from the EDITOR Go BIG!
When a quilt needs to be done quickly, is there an easier way to accomplish that goal than to work larger? Bigger patch sizes, big blocks, and pre-cuts all help you finish faster—and that’s what this issue is all about! If you want a pattern with large blocks, look no further than Picnic Star by Jen Daly. With these 20-inch blocks, she recreated the look of buffalo plaid by pairing medium and light solids of the same color with white. The chambray she used for the background makes for a sturdy quilt—perfect for picnics. I wish you all could see this one in person. Fast Lane designed by Angie Milligan, made by Rita Swain, and quilted by Lisa Beeson is colorful, bold, and graphic. This quilt is perfect for a beginner because it is made with large trianglesquares. I love how colorful and scrappy this quilt is. If you are an Alias Grace fan, don’t miss Paradise Among the Trees by Nicole Brooks. Inspired by the quilts in the book and series, she decided to modernize the classic Tree of Paradise quilt pattern. The whopping 32-inch blocks in this quilt still have the feel of the original design, but the large patches will help you finish so much faster. She actually made this quilt twice. The first version has a traditional feel and a nod to the time period of the book. The second quilt uses bright fabrics to give the quilt pattern a more modern feel. I hope you enjoy this issue and all of the bright colors. Happy spring and happy quilting!

BOOT CAMP Have you ever wished a block was a different size? How will you determine the size of the patches? Where to begin? It’s not as difficult as you might think—let’s get started!
Understanding the Grid It’s helpful to understand that most geometric blocks fit into a grid. We have placed a grid on top of Block A below. You can see that the grid is 4 x 4. For the original 12" block, the finished size of each square in the grid is 12" ÷ 4 = 3". To easily resize the block, pick a new finished block size that is evenly divisible by 4—let’s say 8". Then find the finished size of each square in the grid as follows: 8" ÷ 4 = 2". Each square of the grid for an 8" block is 2" finished. To resize the patches, add seam allowances to the new finished size as described in the next section. Another example is Block B. It is on a 3 x 3 grid. For the original 12" block, the finished size of each square in the grid is 12" ÷ 3 = 4". Pick a new finished block size that is evenly divisible by 3—let’s say 15". Each square of the grid size will finish at 5" (15" ÷ 3 = 5"). You need to take this block a step further. If each corner section is 5" and there are 4 patches across the section, divide 5" by 4 and you get 1.25". Each of those square patches is 1¼" finished. It’s not evenly divisible by 4, but it is still a common fraction for rotary cutting.
For quarter-square triangles, add 1¼" to the finished size to get the cut size. finished size + ⅞˝ ¼”

Resizing Appliqué Patterns To resize appliqué, use a copy machine to reduce or enlarge the pattern. You can figure the proportion (the size of one block in relation to the size of another block) with an easy formula: New size ÷ Original size × 100 = Proportion (as a percentage) Let’s say we want to adapt an appliqué pattern on a 12" background into one that fits on a 9" background. Here’s how the formula would work. 9" ÷ 12" = .75 x 100 = 75% The formula reveals that the new appliqué pattern is 75% of the original.
Block A
Block B
Understanding Seam Allowance So far we’ve considered only the finished size of patches. Once the calculations above are done, seam allowances still need to be added. For squares and rectangles, it’s pretty straightforward: take the finished size of the patch and add ½" to get the cutting dimensions. For half-square triangles (also called triangle-squares), add 7⁄8" to the finished size to get the cut size.
8 | Fons & Porter’s Quick + Easy Quilts April/May 2021
If you wanted to enlarge the 12" appliqué background to 15", it would work like this: 15 ÷ 12 = 1.25 x 100 = 125% The new 15" appliqué is 125% of the original 12" appliqué. Today’s copiers give you the option of enlarging or reducing by percentage. To reduce a 12" appliqué block’s patches to fit in a 9" block, make a copy at 75%. To enlarge the patches for a 15" block, make a copy at 125%. Note: After calculating the new cutting size for appliqué backgrounds, it is helpful to add 1" to allow for the stitching. Then trim to the needed size after appliqué.

Foundations: Special Considerations
Understanding Fractions and Decimals
Resize foundation patterns using proportion in the same way as appliqué patches. There is one main difference related to seam allowances. When a foundation is enlarged or reduced using a copier, the seam allowances will be enlarged or reduced as well. So enlarge or reduce the foundation as desired, ignoring what happens to the area outside the seamline. Then to the “body” of the foundation, add ¼" on all sides for the seam allowance, as shown in red below.
It’s useful to know about fraction to decimal conversion, too. Here are the fractions commonly used by quilters, converted to decimals.

A
great way to make a graphic quilt—even if you are a beginner—is by carefully choosing
colors in a simple quilt pattern. The result is bold and fun. And ten inch squares are all you need to get started!
Rita paired triangle-squares of like colors to create the look of giant Flying Geese. Look at the photos and note that all paired units aren’t necessarily made from the same print. Instead she pairs units in the same color with different prints to create visual interest. You could create even more interest using a quilting design that exaggerates the motion of the points.

Plan It’s easy to recreate the bright, bold look of this effortless quilt. Study the photos and note how scrappy this quilt really is. While we give instructions for exactly 36 blocks, Rita made extra blocks to create visual interest. She made a second quilt with the leftovers. Use an accurate ¼" seam allowance throughout to ensure all elements of the quilt fit together well.

SQ UA R ED A G A IN inspired by ripples
designed and made by JEN SCHAFER quilted by TRACY VEGLAHN
M
y inspiration came from one of my favorite places to be: the lake. Every summer we spend a week at the family cabin in Northern Minnesota.
Every year we get at least one rain storm that comes through. Our cabin is on the east side of the lake, so we can always see it coming.
This year though, the storm sat on the other side of the lake, and I was able to sit on the dock and just watch the clouds. However, that isn’t where the inspiration came from. It came from one single raindrop that hit the lake right in front of me. I think we can all agree that a drop of water and the ripples that follow are mesmerizing. I wanted to design something that would represent that, but I didn’t want to use the quilting to show it. I wanted it to be a part of the pattern. I love curves, but I also like to design for beginners—and curves can be off-putting. After staring at my rough drawing of ripples so long they started to actually ripple, I changed that drop of water to a square and immediately Squared Again was born.

This quilt is reminiscent of an oversized Economy block. It’s perfect for showing off a pretty fabric you’ve been saving.
Fabric yardage assumes 40" usable width of fabric (WOF) unless otherwise noted.
Tip from Jen: We are sewing a lot of seams on the bias with this pattern and I recommend starching fabrics before cutting. It’s also important to remember the bias when pressing seams, making sure not to stretch them out by pushing with your iron. Use an accurate ¼" seam allowance throughout to ensure all elements of the quilt fit together well. Handle all bias edges carefully to avoid distortion.

am always fascinated by theses sayings that we hear so often and where they originate. Did you
know that the saying “April showers bring May flowers” actually originated from a poem? Do you know when that poem was written? 1157. WOW!
That saying has been around for quite some time and when I heard it, I thought to myself “some things never change” and I find that comforting. Every year is going to pass with each season. Things are going to grow, bloom, and then hibernate for a season. I created this sweet pattern from this sweet saying that has been around for many, many generations just as quilting has been around for many generations. There is also something very comforting in that. May our spring showers be blessed with new beginnings.

O NE B IG STA R stitch up a galaxy of triangle-squares designed and made by RAMONA SORENSEN
A
sk any of my quilting friends—the first advice I usually give them is this: What do you already
know how to do and what else can it be? There are many, many ways to create or stitch up a quilt block. Find a way that is inspires you or is made with your favorite technique.
I took my own advice. One day I decided to sit down with a notebook and sketch as many different ways of making a traditional quilt block as I could. The idea that really caught my attention was how many different ways you can arrange half-square triangles. Suddenly I thought “what else can I do with this?” How many traditional quilt blocks can I make using the half-square triangles? Can I divide the block patches up in ways to make the half-square triangles work? What if I made the block REALLY BIG? I mean really, really big—one block for the whole quilt big! Yes, absolutely!

Ramona’s quilt pattern is perfect for using up those delightful packs of 10" squares that follow you home from the quilt shop. However, you can also make this scrappy beauty with yardage. We give instructions for both so you can make this quilt no matter what fabric path you choose. Note that the A squares are a different size if you use yardage. Triangle-Squares will measure 8½" unfinished no matter which method you use. Follow Ramona’s tip below for trimming if you use pre-cuts.
Fabric yardage assumes 40" usable width of fabric (WOF) unless otherwise noted.
Patches are lettered in order of use. Measurements include ¼" seam allowances. Border strips will be pieced and cut to exact length needed. You may want to make them longer to allow for piecing variations.

98" x 98" Tip from Ramona: You can use an 8½" ruler as a custom-sized triangle-square ruler. I aligned the diagonal line on the rulers with my stitching line and trimmed the block, then pressed it open. The best thing was not needing to double-check prior to cutting to make sure I was using the correct line on the ruler. Use an accurate ¼" seam allowance throughout to ensure all elements of the quilt fit together well.

PRODUCTS
New products and classic favorites– inspiration from our studio to yours!
We asked our editors how they handle big blocks and quilts. How do they square up the edges of large quilts? From large ironing surfaces to rulers, this compiled list of time-tested products is sure to help you work with large blocks and square-up your quilts with more accuracy!
Squaring up large blocks is easy with the Creative Grids 20½" Square Quilt Ruler. This large ruler features easy-to-read black and white markings printed in 1 ⁄8 and ¼ inch increments. The ruler slides easily over the fabric until pressure is applied. Then, their exclusive gripper holds the fabric in place while cutting, eliminating slipping and miss-cuts.
A 60mm rotary cutter, like the one by Quilter’s Select, is perfect for thicker layers of fabric. You can cut up to 6 layers of fabric at a time. It is also ideal for trimming the edge of your quilt prior to binding because it is weighted like a chef knife for added stability. Of note, it has a unique design that ensures precise cutting whether you are left- or right-handed.
Sew Steady Tables expand the area around your sewing machine so your fabric or quilt sandwich stays flat. The Sew Steady Wish Table is made of high-quality acrylic and features a rounded front edge for comfort, underneath storage, and an inches and metric ruler printed on the underside of table. Because it is clear, it also does double-duty as a lightbox.

“I love my Extra-Large Wool Pressing Mat from Mountain Mist. It is 24" x 48"—HUGE! Also, the Ruler Connector Set from Fiskars. It allows you to connect two acrylic rulers together so you can make larger cuts. Pretty cool!” ~ Tracy Mooney, Editor
Guidelines 4 Quilters Guidelines Ruler Connector allows you to connect your rulers for longer cuts and squaring corners. Each connector aligns two guideline rulers and features a built-in handle for comfort and ease of use. Be sure to check out their rulers that have a fabric guide that catches the fabric’-s edge for perfect alignment, making it great for repeated cutting of widths.
Fiskars helps you double your cutting length with the easy-touse 3-piece Ruler Connector Set. A connector bridges and holds together two acrylic rulers of any size for longer cuts. Tip: Pressing down on the tension handle not only ensures a tight grip between rulers, but serves as a comfortable hand rest while cutting. The set comes with the connector and two clear acrylic rulers.

The Extra-Large Wool Pressing Mat from Mountain Mist is the biggest of its size. This 24" x 48" mat absorbs heat as you press, so when pressing your quilt block it’s as if you are pressing on both sides of the fabric at the same time. The dense, ½" thick, tightly felted, firm pressing mat is also available in a variety of other sizes. mountainmistcrafts.com
“I find a lot of uses for my 48" metal ruler, purchased many years ago at a hardware store. I like it much better than a wood or plastic yardstick because it doesn’t bend or warp. It also works well for blocking quilts.” ~ Annette Falvo, Technical Editor
“You’ll laugh, but I use my husband Bake’s metal carpenter’s square to square up large quilts. I wash it well (because who knows what he used it for). I lay it on the outside just off the edge of the quilt. Then place a quilting ruler up against the carpenter’s square. Slide the square away and cut. You have a perfect square corner.” ~ Lori Baker, Acquisitions Editor

PAR ADIS E AMO N G T H E TR EE S inspired by Alias Grace designed and made by NICOLE BROOKS
I
was watching the Netflix mini-series Alias Grace. It is based on the book by the same name written
by Margaret Atwood. The main character Grace, an avid quilter, names Tree of Paradise as one of the quilts a lady must complete by the time she marries.
I wanted to take this traditional large half-square triangle intensive quilt and modernize it. I saw the traditional quilt with two different color triangles as two families coming together in marriage. However, marriages are more than just two people coming together. Often kids, grandparents, dogs, cats, ex-spouses, and numerous other people all come together to create the family dynamic. It is this extensive family dynamic from both sides which is united through marriage. The numerous trees in my quilt represent all these people that form a family. It also shows that there is not just one paradise tree. Of note: The book was set in the 1800s in Canada. Grace was accused and convicted of murder. But throughout the series, it appears she may be innocent.

My big advice to beginner quilters is to choose quilts you love and pick quilts that help you focus on one new skill or technique. PI CN IC STAR S a sunny quilt for warm days
designed and made by JEN DALY
I
love this quilt because it features giant versions of my favorite quilt block paired with buffalo plaid—
which I can't get enough of—and because it's quick, colorful, and casual. It’s perfect for spring picnics!
My projects usually feature small-scale, scrappy blocks, but for this quilt I wanted to experiment with oversized blocks—and I thought Sawtooth Stars would be an ideal place to start. The scale of the blocks, 20" square, gave me the opportunity to add some additional piecing to the center squares of the stars and I decided to use solids to create homemade buffalo plaid. With spring picnics in mind, I chose bright, cheerful colors for the star blocks and paired them with casual and durable chambray.

Cut
To create the look of plaid for this quilt, you will need to plan your colors carefully. We give yardage requirements for 9 medium solids and 9 matching light solids. Choose whatever nine colors that make you happy and then find lighter values of those colors to make the buffalo plaid.
Fabric yardage assumes 40" usable width of fabric (WOF) unless otherwise noted.
Patches are lettered in order of use. Measurements include ¼" seam allowances. Border strips will be pieced and cut to exact length needed. You may want to make them longer to allow for piecing variations.
Tip from Jen: Chambray can shrink quite a bit and bleed, so it’s important to pre-wash it before use. I also pre-wash the solids I use, but separately from the chambray. Use an accurate ¼" seam allowance throughout to ensure all elements of the quilt fit together well.

hile both sets of my grandparents were farmers, I lived just two miles from my
father’s parents. Oh, the memories I have of going to their dairy farm most every Saturday afternoon at 3:00 pm for “lunch.” There would be freshbaked bars—usually 2 pans—because, according to Grandma, the first pan “didn’t turn out good enough.” I never understood that statement as each pan tasted the same to me and my 15 cousins that would show up. The bars would be served with cold milk fresh from the dairy bulk tank and mixed with a spoonful of dry powdered chocolate milk mix! I still buy this for myself when I am feeling nostalgic.
This set of grandparents lived in a classic Midwestern white farmhouse. And yes, at times the paint was peeling off, as there was much work to be done on the farm. I remember the long hedge of Bridal Veil bushes that separated the house from the farmyard. Such a sweet little white flower cluster that would adorn the bush. There would be violets all around the base of the bushes until their German Shepherd named King—it was always King even if they got a new dog, but I digress— would lay under the bushes to stay cool in the summer, waiting to greet us all as we would walk down the sidewalk to come for lunch.

When I found this nostalgic fabric line from Hoffman Fabrics called Vintage Farmhouse by McKenna Ryan, it’s like it was meant to be used by me for this memory. Spring Violets in the blocks, peeling white paint in the background and sashing, and then that amazing white fence fabric! I hope you enjoy this little trip down memory lane with me.

Plan Big blocks and easy piecing make quick work of this delightful quilt by Terri Vanden Bosch. Note that Terri used stripe for the border that is cut on the lengthwise grain to take advantage of the fabric print. If you do not use a directional print, you only need 11⁄8 yards of fabric for the border. Use an accurate ¼" seam allowance throughout to ensure all elements of the quilt fit together well.
