Pandemics Not New to Native Americans “We got this:” say Artists Promoting Theatre By Richard Dwyer
New York City has the largest number of Native Americans of any location within the United States and the mission of the American Indian Community House (AICH), https:// aich.org/, which is represented by 72 tribes, is to serve the needs of this population; however, the pandemic unexpectedly gives everyone the opportunity to learn about the original caretakers of the land. Theatre is utilized by the AICH to increase the visibility of American Indian cultures and to foster awareness, understanding and respect. “One of these initiatives is Native Theatre Thursdays and the next performances are 8:00 -9:30 PM on July 9th, July 23rd and August 6th,” said Ty DeFoe, a facilitator of the series. “Visit the Native Theatre Thursdays FaceBook page for more information. “We are living in challenging times, and my hope is that we can unite the land and the people through art, dance and culture to help us all heal together. I invite everyone to join us on this spiritual journey.” Due to COVID-19, the live audience performances had to be cancelled; and, Ryan Pierce said, “This public health challenge galvanized the arts community and enabled us to support
each other artistically and reach a broader audience who can experience Native American productions using Zoom and FaceBook.” Ty laughed with the recognition that, “Recently, when we promoted a show at the Community House, everyone knew it was Eastern Time, now we have to note Eastern, Mountain or Pacific time.” Ryan Pierce added, “There are a lot of things that were not told to non-native people and these productions allow audiences to learn about the Native American cultures. We can foster an inter-cultural understanding and learn about each other – especially the truth. For instance, many of the ideals that formed this country come from Native Americans, including democracy.” Jersey City resident Kim “Morning Star” Snyder, has been a member since the 1980s and said, “There are not many spaces to work and talk about native peoples’ issues through acting, writing and producing. The Community House is a sanctuary where we can connect, create, empower and find resources to bring people together.”
