A HEARTFELT HOLIDAY A leading charity is asking families to “have a heart this Halloween” and we’re here to show you how… For many young people, October 31 is a night of fun-filled frights, offering the opportunity to don their scariest costumes and go door to door collecting sweets. For some though, it’s another day of real fear, fighting against hardship, loneliness, poverty or abuse. This Halloween, international children’s charity, World Vision, is asking us to spare a thought for those living in some of the world’s hardest places and to carve our pumpkins into hearts in a show of solidarity. We’ve teamed up with the Carve A Heart Campaign to bring you a step by step guide to taking part, as well as a tasty way to use the left over filling…

How to Carve Your Pumpkin

Make More of the Filling

1. Cut around the stalk to make a lid Choose a large pumpkin and use a sharp serrated knife to cut off the crown. Measure a circle about two inches (5cm) radius from the stem and angle your knife to the centre of the stem when cutting. This will ensure your lid doesn’t drop into the centre once you’ve hollowed it out.

Once you’ve carved your pumpkin, why not reward yourself and utilise the filling for this mouthwatering meal …

2. Remove the contents Scoop out the filling and scrape the sides as clean as you can so that as much light will shine through it as possible. Set aside your filling for the recipe below.

2 onions, cut into wedges

3. Carve the heart Using a marker pen, draw the outline of your heart onto at least one side of the pumpkin. Then use a small sharp serrated knife to cut out your heart, remembering to always cut away from you in case the knife slips.

250ml double cream

4. Finishing touches Finally, pop a tea light inside the pumpkin and light it. Upload a picture of your creation to the World Vision Facebook page (Facebook.com/worldvisionuk) then place your pumpkin in your window to share this night of hope with your family, friends and neighbours.

Grandma’s Pumpkin Soup Ingredients Serves: 6 750g pumpkin, peeled, seeded and cubed 2 carrots, coarsely chopped 2 1/2 tablespoons olive oil 1 large potato, sliced 1 litre water 2 or 3 cubes vegetable stock, crumbled 1 1/4 tablespoons ground nutmeg 1 teaspoon ground black pepper Salt to taste Method Preheat oven to 220 C / Gas 7. Place your pumpkin, carrots and onions in a roasting tin. Drizzle with olive oil and bake in a preheated oven for 40 minutes, until soft but not charred. In the meantime place the water and crumbled stock cubes into a large saucepan and using a medium heat, bring to the boil. Cook the potato in simmering water, for about 20 minutes until soft. Add the potato and water mix to the roasted vegetables and blend in a food processor until smooth. Return to the pan and place on a low heat stirring in the cream, nutmeg, pepper and salt. Heat gently to serve.

TOGETHER WE CAN

What is Strength training? Strength training or resistance training adds definition to your muscles making you fitter and giving you a better toned body. It involves strengthening and toning your muscles by contracting them against a resisting force. There are two types of resistance training and they are called Isometric and Isotonic. Both make you stronger and can get you into better shape. Remember that with strength training your muscles need time to recover, so it should only be done on alternate days. Always make sure that you warm up before and cool down properly after strength training. Should I use my own body strength or weights? There isn’t such thing as a “better” method, because both bodyweight and free weight exercises can (and should) have a place in your workout routines. Both types of strength training can cause injury especially if the form is not correct. You need to be more careful when using free weights as the potential for injury can be higher especially if you use a weight that you’re unable to use perfect form with. It is much better to do one repetition correctly than 50 incorrectly. So what are the benefits of Strength Training? • Protects bone health and increases bone density and muscle mass. Brilliant for post - menopausal women as it will help reduce the risk of osteoporosis. • Makes you fitter, stronger and more toned. • Helps you develop better body mechanics or motor fitness, (balance, coordination, flexibility, speed and reaction time – this decreases as we get older). • Can be as effective as medication in decreasing arthritis pain. • Like all exercise it boosts energy levels and serotonin (happy hormone). • A great anti-depressant as it increases the hormone serotonin. • Continues to burn calories at rest. • As more calories are used to make and maintain muscle than fat, strength training can boost your metabolism by 15 percent brilliant way to kickstart a weight loss plan.

The two mile trail also passes through the heart of Rockwell Local Nature Reserve, which was restored in 2000 to provide a tranquil habitat for all manner of wildlife.

The Whinnies & Middleton St George This substantial four mile route takes in both The Whinnies Local Nature Reserve, on the site of a former iron works near the Darlington to Stockton Railway, and the Whinnies Water Park, which was gifted to the village by Northumbrian Water in 1950.

Broken Scar and River Tees A stunning trail along the River Tees, through woodland and in to the West End of Darlington, passing Baydale Beck and the historic Tees Cottage Pumping Station. This walk is the most challenging on the list and covers five miles.

Cocker Beck Local Nature Reserve A winding walk exploring woodland and riverside habitats between the Mowden, Cockerton and Branksome estates. The 45 minute route is fairly flat and easily accessible, with structured paths that follow the becks.

Red Hall Local Nature Reserve A flat and easily accessible walk through a small nature reserve, which features grasslands and ponds. You should be able to complete it in around 20 minutes but remember to look out for its wide variety of wildlife, including the Great Spotted Woodpecker.

SIXTY YEARS OF LOVE AND LAUGHTER

CLASSIC CLAPTON

If variety is the spice of life then the Ken Dodd Happiness Show should be hotter than a vindaloo! We caught up with the selfconfessed trickster to talk magic, music and tickling sticks ahead of his highly anticipated Darlington return…

Middlesbrough Theatre Friday 18 September

Few people spend as long in the showbiz spotlight as comedian, actor and allround entertainer, Ken Dodd. The proud Liverpudlian, who is renowned as one of the UK’s funniest men, recently celebrated 60 years as a professional performer and still spends much of his time touring up and down the country like “a human yo-yo”. This October Ken will be stopping off at Darlington Civic Theatre – a place he still fondly refers to as “The Hippodrome” – for two nights of laughter, mayhem and old-school variety. “The first time I played Darlington was back in the 50s or 60s,” said Ken. “Even back then the audience had great chuckle muscles and it’s been one of my favourite places to perform ever since. This time I’ll be taking to the stage with a few friends in tow, including the real star of the show, Dickie Mint.”

30th Anniversary Tour

CLASSIC CLAPTON the World’s No1 Eric Clapton Tribute Band featuring frontman Mike Hall will be making their first ever appearance at Middlesbrough Theatre in September as part of their 30th Anniversary Tour.

Ventriloquist doll Dickie, part of the iconic Diddymen, will be joined for the evening by magician Amethyst, singer Sybie Jones and a full live band. Ken himself, who has appeared in several films and even topped the music charts with hits including Tears and Love is Like a Violin, will also perform – and has stocked up on tickling sticks especially for the occasion. “I’ll be sharing new jokes and songs I’ve only just discovered I can sing,” he said, “and we won’t let the audience leave until they’ve had a good laugh.” The Ken Dodd Happiness Show will be at Darlington Civic Theatre on Thursday October 8 and Friday October 9. Tickets, priced at £21 or £19.50, are available at www.darlingtoncivic.co.uk or by calling 01325 486555

FIVE FUN FACTS ABOUT KEN He is in The Guinness Book of Records for telling 1500 jokes in three-and-a-half hours. His infamous tickling sticks are specially made in Cumbria and Ken uses hundreds every year He has his own ‘Giggle Map’ of Britain which tells him what makes people laugh in different parts of the country. His single Tears stayed at No.1 in the UK charts for six weeks in 1965 and is still one of the country’s best-selling records of all time. He was voted the ‘Greatest Merseysider’ of all time in April 2003

The band will be performing at Middlesbrough Theatre, The Avenue, Middlesbrough on Friday 18 September. Doors open at 7pm. Band on stage at 7.30pm. Tickets priced £15 (concessions £12.50) are available from the box office – Tel: 01642 815181. More information available at:- www.middlesbroughtheatre. co.uk This will be their first ever appearance at Middlesbrough Theatre although they have sold out numerous theatres in the north east. Fans are advised to book early. They will perform all of EC’s classic songs including Wonderful Tonight, Tears in Heaven, Crossroads, I Shot The Sheriff, Cocaine, Lay Down Sally and of course Layla! There will even be an “UNPLUGGED” segment. NEARLY 2 HOURS OF CLASSIC CLAPTON The band was formed in 1985 in Newcastle upon Tyne long before the term “tribute band” was invented, and named themselves ‘’After Midnight’’ after Eric Clapton’s first solo hit. In guitar/vocalist Mike Hall, they have a front man who not only looks like Eric, he sings and plays guitar like him too! In 1999, Mike won a national look-alike competition held at Madam Tussauds in London. Mike has met Slowhand twice, and even received a message of encouragement from the guitar maestro (written on a Concorde menu). TYNE TEES TELEVISION were so impressed, they made a programme about them, called ‘COVER THEIR TRACKS’. It was shown in August 2000 and received rave reviews, leading to national recognition.

To Win a pair of tickets to see Ken Dodd on Thursday 8th October simply answer the following question:

In 2001 they embarked on an extensive tour of UK Theatres. They called the tribute show “CLASSIC CLAPTON”. Since then, they have continued to perform throughout the UK and Europe including concerts at The Royal Festival Hall, London and a triumphant appearance at Glastonbury Festival in 2002. In the past few years they have performed numerous concerts in Europe including Ireland, Spain, Estonia, Holland and France. In 2009 they appeared at St Andrews Auditorium in Mumbai. A 10,000 mile round-trip for 1 concert, but it was a great experience.

Where are Ken Dodds infamous tickling sticks made?

In the past 30 years CLASSIC CLAPTON have become something of a rock institution.

Closing date for entry is 30th September Please see the bottom of page 27 for details of how to enter.

FALL INTO FASHION

The temperature may be dropping but, before you rush off into hibernation, why not check out these top tips for staying warm and looking hot all autumn long?

For him 1 Hell for leather – This season’s must-have material for men is most certainly leather. Whether it’s a belt, shoes or even a jacket, there’s no place to ‘hide’ (get it?). 2 Check it out – From shirts and scarves, checked patterns abound, just remember a failed game of noughts and crosses might invalidate your receipt. 3 Back to black – For a stylish way to protect your essentials, why not invest in a manly backpack? Make it black, grey or blue and you’ll be covering two trends in one. 4 Style star in training – It may sound like a ‘running’ joke but one of the hottest looks for autumn 2015 is to pair tailored trousers with trainers – at least you’ll be prepared if you need to run to work.

For her 5 Go big and go bold – Jewellery is tipped to be huge (literally) this season. It’s all about making a statement with colour, heavy materials, oversized pieces and a good dose of bling for your fingers, neck, wrist and ears. 6 Animal attraction – Leopard print is making a comeback and it’s bringing more friends from the animal kingdom. Keep a look out for wild designs pouncing on you from head to toe.

enough to withstand any early frosts. 8 The cherry on top – Prim headbands are a must for the next few months. Not only do they look pretty but, by keeping your hair under control in the autumn winds, they serve a practical purpose, too.

For everyone 9 ‘Bean’ there, done that – The Beanie hat is back and, we’re relieved to say, that not only is this a stylish seasonal accessory, but it comes in really handy for a bad hair day, too. 10 It’s good to gilet – Gilets are great for men and women, serving as both a stylish accessory and a way of keeping warm. Layer with contrasting fabrics or over long sleeves and you’ll tick off another of this season’s key trends.

HOUNDGATE TOWNHOUSE APPOINTS RAMSAY-TRAINED HEAD CHEF David Garlinge, originally from the NorthEast, is the latest key player to join the team at Houndgate Townhouse in Darlington. New Head Chef David has ten years experience in the restaurant industry, working for notable chefs Gordon Ramsay and Jason Atherton at Maze and Pollen Street Social in London, as well as at local foodie favourites The Raby Hunt and The Orangery at Rockliffe Hall. He was also a Semi-Finalist in MasterChef: The Professionals 2013. This appointment follows the recruitment of new Hotel Manager Joe Nalder, from the 5* Rudding Park Hotel in Harrogate in December and Jim Conway, a trained Sommelier, who came from the Mr & Mrs Smith-rated Coach House at Middleton Lodge, and joins as Deputy Manager. David Garlinge comments, “The exterior of Houndgate Townhouse grabbed me. That blast of refinement stood out in a place I didn’t expect it to be in. I want my food to reflect that, simple and elegant, refined and recognizable. We have some of the best produce on our doorstep; I want to find the best of our

region and show it off in my own way, and include some cherry-picked examples of the amazing produce that the rest of the world has to offer. I hope many people will join me on what I hope to be the biggest journey of my life.” Natalie Cooper, Director of Houndgate Townhouse, adds, “It is great to have David, Joe and Jim head up the team. We are focused on creating a great customer experience whether that be eating, drinking or staying over, and hope to put Darlington on the map in the process. The Houndgate ethos is to create the feeling of a “home from home” where customers can enjoy our high quality offer of excellent produce and customer service in a relaxed environment. This offer aims to reflect the effort and attention to detail put into refurbishing the Grade II listed townhouse from council offices to the eight-bedroom hotel. Houndgate Townhouse celebrated its second birthday on 1st August 2015.

HAPPY HENS Ever wondered which are the best cities for a hen do? Then make sure you add Liverpool to your list. Following the hen party she planned with a co-bridesmaid, Kate Hindhaugh reports on her experience… As easy as it might seem, planning a hen do is incredibly hard work, particularly when you’re tasked with organising a weekend away for a big group of people in a city you’ve never been to before. As one of the bridesmaids for my best friend, the daunting task fell on my (and the other bridesmaid’s) shoulders and we were determined to make it a break to remember. We thought about a whole range of places to visit and eventually decided on Liverpool. Although we didn’t know it at all, it just seemed like a fun and unusual choice and we set about calling on every single person we’d ever known from the city for ideas. We considered everything from paintballing and pole dancing to sightseeing on Liverpool’s famous World War II landing vehicle – the Yellow Duckmarine – which as it transpired was no longer available for bookings, but we wanted something more unusual. Finally, completely by chance, we stumbled upon somewhere that we thought would be just perfect for a group of girls out for fun but with added style. The Tea Parlour, Mathew Street, Liverpool, is run by two lovely ladies, Sharon Conteh, 43 and Laura Curtis, 33, and was in theory the perfect venue for our friend’s hen do. From the moment we arrived, we had high hopes. The reviews looked great and the website really sold the concept of vintage afternoon tea with dress-up boxes, live piano music and some amazing pictures of the décor however, none of this did it justice. The colonial style building is the perfect setting for a very British, vintage afternoon tea and it’s evident that a lot of time and effort has

gone into choosing the decoration. Sitting down to our afternoon tea, at tables full of beautiful china tea sets, we were quickly served our choice of English Breakfast Tea or Earl Grey Tea, complete with traditional tea timers and strainers, as well as jugs of elderflower water with strawberries. The venue operates a ‘bring your own bubbly’ policy so while we waited for our sandwiches to be served, we popped the corks and set about getting involved with the activity we’d been given, which was decorating our very own knickers! When my co-bridesmaid and I had planned the event we were a bit concerned that opting for an activity would disrupt the afternoon tea but we needn’t have worried. We stayed in the same seats and laughed at how poor our sewing skills were and as an added bonus everyone had a souvenir of the day to keep. As the sandwiches arrived we were amazed at how much was on each platter. There was a delicious selection of traditional British combinations including cucumber and cream cheese, coronation chicken, prawns and avocado butter and my personal favourite, roast ham with red currant jelly. The delicious savoury dishes were followed by tasty scones with clotted cream and jam and then a selection of cakes, the remainder of which we had boxed up to take home with us. Three hours after arriving, we left the venue having enjoyed one of the best hen do activities I’ve ever been to. The service was perfect and the afternoon went without a hitch, leaving everybody with smiles on their faces and my friend and myself to quietly celebrate at our success.

On to the evening… When you’re in a new place, where to go to get the best out of your night is a complete mystery and, after our initial plans turned out to be a very poor choice, it was by chance that we ended up at Albert Docks. We were faced with a huge selection of bars and we planned to try them all, however, this went out the window when we found a bar called The Smugglers Cove. The quirky décor, the speedy drinks service and the lively atmosphere meant we stayed at the venue until we headed to our final destination, Alma de Cuba, later in the evening. We had it on good authority that Alma de Cuba was a great place to go and this is where we planned to end the night. Despite the fact that the venue does not allow any hen do paraphernalia, it more than made up for it with a lively atmosphere, tasty cocktails and live Brazilian petal show, which runs every Saturday night. Liverpool may not seem the first choice for a hen weekend but we had a fantastic time, with memories that will last forever. Now it’s just the wedding to look forward to!

Liverpool for everyone… Of course the land of Cilla and The Beatles isn’t just for a hen weekend. Liverpool has undergone a major transformation in recent years and, while still retaining its character and that Scouse friendliness, there’s plenty to see and do. And that’s definitely the case in the months ahead. The amazing poppy sculpture that drew millions of people to the Tower of London is on the move from November until January. Weeping Windows will be based at St George’s Hall and will see cascades of ceramic poppies put in place as a poignant reminder of those who lost their lives in conflict. If you’re a culture vulture there’s a whole host of places to visit in Liverpool, which surprisingly boasts the largest number of museums and galleries outside of London. Or if you just want to remind yourself that it’s the home town of arguably the greatest pop group of all time, there’s plenty of ways to do just that. Step aboard the Magical Mystery Tour bus at Albert Dock and you can enjoy a two hour journey through the Beatles’ Liverpool – visiting the places that inspired songs such as Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields and end up at the Cavern Club.

And why not complete your Beatlesfest with a stay at the themed Hard Day’s Night Hotel? Liverpool’s waterfront has undergone an astonishing renaissance in recent years and is now packed full of trendy bars and restaurants –and you can still enjoy a ferry across the Mersey if you fancy a bit of sea air. Sports fans are also well served and many visitors make a pilgrimage to the hallowed ground at Anfield where you can visit the Liverpool FC Museum and even dine in the Boot Room Sports Café. It’s also a city where there’s a number of surprises for tourists wanting a really different experience. The Mersey Tunnels tours take you deep into the Queensway Tunnel which runs below the Mersey. Or why not take a trip to the upmarket Wirral and visit Port Sunlight, a unique and stunning 19th century garden village which was created for the Sunlight Soap factory workers. If you don’t have a grand plan then you can simply enjoy wandering round the historic streets and look at the iconic buildings – including of course the famous Royal Liver Building with its Liver Bird peering over the crowds below. Liverpool is a revelation – a mix of culture, history and heritage filled with people with a sense of pride. For the casual visitor it’s an absolute joy – if you go once we suspect you’ll soon be back.
