Art House Productions Black Tom Radio Play Cont’d and Jenna Krasowski. Black Tom Island was originally commissioned and produced by Premiere Stages at Kean University in Union, NJ. The original production was presented at the Liberty Hall Museum, which received the 2018 Broadway World New Jersey Audience Award for Best New Play Produced. “I grew up listening to old radio dramas, which our local Public Radio
station (KCRW in Los Angeles) played on weekday afternoons. Shows like THE SHADOW and PAUL TEMPLE, where only the voices and sound effects told the story,” says playwright Martin Casella. “When Art House suggested doing a radio version of Black Tom Island, I jumped at the chance! What our brilliant actors, director, and sound designer have come up with is
absolutely thrilling.” “We hope this radio play will give our patrons a new way to experience the play and learn about this often overlooked important local historical event,” says Producing Director Courtney Little. “This is the first radio play Art House produced and it’s proven to be a rewarding challenge. We’ve translated theater’s spirit of collaboration, discovery, and creativity into this new format.”

Jersey Art Exchange (JAX) has merged with Art House Productions effective January 2021 to help improve and expand arts education and opportunities for the Jersey City community. The move is a welcome one to both groups and will allow them to better structure resources and to support each other in a more meaningful way. Founded in 2014 and 2001 respectively, JAX and Art House Productions have a combined 25 years of serving the community with access to high-quality arts education experiences. JAX Founder Jacqueline Arias will remain Director of the program at Art House. JAX, a mostly volunteer organization, has been successfully serving youth and artists in Jersey City by educating the next generation of artists, technologists and digitally-literate citizens. The JAX programs provided safe and enriching learning environments in which young people work with older teens and adult mentors to explore ideas and develop skills in the areas of digital arts, photography, music, computer literacy, STEAM, and more. JAX also fosters mentorships between youth and established artists in the community while providing adult artists opportunities to showcase their own work through art exhibitions and music performances, in and around Jersey City. Art House’s tentpole educational programs include SAY WORD?! and STAGES!. SAY WORD?! introduces students and adults to public speaking, and gives them the tools to feel comfortable speaking in front of an audience and the ability to create original speaking content. Founded in 2011, STAGES! is committed to fostering impactful and
long-lasting relationships with students, offering unique programming for every stage of their artistic life. The program provides a unique opportunity for young performers to train with professionals in all aspects of Theater and Musical Theater through our Stages! Conservatory, Stages! Fellowships, and MainStages! Musical. “I’m thrilled that Art House has committed to advancing the mission of my labor of love that was founded for the youth and artists of this community of whom I hold dear,” says JAX Founder Jacqueline Arias. “JAX has thrived through the creative energy of the youth and the hearts and souls of our volunteers. It is heartening that we will be in the capable hands of an established pillar of the Jersey City arts community, one that truly understands how to grow a grassroots program. Together, we will bring back successful JAX programs such as our teen summer program and continue to foster our teaching artists.” “Art House is committed to education in many different art forms, for all ages, and we’re thrilled to be merging with JAX.” says Art House Executive Director Meredith Burns. “We’re looking forward to continuing their innovative programming for the Jersey City community and hope to be instrumental in expanding the offerings to all of Hudson County.”

Laura Jensen Walker’s Hope, Faith & a Corpse begins a promising new series. Hope Taylor has moved to the quaint town of Apple Springs in Northern California to start over. The young widow is the first female pastor of Faith Chapel Episcopal Church, which not all parishioners are comfortable with. MATEO ASKARIPOUR
SATIRICAL FICTION
$26.99
In his debut novel, Mateo Askaripour offers a witty yet thrilling examination of the complexities of race in corporate America. The novel centers on Darren Vender, a 22-year-old Black man who shares a Brooklyn brownstone with his mother and works as a shift leader at Starbucks. Despite graduating at the top of his high school class, Darren did not go to college and seems to lack ambition. That changes after a chance encounter with Rhett, the CEO of a buzzy tech startup called Sumwun, who invites Darren into the ruthless world of corporate sales.

LIZ TICHENOR NONFICTION/ MEMOIR/ SPIRITUALITY
$26.00 Liz Tichenor’s The Night Lake: A Young Priest Maps the Topography of Grief surprised me. I felt surprise at the grace with which Tichenor shares her walk through shadow. I was surprised by how deeply Tichenor’s articulation of her experience of faith resonated with my own, and by her brushes with the
mystical divine that jolted me and left me feeling uncertain. Some might feel surprise at priests cursing in the face of unimaginable grief. Whatever your experience of grief, and whatever your experience of faith, The Night Lake will manage to surprise you, too. But it’s not easy reading.
ACE ATKINS MYSTERY & SUSPENSE / SUSPENSE $27.00 A missing laptop, a
treasure map and two bizarre murders await in this month’s Whodunit column. Bryant & May: Oranges and Lemons Author Christopher Fowler’s Peculiar Crimes Unit investigates exactly what you’d expect: cases that are far from your everyday, humdrum homicide. But as Bryant & May: Oranges and Lemons—the latest entry in the popular series—opens, it appears that the unit will close up shop, having fallen victim to budgetary cuts and some remarkably public blunders.
