A NEON FUTURE A local artist has secured funding through Arts Council England to develop new neon artworks. Stuart Langley will spend 5 months learning to create gas filled glass neons and showcase three new artworks at galleries and events in the region later this year. ‘Neon is such an amazing medium that’s been around for over 100 years. Most people will be familiar with neon having seen it used as signage but i really want to turn it on its head and create pieces never seen before’, Stuart said. Having already created pieces of light art for Lumiere Durham, Nuit Blanche Brussels and ilight Singapore amongst others, Stuart hopes to brighten the region with a tour of his neon artworks. You can see the artworks for yourself when they make an appearance at the Headland’s Wintertide Festival 26 - 27 November and Hartlepool Art Gallery in January 2017. 4 | Hartlepool Today

HAUNTED HARTLEPOOL & EAST DURHAM A book published by The History Press reveals the true depth and extent of the area’s paranormal and haunted legacy. Former Hartlepool Mail journalist Paul Screeton has, over the years, recorded and investigated paranormal events from all over the Hartlepool & East Durham area, and even experienced his own terrifying brush with the supernatural. Ghostly goings-on have been reported at Hartlepool’s houses, clubs, schools, roads, ships and even a former airport. Pubs figure widely, and one local brewery is a veritable hive of paranormal activity. The mining landscape of East Durham is also host to countless spectres, from Arthurian spirits, drunk ghosts, giant cats and even UFOs.
We have five copies of this chilling book to give away to our readers. All you have to do to win a copy is answer the following question: Who is the author of Haunted Hartlepool & East Durham? Closing date for entries is 4 May. See foot of page 21 for entry details.

NORTH EAST TEEN BRINGS UK RAPPER TO THE REGION An entrepreneurial youngster from the North East is behind one of the UK’s leading urban artists visiting the region for a one-off concert. Rapper Wretch 32 will be performing at Newcastle’s O2 Academy on April 30 for one of his first performances in over two years – and it’s all down to the work of 19-year old Jason Blackburn. The Hartlepool-born youngster, who has already had success in his teenage years playing for Carlisle United FC, decided to turn his hand to the music industry and begin attracting more international stars to the region. Jason, who also works part-time as a gym instructor, said: “I am always thinking of the next idea and what I can do that will attract attention to the region. “Setting up my own business and turning my attention to music is really what I’m passionate about. “I started with a concert in my own hometown of Hartlepool last year and realised that with the correct formula of putting these events together I could put on more around the North East.” Jason began by researching Wretch 32 and contacting his agent to explore the possibility of putting on an event. After getting the green light, he secured the O2 Academy and began promoting the event.
Supporting Wretch 32 are acts Bugzy Malone and Ex on the Beach’s Ashley Cain. Jason added: “Ticket sales are already going well so I’d urge anyone who’s interested to book up fast before they all sell out. “This is a one off event from the artist and not to be missed after his previous performances at Wireless Festival and Space in Ibiza.” The inspiring youth already has his sights set on more new acts to bring to the region and is in talks with a number of management companies. Jason said: “Music is something me and my friends really enjoy, I’m always texting them with various acts to get their feedback and whether they would go to see them. “I’m hoping to put on my next event in Middlesbrough with a well-known DJ, but can’t say too much at the moment.” Jason also runs Storm Property Solutions, a Hartlepool company that works to buy property within the town whilst dealing directly with sellers to make sure residents are getting the best price possible for their homes. MORE THAN BRICKS AND MORTAR If home is where the heart is then you are sure to fall head over heels for these palatial pads… Whether you live in a country mansion or a terraced, two up two down, chances are you will soon be embarking on the annual spring clean. This Easter why not take a break from all that mowing and dusting to visit one of the North East’s historic homes and gardens? You may find them to be a source of inspiration or, at the very least, a place where you and the family can enjoy a whole host of fun.
Eggleston Hall, Eggleston, Barnard Castle
Thornton Hall Gardens, Darlington
www.egglestonhall.co.uk
Now a Grade 1 listed building, Thornton Hall at Staindrop Road, was built by Ralph Tailbois around 1550. Originally there were three distinct walled gardens, with Elizabethan raised borders and an avenue of lime trees marking the entrance.
There has been a house on this site since the 1600s and, while the privately-owned property itself is not open to the public, its 16th century gardens are a popular Teesdale tourist attraction. The four acre Walled Gardens, which open seven days a week all year round, boast a variety of rare and unusual species with an emphasis on hardy, herbaceous stock that can thrive in the climate of the northern dales. Many of its features date back to Victorian times, with a guided garden walk also offering access to the original village church and church yard nearby. When it’s time to take a break, the adjoining Coach House Tea Room offers an array of light meals and snacks, while the plant nursery and shop gives visitors the chance to take a little piece of the garden home.
Raby Castle, Staindrop www.rabycastle.com As one of the best preserved castles in North East England, Lord Barnard’s home offers more than 600 years of history and a glimpse of life through the ages. Explore the wonderful rooms of the castle, with an amazing art collection and architecture spanning the Medieval, Victorian, Georgian and Regency periods, or take a quiet walk through the picturesque walled gardens dating back to the 18th century. If the garden’s yew hedges, trees and plants don’t offer enough greenery, then there’s always the 200 acre deer park, which is teeming with wildlife including its namesake red and fallow deer.

Over the years these gardens were repurposed and, at the time current owners Mike and Sue Manners moved in, were being used as paddocks for grazing cattle and sheep. In a labour of love, Sue has gradually transformed one of the gardens to its former glory and now opens it to the public on selected dates throughout the year. Open days for 2016 include May 30 and June 15, 22 and 26.
Richmond Castle, Richmond www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/ richmond-castle/ Originally built to subdue the unruly north of England, Richmond Castle is one of the best examples of a Norman fortress still standing in Britain today. All but one of the hilltop buildings date back to medieval times and all cluster around a large central grassed area with magnificent views over the river a hundred feet below. The site’s main garden, which sits outside the castle walls, was added in 2000 and now boasts a mix of wild and cultivated flowers, trees, benches and grassy picnic areas spanning just over an acre.

The 13th century hall, which now attracts visitors from around the world, provides the perfect backdrop to the stunning gardens, which are split into several key areas.
As well as providing an academic resource to Durham University, the garden is also open to the general public and welcomes visitors of all ages throughout the year.
This includes the Secret Walled Garden, Shakespeare Garden and Cathedral Garden, as well as a moat pool and maze.
Why not take wander through the alpine garden, glance around the bamboo grove or stop for a moment in the wildflower meadow?
While some elements of the garden have stood for centuries, others are relatively new additions and all offer hours of fun for the whole family.
Alternatively you can try your hand at woodwork on April 24 and a variety of other skills in activities running throughout the year.
Key events planned at the attraction in the coming months include Fairy Tale Week from May 29.
Kiplin Hall, near Scorton, North Yorkshire www.kiplinhall.co.uk This intriguing property, built as a hunting lodge by Secretary of State, George Calvert in the early 1620s, is currently furnished as a comfortable, Victorian home, with 17 rooms open to public viewing. Interior highlights include an eclectic mix of furniture and personal items from the four families who previously occupied the hall, as well as numerous paintings from the 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Kiplin Hall’s Gardens, which are currently undergoing a major restoration, include an 18th century walled garden, mile-long riverside walk and peninsula wood, as well as family areas with wooden games such as croquet.
Thorp Perrow Arboretum, Bedale www.thorpperrow.com/gardens.html Situated in the Yorkshire Dales, Thorp Perrow Arboretum is one of the finest private collections of trees and shrubs in the UK. Unique to Britain, if not Europe, this 100 acre site was created by Colonel Sir Leonard Ropner (1895 – 1977) and is now open to the public all year round. In the spring, visitors can enjoy one of the most extensive plantings of daffodils in the north of England, with carpets of bluebells and bold drifts of wild flowers following in early summer.
le Scrope, the castle is now popular for family days out, educational trips and historic tours, with opportunities to find out more about medieval and Tudor life in events running throughout the year.
Wynyard Hall, Wynyard www.wynyardhall.co.uk Following its initial lease by King Edward I to Sir Hugh de Chapell in 1230, several prominent families owned the Wynyard Estate before it was sold to Sir John Hall in 1987. Sir John, who also once owned Newcastle Football Club, spent more than £12m restoring the hall to its former glory and transforming it into the four-star country house hotel that operates today. Further extensive investment in 2015 included the creation of a Walled Garden, boasting more than 3000 roses, as well as a Visitor Centre with a café and farm shop. Both the Hall and Gardens now play host to regular events, including cooking classes, walks and afternoon teas.

RED HOUSE SCHOOL OFFERS SO MUCH MORE THAN ACADEMIC SUCCESS. There was widespread coverage in the press recently on new research by the Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring (CEM) at Durham University. The research commissioned by the Independent Schools Council (ISC) revealed that attending an independent school in England is associated with the equivalent of two additional years of schooling by the age of 16. This data is reflected in our remarkable 2015 GCSE results and our first place ranking as No.1 independent school in the area in the Department for Education Performance Tables. However, what makes Red House truly unique is the renowned ethos and spirit of the School. This nurturing environment allows us to capture and develop the intrinsic curiosity and love of learning of each child right across the School enabling us to offer a truly
bespoke education. Our fees remain lower than any other independent school in the area. Our small class sizes ensure our teachers are able to develop confidence and individuality, not only for academic excellence, but as preparation to exceed throughout life. The best way to appreciate the friendly ethos of Red House School is to experience it first-hand. Our Headmaster, Mr Taylor, and our Head of Nursery & Infant School, Jo Everington, along with all the teaching staff would like to personally welcome you to our Open Morning on Saturday 7th May 2016 10 am – 1 pm. The Open Morning is a great opportunity to experience life at Red House and to see what our school can offer your child.

FASHION FROM THE FLAG Wear your style with pride this St George’s Day (April 23) and pay homage to England’s patron saint in your finest shades of red and white. While we couldn’t possibly comment on St George’s own 4th century fashion sense, his associated colours – still displayed on the English flag – are more than evident on the modern high street. We’re painting this issue’s fashion pages red (and white) in tribute to the muchloved martyr – and fingers crossed we can wear it all again during England’s UEFA EURO 2016 campaign this summer too.

CATCHING THE BEST OF BRITISH
Beetroot, British Asparagus & Smoked Salmon Salad with a Pepper Dressing
If you’re feeling suitably patriotic after reading our St George’s Day fashion feature on page 15, then you’ll love these fine fish dishes showcasing the best of British cuisine.
Courtesy of lovebeetroot.co.uk serves 2
Beer Battered Fish with Minted Peas Created by TV chef Rachel Green on behalf of the Yes Peas! Campaign - serves 4 Ingredients For the fish: Vegetable oil 4 x 180g pieces skinless white fish 2 tsp baking powder 300g plain flour 400ml very chilled beer or ice cold sparkling water Freshly ground sea salt For the minted peas: 350g frozen peas 4 tbsp. double cream 30g butter 1 tbsp. fresh mint, chopped or 2/3 tsp mint concentrate Sea salt and black pepper
Method
Ingredients:
In a bowl, stir the baking powder into the flour and season with sea salt then quickly whisk in the cold beer or sparkling water until you have a thick paste. This needs to be done just before you cook the fish.
For the salad: 1 pack (approx. 125g) British asparagus tips 135g watercress and salad leaves 100g smoked salmon 2 cooked beetroot dipped in vinegar (not pickled), cut into eighths
Heat the oil in a large pan or deep fat fryer to approximately 185°. Dip the fish into the batter and carefully lower into the oil, making sure it doesn’t stick. Cook the fish, one or two pieces at a time, for 4-6 minutes each, until crisp and golden. Lift from the oil and drain on kitchen paper before repeating the process with the remaining pieces. To make the minted mushy peas; bring a pan of salted water to the boil and add the frozen peas, cook gently for 3 minutes or until tender. Drain the peas and transfer to a blender, add the cream, butter, mint and season with sea salt and black pepper. Blend the ingredients together until it has a thick texture with small pieces of peas still remaining, then place in a small saucepan and reheat. Serve the fish and minted peas with, chunky chips, lemon wedges, tartare sauce and vinegar.
For the dressing: 3 tbsp. horseradish cream 2 tbsp. Rachel’s Organic Natural Yogurt 1 tsp white wine vinegar Black pepper to season 1 lemon, juiced What to do: Place the British asparagus tips into a pan of boiling water and cook for 3-4 minutes. Assemble the salad leaves and watercress onto two small plates and lay on the smoked salmon. Add the beetroot to the salad, then drain the British asparagus tips and lay on top. Finally mix the dressing ingredients together and drizzle over the salad with lots of black pepper to season. Finish with the lemon juice. Hartlepool Today | 19
