Teen Issues STARTER

You are going to read an article about teen issues. Read the titles and say: What kind of issues does the text deal with? 29

Body Image and Self-Esteem

I

’m fat. I’m too skinny. I’d be happy if I were taller, shorter, had curly hair, straight hair, a smaller nose, bigger muscles, longer legs. Do any of these statements sound familiar? Are you used to putting yourself down? If so, you’re not alone. As a teen, you’re going through a ton of changes in your body. And as your body changes, so does your image of yourself. Lots of people have trouble adjusting, and this can affect their self-esteem.

Why Are Self-Esteem and Body Image Important?

S

elf-esteem is all about how much people value themselves, the pride they feel in themselves and how worthwhile they feel. Self-esteem is important because feeling good about yourself can affect how you act. A person who has high self-esteem will make friends easily, is more in control of his or her behavior and will enjoy life more. Body image is how someone feels about his or her own physical appearance. For many people, especially those in their early teens, body image can be closely linked to self-esteem. That’s because as kids develop into teens, they care more about how others see them.

Girls

Por que, em geral, as mulheres são mais preocupadas com a aparência do que os homens?

Você concorda com o padrão de beleza imposto pela mídia?

Você faz exercícios físicos e se alimenta adequadamente para manter sua forma física?

Boys and Girls

How do you feel about the way your body looks? A Fine. I’m satisfied with my body most of the time. B OK, although there are parts of it I don’t like very much. C Bad. There are a couple of parts that I like, but the rest I hate. Do you think you’re fat? A Yes. I need to lose a few kilos. B No. I’m about the right weight for my height. C Yes, even though my family and friends say I’m not.

3 What should the female body look like?

A Thin and leggy. B Lean and healthy. C This is a stupid question. Female bodies come in all shapes and sizes.

6

Are women supposed to have shapely hips and thighs? A Yes. A healthy woman is supposed to carry some fat on her hips and thighs. B No. Women should be thin in these places; if anything wobbles, it is important to diet. C A bit. Women should have a few curves, but hips and thighs look better when they’re lean.

7

How often do you weigh yourself? A Not very often. B Every month or so. C Every day, or a few times every week.

4 Do you crash diet to lose weight?

A All the time. I could never be too thin. B Never. Crash dieting is bad for you. C Sometimes, maybe to get slimmer for summer.

5 Do you ever get depressed about the way

your body looks? A All the time. Life would be so much better if my body were beautiful. B Not really. I’m more interested in what my body can do (like sports) than what it looks like. C Sometimes, especially if other people tease me, or I see someone else with a more attractive body than mine.

110

8 Do you avoid places like the beach, public pools or changing rooms because you don’t want anyone to see your body? A Not at all. B Sometimes. C All the time.

Unit 12

104a111_U12_CH3_AF5_INT.indd 110

9/8/11 3:05:33 PM

Boys

3 What should the male body look like?

6

Can guys get eating disorders like anorexia nervosa or bulimia? A Yes. B No. C Only if the guy is a bit “girly”.

4

7

How do you feel about sports and exercise? A It’s the only way to get a good body, so I exercise like crazy every chance I get. B Sports are all about how I play, not how I look. C I mostly exercise for fun and fitness, but some things I do (like weight training) are just to improve my looks.

8

What do you think about steroids? A Steroids are dangerous and a cheater’s way of getting ahead. B They’re OK for those elite athletes who want to win gold medals, but those kinds of drugs aren’t for regular guys. C I’d never use steroids if I had the chance.

5

A Muscular with wide shoulders and tanned skin. B Lean and healthy. C This is a stupid question. Male bodies come in all shapes and sizes. Do you crash diet to lose weight? A All the time. A six-pack stomach is important. B Sometimes, maybe to lose the weight I put on over winter. C Never. Crash dieting is bad for you. Do you ever get depressed about the way your body looks? A All the time. Life would be so much better if my body were strong and muscular. B Not really. I’m more interested in what my body can do (like sports) than what it looks like. C Sometimes, especially if I am teased by other people, or I see someone else with a better body than mine.

Now count your points and check your results. Points: Question 1: A = 3 / B = 2 / C = 1 Question 2: A = 2 / B = 3 / C = 1

Results Score 8 to 12: It seems that your body image is in very poor shape. This is putting you at high risk of health problems like exercise dependence, eating disorders or low self-esteem. If you feel depressed about your body, it might be wise to get professional help.

Writing

Girls: Question 3: A = 1 / B = 2 / C = 3 Question 4: A = 1 / B = 3 / C = 2 Question 5: A = 1 / B = 3 / C = 2 Question 6: A = 3 / B = 1 / C = 2 Question 7: A = 3 / B = 2 / C = 1 Question 8: A = 3 / B = 2 / C = 1

Score 13 to 18: Your body image seems a little shaky, and could do with some work. A negative body image develops over the course of your life, so changing it can take time and effort. Browse through the Better Health Channel articles on body image for ideas and suggestions on how to feel more loving and respectful towards your body and yourself.

Boys: Question 3: A = 1 / B = 2 / C = 3 Question 4: A = 1 / B = 2 / C = 3 Question 5: A = 1 / B = 3 / C = 2 Question 6: A = 3 / B = 1 / C = 1 Question 7: A = 1 / B = 3 / C = 2 Question 8: A = 3 / B = 2 / C = 1

Score 19 to 24: Congratulations, it seems that you have a positive body image. Your healthy attitude is lowering your risk of problems like eating disorders or exercise dependence. However, there’s always room for improvement – you can further strengthen your positive body image by reading up on body image issues.

(Michael Jackson)

There’s a place in your heart And I know that it is love And this place could be Much brighter Than tomorrow And if you really try You’ll find there’s no need To cry In this place you’ll feel There’s no hurt or sorrow

For you and for me And the entire human race There are people dying If you care enough For the living Make a better place For you and for me

So make a better world Make a better world... Chorus

And the dream we were Conceived in Will reveal a joyful face And the world we once If you want to know why Believed in There’s a love that cannot lie Will shine again in grace Love is strong Then why do we keep There are ways to get there It only cares for joyful giving Strangling life If we try we shall see If you care enough for the Wound this Earth, crucify Living Its soul In this bliss we cannot feel Make a little space Though it’s plain to see Fear or dread This world is heavenly Make a better place... We stop existing and start Living Be God’s glow Chorus Heal the world Then it feels that always We could fly so high Make it a better place Love’s enough for us growing Let our spirits never die

In my heart I feel you are All my brothers Create a world with no fear Together we’ll cry happy Tears See the nations turn their Swords into plowshares We could really get there If you cared enough for The living Make a little space To make a better place... Chorus There are people dying If you care enough for the Living Make a better place For you and for me

How Does the Media Affect Body Image in Teens Teens??

By Denise Witmer, about.com Guide

WORKBOOK

Question: How does the media affect body image in teens? Answer: Advertising in teen magazines and on television typically glamorizes skinny models who do not resemble the average woman. In fact, today’s models generally weight 23% less than the average woman. Considering the average person in the United States sees approximately 3,000 ads in magazines, billboards, and television every day, your teenager is getting the wrong message about body image much too often. […] You can help your daughter minimize the media’s impact on her body image by: Limiting your teen daughter’s access to this type of advertising. This doesn’t mean that you need to take away all teen magazines, just be aware of which ones take this teen issue into consideration. Check them out at the store before purchasing a subscription. Starting an advertising awareness program in her school. Talking to her about the health risks of being so thin and use the media for teachable moments. Talking to her about how photos of models are altered and airbrushed. […]
