Natural Insecto Products
I
NSECTO is an insecticide alternative to chemical poison’s used for control of grain insects and house insects. INSECTO has been registered with the USA Environmental Protection Agency since 1984 (EPA Reg. # 48598-1). INSECTO is a formulation of a very refined (Micron average size 7) saltwater Diatomaceous Earth (DE) blended with several protein food products which act as baits. DE is the skeletal remains of plankton which feels similar to talcum powder, however when viewed under a microscope, one can see the sharp jagged edges on the DE which basically cuts up and breaks down insects waxy protective coatings. Also, the saltwater DE absorbs up to 175% of its weight in fluids compared to only 150% for freshwater DE. DE is allowed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in Human and Animal food products up to 2% of weight; it is used as an AntiCaking agent in many food products.
INSECTO kills insects by cutting up the insects bodies, than absorbs their body fluids, which leads to their deaths by dehydration; a physical kill rather than a chemical kill. Insects don’t build up a resistance to INSECTO, unlike chemical pesticides. INSECTO is labeled with the EPA “For Organic Production” and is listed with the Organic Material Review Institute (OMRI).
INSECTO has been and is being used by Bunge, Cargill, Consolidated Grain & Barge, ADM and other large companies for several decades, along with on farm storage by thousands for farmers
around the United States and Canada. INSECTO has been exported to Japan, UAE, Israel, Jamaica, Brazil, Nicaragua, and several other countries. INSECTO is now being used in Poultry Housing for control of Mites, Darkling Beetles, Lesser Mealworms and other insects which plague this industry. Insects in poultry houses are destroying the insulations as well as adversely affecting the health of the birds. INSECTO should be blown in at a rate up to 4 pounds per 1,000 square feet of surface area. INSECTO was originally developed as an alternative to the chemical poisons which were in wide use in the 1970’s and 80’s, and has become one of the few registered insecticides on the market today. Control your insect problems today and in the future with INSECTO. e

Preparing For Difficult Growing Conditions And Beyond
Starter Fertilizers Can Make A Difference! Noel Garcia, CCA Senior Consultant, TPS Lab
C
old, wet weather with low PAR light and few or shortened growing degree-days has made 2019 a disastrous year for agriculture in many parts of the United States. It has delayed planting in some areas and prevented planting in others – all resulting in a shortened growing season. Much of the same has been predicted for 2020. Developing a plan to mitigate the effects of difficult field conditions is essential for the farmer to survive and crops will need all the help they can get at the very start. So, what do we do to play catch-up and even avoid having to replant? “Pop-Up”/Starter Fertilizers can be game-changers to your ultimate success. Getting your crop off to a healthy, strong start is more important than ever in persistently poor conditions. Conditions such as compaction, crusting, cold soil temperatures, salinity and wet/dry soils are detrimental to most crops. Achieving good starts with rapid and strong early root development is essential - then followed by in-season monitoring utilizing sap analysis to proactively achieve balanced nutrition. While season-long balanced plant nutrition is needed to minimize plant stress for best yields and quality, phosphorous is the foundation for good roots, early fruiting and uniform maturity. Utilizing proper adjuvants based on soil type is essential for keeping the phosphorus plant-bioavailable for an extended period of time to keep the rhizosphere active during less than ideal conditions. The solubilities of other elements to form compounds holding or binding phosphorous are directly related to soil pH. The pH range of greatest phosphorus availability is 6.0 to 7.0. At a lower pH (< 6.0), when the soil is very acidic, more iron and aluminum are available to form insoluble phosphate compounds. In strongly alkaline soils (> 7.0), more calcium and magnesium are available forming insoluble phosphate resulting less available phosphorus. The use of starter fertilizer is a source of debate for many agronomists. Most growers see the benefit of early uniform harvest but are likely to over-fertilize. There are hazards to using fertilizer in close proximity to the seed and this scaresoff many advisors from recommending it. Like physicians, advisors’ first concern is to “do no harm”. It is easiest to say, “Just Don’t Do it”. But in dire times, the battle for profitability and survival requires stepping out of a traditional “safe” zone. Due to their close proximity to the roots, starter fertilizers 12 • Western Farm, Ranch and Dairy
in particular, with high salt indices are to be avoided, as they cause reverse osmotic pressures on the roots resulting in dehydration of the plant – resulting in stress or death. Accordingly, components of starters must be carefully researched and selected. The risk of seedling injury is higher in sandy soils due to the low CEC of such soils causing more nutrients to remain in solution. The injury risk increases under dry conditions because of higher concentration near the seed for extended periods of time. Salt injury from fertilizers is typically not a problem if fertilizer and plant roots are separated by time, distance, or both. Starter placement for maximum benefit has been shown by research to be most beneficial when germinating seeds’ first roots immediately hit a band of high phosphorous - especially in cold, wet soils. It is safest to place the band of starter fertilizer in-furrow in a 2x2 band (two inches below and two inches on each side of the seed). With this placement, the risk of seedling injury is virtually nonexistent. Be aware that the benefit of early phosphorous decreases by each additional half-inch away from the seed. Seed treatments are now available for sown crops. Dr. F.L. Fisher of Texas A&M University was one of the first researchers in starter fertilizer in the early 1960s. Phosphorous by itself is seldom harmful. It is the other plant nutrients in fertilizer which have high salt that can harm germination and plant growth. Nitrogen, potassium and sulfur have high salt indices and should be kept to a minimum but are beneficial early as are micronutrients such as zinc, iron, manganese, copper and boron in minute amounts. Use fertilizer sources and rates that minimize the chance for injury. In addition to salt injury, some N compounds (such as UAN, urea, and ammonium thiosulfate) produce free ammonia, which can cause poor germination or seedling death. The best fertilizers for seed-row application have a low salt index and N compounds that do not produce free ammonia, and potassium phosphate rather than potassium chloride as the K source. Additions of carbon sources such as humic/fulvic acids, amino acids and sugars also help protect the seed and buffer the fertilizers. They also help keep the fertilizer in a bioavailable form for extended periods - especially in cold or alkaline soils. These carbon sources also feed the soil life thus increasing the microbial activity which slightly raises the soil

Economize on Equipment Costs with a New Kit from Fehr Cab Interiors Co.
A
s new tractors continue to be offered in the ag-market, the cost of new equipment has soared, and it can be hard to budget for upgrading to the latest and the greatest. By installing a new cab interior, it gives you the feeling of having an updated tractor for the next growing season while providing a higher resale value in the future when you do decide to update your equipment line. Trim your spending budget by making a low cost investment on a new cab interior to keep your equipment in the best of shape and looking like new. If the time does come to update or trade in, you want to get top dollar out of your trade in. By installing a Fehr Cab Interiors kit, it gives the purchaser the assurance that you cared about your tractor. By freshening up the cab, the value of the tractor can increase up to 15%. If you have a tractor over 15 years old, the interior has started to show its age and is falling apart. The vinyl gets saggy, and the foam lining in the cab loses all acoustical properties and starts to harden and deteriorate. Fehr Cab has done testing to prove a significant difference in decibels when comparing new and old acoustical foam panels. By replacing the acoustical foam, it silences the high pitched sound decibels that cause damage to your hearing. Fehr Cab is excited to introduce the “Anyone Can Install” cab
kits to their ever-expanding product line. The John Deere 2 wheel drive 30, 40, 50, 55/60 series Sound Guard cabs are available finished onto pre-formed plastic for much easier installation! Also, for the sound guard cabs, the replacement plastic fender fronts and air vent bezels are now available. The IH 86 & IH-88 headliners are also available as a pre-formed “Anyone Can Install” new kit. These new panels will save you up to 4 hours in installation time and you will no longer have the nuisance of having wrinkles develop and adhesive drying too quickly. Most farmers can install these parts into his or her tractor, using Fehr Cab do-it-yourself kits for over 700 different model cabs. Fehr Cab kits are available with pre-cut, pre-sewn, pre-formed panels and complete instructions and whatever is necessary to install kits. Fehr Cab strives to replicate the original vinyl, foam thickness, quality custom fit and overall appearance in all interiors offered. The new interior kits make the cab atmosphere so much more pleasant, clean, and quiet. Fehr Cab installs these interior kits in local customers’ cabs to insure that each part fits and every kit is easy to install. To see how easy our kits are to install, check out our “installation videos” at www.fehrcab.com. Quality materials and superior service is what makes a Fehr Cab kit the best value.

Missouri Hay Tarps Poised For the Future
M
issouri Hay Tarps has been protecting and covering round and square hay bales
across the US since 1996. The company’s founder Earl Miller is responsible for many US patents but it’s his unique “Stake and Wind Lockdown” system that has put Missouri Hay Tarps on the map. Owners Jeff & Bobbi Limberg purchased the company in 2014. They are committed to continuing the business
under the principles of which it was built, offering a quality product at a reasonable price, backed by exceptional service.
In 2013 they improved the quality of an already popular and dependable product by increasing the weight to an even heavier tarp from 6.7 to 7.7 ounces. In addition to the increased weight they beefed up the rope reinforcement on the bottom edge of the tarp which helped to omit any tearing around the
grommets and lower edge of the tarp. They didn’t stop there, in addition to beefing up the tarp perhaps the most critical and noticeable improvement was the additional UV coating. The tarps are white in color on both sides and come treated with a special UV coating on both sides; both are critical components in combating the sun’s damaging UV Rays. With UV coating and white in color on both sides the tarps are fully reversible. Missouri Hay Tarps recommends reversing the tarp each hay season to prolong the life of the tarp. The UV coating and reversing of the tarp will combat the effects of the sun and Mother Nature’s elements which make a tarp weak and brittle the longer it is exposed. The improvements of 2013 were a success and Missouri Hay Tarps looks poised for the future. Tarps will be offered in 22 different sizes guaranteed to cover just about any hay configuration you can dream up. Order today and see for yourself what has made Missouri Hay Tarps the leader in engineered hay covering. Call 800-514-0258 or visit them online at www.MoHayTarps.com to place an order or learn more about these tarps. All major credit cards are accepted. e

Sunny D Mfg., Co. Inc – The Oregon Roadrunner
T
he Oregon Roadrunner, manufactured by Sunny D Manufacturing Company, Inc., is the all purpose machine when it comes to loading and unloading blocks of hay, everything from a stack of bales in the field to a six-pack of 3x4 bales. What used to take several people hours to buck the hay, whether loading trucks, unloading trucks, or moving the hay from one truck to another, now takes one person just minutes to accomplish. There is no other machine that can match it.
Humble Beginnings In 1971, Art Davina – then a rancher in Bonanza Oregon – saw the need, designed and built the first Oregon Roadrunner.
www.farmranchdairy.com
That machine is still being used today. While struggling through the hard times, redesigning to incorporate new ideas and improving on old ones, and building a strong customer base one customer at a time, Art managed to build his back-yard business to a point where he was able to open his first shop. By 1985 the business was large enough that he began the process of incorporating it. Later, needing more space to meet customer demand, he bought a larger property, and moved the business to its current location in Klamath Falls. When health problems forced Art to take a step back and de-stress his life, he wanted to find the perfect person to take the reins. Ed Majors took over as GM in 1998 and in 2003, began the process of buying the company from Art. Today, Ed officially owns it. Sunny D Today From those humble beginnings in 1971 to the 21st century, Sunny D Manufacturing Company Inc. has grown to a business totaling 15 employees. Welders, fabricators, mechanics, a painter, and various support personnel create from bare metal the machine that called “The Oregon Roadrunner.” What used to be only available in white with your choice of stripe, a customer can now choose their color and design. For more information, call 1-541-884-2361, or write 4343 Highway 39, Klamath Falls, OR 97603. e

temperature, enhancing germination. Areas with potential for heavy surface crusting that may interfere with germination, over-the-top applications of soil inoculants (beneficial soil bacteria) can help alleviate this potential problem. Additionally, a multiple hormone (auxin, cytokinin, gibberellins, seaweed/kelp) formula can yield dramatic results, especially during prolonged bad weather. Root systems are a plant’s lifeline and the use of plant hormones with starter fertilizers or foliar-applied can give a plant the best chance at success. The bigger and healthier the root system, the bigger and healthier the plant. It has been proven that the use of these products can: • Promote the growth of roots and shoots; • Improve early season vigor; • Enhance a crop’s ability to produce its own natural growth hormones; • Reduce early season stress with increased healing abilities; • Increase the overall health of the plant, and • Increase both yield and quality. Again, many consultants avoid using these, as they don’t well understand them and they must be fairly precisely applied. Phosphorous can be sprayed directly on the seed but caution is advised, as too much of any good thing can be harmful. Use products that are designed for foliar application and have low salt indices. Only one quart per acre of a high phosphorous formula next to the seed is needed to produce benefits. It is generally recommended that one to three gallons per acre of a high P formula be used that contains a balance of nutrients. This should be mixed with enough water to allow accurate application. Five gallons per acre total solution is minimum but a 10-gallon per row-acre rate would be much better for dilution as well as accuracy of application. Application equipment must also be functioning properly to deliver uniform rates of starter fertilizer when using in-furrow placement. Fertilizer injury often occurs from problems with application equipment on the planter. A common problem is getting rates too high due to improper settings or calibration, or unequal distribution on liquid systems (some rows receiving more than others) that can lead to over-application and fertilizer salt injury. Foliar applications while crops are under stress from excess soil moisture and cloudy conditions for extended periods are highly effective. Plants under prolonged anaerobic conditions will be stressed and have retarded development. Supplementing with a balanced phosphorous formula can boost plants while mitigating stress and enhancing development. Guidance from sap analysis at critical stages of plant development is used to formulate the proper foliar program and customize it to specific crop needs. This is essential to playing catch-up in times of duress. First feeding the soil and then the plants with a balanced diet at their critical stages of growth will accelerate maturity, lower production costs and increase yields and profits. e

combines. If your combine won’t feed at the auger, especially in short, weedy or tangled crops, it’s because it isn’t feeding at the cylinder. We solved the problem by designing a slat with a flap on it. Each slat on our Force Feed Feeder Chain works like a beater to feed material into the cylinder. Our Hillside Raddle holds grain while harvesting on a hillside. The Hillside Raddle has patented lugs attached to the steel slats. These lugs prevent grain from sliding to the downhill side of the raddle pan before it reaches the chaffer, thus preventing overloading of the lower side of the chaffer sieve and cleaning shoe. We can replace your wooden slat raddles with steel slat raddles on all Gleaners built before 1971. The Plastic Inserts convert the Force Feed Feeder Chain to an all-purpose chain to harvest all crops. They are ideal for grain stripping headers, handling only the grain and not the stalk and straw. They prevent wear on the feeder house floor, splitting, cracking, crushing of grain.
The Manchester Weed Wiper is the perfect solution for eliminating nuisance weeds from your crops. It works excellent on rye, weeds, Johnson grass, or any growth above your crop to be harvested. Available in self-propelled units or a front mount boom system. For more information, please call: 580-694-2292, or visit: www.manchestermfg.com e 22 • Western Farm, Ranch and Dairy

Neeralta Grain Bagging System
I
n 1984, Neeralta Manufacturing began its operations primarily in fabrication and repair in a strong agricultural community. Strong in engineering, design and fabrication, and with a clear vision of providing better solutions, Neeralta released its first grain bagging equipment in 2008. Setting higher goals and relentlessly incorporating and testing new and innovative features, Neeralta has continued to re-define the standards of high-performance grain bagging. Ease of use, low maintenance, and minimal downtime continue to define Neeralta’s approach to product development. The Neeralta Grain Bagging System offers the most robust construction and feature set, crafted from reliable parts that are specifically chosen to be readily available.
cially helpful if the field is a further distance from the yard. ADDITIONAL STORAGE FOR BUMPER CROPS In the event that the crop yields are high, the grain bagger can add storage space that isn’t available. Especially close to harvest when it may not be possible to buy more bins or have them arrive on time. DON’T CURRENTLY HAVE ENOUGH STORAGE CAPABILITY Instead of putting up additional grain bins, a grain bagger can be used to add infinite storage to the farming operation. CURRENT MARKET PRICE IS LOW Having the ability to add more storage easily will enable you to play the commodity markets. HARVEST HIGHER MOISTURE CROPS Grain bagging has the advantage of letting you harvest grain that is higher moisture than would normally be harvested This lets you get into the field earlier and stay out there longer. For more information, contact us at 866-497-5338 or visit www.neeralta.com . e
Neeralta is committed to promoting the responsible use and recycling of agricultural plastics. Fast & simple handling of the grain bag has been integrated into every aspect of the system. The Bagger makes loading quick and easy through its’ hydraulic loading process. With the Unloader, the patented Bag Baler eliminates plastic cleanup by winding the bag into a recycle-ready bale. When the bag is done, hydraulically drop the bale, and it’s ready to go. Recycling and bag handling couldn’t be easier or more reliable. RENTED LAND If rented land does not have storage space on it the grain bagger is a good option. It provides storage on site without needing to invest on permanent storage on land that belongs to someone else. NOT ENOUGH HELP ON THE FARM Having the ability to bag in the field reduces the required help since trucking the grain to the yard isn’t required. This is espewww.farmranchdairy.com

Birth of a Sprayer…the Family Expands
A
fter carefully listening to customers who were disappointed with the performance or lack of features in ATV sprayers available, C & R Supply set out to design a series, or family of sprayers to meet their needs. The family began with the EZ ATV Sprayer which features a unique tank design that was created with input from customers and ATV manufacturers. Using this input, and keeping the operator in mind the EZ ATV Sprayer was designed for ease of operation, functional ability and safety. The design was a success! This unit has been in demand since 1998 and continues to hold a strong presence in the market today. The EZ ATV Sprayer has a sleek design which brings the weight forward and more to a center of gravity for better machine balance. Allowing the legs of the tank to wrap around the fenders of the ATV gives the sprayers dual sumps maximum drainage and the ability to run on side hills without losing its prime. The pump,

strainer, and main shut off are mounted underneath the tank in a protected cavity, which also serves as a dual slosh baffle. The top of the tank is designed with a fill catch area to prevent chemical from getting on the operator. The EZ Sprayer is fitted with a 4 gpm Shurflo Pump and a quality Tee-Jet trigger style handgun in the convenient control panel at your side. All brackets and boomless nozzle or boom accessories are attached to the tank for quick and easy mounting. The EZ ATV Sprayer has several different options and accessories to meet your needs. As time went on customers began seeing a need in their operation for UTV’s. C & R Supply responded by expanding their family of sprayers. The UTV sprayer was born and it was named the C & R Slide In after its ability to be easily slid on and off the bed of the UTV as needed. The sprayer is mounted on a powder coated frame which allows the unit to be transferred as a single piece of equipment. This sprayer, like its elder sibling, was built with only the highest of quality components. The Slide In features a 60 gal tank, left and right electric controls with wiring harness, a Shurflo 4gm by pass pump, and Boominator nozzles which can spray a width of up to 30 feet. An 8 inch hand gun from Tee Jet with adjustable tip for hand spraying is also included. The Slide In sprayer has options and accessories available to meet the needs of your operation including a convenient retractable hose reel add on and additional boom options. Meet the all-new Bale Baron 5250!
B
uilding on the original design principles that Bale Baron owners appreciate, the new 5250 models feature many impressive upgrades designed to improve productivity and serviceability while still maintaining the outstanding reliability the Bale Baron brand is all so well known for. This year Marcrest Manufacturing Inc released 2 new models; the all-new 5250 and the refined 4250. Both of these units are available in the P (pick-up) and T (trail) models. The 5250 has a hydraulic requirement of 40 gallons per minute while the 4250 requires 30 gallons per minute. Let’s walk around the 5250 and see what fantastic upgrades have been made. At first glance you can immediately notice the wider front stance and wide flotation rear tires which keep the 5250 firmly planted. You will also see that the body work has been completely remodeled and looks fantastic! The ladder has been conveniently attached on a generous angle allowing for safer climbing to the knotter. Upon opening the knotter cover the relocated and re-engineered knotter miss-tie sensors cannot be missed; the new sensor location is a sure-fire way to detect actual knotter miss-ties. Another upgrade to the already extremely reliable low maintenance Rasspe knotter is the 4-lobe knotter sprocket which reduces the knotter cycle time by 25%! After the easy climb down the angled ladder you will notice the massive twine boxes, which swing out to allow full exposure to the compression chamber

and hydraulic lines for inspection and maintenance purposes. While walking around the 5250 one can easily notice that there are no grease nipples on all pivot points; this is achieved by using nitride treated pins paired with composite bushings. This design has been proven and adopted from the 6240 self-propelled Bale Baron. A serious feature that has not been mentioned is the ISOBUS compatible PLC. What does that mean? It means that if your tractor has ISOBUS the 5250 can be fully controlled and monitored right from the seat in your tractor! Ahh, no, my tractor doesn’t have ISOBUS?... No worries, there are ISOBUS screens available from Marcrest! And for those who aren’t into the latest and greatest technology, the 5250 can easily be operated by our ever-proven standard cab control box. Now let’s take a quick look at the 4250. It has maintained the same body work and stance as the 4240/4245. However, it shares some of the fantastic upgrades mentioned on the 5250 such as the greaseless pivot points thanks to the nitride treated pins and composite bushings. It also has the new 4 lobe knotter sprocket on the low maintenance Rasspe knotter for faster tie cycles. And like its big cousin the 4250 also has the new ISOBUS compatible PLC which means ISOBUS connectivity is ready and available for the 4250 when you are. nimal plasma provides a unique protein source which is often referred to as functional proteins. These functional proteins contain biologically active albumin and globulin proteins. Immunoglobulins such as IgG are important antibodies that circulate in plasma. Animal plasma is a highly soluble, high-quality protein source with an amino acid profile and nutritive value comparable to nonfat dried (skim) milk and casein. Animal plasma was introduced in commercial calf milk replacers more than 20 years ago. Today, about one third of all calf milk replacers made in the United States contain plasma. Large calf ranches where calves are co-mingled and often have not received adequate colostrum are the major users of animal plasma milk replacers. These operations recognize the advantage of plasma from a health perspective as well as a cost savings. In the digestive tract As well as being an excellent source of nutrition for young calves, animal plasma has additional beneficial effects in the digestive tract. During the first two weeks of life, the calf secretes a portion of the immunoglobulins it absorbed from colostrum back into its digestive tract. The more colostrum absorbed, the more immunoglobulins secreted. This recycling of immunoglobulins helps protect the calf against diseasecausing pathogens. Providing animal plasma in milk replacer increases immunoglobulin levels in the digestive tract and provides an ongoing source after the calf has stopped secreting immunoglobulins from its own bloodstream. Research with both young calves and baby pigs demonstrates that feeding animal plasma to young animals has a direct effect on the integrity and function of the small intestine. Animal plasma may directly affect antigen growth and attachment in the small intestine, affecting intestinal growth and improving its barrier function. Calf performance There have been at least 30 trials conducted to evaluate the effects of animal plasma on the growth and performance of baby calves. In these trials, plasma always performed as well as or better than all-milk protein milk replacers. Improvements include: • Fewer, shorter scour episodes • Reduced medical costs • Better gain • More starter intake • Lower cost than all-milk-protein milk replacers Animal plasma characteristics • 78% protein, 0.3% fat, 0.5% fiber, 7% moisture, 8.5% ash • Light tan color that does not change the color, aroma or solubility of the milk replacer For more information, contact Jessica at MC Sales, 630-957-7027. e

American Agra Curtains Inc. Keeping things in the family
K
eeping things in the family and carrying on a decades-old tradition is a big reason for the continued success of a Delphi, Indiana-based company that has been a favorite of livestock producers since the early 1980s. American Agra Curtains, a manufacturer of textile products for livestock barns, particularly insulated curtains for swine, dairy and poultry operations, was founded in 1983 by Bill and Carolyn Henderson. Bill Henderson said as a former builder of such facilities, he had a conversation with a hog farmer that sparked the idea for the company that today provides curtains for livestock producers world-wide.
received a patent for their insulated curtain, named MarCo-Lite, and through word of mouth, demand for the new product grew into the company that today provides curtains and other products to many of the world’s top producers. In December, 2018, Carolyn lost her battle with cancer, causing the family to regroup and develop a strategy for the future. Brian and Jerri Henderson, a son and daughter-in-law of the couple, were made the company’s new owners with Bill still overseeing some of the day-to-day operations. Jerri was named president and Brian managing owner. According to Jerri Henderson, the recipe developed by Carolyn when the company began in 1983 will continue to be the company’s
Brian and Jerri Henderson Bill and Carolyn Henderson
He said to me ‘I’d have one of those naturally-ventilated buildings if I could get an insulated curtain on it,’” remembers Henderson. “So, it really was the farmer who had the idea.” Bill said he went home and ran the idea past his wife, Carolyn, an accomplished seamstress. “She had some ideas on what kind of material to use because she was used to using material and we just put it together.” Not long after the couple’s first effort at making hog barn curtains was installed, the product was put to the ultimate test. “We had cold snap after we put it on his building and he was so happy because in his old building — the one that wasn’t insulated — every water line in the place busted and none of them busted in the new building.” The Hendersons 32 • Western Farm, Ranch and Dairy
roadmap for the future. “I worked here when Mom was here and when she got sick and couldn’t be here, I took care of her,” said the new company president. “She was really good at it. She was a leader. She was the oldest of 10 children and that being said, when you’re the oldest, a lot falls on you. I would say Mom ran this business very well and a big part of her success was her insistence on top quality, having a product that is 100 percent American made, and her relentless dedication to customer service.” The company is branching into other products such as recreational vehicle skirting, bird barriers for the poultry industry and room dividers for numerous industrial purposes. Rawhide Portable Corral to blend the Old with the New
J
ohn McDonald knows a thing or two about livestock equipment after working with cattle and rodeo livestock most of his life. Knowing there had to be a better portable corral design out there; he came up with it himself. In 2003 the public was introduced to his original Rawhide Portable Corral. It could be set up by one person without any lifting and it could be done quickly; yet it could also be pulled down the road at highway speeds, ensuring that no time would be wasted while catching cattle. Fast forward to 2018 and now customers have two different corrals to choose from; the Rawhide Original, throwback to the first design, or the Rawhide Processor. Even though the Processor’s design is viewed as the superior portable corral on the market, John believes that there are still those who will want a smaller, more affordable system. Enter the Rawhide Original, which is a blend between the two designs he has offered throughout the years and has a bumper hitch with permanent transport

wheels. The Original is only offered in the Standard and Large sizes. The Processor is offered in three sizes for the convenience of ranchers and cattle producers throughout the world and the main difference with this design is the ability to customize the corral upon ordering by including a hydraulic alley, head gate or loading chute. Whether you simply want to catch your cattle or process them on site and load them into a trailer from
the pasture, you are able to do so with the Processor. The design of the Processor continues to impress cattle producers with its versatility and ease of use. The permanent sheeted adjustable alley aids with working your livestock, whether it is done on site or in the field. The adjustable alley can be sized from thirty (30) inches down to sixteen (16) inches; either manually or hydraulically. The most notable features of the Rawhide corrals are that they are easy to set up and they are easy to transport. We mean it when we say that one person can open up the corral without lifting a panel. This will continue to be the model as we move forward with our newer designs. The key is one person can handle it all by themselves. Customers can manipulate the panels so it is not just one big pen, but two, three or even four pens for sorting, as one can never have enough pens when it comes to working cattle. John’s design was the first portable corral on the market to offer the hydraulic lift option. This has been so popular that we now offer customers the option to buy the Hydraulic Lift Kit with or without the battery so that they may upgrade existing equipment of their own. A lift kit includes the jack, power unit, solar panel and of course the option of including a battery at time of purchase. John and his wife Mary run the family business at their manufacturing plant in Abilene, Kansas, which is the only place where a Rawhide may be purchased outside of South Texas, where we now have a dealer in Hempstead. Making A Cowman’s Best Time Of The Year EVEN BETTER!
T
he favorite time of the year for cow-calf producers has long been established as being the calving season. That is when the anticipated results of the previous year’s breeding program decisions are realized. Jeff Creamer, Lazy JB Angus, a calf catcher owner, refers to his calving season as “Christmas Time.” Whether the new calves hitting the ground are from AI, ET or the valued herd sire battery, there is no time of the year that a cowman looks forward to more. Accompanying that ‘special time’ are dangers, extra stress and increased labor responsibilities that are often referred to as ‘a necessary part’ of the business. Over the years, many people have been injured, or worse, by the instinctive mother cow during the newborn processing period. Things can go wrong fast when tagging, vaccinating, banding and weighing new calves — and the results can be devastating. Bud Williamson of West Virginia says, “My calf catcher was a virtual life saver!’”
Safety Is a Priority “We are all about safety and making calf processing easier,” states Dan Leo, a long-time Nebraska rancher and owner of the Safety Zone Calf Catcher business. With the average age of cattlemen getting older, help being difficult, if not impossible to find, their calf catchers are filling a real need. Most cattle operations daily use ATV and UTVs, and now they have an important option to ensure that every calving season is safe and uneventful. Laurel Gilbertson, 74-year-old Nebraska rancher refers to his catcher as “The best piece of equipment I’ve owned.” Leo added, “The traditional way to tag and process calves can be dangerous and often takes more than one individual to 36 • Western Farm, Ranch and Dairy
accomplish. Now, just one person, who can operate an ATV or UTV, can safely work calves.” Allen Lippert, a Kentucky cattlemen, says his catcher is “Great for one-man operations. No more waiting for help!” Construction and Design The calf catcher is a durably constructed, welded steel cage that is built to last generations. Bill Helms, a Texas retired mechanical engineer and 71-year-old cattlemen applauds the design and fabrication quality adding “It is simple to use, and it works.” Mounting with ball-coupler hitches permits it to perform well in all types of terrains and conditions. The quick and easy mount and dismount process takes only a couple of minutes. Ease Of Operation With the front gate locked open, the driver approaches the calf and captures it in the cage by shutting the spring-loaded gate. Aiding the process, the catcher is designed for quiet operation, thus does not threaten the cowherd. Typically used on newborn to week-old youngsters, but calves up to 300 lbs. can be caught for treatment of pinkeye, foot rot and pneumonia conditions.
The producer enters the cage by stepping through the near side opening, and then moves the calf to the rear holding area where it can be easily processed while being protected from the mother cow. At all times, the operator is inside the cage, and never threatened by the instinctive mother. Daryl Bernard, an Iowa cattleman states, “I like how the calf holder restrains the calf and eliminates having to wrestle the calves on the ground.”
Rocky Mountain/Heartland
www.farmranchdairy.com
Mother Cow’s Behavior By design, nearly 100% of the mothers remain at the back of the catcher where the rear calf holder is located. The most protective of cows are much calmer when they can see and smell their calf in a less threatening situation, as compared to wrestling the calf away from the mother. “The unit works particularly well for pairing out as the cow will follow the calf virtually anywhere! Whether moving pairs to another pasture or during inclement weather, it is a valuable tool.” states Leo. When finished processing, the operator releases the calf out the back to its mother, again accomplished from inside the cage to maintain full-time safety. Montana rancher, Andy Dorn says this about his Safety Zone catcher, “It is the best investment we ever made. Easy on the calves and great for the cows too!” Making a Better Way “Traditionally, producers have to get to the calves early after birth otherwise it can be difficult to catch and even hang on to them, and then it can often require two or more people depending on the protective behavior of the mother cow while the processing takes place,” Leo notes. His goal is to make the best time of the year, safer, easier and with the labor requirement of only one person. Catcher user, Wanda Thompson from Missouri comments, “To all you out there still dodging mad momma cows, wrestling big calves, and maybe not getting some of your calves done, the calf catcher is definitely a better way.” Other options developed by Leo’s business include a digital,
waterproof scale — especially useful to seedstock producers – and a rear tow hitch to accommodate long-distance travel. Safety Zone Calf Catchers LLC, internationally trademarked and registered, sells directly to cattlemen and through a growing dealer network. Current sales extend throughout the continental U.S. and into Canada, Australia, France and the UK. Leo states, “Our best salesmen are the users as they cannot keep from telling their neighbors of the catcher’s benefits — and the word is traveling fast!”
