FUN, FUNCTIONS AND FAMILY FEUDS

Today, Redworth Hall Hotel is one of the North East’s leading leisure and business venues, catering for thousands of visitors every year. But life at this former Jacobean manor house hasn’t always run so smoothly, thanks in large part to a bitter family feud… Redworth Hall, or Redworth House as it was originally known, was built in 1693 as a family home for George and Eleanor Crosier and their five daughters. It was a happy and contented household until the couple’s grandson Robert, widely regarded as the black sheep of the family, fell in love with an heiress less than half his age. Despite protestations from his family, 50 year-old Robert wed his 22 year-old love and was promptly disowned from the Crosier fold. The couple made an unwelcome return in 1744 when Robert used his wife’s money to buy Redworth House from his estranged relatives and set about transforming it into his own idea of the perfect family home. In 1769 Robert forced his 17 year-old daughter Jane to marry her cousin Crosier in an attempt to strengthen the family line. Though deeply unhappy, Jane did her best to fulfil her role as a wife and mother to 11 children, before disappearing without trace 30 years later. While Crosier was never officially blamed for his wife’s disappearance, many believed he’d played a role in her mysterious fate, especially when he moved in with his mistress a short time later. If Crosier was responsible for Jane’s untimely demise, then he received his comeuppance in 1863 when, after a night of drunken debauchery, he was thrown from his horse and froze to death alone. Following Crosier’s somewhat poetic death, Redworth House was inherited by his second son, Robert Surtees, who is credited with adding many of the property’s most beautiful features, including the spiral stone staircase and galleried Great Hall, which still exist today. The house was renamed Redworth Hall in honour of its grand new style and subsequently played host to the Surtees family across several generations. Since then the property has survived many transformations, serving as a residential school for boys and even as a refuge for Czar Prince Alexander, who fled his homeland during the First World War. In 1999 Redworth Hall was taken over by the Paramount Group, which invested more than £1m transforming it into a luxury hotel, fit for the 21st century.

While many new additions, including a spa, restaurant and executive accommodation, have since helped transform the property into a leading destination for all manner of functions and breaks, many of its original features remain intact. These treasures, including the majestic summer house built by Major Surtees as a tribute to his wife in the 1930s, are now being safeguarded by Redworth Hall’s latest owner, The Hotel Collection, which is focusing not only on preserving the building’s amazing history but in delivering unparalleled service and amenities to make modern guests feel at home.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Fine food is an art form, just ask the chefs at Redworth Hall hotel… High quality cuisine requires superior ingredients, as well as the skill and passion to bring them together. At Redworth Hall hotel our team of culinary experts use the best locally sourced and seasonal produce to create a wide range of dishes, from English and Continental classics to innovations from the frontiers of contemporary cuisine. Dining in the main takes place in the hotel’s stylish 1744 restaurant, which is open daily for both overnight guests and outside visitors alike. The restaurant’s menus, which include a separate children’s option, are updated regularly, with all dishes prepared with skill and artistry, before being served by the restaurant’s discreet but attentive waiting staff. The Restaurant also has two semi private areas which can be used for semi private dining for up to 20 guests. Ideal for intimate corporate or family occasions. For more informal dining food is also available in the adjoining Cocktail Bar and the Kelvington lounges directly above, which serves a range of light meals and snacks from 11am until late. As one of the North East’s leading events venues, Redworth Hall hotel caters for a wide range of private parties and business events, held in either its intimate dining rooms or larger function suites. To make organising these events as easy as possible, the hotel’s top chefs have put together a selection of set menus, which have been carefully balanced to cater for guests attending formal gatherings such as corporate dinners and weddings.

One example from the wedding selection is detailed below: Homemade chicken, tarragon and leek terrine, English fruit chutney

Alternatively event organisers are given the opportunity to work with Redworth Hall’s events team and chefs to tailor make a menu that is perfect for them.

Rump of lamb, beetroot dauphinoise, roasted root vegetables, red wine jus

This can be done by selecting from a wide variety of recommended dishes, such as chicken liver parfait with redcurrant dressing, pan-fried sea bass with mussel and bacon risotto and white chocolate and passion fruit mousse.

Coffee and petit fours

Or, if you have particular favourites, requests or dietary requirements, they will create a bespoke menu just for you. A similarly extensive selection is also available for those requiring more informal eating arrangements, with options ranging from hot and cold buffets to barbecues - ideal for evening receptions, private parties and meetings.

Vanilla crème brulee, homemade strawberry shortbread

IN FULL BLOOM Blooms are back and bigger than ever

From pedestal arrangements to bouquets, buttonholes to table decorations, flowers aren’t just the supporting cast anymore, they’re centre stage – and rightly so. For too long we’ve chosen our flowers for the wrong reasons; to tie a colour theme together, to give a bridesmaid something to hold or to fill a gloomy corner of the church. Of course flowers do all these things but they also bring so much more to the party, namely fragrance and beauty.

Images supplied by www.flowersbynattrass.com

When it comes to weddings, flowers are one tradition that will never wither and die. In fact, the fashion for all things floral is positively blooming.

The key is quantity; in the number and range of displays and in the flowers themselves. Why just pop a single, small arrangement on a table when you can create a far better effect with a big display? We’re not talking tall centrepieces here – they’re impractical and annoying as they block the view. Shallow bowls of flowers, though, teaming over with ivy and clouds of gypsophila look wonderful – or why not scatter scented petals over the tables? Fragrance is also a crucial part of a wedding day and, again, flowers come to the rescue. Of course, heavily scented blooms – particularly old English roses – don’t come cheap. So, clever brides are taking a tip from their great grandmothers and inserting herbs – such as rosemary – or sprigs of lavender into their bouquets. When it comes to perhaps the most important floral display, however; the bridal bouquet, again, think big. And, whether you go for vivid pink peonies; scented, softly-coloured sweet peas, or that most English of flowers; the rose, make sure your day is filled with perfume and petals.

Dresses to Dream of When you’re planning your big day all decisions pale in comparison to finding the prefect dress - and, with so much choice on offer this year, finding your dream gown couldn’t be easier… It’s a well-known fact that the all-important wedding dress is a vital part of almost every bride’s dream day. It is, without question, one of the most memorable outfits you will ever wear, so it’s important you get it right, with a shade, cut and style which flatter. So where do you start? Fashions from across the decades are coming together this year with vintage glamour at the forefront of designers’ minds. It’s all about adding that extra sparkle to your gown with some understated detail; from the lace embroidery of the twenties to halter necks of the fifties, there’s something to suit all tastes – meaning you have plenty of choice when finding a gown to flatter your figure. Many brides are choosing a court or chapel train as a popular alternative to the full length cathedral train. Their circular shape and shorter length make them more manageable, while still giving the elegance associated with long, sweeping trains. Extending from the waist, court trains are flattering for a variety of figures. Brides with an athletic figure can pair this cut with cap sleeves and flared skirts, whereas brides with a fuller figure can opt for a ball gown skirt and a boned bust. Whether the main body of the dress is satin or silk, choosing a dress with Venetian lace embellishment or a net overlay can help you add a bit of bling to your wedding gown while still giving you the classic look that so many brides dream of. From neckline embellishment and embroidered cuffs to all over lace, you can go for as much detail as you like, transforming the plainest frock into a glittering gown or simply adding a few little touches to give your dress the ‘wow’ factor. Headbands and high necklines from the Roaring 20s are a perfect choice for more mature or conservative brides. This popular style of dress offers more modesty than the traditional sweetheart neckline and, with added detail and various accessories, will give you a grown-up and sophisticated look. One of the great things about being a bride, especially this year, is that there is such a vast selection of dresses to choose from. So, whether you pick a bespoke creation or a designer gown, you can look and feel like a princess on your big day: after all, it’s a day you’ll remember forever. All bridal gowns and bridesmaids dresses featured are available at Sense of Style, Darlington. Find us on facebook

SNAP HAPPY Make sure your day is picture perfect From informal shots to carefully posed pictures, photography has a key part to play in capturing the details and essence of a wedding day. Camera phones, digital technology and image sharing through social media sites have encouraged us all to click away to our heart’s content – often with great results. However, this is one day you can’t repeat, so it makes sense to leave nothing to chance and to put your big day firmly in the hands of a professional.. A trained, experienced wedding photographer will talk through what is wanted – be it formal group shots or an informal, reportage-style series of un-posed images - and even suggest shots based on their first-hand experience. Ask how well they know the venue as someone who has worked there before will know which rooms make for the best backdrops and which hidden areas of the grounds provide the prettiest settings. Their skill in actually taking the photographs should also be matched by their skill in arranging them. A professional photographer will ensure the gown the flowers and the guests are all displayed to their best advantage and will also ensure that everyone is included. It is crucial to the smooth running of the day that the photographer and the wedding party know exactly which photographs are to be taken, when and how long the process will take – few things mar a wedding as much as guests left standing around while the couple have their photographs taken. In addition, a delay in the photography at the start of the reception could result in timing issues throughout the day so it is best to have a plan and to stick to it.

Images supplied by www.fyzal.com

As with any element of a wedding, preparation is everything. Only when you know your photography is in the safest and most professional hands will you be able to truly relax and enjoy it.

LET THEM EAT CAKE Choosing your sweet centrepiece Let there be no doubt; cake is having a moment. The success of TV’s Great British Bake Off and the rise in popularity of everything from cupcakes to heavily decorated, sculptured creations, means wedding cakes are in the spotlight as never before. For years tradition dictated that this sweet finalé to the celebratory feast was a three tiered construction of fruit cakes encased in brittle royal icing; beautiful, but predictable. Now, however, like flowers and gowns before them, cakes are taking their cue from fashion, from contemporary culture and trends, and reclaiming their rightful place as the centrepiece of the wedding reception.

Such is the fashion for cakes which reflect the characters of the bridal couple and their lives together that anything goes in terms of decoration – from glitter and sparklers to swathes of tulle around the base of the cake and fresh flowers adorning it. Tiers, too, are back in fashion with brides keen to copy the towering cakes so beloved by royalty and Hollywood - and the trick to creating a cake with wow factor on a budget is to make deep tiers and to replace a couple of the tiers with iced cardboard instead of cake. The cake will look impressive, the cost won’t be as high and, providing the bride and groom don’t try to slice into the cardboard, the guests will never know. However, whatever size and style of cake, whatever it’s made from or looks like, what matters most is that everyone has a slice – that they are all able to share in this most delicious symbol of the special day.

Images supplied by Kelly Ann’s Cakes www.kellyanns.co.uk

While fruit cakes will always be popular – not least because they are firm enough to bear the weight of tiers – bridal couples are increasingly opting for sponges and even cheesecakes and cupcakes as a sweet alternative likely to appeal to all generations.

Salon Secrets We asked Redworth Hall hotel’s hair and beauty teams for their top tips for keeping your hair and skin in tip top condition… For stunning skin: • Always wash your face before bed – sleeping in your make-up is a skin care sin • Use a moisturiser with SPF all year round • Exfoliate regularly to remove dead skin cells and help unblock pores • Use the right products for your skin type, especially if you have dry or sensitive skin • Remember beauty is more than skin deep so try to get a good night’s sleep, drink plenty of water and don’t forget to smile • Treat yourself to a tailored treatment at a professional spa like Redworth Hall hotel. For luscious locks: • Use a wide tooth comb to spread your conditioner through the hair from the middle to the ends • Rinse shampoo and conditioner thoroughly unless it’s a leave-in treatment • Be gentle - roughly towel drying or brushing your hair can cause a lot of damage

• Use a protective spray when blow drying or styling • Don’t colour without advice, especially if you’re colouring for the first time or making a drastic change • Get a regular cut to eliminate split ends and keep your hair in the best possible condition From battling the bulge to training for a marathon, we all have different reasons for staying in shape. At Redworth Hall hotel’s award-winning health club the focus is not only on helping visitors to achieve these individual goals, but on improving their overall health and well-being too. The purpose built centre is specifically tailored to cater for a wide range of exercise needs and offers everything from low-impact activity to high-intensity training. Then, once the workout is complete, health club visitors can relax their aching muscles with a visit to the hydro pool, sauna or steam room. This scheme, which is open to individuals or couples, includes a free induction and personalised fitness programme, as well as a range of added benefits and discounts on treatments in the hotel spa. Expert advice

Redworth Hall hotel offers these top tips for staying in shape:

Make staying fit a lifestyle choice Exercise alone can only do so much so it’s important to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Be sure to drink lots of water and eat well as much as possible but do allow yourself the occasional treat. Don’t overdo it Working out for an hour three to four times a week is good for a beginner but even the most experienced exerciser needs time to rest and recover. Set a goal Whether it’s losing weight, toning up or improving your overall fitness levels, having a long-term target can keep you on track, while marking every milestone on the way will also offer added motivation. Review your programme It’s important to review your exercise routine regularly. Too many people continue on the same regime for months without increasing the intensity of what they’re doing and this will only deliver limited results. Seek professional advice Don’t embark on any new fitness regime without seeking advice first. Redworth Hall hotel’s experienced fitness team can offer guidance on the best way to reach your goals without risking injury.

Mix it up Don’t do the same thing every time. Alternate gym sessions with a swim, exercise class or game of tennis to ensure you’re working every muscle group and not getting bored in your body or mind.

ONE FOR THE LADIES Covering your costs can be hard for any organisation and charities in particular require more effort than most. But that heavy burden becomes lighter with the right kind of support - as the fundraising team from Butterwick Hospice in Bishop Auckland recently discovered… The charity, which cares for people across the North East with a life limiting illness, raised £2800 in its first event at Redworth Hall hotel, with event organiser Beryl Anderson crediting both the venue and its staff for aiding in its success. She said: “I’ve organised a number of events for Butterwick Hospice and can honestly say my role was made that much easier with the professionalism and enthusiastic attitude from all of the Redworth staff.

She said: “I knew I wanted to get married in the North East and Redworth Hall wasn’t only stunning, but was also easily accessible for my fiancé’s family travelling from Yorkshire.”

Beryl, said: “There was plenty of parking, guests were able to stroll around the grounds and there was great attention to detail, especially with the afternoon tea being served on unique black slates with sumptuous cakes pastries and sandwiches. “It was so good in fact we’ve already booked to return again next year.”

The 31 year-old, who now lives in Taunton, Somerset, returned to her hometown of Darlington to host her big day at Redworth Hall hotel.

Michelle and her partner Paul Constable, who have been together for three years, are both in the Royal Navy and planning their wedding could have been difficult had it not been for the support of Redworth Hall’s staff. Michelle said: “I was actually serving in Afghanistan when we first started planning the wedding but thankfully Paul got a lot of support from the Redworth team, as well as our family and friends.” Michelle and Paul were joined by 83 guests for their wedding at Redworth Hall, with around 100 joining the evening celebrations. Michelle said: “The day itself was absolutely perfect. Because there’s so much space at Redworth Hall we were able to have a string quartet, a fun casino and even a bouncy castle for the kids. “I only wish I could do it all again.”
