INTRODUCTION
From the statistic, there are over 80,000 people moving in Melbourne every year and the population may be up form 4.1 million to 6.5 million by 2050. With the growing of Melbournian, the expansion of the city is essential. Sub area around CBD like Dockland and Fishermans Bend are all be planned to be the potential city expansion. Dockland, a place used to be the extension of city is now being recognized as a failure of its urban plan. Fishermans Bend, an industrial based area on the opposite of Dockland across the Yarra River at the southwest of
Melbourne CBD is now being asked for ideas of good renewal planning for CBD expansion. This new part of CBD should not only provide living space for 80,000 residents and opportunities for 40,000 jobs but also rebuilt the place from a industrial disused into a livable place with multi-functions. In this semester, our group of two will under investigate one of four divided area - SANDIRDGE in Fishermans Bend and design a future plan for this precinct.
SANDRIDGE Precinct (Yellow area) is located in the middle among the four precincts. Wirraway Precinct and Montague Precinct are at the west and east of SANDRIDGE precinct. At the south, there are huge general residential area and Port Phillip Bay is on the south. Lorimer precinct is at the north of SANDRIDGE Precinct while there is a freeway in the middle influence the travel ability between two precincts.

After the Fisherman Bend renewal plan, more than 18,000 residents and over 4,000 jobs will be targeted as a goal. A huge increase in both residential and commercial space will be required. People who share different backgrounds start to interact with each other. The harmony of this newly formed community will be an essential element for the development of the new CBD. With different culture, different life-style and different ideas jump into each other, idea of urban hybridization should be introduced on the renewal plan in order to meet the harmony. In the old urban planning, Le Corbusier’s “Zoning” idea always challenged by social issue of community disconnection. These planned functional districts let the space's operation monotonies and shape people’s activates rhythm less and no interaction with other people. Urban hybridization as “Rhizome”, which was presented out by Deleuze & Guattari, metaphoric the single functional zoning as the piece of rhizome, they can rise welly, but if grow them together, they will get other pieces’ advantages and grow stronger and better. A living community is complex, elements like commercial benefit, social struggles as well as culture difference are not individual sector. There are invisible chains among them and need to be considered together. Put the views on FishERmans Bend Renewal plan, the target is to achieve a community where residence space and jobs should be provided. Instead of make distinguish boundary of commercial and residential area, the mix use is the better solution which also has entertaining facilities and fundamental infrastructure installed. The hybridization of functions which mix residential, commercial and entertaining space together can also let people keep a better contact with each other.
Moreover, as Jane Jacob’s idea reflected from the death and life of American cities, city should not only serve citizens with primary function but also should let people use same facilities at different time and increase its intense usability. As the density and capacity of this area is growing up, how to control the growth of both density and capacity is critical. According to FARMX & KM3, by creating a vertical suburbia's, staking up “blocks” could solve some of the problems such as increasing the capacity and density within a new city planning. The fisherman bend renewal plan would be a very good opportunities to test the possibilities of hybridization through the verticality. To avoid the failure of dockland, putting the infrastructure in the early stage will be ideal. Furthermore, the renewal planning will also need to be in “human scale“. Therefore, how infrastructure interact with residents is very important. By not looking into the articles, some examples that done by Zaha Hadid and MVRDV have seem to have similar response on these issue. The Beko Factory done by Zaha Hadid has started the fashion of how building could link different function parts together. In her design, people can go from the skyway, which linked between the residential part (hotel) and public space, to other places. It has been so inspirited that through the sky walk, it not only benefit the residents, but also making people to interact with each other. In some sense, it has accelerate the speed of hybridization within a certain zone. In our site, it would be a fantastic idea to accelerate the hybridization.
