Our identity Rijk Zwaan is a family owned company, established by our founder Mr Rijk Zwaan in 1924. The last decades have been characterized by a fast international expansion and an increasing role for research. Rijk Zwaan has always been a family company, except for the period 1986-1989, when BP owned the company. After a management buy-out by Ben Tax, Anton van Doornmalen and Maarten Zwaan (a nephew of Rijk Zwaan), the company returned into family hands. The current board of directors consists of Ben Tax, Kees Reinink and Marco van Leeuwen. Rijk Zwaan has a unique company culture. Part of this culture is a careful selection when hiring new employees, focused on the will to work together. This leads to a good team spirit, loyal and involved employees, and long term employment. A key element of the Rijk Zwaan company culture is an entrepreneurial spirit, with plenty of room for creativity and innovation. We also stand for friendly, open and clear contact with each other, and with our partners. Along with this go high moral standards and values, both internally and in our external business dealings. 4

We share Moctar’s ambition to use Senegal’s potential
Moctar Fall started his career as a lecturer at a university. He enjoyed transferring knowledge to motivated people, first in his country of birth Senegal and later in France. He followed the same path when he started consultancy work for the government. Moctar became involved in several agricultural projects and started to become interested in the business aspect. During one of those projects he visited eight West African countries, and was struck by what he saw: simple but courageous farmers who worked very hard but were not rewarded for it. He knew what he really wanted to do, and so established an NGO to help these growers to have a better income. As he became more involved in agriculture, so his ambitions grew further. To have a bigger impact, he decided to establish a limited company in Senegal, called Agroseed. In this role he can really help to use the great potential for vegetable production in his country: by delivering high quality seeds and training growers so they can increase yield and improve quality. In this process, Moctar fully recognizes the great importance of people. He knew that he had to find a partner with the same human approach, and found it in Rijk Zwaan. Together they share a long term approach and a strong belief in open and honest communication, as well as an optimistic view on the future of Senegal. Moctar’s ambitions reach further than doing business. He wants to help Senegal in using its potential to the fullest. Rijk Zwaan shares this ambition. Together with Moctar, we are working towards a healthy future.

We share Amare’s openness about success and improvements
After Amare Gebeyehu graduated in horticulture from the University of Ethiopia, he held management and consultancy positions in different agricultural companies. This broad perspective helped him to find out that he really wanted to focus on vegetable growing because it is a young industry in his country with a lot to learn and improve, and where every day is different. Together with his partner Jan Prins, he is now running the company Paprikana. Thanks to Ethiopia’s perfect climate and soil conditions the company is able to develop a high quality export product. In 25 different crops, amongst which are peppers, tomatoes and lettuce, they keep on looking for improvement in yield and quality. Within this process, he has been working together with Rijk Zwaan for 8 years now. Paprikana does not only buy high quality hybrid seeds from Rijk Zwaan, but also takes advantage of their international knowledge and expertise. Amare feels that his supplier is also a partner: really involved and willing to tackle problems together. Amare also has the same open attitude towards his fellow growers. The door of Paprikana is always open to demonstrate their newest facilities and cultivation techniques. Amare knows that the Ethiopian vegetable sector offers enough room for everyone, and that every success or improvement by one company benefits the whole sector in the end. Amare works in a vegetable company in Ethiopia that combines vegetable production with a consultancy role. Rijk Zwaan shares this openness. Together with Amare, we are working towards a healthy future.

We share Renalda’s faith in the future for smallholders
Renalda Bernard Mlay used to work as a bank employee. After 23 years, she decided to follow her passion from her younger days and become an entrepreneur in the agribusiness. Believing in starting small, she decided to begin with two self-made 300 m2 tunnels in the backyard of her parents’ home in Moshi, Tanzania. Thanks to her background in finance she realised that she had to take things seriously and invest in the right materials. Renalda decided to grow red and yellow sweet peppers and sourced high-quality seedlings from Rijk Zwaan. The transplanting went well and not a single plant was lost, but over the course of the season she made some common beginner mistakes. As a result, the plants were too well fed and watered and hardly produced any flowers and fruits. Crop advisors from Rijk Zwaan visited her on site to help. They gave her some basic tips about pruning and crop maintenance and advised her to change the fertiliser regime. The first harvest was completed in the summer and Renalda recovered the cost of the seedlings immediately after selling the first 150 kg. Furthermore, a substantial amount of money was left over for new investments. This result pleases Renalda and inspires many others: not only her friends and relatives in nearby towns, but also many other potential smallholders living further afield. Renalda has made a successful start as a smallholder in Tanzania and sees many more opportunities ahead. Rijk Zwaan shares her faith in the future. Together with Renalda, we are working towards a healthy future.

We share Johan’s choice for long term partnerships
Johan Joubert lives near Johannesburg and trained as an accountant. Once he had decided that he wanted to involve himself in agriculture he was able to raise financing and so used the opportunity to purchase a cucumber farm with 30 tunnels as a going concern. As he was new in the business, Johan decided to surround himself with advisers he could trust and work with, and not to be influenced by every visitor to his farm. One of them was Rijk Zwaan, who advised him about the right varieties. It helped him to become a reliable supplier of cucumbers to a major supermarket. Soon he was ready to expand so he could meet the growing demand for high quality products in South Africa. With the purchase of a new location and the extension of his assortment with peppers, Johan faced new challenges. There were issues around water quality and a lot to learn about the new crops and new greenhouse structures. Through many in-depth discussions around cultivation and crop management he once again took full advantage of his network. Johan learned that being an entrepreneur in agribusiness means dealing with many unexpected events, such as when a root disease hit his crops recently. He lost up to 70% of the plants but used this setback to further improve his business. Together with Rijk Zwaan and a local plant raiser Johan decided to investigate the possibility of grafting. He is now one of the pioneers of this technique in South Africa, and his farm business has grown to employ over 100 people. Johan is an entrepreneur who believes that the biggest chance for success is to trust and work with partners with the right expertise. Rijk Zwaan shares this choice. Together with Johan, we are working towards a healthy future. Product Catalogue

Physiological races Bl:1-15 of Bremia lactucae (downy mildew) in lettuce are to the best of our knowledge no longer observed in practice in Europe nowadays. Therefore reference to the races Bl:1-15 is no longer made in resistance claims with regard to Bremia lactucae. From September 1st 2014 onwards, the resistance claim of a variety refers only to Bl:16-32.
