ARTIST STATEMENT OF THÉ AMO TEA PACKAGING

7

“Thé Amo is a soft blend of boutique tea in three mixes containing Blueberry, Rosehip, and Green Apple. “

The name Thé Amo is word play of the French word for tea Thé (pronounced Ti) and the Italian word Amo which means love. In Italian, “Ti Amo” means I love you. The packaging for each blend will be coloured differently to reflect the colour of the fruits flavouring the tea.

Thé Amo packaging

The packaging will be rectangular to facilitate placement on shelves. The logo is hand drawn to evoke the hand-made, boutique feel of the packaging and of the tea. The wreaths represent tea leaves. The aim is to achieve a light, fresh look much like the tea blends. The descriptions on the packaging will use a sans serif font to keep information simple and clearly legible. The tea blends will be in a plain sans serif font. The colours co-ordinate with the tea fruits and will reflect the boutique feel via the translucency of the watercolours. Materials used: • Watercolours and ink for the logo • 250gsm cardstock for the box and teabag tag • Muslin teabag • 1 hand writing font • 1 sans serif font in various weights In summary, the packaging is to reflect the boutique, hand crafted feel of the tea and the uniqueness of the blends giving the whole a cottage style with a touch of modern minimalism.

Lots of Ideas

I started working on the tea packaging assignment as soon as the course profile was released so that I could get an early start. My original idea involved obtaining materials from Japan.

I astarted working on the assignment as soon as the course profile was released because once I saw that the assignment was about tea, I wanted to make the assignment about Matcha which is the Japanese traditional green tea powder. Although the green tea powder can be easily obtained in Australia, I could not find the the whisk and spoon used for the traditional tea ceremony. These items had to be imported from Japan. I am fortunate to have friends in Japan and I enlisted their help to obtain the whisk and spoon. With this in mind, we discussed the best way to go about it and two weeks later, I had a whisk and a spoon.

The original idea was to have three powdered tea flavours:- Green tea, Orange and Strawberry. The teas were to be powder but move away from the traditional green tea. Later, when I saw how many students were also making their assignments with Japanese overtones, I changed my mind about Matcha and decided to design the packaging for boutique, organic teas. Once I had a clear path, I went ahead and worked out the concept that would be used for the tea packaging. I will still be using the items I purchased for the photography session if they fit the tone but the assignment took a different direction very quickly.

Initial sketch.

I knew I wanted a boutique, organic feel to the logo drawing so the initial sketches involved faux calligraphy and wreaths to represent the tea leaves. The fruit colours were would be reflected in the logo name. To achieve this, I used calligraphy skills to sketch the initial word outlines and then added the additional down stroke lines.

The outlines were then scanned and I used the pen tool in Illustrator to duplicate the logo outline. Once in Illustrator, I could adjust until I was happy with the outlines. Once I was happy with the outlines, I could print the outlines on watercolour paper for painting.

Once the tea flavours were chosen, working out the colours for the palette was easy.

Once the tea flavours were selected, working out the colour palette became simple. However, the tea flavours were adjusted to ensure that the colours did not clash. For example, a banana colour would not have suited the blueberry and green apple. The selected flavours are Blueberry, Rosehip and Green Apple. The colours for the logo were two shades for each plus an olive green for the wreath surrounding the logo. The logo was drawn, transformed into vectors in Illustrator and printed on watercolour paper. It was then coloured with watercolour pencils and brushed with water. The result is an ombre style of light colour descending into a darker shade. The leaves of the wreaths were coloured in Olive Green.

FIRST TEMPLATE CONSTRUCTION AND THE MISTAKES “ The first template design didn’t work out. The cut and fold lines were too dark and the joins were at the front and could be seen when the box was put together. It was too messy and needed rethinking. I retained the same measurements (8cm wide, 6cm deep and 12 cm high) but rearranged the panels so that the glued joint is at the back. “

3. A brief history of

the name selection is stated on one of the side panels.

The second template was designed differently. This time, the front, sides, and back panels were designed to meet at the back so that the join would not show when the product is displayed at the front.

The pen tool was used to draw the outlines of the box and the dashed fold lines. Opacity was reduced to a bare minimum so they could not be seen in the final product. In production, the laser cutter and folding machine would take care of the cut lines and fold lines.

The second template was designed differently. This time, the front, sides, and back panels were designed to meet at the back so that the join would not show when the product is displayed at the front. Each panel was assigned a different function. Front panel - the front panel shows the logo and flavour name plus the number of tea bags in the box and weight of product. Left Side Panel - This panel show a brief description of the tea propeties and health benefits. Right Side Panel - A brief history of the name is stated on the right side panel. Top Panel - the front logo is repeated at 60% of size of the front logo. Bottom Panel - The bottom panel is reserved for the “Best Before date, Lot Number and the product bar code.

“ In order to make the product realistic, the properties and health benefits of the fruits in the teas were researched and a panel of the box was used to explain the properties and health benefits of the teas. “ Green apples - Green Apples are high in fiber and help keep the digestive tract clean and healthy. They are rich in vitamins and all forms of antioxidants. They help purify the blood, help with memory enhancement, help with the prevention of gall stones, and the control and cure of rheumatism. Green apples are also beneficial in diminishing skin conditions. Rosehip - Rose hips are the round portion of the rose flower just below the petals. This portion of the plant is rich in vitamin C which has many beneficial uses such as preventing colds and flus.

Rose hips are also used for stomach disorders such as stomach spasms, stomach acid deficiency, and ulcers, and as a “stomach tonic” for some intestinal diseases. Blueberries - Blueberries are low in terms of their glycemic index (GI), have beneficial effects on brain function and assist to reduce cognitive decline. They are low in calories, rich in vitamins and all forms of antioxidants. Blueberries can help ward off urinary tract infections. They contain substances that inhibit bacteria from binding to bladder tissue. Likewise, the ingredients panel was worded for a realistic effect and customised for each fruit.
