Earth Day 2015; “It’s Our Turn to Lead” Liberty State Park Celebration to Raise Eco Awareness
I
By Sally Deering
t’s been 25 years since Hudson celebrated the first Earth Day in Liberty State Park and on Sat, April 25 – rain or shine – the Hudson County Improvement Authority (HCIA), Friends of Liberty State Park, and local and state community activists will be at the waterfront park to enlighten local residents on ecological issues in Hudson and the world-at-large. Earth Day 2015 will kick off at 10 am with a 5k Walk and Run through the park; and for the kids there’ll be kite flying, arts and crafts, inflatable rides, interactive games, contests and giveaways, with a steady flow of entertainers on the main stage; and refreshments, too. Hundreds of volunteers from city and state community groups and organizations will present displays on local and world-wide ecological innovations and reforms to inform visitors about the eco future. cont’d pg. 4

The Art of Fitness Fitness Specialist & Nutritionist Melissa Morin-Stewart Raises the Barre Former Ballet Dancer fuses Barre, Yoga & Pilates at New Union City Fitness Studio
By Sally Deering After blowing out her knee in freshman year of college, ballet dancer Melissa Morin-Stewart turned pirouettes into Pilates. Owner and founder of Clarity Fitness in Union City, Morin offers her years of athletic prowess in ballet, her Bachelor of Science and Master’s degrees in fitness and nutrition; and her expertise designing fitness programs for corporate America, to her new role as owner of Clarity Fitness, Morin-Stewart’s new health & wellness studio in Union City. Offering choices beyond the gym, and just a few blocks north of the Lincoln Tunnel, Morin’s-Stewart’s Clarity Fitness is a storefront studio on a somewhat gloomy strip of Park Avenue. But that shouldn’t
deter visitors from venturing in to take a class. Once inside the open space, visitors will find refuge from the wear and tear of city life, a calm and Zen-like atmosphere to stretch, sweat and get in touch with your inner self and outer flab. Morin-Stewart brings a trifecta of experience and knowhow to her studio and each of her classes – Fusion, Barre, HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) and Zumba® offer a total body workout. And she knows her stuff. Morin holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition from Rutgers University and a Master’s in Exercise Physiology from the University of Rhode Island. After 15 years managing and teaching fitness programs in New York City, MorinStewart decided to bring
(Melissa Morin-Stewart, Owner of Clarity Fitness in Union City)
her expertise to Union City where she resides with her husband Teno who helps her run the studio. Morin-Stewart’s Fusion class is the studio’s signature workout, a mix of yoga and Pilates with strength and flexibility movements. Barre class incorporates core training with traditional Barre choreography to help people achieve a long, lean, sculpted look. HIIT uses “minimal equipment to maximize the use of body weight and functional movements,” and Zumba® blends exercise with dance. Morin -Stewart offers solo classes at $15 a pop; and for $99 a month, you go as often as you like. Cont’d on page 8

what resources are available in the county to help protect our environment, together.”
Cont’d from cover
“This year marks our 25th anniversary of Earth Day Celebrations here in Hudson County and since its inception, the goal has always been to raise environmental awareness among members of the community,” says MaryEllen Gilpin, Director of HCIA’s environmental programs. “The fair creates an opportunity for residents, young and old, to enjoy themselves while learning the importance of ‘reducing, re-using and recycling’ and protecting our urban environment.” The Hudson County Improvement Authority (HCIA), founded in 1974,
provides strategic planning and coordination of public policy initiatives on behalf
of Hudson County municipalities and residents. The authority is responsible for a vast range of services including low interest financing for public and private initiatives, solid waste management, environmental education, recycling and transportation management, recreation services, and alternative energy initiatives. From the 5K run/walk, to the informative displays and tents, and green communities’ marketplace,
Hudson residents will have a wide array of things to do and see at the fair, Gilpin says. “View the winning posters drawn by students for our 9th annual Earth Day Calendar art contest, or make a pledge to help the environment at the ‘Wishing Tree’,” Gilpin says. “This year will be the largest Earth Day Fair we have ever run. It is more important than ever to make sure our communities understand
The national Earth Day theme this year is “It’s Our Turn to Lead” focusing on the unique environmental challenges facing our world, and especially our urban municipalities. All attendees at LSP are invited to visit the Wishing Trees to make a pledge to perform one act that can lead the way to make our Hudson municipalities “greener”. “On behalf of myself and my fellow commissioners, I would like to invite you to join us in Liberty State Park for a celebration of 25 Years of Earth Day in Hudson County,” HCIA Chairman John L. Shinnick says. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to bring residents together to learn about the environment and spend time with their Cont’d on page 7

Cont’d from page 4 community. It’s a great day of free outdoor fun for the whole family.” EXHIBITORS Exhibitors at Earth Day 2015 will include city and state government agencies, community groups, service organizations, health care service providers, ‘green’ retailers and non-profits with ecological missions like Hudson River Waterfront Conservancy, Citizens Climate Lobby, Student Conservation Association, NJ Dept. of Environmental Protection, and the NY/ NJ Baykeeper. The NY/NJ Baykeeper in Keyport offers eco cruises and kayak tours that launch from Keyport. Representatives from the NY/NJ Baykeeper will be at LSP to raise awareness to the needs within NY-NJ Harbor. “Many residents throughout New Jersey don’t know how to access their waterways to use them for recreational purposes and learn more about their environment,” Sandra Meola of the NY/ NJ Baykeeper says. “Baykeeper’s interactive kayak tours and eco cruises aim to connect the public to their waterways. By doing so, we advocate for the protection and preservation of our waterways within the NYNJ Harbor Estuary.” WALK FOR FRIENDS OF LSP; RUN FOR HC IMPROVEMENT
Friends of Liberty State Park is an all-volunteer, non-profit, 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to preserving, protecting, conserving and promoting Liberty State Park. Since 1988, it has advocated for the protection and improvement of this open space park, and more than 5 million visitors come annually to enjoy this recreational, natural, historic, and cultural public resource. It all began when local residents Morris Pesin and Audrey Zapp, and historic preservationist Ted Conrad led a citizens’ movement to transform a waterfront wasteland of abandoned rail yards and decaying piers into a park. Sam Pesin, the son of Morris Pesin continues his father’s advocacy as director of the Friends of Liberty State Park. “Earth Day is a time for us all to celebrate Mother Nature and think about doing all we can to contribute to a clean and healthy environment,” Pesin says.
“We must all be activists in protecting the beauty, necessity and spiritual power of nature and open space. Liberty State Park is our great urban waterfront open space which enriches our urban quality of life.” At 11 am, following “Walk for LSP” and the HCIA’s 5K Walk/Run, a “Kids’ Kingdom” area will open with environmentthemed displays, information on services available throughout Hudson, and tree seedlings, compliments of the NJ Division of Parks and Forestry. Throughout the day, strolling entertainers like a juggling stilt-walker, “Earth Boy”, “Buster”, “Woodsy” and “Garbage Goat” will interact with festival-goers, and. was my extra-curricular. I danced from 3 till I graduated from high school. When I went to Rutgers, I tried out for the dance team. During the audition I hurt my knee badly -- I couldn’t walk and was on crutches. Once I recovered and was able to function, I realized dancing wasn’t going to be my career. For rehab, I had to go to the gym. I walked in and didn’t know what I was doing, but I kept going, I asked people at the gym what exercises I should do. It became a weekly routine. It was through that I started to feel better, keep off a little weight. That’s how I got into health and wellness and declared my major in nutrition. RVO: Why did you choose to teach this group of classes at Clarity? MMS: I have been managing group exercise programs in Manhattan and as the years evolve new classes are introduced in the industry, People in New York City love Barre classes. There’s no question about it. Strengthening, yoga, body training and Pilates are popular, too. For the Fusion class, I wanted to fuse all that together, so that people sweat, get a bit of yoga, mind and body
strengthening and have an experience. RVO: In your opinion, why is it important to exercise? MMS: The stronger you are the better you are protecting your organs, decreasing your risks for injury, and decreasing your stress. We live in the most stressful area in the world. Exercise does decrease stress and increase serotonin and make us happier. The more we can participate in activities like this, we‘re better setting ourselves up for the future. RVO: How do you choose your staff at your studio?
MMS: I teach most of the classes. The reason is I’m a small business owner. I do have two Zumba instructors, and I let them take the wheel for Zumba. I have another Barre instructor who lives in Hoboken. That was one of the things that was important to me, to use local instructors. RVO: Why did you choose Union City and not some trendy town to open Clarity Fitness? MMS: I wanted to keep it local and get away from the drama from New York City fitness studios. It’s very competitive in New York, and it can be over-sexualized. In New York City it’s
all about what you look like, how many clients you can draw. That’s what I love about this neighborhood and the space. Nobody’s competing and everybody just wants to feel good and have fun. One of the things I wanted to create is not just, a place to work out, but a place to have an experience. RVO: What is your fitness/health philosophy? MMS: It’s not all about how you look, it’s about how you feel. That’s the great thing about the studio. We attract a clientele who are trying something new. We have all shapes and sizes, male and female, and everybody starts at the same place and now they’re getting more fit and feeling better about themselves. Smoothies to Live For Fruteria Juice Bar blends Healthy Drinks with Good Vibes By Sally Deering
T
he blender whirs full blast as Sheldon Hall, owner of Fruteria Juice Bar pops mango, pineapple and papaya chunks into a plastic pitcher for one of his signature smoothies, the Caribbean Queen. Throughout the day, customers stop by the tiny juice bar on Park Avenue in Union City with its green and yellow walls adorned with mermaids juggling fruit, and other eclectic artworks, for one of Hall’s delicious – and healthy – smoothies, veggie and specialty drinks. Hall, 38, opened Fruteria Juice Bar last December and since then, the entrepreneur has been building a close relationship with the local community and a growing fan base, one smoothie at a time. “Providing people an alternative to what’s out there is rewarding,” Hall says while on a short break from an endless stream of customers. “A lot of people have curiosities about juicing. I make it accessible.” Watching Hall create his smoothies is like watching a master mixologist. Fresh fruits and vegetables are tossed into juicers and blenders with options like almond juice, apple juice, passion fruit, pineapple juice and yogurt. Then Hall adds ingredients like fresh veggies, fruits and nuts, and proteins like Irish moss. He pours the concoctions right up to the brim of the 16-
ounce cups he serves them in without spilling a drop.
ENERGIZER BUNNY Smoothie with a shot of Wheatgrass “He knows what he’s doing,” Juan Pablo Aguirre, a first-time customer says, after a sip of Hall’s Caribbean Queen smoothie with a dash of spinach. “I’ll be back for sure.” No drink is too complicated for Hall who cultivated a taste for smoothies growing up in The Bronx and drinking them with his dad at the Green Garden health food store. His family is originally from Trinidad and settled in The Bronx before Hall was born. “I would always go back to the Green Garden,” Hall says. “I would bring high school friends, college friends. If I saw a juice bar, no matter where I was, I’d check it out.” Hall holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing from Norfolk State University in Virginia; and a Master’s degree in
