HIGH PRAISE INDEED A college’s star performers have been praised in a prestigious awards scheme.

SAY CHEESE…. A dental practice has plenty to smile about after being awarded one of the most prestigious accreditations in the industry. Middleton-St-George (MSG) Dental Practice, based at Middleton Lane, won Patient Choice Whitening Case at the recent UK Aesthetic Dentistry Awards in London.

Carmel College students Liam White and Robyn Errington-Coates were highly commended by Education Secretary Nicky Morgan after being named runners-up in the annual Lord Glenamara Memorial Prize. The scheme, set up in memory of another former Education Secretary in 2012, is designed to recognise the outstanding contribution of pupils from the North East to their school and local communities.

CHARITY SKYDIVER

Olivia Tarn

An Aycliffe Village teenager is choosing to spend her 16th birthday, on 23rd May, skydiving for charity. Olivia Tarn, who attends Woodham Academy, is hoping to raise a tidy sum for each of the two charities she is supporting. These are Winston’s Wish, a charity that supports bereaved children, and Young Minds - a voice for young people’s mental health and wellbeing. When Olivia was six years old, her daddy died in a road traffic accident. Winston’s Wishes were involved in family sessions with Olivia and her younger sister. These were very helpful in allowing Olivia to come to terms with her grief. Olivia has great empathy with this charity.

TAKING THE LEAD Britain’s Got Talent winners, Ashleigh and Pudsey, will take to the stage in Darlington Civic Theatre’s annual pantomime. The duo, described by Simon Cowell as “one of my favourite acts ever,” have been in high demand since appearing on the ITV show and have even released a book and film.

Olivia is also aware of the pressures that are upon young people at present, so fully supports Young Minds and all the work they do. Olivia would appreciate all sponsorship. If you would like to donate to these charities please contact www.justgiving.com/olivia-tarn (for Young Minds Trust) or www.justgiving.com/olivia-tarn1 (for Winston’s Wish).

Ashleigh and Pudsey

Good luck Olivia! What an amazing thing to do on your birthday!

They will star in family extravaganza, Cinderella, which runs in Darlington from December 2015 to 10 January 2016. For tickets call 01325 486555 or visit darlingtoncivic.co.uk

Jade with Dr Murad

CALIFORNIA GIRL Guests at Rockliffe Hall’s spa could soon be benefitting from enhanced expertise and new, California-style treatments. Jade Mitchell, a therapist at the Hurthworth-based venue, has just returned from a fact-finding visit to Los Angles, where she met one of the world’s most respected dermatologists, Dr Geoff Murad. Dr Murad, who is renowned for his pioneering work into skin conditions such as acne, stress and ageing, has a range of products which are sold worldwide and Rockliffe Hall is one of only a few Murad specialist spas in the UK.

FIVE YEARS OF FUNDRAISING Fundraising is proving to be a piece of cake for one Darlington school, as it continues five years of hard work in support of communities across Uganda. As part of its most recent efforts, staff and students at St Aidan’s Academy held a bake sale to raise funds for residents of Kalule in the country’s Luweero District, including a family of asylum seekers who were given a temporary home in Darlington but later deported. The academy has also donated a sewing machine to help the townspeople make and mend their clothes.

Redhall Tigers FC

LAST BUT NOT LEAST A struggling Sunday league side has secured a lucrative sponsorship deal after being named one of the worst football teams in the country. Redhall Tigers FC, who are on a minus 68 goal difference at the bottom of the Darlington Sunday Invitation League, battled failing football teams from across the UK in the Flaming Failures competition. They beat Gwent team, Scouting for Goals, in the final and will now receive £1000 worth of sponsorship from leisure firm, Flaming Grill, which defender Stewart Burton says has “given the team massive confidence to go forward into next season.”

HIT FOR SIX Darlington Building Society is still out to bat in support of one of the world’s oldest cricket competitions.

SCORING SUCCESS A Darlington side is ahead of the scrum when it comes to supporting the local community.

For the past 25 years the society has been the major sponsor of the North Yorkshire & South Durham ECB Premier League, which was founded in 1892.

Mowden Park RFC, which moved to The Northern Echo Arena in 2012, has worked with more than 60 schools over the past five years and organised a range of activities attended by more than 50,000 people.

A number of events are now being planned to celebrate the landmark anniversary, including the induction of 25 new NYSDC Hall of Famers.

This includes multi-sports, health and wellbeing programs and initiatives to promote social inclusion and cohesion.

ANSWERING THE CALL Kind-hearted call centre workers have embarked on a fundraising campaign in aid of St Teresa’s Hospice. Staff members at EE have already donated 15 hi-tech tablets to the charity, allowing staff and patients better access to the Internet. Now, apprentices from the firm are planning a series of fundraising events, including race nights, pop-up clothing shops and raffles to help the hospice continue its vital work. BACK FOR SECOND HELPINGS…

SAT 9 & SUN 10 MAY

6 | Darlington Today

darlofoodfest.org s@darlofoodfest

Last year Distinct Darlington, the town’s Business Improvement District, served up its very first food festival - a magnificent event which went down a treat. And the good news is that second helpings will be on offer when Distinctly Delicious Darlington returns this month. Over the weekend of May 9 - 10 visitors to the town can tuck into a feast of mouth watering activities and events, culminating in a much-anticipated repeat of last year’s spectacular highlight - the Locomotion Cake Parade. Groups can choose a theme linked to Darlington’s rich past or exciting present day and then be inspired to decorate one of 32 giant cakes, made by Clervaux bakery. All the finished cakes will form a grand parade through the town, transported on special ‘carriages’ to celebrate Darlington’s famous link to the creation of the railways. The popularity of the street food stalls and the market was such last year that it’s back bigger and better than ever before, with more than 35 producers plying their wares across the two days. And if anyone wants to find out more about products or even try some samples throughout the weekend, there will be a focus every half hour on one particular stall holder.

There’ll be live entertainment throughout the weekend with the ever-popular Granny Turismo and their fantastic shopping trolleys appearing on Saturday and The Red Hot Dinners, a delicious musical combo, doing their stuff on Sunday. A number of top chefs will also be demonstrating in the new dome marquee in the town centre, including those from the Houndgate Townhouse Hotel, the Carriages Restaurant at the Mercure Darlington King’s Hotel, Clervaux Bakery and the multi-award winning Rockliffe Hall. “We had such a massive response to last year that we’re delighted to have brought Distinctly Delicious back again,” said Alex Hirst, Manager at Darlington BID. “We’ve got a brilliant programme of events and lots of opportunities for people to get involved over what will be a jam-packed weekend.” Traders will also be in line for the Distinctly Delicious Awards, which will be presented to producers of judges’ top ten favourite foods at the festival market.

“For example it could pay tribute to the town’s engineering history and the fact that bridges created here have ended up as far away as on the River Nile or the Amazon.

Community groups, friends, families, schools and colleagues can all take part in the Locomotion Cake Parade and decorate a cake which will be included in the parade which sets off from the Pease Monument on Sunday May 10 at 2.30pm.

“Darlington was the first town in the country to carry out same sex civil ceremonies so there are a diverse range of events which have happened which can be celebrated.”

“Our theme this year is special events which have happened in Darlington over the decades and we’ve got some options that people can choose from or they can come up with their own,” said Alex.

Groups can book in advance to decorate a cake or - subject to availability - they will be available in the special domed marquee throughout the weekend.

SPOTLIGHT ON STAGECOACH Young people from across County Durham are now setting the stage for a brighter future. We sent writer, Claire Buchan, to Stagecoach Darlington to find out more...

“I witnessed first-hand what a huge difference this made to the students, with one girl even increasing her reading age by four years because she was so determined to read the script.

As a member of an amateur dramatics society, I’ve witnessed at first-hand how performing arts can help bring even the shyest of students out of their shell.

“I knew that we’d never be able to recreate this experience in a school environment, so I applied for a franchise with Stagecoach and have never looked back.”

But the work being undertaken at Stagecoach Theatre Arts in Darlington goes far beyond simple confidence building.

With more than 600 franchised schools across the UK, Stagecoach Theatre Arts is the largest network of part-time performing arts training schools in the country.

Here the power of the drama, music and dance is being harnessed to help young people develop a range of essential life skills, which will benefit them socially and in future employment. Principal Trudy Hindmarsh, who introduced Stagecoach to Darlington in 1998, spent many years working in education. Having initially taught English in sixth form, she later became an infant teacher, before launching her first Stagecoach franchise in Yarm in 1997. “I was becoming disheartened with the education system,” she said. “I found that the structured curriculum and introduction of SATS was limiting the students’ ability to work on their own initiative and embrace their creative side. “Eventually I got involved in a school project, which saw a show I had written being staged at Billingham Forum Theatre.

The Darlington branch, based at Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College, caters for ages two to 18, with some courses starting from as little as 40 minutes per week. There are also additional, short-term workshops available during school holidays. “There are many stereotypes surrounding stage schools,” said Trudy, “but we don’t really fit in to any of those. “Sure, we teach students the art of singing, drama and dance, but there are no pushy parents or competing for prominence and it’s not just about performing.” While some former Stagecoach students, including Billy Elliott actor, Jamie Bell and Pop Idol finalist, Zoe Birkett, have pursued careers in the spotlight, many others have found success in unrelated fields, as well as further education - and Trudy is extremely proud of them all.

“A fundamental part of our training, is teaching students of any age how to build confidence, work as part of a team and develop leadership skills that will help them to thrive in later life,” she said. “Even our youngest students are encouraged to develop a level of independence from the outset. And our methods of behavioral intervention, designed to limit tantrums, anxiety and even the effects of ADHD, are currently the subject of a study by Teesside University, which we hope will see them held up as examples of best practice.” For more information about Stagecoach Darlington, including a full list of term dates and activities, visit www.stagecoach.co.uk/darlington or call Trudy on 01325 337667 Darlington Today | 11

SUNSHINE STAPLES Spend summer in style with these top fashion tips… Holiday season is the ideal time to brighten up your wardrobe and experiment with the cut, colour and style of whatever you wear. If you’re heading for one of the UK’s top festivals then be sure to pack plenty of vibrant and practical accessories. A large hat and signature sunglasses will protect you from the sun and help you stand out from the crowd, while wellies will keep you mud free all weekend long. Opt, too, for striking swimwear. Florals and animal prints look great on the beach or by the pool, with a colourful kaftan, funky flip flops and oversized bag completing the look once you step inside. Remember, though, glowing, healthy skin is your best accessory, so stay safe and use plenty of sunscreen. With temperatures rising, comfort is of the utmost importance and lighter fabrics such as linen and cotton will help men stay calm and cool, especially for a more formal, suited event. For summer weddings or days at the races, women should also stick to lighter colours and eye-catching, seasonal prints. Maxi dresses are ideal for adding an air of sophistication, especially when paired with nude or gold shoes. Accessorise with a fascinator where appropriate and remember to take a wrap, shawl or light jacket in case it gets cold. If you’re keeping it casual, then cutoff jeans or tailored shorts are ideal for all manner of get-togethers and family days out. Team with a flowing top or fitted t-shirt and you’re ready to take on a rollercoaster, tuck into an ice cream or tackle whatever else the summer has in store.

LAUGHING ALL THE WAY TO THE THEATRE Stalwarts of British comedy and music are joining forces for a special summer show at Darlington Civic Theatre. We caught up with legendary entertainer, Jasper Carrott, to find out more… For more than 40 side-splitting years, Jasper Carrott has been a familiar face on stages and television screens across the UK. His varied career, which began at the Boggery Folk Club, Birmingham in 1969, has earned him multiple awards and incorporated everything from musical theatre to sitcoms and game shows. Now, the funny man is returning to his roots, with a unique stand-up comedy tour that hits Darlington Civic Theatre on Tuesday June 2. “I’ve performed in the North East several times but never at this particular venue,” said Jasper. “I do have family in the area though and they’ll be coming to the show, so at least one section of the audience will be laughing.” Jasper, who ended a 15 year break for touring in 2014, will be sharing the stage with one of his best friends, renowned musician and ELO drummer, Bev Bevan. “Bev and I have known each other for more than 60 years,” he said. “We decided to tour together last year and had so much fun that we couldn’t resist doing it again. “We made a conscious decision to visit venues like Darlington Civic Theatre, rather than larger arenas, so that we could get eye to eye with the audience and really feed off their reaction. It’s been going well so far.” The new show, aptly-entitled Stand Up and Rock, offers audiences the chance to enjoy Jasper’s style of classic live comedy, as well as music from the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s, as performed by The Bev Bevan Band and special guests, former Rockin’ Berries lead singer, Geoff Turton and Quills front woman, Joy. “This is an opportunity for people to experience music that isn’t always heard

live anymore,” said Jasper. “For my part, it also marks a return to a traditional take on comedy, where laughter isn’t generated by the use of expletives or shock tactics, something I know many audiences really appreciate.” Jasper, who plans to join the band on stage for several numbers, was awarded an OBE for charity work in 2003 and continues to give up much of his time to worthy causes across his native Midlands. “I find charity work extremely enjoyable,” he said. “It’s been a huge part of my life and it’s nice to be able to give something back. “It’s terrific to be back on the road though. Comedy is a dangerous game and carries a lot of apprehension but it’s that fear that gives you the edge and, for me, this tour feels like being reborn.” Tickets for Stand Up and Rock with Jasper Carrott and The Bev Bevan Band are priced from £24 each. For more information, or to book, call the Darlington Civic Box Office on 01325 486555 or visit www.darlingtoncivic.co.uk

WIN We’ve got a pair of tickets for Stand Up and Rock to give away to one lucky reader. For your chance to win simply answer the following question: Jasper Carrott was awarded an OBE in which year? Send your answer, along with your name, address and telephone number to the address on page 25 by 26 May and the first correct answer drawn at random will win.

I was born covered in butter: now I am Glowing My mother had craved butter all through her pregnancy and ate it by the bucketful. Perhaps this was an omen and the start of my weight problem. Bread covered in butter was a staple part of growing up right from childhood through to adulthood, toast for breakfast, bread and butter at lunchtime and again at tea-time. You would think I would have hated it but no! I craved it and my habit didn’t change even when I left home. Despite being very active I had a weight problem. In my 30’s I lost 6 and half stone doing the Rosemary Conley Diet at home, but despite all my best efforts, I had no motivation or support and my old habits kicked back in with my weight gradually increasing. By the age of 51 I was now in the menopause and had an underactive thyroid. This was a great excuse for my weight gain but I was only fooling myself. Twelve years later still overweight, I was diagnosed with a hiatus hernia and had to do something about my weight to remove the pressure from the hernia. On the 17th June 2013 I found Dianne Darville. I walked into her class to be confronted by a bubbly, non judgemental lady who was full of enthusiasm. The class was so welcoming and the other members of the group were so friendly I felt straight at home and knew this was for me. Information and advice on nutrition and fitness was given to start my journey. I am really enjoying the whole process and the pounds just keep falling

off at a rate of one or two per week. Even though I am still on my journey, to date, I have lost just under 5 stone. I believe exercise has played a major role in helping me to lose so much weight and not only that but I am toning too. I started off attending one class per week but love it so much that I now do two aerobic classes and one Fitness Pilates class. Dianne also runs bootcamps, HIIT and Kettlebells which I attend when the courses are on. Nothing is too difficult as you work to your own level and Dianne will give an alternative exercise if there is one which you can’t do. Having a fully qualified instructor is a great way to help you change and maintain your healthy lifestyle. Going to Glow was the best thing I did. All the class members help you stay motivated as they support and encourage you and you can guarantee to laugh. I am not going to pretend that it has been easy, but it hasn’t been difficult either thanks to Glow. Sometimes I have bad weeks but Dianne just says that I have ‘had a rest’ and it is time to get started again. Staying positive is the only way to do it and if I didn’t go to class I am not sure that I could remain so. I have just paid for an annual subscription to ensure that I do stay on track.

WIN a book, sweatshirt & £75 worth of classes Attending Coach Dianne’s class is always fun. Today it was band work and Polly, Timmy, Pablo and Becca were going to do the sumo exercise. Timmy asked Coach ‘Why is it called the sumo?’ Coach Dianne replied ‘Because I said so!’ We don’t argue with the Coach. Coach Dianne asked class members to stand with their feet hip distance apart and to tie the band just above the knee joint but not on the knee joint. The exercise is performed by slightly bending the knees with the hands on the thighs, keeping the back straight and lifting the right leg wide and placing it on the floor into a squat. This is repeated on the left leg. In most of Coach Dianne’s classes this is performed perfectly, but not in this one. Just look at Timmy, how does he do it? He is twisted again.’ Poor Timmy!

All you need to do is complete the puzzle using the words below and the remaining letters will spell a phrase associated with Glow. Email all answers to dianne.darville@glow-fit.co.uk. The lucky winner will receive a copy of The Food Doctor ‘Eat better forever’ book, a Glow sweatshirt and five consecutive Weight Management and Fitness classes to the total value £75. The long summer holidays in particular can be quite daunting for working parents trying to juggle childcare arrangements with grandparents, annual leave and days spent at friend’s houses. We understand the predicament which many parents face, therefore at Red House School we keep our doors open and provide a stimulating and exciting Holiday Club to children that attend the Nursery & Infant School. Our Holiday Club offers a diverse and ever-changing range of activities, from art and craft projects, baking, outdoor games, gardening, role play and local visits. Parents are happy in the knowledge that their child is in an environment that is familiar, with a variety of fun activities taking place every day. Due to the success of the Holiday Club we have recently extended the number of days which we are open, resulting in the Nursery & Infant School being open for 50 weeks of the year.

HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW? Whether you’re green fingered or a gardening novice, make more of your outside space with these easy to implement ideas…

Keep it colourful: Bright blooms are the easiest way to make an instant impact. Choose two or three signature colours and plant them in large groups to create a bold display or mix contrasting hues to add depth and diversity. Just remember to check if the flowers you’ve fallen for will flourish alongside one another and within your garden’s light, soil and weather conditions. Reach for the sky: Gardens can be spectacular when they go above ground level. Try adding height to your outside space by introducing trees, shrubs, raised beds or flower pots, which will entice the eye skywards and make even the smallest of spaces multidimensional. Climbers such as jasmine and honeysuckle, also offer a decorative way to disguise unsightly fencing or unwanted views and create an added sense of seclusion in built up areas.

Grow your own: If you literally want to get more from your garden, then why not plant a small herb or vegetable patch? This could help you to save money and become more selfsufficient, while also offering you direct access to fresh and tasty ingredients for a host of summertime dishes. Space to sit: While flowers and foliage make your garden look beautiful, it’s family and friends that really bring it to life. Make sure there’s room for them to relax by setting aside space for outdoor furniture or a picnic blanket. Patios and decking are ideal but even a small grassed area will suffice if space is limited.

Welcome wildlife: Do your bit for nature by planting pollen and nectar rich plants to encourage bees, putting

up bird baths and feeders for our feathered friends and even putting out small amounts of cat or dog food for your friendly neighbourhood hedgehog. Let there be light: Make the most of those long, summer nights by installing outdoor lighting that will keep your garden looking its best, even after the sun has set. Electric or candle lanterns are particularly popular, while fairy lights wound around key features and trees are especially magical. Solar lights are probably the most cost effective option but, whichever you choose, just make sure they’re specifically designed for outdoor use and won’t suffer in the damp weather. Wow with water: If you don’t have the space, or budget, for a pool, pond or hot tub, then a simple water feature can have a remarkably tranquil effect. Just imagine sitting back in your deckchair, listening to the gentle, rippling sound, reminiscent of a babbling countryside brook or soft ocean waves - bliss! Small surprises: Even the smallest of yards can become a mid-town oasis with a little creativity. Try using fragrant flowers in vibrant, easy to move pots and paint any unsightly surfaces in light, bright colours to give a sense of space. Take care: Once you’ve made a start on your garden it’s important to keep up the tender, loving care. Use gardening books or the internet for advice on when things should be pruned and planted and remember to feed and water your garden, to ensure it continues to bloom.
