THE VERTICAL STREETSCAPE CONNIE WANG | B.ARCH ‘16 A R C H E O LO G I E S O F T H E F U T U R E M U S E U M

In the context of over 117 museums within the city of Athens, Greece, where there is an abundance of places for exhibiting the richness of its culture and history, this project proposes a new form of the stereotypical museum by addressing, challenging, and redefining the characteristics, both symbolically and socially, that surrounds a museum. Taking into consideration the particular social and economic stresses that Athens has been undergoing, this ‘museum’ is designed to reinforce and give strength to the steady growth and reformation taking place right now. This museum is a collection of places, a display of the culture and the everyday life of the Athenian, the tourist, and simply the curious, where the ramps and circulation space of the structure is exactly the exhibition space that ultimately brings you up to an observatory that gives visitors access to some of the most spectacular views of Athens and experience the city at a height, location, and fashion that is unprecedented. Sited directly across the Hellenic Parliament and Syntagma Square—perhaps the most symbolic and important square of Modern Athens historically and socially— naturally calls for a platform of the social exchange between the local citizens and the tourist, an intersection of the two, the weaving of communities. Situated in-between the two largest hills of Athens, Philopappos Hill and Mount Lycaettus, where the height of the Acropolis has always been the governor of all height restrictions imposed onto new buildings, the museum rises beyond the city to not only provide a completely new vantage point of the city now that it is physically in the center of it all.

Replacing an existing abandoned office and bank, this proposal incorporates unconventional programmatic elements of a typical museum, but includes programs such as a hotel, a series of cafes and restaurants, and market and retail spaces that are typical to the immediate context. The museum’s typical programmatic elements, such as an auditorium, media space, café, and museum shop are camouflaged and weaved within the ‘hotel core’, blurring the definition and boundaries of the private ‘guest only’ mentality of a hotel. In bringing the urban functions that normally occur on street level vertically upwards, a vertical streetscape created a way to address new forms of social behaviours and interactions, the display of a culture in the future.
