id you know New Jersey ranks No. 1 in the U.S. in wine consumption and No. 6 in wine production? Did you know wines from Garden State wineries were ranked higher than the best of France and California in blind wine-tastings? Did you know, if you’re a Jersey resident or live close by, the Garden State has 36 wineries just a car ride away, some with fine restaurants, hotel accommodations, spas, horseback-riding, even Opera Galas with singers from the Metropolitan Opera in New York? One winery event hosts a Lucille Ball lookalike in a grape stomping contest. If you’re a wine connoisseur, wine-lover or just looking for something new and interesting for a weekend getaway or family day trip, Bart Jackson’s “Garden State Wineries Guide,” (Published by Wine Appreciation Guild of San Francisco; 120 pgs.; $14.95;) is the perfect roadside companion. The guide features profiles of 36 wineries, wine tasting specifics, the owners’ most prized wines; driving directions; detailed maps of area wine regions; a calendar of wine-related events; the New Jersey Wine Grape Glossary; and a directory of Garden State wine associations, shops and educational resources. An historical retrospective of New Jersey wine by Gary Pavlis, Ph.D., of Rutgers University is also included along with an instructional guide on the proper method for wine-tasting by wine judge Anthony Fisher.
Bart Jackson
Jackson, a world-traveler and Cranbury, New Jersey resident is a wine advocate with his own backyard “hobby vineyard.” An expert on wine (he’s been to 70 countries and tasted the wine,) Jackson decided to write a book on New Jersey wineries after attending a blind taste-testing where New Jersey wines ranked higher than California and France. con’t pg. 2

on the cover . “That’s one of the things that make New Jersey stand out,” Jackson says. “In more than one blind taste testing I’ve been to, they covered the bottle and when the bottles were scored, New Jersey scored above California and France. I realized people were totally unaware New Jersey was producing world class wines. A lot of wine stores didn’t want to carry Jersey wines. I thought if we can’t bring the wine to the people, let’s bring the people to the wineries. We’re the number six producer of wine in America and New Jersey people drink more wine than any other state.” New Jersey’s great wine comes from great soil and about 70 percent of New Jersey’s wineries are located in southern New Jersey’s

outer coastal plains, Jackson says, where the sandy soil keeps the grapevines welldrained. “It is the Garden State, after all,” Jackson says, “and there’s a long tradition of grape growing in New Jersey. There was a huge wine industry before the American Revolution. After that, many of the Italian immigrants brought their vines with them and started grapes here. A lot of them began with grand-dad making wine and selling it out the back door. My wife and I have a hobby vineyard. We make a hundred bottles ourselves for our friends.” It wouldn’t be a New Jersey winery if it didn’t have some type of niche, a certain panache that makes it unique and many offer something
special with their wine tastings. On Sat and Sun, Aug 28 and 29, the Renault Winery Resort (72 N. Bremen Ave., Egg Harbor City, 609-9652011, www.renaultwinery. com,) hosts a Grape Stomping Festival where visitors can make their own wine using their feet. The special guest is a Lucille Ball impersonator who will be stomping grapes just like the real Lucy did on TV. Tomasello Winery (225 White Horse Pike, Hammonton, 800-666-Wine, www.tomasellowinery.com) which produces fine table and sparkling wines, hosts Wine & Cheese Parties and Wine Education Seminars. four-course meal. (The next Opera Galas are scheduled for October.) Villa Milagro Vineyards (33 Warren Glen Road, Finesville, 908-995-2072, www.villamilagrovineyards. com,) is the state’s only organic vineyard and has a gorgeous view of the Delaware River, Jackson says: “It’s run by Audrey and Steve Gambino and they do a great job with organic wines.” Four JG’s Orchards & Vineyards (127 Hillsdale Road, Colts Neck, (732) 946-9777, www.4jgswinery.com,) is located on a farm with barns and houses that date back to the early 1700s. The winery won a gold medal its first year of operation for its Chambourcin Reserve. And the Laurita Winery (35 Archertown Rd, New Egypt, 609-758-8000, www.lauritawinery.com,) has an Inn on the property that’s a restored farmhouse with beautiful guest rooms and spa services. Guests can take horseback riding lessons or go for trail rides at the Laurita Equestrian Center. “Jersey wineries are small on a national scale,” Jackson says. “They’re intimate. Most are run by families because a family can make a good living as a winery owner. It’s a nice family industry and that’s what you have in New Jersey. Some are multi-generation farms and have turned to wine making to save the farms because wine grapes pull in more money per acre. Wine just does better. It’s easier to harvest grapes and most of the work is done by hand. The person who pours you your wine at a tasting will have hard calloused hands from working the winery.”

Trump Plaza Residences Jersey City Celebrates Milestone Year with Donald Trump, Jr.
Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy Joins More Than 300 People at July 21st Poolside Celebration JERSEY CITY, N.J. (July 26, 2011) – In recognition of a momentous year for Trump Plaza Residences Jersey City – the New Jersey Gold Coast’s most luxurious condominium tower – a poolside celebration was held Thursday at the building, where an enthusiastic crowd gathered to celebrate summer and hear remarks by Donald Trump, Jr., Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy and Barclay Jones. The invitation-only event was attended by local dignitaries, residents and those involved with the development, and marked the sale of more than 340 – over 75 percent – of the building’s residences. “Trump Plaza Residences exemplifies the enviable lifestyle consistent with the Trump brand,” stated Donald Trump, Jr. “You can easily see the luxury and attention to detail that defines this property.” In early 2010, a new marketing program was launched, with improvements to the property, including entrance and lobby enPhoto by Steveamack.com hancements and a redesign of the outdoor space in order to maxiPictured above Barclay Jones, Jersey City Mayor; Jerramiah T. Celebrity interior designer Benjamin Noriega-Ortiz of Manhattan-based BNOdesign collaborated with Trump and the owner to redecorate the entrance and the public spaces – including the heated outdoor pool – giving these spaces the relaxed-yetluxurious feeling of a hip urban mansion with a home-as-your-castle theme. “We’re extremely pleased to be celebrating some of the significant achievements we’ve had over the past year at Trump Plaza Residences Jersey City, including phenomenal sales and new retail tenants,” stated Jodi Stasse, director of sales and marketing for Trump Plaza Residences. “We’re pleased that the property has become a part of the fabric of Jersey City.” Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy officially welcomed the building’s homeowners to the city, vowing to continue to work on ways to enrich Jersey City for its residents. “As Jersey City’s tallest residential building, Trump Plaza Residences very prominently complements our city’s continuously growing skyline,” stated Cont’d on page 26

Japanese motorcycle industry dominance over? Steve Klose-Saddlebums.tublr.com
Motorcyling the Lower Hudson Valley and Beyond
The times they are a changin.’ Particularly for the Japanese motorcycle big four. Are we seeing the beginning of the end of their rule? Or at least, as Churchill croaked the end of the beginning? The kids are not alright Yes, Honda/Kawasaki/Suzuki/Yamaha owns the middleweight sport bike market. Nobody even dares to compete with them on that turf (OK, the Triumph Daytona 675 is prowling the neighborhood). But fortunes have changed there. The market is vanishing. Seems the economy has hit the Echo Boomers and the Internet Generation harder than most. The Big Four (TB4) now must share a shrinking pie (one of them has reported that sales of 600cc sport bikes were down 90 percent from 2006 to 2010 — Cycle World, July). The segment is so dismal that BMW has scratched their own middleweight. Speaking of the Germans…BMW über alles The July issue of Motorcyclist paints a rosy picture for Bayerische Motoren Werke. To say the S1000RR is a success would be an understatement. According to the article (Up to Speed: On Das Gas) nearly 25 percent of global sport bike sales belong to the Munich manufacturer. That’s right, almost one in four sport bikes being sold bears the blue and white rondel. Who would have thought this two years ago? And it looks like the new K1600GT will ruffle more than a few Gold Wing feathers when it arrives in showrooms. (And certainly more when it leaves those showrooms). And don’t forget the Italians. The mags are creaming over the new Aprilia Tourno V4 R. If it can produce and sell it in numbers things could get crowded in the 1000cc naked sport bike field, already being assaulted by the Triumph Speed Triple and Ducati Monster. (Do I hear the roar of a Diavel?). It’s been a long rule Seems like only yesterday that TB4 delivered a Seal Team Six double tap to the kings of the day with the brilliant CB750 and ferocious Z1. Some would even argue that the first salvo was fired by the 500cc two-strokes. But the Rising Sun power grab started over 40 years ago. That’s a lotta arse time on the throne. Time will tell if we’re witnessing another revolution or if TB4 is just catching its breath. After all, BMW is only one manufacturer. OK, Triumph has emerged from the trenches waving the Union Jack. And Aprilia and Ducati are serving up some tasty dishes. Hey — one, two, three…that’s four. And I didn’t even mention the Chinese assault on the rear guard. Adios for now, Steve Klose Any Northern Jersey motorcycle news send to turbosteve84@

Master Anthony Bez, veterans of ASC main stage productions. “Camp Arden” promises a great deal of fun and excitement for Shakespeare students. The performance at the workshop’s end will be in Elizabethan costume, using ASC’s award-winning collection. (ARA) - When a room starts to look dated, it’s time to redecorate! Adding blue and white colors and patterns to a living room, bath or bedroom can make a striking statement, and give these rooms a fresh, yet timeless look. From deep navy to soft indigo, blue is a low-maintenance color. Pairing it with white provides a workable and classic palette. “Blue and white are approachable colors that work well in any part of the home,” says Sabrina Soto, Target style expert for home and HGTV designer. “Together they look elegant, and when paired with pops of color, like yellow and orange, they can be warm and welcoming.”
Soto recommends looking for decor with fine detailing that adds texture and dimension to a sofa or bed. Decorative pillows with embroidered characteristics, such as the paisley hand-knotted toss pillow from the Target Home collection can tie a room together nicely, for just $19.99. The combination of paisley,
floral patterns and stripes in blue and white tones allow the contrasting designs to complement one another. In the bedroom, handsome blue tones can make a strong statement without being too masculine. “The key is to soften the blue with a quieter color like khaki or white,” says Soto. “Look for bedding that balances the richness of a blue hue with a few delicate details to keep it chic.” Try a reversible quilt, such as the paisley patchwork quilt from the Target Home collection. Decorating with blue and white can be serene,” says Soto. For more home decorating ideas, visit Target.com.

ARIES (March 21 - April 19) Work projects that have been challenging for months will come to a satisfying conclusion in the month of August. Issues of communication or travel are highlighted by 3rd house energies. You may even make a deal on that new car has been pleasantly haunting you in your dreams. Caution, please double check all contracts as Mercury is retrograde during most of August. TAURUS (April 20 - May 20) Truthfully, you have been going through some bad times recently. Now you can feel that things are getting better. Go forth with confidence that your situation is improving with each day. Continue to follow your dreams and with Jupiter in your sign you will not fail to achieve them.
GEMINI (May 21 - June 20) Mars the 7th house may find you itching for an argument with partners. You must have learned that any angry discussions over mundane matters do not help but only contribute to bad feelings all around. Use caution in all your dealing and think before you speak in the month of August. CANCER (June 21 - July 22) You have been holding in your emotions and they are ready to overflow. Not unlike an erupting volcano you are ready to blow. Direct your energy towards your goals and not inward with fear and your month will be a successful one. © STARGAZINE 2011 All rights reserved. LEO (July 23 - Aug. 22) The magical 8th house is calling you to explore your psychic powers. The Sun and Venus assure you that your experiences will be positive and fulfilling. If you are not interested in the spiritual part of life than this is an excellent time to apply for a mortgage or loan as the 8th house also deals with other people’s money. VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sept.22) Is there anybody out there paying attention to what’s going on in the world? As a Virgo, many times you feel alone as you think about problems and search for solutions. You can’t take all the responsibilities on your shoulders. The astral advice suggests that you take care of your little corner of the Universe and make it positive and happy. LIBRA (Sept. 22 - Oct. 22) The Universe is attempting to help you achieve your goals, all be it slowly due to the influence of Saturn. Little things that mean so much have turned in your favor. Things like not getting a ticket at an expired meter to receiving a check back as repayment from a friend you loaned money. The wheel of fortune has turned in your favor once again, so enjoy the positive vibes. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 - Nov. 21) We are all on the moving sidewalk going towards infinity and we worry and fuss if our reality show is cancelled. Of all the signs Scorpio has really got the sense of miracles and the unknown. This month events of a magical nature , serendipitous, and awesome, prove that there is something more to life and Scorpio is closer than all others to deciphering there meaning.
Month of August 2011 by J. Banta Lewis
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21) The need for significance and personal power are what the month of August is about. Sagittarius rising in the heavens indicates a real pulse of activity and the ability to take events and use them to propel you to heights never known. Relax and watch your personal star shine and take advantage of the great energy that is offered. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 - Jan. 19) The steady Goat doesn’t like upheaval in their lives. Pluto however thought otherwise as it transits your 1st house. Expect the power of transformation, from your physical body with weight loss or gain, a hair style change but much more. On a certain level people who have known you for years may not even recognize you. These are the powerful and positive effects of Pluto. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 - Feb 18) Finances have been strained for the past months but now with the energy of the 2nd house money will be flowing. Those out of work Aquarians will be offered a position that seems too good to be true. It is legitimate but use caution due to the retrograde Mercury for most of August. Accept all offers but read all contracts at least three times. PISCES (Feb. 19 - March 20) Dear Pisces, you can only deceive yourself for so long before reality sets in. It is your nature to dwell in a dream world. On the one side it is what makes you so childlike and charming. The events of August will wake up your inner soul and put you on notice that your life is about to change. Venus and Jupiter thoughts help make this time a positive one.

restaurant VIEWS Just Sonny’s in Jersey City offers Traditional Italian Cuisine Fine Italian Dining in a Cozy Neighborhood Spot By Sally Deering
F
or the past 29 years, Sonny Fortunato has been serving fine Italian cuisine in his cozy little restaurant, Just Sonny’s on Sterling Avenue in Jersey City. The restaurant features a quaint little dining room that seats about 60 people with a small bar area that could easily fit five people , and it’s so intimate you feel like you’re dining in someone’s home. But don’t let the restaurant’s size fool you. The menu offers a large number of Italian appetizers, soups, salads, pasta, veal, chicken, beef and seafood dishes and the portions are bigger than most Italian eateries. For appetizers, Just Sonny’s offers traditional Italian fare that includes Zuppa Di Clams, Scungilli Salad, Stuffed Mushrooms, Fried Calamari, Broccoli Rabe, and Cold Clams on the Half Shell ($7.95-$10.50.) Soups feature their delicious Pasta e Fagioli, Stacciatelle alla Romano, and Tortellini en Brodo ($4.75-$5.) A complimentary salad is served family style with all entrees and the menu offers special salads like Tomatoes alla Napoletana, Mozzarella and Tomatoes alla Napoletana, and Mozzarella and Roasted Peppers ($4.75-$9.95.) There are so many
choices of Pasta to choose from: Cavatelli with Broccoli Aglio e Olio, Filetto Di Pomodoro, Fettuccini Alfredo, Spaghetti Carbonara, Linguini or Spaghetti with White or Red Clam Sauce, Baked Ziti, and Ravioli ($10.95-$14.95.) Veal dishes feature Veal Piccata, Veal Scaloppine Marsala, Saltimbocca alla Romano, Veal Cutlet Parmigiana, and Veal Pizzaiola ($17.95-$18.95.) Chicken dishes include Chicken Cacciatore, Chicken Scarpariello, Chicken Marsala, Chicken Breast Francese, Chicken Rollatine, and Chicken Breast Parmigiana ($16.95$17.95.) Beef dishes are the New York Steak Prime Aged Beef, Steak Pizzaiola with Mushrooms in Marinara Sauce and Filet Mignon ($23.95-$24.95.) Just Sonny’s also serves a Surf and Turf dish priced at market value. All entrees are served

with potato and vegetable or pasta. Seafood dishes include Shrimp Scampi, Shrimp Francese, Fillet of Sole Francese, Zuppa di Pesce, Shrimp Parmigiana and Shrimp Marinara or Fra Diavolo with Clams ($16.95$25.95.) Broiled Lobster Tails and Lobster Tail Fra Diavolo are sold at market value. For the lunchtime crowd, Just Sonny’s features a Chef Salad, Turkey Club, Hamburger and Cheeseburger Deluxes, Chopped Steak, Steak Sandwich, Veal Parmigiana Sandwich, Eggplant Rollatine; Sausage and Peppers and Fried Shrimp ($6.95-$9.95.) There are specialty cakes and pastries, Tortoni, Tortufo, and Tirmisu ($4.35-$5.50) and specialty coffees including Irish and Mexican, Espresso and the Special House Cappuccino ($2.25-$4.95.) Even though Just Sonny’s is a neighborhood
restaurant with regulars that come in pretty much daily, favorable reviews of the restaurant online draw people from out-of-state. “J. E.” of Hillsborough, New Jersey posted on Yelp. com: “LOVE Just Sonny’s! The food is outstanding here! I usually get the chicken parm with a side of pasta and have yet to be disappointed. They also make a killer house salad for the table. It’s what you’d definitely call “a neighborhood place.” The service is great and they always remember you,
whatever you talked about last time you were there and ask you about how you’ve been. Price wise, they are relatively inexpensive and also offer take-out.” “Edward” of NYC posted this review on Yelp.com: “This is a cozy little place… Servings are rather large… it’s worth a visit when you’re in the area.” For some traditional fine Italian cuisine, give Just Sonny’s a visit. Whether you want to relax in the restaurant’s cozy setting or have your food prepared for Con’t on page 21

Experimenting with iced coffee drinks is one way to put a cool twist on an old favorite.
