Mexico track 2 The Maya built a great pyramid at Chichen Itza to honor their feathered serpent god, Kukulcan. The Maya had a good understanding of astronomy: the number of steps on the pyramid's four stairways plus the top platform equals 365 – the number of days in the year. Also, the sides of the pyramid face north, south, east, and west.

track 4 Peru Machu Picchu is a stone city in the Andes. Built by the Inca in the 15th century AD, it has become one of South America's most important archeological sites. Because it is located high in the mountains, the city was not discovered by Spanish conquerors.

track 3 Brazil Rio de Janeiro's Christ the Redeemer statue stands on top of Corcovado mountain. Inaugurated on October 12, 1931, this statue is made of soapstone, which is strong enough to resist temperature changes and bad weather.

In these countries, English is spoken as an official language. NOTE: The other countries named are the ones mentioned in this book.

Jordan track 7 Petra is a city built in the sandstone cliffs of Jordan. More than 2,000 years old, it is one of the Middle East's largest archeological sites. Inhabited over the centuries by Arab tribes, it has been called "a red-rose city half as old as time."

The Seasons of the Year: Psychological Meanings The seasons of the year influence people. In this interview, the psychologist Lucy White, 40, talks about their psychological meanings. Abel: Can you tell us about the seasons of the year and their psychological meanings? Lucy: Sure. Let’s start with spring. Leaves and flowers appear in spring. Abel: I see. And what’s the psychological meaning of this season? Lucy: Spring represents optimism and renewal. It symbolizes youth, the first period of life. Abel: Interesting. What about summer? Lucy: In summer the weather is usually hot, you know. Abel: Right. Lucy: That means leisure, happiness, and relaxation. It symbolizes early middle age. Abel: And what about fall? Lucy: It’s the time of fruits and crops. Leaves fall off the trees in this season. Abel: So what does fall represent? Lucy: Fall represents mature ideas. It symbolizes late middle age. Finally, in winter the weather is cold. It’s a time of rest. Winter represents old age.

Frequency Adverbs Os principais advérbios de frequência são: always, usually, sometimes, rarely, never, once, twice, three times, four times, every day, dentre outros. Eles indicam com que frequência algo acontece. São usados com o Simple Present, antes do verbo principal e depois do verbo to be. Ex.: Jane rarely has sweet bread for breakfast. Mary is always early for her classes.

Future with going to Uso Going to é usado para expressar ações que estão planejadas para o futuro ou que serão realizadas num futuro próximo. É geralmente acompanhado de tonight, tomorrow, next month e tomorrow morning. Ex.: Gerald is going to a party tomorrow night. Sarah is going to take dance classes next Monday. Forma O futuro com going to é formado com verbo to be (Simple Present) + going to + o infinitivo do verbo principal. Ex.: A: What are you going to do next weekend? B: I’m going to stay over at a friend’s house. A: Are you going to wash your car next Saturday? B: Yes, I am. / No, I’m not. A: Is your mother going to make a cake next Friday? B: Yes, she is. / No, she isn’t. A: Are your parents going to the park next weekend? B: No, they aren’t. / Yes, they are.

Prepositions At É usada quando são mencionadas as horas e alguns períodos do dia. Ex.: at one o’clock; at 4:45; at midday; at night. É usada quando são mencionados lugares, referindo-se a eles como um simples “ponto no mapa”, sem alusão às suas dimensões. Ex.: at a friend’s house; at the mall; at work; at home. one hundred and eleven
