This thesis investigates the current under representation of design solutions in the Australian market for people living with hearing impairment. In Australia, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, 1 in 6 Australians live with some kind of hearing impairment, translating an estimated 30,000 individuals. Compared with design solutions available to people living with mobility impairment, the solutions offered to people with hearing impairment are often limited and require unique solutions for quality of living. The research conducted identifies the difficulties that people living with hearing impairments commonly incur, and current solutions offered. It identifies the importance of communication through visual prompts and aims to further extend the catalogue of aids for the hearing impaired through the use of architectural design. Offered in the thesis are solutions that will aid people with hearing impairments move more safely through spaces through chamfering of circulation wall corners, communicate easily with others by creating open and visually connected spaces which collectively help to build confidence in their domestic environment.

The proposal for this studio is about to design a performing school in Dockland, Melbourne. The performing school is a contemporary dance school where the place is located in the crossing of Wurundjeri Way and Siddeley Street in North Wharf. The place currently is transition place between South Wharf and North Wharf where the No.5 Goods Shed and the Mission to Seafarers are situated. Dockland Contemporary Dance School is a dancing school open for public and students. It is including 2 theatres and 5 dance studios (2 of them can be rented by public) as well as other essential required functional space by a dancing school. The idea of the design comes out from contemporary dance history. Referring from Cunningham’s key ideas, contemporary dance is a creative freedom dance form, which generated from classical ballet dance and refused some traditional techniques. It is presented with unpredictable changes in rhythm, speed and direction. The form of contemporary dance can be seen as a breakthrough form traditions. Basing on these valuations, the designing idea is going capture the breakthrough moment. Reflected to my haptic object, which I designed a belt that keeping me away from foods, I also set a base for building representing the traditions, the box with normal continuous floor plates. In order to achieve breakthrough as well as continuous visual connection, strategies of split floors and tearing skin were given to internal and external respectively. Moreover, different transparent glass is used for various visual experience from room to room, between inside and outside.

This studio has two phases. The first phase is to design gallery for 5 five picked artists based on their quote from their interview. The aim of this phase is trying to find different ways helping artists express their works as well as themselves. The second phase of the studio is allocating 5 different gallery into 5 different locations all around the world (places were not specified). By following the picked quote from one of the curators’ interview, 5 museums are designed for placing the 5 galleries relatively.

This project is about a Design Development Proposal with Key Envelope Details for a Free-Standing Office Tower located in a hypothetical site in Melbourne CBD. This project is a teamwork project including some individual tasks.
