CULTURAL BEACON TO SHINE EVEN BRIGHTER Darlington Civic Theatre could be returned to its former glory if funding is secured for a major restoration scheme. Space Architects have drawn up plans for the creation of a new 45,000 sq ft cultural complex in between Parkgate and Borough Road, which would combine the Civic with young people’s theatre company, Theatre Hullabaloo.
At the time of going to press a bid had been submitted for a £5m Heritage Lottery Fund Grant to help cover the cost of the project, which, would also include a gallery, cafes and a state-ofthe-art education suite. If successful the new building could open in 2017.

A SPORTING CHANCE There were several reasons to celebrate at Carmel College’s annual sports day, with one athlete returning to triumph and another running a record-breaking race. Adam Brown, 14, who holds the county record for shot put, won his first competitive race since having his appendix removed earlier this year and is now setting his sights on one day competing in the Olympic Games. And 12-year-old Joshua Irving stormed the junior boys 300m race, knocking 3.6 seconds off the college record, which had stood unbeaten for two years.

SINGER URGES INTERNET CAUTION
Plans have been submitted to transform the west end of Darlington into ‘a green and pleasant land.’
A singer/songwriter, who has worked with stars including Jessie J, has been warning young people about the dark side of the internet.
In the past few years Oliver Greenwood, who is originally from London, has completed an adult literacy course, re-sat his science GCSE and graduated with a diploma in IT systems, support and networking.
The proposals, drawn up by Niven Architects on behalf of developer Bussey and Armstrong, include the creation of wildlife areas, such as walks, cycle paths and wetlands, as well as sculptures and art installations in West Park Garden Village.
Rich Cottell, who sold 5000 copies of his debut EP, met with students at Darlington School of Mathematics and Science to share his experiences of cyber bullying, including how a family member was driven to self-harm by the abuse she received online.
He has now been named as the new ICT Curriculum Resource Support Officer at Darlington’s Abbey Fields School, where he will be in charge of more than 40 computers and three servers.
If given the go ahead work would start in 2016, with 1,200 houses, a nursery, junior and secondary school and a medical centre also being built in the next 10 years.
He urged the group to set their social media accounts to private, block the people who target them and report any offending posts to a responsible adult.
STAR STUDENTS Star Radio has teamed up with Darlington College to help students gain work experience while working towards their qualifications. Those enrolled in the new Star Academy of Broadcasting and Digital Journalism will have the opportunity to work at the radio station every Friday, helping to create news stories, write press releases and produce on-air shows. They will also receive in-classroom training from industry professionals and have access to the latest video and radio facilities.

BE BESIDE THE SEASIDE – IN DARLINGTON THIS SUMMER… FAMILIES can once again enjoy a traditional beach break this summer – right at the heart of Darlington.
For the third year running, business improvement company Distinct Darlington is turning the town’s Market Square into an urban beach, with fun and games for visitors of all ages. Darlington by the Sea, which will take place between Thursday 23 July and Thursday 6 August, offers the chance to take part in creative workshops, watch live entertainment and enjoy a number of nautically themed activities. At the heart of the action will be a sandy ‘beach,’ complete with deckchairs, and traditional seaside entertainment, in the form of Punch and Judy shows, will take place on 27 and 30 July and 3 and 6 August. There will also be street theatre, from All at Sea, on Saturday 25 July and the Giant Seagulls on Saturday 1 August and the chance to take part in arts and crafts activities, with Scrap Studio, on Wednesdays 29 July and 5 August.

Pint-sized pirates will be able to search for doubloons in a treasure hunt throughout the town centre, while fairground stalls and ice cream vans will be making regular appearances at the Market Square. The outdoor cinema is also set to return on Fridays 24 and 31 July, with three big screen favourites for the whole family. “Our urban beach has become a highlight of the summer for families and businesses alike,” said Alex Hirst, manager of Distinct Darlington, which was formed to promote business and encourage a clean, safe and welcoming town centre. “It offers great fun and entertainment for all ages and really puts a spring in everyone’s step. “
A garden that looks set to become one of the region’s leading tourist attractions is set to open to the public. We visited The Walled Garden at Wynyard Hall to find out what’s in store…. When work began on the Walled Garden at Wynyard Hall almost a year ago, it was, in effect, a secret garden, having lain closed for decades. However, now, after years of planning and months of hard work, the Walled Garden at Wynyard Hall – the second phase of an ambitious The Gardens project – is finished and ready to open its doors to the public. The man in charge of converting Sir John’s dream into reality is multi RHS award-winning landscape architect Alistair Baldwin.

THE GARDENS AT WYNYARD HALL
Perhaps the first impression visitors will get will be of colour; a dazzling array of roses planted in great
swathes, in shades ranging from the softest whites to the deepest crimsons. Then, when they enter the garden and begin to explore, they will be able to see each rose, each plant and shrub from a new angle, thanks to a series of gently sloping – and wholly accessible pathways.
The visitor centre At the gateway to The Gardens is a visitor centre, showcasing the finest goods and produce the region has to offer. Open daily from 10am till 5pm, it is a great venue in which to meet up with friends or enjoy some precious ‘me’ time, whether or not you choose to visit the gardens. Everyone is welcome and there is no admission charge. Tickets for the gardens can be purchased here and male, female, disabled and baby changing toilets are available.
The café At the heart of the visitor centre, the café is the ideal place in which to enjoy a delicious selection of homemade dishes and snacks while enjoying superb views of The Gardens. Choose from a hot dish of the day, hot and cold sandwiches and delicious cakes and pastries with a range of hot and cold beverages, all prepared and cooked by Wynyard Hall’s in-house chefs using locallysourced ingredients where possible. The café is open throughout the day and is fully licensed, so visitors can enjoy a chilled glass of wine or beer with lunch.
The farm shop The visitor centre is also home to a farm shop, selling everything from newly laid
farm eggs and freshly baked bread to delicious pasta sauces, pâtés and relishes. It really is a food lover’s paradise – but that’s not all…. It will also be stocked with a range of gifts, books and stationary, so you can take home a lasting reminder of your visit or choose a special treat for a friend.
Plant sales A fantastic range of plants will be on sale, including many of the varieties of rose on show in the garden, supplied by UK rose expert, David Austin. There will also be an extensive selection of seasonal plants and flowers on sale throughout the year. From bedding plants to Christmas trees there will be something to suit every garden, big or small. Darlington Today | 9

sports bra? If so, does it fit? A good sports bra is an essential piece of kit. It is important to wear one that fits you snuggly and gives adequate support for the exercises being performed.
• Your bra should fit snuggly under the bust without being uncomfortably tight.
Breasts are only held in place by the skin around them and the Coopers Ligaments there are no muscles in boobs. When the bust moves, these ligaments stretch and can result in a permanent droop of the bust. No amount of exercise will return them to their original shape.
• The shoulder straps should not dig in (for larger busts wider straps are more comfortable).
Your boobs can bounce up to 9cm* when unsupported during exercise! Tests showed that breast movement is reduced by 38% when wearing an ordinary bra but this reduction rises to as much as 74% with a Shock Absorber sports bra It could explain why over 50% of women experience breast pain when exercising and it makes many women avoid certain activities that could be enjoyed with a good sports bra!
• Bras should be replaced every 30 to 40 washes basically when it becomes comfortable and easy to get on and off it is time to change it.
73% of women who exercise regularly are not wearing a sports bra? Do you wear a
• All of your bust should fit in the bra without any bulges around the sides.
• When you perform the activity the bra contains the movement and there should be significantly less bounce than with a normal bra.
• Go for a more adjustable style to maximize the use you can get from the bra. Sports bras have come on a long way since two jock straps were tied together to offer ladies support! So give your bust a chance! Don’t end up like Polly!

SATURDAY NIGHT STEAK-AWAY
TO DARLINgTON AND BEYOND
A recently refurbished restaurant is ‘steak-ing’ a claim to Saturday nights we sent Claire Buchan along to find out more... After benefiting from a modern makeover, the Holiday Inn Darlington North is now focussing on revitalising its restaurant and making it a go-to destination for diners in the surrounding area. Along with the introduction of artwork paying homage to Darlington’s railway heritage, this includes new, localised menus for Sunday Lunch and the start of a Saturday Grill Night, designed by the staff themselves. We visited shortly after the weekly grill was launched and already it seemed that this hidden gem - just off junction 59 of the A1 was receiving recognition. The informal eatery, which is flooded with natural light, was bustling with people enjoying gammon, steak or chicken, all served with tomato, button mushrooms, chips or jacket potato and the diner’s choice of sauce. I opted for the 8oz gammon, topped with a fried egg and a jug of rich, thick gravy, while my boyfriend tucked into a succulent 8oz steak with a tangy, BBQ sauce. Both were perfectly cooked and satisfyingly portioned - though we couldn’t resist adding sides
of onion rings, garlic bread and coleslaw (priced from £1.50 each) to really make the most of our meal.
Bringing fairytale characters to life may sound like a childhood dream, but for two Darlington mums it’s become big business…
The grill night meal deal, which incorporates two main courses, also includes a carafe of wine. Our choice, Sauvignon Blanc, was delivered quickly after ordering, allowing us to enjoy a refreshing glass while our food was being cooked. Despite our mammoth main courses we were still tempted by a tasty dessert. My Summer Strawberry Tart (£5.95) was deliciously sweet, with just the right amount of pastry and a handy jug of cream served on the side. My boyfriend’s cheeseboard (£6.95) beautifully presented on a black slate - was equally generous, with ample slices of brie, cheddar and stilton, a selection of crackers and a refreshing accompaniment of apple, grapes and celery. As we left the Holiday Inn, the restaurant’s attentive yet unobtrusive staff were setting up for the next day’s breakfast and I couldn’t help but wish we were staying to sample that too.

When your day job involves tracking down Tinkerbell, checking Cinderella’s ballgown and auditioning for Iron Man, it’s hardly what you’d call a typical nine to five. But, for Melissa Brunskill and Charlene Small, this foray into the world of superheroes and princesses has opened up an enchanted kingdom of hospital visits, publicity stunts and children’s parties that has left them in demand around the region. Their company, Meet My Mascot, provides costumed characters for a wide range of private and corporate events, with bookings being taken from as far afield as York and Barnard Castle. “We launched Meet My Mascot in January 2014,” said Mel “and were initially expecting to run it part time as a way to boost our income at weekends. Now it’s grown into a full time job for both Charlene and I and we just can’t believe how far we’ve come.” After starting out with just two costumes – a Ninja Turtle and a kitten – Meet My Mascot can now “bring to life” more than 50 popular
characters, with new costumes being added on a regular basis. “Princesses and superheroes are by far the most requested characters,” said Mel, “but we always have to stay up to date with what is popular and try to add them to our roster wherever we can. Luckily both Mel and I have children of our own so we tend to know what young people are in to.” Meet My Mascot employs a team of 15 performers to portray everyone from Alice in Wonderland to Buzz Lightyear, with many of the young team studying drama or musical theatre. “Entertaining babies and children up to nine years old is a great way for the students to gain practical experience of capturing an audience and staying in character,” said Mel. “It’s not the easiest job in the world but who wouldn’t want the chance to bring these legends to life?” Mum of one Mel gave up her own babywear shop to run Meet My Mascot, while business partner Charlene is balancing her commitments with being a stay at home mum
to three children, including a new born. This hard work and dedication is already paying off, with the company recently making it to the final five of a national award. “The other finalists in the What’s On 4 Juniors 2015 Best Children’s Entertainment Company category were all from big cities,” said Mel, “so it was amazing for us just to be included. The fact that these awards were voted for by the public made it even more special and we’re absolutely overwhelmed by all the support.” As well as catering for private parties, Meet My Mascot also runs its own events throughout the year. Next on the agenda is a villainthemed Halloween bash and a colourful Christmas celebration, full details of which are still to be announced. “Watch this space,” said Mel, “there’s a lot more to come.” For more information visit www.meetmymascot.com search Meet My Mascot on Facebook or call the company on 07805 683920 Darlington Today | 13

Forensic mind reader Colin Cloud is a new breed of entertainer, who uses scientific techniques and keen powers of observation to connect with audiences and – seemingly – read their thoughts. “I’m not a psychic and I’ve never claimed to be,” he said. “But I do have a unique skill set that allows me to connect with people on a deeper level and reveal things that haven’t been spoken out loud.

“In previous shows this has included everything from what the audience member had for lunch, to the car they drive and even their PIN number, though I never reveal anything too personal or sensitive.” Colin’s unique talents, developed during studies in forensic investigation and criminal profiling, were initially inspired by the works of acclaimed author, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

“I’ve been a big fan of Sherlock Holmes since I was eight years old,” he said. “My ambition was always to be able to read people like he does but I never really expected it to take off the way that it has.”
“Some people are a little nervous about what I might say, but I’m careful not to embarrass anyone,” he said. “What I do is all for entertainment purposes and audience members aren’t even required to come on stage if they’re too shy.
Following 23 sell out shows at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2014, Colin has performed in cities around the world and is about to embark on his first UK tour. “It’s been amazing going on stage in places like New York, San Francisco, London and Las Vegas” he said, “but I’m really looking forward to playing more intimate venues and getting up close and personal with more people across the UK.” Colin’s show, which arrives at The Forum, Darlington on September 9, combines the best elements of his Edinburgh performances, with new material he is currently filming for an American television series. SUMMER ON A SHOESTRING The school holidays can be costly, with families often spending hundreds of pounds in an effort to keep youngsters entertained. This year we want our readers to be able to spend time, not money, and have compiled this handy guide to enjoying summer on a shoestring…
Dress for Less Shop around and it’s easy to find good quality clothing at affordable prices. We found these amazing outfits in Primark for around £8 each and there are plenty of other bargains hiding on the high street. Remember to keep an eye out for summer sales and discount vouchers, particularly towards the end of the season when you can stock up on next year’s essentials at heavily reduced rates. If, however, you want to do away with spending all together, then why not arrange a swap shop with family or friends. You can each bring items that your children no longer wear, or have outgrown, and trade them in for something more suitable. You could also try customising existing clothing and adding low-cost embellishments such as studs and sequins to give them a new lease of life. For those who are particularly crafty then a sewing kit could mean you’re well on your way to creating outfits of your own.
Cucumber Sandw
Just type making your own clothes into an internet search engine and you’ll find hundreds of free, downloadable patterns, as well as top tips for upcycling and re-using old clothing, including transforming a man’s T-Shirt into a young boy’s shorts and creating a toddler’s play dress from an old pillowcase.
Stay Home and Save Spending time at home can be cost effective but it’s easy for boredom to creep in too. Try to keep a collection of board games close at hand – Monopoly and Scrabble are still top sellers - and don’t be afraid to go old-school with prop free alternatives like hide and seek. Next time you go shopping ask if there are any empty boxes you can have for free. Challenge your children to showcase their creativity by turning these blank cardboard canvases into a house, rocket or even a fort. Hang on to any old pieces of wool, paper and haberdashery you have lying around, such as buttons and bottle tops, as these could serve as decorations and come in handy for other rainy day arts and crafts too. If you and the kids have got time to put your feet up then why not pop down to the library first? It’s free to join and all manner of books are waiting to be borrowed - perfect for relaxing in the garden or curling up indoors if the weather lets you down.
For those of you who already have a tent, or a bit of spare cash to buy one, then camping in the garden can be a real adventure, even if it’s just a few yards from your own back door.
Explore Without Expense If you do feel like getting out and about over the next few months then there are plenty of places you can visit for free. Why not go hiking in the Cleveland Hills or cycling across the North York Moors? You can find easy to follow routes online or in the local tourist information centres and there are lots of stunning views to enjoy along the way. If the countryside isn’t your thing then how about a day by the coast? Both Seaton Carew and Saltburn-by-theSea are less than an hour’s drive away and offer the ideal opportunity to practice your sandcastle building skills. Closer to home you can spend the day in South Park, go back to the past at Piercebridge Roman Fort, explore the Darlington Heritage Trail or check out our handy what’s on guide (page 30) for more inspiration.
Feast Minus The Fortune
enjoying it with their family. If you and your brood are hitting the road this summer, then following this trend could help keep costs low wherever you go. It can be as simple as a few sandwiches, some fruit and a drink to wash it down and you’ve got a delicious, cost-effective meal to enjoy on the go – just remember to pack a blanket to sit on and a cool bag to keep everything fresh. Keep in mind, though, that some attractions won’t allow you to bring your own refreshments, so it’s worth checking before you set off. If you’re planning a party or social gathering, then consider making it a bring your own (BYO) event. Many guests are more than willing to contribute a potato salad to a barbecue or a bottle of fizz to a birthday bash - just remember to make that clear on the invitation so that no-one inadvertently turns up empty handed. It’s also worth keeping an eye out for special deals in supermarkets. Bulk buying things like buns and burgers can be more cost effective and ensures you have things on hand for the barbecue whenever the sun decides to shine.

WIN WIN WIN WIN WIN WIN WIN WIN WIN WIN WIN WIN WIN WIN WIN WIN WIN W WIN A TRIP TO THE LAKES DISTILLERY There’s something for everyone at The Lake District’s newest visitor attraction - and we’re giving one lucky reader the chance to discover it for themselves… Situated six miles north of Keswick on the A66, The Lakes Distillery encourages visitors to use sight, sound, smell and taste to understand how whisky, gin and vodka are made. An organised tour around the beautifully renovated 1850s Victorian model farm is the ideal way to discover this hidden treasure, with a special quiz on offer to keep younger visitors entertained. Tours run daily from 11am until 6pm and each begins with the screening of a cinematic production offering an insight into the history of distilling in the Lake District. It also shows the journey of River Derwent – where the Lakes Distillery sources its water - from its source at Sprinkling Tarn through to the Irish Sea. From here, visitors are given a chance to see spirits being distilled in unique, traditional artisan copper pot stills and smell the barrels in which the Lakes Single Malt has been maturing for the past several months. Each tour, which last between 45 and 60 minutes, ends in the Lake Distillery’s beautiful tasting room, with the opportunity to sample a selection of the company’s world class drinks. For those who want to make the most of their trip, the Lakes Distillery also boasts its
own award-winning Bistro, serving lunch, dinner and afternoon tea against the stunning backdrop of the Cumbrian fells. Menus in the Bistro, open from 11am until 9pm, are overseen by Michelin star chef, Terry Laybourne with lighter bites, coffee and cake also available from the outdoor catering cart. Dogs are welcome in the al fresco dining area, where they can enjoy a refreshing bowl of water and there are plenty of picturesque walking routes to be found nearby. This includes strolls around the beautiful Bassenthwaite Lake and along the banks of the River Derwent, just 150m away. The Lakes Distillery is open seven days a week from July 18 to September 6, with free parking and a free bus service running hourly from Keswick. Entry is charged at £12.50 per adult and £5 for young people aged 13 – 17, with children under 12 going free. Adult entry also includes a £5 discount to be used on any 70cl spirit in The Lakes Distillery shop, which sells a range of gifts and luxury items. For more information, please visit www.LakesDistillery.com or www.BistroAtTheDistillery.com
