SCHOOL PUPILS “GOING FOR GOLD” FOR POSITIVE MENTAL HEALTH PUPILS at a Middlesbrough school have become the first in the country to be recognised for promoting positive mental health among their fellow students. The young people at Sunnyside Academy are now “going for gold” in their ambitions as a Headstart school having recently been accredited with silver standard. The Coulby Newham-based primary has been a Headstart school since 2017 and has a dedicated pastoral team to support positive mental health and wellbeing and works with therapeutic services such as Mind, Headstart, Link, Footprints and Bungalow. The pupils have completed an accredited course in supporting wellbeing with their peers and it is the first of its kind nationally.
In recognition of the school’s achievement and its commitment to positive wellbeing the school were awarded £8,000 to design a new sensory room in the school that can be used to support vulnerable pupils. Last week Middlesbrough Council Chief Executive was given the honour of officially opening the new facility and presented the children with their certificates at a special assembly. Mr Parkinson said: “It really was an honour to be asked and to spend time with the children and hear their thoughts and experiences around this very important issue. “It is a fantastic achievement by Sunnyside Academy, and I don’t doubt that schools across Middlesbrough will be working on
similar schemes to promote positive mental health in our young people.”
Middlesbrough Council Chief Executive Tony Parkinson (r) hands out certificates.

MAJOR JUNCTION IMPROVEMENT SCHEME SET TO START JUNCTION improvements on one of Middlesbrough’s busiest transport routes, - the junction of A172 Dixons Bank and Stainton Way – known as the Southern Cross junction have begun. The works, which include road-widening and signalling improvements, are expected to take seven months during which time every effort will be made to keep disruption to a minimum with temporary traffic management arrangements in place.
If the works require any road closures, they will be kept to a minimum and any diversion will be signed and will avoid any residential routes wherever possible. Cllr Lewis Young, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive Member for Economic Development and Infrastructure, said: “These works are a key part of our Middlesbroughwide road infrastructure improvement plans. “We know that around 25,000 vehicles travel on this route every single day and there can be delays on it.
“Unfortunately, while the improvement works are carried out there will be some level of disruption for which we would apologise from the outset - however the works are necessary to improve the traffic flow. Normal working hours will be between 7am7pm from Monday to Friday and any work outside of these hours will be communicated to residents at the earliest possible opportunity.
ORNATE GATES RETURN AFTER SEVEN DECADE ABSENCE ORNATE iron gates are once again standing proudly at the entrance of Middlesbrough’s historic Avenue of Trees after a seven-decade absence. The original gates at the site, which leads from Acklam Road to Acklam Hall, were removed as part of the Second World War effort and replaced by low-lying gates and reduced size pillars. However, thanks to a bequest from Acklam resident Alan Hunter to the Acklam 2020 community group, of which he was treasurer, new gates have been installed, having been designed using an old photograph uncovered by members of Acklam 2020.
Members of Acklam 2020 community group, with supporters and Middlesbrough councillors and officers at the refurbished entrance to the Avenue of Trees.
“Acklam Hall and the surrounding areas were Alan’s joy and he was a lifelong resident and educated at Acklam Grammar School located in Acklam Hall. “We are so grateful for his generous bequest to the group and the residents of our area. “It is a fitting choice of project to remember him by, as the history and ecology of the area were his passion. “I think we have done something that is quite honourable in his memory and very appropriate.” A plaque commemorating the memory of Mr Hunter who enabled the restoration of
The new gates and pillars. The image, researched by Middlesbrough Council’s conservation officer, depicts the gate prior to the war effort, including a small Talbot hunting dog from the Hustler family crest. As the gates looked prior to World War II. Marilyn Wood, Secretary of Acklam 2020, said: “I feel very proud and I think it is a responsibility spending someone else’s money and doing it justice. 6 | Middlesbrough Today

A HOME AWAY FROM HOME 2019 is the year of the staycation and you don’t have to travel far to find a great destination, with everything you need for a long or short stay. Thorpe Farm, at Barnard Castle, is a picturesque escape for the whole family, with camping and caravan facilities and static homes, ideal if you’re looking to buy your own holiday home, planning a week away on the search for a fantastic day out. Surrounded by idyllic farmlands, it’s almost hard to believe that the park is only an hour from York, Harrogate and Newcastle, making it a great location to get all the benefits of being close to nature, while also being close enough to nearby cities for a day trip shopping. And with the coast and the Lake District also just an hour’s drive away, 16 | Middlesbrough Today
the centre is a perfect place to set up base to delve even further into the region’s natural landscapes. However, chances are that once you’ve set up at Thorpe Farm, you might find yourself not wanting to leave as there is plenty to do on site, from making the most of the natural surroundings to browsing everything on offer at the farm shop, including own-brand jams, biscuits and much more. With 20 acres of woodland planted in the last 10 years, you don’t have to walk far to feel completely engrossed in nature, and you might even spot some of the many animals who have made the area their home. And anyone looking to get up close and personal with the wildlife can
head to Wetheriggs Animal Rescue on site. The centre regularly takes in unwanted or injured pets, farm animals and wildlife and opens the Rescue every day for members of the public to come and visit. It’s a perfect activity for families, with regular animal handling sessions so children can get up close to rabbits, guinea pigs, chicks, snakes, rodents, lizards and many more. Or, if you’re looking to keep active during your stay, head to the Country Park and follow one of the many popular walking and cycling routes, or explore the Wetland Nature Reserve which is also home to a vast array of birds and animals – so don’t forget your binoculars.
And after a long day tiring yourself out in the natural world, the centre’s Courtyard restaurant provides the perfect spot to recharge. The newly refurbished eatery mixes original features with contemporary furniture to create a modern yet welcoming space, with a brand new menu featuring hearty meals and a selection of indulgent sweet treats. All meals are prepared fresh every day in the farmhouse kitchen,
making the Courtyard a great place to meet friends for coffee, enjoy a filling meal during your stay or stop for lunch on a family day out. Paul Barkes, who runs Thorpe Farm, believes the park has great appeal. “The centre has undergone a number of changes over the last 10 years and we’re always looking for new ways to improve the experience of those who visit us,” said Paul.
“Whether families are planning a day trip or a longer visit, there’s plenty to do on site and there’s nothing like spending time in nature to remind yourself of everything the region has to offer.” For more information, visit www.thorpefarm.co.uk or contact Thorpe Farm on 01833 627242 or info@thorpefarm.co.uk.

For instance, newlyweds can snap those lifetime photos in vintage cars, motorcycles, bicycles and even tractors against the backdrop of the stunning gardens, outbuildings, barns and stables at the charming rural retreat. Headlam Hall’s four acres of beautiful walled gardens include an immaculate main lawn, ornamental canal, rose garden and kitchen garden, also making it the perfect location for a stroll in the grounds or a bit of fun. WELCOME TO NORTH SHIRE “In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit,” wrote JRR Tolkien. But, as Emma Walker discovered, some hobbits live in a little more luxury…
In a magical land, far, far, away – well, about 12 miles north west of Whitby – lies the mythical village of North Shire; a land of dragons, hobbits and, for a couple of days in late November, five pals with a combined age greater than Gandalph’s. We meet up every year for a mini-break and our destination has to be two things; reasonably priced and a little bit unusual. We’ve done canal boats, we’ve done yurts but, when a Google search revealed a hobbit-style house on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors, we struck gold. With little idea what to expect, we set off from our various parts of the country for North Shire, a family-run farm, just outside Liverton, just as Storm Diana was tearing up trees and testing the windscreen wipers to their limits. Dusk was falling when, through the lashing rain, a bright pink glow appeared 20 | Middlesbrough Today
on the horizon – colour changing lights illuminating the most gloriously intricate iron gates: the entrance to North Shire.
With an entourage of clucking hens
Fairy lights in the trees revealed an assortment of shepherds’ huts and, because “it does not do to leave a dragon out of your calculations,” the Green Dragon café, where we collected the keys to our hobbit house.
garden to a charming little building, cut
and a vocal black cat we made our way, windswept and soaked to the skin, through a picket fenced, lantern lit into a hill. And as we pushed open the large, round front door of Potts Corner, the warmth nearly knocked us flat.
Here, owner, Tim, plied us with superb cocktails and told us what we might have seen had we visited in better weather. It turns out this quiet little area – falling between Cleveland and North Yorkshire - has rather a lot to be proud of. It was the burial place of a Saxon princess, whose treasures, found alongside her, are literally priceless. It has the highest cliffs on the east coast – along with some superb walks – and a strong history and future of potash mining. It also has some of the friendliest people any of us had met in a long while. From Kim and Shannon at North Shire, who brought us a huge slab of chocolate cake from the Green Dragon café, as a welcome gift, to Tim, Ian at The Water Wheel and the delivery fellow from the Loftus takeaway who kindly delivered our order to Mad Alice’s so we didn’t have to set foot outside.
With its stone flagged floor, a large wooden table surrounded by sofas and a portrait of Bilbo Baggins over the mantlepiece, this was the show home of hobbit houses. To either side of the sitting room were two bedrooms, with handmade mattresses on the bunk beds, while a bathroom housed a rather lovely slipper bath and – huge relief – plenty of scalding hot water. That night despite the storm outside we slept like tops, warm and sheltered, and in fact we rarely ventured out during
daylight hours – except for a brief trip to Whitby, from which we returned utterly soaked. Thankfully, hobbits like television and so we curled up on the sofas and watched a festive Miss Marple and played board games, heading outside (like hibernating hobbits) only in search of food. The first evening was spent at the Water Wheel Inn at Liverton, whose water wheel, it turns out, is purely decorative – there isn’t a stream for miles - but where the gammon and chips were excellent. Feeling that the small kitchen area in the hobbit house probably wasn’t created with the feeding of five hungry adults in mind, we set off on the second evening in search of somewhere else to eat. And that’s how we ended up in Loftus … and Mad Alice’s Micro Bar – a small but perfectly formed, fairy-lit bar with around 70 types of gin, not to mention a large number of locally brewed ales and craft beers.
The next morning, as we prepared to leave, there was one final surprise – we opened the door of Potts Corner to find the storm had passed. The sun was shining and, for the first time since we arrived, we could see just what a stunning location this really was – with views across the moors stretching as far as the eye could see. Few venues are as magical in the depths of winter as they are at the height of summer, but this really was. It was charming, comfortable and the perfect place in which to spend time with friends. “If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold,” wrote Tolkien, “it would be a merrier world.”
I couldn’t agree more.

Jump, play and splodge your way through February at RSPB Saltholme Winter is often a time for staying cosy and warm indoors but RSPB Saltholme, the popular nature reserve near Stockton-on-Tees, is encouraging families to put on their wellies and their woollies and explore the great outdoors this February. Every year the reserve celebrates Welly Season February in and this year is no different. You can go along to jump in the welly splash, play with the water works and splodge in their newly opened mud pit. Aimée Lee, Visitor Experience Manager at RSPB Saltholme, said: “February might
be wet and cold but we have so much to explore here on the reserve at this time of year. We love to see children jumping in the welly splash and we cannot wait to reveal our newly installed mud pit. ” In addition to the month long Welly Season the reserve are also offering additional activities over February half term, including nest box workshops and the creation of a new willow structure in the Discovery Zone. Aimée added: “This Welly Season is all about being outdoors and getting wet and muddy. This year we have decided to get creative and we are encouraging
our visitors to come along and get their hands dirty by helping us to create a new willow structure in our Discovery Zone. This will then bloom in the summer into a fantastic shelter that can be used by schools and families when they need a little shade outdoors.” The nest box workshops will run on Tuesday 19th, Wednesday 20th and Thursday 21st at a cost of £7.50 per box for non-members and £6 per box for members. The willow structure activity will be running throughout the half term week and it is free to participate. The reserve is open from 9.30am until 4pm throughout the half term holiday. Entry is £5 per car, free for RSPB members.
