Children as young as 2 years up to 4 years old will be able to attend, with a parent, to join with other little ones, on a journey of exploration through music, movement and play. The classes will last for 45 minutes, followed by a free drink and biscuit and a chat with the other families. Interested parents can opt for a 2 week trial to see if their child enjoys Stagecoach. Classes will run in term time on Saturday mornings, at the Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College, In Darlington. Initial interest has been very encouraging, so please enquire early to avoid disappointment. Healthwatch Darlington (HWD) gives children, young people, and adults a powerful voice - making sure your views and experiences are heard by those who run, plan, pay for and monitor local health and social care services. We believe that no matter who you are, where you live, or how old you are, you do have a voice and you have the right for that voice to be heard. We have been out and about gathering your views and thoughts and actively engaging with children and young people at many different venues in the town. We try to reach out to all members of our community including our “easily overlooked” groups. We have set up our Black Minority and Ethnic (BME) Project which is involving and engaging with BME communities on issues that might affect their health and social care. The project is providing opportunities to share experiences, needs and issues. It is culturally sensitive meaning that by identifying and understanding the needs of our diverse population, HWD can build on improved communication amongst different ethnic groups, as well as dealing with health and social care concerns, issues and barriers. We are keen to hear your experiences or those of your family, friends or neighbours and would be very happy to visit groups in your community. TOP COLLEGE FOR A GREAT FUTURE

In the past few weeks the home of Mowden Park R.F.C has played host to a high profile press conference by England Rugby World Cup winning captain Katy Mclean MBE and current England captain Tamara Taylor, along with the launch of a prestigious new partnership for the Mowden Park Community Scheme.

NEW KING OF THE KITCHEN

This was followed by a meeting between a number of local youngsters and Lawrence Dallaglio OBE, a member of the 2003 England Rugby World Cup winning squad, for the Duke of Edinburgh Award initiative.

David Hunter, who has been cooking up a storm at Headlam Hall for the past 14 years, will now lead the kitchen at The Rose & Crown at Romaldkirk, Teesdale, which has already been awarded 2 AA rosettes for food excellence.

One of the region’s top chefs has left Headlam Hall to help steer its sister site to new culinary heights.

CALL FOR FOSTER CARERS TO LOOK AFTER SIBLINGS Darlington’s Family Placement Service is calling on more people to foster brothers and sisters in care. A shortage of households willing to accommodate large groups of siblings means that some brothers and sisters could be split up to find the most suitable placement for them. “If you have the spare bedrooms in your household and a real passion for giving children a safe and stable home, why not consider fostering?” states Hilary Tillotson, Manager - Family Placement Service. “You could make real difference providing a home for a sibling group of two or three children ensuring that their family bond and identity stays strong.” Fostering is more open than ever for people of a variety of backgrounds; it

At QE they receive the highest standard of education and have the opportunity to acquire knowledge and skills that will equip them for the workplace, no matter how high their ambitions. Students from the College have a long track record of winning places at the world’s most prestigious universities and on highly competitive courses such as medicine and veterinary science. doesn’t matter whether you are married or not, own your own home or rent. One of the biggest myths is people who are single thinking they cannot foster when they can, especially for siblings People that become foster carers for siblings receive training during the Skills to Foster course so that they have the best preparations for welcoming brothers and sisters to their foster home. They also have ongoing support from a supervising social worker and the team at Family Placement Service. The Family Placement Service website (www.darlington.gov.uk/fostering) has information and links for anyone seeking correct information about fostering. You can become a foster carer for siblings by calling 01325 406120 or emailing fostering@darlington.gov.uk

For QE students the future doesn’t always mean university. Many students choose to go straight into employment and others are attracted by Higher Apprenticeships which combine employment with further qualifications. To support students in their career aspirations, the College has a number of ground breaking schemes for students such as the Future Engineers’ Scheme and Performance Sport intended to enhance their employability and accelerate their progress. QE has a vast range of extra-curricular activities. Whether it’s music, drama, sport, volunteering or simply enjoying the buzz of life in a real sixth form college, QE has it in abundance. Best of all, you can enjoy the experience safe in the knowledge that outstanding support and guidance will ensure that you have a bright future ahead of you. Darlington Today | 5

A pantomime is for life, not just for Christmas and this Easter Darlington Civic is giving families another chance to holler, “he’s behind you,” with a spectacular stage production of Beauty and the Beast. Lee Latchford Evans, who sold more than 20 million records as one fifth of pop band STEPS, will star as the Beast, with Strictly Come Dancing finalist and Tracy Beaker actress, Dani Harmer, appearing as his Beauty. They’ll be joined for the fun-filled panto by comedy legend Bobby Davro, with creators Enchanted Entertainment promising wonderful sets, brilliant costumes, highoctane dance routines and plenty of music to please all ages. “The show’s got a great cast of TV stars, a host of brilliant songs and truly amazing dancers,” said producer Jezz Weatherall.

Pasha, who specialises in Latin and Ballroom dancing, has competed at a national and international level, but says nothing quite compares to the experience of Strictly. “In competition you’re responsible for yourself,” he said “but there’s much more pressure in having a celebrity that needs to be nurtured. “I’m a firm believer that anyone can dance though and it was incredible to win with Caroline, who’d made such a drastic improvement during her time on the show.” While it’s unlikely that Pasha’s dream dance partners “Madonna or the Queen of England” will be making surprise appearances during Life Through Dance, audiences can still expect an evening to remember with breathtaking choreography, sensational music and amazing costumes. Tickets* for Pasha Kovalev - Life Through Dance are priced from £24 per person, with tickets* for Beauty and the Beast priced from £18 for adults and £16 for children. STRICTLY SENSATIONAL Since waltzing to victory with TV presenter Caroline Flack, Strictly Come Dancing champion Pasha Kovalev has barely stopped spinning. The Siberian-born star, who was twice runner-up on the BBC show, has already penned an autobiography and will be quickstepping his way to the Civic stage on Saturday April 11. “The most incredible thing about my last visit to Darlington was the people,” he said. “The audience never hold back and it’s paradise for a live performer. “For my new tour, Life Through Dance, I’ll be showcasing many of the dance styles people have seen on TV, with a touch of added glamour and personality thrown in.” Darlington Today | 9

HOP BACK IN HISTORY Many of the North East’s major historical attractions are just a hop, skip and a jump away this Easter half term. We took a break from gorging on Easter eggs and hot cross buns to see what a trip back in time has to offer for the whole family…

RICHMOND CASTLE With breathtaking views of the Yorkshire Dales, Richmond Castle is one of the finest tourist attractions in North Yorkshire, as well as one the greatest Norman fortresses in Britain. Originally built to subdue the unruly north of England, this 800-year-old site now boasts an interactive exhibition and secluded Cockpit Garden, perfect for quiet walks and picnics. Extended opening hours will be operating from March 29, with an Easter Adventure Quest taking place between 11am and 5pm from Friday April 3 to Monday April 6. Entry is priced at £5 per adult and £3 for children aged five to 15. For more information search www.english-heritage.org.uk or call 01748 822493

KIPLIN HALL Looking around Kiplin Hall, near Scorton, it’s easy to imagine that the owners have just stepped out for a moment. Almost everything in this Jacobean manor, including furniture, paintings and personal memorabilia, belonged to the families that owned the property between 1620 and 1971. It is displayed in much the same way as it would have been when the family of Admiral Walter Carpenter was in residence at the end of the 19th century. Most of the rooms in the house, originally built by George Calvert, Secretary of State to James I and founder of Maryland, USA, are now open to the public, with handy information sheets available as you walk through the Hall. The extensive grounds, which are currently undergoing major restoration, also offer the opportunity to enjoy leisurely strolls around the lake, through woodland and across the parkland, as well as a Walled Garden, formal gardens and a small museum of the garden’s history. The Gardens and Tea Room are open Sunday to Wednesday until October 28, as well as on Good Friday and Easter Saturday. The Hall itself will also open on Good Friday and Easter Saturday and then Sunday to Wednesday from April 5. A special event celebrating the 150th anniversary of the publication of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland will also be held from Good Friday to Easter Monday with fun activities for children in the gardens from 10am until 5pm and the Hall from 2pm until 5pm. Admission is charged at £5.30 per adult and £2.30 for children aged five to 15 for access to the gardens only, and £8.30 and £4.30 respectively for access to both the Hall and gardens. For more information call 01748 818178 or visit www.kiplinhall.co.uk

BOWES MUSEUM

DURHAM CATHEDRAL

This magnificent French chateau, created in the late 19th century by John and Joséphine Bowes, houses internationally renowned collections of decorative and fine arts spanning five centuries.

Standing proudly over the medieval city of Durham, this World Heritage site is the shrine of St Cuthbert, seat of the Bishop of Durham and instantly recognisable as one of the great buildings of Europe.

Its permanent collections include works by artists such as Canaletto, El Greco, Courbet and Turner, as well as the most extensive collections of ceramic in Britain.

It would be easy to escape for hours here, taking a guided tour, climbing the Cathedral Tower and dining in the Undercroft Restaurant, but one of our favourite things to do at the moment is helping to recreate the Cathedral in Lego.

This Spring, the Bowes Museum’s temporary exhibitions will include a tribute to the elegance of feathers in the fashion industry, which closes on April 19, and a never before exhibited body of work featuring former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, as imagined by the renowned satirical cartoonist and illustrator, Gerald Scarfe. Younger visitors will appreciate the museum’s array of games and activities, such as dressing up areas and fun worksheets, as well as the wide range of interactive sessions which run throughout the year. This includes Eggscellent Easter Crafts on April 1 and 2, a Family Fun Day on April 6 and a chance to go behind the scenes with the museum’s conservators on April 7 and 8. The Bowes Museum is open daily from 10am until 5pm. Entry is free for children and £9.50 per adult. Some activities incur an additional charge. For more details and start times visit www.thebowesmuseum.org.uk or call (0) 1833 690606

Once completed, this unique model will incorporate 350,000 bricks and stretch more than 3m wide and 1m high. Visitors can add their own brick in exchange for a £1 donation, with all proceeds being used to help transform public access to some of the Cathedral’s most spectacular spaces and the collections it has acquired over the centuries. Durham Cathedral is open until 6pm Monday to Saturday and 5.30pm on Sunday and entry is free. A number of special activities will also be taking place during the Easter holidays. This includes a free Egg Hunt between 10.30am and 3.30pm on April 7 and 8. Monk Egfrith will also be telling the Easter Story on both dates, with Easter craft activities on April 9. Both of these events incur a £2.50 admission charge per child. For more information please visit www. durhamcathedral .co.uk or call 0191 386 4266

THE MUSEUM OF HARTLEPOOL AND HARTLEPOOL MARITIME EXPERIENCE Hartlepool’s Maritime Experience, (formerly known as Hartlepool Historic Quay) brings to life the time of Nelson, Napoleon and the Battle of Trafalgar in a superb re-creation of an 18th century seaport. Home to the HMS Trincomalee, Britain’s oldest warship still afloat, this themedattraction offers the opportunity to experience life aboard a real naval frigate, explore the historic quayside, including period shops and houses and chat to experienced tour guides, all wearing authentic period costumes. Entry to Hartlepool Maritime Experience and HMS Trincomalee incurs a small admission charge, however entry to the adjoining Museum of Hartlepool is free for all ages. Here visitors are transported through 5000 years of history from the Bronze Age, to the joining of the Headland and West Hartlepool in 1967, the modern day and the possibilities beyond. It is also home to PSS Wingfield Castle, a wonderfully restored 1930s paddle steamer. The Museum of Hartlepool will be hosting a Pirate Exhibition from March 28 to June 28, with additional arts and craft activities on the opening day. There will also be an Easter trail along the Maritime Experience’s quayside during Easter weekend. For more information visit www.hartlepoolsmaritimeexperience.com or call 01429 860077

REAL LIFE

SAY HI TO GI

LIFE IS SWEET FOR OLIVE From Knight Rider’s KITT, to Marty McFly’s DeLorean and the iconic Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, vamped up vehicles have earned their place in history - and now Darlington has one of its own… It’s not often at Darlington Today that we get to write a profile piece on a character with four wheels rather than two legs, but Olive is rather special. Originally from the United States, this 36 year-old VW Westfalia Berlin Deluxe camper van has found a new home in Darlington with Sweet Campers creators, Graham and Rachael Davies, and is now regularly spotted at weddings, holidays and other events across the North East. Olive is hard to miss thanks to her immaculate, two-tone, white and green paintwork, but her beauty is far more than just skin deep. Powered by a purring two-litre engine, she boasts a plush leather interior, original Westfalia camping cabinets, a small wardrobe and a mini-kitchen complete with sink, cooker and fridge. Since joining Sweet Campers, Olive has accompanied many families on their holidays, providing them with a double rock and roll bed to sleep two adults, as well as a jaw-dropping pop top, with room to comfortably sleep two children. She has also become a firm favourite for weddings across the region, with many couples choosing her as an escort for themselves or their guests. For her party trick, Olive can also transform herself into a retro sweet shop, offering a unique alternative to a candy cart for all manner of social events. For your chance to meet Olive or to book a date in her diary, please contact Sweet Campers on 01325 260208 or visit www.sweetcampers.com. Please note hire charges apply.

WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM MY FRIENDS New friendships are being formed and old ones rediscovered, as a special scheme enters its second, heart-warming year… Since being launched around 15 months ago, the Good Friends scheme supported by Age UK Darlington and the Darlington Partnership, has matched hundreds of volunteers with isolated and vulnerable residents across the town. Together these new friends have enjoyed days out, completed household tasks from gardening to dog walking and ultimately helped to stave off the sense of isolation and vulnerability that can sometimes accompany old age. One of the first to benefit from the scheme was 87 year-old Ernest, who now receives regular visits and lifts around Darlington from his Good Friend, Liz. Shortly after being matched the pair attended a Winter Warmth event at Age UK Darlington, where Ernest had his photo taken for the local paper. As a direct result he was contacted by a former work colleague, with whom he has now reunited after 30 years apart. Ernest is one of almost 500 people currently enrolled on the Good Friends scheme, with all of them reporting feeling more positive and enjoying an improved sense of wellbeing since getting involved. The charity’s 740 volunteers are also feeling the benefits and are encouraging more Good Friends to sign up and help make a difference in the local community. Champions!

Dianne and Angela. Why does Dianne love what she does? ‘The love and support I get from my members is unbelievable. I get so much pleasure watching them lose weight and gain confidence. Quite often members come to class with high blood pressure and high cholesterol, this is often alleviated as their weight decreases and fitness improves. Even though I work 60+ hours a week, I don’t see it as a job but a vocation. We have great fun and see ourselves as a large family sharing in each others joys and sorrows. No other job can beat that!’ Dianne is a rare commodity in her field; educating people on making long term changes to their lives to enable them to live a fit and healthy lifestyle; qualified in Nutrition, Weight Management, and Exercise to Music. She is also trained in High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), Kettleblast (Kettlebells with aerobics), FITSTEPS (Latin and Ballroom for individuals), Fitness Pilates, Salsa, and Personal Fitness. ‘Our classes are different as I know each and every one of my members and they are all made to feel welcome. We have fun, we go on walks, parties, social evenings, model in fashions shows, and the list is endless. Many friendships have formed throughout the classes.’ ‘My members have lost over 650 stone in the last two years but one special member is my best friend Angela Baron. Angela weighed 17st 9lbs when she came to my class on 7th January 2014. At 5’ 2” this was very obese, she had just been advised that she was bordering diabetes type 2 (food related), high blood pressure and high cholesterol. She had also recently been diagnosed with asthma and regularly needed her inhaler. Eleven months down the line she had lost a staggering 6st 7lbs weighing 11st 2lbs, no inhaler, forget about diabetes, blood pressure and cholesterol normal. Core strength unbelievable. If I was asked two years ago, did I think that Angela could do a full plank I would have said no. Angela exercises regularly and has completely changed her lifestyle. In September 2014, she went to her first school reunion (she has always put off in the past due to her weight), she also modelled for M&Co along with 9 other members which shows just how much her confidence has improved. Wow! ‘I am so impressed and proud of her’ says Dianne beaming with pride. Dianne runs courses, bootcamps and workshops throughout the year and with the help of her members has raised thousands for both local and National charities.

Dianne would love to see you at one of her classes. So, if you feel inspired by these two amazing ladies give Dianne a call on 07762 323970 or email Dianne.darville@glow-fit.co.uk Classes held in Darlington, Northalleton, Kirklevington and Ingleby Barwick. If you’re about to embark on a healthy eating regime, or have done so in the past, no doubt you’ll have heard the term GI or Glycaemic Index. But what does it mean and why does it matter? Here’s a handy guide to help you find out…

WHAT IS GI? GI (Glycaemic Index) measures the speed at which carbohydrates are digested and absorbed into the bloodstream. Foods with a low GI rating are slowly absorbed and cause our blood sugar (glucose) to rise gently then fall gradually. Foods with a high GI rating cause a rapid but short term surge in our blood sugar levels, which later drop suddenly, resulting in real hunger cravings.

WHY DO WE NEED THE GLYCAEMIC INDEX? The Glycaemic Index was originally created with the specific purpose of helping diabetics control their insulin levels. It is important to realise that not every food you eat needs to be low GI. The aim is to eat a healthy diet that contains a higher proportion of foods with a low GI rating.

HOW DO YOU RATE THE GLYCAEMIC INDEX? The rate at which the energy from the carbohydrates enters the bloodstream depends on many different factors including the exact type of starch and the method of cooking. Foods are ranked from 1 to 100 with glucose being ranked 100. The ranking depends on the rate at which they are absorbed into the bloodstream and the rate at which our blood sugar levels rise. Generally speaking anything with a GI rating of over 70 is classed as high, a rating between 55 to 69 can be considered medium and under 55 is low. However, the GI may change when combining different foods. For example combining a high GI with a low GI will result in medium GI rating. By keeping your blood sugar levels stable you can improve your sensitivity to the hormone, insulin. Overweight people can be less sensitive to insulin than those of a healthy weight, leading to a potential risk of diabetes and increased risk of heart disease.

WHAT SORT OF FOODS SHOULD I BE EATING? Beans and pulses are low GI and naturally low in calories, however bread varies enormously. Look for loaves made from stone ground flour. You can also find loaves with beta-glucan, normally found in oats, which has been added to bread to lower the GI. Pitta breads and tortilla wraps have a lower GI rating than ordinary loaves. Oats are definitely the forerunner without a doubt. Wholegrain muesli, which hasn’t been overly processed, is another good choice as are bran flakes, All Bran, Bran Buds and Special K. Weetabix is borderline medium. Other good choices are wholemeal pasta or buckwheat and basmati, brown or Camargue red rice.

DARLINGTON’S WHITE ROOM LOOKS TO THE LIGHT The older you get, the more important it is to fight off the ravages of time. The good news is that you no longer have to grow older gracefully - as Bernice Saltzer discovered… On the upper floor of a relatively modest building in Darlington town centre a miracle has occurred. There, in just an hour, I managed to give my weather beaten, sun damaged face a brighter, tighter and healthier look. This is actually a complete lie. I didn’t do it at all, this minor cosmetic miracle was achieved thanks to the amazing team at the town’s The White Room. For the uninitiated, The White Room, at Northumberland Street near Grange Road, is a place where science and beauty meet. Their treatments are not just a matter of slathering your skin with a nice smelling face mask for half an hour - this is serious, cutting edge stuff where stateof-the-art technology is used. I had been offered the chance to try the Fusion SLR - that’s Sonic Laser Rejuvenation to you. It may sound scary but the good news is that is not only pain free (so no nasty needles or stuffing your skin full of chemicals) but it achieves amazing results. The dazzling white surroundings of the aptly named clinic may seem slightly initimidating at first, but the incredibly knowledgeable and friendly staff soon put paid to that. Hopping on the bed, I was talked through every stage of the procedure and told that I’d be able to see results virtually immediately. Although many people do have a one-off boost if they want to get a plumped up look for a special occasion, a course of six is recommended to really get long-lasting results. The treatment starts with a diamond exfoliation to remove dead skin, using a piece of equipment so sensitive that it can actually be used under the eyes and on the eyelids themselves. Once that was completed the exciting stuff began - the hyaluronic infusion. Apparently we all have hyaluronic acid in our skin, it’s the stuff that gives it a plump, fresh appearance in our youth.

From our 20s this starts to diminish so a special serum is applied using acoustic wave technology to help it permeate deep into the skin and as part of the process to recapture that long gone glow. Apart from a slight buzzing noise this is quite relaxing and is then followed by low level laser light therapy which apparently produces a lifting and tightening effect. An hour soon passed and I jumped off the bed, anxious to see the results - and was astounded. My face looked years younger, felt tighter and had a real brightness. And that wasn’t all - apparently the technique will actually help to improve the production of collagen so I should see my skin continue to look better over the next six to eight weeks. The White Room offers a whole range of treatments aimed at getting real results, from using lasers to treat problem skins to body sculpturing. As for me, I’m off to buy a bottle of wine to celebrate - hoping that I’ll look so young they will insist on ID to check my age….. HI HO, HI HO… IT’S ON TO ICE WE GO One of the world’s best-loved fairy tales is being given a sparkling make-over and gliding into the North East later this spring. We strapped on our skates to find out more… With skin as white as snow, lips as red as blood and hair as black as ebony, Snow White is one of the most iconic characters in modern literature.

Originally developed by the Brothers Grimm, she was given the Disney treatment in 1937 and has since appeared in dozens of adaptations, including the recent blockbuster, Snow White and the Huntsman. Now, the popular princess and her dashing prince are heading back to the North East in a stunningly choreographed interpretation by the Russian Ice Stars. The company, led by producer Vee Deplidge, pioneered the concept of theatre on ice by creating full length, ballet-based productions to fit smaller, non-arena stages throughout the world. Their ability to transport audiences into a magical winter wonderland, while they sat comfortably in their warm theatre seats, led to a personal request from Prince Rainier of Monaco to perform Cinderella at the 50th anniversary of his reign and to subsequently perform for him every year until his death. “While watching an ice show in 1991, I was struck with the thought that marrying danger and speed with the beauty of ballet could be totally spectacular,” said Vee. “I had always loved theatre and thought that transferring it onto ice would allow a whole new range of movement, while giving a much broader appeal to the traditional interpretation of popular stories.” For their latest production, Snow White on Ice, the Russian Ice Stars will take their audience on the most magical journey yet, with a combination of ballet, gymnastics and aerial

acrobatics helping to bring the story to life like never before. Along with all the familiar elements, including an enchanted mirror and deceptively delicious-looking red apple, this mesmerising show will also feature a few surprises, including a special appearance by television personality, Rustie Lee. “What makes Snow White on Ice so different though, is the quality of the skaters” said Vee. “The Russian Ice Stars include more former World, European and Olympic competitors than any other theatrical ice show and the end result is truly magnificent.” Snow White on Ice will be performed at the Forum Theatre, Billingham from Wednesday April 22 until Sunday April 26. Tickets, priced at £15 for children, £25 for adults and £60 for a family of four are available now by calling 01642 552663 or visiting www.forumtheatrebillingham.co.uk More information about the production and its international cast, can also be found at www.russianicestars.com Darlington Today | 21

new spring menus just launched AIN’T NOTHING BUT A HOUNDGATE With growing competition and increasing expectations, luxury hotels across the UK are under constant pressure to stay ahead of the pack. For Darlington’s Houndgate Townhouse, it’s all in the detail, as our writer Claire Buchan discovered… Since opening its doors almost two years ago, Houndgate Townhouse has served as a ‘home away from home’ for discerning Darlington residents and overnight guests from across the UK. But, no matter how many times you drop by to stay, drink or dine, there’s always something new to discover in the hotel and eatery’s intricate design. “The renovation and interior of Houndgate were conceived with local skills and craftspeople firmly in mind,” explained Director, Natalie Cooper. “Everything from the room key fobs to the rare breed shorthorn cow cabinet in the restaurant were crafted to pay homage to the heritage of this building and the surrounding town so it is lovely when guests start spotting them and understanding what they mean.” Originally dating back to the 18th century, 11 Houndgate has served many purposes over the years, from a family home and boarding school to a private library and, latterly, the town’s Registrar’s Office. Now operating as an eight-bedroom boutique hotel, the Georgian Townhouse has been more than restored to its former glory, with a mix of subtle and obvious references to its history and that of 22 | Darlington Today

Darlington as a whole. Among the most obvious are the Shorthorn cabinet, made specifically for the property by Barnard Castle-based furniture makers Anthony Nixon and the blue knitted wool stool by Irish textile designer Claire Anne O’Brien, which both reference the borough’s coat of arms, found at park entrances and on railway bridges around the town centre. Another eye-catching tribute comes in the form of a specially commissioned chandelier, with a hand-blown glass shade and 2.5m long tassles that have been dyed to represent the zig zag at the top of the funnel on the Locomotion. It could take years for a visitor like me to notice all of these carefully crafted design features, including the privacy twines on the doorknobs reminding us of Darlington’s wool industry, but the hotel’s dedication to supporting the town in which it stands is far easier to spot (and taste). “As a young hotel our ambition is to be at the heart of the local community and we are always on the lookout for ways to make a positive contribution,” said Natalie. “This includes adhering to all green building regulations, putting recycling

systems in place, enlisting a green energy supplier and serving up more considered options from our kitchen. “The majority of our food, including breads and cakes, is made from scratch on the premises, with local suppliers providing most of the ingredients to help cut the time from origin to plate.” These principles of utilising locally sourced and seasonal produce are reflected in Darlington Townhouse’s new spring/summer menus, where dishes such as Crispy Pork Belly with Braised Cabbage and a Lamb and Mint Burger in a homemade Harissa Bun take pride of place. “At Houndgate our primary goal is to create a relaxed and welcoming environment for all our guests, right in the heart of Darlington,” said Natalie. “Since launching in 2013 we have been committed to making a positive contribution to our town and the surrounding area and plan to continue that commitment for many years to come.” For more information about Houndgate Townhouse visit www.houndgatetownhouse.co.uk or call 01325 486011
