FOOD FOR THE SOUL
Carmel College students load their school minibus with aid destined for Syria.
A Darlington charity, set up to help those affected by the Syrian war, has thanked the town’s schools and residents for their generosity.
DAR’s schools liaison officer, Alison Holland, praised the college’s efforts and said the charity had been “overwhelmed” by the support it had received.
Darlington Assistance for Refugees (DAR) was inundated with donations after appealing for food to be sent to the wartorn country’s largest city, Aleppo, with Carmel College being among the first to show its support.
Anyone who would like to volunteer with the charity is now being asked to email DARhelp@outlook.com or search Darlington Assistance for Refugees on Facebook.
SUMS IN A SLICE Schoolchildren have been given an early taste of restaurant life as part of an initiative designed to boost their maths, develop their palate and promote healthy eating. Rainbow class pupils from Heathfield Academy, Darlington, enjoyed a visit to the town’s Al Forno Italian restaurant, where they were given the chance to make their own reduced sugar pizzas. Assistant head teacher Sue Wilson said: “We have been studying fractions in maths and using paper pizzas to introduce the concepts of half and quarter. The children really enjoyed having a go at the real thing and developing their table manners.”
PRETTY AS A PICTURE
Example graffiti art
Graffiti experts from Darlington are using their skills to protect urban art in the spiritual home of acclaimed painter, Banksy. Nordic Focus Training Group, which was originally set up to combat and remove vandalism, is now using its expert methods to protect murals across Bristol. Company chairman Peter Robinson said: “We were originally called by Bristol Council to remove swathes of graffiti adorning walls around the city. Now we are using the same materials to preserve the murals that are considered urban art forms and helping to enhance the artists’ work.”
ALL A-BOARD The company behind Darlington’s Northern Echo Arena has appointed its first board of directors. The six-strong group, led by Chairman Mike Keeligan, will represent DMP Arena Trading Limited (DMPATL), which manages all of the arena’s facilities, branding and rugby on behalf of Darlington Mowden Park RFC (DMPRFC). While most members of the new board have been involved in the club for several years, this new formal arrangement will allow them to work alongside DMPRFC’s General Committee and help take the club forward with its “ambitious and exciting” future plans.

A MINIBUS OF MEMORIES A bright red minibus is now helping students with complex needs in memory of a former student. The £30,000 vehicle, specially adapted for wheelchairs, has been donated to Beaumont Hill Academy, Darlington, as a lasting tribute to six-year-old Emma Howard, who attended the school between hospital stays. Emma’s family were guests of honour at a special event to mark the handover, where it was revealed that an additional £8,000 has been donated by Mitie, the facilities management company that operates the Education Village site, to help train staff members to drive the new bus.
READY TO RUN The Bannatyne Group, which has its headquarters at Haughton Road, Darlington, has strengthened its senior team with three key appointments. Former Managing Director, Justin Musgrove, who joined the company in 2007, has taken on the role of Chief Executive Officer. Accountant Ken Campling, who has been Finance Director for the past two years, has now been appointed Chief Financial Officer and Board Director. And Anthony Elliott, who joined the group after a 12 year career in Rugby Union, becomes Director of Operations.
FRIENDS and family were blown away as pupils performed a traditional tale with a contemporary twist. More than 60 Year 1 students at West Park Academy, Darlington took to the stage for a spectacular rendition of The Three Little Pigs, with their own alternative ending. In a change from the usual tale, this production’s big bad wolf was summoned to appear before a judge and jury, where his defence explained his huffing and puffing was simply due to a very bad cold.

GOOD NEWS FOR SCHOOL Senior school staff have won high praise from Her Majesty’s inspectors for the impact they have made on an academy that is now on the rise. St Aidan’s Academy, Darlington, which recently appointed a new management team, has been rated ‘good,’ in its latest Ofsted report, with the school being applauded for its significant improvements. The report stated: “In a very short time, the new principal has made a massive difference to the quality of education that the academy offers and her infectious enthusiasm rubs off on to members of staff at all levels.”

Billy McMeekin, who helps keep Darlington College running smoothly, will be joining the Ferryhill Wheelers cycling club for a gruelling coast-to-coast trek in aid of Help for Heroes in July. A keen cyclist for the past 51 years, Billy’s two-day ride from Ferryhill to Morecambe will return via Saltburn and the Phoenix House Recovery Centre, Catterick Garrison, covering a total distance of 300 miles. LIFE IN THE FAST LINE Two teenage trainees are already on the road to success after joining a 90-yearold family business. James Towler and Blane Adamson are now working at the Darlington service centre for Vauxhall dealer, Sherwoods. The duo, both 16, are the latest in a string of apprentices taken on by the company, with the assurance of full-time jobs on the successful completion of their training.

CURTAIN CALL As Darlington’s historic theatre prepares for a brief intermission, its passion for the arts is going on the road… This summer, Darlington Civic Theatre is entering the next stage of its illustrious history, with a multi-million pound refurbishment beginning in June. The scale of the ambitious project means that the landmark venue will have to close temporarily, though its sprit will live on during the works thanks to a series of performances in the Dolphin Centre’s Central Hall. This includes a production of A Tale of Two Cities in November and two Royal Geographical Society (RGS) talks in July and October. The first RGS talk, on Monday July 18, will be led by best-selling author and navigator, Tristan Gooley, who will be talking about the mysteries of water, from wild swimming in England to Polynesian canoe navigation via the icy expanses of the Arctic.
association with Darlington Civic Theatre, will interweave one family’s intensely personal drama with the terror and chaos of the French Revolution. Its cast will be made up entirely of members of the local community and anyone wishing to take part is being asked to email lyndsey.middleton@ darlington.gov.uk ahead of the auditions in July. All three events are designed to entertain theatre fans while the Civic Theatre refurbishment gets underway. For those wanting to get more directly involved in the new theatre itself, there is a unique opportunity to literally add your name to the restored Edwardian auditorium by sponsoring a seat.
This will be followed on Monday October 3 by award-winning photographer, writer, TV environmental scientist and Oxford University lecturer, Nick Middleton, taking visitors on a theoretical tour of countries that don’t exist, lack diplomatic recognition or UN membership and inhabit a realm of shifting borders.
Each sponsor will receive an engraved, brass plaque for 15 years on the chair of their choice, as well as commemorative certificate to mark their involvement in the campaign supported by North East actor Stephen Tompkinson.
In between, the Central Hall – where Charles Dickens is believed to have read in 1858 and 1861 – will play host to a live performance of one of his most famous stories on November 19 and 20.
A spectacular fundraising gala will also be held on May 31, hosted by national treasure Christopher Biggins and promises to be a fond farewell to the venue as we know it.
This special production of A Tale Of Two Cities, led by The Touring Consortium Theatre Company in

MORE THAN JUST FUNNY BUSINESS From humble beginnings as a one off performance, to one of the region’s leading suppliers of live shows and acts, Hilarity Bites has turned clowning around into a side splitting art form. The brand’s passionate founder - the rather aptly entitled Neil Jollie - has spent the past nine years organising events, showcasing comedic talent and offering aspiring performers a chance to step into the spotlight. Now, with ambitions of eventually opening a dedicated comedy and arts venue, he’s preparing for another hectic summer, with live shows running across Darlington and beyond. “When I first started Hilarity Bites I was balancing it with a full time job and a number of other commitments,” he said. “Now I’m occupied on the comedy side almost seven days a week, but luckily I’m a bit of a workaholic.” Among Hilarity Bites’ upcoming highlights are performances at The Forum Music Centre, Darlington Hole in the Wall and Darlington Seen, as well as a New Act Competition running throughout June. “We run a pretty full programme of events,” said Neil, from Darlington. “This includes new material nights twice a month, at least one touring show every month and our regular weekend shows featuring some of the best comedians on the circuit.
If laughter is the best medicine, then one man has found the perfect prescription. We sent Claire Buchan to meet Darlington’s own doctor of comedy, the appropriately named Neil Jollie…
“The New Act Competition for example is now a mainstay in our schedule and has proven to be a great way of highlighting emerging talent, with past entrants including Chris Ramsey, Daniel Sloss and many others who are now household names.”
Craig, who has performed in such exotic locations as Kazakhstan and Vietnam, will be bringing his third solo stand-up tour to Hilarity Bites at Seen in Darlington on May 18, just after his planned appearance at the Everest Base Camp.
Neil’s passion for the comedy genre and his commitment to making each show “the best yet,” has contributed to Hilarity Bites’ growing popularity and taken the brand from Hartlepool, Crook and Bishop Auckland right up to the Edinburgh Fringe.
This will be followed on June 4 with the return of the regular Hilarity Bites night at the Forum in Darlington, led this time by music-based stand up Rob Deering with an appearance by Dominic Woodward and MC Kiri Pritchard-McLean.
“The first gig I organised was a real baptism of fire, with the microphone running out of batteries and a gas leak in the cellar,” he said. “After that I felt I could overcome almost anything and I’m pleased to say we’ve come a long way in a relatively short space of time. “This year I’m hoping to build on the existing partnerships I have with venues across Darlington and the wider North East, add even more sites to the roster and continue bringing the best acts I can to comedy fans across the region. After that we’re right on course for world domination.” Anyone who would like to support Neil’s comedy coup, can attend one of Hilarity Bites’ upcoming shows, including appearances by Craig Campbell, Rob Deering, Nick Helm and Carl Hutchinson.
The ‘next big thing’ Nick Helm will take to the Seen In Darlington stage the following day (June 5) before Carl ‘The Fixer’ Hutchinson hits the Forum on June 14, fresh from supporting Chris Ramsey on his UK tour. “I’ve been trying to get Nick Helm to come to Darlington ever since I first saw him perform at the Edinburgh Fringe,” said Neil. “Thankfully I’ve finally been able to make it happen and his appearance will form part of a fantastic summer of comedy that I’m sure audiences will love.” For more information about Hilarity Bites, including event details and tickets, visit www.hilaritybites.co.uk.
“We offer established acts the opportunity to try new material in a supportive environment and are equally committed to giving new acts the opportunity to progress.

SUGAR AND SPICE AND ALL THINGS NICE AT DARLINGTON FOOD FESTIVAL From chocolate and cheese, to sausages and sundaes, the region’s finest food will be showcased at a popular family festival later this month. The third annual Distinctly Delicious Darlington - Festival of Food will return to the town centre on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 May and looks set to be the biggest and best yet. Throughout the two-day event, shoppers and visitors to the festival will be able to take their pick from more than 50 stalls at High Row and West Row, selling locally produced artisan and speciality food and drink. Among the record number of producers, bakers, confectioners and street food vendors taking part are Darlington-based The Green Guerrilla, H Taylor & Sons butchers, Clervaux Café and Black Olive Deli. Those coming from further afield include the Northumberland Sausage Company, The Moody Baker, Lottie McPhees Cupcakes, Weardale Cheese and Masons Yorkshire Gin. Curry experts Spicymonkey, from Durham, are taking part for the first time and will be tempting visitors with their range of sauces from countries as far afield as Jamaica and Burma. And this will be the third outing for Darlington chocolatier, Truly Tempting Chocolate, which has supported the event from the start and will be launching its peanut butter chocolate bars at the festival. “I have just watched the festival get bigger and better every year,” said owner Wendy Sanderson, “and I think it’s a great way to showcase what we are doing here in Darlington. “All our chocolates are made entirely by hand and I’m hoping for a great reaction to our peanut butter bars.” Also new this year will be a beer bar, run by Hole in the Wall and a gin bar operated by Hash Bar & Kitchen, both based in Darlington. The festival is the brainchild of BID Company Distinct Darlington and manager Alex Hirst said: “The event has doubled in size in three years which is something we’re really proud of, “The festival really does shine a spotlight on North East food and each year the variety of produce on sale just gets greater – and everyone who visits comments on the quality. The festival will also feature demonstrations from chefs from leading North East venues, along with the return of the Distinctly Delicious Market Awards, artisan food tastings and drop-in cooking workshops. Organisers will also build on the success of the famous crowd-pleasing centrepiece event; The Locomotion Cake Parade, which recreates the journey of Stephenson’s famous train through Darlington in cake. For more information, visit www.darlofoodfest.org or, to take part in the Chilli Eating Competition, contact Simon Preston at simon@graceonline.co.uk

A FIVE STAR HOME AWAY FROM HOME When it comes time to get away from it all, many people hop aboard a plane, train or even a ship and search for bliss in a far flung destination - but rest and relaxation could be far closer than you think.

Factbox: An overnight stay in a New Hall Superior Twin room at Rockliffe Hall hotel is priced from £200 per night, including spa use and breakfast. The spa’s Neom Organics treatments are currently priced at £90 for 60 minutes and The Orangery’s five course tasting menu is priced at £75 per person. For more information and to see the full range of packages available visit www.rockliffehall. com, call (01325) 729999 or email enquiries@ rockliffehall.com
We sent Sue Riney-Smith to find her inner peace at Darlington’s very own, Rockliffe Hall… From the moment you enter the award-winning spa at Rockliffe Hall you can feel your worries just melting away. While conveniently located in the heart of Hurworth, this stunning sanctuary feels a million miles away from anything I’ve ever experienced and it’s no surprise that it has recently been awarded top level, 5 Bubble Luxury Spa status by the Good Spa Guide. As one of the largest spas in the UK, the venue has plenty of ways to keep you restfully occupied, whether it’s for an hour, an afternoon or even a full day. Its facilities, including an outdoor hot tub, hydro pool, igloo and sound wave therapy room, have all been designed to help enhance circulation, boost the immune system and leave visitors feeling healthier and revitalised. And if, like me, you’re in need of even more TLC, then the extensive range of holistic spa rituals and results-driven spa treatments on offer are ideal.
I opted for a Neom Organics treatment, combining shiatsu and Thai massage, which is designed to destress and aid relaxation. It is one of four new treatments introduced to mark the launch of Rockliffe Hall’s stylish spa garden, which boasts two hot pools, including an infinity edge experience pool with massage features, a warm Jacuzzi and landscaped areas with views across the grounds. While I didn’t have time explore the garden itself during my visit I did thoroughly enjoy my 60 minute session and the calm setting of the room, which was beautifully decorated and delicately fragranced, left me feeling like I was floating away on a cloud of pure joy. After being so beautifully relaxed by my attentive therapist it seemed a shame to spoil it all by hitting the gym, so I ashamedly bypassed the spa’s state-of-the-art fitness suite and its wide range of wellness classes - though I do hope to make use of these services as a future spa member - and instead went straight to sample the hotel’s culinary delights. Set in the 18th century Old Hall, Rockliffe’s flagship
restaurant, The Orangery, is undoubtedly one of the jewels in its glittering crown. Under the watchful eye of executive chef Richard Allen, the eatery uses premium ingredients that not only look not only look good but taste good too. With such variety on offer we chose to enjoy as much as possible and opted for the five course tasting menu starting with a delicate amuse bouche. This was followed for me by a stunning sea trout starter, which deliciously combined smoked fillet, parfait and tartar, while my husband tucked in to scallops with a gorgeous crab mayonnaise, kaffir lime, bisque and sea beans. Our intermediate dish of liver parfait rolled in chocolate and mackerel paved the way for a memorable main course, which included turbot with chicken oyster, leeks and celeriac for my husband and crispy pork belly with parched langoustine, squash and sea needles for me.
under the guidance of Alex the Sommelier. He, like all of the staff at Rockliffe Hall, was extremely friendly, courteous and obviously highly experienced in his specific field. Despite being perfectly full, we made enough room to share a cheeseboard before retiring to the beautiful oak-panelled bar for a nightcap. They only way to end such an amazing day, was to retire to one of the elegant ensuite bedrooms, that recently helped Rockliffe Hall earn the title of VisitEngland’s Large Hotel of the Year. Our suite, a New Hall Superior Twin, featured two amazing queen sized beds, a seating and dressing area and magnificent views over the gardens and golf course, as well as a luxury bathroom with a TV that can be enjoyed while soaking in the tub. Everything about our stay was sublime and I drifted off dreaming of the day that I could return.
Our culinary experience was complimented wonderfully by a range of wines which we matched to each course Darlington Today | 13
ADVERTORIAL
Hi my name is Dianne Darville (former Rosemary Conley Franchisee) and I am a fully qualified coach in nutrition, fitness and meditation. With so many different classes available it can difficult to decide what is best for you. One important thing to consider is whether the instructor is fully qualified and has your best interests at heart. In the meantime these tips might help…
Define Your Motivation Losing weight is a 3-part process which includes exercising, cutting down calories and your mental attitude. This last one can mean the difference between success and failure. Here are 8 tips that may help! 1. The Right Reason! Do you want to lose weight or does someone else want you to? List all the reasons why you want to lose weight. Delete any reason that says “have to or must.” Such words imply obligation, not desire; eventually, they’ll also invite the instinct to rebel. Change each “have to” into a “want to.” 2. Choose an Attainable Goal Aim to lose 1lb per week and don’t be disappointed if you maintain but focus on your progress over a year rather than three months. Be careful about relying solely on figures. Success is a variety of things; increased muscle tone and mass; reduced fat mass; low visceral fat; improved hydration; increased bone mass; normal blood pressure and cholesterol levels; clothes fit; you feel healthier 3. Design Your Own Plan Little changes like smaller portions or preparing foods differently, can add up to big results. Think about the foods you love and work your diet around them. Love chocolate? Have a small piece every day. If you prefer to snack, divide your meals into six small meals. Don’t deny yourself your favourite foods. 4. Visualize the New You A mental dress rehearsal prepares you to recognise and accept success. Close your eyes, breathe deeply, and picture yourself healthier and slimmer. 5. Get Your Priorities Straight Make commitment appointments. For instance, first thing in the morning, set your goal for the day, whether it’s to come to class or to cook a healthy meal. Shop for healthy foods once a week, always on the same day if possible then it becomes second nature. Be prepared for any obstacles you might encounter, such as a visit from friends or family, a meal out or a weekend away. Keep a food diary and record of your exercise, remember to fill
it out. You are only cheating yourself by being dishonest. 6. Uncover Emotional Obstacles Sadness and anger are two of the most common reasons women overeat, but food doesn’t change these. Your diary can provide valuable insights into what may be causing you to binge occasionally. Once you start evaluating what triggers eating, you’ll be able to develop more effective strategies to deal with the underlying factors. Remember you are not on a diet but changing your lifestyle! 7. Celebrate Every Achievement Rewards reinforce positive behaviour, but only if they’re meaningful. When you reach a milestone in your weight-loss or exercise pattern or touching your toes for the first time, treat yourself to something that celebrates that particular achievement. 8. Forgive Yourself If you make an unhealthy food choice, move on, no-one is perfect. Reprimanding yourself won’t change what you have done but you can change the future, move on. For the rest of the week, make careful choices to counter it, and just reduce the portion of each meal. It is not
recommended that you miss meals. A momentary slip won’t register on the scales. A massive binge will. Stay Positive.

SIZZLING SUMMER RECIPES
PRAWN AND CHORIZO SKEWERS
Make more of your barbecue and cook up a storm with these creative alternatives to traditional bangers and burgers…
Method: Soak 12 bamboo skewers in cold water for 30 minutes or use metal skewers. Combine the olive oil, lime juice and zest, garlic, and dried chilli flakes in a bowl. Add the prawns, toss to coat, cover and marinate in the fridge for about 30 minutes. Squirt the maple syrup into a shallow bowl, add the chorizo and toss to coat. Thread the prawns and chorizo on to the skewers, allowing three prawns, two chunks of chorizo and a lime wedge for each. When the barbecue has reached medium heat grill the skewers for 3 minutes on each side until the prawns are pink and the chorizo is sizzling. Remove from the barbecue, drizzle with maple syrup and serve with a sweet chilli dip if desired. Recipe courtesy of Clarks Maple Syrup.
Makes 12 • Preparation time: 10 minutes (approx.) plus 30 minutes marinating Cooking time: 6 minutes (approx.) Ingredients: • 24 large, raw, shell on prawns • 4 tablespoons olive oil • Juice and zest of 1/2 lime • 1 clove garlic, crushed • 1 teaspoon dried chilli flakes
• 4 chorizo sausages or black pudding cut into thick slices • Clarks maple syrup • At least 1 lime cut into wedges, with 12 wedges in total • Sweet chilli dip to serve (optional)
CHIPOTLE PORK BURGERS WITH PINEAPPLE SALSA Makes 4 • Preparation time: 20 minutes • Cooking time: 12 minutes (approx.)
Prawn and chorizo skewers
Ingredients For the burgers: • 500g lean pork mince • 6 spring onions, very finely chopped • 2 tablespoons chipotle paste • Finely grated zest of 1 lime and juice ½ lime • 4 tablespoons freshly chopped coriander • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • A little oil for brushing • 4 slices cheese
Pineapple salsa: • 175 g fresh pineapple rings, cut into 1cm cubes • ½ small red onion, very finely chopped • Grated zest and juice of 1 lime • 1 small red chilli, de-seeded and finely chopped (optional) • 2 tablespoons freshly chopped mint • 2 tablespoons freshly chopped coriander
Plus: Shredded crispy lettuce and 4 Super Soft Original Mission Deli Wraps to serve Method: Place the mince in a large bowl with the spring onion, chipotle paste, lime zest and juice and coriander. Season well and using your hands squash the mixture together until all the ingredients are combined. Divide the mixture into four, even sized balls, then flatten to make four burgers. Chill for 15 minutes. Meanwhile make the salsa by placing all the ingredients in a bowl and mixing together. Chill until ready to use. Brush the burgers with a little oil, then cook on the barbecue for 4-5 minutes each side, until thoroughly cooked through. Place a slice of cheese on top of each burger and allow to melt slightly. Griddle the tortillas for 20 seconds on each side, then fold into triangles to make a pocket. Fill with lettuce then top with a burger and the pineapple salsa. Serve immediately. REAL LIFE STORIES
Tom Milner talks to a Darlington born businesswoman and a musical mother and daughter duo who are both pursuing their creative dreams…
KEEPING IT IN THE FAMILY
BLOOMING IN THE BIG CITY
There is a saying that the family who play together, stay together, and Darlington resident Edwina Bryant and her daughter Amelia Bryant are proving that this is absolutely true.
When Joanne Lambell departed Darlington for London, she had little idea that over fifteen years later she would be leaving her job as a regional manager and pursuing her dream of floristry, starting up her own successful, innovative business.
Edwina, a teacher at St Bede’s Primary School, has played cello since her childhood, and now 13-year-old Amelia is following in her footsteps as the two play together in the Darlington Orchestra.
However, her unique range of postal flowers, Beards and Daisies, has delivered the goods and recently earned her praise from one of the country’s leading newspapers.
Edwina joined around ten years ago: “I started playing cello while I was at school, but playing in an orchestra it came to a bit of a halt when I had children. “However, I started to miss the community feel of playing in a group that I’d experienced in the past. Luckily, I found that here at the Darlington Orchestra,” she said. She is now the leader of the cello section, of which her daughter is also a member. Amelia, who has been playing in the orchestra for two years, is among the youngest taking part, although her mother hopes that could soon change. “There are a few more younger members joining, including someone else the same age as Amelia and some just a couple of years older,” she said. “It’s great to see them coming along and enjoying themselves. We’d love more youngsters to join.” Amelia, who attends Carmel College, said that she had always wanted to play the cello from a very young age and is now delighted to be playing with her mother in the orchestra. When asked about what it is like to have her daughter under her guidance in the cello section, Edwina joked: “It depends if it’s a good day or a bad day!”
She did say, however, that it has brought them closer together: “It does give us an extra shared passion to discuss and enjoy together and means I can help Amelia if she has any difficulties with the music.” The orchestra rehearses on Tuesday evenings during school term time at the St Thomas Aquinas Church Hall, playing a wide variety of music, which Edwina cited as part of the reason she initially joined. They also welcome a range of instruments, currently consisting of everything from the cello to the tuba. For anyone wanting to see the Darlington Orchestra in action, they usually play two concerts a year; one in the summer, and one in January. Their next concert is scheduled for July 2. For more information about the Darlington Orchestra, call 01325 251383, email admin@darlington-orchestra. org.uk, or visit darlington-orchestra.org.uk.
Joanne grew up in Darlington but moved to the capital to attend university. “I worked my socks off in various part time jobs to make sure I could pursue my dream of living in London,” she said. “After university though I struggled to settle into the city’s corporate environment and was desperate to be doing something more creative.” In her mid 30’s Joanne decided on a career change and left the job where she felt like “a square peg in a round hole” to pursue her dreams of running a creative, floral business. “People laughed when I said I was going to ‘flower school’,” she admits, “but I surrounded myself with some fantastic wedding and events florists and learnt a great deal.” It was Joanne’s links to Darlington that helped sow the seeds of her business idea. “I remember trying to send some flowers up to my mum, who still lives in Darlington as I couldn’t be there in person,” she said. “The flowers themselves were nice but I felt a bit underwhelmed by the whole gifting experience and I wished there was a way to make it a little more special.”
opening a present.” Through her new business, Beards and Daisies, bouquets are wrapped in ribbon with a personalised greeting card and delivered in beautiful boxes that fit perfectly through a standard letterbox. When asked about the company name, Beards and Daisies, Joanne revealed: “It came about after I was planning the flowers for my sister’s wedding, which was taking place in a beautiful garden, hence the daisies. “Most of the men on her fiancé’s side of the family had a beard, so I joked that the theme of the arrangement was beards and daisies. I quite liked the ring of it and it just kind of stuck. I thought it was fun, quirky and memorable.” Indeed, it has caught the eye of national newspaper The Independent, who listed Beards and Daisies’ The Lovebird bouquet among their 15 Best Rose selections this Valentine’s Day, and more recently The Osprey by Beards and Daisies featured in the same newspaper’s 13 Best Flowers for Mother’s Day. “I was absolutely thrilled to be listed,” said Joanne. “To be nominated on our first Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day was an honour. Orders skyrocketed and it was a great learning curve for us.” While Joanne remembers her time in Darlington fondly, she has no regrets about taking on the city and is now urging other Darlington Today readers to follow their dreams. “Taking the leap to change career was the best thing I ever did,” she said, “even the 4am starts to get to the flower market were absolutely worth it.” For more information visit www. beardsand daisies.co.uk
From this experience bloomed Joanne’s idea for letterbox flowers, that would make receiving bouquets “as magical as
