Picture shown is the memorial vase at Stewart Park marking the location of Cook’s birthplace.
CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED TO CREATE COOK STATUE IN HISTORIC PARK WORK is getting under way on a project to create a statue to one of Middlesbrough’s most famous sons. The tribute to Captain James Cook will be built at Stewart Park - already home to the Captain Cook Birthplace Museum. Middlesbrough Mayor Ray Mallon said it was important to create a fitting tribute to the famous explorer in recognition of his contribution to the heritage of the town. It is hoped the move will act as a
catalyst to attract further external investment towards the total cost of the statue which is expected to be in the region of £160,000. A statue to Captain Cook would complement the £9 million revamp of the park - part funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Big Lottery Fund under the Parks for People scheme – which has seen major overhaul of the Victorian estate buildings and the creation of a new visitor centre.
PUPILS JUMP FOR JOY AT RED HOUSE SCHOOL For the second year running Red House School, in Norton, is ranked the Top Co-Educational Independent School in England, without a sixth form, in the Sunday Times Parent Power League Tables. Mr Alex Taylor, Headmaster, said: “We are delighted that we have maintained our ranking for a second year. We consistently achieve outstanding GCSE results and last summer, our results were amongst the best in the school’s history. I would like to congratulate everyone on this tremendous achievement. Mr Alex Taylor continued: “At Red House School we encourage children to not only achieve their full potential academically but to excel in all aspects of school life. Through sport, music and our wide range of co-curricular activities children are encouraged to develop their individual gifts, talents, skills and knowledge so that they become confident individuals. 4 | Middlesbrough Today
We also ensure that small class sizes are maintained so that our dedicated teachers are able to recognise and nurture these individual talents. We provide a warm and caring family environment where teachers, pupils and parents work closely together to create a genuine sense of community”.
TAKE ME OUT STAR HEADING FOR MIDDLESBROUGH TOWN HALL THERE is more good news for Teesside’s comedy fans with the announcement that Take Me Out and Phoenix Nights star Paddy McGuinness will play Middlesbrough Town Hall on Tuesday, September 29. Tickets for Paddy’s brand new show Daddy McGuinness are on sale at the Town Hall Box Office. Paddy, who is raring to get back to where he belongs – on stage, making people laugh - said: “I’m really looking forward to being back on tour – I’ve missed it. I’ve got a great new show planned - Daddy McGuinness. “Amongst many other things, I’ll be sharing several stories about becoming a first time Dad and parenthood. Roll on September!”
FREE ADVICE IN FAMILY LAW CASES A unique law clinic at Teesside University has teamed up with several local firms of solicitors to offer a free legal advice service in family law cases. Since the changes to legal aid last year, financial support in family cases has been limited or removed altogether. Teesside University Law Clinic is now operating a weekly drop-in clinic where people can get advice on matters including divorce, adoption and domestic violence. The pilot scheme will run until the end of March, but it is hoped the service will become permanent depending on the demand. The family law project is intended to be a drop-in service, though demand is likely to be high and appointments can be made by contacting Teesside University Law Clinic on 01642 738738.

TEES TEACHER IN THE RUNNING TO BE NAMED BEST IN THE WORLD
OPTICIANS RAISE GLASSES TO CELEBRATE 90TH ANNIVERSARY
A Tees teacher is one of only two UK finalists in an international competition to find the world’s best teacher. Dr Richard Spencer, of Middlesbrough College, is shortlisted for a prize of $1m (£640,000) for the Varkey Gems Global Teacher Prize to find the world’s most outstanding teacher.
Local independent opticians Cooper & Barr have raised their glasses to celebrate 90 years in the optometry business. First opening its doors in 1925 on Grange Road in Middlesbrough town centre, Cooper & Barr now have three practices across the region in Stokesley, Sedgefield and Coulby Newham serving over 25, 000 patients with exciting expansion plans in the pipeline.
The winner will be announced in March. Dr Spencer, known to his students as “Doc” is Head of Science at MC6, Middlesbrough College’s purpose-built sixth form, where he teaches A level Biology to 70 students.
As a family-run business spanning over three generations, William and Evelyn Cooper opened their first practice 90 years ago. The practice then moved to Borough Road where its iconic marble frontage with a neon sign was quite the sight in the 1930s.
He said the world’s best teacher competition was a “fantastic way of raising the profile of teaching”. He added: “It’s fascinating to learn from teachers from other countries and to find out about different ways of engaging and enthusing students. “I’ve been involved with Science on Stage Europe for many years but winning the award would give me the opportunity to be involved in teaching and learning initiatives globally.”
The business then became Cooper & Flower in the 1970s before changing to Cooper & Barr in 2012. Dr Spencer studied for a PhD in molecular biology before becoming a teacher and has previously won prizes for his work as a science teacher.
“We are very proud to be celebrating 90 years in the business and I am delighted that my family have been involved for all ninety of those years” said Nicola Cooper-Heenan, co-owner of Cooper & Barr. Middlesbrough Today | 5

A Prisoner of Love
Crime, imprisonment and execution - not the most starry-eyed of sentiments but these macabre acts are believed to have inspired the most romantic day of the year… On February 14 2015 more than a billion cards will be exchanged around the world, many accompanied by flowers, chocolates and declarations of love. But the story behind this heartfelt holiday is not one of adoration and happiness but of misery and martyrdom, resulting in the death of St Valentine in approximately 289 AD. At this time the Roman Empire was in turmoil and facing an imminent threat of invasion. Believing that unmarried men made better soldiers to defend his territory, Emperor Claudius II made the bold decision to ban marriage among young people. Bishop Valentine of Rome was adamant that this action betrayed God’s will and continued to perform marriage ceremonies in secret. He was eventually caught and sentenced to imprisonment, torture and ultimately death, with his beheading believed to have taken place on February 14. During his time in jail, the Bishop is said to have fallen in love with the jailer’s daughter and sent her a note just before his execution signed,” from your Valentine” – a possible precursor to today’s use of cards. The first official St Valentine’s Day was declared by Pope Galasius on February 14, 496 AD, though debate remains as to whether this was in honour of the Bishop or in reference to the pagan fertility festival of Lupercalia, which
YOUR CHANCE TO WIN
had been marked on February 13, 14 and 15 in Ancient Rome. Whatever the true inspiration, Valentine’s Day has now become synonymous with love and affection, thanks in no small part to acclaimed authors such as Geoffrey Chaucer and William Shakespeare who popularised the notion in their work. The way we pay homage to the Patron Saint of Lovers today can arguably be traced back to 1913, when Hallmark produced its first Valentine’s card. While love notes had been passed before, this, for the cynical among you, marked the start of the commercialisation of February 14, which has now spawned a multi-billion pound industry worldwide. But, however you chose to mark Valentine’s Day this year and beyond, remember to spare a thought for the Bishop Valentine and his unwavering faith in the power of love. While the giving of gifts and cards has become almost obligatory, this is a day when it’s truly the thought that counts. So, whether you choose to exchange presents, treat them to an evening out or simply stay in and cuddle up at home, it’s the perfect opportunity to spend quality time with the ones you love and to show your affection for partners, family and friends.

Step into a new home at Acklam Green for a fraction of the cost. At the age of 20 Charlotte McCormack is probably the youngest home owner in the country thanks to an innovative scheme promoted by house builder Bellway at its site in Acklam Green near Middlesbrough. With the average age of a house buyer now around 36 and two thirds of buyers relying on the bank of mum and dad, Charlotte has Bellway’s Stepping Stones scheme to thank for her new two bedroom home. House buyers at Acklam Green on the outskirts of Middlesbrough can purchase a new home valued at £87,995 with a 5% deposit and mortgage of only £39,598. The remaining £43,997 is treated as a 25-year interest free loan from Middlesbrough Council’s Stepping Stones scheme. Unlike a shared equity scheme the buyer owns
100% of the home from the outset. Bellway’s mortgage advisors, New Homes Mortgages determine a buyers financial circumstances and then make a mortgage offer which could be up to 50% of the value of the home, all the buyer needs is 5% of the purchase price. Charlotte who has recently moved into her new home said: “Without Stepping Stones I could not possibly have considered buying my own home, the scheme has made a massive difference to me by making my
home more affordable. I think that it makes far more sense to pay a mortgage than renting a property, I now have my very own home which I never dreamed would be possible.” Bellway has a range of two and three bedroom semi detached and terrace homes available at Acklam Green that start in price
from £87,995. Rob Armstrong, sales director at Bellway, said: “Stepping Stones is an incredible scheme that can help people who are trapped in the rental market and want to buy a property of their own. It significantly reduces the monthly mortgage payments and the the loan remains interest free which is another significant advantage. As funds are limited we would urge prospective buyers to contact us as soon as possible.” Acklam Green off Acklam Road is only four miles from Middlesbrough, locally there are a selection of shops and there are also good schools for all ages nearby as well as a day nursery in Acklam Road itself. Local bus services into the heart of Middlesbrough and other destinations are frequent and reliable. Thornaby and Middlesbrough railway stations are both within easy reach, as are the A66 and A19 trunk roads.

OUR EARLY YEARS MAKE SUCH A DIFFERENCE TO THE PERSON WE GROW UP TO BE At Red House School we keep the whole journey in mind. Our experience shows that a well-rounded education, filled with cocurricular activities, leads to so much more than academic success. Children discover the confidence to grasp the opportunities that life will present beyond the classroom. Of course academic success matters and our record backs that up; we have been ranked the Number 1 Co-Educational Independent School in England without a sixth form, for the last two years, in the Sunday Times Parent Power League Tables, but at Red House we believe that exam results are not the sole indicator of a child’s capabilities. That is why we create a positive and supportive environment where children are nurtured to achieve their full potential, not only academically, but in all aspects of school life. Indeed, we know that academic improvement often stems from the self-belief found in sport, music, theatre or travel.
14 | Middlesbrough Today
Our school ethos is built around giving children a complete education: physical, intellectual and emotional development gained from a wide range of experiences within a broad and balanced curriculum. Teachers are given the time to care for every child so that their individual talents emerge and develop. By retaining smaller classes, children feel more secure about contributing. Red House School has a unique family atmosphere. We encourage parents to become involved in their child’s education, weaving a close-knit community among
teachers, children and parents, so that the best results are achieved. The best way to experience life at Red House is to visit the school. Tours are available throughout the year. We are also holding a Nursery play and stay afternoon for children aged 2 - 4 on Friday 6th March 1.30 pm 3.00 pm. Places for this event are limited so prior booking is essential. Please contact Mrs Rosalind Green, School Secretary, on 01642 535353 or email rosalind.green@redhouseschool.co.uk.

MIDDLESBROUGH TOWN’S HISTORIC RAILWAY STATION IS TO BE THE NEW PLATFORM FOR A POPULAR ARTIST’S WORK Renowned Middlesbrough artist Mackenzie Thorpe has found a new platform for his work - at the town’s historic railway station. The popular artist has been asked by Middlesbrough Council to exhibit some of his work at the station which is used by more than one million passengers every year. Mackenzie is creating a couple of significant new pieces especially for the exhibition which will see nine paintings displayed in fixed frames on Platform 2 for two years. The 58-year-old’s work has been shown as far afield as the USA, Australia and Japan but he’s never happier than when his pictures are on show in Middlesbrough. Teesside University and the Captain Cook Birthplace Museum have hosted recent local exhibitions. In November Mackenzie
visited the town’s Dorman Museum to sign copies of his latest book ‘Out of the Shadows’. He said: “I have always been a great fan of railway posters and so who would have thought that me, a boy from the ’Boro, gets the honour of having my work hung in my home town railway station. “It is a real honour and even more so because it is Middlesbrough Station, the place I have started and finished so many memorable journeys.” Mackenzie was one of seven children, spending his early childhood in a terraced house near Union Street before the family moved to the new Beechwood estate when he was a toddler. He began his working life as a labourer and at Smiths Dock, before his vocation drew him to tell the story of the people of Middlesbrough through his art.
First TransPennine Express Station Manager Mike Drewery said: “Middlesbrough Railway Station is used by around 1.4 million passengers every year, so it’s vital to us that they have a good experience and they form a good first impression of the town. “Mackenzie Thorpe is hugely popular, and rightly cherished by the people of his home town, so he was the perfect choice to create some eye-catching art works for the station. “This is a real coup for the town and we are sure those who live, work in and visit Middlesbrough will get a great deal of enjoyment from the new pictures.” The nine works are due to be installed at Middlesbrough Station in March. THE THREE R’s Escape your winter woes with a trip to one of the North East’s leading spas - Claire Buchan did and can’t recommend it highly enough…
At school we’re taught the principles of the three R’s - reading, writing and arithmetic now, at the tender age of 30, I’ve discovered a new and far more satisfying definition for those three little letters - rest, relaxation and From the moment you enter this five star hotel, tantalisingly tucked away down a long driveway in the centre of Hurworth, you can almost feel the tensions of the day slipping away. Step into the Spa, which can be accessed via the hotel or through its own designated entrance, and it’s like arriving in a whole new world, where stress and worries simply fail to exist. My mum and I visited for the first time on a wintry Wednesday evening, dashing straight Twilight packages, priced from an extremely reasonable £65. After being greeted by an extremely friendly receptionist and given a brief introduction to the running order of the evening, we were escorted up to the Brasserie for a mouthwatering pre-Spa meal. With views overlooking the hotel’s golf course and an outdoor terrace to be used when the and refined setting, perfect for dining day or night. After much deliberation we opted for the beef meatballs, pea and asparagus risotto, chargrilled chicken and a posh parmo - all of which were well presented and cooked to perfection. Despite being surprisingly full we both also managed to finish our desserts of a mini chocolate and espresso mousse and a mini hazelnut semifreddo, both of which came After that it was time to Spa and, if the food upstairs set the standard, then the thermal certainly didn’t disappoint. Following the guide provided with our robes and slippers on check in, we started our Spa journey in the Tepidarium, with warm bodyshaped beds, designed to relax both body and mind. From there we sunk into the hydro pool, complete with a choice of massaging stations that are automatically activated by a timer. My mum was particularly fond of the airbeds, which use tiny bubbles to massage your entire body. The poolside footspa, though slightly startling at first, was equally invigorating, with two foot baths per person allowing you to alternate between hot and cold massaging bubbles. Already feeling refreshed, we decided to heat things up a bit with a visit to the Spa’s Roman
Sauna. The de-toxifying heat was the perfect nearby Tropicarium, which uses moist heat to cleanse the skin, was equally satisfying. After venturing in to the Caladarium, which uses hot steam infused with aromatic oils to stimulate the senses and soften the skin, we decided to brave the Igloo. This carefully cooled room is designed to complement the hot therapies, helping to close the pores, reduce inflammation and improve circulation. the huge swimming pool and a replenishing drink from the juice bar, which we sipped while lazing on our loungers with a copy of Vogue magazine. Our Twilight Spa package included three but, as we stepped out into the wind and rain, we were already vowing to return, next time for even longer.
