CANADA

The United States track 2 In the 1960s California surfers needed something to do on days without waves. They put roller skating wheels under a surfboard, and this is how "skateboarding" was born.

Mexico track 4 The Mexican tortilla is even more popular than bread in that country. The tortilla looks like a Brazilian-style pancake and is made from wheat or corn flour. Tortillas are used to make common Mexican dishes such as tacos, burritos, and enchiladas.

Jamaica track 3 The Rasta movement began in the 1930s and had a strong influence on the people of Jamaica. Followers of the movement are usually vegetarian; they have their own interpretation of the Bible; and they take pride in their African roots.

BRAZIL

Argentina track 5 The Rufous Hornero (Furnarius Furnarius rufus) rufus is the national bird of Argentina. In Brazil this bird is called the Jo達o-deBarro, since it protects itself from the wind and cold weather by building a nest of clay.

In these countries, English is spoken as an official language. NOTE: The other countries named are the ones mentioned in this book.

England track 6 The game of soccer, as we know it today in Brazil, originated in England in the 18th century.

SCOTLAND NORTHERN IRELAND

Japan track 7 In Japan people believe the number four is bad luck. Why? Because the number is pronounced "SHI", which means the same as death. Consequently, buildings in Japan have no fourth floor and apartment numbers don't end in four.

South Africa track 8 South Africa has eleven official languages. English is one of them, so English-speakers can travel there without any problems.

Australia track 9 Shark attacks were so common at some beaches in Australia that protective nets had to be installed. These nets separate the open sea, where sharks swim, from the water near the beach, where people swim.
