratory (and yes, they had a restaurant inside!). My mother was a chef at Miraval in Tucson. Growing up, however, I was narrowly focused on football, with a full-ride scholarship to play in college by age 15. It wasn’t until later that I realized what rock stars I had in the family. So, how did you turn to cooking? I was working part-time at Miraval – thanks to Mom. With football out of the picture, I was a little lost, so I was just going through the motions in many aspects of my life. Then at 18 years old, I became a father. Everything changed. I buckled down. And you clearly had a knack for it. Tell us about the journey. I worked at Miraval from 1998 to 2016, and as executive chef from 2012 until my departure. Our focus on healthy cuisine earned us national acclaim and some amazing opportunities, including co-authoring three books and appearing on everything from Chopped to The Real Housewives of New Jersey. How did you make your way to CIVANA? After Miraval, I took a brief respite, then joined Tanque Verde Ranch, where I had the chance to reinvent the restaurant. A friend convinced me to check out CIVANA earlier this year, and I fell in love. Tell us about your CIVANA concepts. Cafe Meto is adjacent to the 22,000-squarefoot spa, so our focus is spa cuisine. At Terras, we have a little naughty (think select cheeses, nitrate-free bacon and grass-fed meats) along with a lot of nice (aka healthy options). What would readers be surprised to know about you? I love riding my Harley-Davidson, and I really love Disneyland. Seriously, I visit three or four times a year. CIVANA Carefree, 37220 Mule Train Road, Carefree; 480.653.9000; www.civanacarefree.com.

End NEW IN TOWN

HOW SWEET IT IS Sweet Dee’s Bakeshop opens in Old Town Scottsdale

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

Ever had a Cruffin? If not, Danielle O’Day, who is among the first bakers in the Valley to develop a recipe for this flaky, delicious combination of a muffin and a croissant, which can be infused with all sorts of flavors, invites you to come to her newly opened Sweet Dee’s Bakeshop for a taste. After working in the local culinary scene since 2011 at The Village Coffee and Creperie in Cave Creek and Soul Cafe in North Scottsdale, O’Day began getting personal requests for her desserts. “Whenever friends had special occasions coming up, parties to cater, and milestones to celebrate, they would always ask me to dream up a specialty cake or other desserts,” says O’Day, who began baking in high school and is completely self-taught. “Since 2015, I started fulfilling orders out of my house, but once word got out beyond my circle of friends, orders piled up – so much so, I decided to make this move and partnered with my mom, Lynda, to open my own storefront.” Enter local architect Cathy Hayes, known for her work in designing La Grande Orange Grocery, Chelsea’s Kitchen, Kaleidoscope Juice and North Italia.

114

So Scottsdale! September ‘18

“While actual sweet treats are Danielle’s forte, collaborating with chefs and business owners to develop restaurants, hotels and businesses that feel like a gathering location where relationships can grow and communities can flourish is my sweet spot,” Hayes says. According to Hayes, walking into Sweet Dee’s – which is 1,500 square feet including a patio – is designed to feel like a contemporary French bakeshop one would find in a trendy Los Angeles or New York City neighborhood. The central feature of the space is the massive pastry case, which, in addition to cruffins, boasts doughnuts, cookies, custom cakes, and tons of vegan and gluten-free options. Sweet Dee’s also serves breakfast and lunch, including avocado toast with lemon, fleur de sel, radish, cilantro, microgreens and a soft-boiled egg ($10); a salad with prickly pear tea-poached pears, whipped goat cheese, edible orchids, candied walnuts, arugula, and a honey vinaigrette ($11); and a caprese panini with organic pesto, mozzarella, tomatoes, roasted garlic, EVOO, and balsamic reduction on brioche bread ($11). “We offer Press Coffee, which is available by the cup or in lattes, espressos and mochas,” says O’Day, noting they also have smoothies, tonics, apple cider vinegar lemonade, and milkshakes. “You do not want to miss our milkshake flavor of the day, which runs the gamut from triple-chocolate to a truly outof-the-box purple ube yam option topped with a vanilla bean doughnut, whipped cream and edible orchid,” O’Day says. “Those with dietary restrictions can also enjoy them, as we also have a daily option that’s both dairy- and gluten-free.” Sweet Dee’s is open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is closed Sunday. Sweet Dee’s Bakeshop, 7350 E. Stetson Drive, Scottsdale; 480.994.6733; www.sweetdees.com.
