SELECTED WORKS

CHAPTER 00: introduction

MOCHAMAD RIDWAN FAUZI october 9th ,1991 male indonesian gpa 3.31 (on a 4.00 scale) rdwn.fauzi@gmail.com

People say that working in architecture is a pain in the neck. It is, but now I can see architecture and design as an enjoyable thing and make it my passion. What I love about working in this industry is people will get the experience by stepping into the space and yet perceive different things. Seeing the client impressed by our work is another type of dopamine spike and having a great senior / colleague to have discussion with would help me to grow faster. Being aware of what I have achieved help me a lot to even develop myself further and bigger.

MEKONG VIEW TOWER 5 typology // high-end residential tower size // 24 storey; 30,124 sqm stage, status // Design proposal location // Phnom Penh, Cambodia company, supervisor // E9AP Singapore, Jeff Imperial, Betsy Lau Chuk role // Floor plan development, landscape & facility design, facade exploration, BIM model and detail drawings

selected work — 01

Mekong View Tower V situated abreast the Mekong River, is a 24-storey residence favored with several vantage points to the river, cityscape, and the suburban expanse. The design is conceived from the inspiration of a metamorphic “tree” superimposed onto each other creating an ingenious dynamic facade design. A central courtyard concept was implemented to allow maximum exposure to natural sunlight and ventilation. Landscape softens the inner environs of the building infusing a natural and pleasant setting for the residents.

16B LEEDON PARK typology // good class bungalow size // 2 stories, 1,140 sqm stage, status // construction, built (finished) location // 16B Leedon Park, Bukit Timah, Singapore company, supervisor // E9AP Singapore, Nadia L Mustopo, Betsy Lau Chuk role // Partial detailed plan, shopdrawing check, site visit, site meeting, coordination, details, authority, submission, attend site inspection

Located at Bukit Timah, Singapore. The owner wanted a tranquil environment and a house that acts as an escape from hustle bustle of Singapore. The house programming was intented to cater the whole family needs, therefore entertainment room, prayer room, swimming pool, two types of dining area, roof terrace, and lift was provided.

selected work — 02

Concept of the house is simple, elegant, with rustic touch which integrating straightforward floor plan with various material such as metal, glass, marble, granites, and timber. Swimming pool as the main interaction area for the family was shaped as such looked like a paint palette as symbolization of the owner’s hobby: chinese painting.

CATHOLIC ARCHDIOCESAN HUB typology // Mixed use development: retreat centre & archdiocese facility size // 4 storey; 51,170 sqm stage, status // Proposal for tender location // 49 Upper Thomson Road, Singapore company, supervisor // E9AP Singapore, Jeff Imperial, Nadia L Mustopo, Betsy Lau Chuk role // Floor plan development, landscape design, facade exploration, 3D model, chapel design

The Archdiocese’s objective is to optimise the church owned land for institutional purposes. It intends to build on this prime freehold site an iconic, integrated facility ti accomodate a home for retired priests to lead an active live; an archdiocesan centre for the formation of Catcholic with self -contained ancillary and complementary supporting facilities.

selected work — 03

The design approach for the Catholic Archdiocesan Hub is a humble and dignified interpretation of the brief and the site context. In optimising the existing site, the building functions and forms are articulated in synthesis with the land. The interplay of forms, land, and the mesh skin of the building simulates a “Cradle” protecting the people and creating an envelope which signifies God’s encompassing nature. The design also maximises natural light and ventilation as an approach towards sustainability.

Natural light and ventilation play a significant role in the design. In the day, light infiltrates into the spaces. At night, the building stands as a beacon, guiding one along the right path, “through the darkest valley. Courtyard spaces in the various buildings are oriented along the green spine and around the chapel, creating communal spaces for activities and personal reflection.

CHAPTER 1:

Work Experience

04

ST JOHN’S HOME FOR ELDERLY PEOPLE typology // elderly care centre size // 5 storey; 4,620 sqm project type // Competition location // 69 Wan Tho Avenue Sngapore company, supervisor // E9AP Singapore, Jeff Imperial, Nadia L Mustopo, Betsy Lau Chuk role // Floor plan development, facade exploration, 3D model, landscape perspective, social enterprise perspective

The general architectural language is being kept linear and compositional as a base for the entire development. Functionality, flexibility, simple lines, generous spaces and a natural elegance are combined to create a space where people feel free to live and play, relax and entertain. The design provides opportunity to engage seniors who wants to play, regardless of age, capabilities, gender or social status, as active members of the neighbourhood. The holistic provision of facilities and communal spaces enable everyone with the activities programming, physical space and social support they need to pursue an active, healthy life. The variety of communal facilities allow for an engaging, optimal experience for seniors during socialisation activities.

selected work — 04

The objective of project was to create a conducive cosy home for the needy elderly to have a healthier and better life through the impactful experience of aspirational architectural design for living and activities. The design involves cultural reintegration of the senior community to the current younger society, meshing of traditional textures with the modern motifs, blending conventional forms with cutting-edge expressions. The modern touch to the facade adapts to the changing preferences and needs by the senior community. Today’s seniors have experienced modern architecture, and have adapted to the trend for years.

37

Perspective is generated with sketchup and photoshop by Ridwan

SOCIAL ENTERPRISE

The elders are encouraged to partake in rendering meaningful services to the community through the Social Enterprise Cafe right at the heart of the complex. The Social Enterprise Cafe can provide an alternative casual dining option for the residents and community.

Concept Planning

The residents private quarters is housed within the upper levels of the main building block. Being surrounded by low-lying structures, the five-storey accommodation tower symbolically reinstates the role of the elders as the overseers of the community. At each corner of every floor lies a communal space for all to interact and socialize. At the crest overlooking the heartlands is a personal outdoor space for the residents.

38

Pedestrian Circulation

Pedestrian circulation is generally divided into private and public domain. 1st and 2nd storeys are for public access with communal, leisure, recreational, and healthcare facilities. 3rd, 4th, 5th and roof storey are for residents with restricted access for privacy. Vertical connectivity is provided by 2 sets of lifts and staircases at 2 ends of the building.

Site photos: existing condition

A new system of artistic creation has been adopted to embrace the aesthetic of variety, pluralism and contemporary composition with balance, harmony, and proportion. The facade design is rendered with mixture of raw tradition and new materials and expressed in a contemporary modern style.

42

The facade fronting the main avenue, is embellished with modern raw concrete panels on one side and contemporary glazing on the other. The raw concrete materials exude the ethos of a charitable sheltered home. The dynamic contemporary glazing element exude vibrancy and happiness.

HOUSE @ KALIBATA RESIDENCE typology // Landed house size, area // 2 storey, 245 sqm stage, status // construction, on progress location // Kalibata, Jakarta, Indonesia company, team // Design Alliance Workshop, Andi Anggoro, Patriot Negri, Khairul Umam role // architecture design, interior design, site visit, construction drawings, detailing, coordinations

The project is a renovation and expansion of existing house. After client bought the house next to it, the aim for the project was how to maximize the site area to create a comfortable environment whilst fulfill the requirements from client. There are 4 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, a swimming pool, and car porch for 5 cars. Client was intend to keep the house only to one storey in order to have a more horizontal movements.

selected work — 07

As requested by client, the expression of the building was more towards contemporary. The main challenge is how to get a harmonious design language with regard to the mixed style.

63

Hustle bustle daily life in Jakarta has brought its citizen towards unpleasant routine. Role of a house is expanded to the point that bringing natural elements to a house is necessary. Given the condition of rectangular hoek site of this project, “Spill of Nature” was proposed as the strategy for the house development. It potrays a tranquil environment throughout the premise. A central courtyard was implemented to allow maximum exposure to natural sunlight and ventilation. Amount of landscape and water features softens the inner environs of the site infusing a natural and pleasant setting for the residents. The design concept which maximises natural light and ventilation was an approach towards sustainability.

EXISTING

ALTERATION & EXPANSION

Project was meant to be a renovation and expansion of existing house. Existing house was situated at hoek parcel which its facade exposed on two sides.

Part of existing were retained whilst the rest were demolished. The expansion planned to be more horozontal in order to maintain social engagement.

SPACE PLANNING

BREATHING SPACE

The massing being kept linear and compositional as a base due to 3 main functions. Common area acts as the ‘epicentre’ which promotes a dynamic interaction.

VISTAS Pool, ponds, and courtyard along the common and private space become desired vistas as an approach towards tranquil environment and visual comfort.

64

Void and interlude spaces were injected by water-element and plants. Existence of outdoor spaces would become a breathing space for the family.

ITERATION & DETAILS Fenestration, shapes, and facade articulations were defined to create an image that represents a contemporary architecture form with a homey feeling.

Bogor was one of the closest major city from Jakarta. Nowadays, there are some areas that not really well-organized by the goverment which result in organic grows of housing in the riverfront area. Kemitraan Habitat (our client) as Non Governmental Organization initiated to make changes through creative idea towards this riverfront zone. In the future, this idea would be brought to the government in order to trigger any ‘top-down’ action.

selected project — 08

The aim of the project was to create an intervention model as a typical solution for areas with similar issue in the city. The approach we did for the design was by free up the river setback and ‘re-fill’ it with enhanced correspond programs.

Jakarta is ‘sick’ today, number of problems has become part of daily life. In the near future it will not be significant but in 10, 25, 30 years from now it is highly possible getting worse, it would give more disavantage than the benefit. Nowdays, at the era of rapid development, is the critical time to start planning and stepping up.

Dukuh atas as one of major area in Jakarta is a meeting point of various user, building typology, city stratum, transport mode, road hierarchy and activities. This slice of city is a good sample of how the image of developing countries in South East Asia take form, showing us the whole spectrum of built environment with its problems.

At first, its only complementary for user within the radius. In the future when people get used to walk or bike and cars are no longer dominating the road, the car par lot could be converted to a unit, so the landed house can be re-converted as soil and greenery

In the future, car park shall not be used only for the private building, but also 24hrs for public (e.g resident in the vicinity). By doing this, it would help the load of parking on the street, therefore the street can be converted to pedestrian and green walkway

The physical environment of cities is major representation of a biophilic cities. relation e.g: selling, buying, trading, recycling, waste processing

However, the true extent to which a city and its residents can be said to be biophilic will depend on some other things such as: amount of time residents spend outdoors, how much they care and have knowledge about nature around them, people are actively involved in experiencing nature like gardening, biking around, bird watching, etc. Furthermore, in biophilic environment, citizens have abundant opportunities to be engaged in caring for the nature around them. Therefore, creating biophilic environment will need amount of time and strong collaboration between stakeholders.

THE ‘HEART’ TO IMPROVE URBAN METABOLISM

ertain programs are integrated into the cility such as urban farming, recycling ntre, trade market, fish pond, public aces, waste treatment, etc. Injecting ose will knit a new relations to the rrounding. OTI BUBANE

PROPAN RESTORAN NUSANTARA -2017 (1st winner) brief // Restaurant in priority tourism area that represents the locality of the location size // 100sqm (expandable up to 200sqm) stage, status // Conceptual location // Morotai, North Maluku, Indonesia role // team leader, macro and micro conceptual thinking, produce diagrams, perspective, design write up team // Steven Widyatmadja, Muhammad Hadyan, Daniel Caesar Pratama

Untouchable Morotai Island has a stunning nature, local culture, and interesting relic of war history. This tourist attraction which famous of its white beach and the sea activities has indigenous people who still lives in a simple way. The architecture character of this area tend to be modest and tropical.

selected work — 03

The approach for the design is adapting the local architectural character in a contemporary way but yet still functional. In order to achieve that, one of traditional building called “Rumah Sasadu” which is a small public hall is being transformed proportionally. The articulation of its roof and the location of where its projected to be built implies a ship (oti) that is being docked at the beach (bubane). In the end of the day, the restaurant is expected to be visited by lot of tourists.

103

Photos of Traditional Building “Sasadu” and other proposed features MODIFICATION STEP

BASIC STEP

Adapting traditional building elements such as shape, colour scheme, materiality, scale and openness. Then modifying programs, shape, and details in order to optimize the building performance.

104

TYPICAL LOCATION

Beach as the major potential area in Morotai is projected to be the location for restaurant

ADDITIONAL NEEDS As a respond to restaurant function, some new programs are added: hydroponic, surf board rack, feet-cleaning area

MASSING

PROGRAMS + CIRCULATION Circulation from land to the sea is created, dining area is located at perimeter and service area is at the centre

Structures and roof of “rumah sasadu” is created as the last part of basic steps

EXPANSION PLANNING

OPTIMIZATION

FINAL RESULT

Openings are created to optimize the natural light and air to come through the building. Minimizing usage of air-con and lighting

Architectural expression of “rumah sasadu” in a contemporary way. It looks like a boat docking at the beach (oti bubane)

Beach setback as restriction. Therefore, the rectangular massing is put hugging the setback line

Anticipating the expansion, 2nd floor is introduced within the space of the roof and terraces is created on two sides of 1st floor
