Managing Director Bill Abbott was delighted with the firm’s financial results for yearend December 31, 2015.
Two students have been putting their skills to the test with some hands-on experience after setting their sights on a career in quantity surveying. Both teenagers hope to work as quantity surveyors when they complete their studies, and have spent time working on the

The introduction of a tax on carrier bags has had an instant impact on recycling rates with people now more conscious of reusing their old bags rather than having to pay for new ones. NEW MUSEUM GALLERY RECALLS THE BOMBARDMENT OF THE HARTLEPOOLS A new permanent exhibition on the Bombardment of the Hartlepools in the First World War opened in December 2015; on the 101st anniversary of the attack. The exhibition opened at the Museum of Hartlepool, at Hartlepool’s Maritime Experience. The museum is open daily, from 11am to 4pm and entry is free. On the morning of 16th December 1914, the town made national and international headlines when German warships fired more than a thousand shells on the Hartlepools, killing 130 civilians and military personnel and wounding more than 500. The Heugh Gun Battery returned fire in what was the only battle fought on British soil during the First World War. One of the Battery’s soldiers, Theo Jones of the Durham Light Infantry, became the first British soldier killed by enemy action on home ground.

Highlights of the new exhibition include: • An audio-visual presentation narrated by North-East broadcaster and historian John Grundy. The presentation includes recently-discovered photographs and archival footage of the day’s events and its aftermath. • 130 ceramic poppies which formed part of the artwork, ‘Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red’ at the Tower of London, alongside a roll of honour naming the 130 people they represent who died in the Bombardment.
Bombardment Clock ©HBC 2014
• The return of the iconic ‘Bombardment Clock’, which stopped when it was pierced by a shell fragment, and James Clark’s oil painting, ‘The Bombardment of the Hartlepools’. Mark Simmons the Museum Manager said; “this is the best interpretation of the Bombardment and Hartlepool’s role in the wider war that the museum has ever had. Previously, First World War artefacts were among the other exhibits, so it’s nice that they now have their own dedicated space, telling the full story in a fresh, powerful and memorable way.”
AFTERNOON TEA, ANYONE? Head Chef Steve Smith of Michelin Star Bohemia Restaurant has shared his Hedgerow Jam and delicious fruit scone recipe created for the hotel’s Bohemian Afternoon Tea Collection. Head Chef Steve Smith @ Bohemia has held a Michelin Star for over 10 years from the age of just 24. Steve has enjoyed a spectacular year being named Catey Chef of the Year 2014, retaining Bohemia’s Michelin Star, being awarded 4AA Rosettes, as well as being listed in The Sunday Times Top 100 Restaurants, with special praise being given to Bohemia’s desserts which were listed ‘6th Best in the UK’.
Steve Smith’s Hedgerow Jam Ingredients 2kg Wild Fruits (Sloes, Bilberries, Blackberries, Elderberries, Rosehips) 2 Cooking Apples Water Sugar Method Remove any stalks and dry leaves from the fruits. Cut the apples into quarters. Put the fruits into a stainless steel pan and cover with water. Simmer until soft for about 30 minutes. Unlike other jams and preserves this needs to be sieved to remove seeds and pips. Force through a sieve and weigh the pulp. Transfer to a clean saucepan and add an equal weight of sugar. Bring to a boil stirring to dissolve sugar and cook over a high heat until jam reaches setting point (105°c). Remove from the heat and leave to cool for 20 minutes. Then ladle into, warm sterilised jars to within ¼ of the rim. Wipe off any sticky drops with a hot damp cloth. Place a wax paper disc onto the jam surface to seal. Cover the mouth of the jar with cellophane, fastened with an elastic band.

SNUG AS A BUG Fashionable fixes for keeping your child warm this winter They tear them, stain them and spill all manner of food on them – in fact you name it, kids will ruin their clothes just by being kids. When it comes to replacing their worn out wear it’s all about finding something that they love, but also ticks all your practicality boxes too. Here are our top tips to help youngsters stay snug and stylish all season long. Love those layers: With the British weather as changeable as ever, layers will ensure your child is appropriately dressed no matter how many seasons each day holds. Try pairing long sleeved t-shirts with jumpers, cardigans or even a gilet so they have the option to remove one layer if the temperature climbs or they venture indoors. Get your coat, you’ve played: It’s not always easy to get your child to cover up but, with so many amazing coats on the market, chances are they will find
one they love. From waterproofs with detachable hoods to fancy fur covered creations there’s a whole range of affordable options on offer – we’ll just keep our fingers crossed that you don’t have to chase them around to get them on. Don’t forget the fun: Winter clothing needs to be practical but there’s no reason it can’t be fun, too. Try to find items featuring their favourite characters or opt for bright colours which are more likely to stay on and less likely to get lost at the back of the cupboard. Start with the shoes: Strong footwear is the foundation to any great outfit and, when it comes to kids, we know it needs to be comfortable, and practical, too. This time of year its worthwhile investing in a good pair of snow boots or even wellies, just remember to check they have a good, strong sole and thick tread in case Jack Frost comes nipping at their toes.

Always accessorise: Scarves, hats and gloves are a must at this time of year. Many stores are now selling matching sets which enhance the look and keep costs down but, if you’d prefer, go for a mix and match or maybe even knit one of your own. It’s all in the jeans: Dark denim is a wardrobe staple for young people this winter. It’s durable, doesn’t show stains and does offer some protection against the elements –just be aware that if it gets extremely wet it can start to rub and will take a long time to dry, so best pack a change of clothes just in case. As an alternative try cords, cargo pants, leggings or extra thick tights.

Dentures: from the Etruscans to Implants and Digital Dentistry. Colin Caster, Managing Director of City Dental, explains how their team uses cutting edge technology to produce state of the art dentures. Dentures or ‘false teeth’ are prostheses constructed to replace missing teeth. The first recorded dentures were produced by the Etruscans in Northern Italy and made from human or animal teeth circa 500BC. Human anatomy has evolved very little, thankfully however modern materials and techniques have. Modern dentures are produced in a dental laboratory under dentist prescription or by a Clinical Dental Technician; a dental team member qualified as a dental technician then further qualified to carry out the clinical aspects of denture construction. The process involves primary impressions to make special trays fitting the patient’s mouth accurately achieving a much more detailed secondary impression to produce a master model. Wax rims and bases are produced to allow the clinician to check several key points: fit, facial seal, the occlusion (how the patient bites together), facial aesthetics,
the position, size, shape and shade of the teeth to be used to give the most natural appearance.
be restored immediately in some cases or left to integrate for a short period and then restored.
Next a wax ‘try-in’ using the chosen teeth. At this stage the phonetics are checked to ensure the patient speaks normally with their new teeth, if adjustments are necessary alterations are made and a ‘re-try’ carried out.
There are a variety of restorations replacing one missing tooth to a full arch of teeth which are ‘fixed in place’ giving the patient the closest thing to having natural teeth. Implants can be used to stabilise dentures giving patients the best of both worlds where dentures are held firmly in place but can be removed for easy cleaning.
The dentures are finished once the patient is completely satisfied. The dentures are finished in the most modern advanced acrylics. Once fitted the patient attends a review programme to ensure they are completely at ease with their new teeth.
Modern implant technology allows patients who have previously lost some or all of their teeth to have them replaced using implants to support their new teeth. Anything from a single tooth to a full set of dentures can be replaced using implants for support. An x-ray or CT scan is taken to ensure there is sufficient available bone and indicate the position of nerves and other structures which need to be avoided when placing the implants. An implant surgeon carries out a surgical procedure to place the implants into the jaw bone. Implants can
Digital dentistry is used to plan accurate implant placement. Then in the dental laboratory a computer is used to scan the implants and a computer is used to design the frameworks (CADCAM). The framework is then milled from the material of choice Titanium or Zirconia with amazing accuracy, about 4 microns which provides a superb fit onto the implants. The frameworks are then used to either carry the denture teeth which are processed onto the framework or porcelain teeth are built up directly onto the Zirconia framework to complete the process.

OUR EARLY YEARS MAKE SUCH A DIFFERENCE TO THE PERSON WE GROW UP TO BE every child so that their individual talents emerge and develop. By retaining smaller classes, children feel more secure about contributing.
At Red House School we keep the whole journey in mind. Our experience shows that a well-rounded education, filled with co-curricular activities, leads to so much more than academic success. Children discover the confidence to grasp the opportunities that life will present beyond the classroom. Of course academic success matters and our record backs that up, but at Red House we believe that exam results are not the sole indicator of a child’s capabilities. That is why we create a positive and supportive environment where children are nurtured to achieve their full potential, not only academically, but in all aspects of school life. Indeed, we know that academic improvement often stems from the self-belief found in sport, music, theatre or travel. Our school ethos is built around giving children a complete education: physical, intellectual and emotional development gained from a wide range of experiences within a broad and balanced curriculum. We encourage parents to become involved in their child’s education, weaving a close-knit community among teachers, children and parents, so that the best results are achieved. We also understand the daily demands faced by parents so at Red House School we try and alleviate these by providing a bus service, which is a safe and reliable way of getting children to school. We also understand the predicament which many parents face during the School Holidays, therefore we keep our doors open and provide a stimulating and exciting Holiday Club for children that attend the Nursery & Infant School and a Sports Camp for pupils attending the Prep & Senior School. Parents are happy in the knowledge that their child is in an environment that is familiar, with a variety of fun activities
taking place. We also provide excellent Wrap Around Care during term time from 7.30 am to 6.00 pm. This is very beneficial for children whose parents require an extended day. The Wrap Around Care is very flexible and can be booked on an ad hoc basis to suit parents needs. The best way to experience life at Red House is to visit the school. Tours are available throughout the year. Appointments can be made by contacting Mrs Claire Bellerby, Head of Admissions on 01642 558119 or email claire.bellerby@redhouseschool.co.uk.

TAKE TO THE SKIES FROM DURHAM TEES VALLEY Your guide to holiday hotspots for the half term and beyond It may not seem long since they went back to school but February does welcome the first of this year’s academic breaks - sorry parents!
Venture outside the urban sprawl and you will find more to explore, including the wonderful walks along the coast, as well as countless castles and dozens of distilleries.
If you’re already panicking about how to keep your youngsters entertained during this half term week - and the many holidays yet to follow - then a family getaway could be just what you need.
If you fancy something a little more remote, then Eastern Airways also offers visitors easy access to a number of other, arguably quieter Scottish destinations.
Start your journey at Durham Tees Valley Airport, located just six miles from Darlington on the A67, and in no time at all you could be seeing the sights in Sydney or swimming in a Scottish Loch. Don’t worry, teachers, we know you need a holiday too, and there are plenty of destinations on offer from this local airport to help make the most of your hard earned break. We put our head in the clouds, quite literally, to explore just some of them…
Soar in to Scotland: Eastern Airways operates at least three flights every day direct from Durham Tees Valley Airport to Aberdeen. This stunning Scottish city, dating back more than 8000 years, has much to offer in the way of pristine parks, spectacular shopping and amazing architecture, with plenty to keep visitors of all ages entertained.
These include the Northern Highland regions of Wick and John O’Groats, boasting unspoilt beaches and spectacular scenery, as well as Stornoway in the Western Isles.
Nip to Norway: Spend the day in Norway’s second largest city, Bergen, feast your eyes on two of the country’s most spectacular fjords – Hardangerfjord and Sognefjord – and you’ll soon understand why the area was awarded World Heritage site status. Alternatively, why not take a stroll through the old town of Stavanger, surrounded by beaches, mountains and pleasing pockets of culture – just don’t blame us if it’s hard to tear yourself away. Both Bergen and Stavanger are easy to reach from Durham Tees Valley Airports with flights once again being offered by Eastern Airways.
Explore the exotic: It might not be the most obvious choice for a quick half term jaunt, but if you’re willing to push through the jet lag then a far flung vacation is still within reach. Hop on board one of KLM’s three daily flights from Durham Tees Valley to Amsterdam and within 80 relaxing minutes you’ll be at the gateway to the rest of the globe. From there you can continue your journey to more than 200 wonderful, worldwide destinations, including Sydney, Cape Town, Bangkok and Cairo. Why not live it up in the Big Apple for a week and explore landmarks such as the Empire State Building, Brooklyn Bridge or the Statute of Liberty? Or spend the school holidays discovering the ancient temples and trendy shopping districts of Tokyo, Japan? For more information and to see a full list of destinations from Durham Tees Valley Airport please visit www.durhamteesvalleyairport.com, where you will also find additional links and booking options.
