The Samurai Re-Imagined explores the roots of the popular Japanese art forms of manga (graphic novels) and anime (animation) in the traditional arts of Japan by examining images of the iconic warrior, the samurai. By juxtaposing depictions of samurai in Edo era woodblock prints, ink paintings, historical photographs, animation cels and drawings, original manga panels, and toys, the exhibition will demonstrate the ongoing links between fine art and popular culture in Japan. Our trip to the museum will take place on Saturday, July 25, 2009
STUF FOR CLUBS QUESTION OF THE MONTH Our last newsletter’s question was: “What series features the best spring/summer celebration episode?” Here’s what some of you had to say: “For me, the best series with a summer vacation/party would be Ouran High School Host Club. It may have multiple vacation theme episodes, but each one is memorable in its own way.” Rachel H., Gustavus Adolphus Anime and Manga Society
Rurouni Kenshin (detail) By Kazuhiro Furuhashi, Japan, 20th century, Animation production cel (paint on cellulose), On loan by Charles Solomon
“The best spring/summer celebration episode has to be that of Azumanga Daioh. It was just hilarious and has remained one of my favorite episodes for years now…” Jamey R., EML Anime Club

“My favorite spring/summer celebration episode would be from the anime The Wallflower… What a crazy funfilled episode! Amber Y., Anime Brigade In the past few weeks, there’s been a lot of chatter about possible North American versions of popular anime and manga series, like Full Metal Panic! and Death Note, not to mention the pending Cowboy Bebop movie starring Keanu Reeves. This month’s question: “What anime or manga series would you like to see receive the Hollywood treatment, and who would you cast in the lead roles?” Send your responses to animeclubs@rightstuf.com, and we’ll hand-pick a few responses for our next newsletter!
SKY CRAWLERS Plot Summary: Kannami Yuichi is a "Kildren", a fighter pilot recently sent to Urisu Base to replace a previous one who had died in battle. Like the numerous genetically-engineered pilots before him, he does not age, only to live his life fighting and eventually dying in battle. Rostock and Lautern, 2 different companies have been engaged in a brutal war that has no beginning or end, rather the battles they create serve to "entertain" the peacetime people. Yuichi befriends the base commander, Kusanagi Suito, a woman who endures a long dark past. As their relationship grows, Yuichi learns the bittersweet moments of life, and the inescapable fate he has been placed in.
MY HEAVENLY HOCKEY CLUB Hana Suzuki loves only two things in life: eating and sleeping. So when handsome classmate Izumi Oda asks Hana–his major crush–to join the school hockey club, persuading her proves to be a difficult task. True, the Grand Hockey Club is full of boys– and all the boys are super-cute–but given a choice, Hana prefers a sizzling steak to a hot date. Then Izumi mentions the field trips to fancy resorts. Now Hana can’t wait for the first away game, with its promise of delicious food and luxurious linens. Of course there’s also the getting up early, working hard, and playing well with others. How will Hana survive?

The story unfolds in another 'possible' modern age. The main characters are youngsters called "Kildren", who are destined to live eternally in their adolescence. The Kildren are conscious that every day could be the last, because they fight a "war as entertainment" organized and operated by adults. But as they embrace the reality they are faced with, they live their dayto-day lives to the full. Special Features: The Sound Design and Animation of The Sky Crawlers, Animation Research for The Sky Crawlers. Spoken Languages: English, Japanese, English subtitles.

Cipher Plot Summary: This is a book about two twins named Siva and Cipher, who since entering high school have taken turns going to school and work as a model/actor under the name "Siva." When a girl at school finds this out she is not given a reason, but instead a two week basis in which she lives with them to try and be able to tell them apart without asking. At the end of the two weeks if able to tell the brothers apart, they have agreed to tell her the reason why they switch off. Othello Plot Summary: Yaya's high school friends haven't been very nice. They call her "Yaya the cry-ya! Yaya the misfi-ya!" But no matter how badly they act, Yaya is just too naive and trusting to believe the worst of her friends. Hard-rocking, butt-kicking Nana is just the girl to grab hold of Yaya's timid demeanor and turn it upside down. Nana exposes Yaya's "friends" as slime bags, doles out punishment, and does it all with style. Can there be anything that terminally shy Yaya and hyper-confident Nana have in common? Well, for one thing, they're the same person... Devil Does Exist, the Plot Summary: High school is hard for Kayano. When she tries to confess her love to the kind-but-distant Yuichi, the school bully Takeru makes her life hell. But things get worse when Kayano's mother gets engaged to Takeru's father, the school principal! How will she cope with having the devil himself living in her own home? Saito Kayano's mother and Edogawa Takeru's father dive into their blissful marriage, as mother and daughter move into the Edogawa household. But things aren't so blissful for Kayano and her new stepbrother, a tortured and complicated kid who switches from being a heartless bully to protective, caring friend. And despite herself, Kayano finds herself falling in love with him! Now Kayano must deal with a new family and new relationship, while she tries to cope with feelings she doesn't understand.

Anime Network Taken Off Comcast, Put on DirecTV (Updated) A.D. Vision's Anime Network television service has announced on its web forum on Friday that it will no longer be available on the Comcast cable service provider in the United States. At the same time, The Anime Network announced it is available on the VOD service from the DirecTV satellite television provider. The network is also offering the first five episodes of the Kiba, Mezzo, and Azumanga Daioh anime series on the Ovi Phone Service for select Nokia phones. Thank you to Prede for the news tip. Update: The American anime distributor Funimation put its Funimation Anime video-on-demand content on Comcast earlier this month. This move coincided with the removal of Comcast's own Anime Selects package from the same cable provider. The Anime Network was available as one of DirecTV's Pay per View Channels in 2006. It later became part of DirecTV's Video On Demand offerings.

Summary: Based on the popular game series, Sengoku Basara features powerful fighters with cool character designs and amazing abilities, and doubtless some kind of plotline to thread them together. Of course, the primary characters are the same as the game: historical warlords Sanada Yukimura and Date Masamune. Oda Nobunaga also makes a cameo!

Your father places three beautiful, elegant, eligible young bachelors in front of you and tells you to marry one of them. Dutiful daughter that you are, you start to get to know the three fellows (who apparently later become four): Li Ren Fong, Carl Rosenthal, Eugene Alexander du Volcan, and Rumati Ivan Dai Raginei. Why do rich people always have superlong names in anime? Title: Sengoku Basara • Starts: Thursday, April 2 at 1:34am, on CBC
Title: Shangri La • Starts: Monday, April 6 at 12am, on ChibaTV • Genre: Action/Mystery • Studio: Gonzo • Director: Makoto Bessho Summary: In a “neo-futuristic” (their words, not mine!) world, the tower city of Atlas is home to the wealthy-- and to ancient secrets. A colorful cast of characters including, but not limited to a “riotous” teen girl, a little princess, a child genius, and a drag queen, investigate the matters.
