5.4 Read and listen to the tip to check your ideas. Do you agree with the conclusion?

World of English

NUTRITION TIP We all know that milk, beans, vegetables and fruit—or fruit juice—are good for us. And other foods are “bad”—soft drinks, white sug ar, alcohol, for example. But items like bread, cheese, eggs, meat, coffee and tea are controversial. Doctors, sci entists and nutritionists all have different opinions and say different things. Are these foods and drinks good or bad? We say it all depends on qu antity. Life is short! We say “Yes” to moderation, but “No” to exaggeration. What do you think? I agree. Moderation is good.

The words with pink letters in the nutrition tip are of Latin origin. So, the meaning and spelling are probably similar in your language. But be careful with pronunciation! Remember the stress is on the pink letters.

I disagree. I think bread and meat are very bad!

B

5.4 Read World of English, then listen to the tip again. Echo the words with pink letters. Any big surprises?

C

Weekends Around the World Different countries have different weekends. In Europe and the Americas, the weekend consists of Saturday and Sunday. Monday to Friday is called the workweek. In other countries, especially in the Middle East (countries like Israel, Egypt, Jordan and Iraq), the weekend starts on Thursday or Friday and ends on Saturday. People work from Sunday to Thursday. In countries like Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan and Oman the weekend is Thursday and Friday and the workweek is Saturday to Wednesday. Unfortunately, Monday is always a workday. Maybe that’s why there are a lot of negative songs about it: “Monday Monday,” “I Don’t Like Mondays,” “Just Another Manic Monday,” and the best one we know, “Blue Monday” by New Order.
