‘Tripoli: The architecture of Co-existence’ is a study on how a public space can encourage a sense of value and embody a sense of ’belonging’ as a method to bridge and unite between a split society. The architectural outcome is a free flowing space of stages and exhibitions that unite the things that are common to the locals across the different societies; Music, Dancing, Language, Crafts and Arts. The project attempts to merge specifically between what is Islamic and what is Christian (Western influence), as these are the main aspects of the culture and history. The architecture is inspired and influenced by the local architecture and space experience. The Ottoman and Mamelouke arches, most commonly known as Islamic are represented in the structure, but built in concrete, which historically speaking is of ’western influence’. The structure itself is an open and open space building, which

refers to the typology of the ’Christian architectures’. At the same time, the architectural experience is very inward facing, generated by a central void that gives views across the floors and direct relation to the open, free flowing ground floor. The void is inspired by the role of the ’courtyard’ as seen in the traditional Islamic residences - a central space of important social values, to which all movement is connected. The architecture of the flow is a direct merge of the flow of the Islamic city and the Christian city. The ascending is a double helix movement, but while being a very open, yet quite ’direct’ movement it is experienced as a maze, due to the architecture of the structure.
