Editors’ Letter Dear Readers, ‘Ciao a tutti’ and a warm ‘benvenuti’ to our autumnal Italianthemed edition! Now the summer days are dwindling slowly and the more dreary weather inevitably begins to creep in, as it has that pesky habit of doing, we wanted to keep the holiday vibes flowing to get everyone looking forward to their next great escape. Sparking the city lovers’ imagination, we have ‘A Tale of Five Magical Italian Cities’, or for a relaxed villa break somewhere more remote then ‘La Dolce Vita villa style’ should have you dreaming of your next ‘vacanza’. For the motor enthusiast Joe Macari, supercar specialists, bring us a fabulous look into some of Italy’s undeniably superb automotive offerings. Not physically being in Italy doesn’t mean you can’t embody the Italian prima donna or the male equivalent, the ‘primo uomo’. We have fashion inspiration from some of the greatest Italian designers which will have you mentally enjoying the traditional Italian ‘passeggiata’ through the local piazza. Even if the reality of getting dressed in your finest for an evening stroll in England is slightly less appealing, if you do fancy a hint of Italy in London we have brought you ‘Little Italy London Style’ featuring some of London’s most authentic Italian restaurants and places to visit. Aside from our Italian extravaganza we had the exciting opportunity to interview the brilliant Nigel Havers and you can also expect our usual riverside focus on events, weddings, arts and much more to keep your spirits high as the leaves fall. We hope you have a great autumn and from Team Redbrook, ‘si prega di godere’ and ‘arrivederci!’ Team Redbrook Cover Images by: Jan Masny www.janmasny.com Director – Michele Brooks michele@redbrookmedia.com Editorial – editorial@redbrookmedia.com Editorial Team Jill Menghetti Anne Noakes Richard Lucas Anne Lee Nina Koo-Seen-Lin

Phase Eight

Valentino Founded by Valentio Garavani in 1959.

Armani Founded by Giorgio Armani in 1975

Founded by Gianni Versace in 1978

What’s the story?

What’s the story?

What’s the story?

What’s the story?

Knit work and zig zags will always be synonymous with Missoni, which has made them their trademark since Ottavio and Rosita founded the company in a small workshop in Gallarate, Italy. It was Ottavio who first had a gift for bold colour mixtures that have kept the label so recognisable. With that and the pair innovating the technique of cutting knit-like fabric, the designs will forever be celebrated in the fashion world. By the 1980s the business was firmly a family affair with their children Vittorio, Luca and Angela working in the company and so the family itself became central in the company values and inspired the spring 2010 ad campaign that featured them at home and having dinner together. Today Angela is at the helm as creative director, Luca is design director and Margherita, who is Angela’s daughter, is in charge of accessories and is also a model. Tragedy hit the family last year when a plane carrying CEO Vittorio crashed off the coast of Venezuela.

Known to the world simply as Valentino, the retired fashion designer is an icon in his own right and with a career spanning more than 50 years he rightly deserves the title The Last Emperor. He famously says in the film made about his life Valentino: The Last Emperor, “After me, the flood”. Valentino stands for classic beauty and romance and a glamour that stems from Hollywood silver screen sirens. He truly is the last connection the fashion world has to this beginning and has always said: “I know what women want, they just want to be beautiful”. Museum showcases, movies, lectures and documentaries have been created about the life and works of the legendary designer, who retired back in 2008. The creative reins were taken by Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaola Piccioli, who launched a collection for the younger market – Valentino Red – in 2003 and the brand’s first menswear collection in 2012.

He literally shot to fame. After five years of launching in Italy he opened stores in America and launched several lines. Now 30 years later his entrepreneurial talent sees him presiding over one of the biggest brands in the world. As talented in business as he is in fashion, Giorgio is known as the master of timeless elegance. His beginnings comes from a love of the human form and he started out doing two years in medical school before he did military service and found a passion for clothes while working at a department store dressing the windows.

Gianni Versace rocked the fashion world with his daringly sexy looks and today when we think of the brand, skin tight, bold colours and fearless dash come to mind. Gianni grew up surrounded by textiles spending much of his time in his mother’s sewing workshop where he worked for a short while before entering the world of fashion. His works were all about telling people’s stories and expressing freedom while his influences came from the classic Greek and Roman architectural remains, which were the landscape of his hometown Calabria. The great designer was tragically shot outside his Miami home in 1997 when he was 50 years old. His sister Donatella, who worked closely with him throughout his career, took over the design side of the company. She cemented her place in the industry when she designed the jungle green dress worn by Jennifer Lopez at the 2000 Grammy’s and was named Dress of the Year by The Fashion Museum in Bath. Donatella has never let the brand falter and continues to create looks for the Versace woman – powerful and seductive.

The big four from Italy

How the top Italian fashion designers got on top and stayed there.

Does your insurer value your most precious assets as much as you do?

This autumn we get you

Camera Ready Sassoon Salon is renowned for understated luxury and effortless sophistication with 11 salons in the UK and in iconic cities around the world.

Modern Elegance This season capture the mood of the moment with understated matt textures. “This short style needs minimal attention for a sleek and fabulous look”, says Gabin Ahmed, Assistant Creative Director at Sassoon Salon South Molton Street. To maximise a polished, glossy finish ensure you blow-dry the hair in a downward direction and wrap the hair around the head shape. This will create a sleek, highgloss shine with natural, effortless movement. Add a deep side-parting and loose movement to this look, instantly making it feminine and flattering, and a look that can be worn with confidence. PRO TIP: Use your hands to loosen the hair and create texture.

Crème de la Crème

Four out of five owners of valuable possessions arrange insurance policies that under insure their assets.

Subtle shades of beautiful colour are the essential choice for autumn. The key to mastering the palette? “Darker tones are carefully placed underneath the lighter to give a three-dimensional effect to the shape. This creates depth, whilst the lighter colours on top enhance the hair’s natural qualities of light reflection,” says Alliah Baterip, Senior Colour Director at Sassoon Salon South Molton Street.

At Quantum, we can help! Insurance is essentially a promise. But it’s a promise that’s only tested when you need to make a claim. Finding out that your most precious assets are inadequately insured when it’s too late can be tremendously stressful and financially damaging. Don’t fall in to the trap of trusting off the peg insurance to properly protect you.

There’s something very modern about wet-look hair: the silhouette, the highshine and the opulent finish. It’s androgynous -but it’s also powerful; a hair look that evokes attitude. For a quiff or swept away style to glam up your crop, add a small amount of Sassoon Professional, Texture Refine in the palm of your hand and rub together and distribute evenly throughout your hair – comb into place.

Quantum is the leading specialist insurance broker for the award winning, Chubb Masterpiece Policy in Europe. We provide a bespoke personal service with no call centres and we offer all prospective clients a complimentary review to custom fit their insurance exactly around their lifestyle and assets. Frequently, we see that under valuation is a result of the meteoric rise in the price of property, jewellery, watches, art, classic cars, couture clothing, wine and other collectables. Our personal review, ideally conducted in your home, will ensure that your most cherished assets are comprehensively protected. Our clients tell us that not having to worry about insurance allows them to truly focus on enjoying what they have.

Reassuringly relaxed, and yet still means business. “A cut such as the iconic modern ‘bob’ is the little black dress of the hairdressing world. A versatile look that is as current today as it was when it was reinvented by Vidal in swinging 60s,” says Gabin. This season the bob is sexier, tousled and textured – lines are made softer and more feminine. Looking undone is always on trend – “it’s an aspirational look that can be achieved on both long and short hair, For appointments call: but this simple look requires a great blow-dry,” says Gabin.

Being Happy C

lients often cite one of their objectives as ‘being happy’, but what is happiness? How do we know when we are in that state? And is being happy all of the time something to aspire to? In life, we need balance. The ability to relish the moment during special times of joy in our life is something to cherish, but if we were in this state all the time, would we be able to recognize and treasure those happy moments? Moments of joy and euphoria are by their nature transitionary. Life is a journey, and the way we deal with challenge and trials on our travels makes us the people we are; it shapes our character, and builds our resilience. Constantly chasing the pipe dream of eternal happiness is conversely a recipe for discontent. Those that do this are always looking for something more, and consequently find themselves in a place where they are unable to recognize and enjoy the good times. Being open to happiness is a skill and, for some, behaviour they have to learn. Is there a blueprint for happiness? I believe there are certain character traits that are happiness enablers. Working on incorporating these into your life will allow you to enjoy the good times while also giving you the capacity to cope with life’s dips and troughs.

• • • • • • •

Appreciate what you have. Be optimistic and forward looking. Develop your natural curiosity – the world is an exciting, fascinating and diverse place. Nurture your friendships and forgive your enemies. Bad things do happen but every day is a new day and a chance to make things better. Have life goals that you actively work towards. Being in balance means that you are in a good state in all aspects of your being: physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

Katja’s ethos is to make women feel confident with their shape and size. “Everyone is worthy of compliments and everyone is beautiful, you just need to unveil it!” Katja says and continues: “A great design is so much more than a drawing on the paper. It is all about how the design works with the personality of the wearer, how the right proportions perfect the look on her, how the specific shade of fabric makes her radiant and about every tiny detail, tuck and stitch in that piece which is lovingly made for her. We put this intricate puzzle together to make sure she looks stunning when it’s her moment to shine!” Oooh, have to book that appointment for my dream dress right now!

The hotel is the ideal base to explore London, it boasts stunning views overlooking Chelsea Harbour Marina and the River Thames, offering the very best accommodation for a luxurious stay. Chelsea Riverside Brasserie serves pre-meeting breakfast and morning coffee, to a lunch and formal evening meal. On our arrival we were greeted by the doorman. The foyer leading to the bar and restaurant gives an impression of sheer elegance and class. The restaurant terrace overlooks the marina and has impressive views. We had a lovely table in the Chelsea Riverside Brasserie looking out towards the marina, the setting was perfect. We began the evening with a glass of Taittinger Rosé Champagne, which was truly delightful. The waiter offered us fresh bread with pots of butter and olive oil which was a lovely appetizer. The menu has an extensive choice of international dishes. We chose Buffalo mozzarella and Scottish smoked salmon for starters, followed by Veal Sirloin on the bone with Dauphinoise potatoes and wild mushroom sauce, and Lamb Cannon and belly with Chantenay carrots, pea purée, truffle potato, rosemary jus. This was followed by a superb Lemon Tart, with grape ice cream and burnt meringue, and Chocolate Fondant with pear sorbet – complemented by a lovely Chardonnay. The meal was delicious and the presentation of the food was excellent. The wine and spirit selections were superb in every way. There is a lovely ambience in the restaurant, giving a feeling of true contentment and relaxation. Attention to detail was impeccable with stylish cutlery, glasses and furnishings. Ynyshir Hall’s succulent seafood comes from Cardigan Bay — with lobsters, crabs and shrimp landed at Aberystwyth and Borth. And there is exceptional wild salmon and sewin in the local rivers. Venison and wild game are in abundance, Ynyshir Hall has tender-sweet Welsh lamb along with free-range chicken and Welsh Wagyu beef which is second to none. Pork is organic and bacon is handcut for breakfast with sausages prepared to the hotel’s own recipe. The kitchen garden produces wonderful fruit, vegetables, herbs and salads. Gareth collects wild foods such as mushrooms, samphire, wood sorrel and wild garlic from the surrounding countryside— all absolutely delicious thanks to the purity of the local soil, water and air.
