LOCALNEWS PRAISE FOR HIGH TECH BUSINESSES LEADING DIGITAL GROWTH MIDDLESBROUGH’S thriving high tech digital economy is the breeding ground for the “Bolckow and Vaughan” of the 21st Century, according to Mayor Dave Budd. Praise has been given to the growing multi-million pound Boho sector which provides employment for around 1,000 people as Mr Budd also declared the term “Over the Border” as a “thing of the past”. And, just as Henry Bolckow and John Vaughan changed the world with iron and steel, Middlesbrough’s digital businesses are now doing the same in the creative and high-tech sectors. The Boho Zone was put under the spotlight by BBC Tees in a three hour broadcast from Boho One – behind Middlesbrough Railway Station – with presenter Mike Parr. Mr Budd joined digital business leaders in a panel discussion on the growth sector and why, when they could be in London or Silicon Valley, multimillion pound businesses are opening and staying in Middlesbrough. Middlesbrough Mayor Dave Budd said: “There are now probably a thousand jobs in this area. It is a huge part of the future of Middlesbrough – there isn’t just one thing but this is hugely, hugely important. “The term ‘Over the Border’ is a thing of the past, it’s a generational thing. “I make no apology for repeating myself but we need to think of Middlesbrough centre not as a town but as the economic city heart of the Tees Valley city region. “You could say that two of these people you are talking to this morning are the new Bolckow and Vaughan, things have moved on – that always gets a smile but why not?”

Middlesbrough Mayor Dave Budd (R) being interviewed by BBC Tees’ Mike Parr at Boho 1 alongside digital business leaders.

Bob Makin, CEO of games developers Sockmonkey Studios said: “There has been a lot of games development in Middlesbrough historically – NBA Jam was made here which is one of the biggest games of all time. “The think about Middlesbrough is we have the countryside, all the local aspects, but we have good internet speeds so we have been working with people in San Francisco online and it doesn’t make a difference now where you work – you can work with people all over the world.” Animmersion Managing Director Dominic Lusardi added: “It’s fantastic, 10 years ago we started out on a dream of seeing a digital cluster develop and we can see the fruits of these labours. We have a full building with lots of different digital businesses here and we are so proud to be here and be involved in the growth of this digital cluster.” The programme can be listened to again here http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p05kpxgq

WORKS WELL UNDERWAY ON ALI BROWNLEE TRIBUTE MURAL

The view of the Ali Brownlee tribute mural on Shepherdson Way as you exit the underpass opposite Hudson Quay

WORKS to turn one of ‘Voice of the Boro’ Ali Brownlee’s most famous commentaries into a piece of public poetry are now well underway. Fans heading to the Riverside Stadium for the clash between Middlesbrough and Cardiff City will be greeted by the sight of the outline of much of the mural on Shepherdson Way. Teesside-based sign writer Phil Anderson has been carrying out the painstaking work in all weathers. When complete, Ali’s commentary from the final whistle of the 2006 UEFA Cup semi-final between Boro and Steaua Bucharest will stand at 40 metres long and two-and-a-half metres high. And while currently fans can only see white paint on the wall, the finished version will contain a splash of colour. Middlesbrough Mayor Dave Budd said: “Ali’s commentaries were anything but monochrome and this mural will reflect that as a tribute to him. “This idea has been in the pipeline for a little while so it’s great to see it finally coming together and already it is striking as you approach the

4 | Middlesbrough Today

stadium and it is well worth a small detour for supporters before or after the game to see how it’s coming along.” Sign writer Phil Anderson added: “The mural requires three layers of paint to stand out the way we want it to and it is quite painstaking work, it’s hard to appreciate the scale of the piece until you actually have a brush in your hand and are working on it. “Fortunately the weather so far hasn’t been too unkind and there’s been a lot of people passing by who’ve stopped to appreciate how it is coming on which has been nice.” The tribute to Ali is a joint project between Middlesbrough Council and Middlesbrough Football Club and is a special addition to the ongoing public poetry scheme in Middlesbrough. The Council launched its public poetry scheme earlier this year and there are now three prominent pieces in the town centre on Baker Street, Bedford Street and King Edward’s Square. The Ali Brownlee wall mural will read: “That is it. It’s Eindhoven. It’s Eindhoven. Boro have made it. One of the most glorious nights in the history of football. We go back to 1876, the Infant Hercules, fathomed out of the foundries of Teesside, mined out of the Eston Hills, we’re roaring all the way to Eindhoven and the UEFA Cup Final. It’s party, party, party! Everybody round my house for a parmo!”

MIDDLESBROUGH PRAISED BY LEADING ARTS CHIEF MIDDLESBROUGH is a “hotbed of creativity” – says the country’s number one arts and culture impresario. Arts Council Chief Executive Darren Henley visited Middlesbrough to meet Mayor Dave Budd to discuss the town’s ambitious plans for the future and to see for himself mima and the restoration of Middlesbrough Town Hall. Mr Henley described the “internationally renowned” modern art gallery as “absolutely fantastic” and said he was “really excited” about the Town Hall works. Earlier this year Arts Council England announced that the Town Hall would receive £1m over four years once the venue reopens next spring. The money comes from the Arts Council’s National Portfolio funding programme for organisations to deliver arts and cultural activity. Mr Henley said: “It’s great to be here in Middlesbrough – a hotbed of creativity, some really exciting arts and culture activities happening right across the town. “We are really excited about the work the Arts Council has done to invest a lot of money into Middlesbrough Town Hall and seeing the building work there and of course mima which is absolutely fantastic, internationally renowned and something that we at Arts Council England are very, very proud to invest money in.” Middlesbrough Mayor Dave Budd added: “It was great to welcome Darren to Middlesbrough again and to discuss some of the really positive arts and culture things we have going on. “We have huge ambitions for Middlesbrough with our investment plans and culture and heritage will play a major role in our future.”

SEAN’S ART GIVES CHRISTMAS A FESTIVE BORO TWIST AN artist’s unique view of Middlesbrough’s buildings and landmarks has been given a festive twist in the run-up to Christmas. Sean Sims’ striking images have already won plaudits after they were used on hoardings erected during the Heritage Lottery Fund refurbishment of the town Hall. The colourful depictions capture the town’s distinctive skyline, ranging from some of Middlesbrough’s oldest buildings to more modern additions. And now Sean’s ‘dream commission’ has been given a decidedly wintry makeover, with the townscapes wreathed in snow and seasonal decorations as the Yuletide countdown begins in earnest. The Magical Middlesbrough Christmas illustrations will be used to promote the Council’s festive activity around the town. Sean, who was born in Warren Street and grew up in Acklam, said he’d jumped at the opportunity to pay a personal tribute to the cityscapes that had provided the backcloth to his formative years. The 53-year-old, who has also worked with the likes of The Guardian, Virgin, TUI Thompson Airlines and the

Sean’s Magical Middlesbrough Christmas artworks, featuring well-known local buildings and landmarks

BBC, said: “I grew up in Middlesbrough, it’s my home town and my heart is still here. “As a town it’s got everything, it’s a pot of all sorts, so when I was asked to illustrate the shutters for the Palladium Shops, it was a commission I couldn’t turn down. “It’s all about creating a positive image of the town that will be recognisable to anyone who knows and loves it, from the town centre out to the countryside and the coast. “People in Middlesbrough are very proud of their town and all the elements that make it such a unique place. “Middlesbrough’s really on the up at the moment, and it’s a privilege to be part of that process.” Sean Sims is available for commissioned work – to find out more, contact him at sean-sims@hotmail.com

NEW FOUR LEGGED TEAM MEMBER AT MIDDLESBROUGH SCHOOL MEET Elsie – the newest member of the pastoral team at Newport Primary School. The five-month-old golden retriever has joined the team at the Middlesbrough primary on St Paul’s Road and is already having a hugely positive influence on pupils having been brought to the school to be trained as a ‘therapy dog’. Elsie lives with Head Teacher Patricia McGill and cannot begin training until she is at least nine months old but is already going to the school regularly to acclimatise. Miss McGill said: “We try to find as many different ways as possible to work with our children pastorally. There is lots of research that shows that dogs just sitting with children as they read makes them more comfortable reading aloud.

“We think we are probably one of the first to bring a therapy dog into school locally but we know there are a couple of others schools considering doing it soon. “Staff, parents and all of the children are smitten with her already. She has also had a positive influence on our attendance which is at an all-time high.” The value of ‘pet therapy’ has in recent times become widely accepted as a powerful aid to stimulation and communication. Studies have shown that the presence of companion animals can improve the well-being of children and lower the rate of anxiety. There are also plans to have her trained to be a ‘reading dog’. Research shows that children can be nervous and stressed when reading to others in a group. Overcoming this fear and fostering a love of reading is seen as the first step on the way to improving literacy and dogs are viewed by many as a perfect way to do this. Research shows when dogs are in a room of children trying to read they become less stressed, less self-

Bistrot Pierre is already proving hugely popular while the Baker and Bedford Street scene is also on the Cleveland Centre’s doorstep. Further along the line new Grade A office space is planned for the east of Centre Square. Cleveland Centre manager Graham Skillen said: “We’re delighted to open our rooftop car park for Middlesbrough town centre’s increasing number of night-time visitors, especially during the busy festive period.” Cllr Charlie Rooney, Middlesbrough’s Deputy Mayor and Executive Member for City Centre Strategy, said: “Middlesbrough needs a thriving night time economy to sustain itself and grow further. Safe and secure parking in a key central location such as the Cleveland Centre is hugely important to that.”

Pamela Hargreaves from Water Babies Tees Valley, speaks to Middlesbrough Today about how to make sure your baby gets the best possible start in life. For many parents, their child’s first swimming lesson is a precious memory to treasure and a key milestone in their childhood. However over the years the question of ‘how early can you really start your baby swimming’ has continued to be a talking point. Pamela from Water Babies Tees Valley, who runs infant swimming classes at pools across Middlesbrough, said: “I’m really passionate about emphasising the importance of getting your little ones active as early as possible and the benefits of swimming for babies and parents alike”. “Swimming is a fantastic activity for babies as it exercises their whole body, helps to build stamina and stimulates all five of their senses. The NHS advises that babies can swim from birth, as long as the pool is warm enough, and I’ve have seen babies as young as 10 days old taking to the water.” “When a baby is born they already have a number of complex survival and involuntary natural reflexes which perfectly adapt them to the swimming pool environment. “Many people believe that babies are born with the ability to swim. Whilst this isn’t strictly true, they certainly do have a natural affinity for water due to the fact they’ve spent nine months floating in the womb. Being in warm water feels much more familiar to them than being on dry land.” Pamela encourages babies to begin swimming by around 12 weeks. She said: “After a year old their natural bodily reflexes begin to decrease, along with the infant’s natural confidence in the water, which is why we always say to our parents to begin baby swimming by around 12 weeks if they can, as not only will the classes, combined with the

parent’s involvement, help the child to learn life-saving techniques, it will also cause the least distress and set them up perfectly for future swimming lessons. “ Infant swimming has been proven to provide a number of physical, mental, and emotional benefits that enhance the ways babies and toddlers learn new skills. Children who swim as babies are on average around 17 months ahead for story recall, 20 months ahead for understanding directions and six months ahead in reading and mathematical reasoning. As well as improvements in physical strength, confidence and positive emotion, babies who swim have improved sleep patterns and appetites, typically walk earlier, and are on average, 11 months ahead in oral expression. Pamela said: “I experienced the effects myself when I attended classes with my daughter Alice from three months old. I just couldn’t believe what they were capable of doing at such a young age. “I was your typical scared-stiff Mother, I was terrified when our teacher said she’d be swimming Alice under water but it didn’t faze her at all, in fact I think she barely even noticed, which is a typical response. “By the time she was three Alice could swim a width of a 25m pool unaided, something I firmly believe all children should be given the opportunity to learn to do. “Involvement in the classes also doubled as a way for Alice and I to bond. Skinto-skin contact strengthens the bond between a parent and their little one,

8 | Darlington Today

and with mums generally having more bonding opportunities, classes are the perfect way for dads to spend some precious one-to-one time with their babies.”

What does a class involve? Water Babies Tees Valley works as a series of classes, split into chapters, designed to help your child progress throughout different stages. Pamela said: “Lessons with Water Babies are progressive, meaning that each lesson builds on the skills we teach the week before, and every week parents and little ones learn something new. It’s not just the same thing week in, week out. “It’s truly amazing how good little ones are at responding to both verbal and non-verbal cues. Ultimately they’ll learn to breathe out whilst they’re underwater, which we believe gives them real empowerment and a sense of being fully in control. “There is a core safety element to everything we do but our lessons are primarily about little ones developing confidence in the water and, most importantly, you and your ones having fun and enjoying the time in the water together.” Water Babies run classes at Priory Woods School, DW Fitness and Jury’s Inn, in Middlesbrough. To find out class times, or for more information about the sessions, visit www.waterbabies.co.uk/contact/teesvalley-and-north-york-moors or call 01642 711 734

FESTIVE FOOD AND A TIPPLE OR TWO... By Shannon Hodge

Shop ‘til you drop… If you’re braving the supermarket or the high street this Christmas, you won’t be disappointed… Everywhere from Iceland to Greggs has shelves upon shelves of mouth-watering seasonal goodies to sink your teeth into, including Santa’s favourite – mince pies… The Iceland Mince Pie selection pack (£2 for 6) was a huge hit here at Middlesbrough Today HQ, reduced to mere crumbs in record-time. However, another popular choice among the mince pie fiends in the office was Greggs’ Sweet Mince Pies (50p each, 6 for £1.75 or 12 for £3) which can be an easier option for those passing a Greggs on the countdown to Christmas. The mince pies were helpfully washed down with a glass of fizz from the new Barefoot Bubbly Pinot Grigio, available nationwide RRP £8.50 which was light, fresh and would go great with a Christmas day turkey. For the designated drivers among us, the Belvoir Fruit Farms Festive Fruit Punch, available online and at select independent retailers RRP £3.70 is an equally-enjoyable alternative. When it comes to Christmas dinner, everyone likes to impress. So, if it’s your turn to cook this year, allow us to introduce you to some yummy appetisers… For the fish lovers and pescatarians of the group, Iceland’s eight mini crab mac & cheese pots (£3.00 for 160g) are sure to please. 14 | Middlesbrough Today

‘Tis the season to eat, drink and be merry. So, to get you, your family and friends in the seasonal spirit, Middlesbrough Today’s little helpers have been hard at work testing this season’s tastiest food (and washing it down with a festive tipple or two) to make sure your cupboards and fridges are full to bursting with the newest, most delicious treats this Christmas.

Although, if you have guests with a larger appetite, then the Young’s, 2 Gastro Chunky Salmon Melt in the Middle Fishcakes RRP £2.50 may be a better option, as they’re creamy, rich and filling.

If fancy starters aren’t your forte and you’d rather stick to a good, hearty option, allow us to introduce you to a firm favourite among the men in the office – pie. If you’re wanting to stick to the traditional kind, the Iceland, Luxury Festive Layered Pork Pie (£10.00 for 1.36kg) is incredible and will leave you with plenty left for Boxing Day and beyond. Alternatively, if tradition isn’t high on your agenda, you can’t go wrong with a good old Pukka, Deep-Fill All Steak Family Pie RRP £3.35 or a Greggs, Festive Bake £1.50. For your veggie guests however, the Iceland, Roast Parsnip & Portobello Mushroom Pithivier (£6.00 for 600g) is divine.

While your guests are finishing up on their starters, send the older kids around the table to serve up the grown-ups a glass of Apothic Dark, Tesco RRP £10 ready for the main course.

A Christmas dinner wouldn’t be complete without a turkey, but what if your turkey had a twist? After serving up the Iceland, Turkey & Gammon Wellington (£10.00 for 896g) in the office, we came to the conclusion that a plain old turkey simply wasn’t enough for us anymore, and a combined wellington is certainly the way forward... Now you can’t have the meat without the veg, but having old crockery filled with soggy sprouts and crusty carrots just won’t cut it on Christmas day. Luckily, Iceland have pulled through again with the visually-stunning (and also delicious) Luxury Christmas Tree & Baubles (£2.00 for 400g) – which is perfect paired with gravy or horseradish. The best is yet to come though, so make sure you save some room for dessert… Starting off with the show-stopper, we have the exquisite Iceland, Luxury Raspberry & Pistachio Layered Pavlova (£6.00 for 574g) which is lovely paired with double cream and let’s be honest here, pavlova is an absolute palatepleaser. The bright and colourful Iceland, Eight Fruity Eclairs (£3.00 for 120g) were also a hit in the office and went well with a cup of tea from the Newby Teas, Black Tea Crown Assortment Sainsbury’s RRP £15.

Christmas table, with its shimmery, golden glow and succulent, rich taste.

If you’re keeping the fancy desserts for the grown-ups, a few alternatives for the kids, including the adorably decorated Greggs, Christmas Tree Biscuit 85p or the Greggs, Christmas Gingerbread Muffin £1 which come complete with a sweet, surprise centre.

Those with a flavour for savoury can skip dessert and opt for a bowl of Heat & Eat Crisps, Tesco RRP £2.49 which come in flavours such as hand cooked cheese and chive with a caramelised onion chutney dip. All you have to do is pop them in the microwave for 30 seconds and you have yourself a hot tasty treat – which coincidentally slid down really well with a small glass of Graham’s 20 Year Old Tawny Port, Waitrose RRP £35.95.

If you’re after a different beverage to serve up post-dinner, look no further than the new CÎROC French Vanilla, Amazon RRP £41.05, which can be made into your own special Christmas cocktail by simply adding passionfruit liqueur, passionfruit syrup and lime juice. Or if you’re more of a gin and tonic kind of girl/guy, the Dingle Original Gin, www.ginfestival.com RRP £32.50 comes highly recommended from the seasoned drinkers among us. The winter warmers topping our tipple list this year include the uniquely flavoured coffee liqueur Conker Cold Brew, www.conkerspirit. co.uk RRP £30, and of course it wouldn’t be winter without sinking a whisky chaser while sat by the fire – so our top choice is Cotswolds Single Malt Whisky, www. cotswolddistillery.com RRP £44.95. If a cold glass of something alcoholic simply isn’t enough to toast the festivities, then grab yourself a box or two of the snack-lifechanging Oast to Host Prosecco Mince Pies, Yumbles.com RRP £7.50 – never mind garlic bread Peter Kay, prosecco mince pies are the future…

Stay in bed and surf the web… While we’re big fans of shopping local here at Middlesbrough Today, sometimes we just can’t resist the festive buys we find online. After all that alcohol, you’re bound to get a little peckish on Christmas evening – or for those with bottomless stomach pits, you’ll be ravenous. So, why not please the hungry tummies (including vegan tummies at the party) by whipping up the VBites’ VegiDeli 48 piece party pack, www.vbitesfood.com RRP £13.99 which includes duck style spring rolls, mini quiches and chickpea bhajis.

One of our favourite finds was the showstopper of all showstoppers, Donald Russell’s 23 Carat Golden Goose, www. donaldrussell.com RRP £89 - which would be the jewel in the crown of anyone’s

For the carnivores, make a section on the table filled with a selection of the oh-so delectable Topping’s Pies, Classic Dinky Topped Pork Pie Collection, Yumbles. com RRP £23.76.

And while you’re at it, don’t forget to bring out the cheese board, complete with crackers, VBites’ VegiDeli Duck Style and Orange Pate, www.vbitesfood. com RRP £2.29 150g and our Christmas cheese favourite, which just gets better and better with each bite, Yorkshire Wensleydale with Cherries & Brandy (Half Moon) £16 www.wensleydale.co.uk. Seeing as it’s Christmas, we don’t see why we can’t have another dessert after all of that food… So, to be the hostess with the mostess, purchase a pack of Christmas Pudding and Snowmen Cake Pops, Yumbles.com RRP £19.99 and serve them up after the cheese board. Nobody ever has to know you bought them online, you’re a whiz in the kitchen, remember… Other sweet treats topping our eatall-the-food-wecan-before-January shopping list include DessertsVille Gingerbread Popcorn, Yumbles. com RRP £10 which tastes just as incredible as it smells – SO GOOD, the oh-so pretty and fresh to order The English Rose Bakery, Macaron Selection Box of 14, Yumbles.com RRP £20 which includes salted caramel, hazelnut and Nutella, and strawberries and cream flavours, and last but not least, the soft, silky Buttermilk Gingerbread Fudge, www.buttermilk. co.uk RRP £2.99 which has a subtle festive flavour that is an absolute treat for the taste buds.

From all of us here at Middlesbrough Today, we hope you have an amazing Christmas full of friends, family and of course, food! Enjoy… Middlesbrough Today | 15

Bring The Warmth Into Your Home

An iconic classic, the AGA Cooker still tops the top-ten must haves for the home

The classic look of an AGA Cooker hasn’t changed much since its invention in 1922 by Swedish scientist Gustaf Dalen. The beauty of an AGA is its effortless design, and they are built and crafted at the AGA Factory in Telford. The cooker is constructed of cast iron with a vitreous enamelled exterior and comes in a number of beautiful colours, or you can even choose your own individual colour with the bespoke colour service which is available. The cooker itself works on the principle of stored heat. Using a small energy source (whether it be electricity, gas or oil) the high level of insulation inside the cooker holds the heat and distributes different temperatures to the castings of the cooker. It is a simple but effective resource, and running costs for gas models are currently less than £12 per week. As the cooker is on all the time, the beautiful warmth from the Aga produces an ambient temperature which seeps into the fabric of the building, silently but sweetly raising the temperatur and reducing your requirement for additional heating in your kitchen. In the cooler North East climate and in the modern open plan kitchen design the AGA is

ideal for providing constant warmth. More recently, models of fully- or semi controllable AGA Cookers have become available. There is also a compact baby AGA which will fit into any small flat or cottage, or suit a smaller budget – there really is an AGA to suit every home and every lifestyle. Founded in 1888, the family-run business Walter Dix & Co became one of the first AGA dealers in 1931, covering Tyneside, Northumberland, Durham and North Yorkshire. To this day they provide expert advice on AGA and employ both their own installation team and service engineers. Their fantastic showroom at Team Valley,

Gateshead boasts all the latest models of AGA Cooker and also hosts regular cookery demonstrations. Their knowledgeable staff can demonstrate working models and provide all the necessary information on why an AGA can truly bring the warmth into your home. In addition to AGA Cookers, Walter Dix & Co also is the leading supplier of rangestyle cookers. They have 14 different brands and more than 70 appliances on display in their showroom, as well as a dedicated AGA Cookshop and AGA Wood Burning Stoves. To find out more, get in touch or visit the Team Valley showroom which is open six days a week.
